I'm Aaron. And this is P-Car Talk. All right welcome to another episode of
P-Car Talk. I'm Mike. And I'm Aaron. Been gone for a little bit so consistency is
gonna pump up now like we talked about before rallies are all over we're all
back in town so you know we'll talk about all the rally stuff we'll talk about
in this episode a couple Porsche things and then yeah it'll be fun it'd be good
kind of like working our way back in right yep all right so let's get into it
Target Carolina we'll go in in order Charles Stanley rally I think there are
102 cars at his rally which is a lot of air-cooled still invite only yep and
invite only and it's his number you know and not to compare like the things
like with Josh like Charles's rally is kind of limited on really space because
that little Switzerland that we're maxed out so I'm sure Charles you know if he
could host more cars he would like to not that 102 is not enough they're trying
to give him the course I'm like yeah it's be a little Switzerland to next to
what I'm right I mean we were at even such at a point where Charles was
asking if you were good enough friends like if you could like room together like
meaning like okay what should really in the past I mean I'm not saying it never
happened but it was it is emphasized I guess this time because I think he was
just literally trying to get as many cars in there as possible yeah and he has
routes for it I mean I think there's you know ten different routes okay and again
all different types of you know drivers right like so so many different you know
you got some some spicy groups some you know mild spice you got some like chilling
people but overall really really good rally it always is not trying to dilute
it not get into all the details of it but it was a really good rally weather
was phenomenal we lucked out again you know and what I mean by that is
obviously we're gonna talk about our rally we had good weather there too but
if you guys hear that there's like a macaw outside I know that's really random
but it's probably not being picked up on the mic but it's distracting as hell
yeah anyways Mike Mike has a bird by my proxy neighbor has huge macaws weird but
anyways yeah it was a good rally great roads the 993 performed really really
well it was it was pretty brutal on it actually like went there basically no
rock chips not that you know I'm I'm okay with getting rock chips it's not that
big of a deal that front lip is like sandblasted that's how many how much
gravel there was on the road which is insane I cracked the windshield pretty
good so I fixed it with some resin I'm gonna be fixing it some more was it
like like crack with a line or like just like a crack with a line and then it
started to walk but then now I have one of those like rain next repair kits where
you could so if I filled it with resin after the first night because it happened
on day one and it actually stopped it but it happened in the morning and it
wasn't that cold so wasn't like a temperature change I think it was
actually the body maybe flexing so once it chipped it like it from basically the
morning it went from being like a visual like it went from being like an inch
and a half long to like like it was like a snake it wasn't like a straight line
yeah probably like 12 inches after that like yeah looks like a map on your
like it literally like a racetrack like walk down on the windshield I was like
great like so I need to make sure this thing doesn't get any more mucked up but
car performed really well just some minor stuff like we have rain on the way up so
one of the wiper blades needed to not wiper blades arm I should say like there
was like a connection issue so basically on the 993 they're both on the same side
unlike previous models you know like they're normal like traditional like they
don't bite together like I guess there's like a variation variation gap between
them these like white basically at the same time and there's only like an inch
gap between them that's just how the 993 is almost like a monoblade without being
a monoblade pretty much yeah and they sit really close together too so it was
the top one and basically what happened was is I guess it fell off of the
wiper nut arm or I should say it wore out like whatever the the cottering like
thing it holds it to that nut so the bottom one still working it just kind of
pushed it just pushed it basically once it started going it pushes it out of the
way all the way to the other side and then you just have like one almost like
on your side McLaren blade like over your side like kind of stopping and
wiping but luckily I didn't need it the rest of the rally it was just for like
commuting on the way up did you read did you in visit glass at her yeah I mean
sure yeah it's still like it was just it was shitty conditions on the way up
there like because there was like a storm I think coming through so it was like
misty rain it wasn't like heavy rain it was that just like ugly like spray that
comes up from everybody's car dirty dirt from the road yeah and you can't see
shit you know it's just all over the place but it was like that all the way
in so it's like eight hours of that shit it sucked what tires do you have on the
93 I don't think I've asked it's got some Dunlop's I think that like the
Drozillas or whatever they're like a 300 treadwear so I mean they're new so like
they're not that knock on wood was not an issue we went pretty slow on the way
up I mean we took the back roads we had a couple sketchy situations I'll leave
it at that for a couple drivers and you know won't name them by name but yeah
couple hairy situations and it was all based off of their own faults like just
going a little too quick and hot in the rain and I think everybody being a
little just overzealous like oh we're going to a rally I'm so excited like we
haven't driven all year and it's just like do the road conditions I mean we're
not ideal they're that kind of driving it was more kind of like dude we just need
to commute like just trying to get there yeah so I mean I held back for obvious
reasons but I it wasn't just because of that prior incident that I had earlier
this year it was I always drive like that when yeah in the rain that's our
cars those cars are unforgivable in the rain if and once you lose it you lose it
that's that's my guy's saying anyways if we do we don't do anything before the
rally yeah we don't do thing after the rally yeah during the times it is
specified I mean it's it's it's a weird superstition but I put it back to like
you and I both played sports when we were young it's just like dude when you
it's time to be on the field be on the field like don't go tear your ACL screw
and off on the sidelines like trying to do something you know and be cute like
just stop and I equate that to kind of like driving like there's guys that
they'll they'll drink forever meaning like they'll drink if that fountain will
keep flowing they'll keep drinking it like there is no cutoff there's no
start there's no end there's like none of that stuff again not naming names like
we have them in our rally that Charles has them in his rally there's just
certain guys that are just like hey you know we got back early let's go rip for
three more hours I'm like I'm taking my ass to the bar like I'm I we ran the
miles you're supposed to run I'm done like even though you're a genuine pumped
up at that point you really you might not understand how tired your mind is
and then that also plays a big deal and to like how long a rally is and if you
start getting tired it's the same equivalent of like drinking or anything
else you just you're not gonna be a sharp and you might make one of those yeah
or you know or something happens yeah or your complacency level starts right
because your your fatigue starts in like you made a great point and that's not
discussed at all because everybody just assumes it's like oh we slept last night
but a lot of times like let's be real not everybody's getting a sound night of
sleep for whatever reason maybe you're just not a good sleeper maybe you
partied hard night before or maybe just because you're sleeping in a bed that's
not yours so then you're waking up the next morning probably not batteries
fully charged probably 70 75% max and then what you run those batteries out
