Okie doke everybody, welcome to Season 10 Episode 12, the grand finale of Season 10 everybody.

It's hard to believe we survived another season, Spurjo.

Before we jump into talking about Spurjo's shirt.

I mean, it's a little bit early to say that we survived the season

because we still have to get through the next two and a half hours.

You're right.

We're only 11, 12th of the way through.

But as it stands right now, we want to remind you that Episode 12,

the grand finale of High Side, Low Side is typical in this case in so much

as we will be reviewing some of the things we talked about over the course of Season 10.

We talked about Chinese motorcycles, the Honda Goldwing, the Alamantiti

and many more things with our very special guest, Garrett Gerloff.

But before we invite Garrett in here, Spurjo, it's been a while since we recorded an episode.

Over a month.

Yeah, you've been halfway across the country and back to ride adventure bikes.

But the first thing I need to talk about is this shirt that you're wearing.

I know you're famous for your flamboyant Hawaiian shirts,

but even this one is bright.

You can probably hear it.

Even if you're not watching the video, you can probably hear this shirt.

Yeah.

If you hear a very high-pitched noise, almost like some sort of device to scare away rodents,

it's probably Spurgeon's shirt.

And can you explain to everyone?

So it's very flowery.

There are palm trees and bright colors.

Can you read this?

I can read it.

It says Turbo Spurge on it.

And there's some sort of insignia.

What's the...

No, it's a turbo.

It's a turbo.

I see.

I thought it was like a crass.

But it's a turbo.

I saw you last.

I went out and I participated in Get on Adventure Fest.

And on the very first night of Get on Adventure Fest,

I walk in and there is a very excited gentleman named John.

And John rums up to me and he does the Zac Court's Spurgeon Dunbar voice.

He tackles me and he's like,

can I give you a hug?

And I was like, yeah, man, give me a hug.

And he gives me a big bear hug.

And we had the new high-side low-side shirts.

And I was like, hey, do you want a high-side low-side shirt?

And I got him a new high-side low-side shirt.

And he was wearing a really wild, loud shirt.

And I was like, hey, man, I love your shirt.

And he had a little cattle insignia on it.

And it turns out that John presumably kills cows for living or raises cows or farms.

He farms cows.

Perhaps both, right.

Yeah.

And he's like, well, this is my brand of the ranch that I have.

Gotcha.

And I was like, I would like one of those shirts.

And he was like, oh, I'll get you a special one.

And so literally earlier this week, it showed up in the mail.

For those of you that are listening, it is very Hawaiian.

It is very loud.

Extremely.

And it has turbo spurge embroidered on it with a turbo.

And he's like, we'll get you to love turbos yet because Zach's right.

So it is someone that's a fan of the podcast, is a fan of your point of view

and wanted to brand me to be a little bit more on team Zachary.

Well, I suppose I deserve to give him a tip of the cap then

for trying to bring you over to the dark side of turbo motorcycles,

which don't really exist yet.

Well, that's a great story.

And I want to say it's a great shirt, but let me just, I'll stop short of that

and I'll say that it's a very bright shirt.

And I think it suits you because I don't know if he knew that you like

Hawaiian shirts, but it's very, it's a very Spurgeon Dunbar shirt.

It fits perfectly too.

And I told him, I called him right away and I was like,

I'm going to wear this on the finale episode.

And I was telling him that we were going to, you know, talk with Garrett.

And I think the last time that I saw Garrett was in Texas

and I was probably wearing something much more formal.

So when we, when we originally talked with Garrett, he was like,

I got to ask you about your shirt.

I'm like, you'll hear all about it. I'm sure.

Well, on that topic, shall we dive into this,

this conversation about motorcycles with our very special guest?

It is Mr. Garrett Goriloff.

Garrett is for those of you not familiar,

a Moto America super sport champion, a world super bike rider,

a MotoGP race competitor.

He is 30 years old.

He's from Texas.

He's extremely good looking,

which really takes us down a peg or two.

That was mine.

You stole the one thing that I had on my list.

But without further ado, we'll invite Garrett in here.

He's been waiting in the green room listening to us talk about Spurgeon shirt.

Thank you so much for joining us.

Yo, what's up?

I can't butter me up like that.

Well, listen, you know, I'm sure I left some things out, right?

You have, you have some other thing, other qualities.

Anyone that follows you on social media knows what you look like.

They know that we're not low on smoke.

They know I wear helmet most of the time.

That's right.

I like to keep it.

Yeah.

Right, right.

You cover your face.

Sure, sure.

Right on.

Well, as we said, we have,

we have a whole gamut of questions for you.

Did I miss anything in your, if someone,

if someone met you in an elevator and they said, you know,

who are you and what do you do?

And he had 30 seconds to describe it.

You would probably talk about your Moto America resume,

perhaps your world tour bike racing, perhaps your MotoGP race starts

that I mentioned.

But what else would you say?

I don't know.

Did I cover it all?

I don't know if I'd bring any of that up.

I'm just a dude.

I got some Texas pride.

Okay.

A big long horn fan.

I see the long horn.

Yeah, okay.

I need to get you one of these shirts so that you can wear it

down in Texas.

I mean, I'm old peddler.

I don't, which is, yeah.

But it's like somebody that loves dogs,

but you know, they're not in the stage of life where

a dog is kind of where I'm in.

We want to jump in.

We want to jump into a lightning round,

but I just want to remind everybody,

so the way the episode is going to go is we have a couple

of questions from each episode.

So we're going to kind of like walk through the entire

high side, low side season with you and give you a

chance to participate in each of the topics as we go along.

But before we do that, we wanted to jump in with

just quick lightning round of questions for people to

get to know you outside of your racing resume.

Zach, anything before I just jump in to kicking off

the lightning round?

All right.

If you couldn't, if motorcycling was never a thing,

right, you never rode a motorcycle,

what would you be doing for a living instead?

I thought about this a lot lately because I just

turned 30.

So things are a great way to start.

Yeah.

Probably, I've been thinking about being like a pilot,

you know, because you like airline, like airline pilot,

something like that, whether it's commercial or,

you know, private or I'm not sure yet,

but kind of have the same man and machine vibe,

you know, that I like and considering that maybe.

That's a good answer.

Right.

You go fast.

There's a lot of crossover between motorcycle road racers

and being pilots in my experience.

Have you noticed that too?

Yeah, Steve Wrapp, I think.

Yeah, famously a pilot and a racer.

But lots of people have been into flying planes

on the side as racers.

And I think you're right.

It's like a very, it's a controlling.

Have you done it at all?

Have you flown planes or taken any lessons or anything?

So I went on a, what do they call it,

a discovery flight on one of like a,

it was a four seater Cezna or something like that,

single engine, a prop plane.

And it actually wasn't a discovery flight for me.

It was a discovery flight for my,

my buddy's girlfriend.

And he was too scared to get in the plane with her,

but she was scared to get in the plane.

And so he was like, we all went and he's like,

Hey, just go with her cause she doesn't want to go alone.

So I went in the discovery flight.

They let her take off the plane.

And dude, he was like, okay,

pull the stick back, you know,

as we're going up to take off.

And she pulled the thing all the way back.

And we go like, we started going up so steep that we're about to

stall. There's like red lights going off in the dash.

And I'm like, I'm in the back seat.

Like, so anyway,

I'm not looking forward to the,

the instruct the,

the learning part in a small plane.

They move around too much.

They're a little scary, but I'll be fine.

Yeah. Yeah, that's fair.

I got a buddy who's a,

who's a hobbyist pilot and is fairly accomplished.

But every time I ride one of those small planes,

I'm always reminded that like the, yeah,

it's like a different kind of turbulence.

Like you're sliding from side to side in the air.

And it's like, it feels very kind of janky.

It's like, it's like being on a moped behind a semi truck

on the freeway instead of a hard, you know what I'm saying?

Yeah.

It was, it was funny.

I was actually, we had,

we had Peter Egan on the podcast a couple of seasons ago.

And Peter is a world famous motorcycle journalist.

And he actually has a book coming out.

He had reached out to me recently.

He has a book coming out about his exploits in being a pilot.

So, you know,

back to Zach's point and what you guys were talking about,

like there's definitely seems to be the crossover of like,

you know, motorcycles and racing or going fast or flying

or whatever it ends up being.

It seems like there's that crossover.

They need lots of maintenance.

Like the people,

people are good at spinning wrenches on a motorcycle.

You got spin wrenches on the plane.

I think there's a, there's a lot of crossover there.

I'm not going to be touching a plane.

No way.

Fair enough.

Okay.

I'm going to do motorcycles a little bit.

I saw on your website,

there's a little anecdote in there about how you begged your dad

to buy you a motorcycle when you were four years old.

This is,

I don't know the story of the genesis of your,

of your motorcycling career.

So can you,

can you tell us that story and can you tell us like what,

how, how did your motorcycling journey begin?

And,

and was it on racetrack or,

or off-road or what?

Yeah.

Is that the lightning round on one question?

No, no, no.

We're still, we're still lightning round.

No, this is okay.

Okay.

Sorry.

My bad.

Yeah.

So I did.

I, I,

my dad raced motocross grown up.

And he,

he like tried to be a professional from what I understand the story to be.

He tried to,

yeah,

get into professional supercross motocross back in the 80s,

I think.

I'm not wrong with that.

And,

and so I,

I always saw him riding,

you know, we, we'd go to the track with him when I was like two,

three years old.

And I guess it never crossed my mind that there was bikes that were even

small enough for me to ride until I saw like a CRF 50 going around.

And then that's when it,

that's when I was like,

I need a bike, you know?

And so I begged for a year and on my fourth birthday,

my dad got me a PW 50.

And so that was kind of the genesis of my love for motorcycles,

but it's kind of funny because I,

I liked motorcycles,

but I also didn't really care to always ride.

You know, like I had so many things in my life that I love doing

motorcycles just happen to be one of them.

But like I loved,

you know, playing football with my friends.

You know, I loved playing video games.

Like it was just one of the things that sometimes I'd pick it,

but sometimes I wouldn't pick it.

I'd pick something else to do.

So it wasn't like,

you know,

a crazy big passion for a long time.

Did you have a lot of friends in your younger age

that rode motorcycles too?

Like obviously you're,

you got the Texas background.

So a lot of people are out playing football, right?

Did you have friends that were also riding motorcycles?

Not a ton, honestly, from what I remember.

Like no, I was just, I was going to,

you know, elementary school in KD, Texas,

and just had friends that I'd want to just hang out with.

And yeah, I play football and on a field and,

you know, play video games.

And that was more fun to me a lot of times

than being drug out to the track.

And it's 100 degrees with my dad, you know,

as a five, six, seven year old.

Totally.

So I hope this question makes sense,

but I'm curious,

because now you're a professional racer

and I'm curious if,

did you get kind of addicted to motorcycles first

or was there a moment when it was clear

that you were very good at riding a motorcycle

and the success sort of pushed you forward?

Does that make sense?

Like, were you like, did you love it more first

or did your skills show in a way that people were like,

well, you got to keep doing this?

My skills didn't show for a really long time.

So, no, I feel like my skills were all developed.

They weren't, like I had to develop them.

They weren't just there from my perspective.

But no, I mean, I didn't really have a big desire

to be a professional rider.

I didn't really even kind of know that it was a possibility

or like it could be a possibility.

And so motorcycles, to me,

were always just kind of like another thing that I did,

but it wasn't like who I was or it wasn't, you know,

that all kind of changed when I moved

from Katie, Texas to Alabama.

My dad got a job, a promotion there.

And so we had to move.

And so like all of the friends that I had growing up

from when I was like four years old to fifth grade,

which was like 10 years old maybe.

Like all of those friends, I ended up, you know,

I had to move through a different state.

So like I ended up having to start over in middle school,

which was even worse, you know,

because you go from elementary to middle school,

puberty, all that stuff, things get weird.

I had a difficult time making friends, honestly.

So I moved to Alabama.

I was struggling to make friends, which, you know,

that sucked.

And so one of the things that started becoming more

like interesting was motorcycles.

It kind of like, it replaced the part of me that like,

I wanted to make friends.

I wanted to have that same group of people that I did stuff

with like I did in Texas, but because I didn't have it.

And I was struggling.

I just like pivoted to motorcycles.

That was kind of like the,

I kind of filled the void a little bit.

Not trying to get too deep here.

But no, no, no, that's, that's super interesting.

Yeah. So, um, and so then I started just kind of diving

all the way into it.

This is still a motocross, by the way, like I'm still,

so I started diving into motocross being like, you know what,

I'm going to, I want to actually make this,

I want to try to do this.

