This is the In Wheel Time car talk show.
The head, brad in Garcia, with Hemmings, talks about your collector car money and the scary internet and how not to get scammed.
Later on we'll have what's On TV this week, along with the stories making automotive news headlines.
Howdy, along with Mike out of this World, mars.
We always need more.
Jeffrey Zekin, I'm, don Armstrong, glad you could join us on this Saturday If you're watching or listening on our live stream.
If not, you're listening to a podcast and we certainly thank you for that.
You said something to me earlier about that.
We need to give everybody a heads up about giving us their email address.
Why is that Mars, because we're putting together a newsletter that whenever you go out to our podcast, for example, there's a place on there that you can put your email address in.
Our website has one also and we're going to start generating that email out weekly about the show.
You can also go when you go to YouTube.
You can subscribe so that you'll get notified every time we have a new podcast video that goes up.
Our audio podcast now are on YouTube as well.
If you've got access to YouTube going down the road and you don't want to watch it, but you can listen to it and you can get the same thing.
There's lots of ways to find us and we're trying to keep everybody in place.
Well, I told Mars.
I said we got to make darn sure we tell everybody we ain't selling your email address.
That ain't happening, so do the email address and you keep up with us.
Yes and subscribe in general.
And if you subscribe and Mike and I get that information from people that are subscribing, we'll say hi to you on the air.
Yeah, facebook, you can follow us.
Candice Thackeray's been with us this morning.
Yeah.
George Douglass Schaefer out of Corpus Christi, my cousin.
How you doing, brother?
Okay?
So we got.
We actually have people watch and listen every once in a while.
Spread the word, spread the word.
As a matter of fact, we're spreading the word right now and we're going to talk to Brandon Garcia with Hemings.
Brandon, good morning, good morning guys.
How are you?
Very well, thank you, and we appreciate you joining us on your day off and yeah, you know no days off here, no.
Yeah, we know, we know about that, that Hemmings bunch up.
Yeah, you work seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
There's cars to sell Customers to, to enter the phones for.
Yeah, well, I have to tell you.
So we do a feature every week based on Hemmings dot com sold cars roundup, and we play a little game and try to guess how with with the guys of how much the car actually sold for.
And I'll just I'll give one away.
So a week before last, the 2000 Chevy Corvette that looks good.
We don't go into all the details about it, but a 2000 Chevy Corvette.
I know how much I paid for my 2001 Chevy Corvette.
Well, as it turns out, this is pretty close to that.
It's sold week before last for $16,800.
So we kind of do that, except I don't tell them what the car sold for they have to guess.
They have to guess.
He gives us the minor details it's red, it's a Corvette, it's a year.
What do you think it's worth?
Sometimes we're pretty close and sometimes we're not.
No, sometimes we're not and but.
But we kind of talk about it and it's kind of a fun thing to do and thanks to Hemmings for giving us that information.
But today we're today.
Today.
I'm sorry.
If your listeners want to get that same same sold car roundup, make sure they sign up for our newsletter.
You can be in the know with the in wheel time guys.
There you go.
Exactly Perfect.
So today let's talk about Money and let's talk about money transfers and DMV paperwork and identity fraud and the classic cars.
So you know, I can only imagine when we're talking.
Let's just say that Corvette $16,000, that's a lot of money to transfer off of a Heming sold car roundup.
Yeah, and you know your precursor to our conversation was spot on.
It is a scary process, you know, especially with the internet these days.
And you know the product is called Heming's Paying Title.
We talked about it a few weeks ago when I was in Pomona, california, at the Fairplex.
This is a product.
After listening to our customers for months, months and months and months and understanding where their pain points are, where the friction is happening amongst their buying and selling experience, you know so that the product Heming's Paying Title eliminates payment fraud and titling fraud.
So just imagine you know we've all been there some more than most you buy a vehicle, you are unsure, you know if the seller owns the vehicle.
You end up accepting an offer or making an offer and then you have to transfer funds, almost every time in the tens of thousands of dollars, and folks want to meet up at the bank, folks want a briefcase full of cash and it's a very intimidating process, especially for those who didn't grow up in the hobby.
You know we pride ourselves at Hemingscom providing a landing spot for a novice, ora seasoned collector, so there's not those novice folks who are getting their feet wet.
It's a very intimidating process.
So Heming's Paying Title solves all that.
It removes the friction from transferring payment and titling.
And you guys may ask how do we do that?
Well, we use a third-party identity verification technology to confirm the seller's identity and that's based off of a combination of public records self-provided information or seller provided information and DMV records.
We then verify the ownership of the vehicle Same process.
We partnered with a great company who helps us do this safely.
No information is shared with the buyer and vice versa, and it's been a hit.
You know, when we first launched it a few months ago, we were amazed by how many people adopted it and spoke highly of it and really thanked us for this opportunity and tool.
OK.
So if I want to buy that $16,000, $2,000 Corvette that's red with a black stripe on it, that's you know.
Obviously it's a rest-o-mod of some sort.
How does it work?
Ok, so I cut the guy a $16,000 check, or do I cut you a $16,000 check and you handle it?