all day long meaning your personal like energy battery and then you come back
and you're like hey well there's you know a couple more hours of daylight I'm
gonna go out there now you have I fatigue you have mental fatigue throughout
the whole day that you've already done and then you want you want to go get
more now and then usually those groups are smaller than your normal run groups
so then they turn it up to 11 and then there it's even spicier so you're so if
you look at the almost like if you put it on a whiteboard or if you looked at
this on a graph you're going out at the probably for you the most meaning the
driver the most dangerous time because you're at the most tired you can be
because you're going out after you've already done the rally and you're going
out and turning it up even more so you're basically exponentially creating a
risk that necessarily isn't there but you're compounding the risk with speed
and maybe complacency right and fatigue yeah anyways that's just my equation I
know that's like super analytical but like you and I have always done this and
I carry that to all the air cold rallies I do like I do like if we you know we've
had it before we go to other rallies you know like to ruckus or whatever and we
drive all the way there takes eight hours to get there and then you know say we
get there quick because we didn't run into a lot of traffic and we got there
early and we're some of the hot groups that are there early and we checked in
and everybody's comfortable oh we're good and the weather's good they're like
hey we're gonna go for a rip on the mountain like you want to go with us I'm
like no I was like dude we just we're in the car for eight hours like I do not
want to go get in that car you're no ship to be doing that yeah and and even
though it's not like hard miles that it's still fatigue like you still got to
be focused you still got to be paying attention it's like I feel like when I
you know like a race car you can't you hit that battery kill switch like when
you finally get to where you're supposed to be at like I'm done I'm done like and
I'm not saying there's a right or wrong way to do it but what I am saying is I've
noticed more times than not when people go get that extra shit that's when shit
happens and it's probably circumstantial but there has to be some
correlation there right there has to be again I'm not I'm not doing the R&D I'm
just living the life and seeing it happen and I'm like okay note to self
don't do that yeah Mike's hot takes yeah right anyways I know we were on
Carolina and we spun but it was great car got like minor stuff like obviously
doesn't have airbags in it probably hasn't in a very long time I mean it
left the factory with them but they had a bypass module like that thing failed so
then you know I had to have Corey fix that like you what does that do to it
just to make it just makes that delight come on it doesn't harm anything it's
more of a nuisance like I don't know if I like triggered in a moment like cuz I
know the 93s had like the mobile yeah that's more alarm related yeah I didn't
know if that affected that you know thank God it doesn't but it was more of a
nuisance that happened I lost a damn hood pin on the carbon fiber hood just
because it speed just blew it off price line and you went you yeah it could have
been honestly who knows but you know Corey got that it is a bunch of little
like niggles that needed to be fixed like and not because it was the car's fault
it was the rally was just rough on the car I hit some I wouldn't say
significant but some kind of debris that kicked up on the left bank muffler and
it actually put like a dent in it yeah and then turn the the band that was
holding that muffler and cranked it in like so that had to be fixed like the
band the v-band on it had to be fixed enough for a leak or just no I could see
it this as weird as it sounds like from the rear like it went from like not
visible and then it went from like seeing the band like bent the band was
actually bent and you could see the underside of like basically where the
bands meet each other in that that not that like yeah pinches it down and it
was like I was like that's different like that's new that didn't happen so like
that happened the wiper arm the airbag the hood pins just like little stuff and
then I had him do a post rally kind of like shake down like of the car since
it's still new to me and we did new suspension and brakes and everything I
was like hey is everything just like still tight on the car is everything
loose like what's going on you don't know do you know needed rear toe arm like
links yeah that's one of the things I needed my car yeah and honestly like it
probably the rally was rough enough because he did he did suspension on it
right before we left didn't notice it so did it settle for you at all because I
'm sure you had it at a certain height yeah I mean it didn't really settle at
all like it was already he said it at like pretty much the lowest setting that
it could be set on and it didn't move at all so that's fine but yeah that the
toe arm things the rear toe arms he noticed that like when I asked him so
like of all the you know like the rough rally on it and all those are the only
things that needed to be done and like do you notice tire wear or just they were
just like those parts are gonna lose okay he had it on the rack and he was
moving the tires and I mean I have a video of it it's it's millimeters it's
not big play but like you know he should I told him I was like hey go through the
whole thing and he's like oh yeah there's a little bit of play here so just
replace those like that's a wear item like that just that probably happened
just because they were probably already worn before the rally but then I put the
car through the paces and you know whatever you know that grommet that
holds that in there like that plastic or I should say it's polyurethane that
polyurethane probably just broke down over time because who knows how long
it's been since it was done in there yeah so we just replaced it everything's
all tight and fresh now which is great literally picked it up right before the
podcast and drove it home and then you know the look you lose caught me on the
interstate yeah posted pictures of the first I thought I was like how did Mike
take a picture of himself he's got one of those huge like arms and hangs off
the car like it like you know like taking those things now but overall car
performed really really really well fatigue wise I wasn't like super tired
driving it which is great it's much more quiet compared to the 964 as far as
like even with it being pretty much yeah because those mufflers actually they do
quite a bit I mean it has a great sound to it it's not like but it just it's not
nowhere near as loud in a good way I'm not gonna mess with that I think I'm
gonna just kind of like leave it I think that actually helped with my end-to-day
like not being as fatigued like at least not my ears just being like
tinnitus essentially like dude I don't know what you're saying right now has
been you know on an aircraft carrier deck all day just getting blasted but yeah
then also you know it's it's nice for other people on the rally I guess to
where they're like oh I can actually hear my car yeah not that guy anymore yeah
at least that car I mean then the 997 is stupid loud so yeah you know one way or
another you're getting it I guess at least both cars were getting it giving
it to people before but not as much and you know the air cool crowd can be a
little bit more curmudgeoning I feel like where they're kind of like they're
a little bit older crowd so I get it like you know nobody wants to get blasted
all day everybody's like yeah I mean even our rally James like I don't want to be
behind him it's too loud I didn't think it I mean I've been behind you and I know
it's loud but I don't feel like it's where your cars loud so that's why you
don't think that we both have like loud cars it's like it's not the upload but
like and then guys it basically have and we're around each other all the time
that's the other thing people have cats on their car and then they have you know
an aftermarket muffler car does sound good but even with the valves open it's
not the same so I get it it's it's super loud but I mean there is there is