And I was probably, I was like 12 years old

when, when I started really diving into motocross.

And, you know, I wasn't like, it wasn't bad at it,

but I wasn't amazing at it.

And my, my dad was still riding at this point,

but he was getting pretty beat up riding motocross.

So his, his body was just taking a beating.

His back was, you know, my dad still got back issues from it.

And, and so he was looking for something to do that would be

easier on his body. He thought.

And so lower impact.

The impact. Yeah. Yeah.

The dealership, the car dealership, the BMW dealership

that he was working for sponsored Barbara Motorsports Park.

And so we would get free tickets to go out there

and watch racing that happened,

whether it was car, motorcycle, whatever.

And so we ended up going out there in 2006

to one of the AMA races out there.

I don't know if you guys remember this,

but there was a crash that happened in the last corner

at Barbara Motorsports Park where I think it was,

it was number two on a Kawasaki in 2006.

And forgive me, I don't remember who that is,

but he, he low sided.

And then somebody adjacent to Solvo jumped his bike

in the, in the super sport class.

Like, okay, okay.

Anyway, I remember that because I was there

watching it live, you know, and I was getting,

I mean, it was cool.

I was all amped up on road racing.

I didn't even know what it was.

You know, I had no idea what it was at that point.

My dad, I didn't know this,

but my dad had already planned to buy a bike

that was for sale at the track

and leathers and everything.

So we go out there just thinking we're going to watch

and we come back with a truck full

of everything you need to start road racing.

No way.

For him, for my dad.

Oh, for him, okay.

Just for my dad, just for my dad

and my mom's pissed off, you know,

like didn't know that that was going to happen.

But, you know, it was all good.

It was all good.

And my brother was like, I had 100% want to road race.

He was never super into motocross and stuff.

And so he was like, yeah, I want to road race.

They had metric.

Is he older or younger than you, your brother?

Two years younger than me.

Two years younger.

Yeah.

So they have like metric it bikes,

which was a brand.

I think it's still a brand,

but they have like smaller bikes.

Yeah.

Right.

So there's two strokes or they wore two strokes.

So he gets like a 12 inch metric it's 72 CC two stroke bike.

And I'm like, no, that's dumb.

Like road racing is dumb.

You know, it's not cool.

You don't do any jumps.

You don't, you know,

you're still on the motocross track.

Yeah.

I'm still full motocross.

I'm like, you guys are dumb.

You guys, that's just like stupid.

You just, you just go left and you go right.

And you go left and you go right.

Like that's what's the fun in that, you know.

And, and so like, we had, I'm, if I'm being,

if I'm saying too much,

I'm like talking too long.

Let me know.

No.

I'm on the edge of my seat.

So far we're like,

we're in middle school

and you're not even interested in racing yet.

And we're talking to a professional racer.

So I'm wondering when the tide's going to turn.

I'm keep going.

Yeah.

Okay.

So I'm like,

I'm still on the motocross,

but my, we had,

we went to church in Alabama

and there was a parking,

a big parking lot in the church that we went to.

And it was triple tiered.

I think it was Crosspoint in Trustville, Alabama.

If anybody wants to look it up,

but there's a,

there was a three tiered parking lot

and they were all connected.

So we had like mini corkscrews everywhere.

And my dad would go out there with my brother and they,

and my brother would ride his little metric it around

the parking lot with his gear on and stuff

and try to drag me.

And I finally went out there with him and was like,

all right, I'll, you know,

let me ride the bike.

I'll check it out.

I had motocross gear on with knee pads.

So like, I didn't even have leathers,

nothing like that.

But I rode it around and I was like, okay,

it's actually,

it's kind of fun.

You know, like, all right,

I kind of get it.

And,

and so it took a while,

but then I was like, all right,

you know what,

I kind of do want to try this road racing thing.

Like it is pretty fun.

You guys are having a good time.

Like, all right,

give me a bike.

And so I,

yeah, I just,

I started riding in that parking lot more.

I ended up high siding in that parking lot.

Hit a, like,

I was still motocrossing.

So I was using too much rear brake.

And so I entered one of the corners like full rear brake

and just lost the rear and I did myself

destroying my brother's bike.

But anyway, I started,

but after I crashed and I was fine,

I was like, okay, well,

not as scary to crash anymore,

which helped a lot mentally.

Had you,

had you had any big crashes in,

on the motocross side of things at that point or like,

when you high side,

so like the high side on a,

on the street asphalt type thing was like your first big

experience like that.

That was my first like big, like,

you know,

I was in, I was in the air.

Like,

yeah.

And that's still just like knee pads and motocross gear.

I had leathers at that point.

So that was luckily, otherwise,

for sure.

Yeah.

But,

but yeah, then I,

I honestly don't remember when I was like,

all right,

road racing,

like I don't remember when exactly I picked it,

but it just kind of started being more fun to me.

And I was like,

you know what,

I just kind of want a road race.

And so I got a 17 inch wheel metric,

it's 76 CC bike.

And we started racing.

We're,

we're a southeast races.

Just doing like mini races and stuff like that.

And,

you know,

I wasn't too special.

It took me,

I don't know,

over six months to get a podium.

I think in a,

in a class of like eight riders.

Did your,

did your brother follow you into racing or did your

brother take a different path?

So my brother,

like he was the one that drug me in the road racing,

like I said,

and we,

we like race side by side,

although sometimes in different classes,

because I stepped up to a 125 earlier than he did.

So we kind of weren't always in the same class,

but he,

he,

he decided that it kind of wasn't for him.

You know,

I guess like,

obviously we were spending a lot of money on racing.

And also at this point,

we're getting into like,

oh eight great,

or like the recession that,

you know,

my dad ended up losing his job,

you know,

like ended up being pretty stressful to try to keep racing,

but there was actually like after,

after I got into a 125,

not the first year I was on a 125,

but the second year I was on a 125,

there was kind of like,

Hey, you know what,

maybe this,

we could like,

maybe I could actually make it to be in a professional.

And so like,

so we try to keep pushing through my dad not having a job

for,

you know,

a little bit of time and not,

you know,

making a ton of money to where we could like,

comfortably pay for everything.

Like I know my parents were on credit cards and stuff,

like nothing,

nothing good,

but yeah.

And so this is a to,

to this,

when you say 125,

this is like a RS 125 Honda

or,

or some sort of like customer GP 125.

Yeah.

RS 125,

RS 125.

We had a couple.

So yeah.

So 2007,

I was on minis.

So I was racing minis.

And then 2008 was my first year

was my first year on a RS 125 and did most of that year

with the 125,

but also there was a more walkie 250.

I don't know if you guys remember those,

but yeah,

it was a more walkie.

It was supposed to be like a comparable bike, right?

It's a two,

two 54 stroke as opposed to 125 two stroke.

And it was same size,

like little GP bike kind of thing.

Yeah.

And actually that class,

the more walkie class was something that came to us GP,

are you,

right?

Which was like this,

you know,

how to explain it.

I raced USGPR,

so I'm familiar.

But yeah,

it was basically,

it was supposed to be sort of like elite club racing

in a Grand Prix style.

So it was 125s

and two 52 stroke GP bikes

and that kind of thing, right?

Yeah, exactly.

And it was,

it was like the national series.

It was like where PJ Jacobson was like,

kind of got his momentum

and his start from there and stuff.

Yeah.

Josh,

you had credibility.

Yeah.

And so it was,

so I did 125s

and the more walkie,

but the more walkie class was cool

because there was a big prize money,

you know,

there was like two grand to win

and for,

you know,

just being a 12 year old kid

or a 13 year old kid

and my parents paying for everything.

I mean,

it was like,

that was going to keep us racing,

you know?

Yeah.

And so I didn't do,

I didn't do much in that class the first year,

but the second class,

we actually like raked in a decent amount of

more walkie prize money,

which kept us going.

And so yeah,

2009,

2009 is like the first time I actually showed

that I could be a professional racer

potentially.

Professional racer.

Like I started winning USGPRU races.

I started,

I won a championship in USGPRU,

you know,

and so like that was,

that was all good.

I think,

I think it was the more walkie class

I won that year.

And then 2010,

I was 14 and I stepped up to 600s.

And so like I was,

I was on the Suzuki GSXR 600

for 2010,

racing against Benny Solis,

who was on the factory Yamaha

team as a 15 year old,

because he was supposed to be his warm-up

for going professional when he turned 16.

So there was the big Graves truck

that was there,

the big semi truck and stuff at the amateur races.

And this is weird.

This is weird southeast still.

This is weird nationals now.

Sorry.

I'm skipping over all kinds of stuff.

No, no, no, it's okay.

And we're going to,

we're going to pivot in different direction here anyway,

but I think this is great context for like,

you know,

who you are and how you started.

And to me,

like,

what's really interesting is that it sounds like,

if I'm doing my math correctly,

by like 12 years old,

you're like,

Oh, I might want to try racing a motorcycle on the street

and get away from motocross.

And then by 14 years old,

you're racing a 600cc in nationals.

Is that about like a two year timeline?

And already you're doing that.

Wow.

No, it was a two year timeline.

Yeah.

I mean, it was,

yeah,

when I was 12,

I started getting into wanting to race something,

like motocross first and then transition.

Okay.

Well,

I'm going to ask,

I'm going to ask one more lightning round questions,

Spurge,

if it pleases the court and then we'll pivot out and we'll move on.

But that was the really genuinely interesting.

I'm,

I'm always so curious when people are,

you know,

you have a job in motorcycling,

obviously has a professional racer,

but anytime people get interested in bikes,

I'm always just so curious how they,

and sometimes it's very obvious.

It's like,

Oh, my,

you know,

my dad wrote and he bought me a minibike and then I was into it

or something like that.

But even,

you know,

Spurge and I are lifelong motorcyclists,

and I'm curious how we got into it.

And I'm,

it's so interesting to hear you were just sort of like a,

a motocross kid who just didn't have any interest in doing that

until randomly you kind of got like sucked into it.

And,

and here you are,

like traveling the world and getting paid to race against the,

the race with and be one of the best riders in the world.

It's,

it's fascinating.

And my,

my takeaway was that you both race in the same class and Garrett's doing what he's doing.

And you're stuck here with me,

you know,

interviewing guys like Garrett.

I was actually just thinking that I raced in USGPRU in 2000,

2005 or six or something like that.

So I was, I was, I was ahead of the game.

I was there before you obviously,

because I'm whatever,

10 years,

12 years older than you are.

And,

and here I am riding a desk for a living instead of,

riding super bikes for a living.

So just,

just for all you kids,

for all you kids listening,

it doesn't always turn out as glamorous.

You might end up being like Zach.

Yeah,

you could end up a loser at a desk like that.

I know that racers are superstitious people sometimes.

I'm curious,

do you have any,

superstitions that have grown into your racing?

Do you,

do you,

you know,

always use the,

the same helmet through a whole race weekend or,

put your right glove on first every time,

anything like that,

that you've developed as a,

as a professional racer.

Yeah.

I've always tried to fight it.

I've always tried to be like that.

I just don't want it to be like something that ever affects me,

I would con,

like I still constantly do stuff that,

that counteracts any superstition that I might have building,

most of the time it has proved that it's not there.

I think what we're excited with Garrett is that there's like,

one of the things that Zach and I are talking about is that like,

you are obviously a professional racer,

but you really,

in my short time getting to talk to you,

and I know you and Zach probably know what you're a little bit better,

you really appreciate motorcycling, right?

you like motorcycles in general.

You're talking about riding mopeds.

so in,

in episode one of this season,

it was titled,

exciting new motorcycle releases for 2025.

and our kickoff question here is,

what motorcycles are you most excited about that have been

released in the last 12 to 18 months?

If you had to go out and buy an off the rack motorcycle,

what's the most exciting thing for you right now?

Oh,

that's a tough one.

Obviously I have kind of a bias because I'm contracted and I work,

I work for kind of technically Kawasaki.

So,

I'll start with that.

I'll start there.

The,

the versus 1100 I really like.

I mean,

it's like,

I like that bike a lot.

It's sick.

I like touring bikes.

This,

yeah, this is like,

this is a quick sidebar I want to point out.

There's some,

some,

uh,

Instagram message interactions where you have revealed to me

basically that like,

you kind of like sport touring bikes.

Like you're like interested in like riding on the road.

You're like,

you're not,

you're not addicted to like,

you don't want to sport bike on the road.

You're,

you like want something that makes sense.

And so I think that's a pretty fun kind of,

uh,

fact about your,

your,

your dispositions about motorcycles.