No.
So let's look back about a few steps.
You find the vehicle.
You've negotiated with the buyer I'm sorry, the seller on a price.
Both folks shake hands virtually and you agree on a price.
You then have the opportunity to leverage Heming's Pay-in Title, the service the fee is $299, which is split, or can be split, between the buyer and seller.
You agree on that.
Then think of it as an escrow.
Or you're buying a house Via your bank account.
We and our partners hold the money until the vehicle is shipped and in hand to the buyer.
Then we release the funds, you know.
So there's no more trips to the bank, no more silver briefcases full of cash.
So it's a safe and secure way to again eliminate the payment fraud and tiling fraud.
But you know, do all of the guys that put their cars on Heming'scom for sale?
Do all of them agree upfront that if the buyer wants to use this service, then they're going to have to subscribe to that as well?
Yes, yes.
So the butte about Heming'scom and our selling services is you can speak with the buyer and seller throughout the whole process.
So for those who are familiar with our platform, you can comment.
Not everything has to be public.
You can directly message the buyer or seller through the dashboard or through your Heming's account.
So, absolutely, people are either working that out beforehand, during or on the spot.
So what I would do is I would say to the seller of this vehicle that I want to use the Heming's Pay and Title service on this.
It's going to cost $300.
I'll split that with you Exactly.
And then he has to say, okay, that sounds like a fair deal, but that means that that means that the funds are not going to be available, they're not going to go to him, making sure that he's a straight up kind of guy that aren't going to go to him right away until I get the car.
And then once.
I get the car.
I tell him he's, the car is here.
It looks that everything that the car was supposed to be is and that's what I bought and I'm, I'm, I'm good with it.
Yeah, and just think you know, nobody wants a lemon.
You know, jonathan Shaw, our president, says at all time we don't sell lemons, which is why we built these types of programs to eliminate the uncertainty.
You know your audience, you guys on the on the booth right now, may have experienced where you get the vehicle and all of a sudden there's a dent or an unacknowledged scratch.
You know so.
The whole entire Heming's marketplace is meant to be frictionless.
We have tools and programs that do these types of things for you.
So once you get the vehicle, turn the key and you're off Right.
You mentioned the DMV paperwork.
We also help you with that as well.
You know so.
The moment you get the vehicle in your parking lot or a mutual degree upon location, you can turn the keys and head out.
Now you do have to, you know, get to the DMV and get your appropriate license plate after maybe about 30 days.
But that's the beauty.
We want to ignite that experience where you just made a great purchase, you're super excited about it.
You don't have to wait to turn that bad boy on and hit the road.
You can do it right on the spot.
I'm I'm.
I'm reminded of a friend of mine.
A guy I used to work with bought a 67 GTO out in New Jersey dealer.
The guy was a little small dealership up there selling it Told him it had some rust on it sending the pictures Now, I'm talking about 20 years ago and but he told him it runs kind of rough but it'll run well enough to drive it up on the transport and drive it off.
But that was all it was guaranteed.
Anyway, they agreed yeah, and whenever the car got here, the guy drove it off the transport.
He went down there and, sure enough, it barely run enough to get it up on its trailer and all he did he changed the carburetor and it was fine.
But but if, if something happened like that where, okay, it got there, it wasn't what the guy said it was.
And he comes back to you and says, okay, I, I, you're holding the money for everybody, but this isn't what I want.
And how does?
Do you help me ship it back to the guy and get my money back, or are you kind of negotiate a resolution?
How does that work?
Yeah?
So, first off, we have a great customer service staff who is one phone call away.
No, we're not robots.
We're, we're available to help for situations like this.
Now we'll go back towards just our marketplace.
We would have encouraged the seller to disclose that information before listing it with us.
Especially in the options, where we're a little bit more hands-on, we help you set a reserve.
So our customers and our sellers are some of the best in the game, right?
So we would have encouraged that to be disclosed.
Now, no things happen.
It's a phone call to our, our staff in Benton, vermont.
You know we're in the U?
S and we'd find a resolution.
The great part is our, our, our partners at key savvy have handled everything under the sun and we're very lucky to have partnered with them for this product.
We'd find, we find something to to to resolve the issue, right?
I don't want to say this is what we would do.
No, yeah, right, right, absolutely.
But you help resolve it and it sounds like your, your knowledge, your your network, your network, your network, your network, your network, your network, your network of people and things are going to help overcome some of my lack of knowledge or lack of access to do some things.
So that sounds like a good deal there, cause I've always wondered about that who can I get to go check out a car if I want to buy it?
Right, we offer inspection services as well.
You know, again, anything we might talk about we've thought of because we listened to our customer base for months and months and months and, you know, really for 70 years.
Some of you might know, 2024 Hemings is celebrating 70 years of growing and uplifting the collector car community.
So, um, yeah, we're just super pumped about this product and there's future products to to be disclosed at a later date, um, but we're just trying to build a frictionless experience and to uplift the collector car community.
It's a beautiful, beautiful hobby, as you guys know, and we want to make it very turnkey.