benefits in that especially up there when you're trying to get somebody to
move out of your way and you if your lead car and you're sitting in high RPM they
they know there's something behind them as opposed to like a quiet car so we'll
say I heard Nick's car open up a little bit more when James test drove it you
don't think they're all that loud but all of them are I mean Todd's 991.2 now it
is shit when he wants it to be like he'll open the valves on that I mean he's
got basically the same thing Olson has okay it's got valves but it's basically
header it's headers valves and their muffler which is basically nothing yeah
so it can be somewhat docile with the valves closed when he's like cruising
home if he wants but if he opens the valves just like Nick like that thing
can eat if they if they want it to I don't have that option I mean I may
switch to a valve thing eventually but I'll have to change my whole exhaust
setup like I was trying to find something that married to that and those those
headers came off an RSR yeah and the exhaust I had already kind of linked to
that because I was trying to do actually the sole performance like valve thing and
it was like you got to buy the whole system if you're gonna do that because
that that back half wouldn't have married to it and it would have been you know
anything can happen like you can modify but that would have just been wonky like
yeah then yeah yeah then if something breaks yeah it just it just wouldn't have
made any sense and at that time I was just like not prepared to like spend that
level of money to do that and I was like man I'm not doing that I'm gonna
surround with these headers and move forward anyways then we went to Lufth
so first time ever Charles had to rearrange his rally unlike ours where we
always run during the week this time his ran during the week how do you like
that that's not something new I liked it I mean I don't think he'll do that
normally I think he really enjoys having it on a weekend I think it's good for
people on the weekend and I guess like I don't think it's good for traffic but I
think it's good for PTO days and I don't think we take that into account as much
yeah I think I agree with you but with that being said it I feel the cost
benefit on that to run it on the weekend as opposed to during the week just
because I've been actually been able to compare it like thankfully with his
rallies because his rallies run on a Friday and Saturday and really his the
only day you're running is that Saturday but shit that's still enough to get that
taste pretty much after Saturday morning I would say and Charles has no control
over it so I'm not trying to be like derogatory or negative about it if we
had one on Saturday be the same way pretty much after lunch it's a wash
you're not doing anything meaning like there's there's pretty much no roads
you're gonna get an opportunity that you're not gonna catch some traffic on
a Saturday up there like now especially with even our rally even though we're
not the same location as him he's jumping off points further north than
ours up in North Carolina from like literally little Switzerland about a
couple hour difference but those so many roads that don't exist anymore up there
and probably won't and the ones they are fixing are super congested still
because they're fixing them with construction exactly so I mean would
it just say about one of the roads I don't figure out I don't remember
exactly which one he goes they're projected to fix that in the end of
2026 right so that's like still another year from now before they start it so
it's kind of like holy crap dude so they have a schedule up there but there's
just so much so much devastation on so many of those damn tarmacs the one
positive I think that'll come out of all of it is pretty much all of the ones
that are still around are gonna get redone redone yeah and that's oh yeah
I know you're talking about now for that road but there's other things too with
that it's like once one road gets done you don't know that it connects to another
road that's also gonna be done so that there's some ruining that could happen
with heavy equipment on some of those and on the flip side of that where they
deem one road good enough and meaning where maybe that road transitions into
that road where they paved and then now that it's other roads still like mediocre
I guess like it went from being like super nice tarmac to like an average
you're like oh man we were cooking we need to slow down now because we're back
on the crap everybody's about to get rattle yeah exactly so we you know we
went over to Lufth which was great Charles set up a thing for Targa like we
had our own like parking area at the parking deck which was literally the
parking deck for the event so I didn't know where that was and it was like a
repurposed like tobacco factory like a really long strike yeah so they good
job on the city of Durham like basically repurposing like that entire area you
can tell they've done it pretty recently that whole area you know they put shops
in and all you know repurpose the buildings it's just I don't know it's a
really cool thing to see something that was so old like not just demoed for the
sake of being demoed giant from the looks of it and I know it probably caught
costs twice as much to do it that way because you know you're like okay well
how are we gonna make sure that the damn smokestacks don't fall on people and
all this other stuff you know it's not functional and decrepit and all that
stuff but they figured it out you know the city did a while ago and it is a
really really I would say perfect East Coast venue because it's got a lot of
East Coast vibes to it you know with the old warehouse and all the like it has
old-school boilers and all this kind of cool like vintagey stuff which is right
up Lufthukult's alley so the settings you know there were multiple warehouses
that had really good lighting and you know they opened them up and they
staged cars there they stage cars on the street you know like just like Jeff and
that whole staff always does like a really really good job staging the cars
and I felt like I saw a lot of people there like a lot of people we know like
we saw p-car club members there like at Lufthukult hanging out that came up to me
and saw me and you know had some conversations with some of them and you
know it was a great great event and I think the East Coast represented really
really well as far as like coming out and showing that there is demand for this
on the East Coast yeah so you know applause to everybody who did end up
going to that and sacrifice their time and you know it's not like oh your
sacrifice it sucked it you know you people wanted to be there so it's it's
still a sacrifice so you got a you know a lot of people traveled to be at that
event this is a lot of people's first time at being at Lufthukult at all yeah
exactly because a lot of people didn't never make that trip to the West Coast to
go see that thing so you know that buzz may be better very beneficial right that
now a lot of new eyes have seen it and like oh cool you know now next year may
be really big so essentially you can look at it like since this is Lufthukult East
one you know usually the one the very first event from size of like I guess
Patrons coming to it usually isn't the biggest yeah so maybe year two is gonna be
insane I don't know but they definitely made a statement for the staff and all
the people who are the lever pullers in that to say okay this wasn't a dud we
can do this again because if it if we didn't represent they'd be like yeah we
guess it just doesn't travel well out here but that's not the case because it
was I mean it was a killer event they did a really really good job you know they
incorporated the baseball part for like the pre-party the one night Charles
hosted a pre-party at a speed local speed shop which was badass you know it
was a very cool old-school warehouse inside too that they displayed a bunch
of cool cars inside and you know he had food and drink inside and you know music
it was just it's just very well done and everything you would expect as opposed
to like and the reason why I'm bringing that up is there's a lot of people that
maybe that aren't on social and they just think that oh I went to I went to