So have you ridden a versus 1100?

Or are you just sort of like that kind of bike?

I have not,

but I know I have that kind of bike.

I have,

I have like a ton of different bikes over the years.

And they're not always related to like who I'm riding for.

But,

like last,

last year I bought a,

uh,

Tracer nine,

Yamaha Tracer.

So I love that thing.

The thing is sweet.

Uh, before that I had like a KTM 890 adventure.

That thing was sweet.

I was a big fan of that.

Not,

not that bike.

Spurge is an 890 adventure owner.

So he,

Zach says that it's an ugly bike.

I think that the 890 looks nice.

I,

I like it.

It's kind of weird.

Like,

I put a,

like an SC project exhaust on it and it was popping and banging.

And then before,

and then before that I had a BMW C 400 X scooter.

Right.

So I do,

I'm not just saying that I,

I like mopeds.

I like stuff.

So you're walking the walk.

Yeah.

I had a Zuma before that.

the Zuma 125,

that's what got me into being a street rider also,

not just like that.

Where were you riding?

Were you riding when you lived in Europe?

No,

I was around here in Texas.

Right in Texas?

Where every road is 55 miles an hour and I'm barely keeping up,

you know.

So that kind of got me into like,

oh, you know,

this is cool.

Get a hundred miles per gallon,

go wherever I want,

park wherever I want.

You know,

that got me into street riding specific.

Yeah.

I was never in street ride until that.

So,

I'll try,

I'll try to six the question.

didn't you have a Zuma too?

I thought you had a Zuma,

I had an Aprilia scooter that I sold.

that's kind of why I had it when I was like a club racer.

It was like my pit bike.

what bikes you've got on your own in Kawasaki.

What I would say is, if anyone from Kawasaki is listening,

get this Man of Versus 1100 for crying out loud.

Just as a street bike to ride around, like.

Yeah, not to ride around, I'm gonna, like,

Our episode two, we interviewed a guy named Matt Oxley,

who's a MotoGP journalist,

and an Isle of Man, a former racer

and Isle of Man sort of journalist.

And we talked to him all about the history

of the Isle of Man TT and that kind of thing.

And being that you're a road racer,

I think I feel like I know what your vibe

will be around the Isle of Man.

But I'm curious, have you been to Isle of Man?

Would you be interested in going?

Like, do you have any curiosity about the course

or even racing there?

Or is it just like a no-go for you?

Yeah, I wanna go and watch, for sure.

Well, I'm kind of conflicted,

because I wanna go and watch,

but I definitely don't wanna see anything

that I'm gonna regret seeing,

if you know what I mean.

That's fair, yeah.

I'm good friends with Taryn McKenzie and Brad Ray,

who raced on World Superbike.

Taryn still races there,

but Brad's now leading the championship in BSB.

But they've gone to the Isle of Man quite a few times,

and they were showing me all the videos on their phone,

of them just ripping past right there,

next to the wall and stuff.

It's too sketchy for me to wanna try to do the race,

but I think it'd be fun to go out to the Isle of Man

and rent a bike and go ride the track.

Slowly and just check it out and stuff.

I think that would be cool.

But no, I mean, I think those guys are nuts.

I think even when we talked to Matt,

Zach, correct me if I'm wrong,

but didn't Matt get started with vintage bikes,

or wasn't it like something,

because it was a much smaller displacement, wasn't it?

Yeah, well, yeah, he did.

I think it was 250 production class in the 80s,

so he was riding like a,

I don't wanna downplay it too much,

but I feel like it was like a 40 horsepower,

50 horsepower, two-stroke street bike

that had got turned into a race bike.

And not to suggest that what he did wasn't badass,

because he technically won a race at Isle of Man,

which is pretty dope.

But yeah, he was a smaller,

he wasn't racing super bikes.

He wasn't even racing like super twins,

which is like the,

that's like a mid-sized twins cup kind of class,

I think it's like 650 twins or something like that.

But I don't even,

he was his classes,

the class he raced in was smaller.

And he, I think he even admitted that it was like,

the only way he felt like he could rationalize it

because the bikes weren't as fast.

So, any displacement is too much displacement for me.

I'm with Garrett as far as like,

it's one thing to go and observe,

it's another thing to compete.

I will say, Garrett,

given your off-road background,

I know when Zach was there,

we talked about this a little bit on the episode,

he and Ari filmed an episode

where they actually just rode dirt bikes

on the inside of the course

to like look at it in different ways.

So you actually might be,

that might be right up your alley

and just like riding dirt bikes

across the inside of the course.

I can actually,

I can hook you up with the guy that we,

that we rented bikes from too,

if you're interested.

He's like, he's a homegrown dude.

He's from Isle of Man

and he has like a few dirt bikes in his garage

and you can like rent

and he like showed us around.

It was so cool.

Like he basically,

we went inside the course and you're like,

it's a huge loop that's 37 miles around or whatever.

And all the sort of like pastures and trails

and private land and stuff that's in the middle,

you can, some of it,

you can ride dirt bikes across

and you can get to like certain points in the track

and like walk down through the forest

and watch where there's no one else is around.

It's really, really cool.

And actually because you're like a four motor cross guy,

you know, you're a dirt bike guy

and you're obviously competent on a bike

so you'd be able to do it.

But that'd be a cool thing for you to do.

Heck yeah. All right.

Yeah, send me that.

All right, cool.

I'm gonna hook you up with David

and you'll have the best vacation ever.

Well, that's fair.

I think it's very common for, you know,

actual road users to look at Isle of Man

and be like, I can't imagine doing that.

And that's kind of, even though I've not raced

even close to at your level,

but even just being a club racer

and looking at Isle of Man,

I'm sort of like, I wouldn't even want to try

to go around as fast as I can go,

which wouldn't be like world championship pace or anything,

but it would still be way too scary and sketchy to try.

Yeah, I mean, no, I got massive respect for those guys.

And I know Davey Todd,

who won last year or was it last year,

this year on the BMW and like I talked to him

and he's just like a normal dude.

I met him at Brands Hatch at a BSB race.

Just normal dude, he was out there racing

and you just don't realize that he's got a switch

that, you know, he can flip and yeah, it's crazy.

Yeah, it's wild.

Big respect.

I want to jump ahead, Zach.

So let's, I think we're going to jump to episode four

if that's okay with you.

Yes.

So on episode four, we talked about,

you know, does riding different motorcycles

make you a better rider?

And, you know, I think, you know, Garrett,

even just in the short time we've been talking,

you've ridden a variety of different motorcycles

and different types of motorcycles.

You know, how do you cross train as a racer

and what does that bring to you

and your specific riding style?

For sure.

I mean, I'd still ride a lot of motocross, you know,

I got a KX250 that I try to ride as much as I can.

And yeah, I feel like, yeah, just being on two wheels

in general, I feel like you're learning something always.

I used to train on trials bikes and, you know,

work on balance and slow speed maneuver,

clutch control, stuff like that.

I mean, you're not really doing a whole lot

of clutch control on the bikes that I race,

but I feel like just being on two wheels,

you're always just kind of figuring something out

that maybe you wouldn't have figured out

if you're just doing the same thing all the time.

On a road race bike.

So I've ridden Ovales and those things are super twitchy

and like, you know, it gives you a different perspective.

Motocross gives you a different perspective,

you know, having like a lot less grip

and having to use, like staying in ruts

and stuff like that, you learn something new.

Even, I just, I gotta bring up a moped again,

the Zuma, when I had a Zuma, man.

Like now I have a rear brake on my clutch hand

on the super bike, you know.

So like, since I went to world super bike,

I've always had a rear brake on my left handlebar

that I use with my index finger, my left index finger.

And so, but I feel like I'm pretty good at using it

because I used to rip the Zuma around the paddock

and just, you know, rip skids and stuff, you know.

So I was like.

And on a Zuma, the left lever is not a clutch

because it's a CVT scooter, it's the rear brake.

Yeah, that's interesting.

So did you, I know that this is gonna be

like a little bit of a nerdy road racing deep dive.

So it's spurred, pardon me.

But historically, the rear brake on the handlebar,

which we don't need to go into the whole history

of how it happened as far as I understand it,

but it was often a thumb brake.

And is there a reason you chose the finger?

Was it just sort of like what you felt more comfortable with

or have you tried a thumb brake on that side

and you didn't like it or?

Yeah, I've tried a thumb brake, but I can't get the,

I just don't like the way it feels.

It doesn't feel natural to me.

And I also feel like leverage-wise, it feels weird.

And for me, it's easier just to,

and I just feel like I know where I met more

with using my finger.

It just feels more natural, so I stuck with that.

Do you use it on corner entry, I assume?

And do you also use it on the throttle?

Like do you use it for like mitigating slides

or like to catch slides or mitigate wheel spin at all?

Or is it all corner entry that use the rear brake?

Yeah, all the time.

I'm always just using it.

So to fight wheelie, to try to keep the front wheel down,

I use it, especially coming out of like right-hand corners.

Cause I got like, I don't have a weird body position,

but I just, I'm not able to use my rear brake

in right corners like I want to.

Like Mark Marquez is super good about using his foot

going into right-hand corners.

You can see him modulate and stuff,

but I just don't feel like I have that same kind of,

how I put my body weight on the bike,

I just can't do that.

So corner entry for sure.

But then also like on the exit,

I don't have my foot close to the rear brake.

So I use the, the finger brake too

to kind of fight wheelie and stuff.

So, yeah.

You know, you're mentioning, you know,

two wheels as a training piece.

And you know, one of the things that I talked about

during episode four was, you know,

my wife and I moved this year

and I'm not close to the off-road riding that I like.

And I ended up buying a mountain bike.

And it's my first time as an adult buying a bicycle.

And I've really enjoyed it.

It's given, like I'm having a lot of fun

riding a bicycle around the first big boy bike.

We're all very proud of you.

Yeah. But my point is I know that you train

physically quite a bit Garrett.

I know that you do some road biking.

What is your training mentality when it comes to,

whether it's hopping on a bicycle

or your workout aesthetic

and how does that relate to, you know,

your physical endurance when it comes to motorcycling?

I mean, yeah, it's at the,

like once you get past a certain level,

I mean, our races are like 35 minutes long.

And like the track we were just at in Hungary,

I mean, it's slow and technical,

but you have so many transitions that you got to do

where you got to pull the bike from side to side.

And, you know, it was like physically tough a lot.

So I try to like focus on all the training that I do.

I like to do like higher intensity stuff,

whether it's like sprint intervals running

or, you know, intervals on a bicycle

or just like hit training in the gym.

I like to do like that kind of stuff and focus on that

and keep it under an hour.

So a lot of these, like a lot of guys that train,

they'll try to jump on a bicycle

and they'll ride for four hours.

And I'm not saying you shouldn't do that

or you can't do that, but for me, it's like,

my races are always less than an hour.

I'm trying to be as good as I can in that range.

And so that's what I, that's what I kind of stick to.

But yeah, the high intensity stuff is not easy,

but it's what I feel like has given me the best,

like the best condition for me to be like

the most mentally clear when I ride, you know?

And so I just kind of stick to that stuff.

That makes sense.

Well, you heard it here first, everybody,

the best way to become a World Speed Bike Racer

is to train on a Zoom of 125.

Because I'm just saying, I'm just,

I'm trying to tie it all together.

No, no, you're tying it together, man.

You're talking my language.

I love it.

All right, so I'm gonna ask you a question

based on episode five of our season this year,

which was the best way to rent a motorcycle

or rent one out.

I feel like I can assume that you're,

you're not like about to start a motorcycle rental company

or anything like that,

because you have your hands full with other things.

But I'm curious, if you were going to fly anywhere

in the world and rent a bike and take a ride,

and we said like, you know, gun to your head,

you're leaving tomorrow morning, where are you going?

Do you have any like,

any places that you've always been eyeballing

or curious about?

Sardania, Italy, Sardinia looks unreal.

And there's like apparently a big rental market

out there for bikes anyway,

but it's supposed to be some of the best riding in the world.

And I'm actually going next week.

and you get to kind of like, you know,

explore these little windmills on the top of the island.

Well, I mean, was it good?

Like, was a good ride out there?

Riding is cool. Yeah. Super ride.

So my answer is good or my answer is not good?

Oh, your answer is good, man.

No, I think, yeah, especially cause like,

it's one of those places where like very few people

will get to ride a motorcycle, you know?

So I think it's, if you have that experience,

I think that's really cool.

Yeah, it's a good way to put it.

But you know, don't, don't snub the team owner

with the yacht either.