One have great um listings available Um be there as your guide no matter where you are in your experience with the hobby, um, and get you on the road as fast as we can.
Like you say, things are going to happen, but it sounds like y'all are trying to make minimize that as much as you can.
Yeah, he started out minimizing them.
Yeah, yeah, yeah I like it.
Do you find that most of your sellers are very open and honest with their description?
Because it's their description that appears on each of the listings and I would imagine that every once in a while there may be somebody that's going oh, wait a minute, it says here a rust-free frame, and then you look underneath the car and it's not rust-free.
Yeah, well, we require a minimum of 88 photos to put on a listing.
Wow, 88.
And we cover 88.
And that's how thorough that we are, because we want our buyers to trust what they're looking at on Hemmingscom.
So yes yes, everything you can think of has happened to us and others.
But because we require 88 photos, our staff in Bennington, vermont helps you build that description.
We're seeing every photo and if we see something that doesn't match up, we'll acknowledge it.
And you say it's not malicious.
You know it might just be an oversight, but we require those photos for that specific reason.
Well, I will tell you that I would trust Hemmings more than anybody else when it comes to buying a car like this.
It's kind of a new way of the old cars for sale magazine that you could pick up at the newsstand when you went in the grocery store, but this is a much more thorough, obviously, way to do it, and with 88 photos.
I don't know how you could hide anything, because we certainly did 88 photos in the Car Buyer's Guide in Houston, Texas.
That's got the you know the 1969 Nova.
That looks great but it's an Earl, Shy paint job and the underside of it's about to fall out on the concrete.
I'd send him 87 selfies and just you know, I had an editor once that wanted 66.
He went 60 pictures of a vehicle if I was sending it in and I thought he was crazy.
But it's less 88.
I've run out of stuff to take pictures of it.
What Mike's saying is you're crazy.
No, but If you send me selfies, I'll put them up on a listing, all right, no, we will not allow that to happen because you don't want that.
But I will tell you that I mean 88 photos.
You have to take pictures of the brakes.
I mean all like Interior shots, yeah, all of the interior stuff, compartment underneath the frame, the framework.
So so when you list a car you have to do, you have a guideline of the pictures that you need.
Oh, absolutely.
No, when you go into Hemmingscom to list your vehicle either in the auction platform or make offer.
There's a how to.
There's even videos showing you vertical versus horizontal.
You know, not everybody's content savvy and we understand that, so we've we've tried to make it as easy as possible to list your vehicle within, you know, two to three days, depending on the magnitude of the vehicle and what product you're using.
You know, what we do find is some of our, our customers who aren't as content savvy.
They call their nephew, their niece.
Hey, hemmings is asking I need 88 photos.
Can you come?
Yeah, sure.
Come take them for me.
Yeah, that's what I'd do.
Yeah.
Yeah Well, brandon, it's great to talk to you.
Thanks so much for the great information.
Brandon Garcia, with Hemmings, and so where can we go to?
Obviously Hemmingscom, but once we get there, where do we go to get more information on all that?
Yeah, absolutely so.
Head to Hemmingscom At our top navigation bar.
You'll see a button called resources, and Hemmings Pay and Title will be right there, along with valuations, inspections, financing and shipping.
Again, everything you need to create a frictionless experience for you is right there on Hemmingscom.
All right, then we're gonna call you on the home phone afterwards and tell you how good it is.
Brandon, thanks so much for joining us.
My friend, you take care of yourself.
Thank you guys.

Jeffrey's got wheels on TV.
Well we talked about.
Well, the gentleman just said that Hemings is turning 70 years old.
The Motor Trend is turning 75 years old.
This is the magazine, not the TV segment, but it's all together.
They're memorializing their legacy.
Motor Trend's digital archive features 75 years of Motor Trend issues, dating back to 1949.
They've been a leader since the inception and the brand continues to be relevant.
By looking toward the future, motor Trend is now part of Warner Brothers Discovery Family and, in addition to having a long-standing print magazine, they have other things on online and subscription services as well, so you can watch your TV shows on Motor Trend TV.
There's other stuff coming up, some new shows, there's some reruns out there, so pick and choose, they're all good for you.
And, by the way, while I'm thinking of it, I want to mention that there were some major, major recalls this week.
There's more and I'm not going to bore you with all of those because they really are boring, but I do want to encourage you, no matter what kind of car you have, to go to safercargov, type in your VIN number and it will come back to you and go yes, you have some open recalls on your particular car or not, but please do that for us, because lots and lots of recalls and some of the ones that we mentioned today aren't up there just yet
because they just came out yesterday, but they're going to be up there.
You need to do that, probably once a month, at least once every quarter for your vehicle, so please do that for us as well.
Ford has halted shipments of 24 model year F-150 lightning electric pickups over an undisclosed quality issue, while shipments of some gasoline powered 2024 F-150s started this week after hundreds, if not thousands, of trucks have piled up on holding lots around Detroit since production began in December.
That's a mess.
Don't know why they're not moving them on the dealer lots, but apparently it ain't all that.
No.