Lufth and I thought it was just Lufth that was it there I didn't realize there
was other things going on always other things yeah you just have to get out and
look and it and all that stuff wasn't private it was basically I think ten
dollars ahead at the store at the door at some of these pre-parties and there
were post parties and that was just to kind of like cover because they were
giving beverages out so there's probably there's probably a big tab and then yeah
it wasn't yeah it was just to kind of like cover offset the cost essentially it
wasn't like you know it's like oh my god there's ten bucks cover to get in here
it's like dude but there's like finger food and there's like drinks and there's
nothing it doesn't one cocktail yeah one cocktail you're yeah you're good exactly
so you know it it's basically probably to cover the food like you said in the
venue and like that those people that were working that event you know they
volunteered to be there so there's that you know so I don't know it's just really
well done and you know I've never been to Durham before it it was you know a
cool place you know I know it's come up a lot you know it hasn't always been like
a sexy place but at least from wherever it used to be can considering where we
saw that it looks like it's on the up and up there's a lot of modern stuff like
down in that area like restaurants and cool things like that so I mean I was
talking to Corey about it today when they were unloading cars because they
displayed some cars and you see like it was really like I guess you could walk
the campus I guess really well like at most loose and I think one of my
favorite things realizing at this loof because it's been a while since we've
been to one I think it was at Indianapolis the last year or two and that
was kind of a pop-up that wasn't like a real loof but it was a loof it was a
weird thing whatever it was but this was I mean no no offense to that city and
like that event itself but this was 10 times better than that and I think it's
they just do even in the California ones I would say the thing it carries
through and it would be obvious to say the way they display them that's clear
but I meant that I think the biggest thing for me that stands out like walking
around is there's a lot of space meaning like you never feel like you're on top
of everybody like there are crowds that gather around certain cars don't get me
wrong but you don't feel overcrowded like the campus itself is huge and you can
walk around and you can see things and you can choose to walk by things or stop
and look at things and you don't ever feel like rushed or there's too many
people around or any of that stuff and I think Luft has always been very good at
that and they pick their venues I'm sure because of that where they're like man
this is too tight of a campus we can't use it you know I already know that they
don't have to be filling up a space every time either because then you got to
be worried about how many cars can we actually get in there that are different
from the time before and all that yeah and they're and they're very selective
about the cars that they want to display right so it's one of those things
where you don't have too much but you also don't want to have too little so
it's a sweet spot you got to figure out what's the right amount of cars what's
the right campus so it is kind of complicated will it be at that same
event I don't know or I mean location I should say I don't think anybody be
upset of Adam if they did because it's a great place but sky's a limit right like
East Coast is a big place right they could go anywhere like they could go a
little further up north like they could go further south like I mean there's
plenty of old school coming to St. B here comes right but I mean you think
about it from an old-school venue standpoint I mean the east is the king
on that most people immigrants came from Europe to the east coast first before
they migrated over to west yeah like New York Chicago even Connecticut all of
that northeast what Boston all of these places I was thinking possibly pretty
cool one yeah but maybe they don't want that though maybe they don't want
something too busy because they don't need any spaceport not only those two
places unless there's well the issue becomes parking it's like the people
coming to the event have to park somewhere and I think they do a great
job of that too like you I didn't get there and be like there's no way to park
like what what do you do with this now that parking was good like that parking
garage held everybody was fine no problem so it's a good event you know
hopefully you know I guess it'd be hard to not do it around the time they did it
it if they do it on a consistent basis like this month it's gonna just make
October just I mean it was already a nightmare don't get me wrong like it's
just way worse now but anyways we were talking about driving during the week
for Charles's event it's great I enjoyed it I don't think that's gonna be his
consistency I think he prefers the weekend but because the Looft event
butted up to that so we drove on Wednesday Thursday checked in on Tuesday at
little Switzerland you know driver meeting and then drove to Durham on
Friday you know and everybody kind of just broke off after that like Airbnb's
hotels whatever and then Looft was Saturday so yeah it was a good event and
then obviously we had our event that just closed up I've been talking a lot
won't you tell me what you liked about our event since you were there it's
always the best guys it was the best if you didn't know this it's always the
best it's the only one that the weather held up nicely like that weather was
like awesome gift I was so good it was warmer than I expected to be we didn't
do hoodies this year so if you were sad that you didn't get a hoodie that's okay
because it was 80 some degrees and then not 80 degrees but I mean honestly like
that's the perfect weather to be honest with you I know it's like wasn't
consistent throughout the day but like cooler in the morning tapering warmth in
the afternoon and then tapering right back right back down once the sun went
down I mean you know it it mean it was one of the nights it was 40 something
yeah it's pretty damn I mean the year before was way cold yeah that's too
that's too that's too cold because then that's too bad for the tires like
there's there's a balance like I feel like the weather temps because it came
up pretty quick for the morning in a good way I mean it wasn't like 80 it was
still in the 60s the low 70s in the morning and like that's like perfect for
driving I think that we ended up having a smaller group we didn't fill out the
lodge like we wanted to this year at the end at the end coming up to the last
minute but I've had a lot of feedback where people like that they got to talk
to more people yeah I think we were able to have yeah I mean with that size that
we were able to have like long tables and so that that's gonna curate more
often some some conversations we did have some new people they all did well
nothing they were all awesome right like all of the newcomers right vibe you
know good drivers wanted to be there you know what wasn't one of those
situations where they got there and was like whoa this is nothing I expected you
know as as we always do people are like wow this is actually so cool and I can't
believe I haven't come before well the marriage came together as pretty nice
did bags this year which is now I'm gonna probably change it up next year I'm
gonna make them I'm gonna do any buffets next year yeah I think that's the way
to go I think people enjoyed that that's what we did for the breakfast and yeah
that was a big difference I don't know if you don't think you've I don't know
we've done that before for far I enjoyed it but the plated breakfast is way
different well I I just enjoy it because I'm not a big breakfast person you can
pick what you I just like bacon and toast yeah no coffee yeah nothing no
nothing wild in there while I'm driving like I don't want some alien to get
pissed off at me while I'm like in the middle of the woods I'm like dude I got
a code brown now like pull over immediately where's one of those
construction sites yeah I got brown snake brown snake yeah I like that thing