Cause I imagine being on the yacht would be kind of cool.

So have you, have you ever rented a motorcycle before?

Have you ever done anything like that before?

Where you just showed up somewhere and said,

you know what, I have a few days to kill.

I'm just going to run a bike and are,

are you just have so many free motorcycles?

You don't have to worry about that.

No, I've rented, I really hate how much this is coming up,

but I've rented scooters everywhere.

Cause you can rent, you can rent them so cheap

and just get rid of them. Yeah, exactly.

I, and people, I'm so glad you're saying this, man,

because this is really validating for me

because I have people like,

because I'm not as cool as you are,

but I have a job where I get to ride motorcycles

around all the time and, and people, you know,

assume that I want like the biggest, baddest, fastest thing.

And like I was stuck.

I hadn't been stuck.

I was whatever, I had a layover or like I was sort of stuck.

I guess I was in Southern France.

I was in Nice for like 18 hours.

I didn't have anything to do.

And I was like, I just went down to a scooter shop

and I rented a scooter and I rode along the coast

and like got a soda and a sandwich

and then I rode back and I just thought it was so cool.

And people were like, oh, I can't believe

you'd ride a scooter, like a little 125, you know,

podunk thing when you like your job is to like ride fast bikes

or like test expensive fancy things.

And I'm like, I don't want, that's not why I'm in it.

I'm in it because I like riding on two wheels.

So it's super validating to hear you say that like,

you know, you spend time at 200 miles an hour

and you're just like, yeah, man,

I just want to get on a scooter.

And you're a hundred percent right

that like it's affordable.

And like so many people don't realize

that like if you're on vacation somewhere,

like it's such a fun way

to just get around and explore a city, you know?

Especially in Europe and stuff.

I mean, like it's the way to go.

There's no parking there.

So you just park the thing anywhere.

Gas is hella expensive.

So you just don't pay for gas.

Like it's so nice.

The year that Zach and I met you in Austin,

that whole trip, aside from like taking a rental car

down to the track and back,

we would just rent those little bird scooters

around town because like Austin is littered

with those bird scooters.

And Zach and I are like just ripping around Austin

at night, which and like there's definitely people.

There's definitely people that rent those bird scooters

where Zach and I are like, you should not be on that.

Like you're gonna have, you're gonna eat shit.

Have you, have you ridden,

have you ridden one of those electric thingamajigs

that we're talking about?

Like that's just sort of stand up

like lime scooter versus scooter.

Is it, as a professional motorcycle racer,

are they not, they handle bad, right?

They're sketchy.

I'm trying to like take a hand off

to like adjust to something and get into like a tank.

No, I don't recommend that scooter, scooter,

like real scooter.

Scooter all the way, right.

Like a Zoomer scooter.

So I think I interrupted you, whatever,

three minutes ago at this point.

You were gonna tell a story

about how you rented a scooter somewhere.

So was there a particularly good,

scooter rental experience that you had?

Or you were just talking in general.

I was just gonna say that like,

people do not understand that on the street,

you do not need more than like 40 horsepower.

And so it's like, my favorite bikes on earth

are 500 cc's and less for the street,

like to ride around the street.

Just because you can, you can ride the pig of them

and you're not gonna get, you know, arrested.

And I just, I wish more people would understand that, you know?

I mean, it does suck.

I wish that more brands,

and I've like pitched this to Kawasaki,

I wish that more brands would put like more tech

into their smaller bikes, you know,

because people still want cruise control.

People still want heated seats and stuff

on like smaller bikes,

but they, they're only gonna get them

on the higher end bikes and stuff.

But yeah, anyway, the small bikes are so fun.

Hot take.

Hot take, I love this.

Cruise control, heated grips, heated whatever on 500 cc bikes.

I love this.

I have a, I have a-

That's why, sorry, that's why I like the versus 1100

more than the versus 650

because the 650 doesn't come with cruise control

and stuff like that.

And I think that's a big miss in my opinion.

I have a brand new Honda trans out in the garage right now

that I just got from our editor, Lance Oliver.

And, you know, he just wrapped up like a couple

of like 600 mile days and he's like,

yeah, it doesn't have cruise control.

I'm like, that's insane.

It has a quick shifter.

It's a 750 cc touring adventure bike.

Right, it has a quick shifter, but not cruise control.

And it's just like, it's just, it's such a miss to me.

Such a miss.

I think any bike with ride by wire throttle

has to have cruise control, some kind of cruise control.

Even just the set button.

It doesn't have to be adjustable, just a set button.

Like, why do you not have it?

Perhaps you're familiar to some extent

with her career and what she's up to.

I'm curious if you have any other sort of musings

on her, on her career, on her riding, her style,

her successes, whatever.

But I'm gonna start with a real direct question here for you.

Will a woman win a world superbike race in your lifetime?

Oh, I feel like this could be a very controversial question.

I'm not trying to set you up for failure

to say something awkward.

It's like, it hasn't really,

there have been very, very few glimmers of hope here.

And I feel like in the female motorcycling world,

especially in the competition side,

and I feel like Kayli is one of those glimmers of hope.

And I'm curious if you've spent a lot of time

traveling the world and on the world superbike calendar,

I know there's a women's championship that's happening now.

And I'm just kind of curious what your take is.

And I don't think you can say the wrong thing here.

Like there's just an open opinion.

I mean, if anybody on the world superbike grid

has a shot at winning.

So yes, I mean, yes to your question.

Like if you're on the grid,

you do have a statistical chance of winning

and maybe that's even higher in different conditions

and stuff like that.

But it'd definitely be difficult.

I think it's, they have a disadvantage.

Females have a disadvantage when it comes to like

bone density, muscle mass, like stuff like that.

If you don't have any kind of like hormonal help, I guess.

So that makes it difficult.

It's not impossible, but you got more things

to overcome, which I think is awesome

that Kayla's even out there trying to show

that she's overcoming those things.

You know what I mean?

So it's like, and I think, I mean, we had Anna Karosco

who won a world championship in the 300 super sport class

in my championship, you know,

and that was something that was monumental and epic.

I mean, she beat 40 guys or something like that

for that whole year.

So yeah, there's unbelievable talent out there,

male and female.

And I think they definitely need to have the ability

to show what they got, you know?

And I think the younger, the younger anybody starts

the better chance they're gonna have

to hone their skills and stuff.

And so it's cool that she's only 17, is that right?

Yeah, yeah, someone got, yeah, exactly.

And, you know, she's already been on the podium,

you know, in Moto America.

I think if not, if not once, more than once.

And so, I mean, she's definitely got,

she does have a rad style.

She's got like a cool, you know,

like elbow down style and stuff,

which is not an easy style to hone, you know?

So I think she's got a lot going for her 100%.

And I'm not trying to say, like I said,

I'm not trying to say anything bad,

but I mean, I think there is like a reality

when it comes to women being like smaller stature

and stuff like that.

But then you got, you have guys like Danny Pedroza,

who was like five two, you know?

And 125 pounds and he got it done.

So yeah, it's gonna be tougher,

but yeah, not impossible, no.

Yeah, I think that's totally fair take.

And we asked her the same question

and she had some of the similar answers, you know?

Like that there's like both physically and culturally

there are things to overcome, you know?

Like it's just sort of like statistically a little bit

harder, but.

Yeah, yeah.

But even cooler when you do it.

Exactly, right.

I was gonna say it seems like you share her outlook,

which is that like, that doesn't mean it can't be done.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

No, it's underdog, it's like an underdog story.

And those are the best stories.

And I was, but I just want everybody to know,

I don't want to embarrass myself in front of Garrett.

I'm like, if I didn't go to Sardinia

to ride a motorcycle, he's going to be looking

for windmills and he's not going to find them.

Exactly.

I'm embarrassing.

Well, while you're on Google Maps, Spurge,

I'm going to ask Garrett a couple of questions

about World Speed Bike Racing,

because I just can't help myself, you know how I get.

I think this ties in like, we asked Kayla in episode six

a bunch of questions about racing.

So now we're going to pivot to some of the questions

for Garrett that I know you're dying to ask him.

So you raced for,

you raced S1000RRBMW for two seasons, is that right?

Three, two?

The M1000RRR, yeah, yeah.

The M1000RRR, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me.

I'm stuck in 2016.

And then you transitioned to the Kawasaki team

riding the ZX-10, correct?

Yes.

And the ZX-10 historically has had a lot of success

in the World Speed Bike Championship with Tom Sykes

and with Johnny Ray famously.

But I know there's like so much nuance to racing

and like rules and things change

and there are like little tweaks

and people said that, you know,

the Yamaha would never win in World Speed Bike

because of XYZ reason and then it did.

And I'm just curious, your transition from a BMW

to a Kawasaki is going to be much different

than anyone's transition from that bike

from a BMW to a Kawasaki that they buy at a dealership

because you're working on a completely different level.

But how do the bikes compare

and what are some of the things

that you've liked about moving to the Kawasaki

and maybe some things you struggled with?

Yeah, good question.

I mean, I actually get asked this a lot.

So I got a couple of them.

I'm sure you do.

Yeah, I'm sorry to stand in line

and ask this like dorky racing question of like...

No, no, no.

But how many people have asked you about Zuma Scooters?

I mean, that's really...

That's what hurts me the most.

No, I mean, it was nice having two years

to get used to the BMW.

And it was a difficult bike

to kind of understand in the beginning

because it had so much power, you know?

But it had really good electronics too

that kind of almost made it difficult

to understand what I was doing with my inputs

because the electronics kind of masked it.

And so I ended up getting to a lot better place

with that bike, understanding it more

and was able to use its strengths better

and that was all good.

I'm kind of in a similar place right now

with the Kawasaki where I'm trying

to understand its strengths

so that I can make the most out of the package

that I got and the strengths of the bike

are it's so good at like stop and go style riding.

So it's not something that I've tried.

I'm more of a corner speed guy to begin with

just especially with my pass with 125s and stuff.

Yeah, yeah, with small bikes, yeah, yeah.

So I've always liked having kind of more corner speed

but I've struggled with the Kawasaki

to ride in that way just because it's not,

that's just not how it wants to be ridden.

So like if I have more corner speed at full lean angle

and I'm trying to like pick up the gas,

it just doesn't have like the edge grip right there

that I would like it to have.

But then if I like changed my riding style

and I break a little bit later,

run it a bit more in on the front,

stop the bike more and then touch the gas

and pick the bike up at the same time,

it's got unbelievable drive grip.

So it's like, it's like just trying to figure out

what the strengths are and using that to my advantage

instead of trying to ride it

how like I would want to ride it.

But even though there's things that we can do

that push in that direction

of something that like I would like to ride more,

it's just like, hey, we know this works as it is

because of, yeah, all the success that Johnny had

and Tom and stuff like that,

even though that was like a while ago.

I mean, it's still last year with Alex Lowe's,

I mean, he was on the podium almost every weekend.

So there's merit to what they're telling me.

I'm just still trying to figure it out

because it's not like natural to me.

Right.

So I'm gonna, I just wanna ask,

I'm sorry, I just wanna ask you a question

because for you guys are racers

and I wanna play the role of our audience

that might not be racers.

So when you say stop and go riding,

is it just more of like all throttle, harder break

and then on the throttle a little bit sooner?

Like when you say stop and go racing

as a different style and varying from you,

can you just help our audience

and laymans like myself understand that a little bit more?

Yeah.

So the way stop and go style is if you look at a corner,

and it's like 180 degrees like that,

this would be like more of like a roll, roll speed style.

It's just kind of like following the radius,

even though you're, you know, you have,

you still have a race line,

but you follow the radius a bit more

and try to like maximize your corner speed.

Stop and go is to like kind of triangulate it more

and maybe you run a bit more wide mid corner,

but, and you're going a little bit more slow

at the apex of the corner,

but then you're kind of like on a more direct line

for the exit, which is where you can use less lean angle,

more meat of the tire

and hopefully have less electronics intervening

in my situation.

And so it's, yeah, it's kind of,

but what I've had a difficulty doing

is that obviously not every corner is 180 degrees

and not every corner is like,

can be triangulated like that

and be able to stop and go corner.

So I've tried to kind of just figure out

what I need to do better in that, in those corners.

And I'm still kind of struggling,

but I'm getting better.

Right on.

I appreciate the explanation.

You are signed on to race on that team next year.

Is that accurate?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

So I'll be back next year.

And do you think that you have,

do you feel like you've made strides this year

that will help for next year?

Like for like specific tracks

or even just sort of like wrapping your head

around how the bike works, that kind of thing.