we had some new roads same leaders we always have because that's just that's
gonna be staple yeah I mean that's again not to get into the details I mean if
you've been on a rally you know how that works like we we get pilots that's just
how it works man like that's that's one thing it makes us different I think I'm
gonna I think I think this next one I think I'm gonna try to do almost a
triple stay what I know if we're gonna I think we're only gonna do two days that's
nothing do I think I don't know how you've about three days in a row but I
know I was tired yeah it was it is a lot of it's a lot it's not even just the
driving it's just the waking up every day like again there's always gonna be
people that want more and we tried it and it only like I'm not saying it in a
negative way you we got to try stuff right like so we wanted to try that I
wouldn't say it wasn't successful I would just say that some people felt that
it was a little much which is understandable to each their own right
like and then there were a group of people that were like yeah blood thirsty
right like one and more one and more like oh hey three days of driving we're
leaving they're like we're staying for two more days and and also driving for
the next two more days I'm like you go for a brother like that type of stuff
like that and we love that you know when hosting these things brings those
people together so we got to find that middle ground and I think going back to
two days is that middle ground right now and I think for everybody I think
mentally too and taking the time away from loved ones and to do your your
thing you know if your loved one isn't one that enjoys that you know there's
some that are sure yeah so they there are people going to this that are doing
this for them so I get that you know to be a be a way for a significant duration
week kind of puts kind of puts a little bit of strain on the relationship or
they're kind of like really you're gonna go with the boys and go drive for the
next four days in the mountains and it's like yeah I am but I think get a
little bit less and hot water you know with a little bit shorter time and it
and it's not like we're shortening to something that we're not accustomed to
that's what it normally was we're just going back to there yeah we're just
going back to that way is and I just think it'll be better for everybody I
think it's better for scheduling for everyone as well like where they can say
hey and then also pricing right like that changes the pricing a little bit
because it did go up some but it was directly reflecting on the days of
staying there like so basically if you broke them up into the days like that's
that's what it was it was more expensive because we stayed an entire day like so
there was more food that had to be purchased there had to be more
lodging it had to be purchased like so all of that stuff goes together and we've
been covering and we've done I think I like to bring myself we've done a good
job on the alcohol stuff to you I mean normally we're gonna be responsible
tell you two drinks but if it if it goes a little bit over that that's I think the
way you do it is perfect with the giving people the drink tabs and like
basically have to do it that way I did it I did another day other event without
them why no yeah it's well it gets out of hand because that because then you
don't realize I mean it's two-fold right so they know it's accountability on
their part and your part one because now I know like oh great I know how many
drinks you've had at least yeah but also like that barrier sets up a
situation where it's not really holding somebody back but it it is to the degree
of like they're going through the steps themselves being like this is my fourth
drink dude that's not a bit you know as opposed to be like sitting on the couch
and like the waitress walk I don't know it's like I'll have another one and you
know to be fair the people that work there that's their job if you're out of a
drink they're gonna ask you and they know it's all on one tab meaning like the
house does so they're just like dude that guy had eight bourbons over there so
it's like dude that guy had eight bourbons like what so like you're right it
does it can it can slip away real fast because if you're if you're putting them
down and there's no roadblock for you to get your drink meaning like oh you got
to go hand somebody take it or you got to go fetch it or whatever you have to do
it just makes that there's no filter now so I think that part's really done
really well with that like what's your opinion on no words and just raffles I
like that I think that's smooth I think I don't I don't know that awards really I
I mean I think some people kind of like it I think it was like it's more old
school like to do it with the awards I I like it that it's more random with the
giveaway stuff to be honest with you and that way I'm speaking from a selfish
standpoint where we don't have to sit there and like come up with an award but
at the same time who wants to receive that award to like just because we came
up with it yeah that seems cool well the thing about it is is then it gets into
like a dicey situation right it's like oh are they just picking their friends
because we all have friends that are there that were closer to like ever we're
friends with everybody it's there but it's we're closer to some people and
it's then we got to be like all right well we can't pick him because he wants
you know it just gets into one of those weird things where it's like well we
don't want everybody think that we picked him because like we're tight with
them so the way we're doing it now I think it's probably the way we should
just do it moving forward you know the one though I would say the only bad
thing about that will be just that you know somebody may get something super
cool and it just will be super random but that's just how it is right that's
exactly how it is there's just we couldn't have called that Tom collects
yeah models and then he got one so yeah that worked out well I think I think Todd
had his poster frame before Nick but I think it was really close that was a
pretty that was a pretty tight race right like it's like oh like Todd's gonna
send you a picture of his was like well mine's already hanging up in the garage
look at this it's like all right geez guys don't have to race everywhere but
no always a great event always a great like place they always take really
really good care of us super cool that you guys had them have make that sign
yeah they're making it they're making it for other people too now I saw that well
they have a general one now though it's just Porsche I saw it doesn't actually
say anything else it actually has our thing on it which is cool yeah so but
see that's great thing is they just roll those up and roll them out next year for
us right they don't have to like buy them again you're like hey shouldn't have to
charge me the same amount you charge I'm sure it's wrapped in there somewhere
yeah they're like oh no you're we get you new ones every year like what are you
doing with the old ones I'm sure we should have just taken it with us well
they I know they're keeping them because those are pretty durable those are like
what they were up for three days like they didn't get damaged there was no
weather while we're here they're they're perfect but it's good for the host to do
that I thought it was very clever I actually saw that on 129 coming in so
I was like I saw that as and the reason why I saw this because we got stuck
behind some like trikes so like we're slow down yeah Todd and I are peddling
around like on our way in and didn't really get to cook but we I if we were
cooking I probably want to saw that sign though but so I got to see that so
that was actually nice but yeah Topoko always takes care of us it's such a good
venue there's just so many I don't know like good reasons to be there and I
won't go through the entire list and I'm sure people have stayed there in the
past and if you haven't stayed there in the past just look it up how much it is
to stay there that's all I'll say because just in case you're curious you're
just like when you come to our event they're like why is it cost so much for
lodging because it costs so much like $4 to $600 a night that's how that's what