You mentioned that you appreciated having two years

to get used to the BMW

and it seems like you'll be in the same situation here.

Yeah, yeah, I'm really thankful.

I mean, it wasn't the best start to the year

as probably, yeah, it was a really difficult start for me.

And so I'm really thankful that they have faith in me

to keep me on for another year,

even when maybe they didn't need to.

So, yeah, big thanks to them for that.

But we have made like a lot of progress

from the beginning to the middle of the year

with not just results,

but you know, lap times, consistency, all of that.

And it's a lot of it has been me.

They've resisted changing a lot.

And so they want me to really understand the bike

and get to know the bike and ride it

as it is set up currently,

which is kind of the first time

that I've been in that situation.

The last few teams that I've ridden for,

I've had the same crew chief,

Les Pearson, who is an awesome guy,

but we kind of attack it together as like,

hey, let's change the bike into what we want it to be.

And we've had support from Yamaha and BMW when we did that.

But I'm with a different crew chief now,

just because it just didn't work out

that I could bring Les with me, even though I wanted to.

And so I'm with a different crew chief, different team,

still a lot of Japanese input,

and they want me to just understand the bike as it is.

So it's the first time that I've had to wrap my head

around that and try to like adjust me.

And so the biggest thing stride that we've made

is me understanding the bike more.

But I'm going to, I leave tomorrow actually

to go to Aragon for a two-day test.

And we have some different parts to try

when it comes to like chassis and stuff like that

to maybe see if there's a way that we could like,

combine the two styles.

Because in my opinion, everything has gone way more

in a corner speed direction

and not like a stop and go style

versus how world superbike used to be.

Gotcha.

Especially with like Bullega on the Ducati

and Toprack and what he's doing on the BMW.

It seems like it's all going that direction.

So it seems like the Kawasaki's past successes

perhaps built the machine into something

that isn't as sharp a tool for the championship

as it stands right now.

And you're going to hopefully adjust that.

Yeah, or I just can't ride it

the way that I should ride it.

So yeah, it could be one of those two things

but I hope it's neither.

And that, you know, we're just kind of

just getting used to each other.

Yeah, yeah, fair enough, fair enough, man.

Well, I will, I will, I'll stop asking you

your racing questions

that everyone's already asked you a hundred thousand times

but I am curious.

And obviously we're all rooting for you

and hoping that you can make friends with that ZX10

as soon as possible.

And I know you've had some good results so far

but you've also had some bad luck.

So hopefully it'll turn for you a little bit.

I want to throw out one racing question

just before we move on to the next episode question here.

There's just not a lot of American racers

on the world stage.

Like what does it mean for you

to be a motorcycle racer from America?

And like, how does that play into, you know

maybe some of the mental stuff going on for you

when you enter, you know, the racetrack?

Yeah, I mean, it means a lot for me

to kind of be carrying the flag for the country.

You know, it's, I want to do everybody,

you know, I want to do a good job for everybody.

I want to represent, you know, the U.S.

the best that I can

and sometimes I feel like I am,

sometimes I feel like I'm not.

But yeah, it's like maybe like a bit of added pressure

but it's funny because I just got off the phone

before I was, before talking to you guys

I was talking to Joe Roberts

because he's in Hungary right now

at a track that I just raced at.

So we were talking about some stuff that.

Oh, that's right. The Balaton Park there, right?

That's, yeah, yeah.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

But we're like the only two Americans out there, you know

and so like it's cool to have a bit of camaraderie

between the two of us.

But I definitely wish that there was more opportunities

but you know, it's just, it's difficult.

Geographically we're far away from kind of where

the center is of motorcycle racing in Europe.

And so, you know, it's a,

we have to make more sacrifices

than the Europeans that you know

that are in the world championship to begin with.

Kind of like the Aussies.

The Aussies make a ton of sacrifices to go race

and we're not the only country

that has a more difficult time of it.

But yeah, it's just tough to get eyes on us too

because I mean, a lot of people watch Moto America

but maybe not the teams that we hope watch

to give us an opportunity.

And so I had to be pretty vocal.

I had to be pretty,

I went to Europe like quite a few times

just talking to people,

trying to find like a way that I could work myself

into a championship.

And I had to take a massive pay cut to go there.

But it was like, it was worth it to me

because I wanted to,

I wanted to see if I could do it.

That was my biggest curiosity is like,

hey, am I actually, do I think I'm good?

Or like, is there more for me to learn?

Like, you know, can I do it?

Can I not do it?

Like I had to answer the questions

or I had to have an answer for those questions.

So that's kind of why I did it.

But yeah, you got to make big sacrifices to go there.

Yeah, that's cool.

Super interesting background.

Yeah.

Well, I want to move on to...

You know, let's be honest.

You don't want to move on?

If we can sit here and just...

No, I really don't.

I have more questions for him.

Like, what did he learn on the World Speedway stage?

Okay, anyway.

Episode seven of season 10 this year was about,

was a deep dive on the Honda Gold Wing motorcycle,

which you're probably familiar with,

Garrett since you're a man of the people.

So I'm wondering,

well, first of all, a basic questions for you,

have you ever ridden a Gold Wing

or would you ever ride one?

But I'm gonna kind of add a little bit of a twist

on that question.

I'm curious if you've ever ridden one of what you thought.

But also my question is,

can you imagine an older, slower,

perhaps more rickety, some gray in his hair,

Garrett Gerloff, who just wants a big,

comfortable couch of a bike to ride

and wants to, you know,

see the world or see the country or something like that.

Yeah. I mean, no lie.

I looked at buying one last year.

Really?

I almost went to the Southern Honda.

What was the impetus?

You just, cause you were curious or what?

I'm just, yeah.

I just, I freaking like bikes.

I like motorcycles.

I don't know.

He already has a zoom of 125.

So let's go in the complete opposite direction.

That's right.

But I haven't ridden one now,

but I think it's like the DCT thing is cool, you know?

And I mean, that's why I like sport touring bikes

cause I don't like getting blown around, you know,

excessively if I can avoid it in the wind and stuff, you know?

So it's like, it's nice to got my HAC helmet

with the Bluetooth system.

And, you know, I can't hear my music as good

if the winds always hit me in the face.

So having a big windscreen is nice.

Like I'm an old man riding a ride.

You're an old soul.

I like it.

I think it's interesting that you mentioned the DCT.

Like one of the things that we talked about

on the episode was that, you know,

when Honda was talking about their stats,

it was like the Goldwing, the Africa Twin,

and I think it was the Rebel 1100,

the three main bikes that have DCT in North America.

It made up like, I don't know, Zach,

was it 60 or 70% of sales?

Huge number.

Yeah.

Like let's say 70% of sales,

people were opting for the DCT version.

So it's really interesting to me that, you know,

someone of your pedigree that's like using a clutch

and like you're using a finger for the rear brake

and like you've got so much talent in your two hands

that you would be interested in the DCT.

Yeah, I mean, I like convenience, you know?

I like conveniences and also like,

if I'm gonna buy a bike, I wanna use it.

And so, you know, if I don't have a place

to put my phone or I don't have a place

to put my helmet when I park or I, you know,

I can't sip my iced coffee while I'm riding, you know?

I, you know.

You want the cup holder.

You want the Kiriakan cup holder

right there in the park?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

You wanna go into like the Dunkin Donuts parking lot

and be able to get like your big golf coffee?

It's nice to have some convenience, you know?

Which is why I think it's cool, like Kawasaki.

You did, Zach, you rode the hybrid Kawasaki, right?

I did, yes.

That thing's an automatic, isn't it?

Yes.

Yeah, well, it's sort of like a semi-automatic.

It's like you can, it will shift for you

or you can use triggers with your fingers

to like shift through the gears.

So it's kind of interesting.

But yeah, it is ultimately the,

there's no, there's no foot control for the shifter.

It like, it is an automated system

that you can control electronically with your fingers

or just let the bike do the thing, yeah.

This is the Ninja Hybrid for the audience, correct?

The Ninja 7 Hybrid, yeah.

I think that's what you're talking about right there.

Yeah, exactly, yeah, yeah.

Like that's cool.

I just like that more manufacturers are bringing that in

because at the end of the day,

I want more people to ride, you know?

And so it's, especially in the US,

nobody can even drive a stick shift car anymore.

And so it's like, you know.

I just think it's, and in general,

I mean, I think the whole future

is single person transportation in general, you know?

I think, or closer to that, because I mean, if you got,

I mean, everybody on the road,

the traffic here in Houston is horrible.

And in LA, I know it's real bad too.

Yes, yes.

Because damn near everybody is just a single person

in a vehicle taking up a sh** out of space.

And it's like, you don't, that doesn't need to,

that doesn't need to be the case.

If everybody's like more on single person transport,

like transportation, I mean,

you can get the same million people

on a way smaller footprint.

It's like, why, why would that not be the way forward

with everything?

We were just having a worked in our last night.

He's a world super bike racer.

He's a civil engineer.

There's nothing this kid can't do, I'm telling you.

No, we were literally just having a,

so I'm in Philadelphia

and they're having a big transit budget problem.

They're going to be shutting down

a bunch of the buses and a bunch of the railways.

And one of the things they were talking about

was like traffic is going to be,

I mean, it's not good in Philadelphia

and it's going to get a lot worse with this.

And we were talking about just like lane splitting

in general, which was one of the topics

that we've talked about in previous seasons.

And, you know, you're mentioning Houston

and single person transportation.

Like one of the things that we talk about

a lot in the podcast is Zach has an advantage

to so many people because in California,

you can lane split.

And if you have a motorcycle,

getting through traffic is so much easier.

Have you, have you done the whole,

I mean, obviously with Europe and things,

have you done the whole lane splitting thing?

Like where do you stand on like pro or con for lane splitting?

Yeah, I'm fully for it.

I cannot stand the fact.

Like that's why I hate riding here sometimes

because I can't, you have no advantage

being on a, you know, a motorcycle here.

And I sometimes even have a disadvantage, right?

Because you get, you like bake in the heat or whatever.

Yeah, it's a hundred degrees out right now.

You know, I want to be able to keep moving,

keep some airflow on me and stuff.

I mean, I won't lie.

I do lane split all the time.

But I think it's like kind of careful, you know,

only when there's like standstill traffic and stuff.

Officer, I'm a professional.

Yeah, yeah, that's never worked.

We'll circle back to that later.

Yeah.

Yeah, but I mean, no, I'm fully for it.

That was so cool.

I lived in Andorra,

which is like this little country between Spain and France,

but I was in France and Spain all the time.

And I had a scooter over there.

And now it's lane split.

It's so nice.

I mean, it's, you just have every advantage.

You have every advantage and you can,

like I said, you can park anywhere.

It's like, I mean, yeah, I,

I wish I didn't need like a truck sometimes

because I wish I could just be on a bike the whole time.

It's just nice.

Yeah.

No, we talked about that a lot with like,

with like not being able to do it.

And it's like, okay, well, I'm going to drive to work today.

Do I take the truck where there's where it's air conditioned

when it's 102 degrees out or do I take the motorcycle?

And it's hard to justify the motorcycle

when you're just, you know, sitting in highway traffic.

Yeah.

But I do, I want to petition that every state

should allow lane splitting under 20 miles an hour

or something.

That should be a given.

It's like, it's legal.

Preach.

I've traveled all over the damn world.

It's legal everywhere.

The only place that's not legal

is 49 states in the US.

Is the land of the free.

Okay.

That's a, you, you continue to impress us

with your, with your hot takes and lane splitting.

No different.

We did it.

We did an episode eight, it was about group rides.

And in some ways, well, I'll just start with the basics.

You started this conversation by telling us

how you got into motorcycling

and how you sort of like, you were fractured

from your friend group when you were a child,

not to make light of that trauma,

but you, you looked at motorcycling

and you found a lot, you found a community there

and eventually a profession, which is amazing.

And I'm curious, you don't strike me

as the type of person who would,

would really like do a lot of group,

who like go on a street ride with other people.

Is that true?

Like, do you ever do that or no?

Yeah.

I mean, I, my brother has a bunch of groms.

And so like, we'll go, we'll go rip around the Woodlands,

which is, you know, North Houston

and we'll go mob around me and, you know, him

and two other friends and or whoever.

I mean, we'll put our girlfriends on the back and,

you know, it's, yeah, 100%.

I get nervous because like that is,

like group rides is like probably the number one place

where you're going to end up

getting like act by somebody.

And then somebody's looking around

and doesn't see you stopped in front of them.

And, you know, like that all kind of sketches me out, but yeah.