it is there if you didn't know that so what a lot of people do and I'm not
judging they go there and have like a drink and have like lunch or they'll
have dinner and then they go stay at lesser places in the area that you're
not there and I'm not saying they're necessarily rally people I'm just saying
like either motorcycle groups or whatever like places to stay it's just
that I think for the money that they get seemed to keep putting in and
restoring everything there and then I don't really think there's any other
places that are have restaurants on property with the variety that they do
because they have their taverns but they have dinners and yeah they knew what
they were doing it's a good venue like it has a lot of options and you know
staying there and having that as home base is like huge because you get to see
a lot of stuff to even like indirectly like there's like a lot of groups of
cars coming in and you get to see him and you're like oh wow look at that that's
an especially I like oh my god look at that that's a AMR or whatever so it's
good people watching to or I should say car watching essentially but yeah let's
just talk about now that we've discussed that let's just talk about rallies in
general like we've noticed and I'm sure other people have noticed whether you're
frequent themming or not they're probably getting inundated with them on
advertisement wise there's tons and tons of rallies that have come up right and
there's some that have been around some haven't been around and I think finally
with social media and maybe word and conjunction with word of mouth because
people that maybe come up there on there on their own time or come to a rally
and they don't know somebody and they meet people or whatever and then they
bring other people with them you know whether the rally they end up going to
whether that's Porsche an exotic rally or whatever they decide to go they're
like holy crap dude like this was so fun we should do this and I went and then
they bring some more friends next year right no point of bringing this up is
that whole area is so freaking congested now during basically the month of
October probably leading into November as well because there's some rallies for
there and I think they even start some of them even start in September so if
you're not going to a rally and you're going up there just be mindful that you're
gonna see a lot of traffic and you're gonna see a lot of I don't know a lot of
stuff I'll just put it that way I don't want to get into like the details of what
that stuff is yeah and probably gonna see some people driving with bad habits
right like yeah I mean that I think too when you're thinking about things kind
of chase or watch a leaf season because that's also yeah something that's I
think that's what creates created a lot of traffic this year yeah it was cold
earlier and then there was no leaves returning even earlier than they did
first last time even though it was warm and again a condensed assortment of
roads to drive on that yeah yeah so that that I mean everybody sharing those
yeah we can't we can't make that goes for the people living there right like
those poor people that live there are probably like this we hate this time of
the year yeah but they live up there you use the turnout brother that's why it's
there do you see the bluff yeah use it but yeah I guess I bring that up because
I feel like there's been a lot that have sprouted I mean like we're by no means
the originator of being up there like this is what you're six for us one of
those not necessarily at Topoko but like in that region in the region I think I
think Josh has his beat by he started 18 yeah so a couple years but still I mean
that's we had to be some of the fur that seem to be us I mean there's been a
couple that have come and gone right like there's used to be there used to be
Appalachian adventures like that you could go like fly in rent a 3rs from
them and they would take you driving in it that used to be a thing like that I
think post COVID that didn't survive which is odd though because that's when
all the driving really started up that way is is COVID timeframe and post COVID
business models ran yeah I mean I'm sure they were probably just doing it to
write those cars off but anyways yeah we were coming down the mountain on
Friday Todd and I heading back to Milton area and we saw Charles Stanley and
that whole air-cooled group from overcrest literally passed them on the
way down 129 yeah he was leading a group and there was a group of air-cooled and
he saw so we haunted them and like they were heading up that morning and it was
like they were basically driving into the hurricane cars like up there and it
was like holy shit dude you guys have no idea what shit shows that you guys are
about to get into up there and I'm sure there was plenty of traffic but you know
they probably got some shots they probably did they probably didn't go on
all of the same roads as maybe the big power cars like they probably went on
some smaller roads where they those air-cooled were probably more fit for
but it was cool seeing them and I'm sure they still had a good time you know in
the overcrest fashion they like the kind of like oh hey there's some dirt roads
here that we can break a wheel or something on that'll be fun right guys
who's gonna do it like let's play Russian roulette oh the 325 I from you
know 1976 broke a hub cool let's anybody want to help him fix it no you know like
that kind of stuff and again I'm not trying to be a dick I'm just saying
like I know there's some people that are into that like more adventure style as
opposed to like really like ripping I know I would say we kind of do a blend
of it you know like there's some really tight technical roads and then then we
use some big sweepers too so I think we do a pretty good blend and I could say
it from owning a classic and a more modern classic you know not all those
roads are cut out for a GT3 and not all those roads are cut out for an air
cold but you just fight your way through it no matter what you're in right like
well that's when you start figuring out to like you think you know how your car
drives until you get started in some elevation or elevation and up you know
or or a hard 90 or yeah things like that and that's really okay maybe that
wasn't assorted or as maybe it is planted but like no when I'm going that
quick mm-hmm yeah you know like you get to really learn the car that's
something all camber at speed like decreasing radius left scary shit right
yeah those lines in the road they keep getting smaller you're like why is there
a bump there oh because of road needs to be repaved that bumps trying to send you
off the mountain but yeah like every year I mean I think it's such a great
rally and obviously we're biased we host it but if you're ever interested in
going I don't think we we pitch it as much as other places pitch it I mean we
definitely don't take out any digital like marketing been paid to do that it's
basically word of mouth which is good though because it's it's 30 cars so we
keep it intimate that way and like I said Charles is 102 Josh just had one at
280 280 cars yeah I mean again I'm not knocking anybody for the quantity of
the rally so but that has nothing to do with the the quality I guess you could
still get good quality out of it I'm not I'm not hating but I know the people
that come to our rallies prefer an intimate group and I think because we've
kept it always small we have found those people that enjoy that and I think it's
just gonna stay that way because that's just how we operate like we'd rather be
tight with everybody it's there I feel like everybody polices each other a
little bit better there's tighter relationships develop from this I mean
again we've talked about it in the past there's been people that used to come
that have sprung off and started their own podcast they're still buddies you
know they wife swap whatever they end up doing on the side you know I'm joking
but you're fresh yeah you know hey man dude it's so good to meet you we can share
wives now this is we can share cars and wives this is such a good event like you
know it's things spiral hey whatever happens in the cabin brother like we
don't really get into it right but yeah I mean there's all types of
relationships that have like spawned and good friendships that and at the core
of what we originally started even peak hard talk and the membership of peak
hard talk and all of those things that's the whole reason why we did all the
stuff you know when we used to go to a lot of events and do all that stuff it
is for the core of like people meeting each other and hanging out and you know
listening to us and then us being that voice for everybody essentially or the
ones who want to be listened to I guess or you know the sounding board for that
and I think it'll always be that like it as much as that you and I you know
offline have fantasized about oh man how cool would it be if we had like a
hundred cars how cool would it be but honestly like I don't think it'll be cool
I think you and I like behind closed doors would be like why the f did we do
this like dude like the other cars comes like I'm like dude they're like
gremlins they're like everywhere like literally everywhere so yeah I think we
fit in great at that Topoko with our 30 and they love us there and they know us
and it's just like smooth transition right like we don't have to go somewhere
and oh oh we didn't realize you guys were coming you know like that kind of
crap we've encountered that that's why I bring that up you know it's like you
know you do something like that and and honestly you spread that many 280 cars
out like you're gonna get a lot of that you're gonna get a lot of and whether
you like it or not it's harder to police that many people right if you got 280
cars and somebody's got your rally sticker on their car and they're the
one jackass the one even you had 279 people that were perfect you got one
car it's doing that every person will remember that meaning like not yet
necessarily in the rally I'm talking about outside of the rally they're like
yeah you're that you guys are those guys that he ran somebody off the road or
whatever and it's like dude we're not all that way and they're like we don't give a
shit you know like type of stuff you know me labeled like those dance boys in
Gatlinburg yeah that thing squashed right yeah but anyways I mean the really
really great rally slash loop season it always is oh one thing to bring up we
allow air cool it's in our thing like I don't know if that's brought up enough
but like we're not just water cool yeah that's a good that was our those part
everything when we got together I mean Casey last year drove a freaking not
this season but the season before he drove a cayenne turbo because his car
was like a little mucked up man I don't recommend it but if that's what you have
that's what you have you could still come you probably have more fun in a
con than you would in a car I think I do I'm actually surprised we haven't seen
somebody in like a McCann turbo or GTS show up in one of those things because
those things get it man I shut it down's why no you said nope but we have all
types and you know we've got what turbo turbo s's that show up we've got any
cars we've got paint samples yeah I mean we've had 996's in the past we've had
964's multiple 964's in the past Ben brought his before yeah just all types
that's a good point like I think indirectly in I don't want it to be this
way but it just happens to be this way like people who go there and if they
bring some type of other iron to bring like and not that that anyone else's
cars that aren't are not worthy I don't know what like we've seen it happen
multiple times like somebody goes out and gets like a GT3 the very next year
and it's like dude you don't have to buy a GT3 to like come to this thing like
your car you brought last year is just as good as like no but I you know running
with you guys I saw what they can do and like I'm not I'm tired of getting like
left like I don't like that or whatever yeah but necessarily you don't have to
have even it's it's all about driver thing it has nothing to do with the car
because prime example he knows he who he is I don't think he listens to the show
but he definitely comes every year like he's brought a Carrera T up there before
many times in the past and he drives the wheels off that car he runs in the
number like two slot and no one drives away from him and he in that car is bone
stock like no no kidding like no aftermarket no tune and he's running
that car no problem and at pace cup to this is about the other thing yeah like
tires tires and brakes really you know maybe upgraded pads I think I think you
still run in stock rotors but yeah so the point of me bringing that up is you
can be up there in anything it's up to the driver really if there's plenty of
guys that have a lot more skill set than all of us that can get it done in a lot
less horsepower cars like it you don't need a GT3 to do that stuff I mean you
really don't ask about Chad GT4 and that was six me on it that was on him he was
like he was talking to the guy he pulled over was eating him alive he's like what
do you do is like well yeah I used to race professionally for 20 years oh there's
that yeah and that guy probably loves oh being up there no momentum every GT car
alive that he can or any you know zero six or whatever you name it cuz a lot
of those that's that's what that's what's gonna define you as a driver is that
curve those curves and stuff and then being able to figure that out and you
don't realize that until you get up there you're like oh yeah this is
different well I was for us place for Florida boys yeah well I mean honestly
even if you lived up there I mean Chad lives up there now you don't we all
have said this before and people that have been up there know this like you
don't need 500 horsepower a lot of the times you can't use use it no I mean now
Cherahala Skyway yeah you're definitely gonna use it like foothills you're
probably gonna use it which window so Cherahala and foothills which one do you
prefer oh yeah I just I've driven that so many much more not that I don't like
the foothills I just in our drives and the way we go to the places we end up
going yeah Cherahala's just always on that list and honestly I don't know I
just I really really like it because generally speaking even though people are
using it it seems like more often as a commuter route it's not that it doesn't
commute to anywhere yeah like you have to go you have to go to it yeah and it
doesn't really take you anywhere like like a place of work meaning like you
wouldn't live on essentially somewhere and use that road to go to where you work
at like very few people it's it's basically was built for scenery like
there's a million if you've never been there there's a million turnouts and
scenic overlooks so it was clearly built for that reason
unfortunately it's just getting busier and busier but I don't know I remember
it's it's because it's two roads into one it's a connection I forgot what
Josh was telling me about it but yeah yeah but I mean it's essentially 40
something miles of just awesome tarmac you know and I think it's the Tennessee
side it's a little bit less manicured than the North Carolina side I believe yeah
I think that's right that sounds because the minute you come out of iron works
that's and it's not that the road's bad it's just way more gravelly and then you
know immediately when you get into the North Carolina side because all of that
shit goes away and then like all of it opens up and all of it's like holy shit
we're driving at a rest me speed obviously closed road though
going off yeah but yeah that's my favorite road by far and even in the
air-cooled you know I wouldn't I wouldn't dare to say I've driven it in the
964 and I'll tell you what it's a handful for the car not really necessary
how does that feel in the 964 compared to the GT3 is it feel just as planned or
is it feel like it was planted what it doesn't what you where you start to
realize where I was like oh you don't really need power you start to realize
that you you have to stay in the rpm bit like you will be punished there more
than anywhere for not staying in the rpm in an air-cooled because you don't have
a lot of power or or torque to begin with and if you you know miss shift or
think you can carry something at you know I can carry it you know third gear
here when you should have went to second you're gonna feel it right away that's