And so that my next,

my next part of this question was like a world tour bike race

is like in some ways the ultimate group ride

because there's a whole pile of you

going into turn one and two.

In fact, you got caught up in a melee in turn one, right?

Yeah.

Yeah, like three weeks ago, I still feel it.

Yeah, yeah.

And what track was that?

Was it, was it Cremona or most or?

That was the hungry track, Balaton Park.

Oh, that was Balaton Park.

Okay, gotcha.

Right, right, gotcha, gotcha.

And so there's probably like,

you had that experience getting whatever,

big pile of people and it sucked

and you got slapped on the ground.

And like, do you think about that kind of thing

when you're riding around on little minibikes,

on Groms with your brother?

You're sort of like,

yeah, I don't want to turn one situation here.

That's basically it, right?

Yeah, I definitely don't want to turn one situation.

But I mean, it's like here,

I'm mainly looking at all the big trucks everywhere.

It's Texas, so there's trucks everywhere

and everybody's got an F-250.

So I'm like,

especially if you're on like a little Kawasaki Z125

or a Grom or something, I mean,

dude, they can't see you at all.

That's what I'm mainly just looking at people's eyes,

like trying to find people's eyes

and where they're looking and stuff

and where the front wheels are pointed.

Who's, so you, I know that your brother,

you know, you guys started around the same time

on the street.

Who's a better rider?

Is your brother, has he kept up to you?

Can he still hang?

He's, I've had more practice over the years.

And so I think more practice sequels,

more potentially more skilled.

So maybe it's a practice issue.

Fair enough, fair enough.

Well, that's a very diplomatic way to put that.

I want to, on the topic of crashing actually,

because we mentioned that turn one pile up,

episode nine of our season,

this season was talking to some folks

who had some really horrific motorcycle crashes.

Some of them didn't even remember what happened.

And most of them, in fact,

all the people we talked to were amputees

of one type or another.

So they had, these are like really, really horrific,

traumatic crashes.

And I guess I think-

But they all came back from it.

And the theme was-

They didn't get back on the bike.

So passionate for riding

that they wanted to come back and ride again.

And so, you know,

you luckily have not had anything quite to that extent,

but you, being a racer, you've had crashes.

And I think broadly,

and Spurge will kind of let you take it after this question,

but we're curious how you come back from a crash

and how you get back in the saddle

and think like, I can do this.

Whether it was your fault or not your fault,

like there's always a little bit of angst, I think,

around getting back on the bike

and trying to do it again.

And do you have a mental checklist

or how do you handle that kind of thing?

I mean, I'm not gonna lie.

I haven't really thought about it a whole lot.

As far as like, I mean, it's my job.

And so, you know, if I'm not racing,

I'm not getting paid for one.

I mean, if I miss a certain amount of races,

I could potentially lose a certain amount of my pay.

So there's a pretty big financial incentive to race.

And so like that's, you know, there's that part.

Also like I'm fighting for championship positions

and every point that I can get.

And you know, I wanna keep furthering my career.

I wanna keep getting opportunities.

And so if I'm not performing, if I'm not getting points,

if I'm not close to that top 10

or in the top 10 of the championship,

like I want all of those things, you know?

And so that's like kind of where I put myself, I guess.

Like I'm just, I'm getting it done.

Like this is my job, you know?

Yeah, continue.

Well, I mean, I guess there's only been,

I've been lucky enough to not have

any like really serious crashes.

I mean, I broke my femur at Daytona when I was 16

and that was a big one.

Like that was the first bone I ever broke, you know?

So like after that one, I had,

I definitely had a hesitation of like, you know,

well, when I, after I broke it,

they put a rod in my leg and stuff.

And you know, as a kid,

I'm like, am I ever going to be able to walk again?

You know, like I was concerned about stuff like that.

And so like, I definitely had some,

some like hesitations getting back into the racing

as far as like not having it in the back of my head

as an issue or like as something

that was holding me back speed wise.

So I did have to get over that.

What got over that is me crashing again,

landing on the exact same leg

that I had just broke like 12 months before

and having everything be okay.

And I was like, oh, all right, I'm, you know, it's fine.

And so like from that point on, it's been, you know,

but I like, I always, I love riding obviously,

like I love being on two wheels and stuff.

So like I would always want to try to get back on

or like try to ride.

I'm more talking about

from a racing competitive perspective

than not like street riding.

Yeah.

Whether it's, sorry, I was just saying,

whether it's like that crash or another crash, like

do you, and let's stick with the racing mentality

for a second.

Cause I think that that's kind of apropos here,

but it doesn't have to not play in discreet riding

whether you're crashing on the discreet track,

but like, are there takeaways for you?

Like when you go down, like, like, do you,

do you think about like, what would I learn here

and how do I use this to make me faster?

And like, whether it was maybe the crash

where you broke your leg, like,

are you always thinking about like,

how to learn from the experience?

Or is it something where you're just trying

to like brush yourself up and get back on the bike?

A hundred percent.

I'm always thinking like, what the hell just happened?

Like, what did I just do?

What did I just do?

Or what did I just hit?

Or who just hit me?

Or like, you know, like all that,

like I'm always trying to figure out what went wrong

because obviously if you're on the ground,

something went wrong.

And so that's, that's always like the first thing

going through my head is like, is it my fault?

Cause if it's my fault, my team's not going to be

super happy.

So let me try to figure out if it's like,

what I'm walking into.

Yeah.

Or, you know, something went wrong with the bike.

But yeah, I'm never, I've never, like I said,

besides breaking my femur,

I've never had a crash and then been like,

Oh, like, do I actually want to get back on the bike

and ride?

That's never crossed my mind.

Yeah.

Like every time I've crashed,

I've always been like, where's my bike?

Let's go.

Gotta go again.

Well, yeah, I mean, I think we get,

I certainly get a fair number of messages

from people talking about, you know,

getting spooked, you know, like say they're on a ride

and they go through a corner and they,

I don't know, they hit some leaves

or maybe they even just like, you know,

they sort of like low side and they don't know why

or they run off the outside of the curve

because they were going too fast

and then they're just like really spooked by that.

And it sounds like, I mean,

if I don't want to put words in your mouth,

but tell me if I'm on the right track here.

What I'm hearing from you is kind of like,

you have an inherent confidence

in both your love of riding

and your skill set on a motorcycle.

So if you go into a corner at a racetrack, say,

and you lose the front end and you slide,

you know, you tuck the front

and you slide off into the gravel trap

and you're like, why just, I made a mistake.

I like, I went into that corner too fast

or like I did something that was wrong

and now I'm in the gravel trap.

The next time you go into that left-hand corner,

it's not a matter of like,

like you can't afford the doubt basically.

Like you have an inherent belief that like, I can do it.

Like I can go through this corner at that speed

or close to it or whatever and successfully navigate it

and like, you know, make it around the next lap

and through the next race.

And it's not like a, it's not a fracture

in any kind of like overall confidence

you have in your ability on a bike.

Yeah, I guess one of the things I forgot to like

put into the equation is that like,

I feel safe in what I'm wearing,

like with my gear and stuff like that.

Like, I got like an Alpine Star airbag, Alpine Star suit,

gloves, boots, HAC helmet.

Like I feel safe in all the stuff that I'm in.

And so I've, you know, like I'm not scared to crash at all

because the likelihood of me coming out of it fine

is so high that I don't really have any issue

with the like me potentially crashing.

Right, the consequences are basically.

Yeah, it's like the consequences

are going to be pretty low for the most part.

Yeah, is it so possible that I get seriously hurt for sure?

But I mean, it's like, I'm just confident

in all the protective gear that I'm wearing.

And so like crashing and I'm not worried about hitting a tree.

I'm not worried about running off the road.

Like you're talking about, you know, it's like,

I'm worried about other people running me over.

But there's like, there's more body work

and more foot pegs and more handlebars

back in the garage.

The bike will get fixed.

You'll back up on the track.

Like it's a, it is in some ways a different like sort of

financial and psychological environment for you

than it is for someone on the street.

And I totally appreciate that.

But it is interesting.

I think still to hear your take on it,

which is like you both, you both like it.

And you know, you, you're like determined to do it.

And so you don't let it affect you.

Yeah.

And it's like, and I have a totally different mindset

when I ride on the street.

Like when I ride on the street,

I'm as cautious as I can be.

I'm always looking to see what other people

are doing in their cars and stuff.

Like, oh, you know, I ride on the street.

Like I only live once in the negative sense.

And that's, you know, I don't want to destroy my bike

that I paid a bunch of money for and stuff like that.

So I like, I have a totally different mindset

when I'm riding on the street.

I'm not pushing, I'm not trying to,

I think more people should get into track riding

just so that they can get out all of the stuff

that they want to try on the street.

Just go to track, get a cheap bike, you know,

that you can get on Facebook marketplace,

something like that, you know, for a couple grand,

get out there, you know, try to get your knee down

and all that stuff.

And then get back on your normal bike and chill.

Back on your scooter.

Just, yeah, whatever it is, and just chill, you know,

have fun, you know, win in your face like.

Just backing up for one second,

because it's something we've been talking on,

you know, a lot about in the last couple of years,

but like how has the introduction of, of like airbag

technology changed, you know,

that comfort level of safety for you on a motorcycle?

Because I'm assuming when you started out in your career,

you maybe presumably didn't have airbags

and then you were kind of like working your way

through the evolution where now you're racing

with a full airbag system.

How has that changed from a mental standpoint

with that new technology kind of entering the equation?

Yeah, massive change.

I mean, I have all my leathers actually

from like my whole, you know, racing career.

And so like I'll go back and pick up the leathers

that I was wearing on a super bike in America.

And I'm like, dude, how was I okay with wearing that?

You know, like it's a, yeah,

getting wearing a suit now without an airbag

just doesn't feel right.

And I definitely have more going through my brain of like,

Hey, you know, yeah.

So having an airbag now takes away a lot of the kind of

maybe doubt that could be there.

Now that I know what it's like to crash with an airbag,

like I'll never forget it was a Magny Core 2021.

It was a practice that was rained out.

So we were, we were riding in the rain

and I high-sided in one of the third gear corners.

And I remember like I left the bike, was in the air,

the airbag went off in the air and I landed on the,

I landed on the ground, but like it legit felt like nothing.

I mean, it was like my heels hit the ground kind of hard,

but like it was nothing like in the rain and stuff too,

when you land, you slide more.

Right, so slippery, yeah.

So it's like, so it's combination of the raining, the airbag.

I mean, it was literally like, I didn't even,

it felt like I didn't even crash.

That's not every situations I'll put that out there,

but like in that situation, I was like,

dude, this is unreal.

I can't believe that I just high-sided.

Yeah, it is.

I mean, it's cool that they have things where events

where they like let people feel an airbag going off on them.

And obviously you'd never want to chuck someone out

of a moving car so that they could feel what it's like.

But it is like, it is transformative

when you actually hit the ground,

actually fall off a motorcycle and have it go off

and be like, oh, whoa.

There's like a, it feels so different.

And it's like really cool that you're able to remember that

and explain it, because that's a, that is a,

and it's a great question, Spurge,

to even just the psychology of a racer.

And as you pointed out, Garrett,

not that people should think that they're invincible

when they're hanging an airbag,

but like it is such a massive step forward in safety.

For sure.

And now Alpine Star has that tech air system

for street riding and stuff with like a street algorithm.

So it's not going to go off all the time early.

Right.

And like, I have one of those and I wear it

when I ride on the street and makes me feel safer.

I'm still not going to be an idiot.

Like I'm still not going to do anything crazy,

but like, at least I know if God forbid a car hits me

or something, like at least I got something

that is going to be between me and that car.

Or if you and your brother head back

to that church parking lot and you high side again.

That's right.

Yeah, honestly.

Okay.

Let's move on.

We only got a couple of things left here

and then we'll do it in sound guessing game

and let you get on with the rest of your life.

But we do have a couple of things we wanted to ask you.

Episode 10 was about the rise of Chinese motorcycles

and we talked about a few different ways

that Chinese motorcycles are entering the marketplace,

specifically the US market,

because that's what we're sort of most familiar with.

Whether it's companies that are really just sort of like,

you know, hanging out their own shingle

and making their own bikes in the same way

that KTM or BMW or Honda does.

And then other business models

where they'll ship you a motorcycle in a crate from China

and there's no dealer network

and there's no help or anything,

but here you go, you can have a cheap motorcycle.

There's a variety of things.

I know that like CFMoto, for example,

is a Chinese motorcycle company

that we talked about a fair amount in that podcast.