the biggest thing I noticed I think when we did the air-cooled run on that thing
and man that thing is rough on air-cooled brakes because I feel like you have to
carry a lot of speed in the air-cooled but you're also using a way more brakes
than I would in like essentially the GT3 like the GT3 I'm using a lot more
modulation with gas pedal and engine braking because it's a higher horsepower
car and has higher torque numbers I feel like even you would think in a oh a
lighter car you know should be the same right well I'm speaking from the 964
standpoint like that car probably weighed like my car what before it was
gone was like around 2,900 car was maybe like 300 horsepower so my GT3 weighs
like 2,950 and has like 450 horsepower and has way more torque so that that's
the huge difference there's it's a power road yeah an arrow and stuff too so
there's a difference in feel so it's kind of one of those things where yeah
you can carry speed but even like the G's on those cars like it can't carry the
same kind of g-force that that GT3 can carry it just doesn't it can't like the
contact patch just isn't there too you got to think about all of the things the
factors that go into that your your tread pattern is smaller I mean it's a
smaller footprint of a car but if you're doing weight for weight I mean damn
that 964 weighs the same much is that 997 GT3 and I got twice the tire on the
front and the rear and way more power so yeah that car is gonna do much better
on that road anyways when we stopped on the last pull-off at the end of
Cherahala there's that one on the left before you come off the mountain and
we stopped there in every single one of our brakes it was Sean Todd myself and
I think Chris Brady like our brakes and I'm not exaggerating literal like
freaking smoke it wasn't steam because it was still kind of warm because it was
spring it was smoke coming out of there it was like you know honestly if there
was a little bit more temperature I can't speak for the other guys but mine
they might have caught on fire like sitting there probably should have done
I didn't know they were that hot until we parked I mean you could smell them a
little bit but they weren't like so bad it's like oh my god all the smells
brakes probably should have ran a cool down lap you know after we back up yeah
right just like cruising and then they have a minivan honking at me
my brakes are hot I was like hey I'm doing a cool down lap
but no so great great rally season all right let's bring up one more thing and
then we'll we'll close the show sure so Porsche is gonna be out of WEC racing
next year they made that announcement a few weeks ago it's gonna stay in Emsa
which is great we'll still get to see that car don't want to speculate but it
seems like they're finding ways to cut as much money everywhere they can because
of the suspected and projected losses from the EV fallout I mean we'll get into
it in another episode I don't want to spoil that part but obviously like you
know new CEO etc etc at least they're staying in like I said Emsa so we'll
still get that what are your thoughts on them pulling out of WEC you you think
that it's money driven or do you think they're just kind of like whatever dude
like we're just done we're done supporting two fronts essentially for my
first funny thought was like I guess well I guess someone's gonna pay for that
Audi F1 program we're all in the Volkswagen group together yeah I guess
you know I thinking about it it is kind of a weird perspective to have two
separate nine six three teams yeah and I don't know and our US one can still go
to the mall right I don't know that it can't if it get if it enters in because
it's got I know they have to be in some type of so my understanding was I think
that they could but I thought they had to win petite the mall in order to be
eligible and they didn't win it this year so I think I know that that's a
criteria and I think it's it's not the only but I think it's one of the ways
that they can get in because then there's like you know that's like a sister
race for them it they may already be in because they want another race like I
didn't look into that but I just remember watching petite and one of the
announcers said that so like so he was like if Porsche wins this they'll be
invited to Le Mans so they they really want to win this so in that announcement
had already came and they're like since they're especially out of whack next
year it's almost like the same thing as a golfer winning the Masters but like
not qualifying for other tournaments and it's like dude you won the Masters you
can always play the Masters like it's almost kind of like those things where
they get that invite I mean I think it's kind of it's just about time I guess
they weren't dominating dominating on the series so it kind of makes sense from
that perspective and less and they always have the cup series that they do
and there's several different customer support teams that they have to do from
Asia to the UK to Germany to all that it's probably a big burden as well yeah
that's a lot of moving parts I'm sure it's like super expensive right just to
to literally fly that car all in that team all over the world to multiple hours
yeah and they still have Jota and everybody else yeah so again just like
we saw them pull out a RSR and support a customer racing team if they'll still
combine 9-6-3s and support it with the customer perspective it's it's just
that much cheaper because they make money doing that right because now the
customers are paying for those cars so that's that's the versus them yeah it's
an incoming company now going yeah company money will it be faster that's a
good question like well Jota start showing some speed or whoever decides to do
it yeah I just I'm a little bummed in the sense of like I guess the other
manufacturers didn't step up fast enough I guess because there's still other ones
still like come oh we're gonna come to the game and it's I guess from a fans
perspective I'm upset in the sense of and it's totally selfish but I was hoping
to see a field and then we were being sold that to be fair yeah by all of the
race like you know obviously WEC and M so we're selling that stuff to us to like
oh this field's gonna be sick all of these manufacturers are gonna be in it
and it's it was kind of half-hearted because now Porsche's out of it and yeah
Ferrari is very selective of what they decided they were in it but they're
like oh we're gonna run like seabring we're gonna run basically Daytona and
then we're only running in WEC without those are the only two US races will run
you know and stuff like that and I get it everybody's allowed to do their own
thing it but I'm just saying from a fans perspective I was hoping to see like
Lambo Ferrari Porsche Bugatti like you said Pujo all of these people like duke
it out on the highest you know road road racing level and it seems like all of
those chips have kind of just fallen between the cracks like that's not gonna
happen for one reason or another right what somebody didn't get in when they
said they were gonna get in or do what they were gonna do and then Porsche is
already out essentially yeah we've been here for a few years yeah where's the
rest of you guys basically that's what they're saying they what happened the
rest of you guys you you made a verbal commitment but you never showed up but I
am thankful we go to Daytona we go to seabring we're gonna see them in the
US at least and we'll still be able to follow them so I'm thankful for that who
knows how much longer that program will run and I'm sure Roger was tired of
driving off or I say driving being flown all over the world you know he's not
some spring chicken like that's a pain in the dick too to be like oh I'm we're
in friggin Japan now like now we're in Italy it's like oh hey we got Petit
Lamar I gotta fly back for that it's like I mean that's a lot and the old dude
man yeah it's true I mean we're not we're half his age and we don't even want to go
to California but um yeah it's kind of a bummer but you know new GT3 ours coming
out or has come out I should say and you know I'll save it because I was gonna go
down the man type half I'll save it for another episode on the next episode but
I don't anything else for him I think that's the the highlight reel like I said