CFMoto is spending money on the world championship side.

I think they're spending, they have a Moto3 team

that's not a CFMoto bike,

but is a CFMoto sponsored bike

and there's CFMoto blasted all over the Moto3 paddock.

And I guess I'm curious if you have thought

about Chinese motorcycles at all

and you think that that's something

where that industry will creep into world championship racing

or maybe even a Chinese bike will make its way

into your garage.

Any thoughts on the subject?

Yeah, I mean, there's a...

Well, I guess to start with,

they are more price competitive, yeah?

I mean, they end up being cheaper in a lot of ways, you know?

I don't really know about reliability and stuff like that,

but if it's gonna help people get into motorcycling,

like I'm all about it, you know?

If somebody can get a lower price point

where they wouldn't normally buy a motorcycle,

but now that it's in their price range,

like I think that's awesome

just to get more people on bikes.

So I'm fully for it, you know, for that.

But yeah, like in racing, there's a QJ motors

that is a Chinese brand that's out there

in the Supersport class.

Oh, that's right.

Sorry, this is 300, Supersport 300, is that right?

No, it's the middle, I don't know what they call it now.

It's not really 600s anymore,

but like, yeah, the Supersport 600 class,

the middle way class.

Okay, gotcha, gotcha.

I didn't realize that, right?

Not a championship.

Yeah, so my team owner is actually in charge

of that program.

Like I actually kind of have a close view of everything.

And I mean, from what I'm just relaying

what my team owner says,

he just, he says he can't believe how quick they are

to get things done, you know, like they needed it.

They were having issues with the bike.

The bike is heavy right now.

And within like a month,

they brought out a fully new chassis that was like,

I don't know, close to 10 kilos lighter

or something like that than the one that they started the year

with, but like, they're just,

it might not always be the right thing,

but they're so quick at getting stuff done.

Like that sounds cool with somebody that likes to tinker

and try new stuff for the racing side.

Like that's cool for them, I guess.

But yeah, I mean, I think competition is better

in general, you know?

So if there's more manufacturers,

they're producing quality stuff or good stuff

or it's gonna push everybody else to make better stuff,

be more price competitive, like all of that.

So I think that's not like necessarily a bad deal.

Garrett, I know we-

Will I ever buy one?

Probably not, not anytime soon.

I mean, I'm, you know, I like my Japanese stuff.

I like, you know, German stuff.

I don't know.

So yeah.

I know you travel the world a lot more than Zach and I do.

You know, do you see when you're in different markets,

when you're looking for a scooter to rent

in a different country, do you see a lot more,

you know, permeation of Chinese motorcycles

and marketplaces around the world than you do in the US,

just based on, you know, your anecdotal experiences?

Yeah.

For when it comes to like, like something

that I'm gonna rent in a city, yeah,

they're almost always like,

if not a Chinese brand, like Chinese made, you know,

like I think Piaggio is like the Piaggio group.

Yeah.

They own a Prily and stuff like that.

Correct, yeah.

Like a lot of their scooters are made in China

if I'm not mistaken.

So it's like, you know,

that's like a Italian brand.

It's still made in China.

From what I understand, the C400X that I had,

the BMW scooter, that thing was made in China.

It was like a Kimco.

I could be wrong.

No, I think Kimco, I think is Korean.

Is that Korean?

Okay.

It's something, I think it might be Taiwan.

To what Taiwanese?

Okay.

Anyway.

But yeah, point being they're globally sourced machines

whether they're branded as such or not, right?

I think that's kind of what you're getting at.

Yeah, yeah.

I mean, like I said, if quality stays the same

and price goes down,

I think that's better for everybody.

What I don't want to see is price go down

and then everything get worse.

And then, you know,

and then you get into a situation

to where everybody is losing.

So.

Well, I think it becomes discouraging, right?

Cause you talked about like if quality stays high

but price goes down,

you can bring new people in the market.

They get excited about riding.

I think, you know,

one of the things that we had talked about

in this particular episode was that

if you're introducing a new rider to motorcycling

and they have a poor experience with the motorcycle

because the motorcycle is just not good,

then all of a sudden that person's like,

well, I don't want to do this anymore.

I want to go back to my Honda Civic

and just, you know, turn the air conditioning on

and, you know, pop a cassette deck,

you know, cassette tape on my deck.

Yeah, you know,

like the kids like to do.

Yeah, yeah, we're tired.

Well, no, I'm saying the kids today

or they're coming back with tapes.

They're coming back.

Everything is old is new again.

So.

Anyway.

No, that's true, that's true.

I mean, I would think that you've got to know

when you buy something like,

if you're buying something that's cheaper,

you got to think there's a reason for it, you know?

So it's like, if they did have a poor experience,

you kind of got to put that on yourself.

You got to self-reflect a little bit, you know?

I don't think we're living in a society

where most kids are self-reflecting, Garrett,

you know?

You might be giving people too much credit.

It's easier to point the finger at somebody else.

Yeah, it's true.

Well, I'm most excited about this one.

I'm asking this question.

All right, so you mentioned,

you mentioned this is from episode 11.

Episode 11 was our comments episode.

And we basically spent the entire episode

going through and answering questions from our audience.

And we saved a question for you

because we know that you like to ride

your motorcycle on the street.

And a few questions ago,

you actually alluded to maybe having some dead ends

with the law.

So our question that came in from the audience was,

I've wondered this for a while,

but this question was originally directed at Zach and I.

What is RevZilla's ticket policy?

If you were or if you were Zach were to get a ticket,

you know, I've watched daily rider episodes

multiple times in the podcast

where quote unquote, top speed is mentioned.

I've re-listened to the 100th episode

and Ari said something about setting the cruise control

at 130 miles per hour in S1000XR.

Riding motorcycles,

it's easy to go past the speed limit.

What is the policy for,

you know, a misunderstanding with a ticket?

So I know this question was directed at Zach and I

and potentially Ari with the RevZilla side,

but Garrett, what's the policy?

If you were, first of all,

have you ever gotten a ticket

and what's your fun story with a run-in with the law

if you have one?

So I've never gotten a motorcycle ticket ever.

So that is all I mean.

Knock on wood, knock on wood, yeah, I'm just saying.

But I got pulled over one time

and it's funny because I think it was actually

right after I had met you guys on Sunday at Kota two years ago.

Okay, we're at Kota?

No, no, so I was riding for BMW at the time

and like I went to Kota in 2023 to do video stuff for them.

And so I rode the M1000RR on the track

and did like a video for them there.

But anyway, as kind of a joke and kind of like,

hey, I'm a BMW guy, I rode my scooter,

my BMW scooter from Houston to Austin for the race weekend.

And so like I, so I rode it there.

I did all the stuff I had to do during Kota

and then I was there late on Sunday

and I rode back Sunday night, but like super late.

And so I was probably, I was 20 miles from home

at like one in the morning, Monday morning.

And I'm, you know, I'm not doing,

I'm not going 15 over in a 50.

So I'm just trying to get on that.

And you're in Texas, like that's allowed, right?

Yeah, that's what I would have thought, you know?

But when the lights came on, I thought maybe not.

And so anyway, a cop pulled me over,

but he was, he was cool in the end.

But I mean, it's like one in the morning.

So I was like, hey, I'm sorry.

Like I'm not trying to do anything crazy.

I'm just trying to get home.

I had like a bag and everything tied to the back.

And, you know, I had all this stuff

with my backpack in between my legs, you know?

So he knew I was like, I knew I wasn't lying.

I'm on a damn scooter.

So it's like, anyway, so he ended up letting me go.

But that was, that's like the only run in I've had.

Did you, and did that conversation,

was it just sort of an apology

and like, hey, man, I'm just trying to get home thing?

Or did it come up that you're a professional racer

and like, did you pull any strings?

Like, did you try to like throw anything at him or?

No, I've never tried to pull that out

because I'm scared that it's going to end up backfiring.

And he's like, oh, you're a racer.

So you like to go fast, you know?

Oh, you're gonna pay for that, buddy.

Yeah, I don't want it to like come back and bite me.

So I kind of just like,

and I kind of learned that lesson

when I took my motorcycle safety school,

when I got my motorcycle license,

I had brought up that I was a racer

and stuff thinking that it would help me

to be like, to like breeze through the course.

And they made it so much harder for me.

Like, they made it tougher for me to pass

because they're like, oh, you're a big motorcycle guy.

Like, oh, you're a big fancy motorcycle guy.

Were you, when you did that,

were you racing Moto America,

are you racing AMA, whatever, Moto America at that time?

Yeah, yeah, I think it was like 2016,

maybe 2016, 2017, something like that.

And I rode to the class and back every day.

And they were like, you can't do that.

I'm like, ah, it's fine.

So, so.

You're like, you're here to get your license,

you can't ride to them.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Well, Garrett, I know one of the things

that Zach and I were talking about,

like I know with certain,

and obviously you're in a very specific industry,

but like with certain athletes,

there's clauses in their contracts.

They're not allowed to ride a motorcycle

because they don't want them to be injured

and they want them on the field on Sunday.

You know, for yourself,

like do you have any rules about like riding on the street

or like how you, you know,

participate in motor sports when you're not on the racetrack?

Is that anything that's ever come up for you

as a professional athlete?

Yeah, the biggest thing that I've always had an issue

with or like a clause about is motocross.

So like, they just don't want us doing jumps and stuff.

Obviously like it is dangerous.

A lot of guys, a lot of road race guys

do get hurt on motocross bikes.

So I get where it comes from,

but I love riding motocross.

And so, you know, I end up talking to them about it

and it ends up being okay to where I do a lot of my riding

during the winter months

when there's not like a lot of racing going on.

But that seems to be the biggest thing that the,

and they don't want me skateboarding

and going to half pipes.

And I mean, there's like clauses like that.

But when it comes to riding on the street,

I've never, I've never had a clause

that I can't ride on the street actually.

So, I mean, I think it kind of defeats the purpose too,

because I mean, the whole idea behind racing,

the reason why it exists is to sell bikes,

you know, that people ride on the street, really.

I mean, so it's like, yeah, it kind of defeats the purpose

if you're not going to do that, you know.

And so I, I keep doing it.

Yeah, fair enough.

Zach, how about you?

Do you have a ticket story?

Do you have any reckless riding

that you got pulled over for?

Have you ever crashed on the street?

Have I ever crashed on the street?

Yeah, I have, oh yeah.

Definitely, have you?

So actually, that was, so that's,

and I don't have any awesome ticket stories

just to touch on that.

I have, yeah, I've never had like,

I've had, in general, when I've been pulled over

by a motorcycle cop on a motorcycle,

I've had them be pretty reasonable,

especially reasonable, because you're sort of like,

there's a little bit of like, you know,

brotherly bond there, you're sort of like, okay, cool.

And once they see that you're not a total jack wagon

they're like, they're pretty, pretty cool in general.

But I'm, well, I'll borrow a story that Ari has

about getting pulled over.

He got pulled over one time years and years ago

and the guy, the guy pulled him over

and they pulled his helmet off

and he was like, oh, you're Ari Hennig

from Motorcycles Magazine.

I like followed your, and like,

is this your project bike?

I've been following the magazine.

It was really cool.

And Ari was like, oh, cool.

This guy knows who I am.

Like, he get, he get, like, he knows the bike

and he knows me and he knows the magazine

and he knows what I'm doing here

and this is my job.

And at the end, the guy was like, anyway,

here's your $450 ticket.

And he was like, what the,

like, I wouldn't have been so friendly to you

if you ended up in here.

You're just gonna burn me down in the end.

So yeah, to your point, it doesn't always work.

But I have crashed on the street

and I'm actually not to retread too much

of our conversation, but I'm curious.

You know, we were talking about crashing

and you were talking about the airbag on the track

and you said, well, I ride in the street.

It's a totally different thing.

I have a totally different mindset,

which is fair and accurate as far as I'm concerned

about the difference between riding, you know,

on the track and street.

But what is your street crash story?

He asked you first.

Oh, yeah, I get it.

You tell us yours first and then we'll get Garrett's.

Which one do you want?

I don't know.

God, do I have one that's good?

The worst, the most memorable one.

Or embarrassing.

Yeah.

Or embarrassing, yeah.

The most embarrassing one.

Yeah, I did have a,

I had like a break check crash one time

where like I was riding with,

actually with Aerie and another former colleague of ours

and we got into like, whatever.

Someone like, they jumped on the brakes in front of me

and like, and then Aerie got in the brakes

and then I didn't see him.

And then I got on the brakes and then I crashed

and then I ended up in a ditch and it was really dumb.

But I think, right.

What's that?

Group rise.

Did you say group rise?

Yeah, exactly right.

You can't trust your friends.

That's right.

Yeah.

And I mean, that was a good lesson.

I've been talking on the podcast before.

It was a good lesson in sort of like,

if you're, if you have people behind you

and you see the turn you're supposed to make,

like don't fricking slam on the brakes.

Like just, just miss the turn.

Do your turn to like take your time

take a breath, don't do whatever.

That one's pretty embarrassing.

I mean, the worst street crash I've had, I think

was actually a rear end incident where like I,

well, this is a little bit anticlimactic,

but I'm pretty sure someone cut in front of me

and then they got on the brakes and then I didn't,

I couldn't stop, but I don't remember sadly

because I rang my bell pretty good.

Yeah.

That was bad.

And I ended up like, you know,

I ended up taking a ride in the ambulance to hospital

and I believe the, what was it?

I'm trying to remember the medical term.

I don't know if I can, it was hemorrhaging

of the testicles is the essentially what happened.

I had a lot of internal bleeding

and as you can imagine, quite a bit of pain.

Yeah, they're doing your favors at all.

No, sadly, no, my pelvis was not broken in the end,

which is what I thought had happened.

So that was a real win.

If you can take it away.

But yeah, there's a friendship.

I never know you're ruptured to testicles.

That's crazy.

No, not ruptured hemorrhaging, internal bleeding,

I think was the, and based on the color that they turned,

I think that the internal bleeding

was an accurate diagnosis.

Anyway, what about you, Gary?

What's your, what's your street crash story?

And, and yeah,

does it pertain to the previous conversation we had?

Yeah, well, I mean, mine's embarrassing.

Like it was, it was during COVID

and I had that damn BMW scooter.

So I had the scooter and I thought racing was over.

Like I thought COVID was going to bring the end to racing as a,

I mean, I thought everything was kind of like, it was good.

It was all weird, you know?

Like they cut the championship off to where I didn't think

we were going to have a championship for that year.

So like if there's no championship, I'm not getting paid.

I ended up getting a job and during COVID.

And so like I had to ride,

I was riding the work every day, you know?

And so I left early one morning.

It was like 45 degrees outside.

And I'm like, there's a light at the end of my neighborhood

that's always red.

And this is the one time that it was still green.

And so I was trying to make the light

where I have to take a right, you know?

So relatable, yeah, yeah.

You know, because like there's always so many cars going,

you have to wait forever to take a right.

And so anyway, so like the thing's green.

I'm like, I'm going to make it.

And then it goes yellow right as I'm coming up to it,

but like still a ways back, you know?

And so it's cold outside.

You know, I just fired the thing up.

And I've ridden maybe a mile down the street.

Break hard, I go into the corner

and like it kind of rains, but not rains.

So there was like a strip of water

that was coming out into the intersection.

So cold tires, a strip of like moist asphalt

that was out into the intersection.

And there was a motorcycle dude

that was waiting at the light to go, right?

And so like I'm like,

the tires have always been fine on that thing.

Like I kind of, you know, I'm always,

they always have a grip.

And so I wasn't super concerned.

So I break hard, you know, I start going to the corner.

I see the motorcycle guy and I give him a wave.

Oh, you give him a wave one hand off the bar, okay.

Yeah, a wave.

And as I give him the wave,

I like go to put my hand back on the bar

and I go over that water

and I lose the front on that water

on a yellow now red light.

And I end up spinning out into the intersection.

And I mean, I've never,

I didn't let go the handlebars,

but I've never picked up a bike so fast in my life.

I mean, before I'm even like stop, slide,

and I pick the thing up and I, you know,

restart and take off.

Wave at him, wave at him again.

You're like, I'm good, I'm good, I'm good, I'm good.

Yeah, yeah.

Well, what happened is that I was stuck at the light

at the next intersection, right down the road.

And the dude caught up to me

and like you can't see the lanes, like I said.

So he's like, he caught up to me

and I'm just sitting there, you know,

with my tail tucked and stuff.

And I was only wearing jeans and a sweatshirt,

by the way.

So I mean like, and like some motocross gloves.

So I did not have the right gear on,

but like I was all fine, luckily.

But he comes up to me and he's like,

dude, like something to the effect of like,

man, I really think you should like

take a motorcycle safety school.

So that, you know, because he just like, you know,

saw me as somebody who didn't know

what the hell I was doing.

And I fully capitulated.

I was like, all right, yeah, a hundred percent.

Like, can you give me a place to go?

Like give me a name or something.

Oh my God.

And light turned green, I took off.

That's so funny.

That's great.

There's nothing worse than crashing

in front of other motorcyclists.

I was at, I think it was the launch

for when Triumph introduced the Scrambler 1200.

And we were in Portugal,

and they gathered everybody around,

because it was raining.

It was like eight o'clock in the morning,

it was raining, and they gathered everybody

in the front parking lot and they're like, listen,

the roads in Portugal are like ice when it rains.

Everybody, we're just gonna keep the pace low,

we're gonna take it easy until the rain stops,

and nobody's gonna get hurt.

And everybody's like, yeah, sure, absolutely.

And we literally leave the parking lot

and we're making like a right hand turn

at like 15 miles an hour.

And this was one of the few crashes I've had where I'm like,

I still have no idea.

It just like, the whole front end just washed out

and we were going fast enough

that I just slid across the asphalt.

And the same thing, like I was the last person,

there was like a ride leader guy behind me

and he came up, he's like, what happened?

I'm like, I don't know.

And like no one was hurt,

but like I picked the bike up

and like these like scratches all on the side

and like my knee braces took the brunt of it.

But it was like, that was probably my most embarrassing crash

cause they had just given everybody this speech.

Right.

And like, and it wasn't like we were doing anything stupid.

It was just like, we're just going through the corner

and just the front end just just slid right out.

And the guy was like, are you okay?

And I'm like, yeah, he's like, what happened?

I'm like, I don't know.

You're like, I'm not very good at this.

Not good at this.

And you just knew it was all credibility immediately.

Oh yeah.

Just out the window.

Tough.

He was like, you should go take a motorcycle safety course.

I'm like, I will.

Yeah, I'll see you there.

Yeah.

That's a great story.

And I'm like, obviously glad you're okay.

Both of you, but especially you, Garrett,

with the, you know, crashing like that is, you know.

I mean, that's what I get for being done on the screen.

The important thing is you never hemorrhaged your testicles.

which I should have known is like, yeah, smaller.

Gosh, you know, because this episode,

a lot of this episode was a retread

of the whole season that we did.

Maybe I'm trying to think about anything really specific.

I think that my favorite piece from this whole episode

was that story about Garrett crashing

on his cold tire scooter

and then having the guy on the motorcycle say,

like, hey man, you should really take

like a riding course or something.

And he was a, even being a World Street Bike Racer

was humble enough to be like, yeah, you know,

you're probably right.

Can you give me a name?

And I think that that's, you know,

that's a funny story and a fun story and everything.

But the big takeaway for me there is,

goes back to another answer that Garrett gave,

which is about the cross training thing

and how, you know, he might ride a trials bike around

at five miles an hour and work on clutch control.

He's a World Street Bike Racer.

He doesn't even use the clutch

when he's riding his World Street Bike.

And he's certainly not riding around at five miles an hour.

He's going much, much faster than that.

So what do you learn?

Well, you learn something every time you get on a bike.

And I think I really liked those two,

those two kind of stories and, you know,

anecdotes and takeaways from Garrett's time with us today

really reminded me that if you have your head screwed

on straight, which I think he does,

it doesn't matter how good a rider you are,

you're always learning stuff, you know?

And that's like a good, it's a good thing for us

to take away, I think at the end of a season

when we won't be in your ear for quite as long,

you have the fall of 2025 here to go out

and enjoy riding your motorcycle.

And hopefully you'll take that opportunity to, you know,

try something or at least when you're on the bike,

take in new information and learn something.

Any big takeaways here?

It's interesting.

I'm actually just going back and like,

you're looking at some of the questions

that we had asked Garrett

and then how that relates back to the seasons.

And it's always interesting to me

when we come to the end of a season

because time moves fast and it's weird.

And like, even when we were starting this episode,

we were talking about the fact that like,

we haven't sat down to record an episode

in over four weeks, right?

Because of the way that we record them

and then they release.

And we've just, we've gotten to talk

to a lot of really cool people this season.

We've had some really interesting guests on

and, you know, this is still one of my favorite parts

of the job and the time always just kind of flies.

And then you go back and, you know,

people sometimes will ask like,

do you go back and re-listen to episodes

and I listen to them usually once is like a,

we review them before they grow out.

But I'm always impressed at like how you'll say something

and I'll laugh and we can kind of crack each other up.

It's a very natural experience

and I'm really fortunate that we get to do this.

I think what I would like to leave the audience with

if you would be so willing is we had talked to Garrett

about, you know, motorcycle superstitions

and in pre-production, you were telling a story

that we all got a laugh out of.

And I'm thinking back to all the times

I laugh when I listen to your stories

and I'm wondering if you would be willing

to share with the audience a time

when a younger Zac courts was interviewing a racer

and he told a story about his superstition

and maybe some people that were listening were like,

oh man, I wish I wouldn't have told that story

but you actually found it enjoyable.

That's fine.

I do love that story.

I appreciate that.

I went to Circuit of the Americas in 2013, I think it was.

Is that right?

Gosh, when before the first MotoGP

at Circuit of the Americas had ever taken place

and there was a private test with the factory Yamaha team

and the factory Honda team

and maybe like a satellite Honda team or something like that.

And they were there to test the circuit

to make sure it was okay.

And obviously they used that as an opportunity

to test the bike and get to know the circuit a little bit.

And I interviewed one Marc Marquez

before he had ever taken part in a MotoGP race

which was a cool opportunity,

especially in retrospect considering,

I mean, he was already an amazing talent at that point

and everyone in MotoGP was looking at him thinking

they were worried because he was obviously so good.

But it was before he had ever taken a green flag in MotoGP

and I asked him the question about superstitions.

I said, do you have any superstitions?

And he said, oh, not really.

No.

Well, I do, I wear blue underwear on Friday and Saturday

and then I wear red underwear on Sunday

because at the time MotoGP had the thing

and like the timing screens was like,

you know, if it was like a blue helmet

next to your name on the timing screen,

it was that it meant like your personal fastest lap.

And then if it was like a red helmet,

it meant fastest lap of the session

or something like that or something like that.

And I was like, that's a fantastic answer.

Like I just learned that Marc Marquez

changes the color of his underwear

so that he goes extra fast on Sunday.

And you knew what an underwear color

he was wearing right then, based on the day.

Yeah, I didn't ask him what color underwear do you wear

when you get interviewed by some journalist from America.

But anyway, afterward, yeah, one of the Honda reps

came up to you and he was like, God, I'm really like,

I don't know, I'm sorry that he talked about his underwear

and like, that's really inappropriate, you know?

And I was obviously like, that's an amazing story.

Like, that's incredible.

I couldn't have hoped, I thought he might say like,

oh, I don't know.

I always like, you know, I touch my forehead

and I think of my mother before I go on the track

because like, I love my mother.

And you'd be like, okay, great,

whatever, everybody loves their mother.

Anyway, that was a super fun interaction

and, you know, not to tear down Garrett's answer,

which was sort of like, no, no, I don't wanna do that.

But I did, I do love that story

and I think it's a really fun window into the mind

of, you know, was one of the greatest racers

of all time before he was on the biggest stage of his life.

So thanks for choosing me.

No, when you told that story,

I think it's always interesting to see how like

the OEMs react or like the rep from Honda was like,

I wish you wouldn't have said that.

It's like, why would you not want him to say like,

it humanizes people, right?

It totally humanizes them.

Like some of these OEMs are just so like,

no, it has to be this box and we have to fit it in here.

It's just like, yeah.

Yeah, exactly, right.

And I don't have like, I'm not,

I don't know Mark Mark has personally at all.

But I think that's one of the things

that he's really, really good at is being personable.

You know, like his being a human being.

It's like when he answers questions,

he's real about stuff, you know?

I think it's one of the things

that made Valentino Rossi so popular.

And that's just in the little window

of international road racing, you know?

But I think being human is like a, such a big thing.

We saw it with Garrett today, right?

He's like so easy to root for.

When you talk to him, you're like,

oh, he's like a real person who cares about stuff

aside from riding around on motorbikes.

Not that that isn't fun and cool,

but like there's other stuff in the world

to worry about.
