The Renault 4 CV is an older, classic Renault car model. The podcast is talking about it in the context of an open-top “canvas” version, which changes how the cabin feels and looks. It’s mentioned because it’s a recognizable classic reference.
ICE2EV is shorthand for converting from an internal-combustion vehicle (ICE) to an electric vehicle (EV). In this episode, it’s used to describe the government scrappage scheme’s goal: replacing older gas/diesel cars with EVs.
A scrappage scheme is a government program that pays you (or helps you) to trade in an older car. The idea is to get you into a newer, cleaner vehicle—here, an EV.
“E-Tech” here means it’s an electric Renault 4. They’re describing it as a soft-top version that brings back the old Renault 4 vibe, but with modern electrification.
The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is an electric car based on the Renault 5 name. The podcast is talking about it in the context of an open-top style, where you can feel more open-air driving. It’s mentioned because it connects an EV with a more playful, airy experience.
The Renault Wind is a small convertible, so you can drive with the top down. The podcast is describing the experience—more open air and more light inside the cabin. It’s mentioned because it’s known for that kind of driving feel.
A soft top is the “convertible roof” made from fabric instead of hard metal. It’s what lets the car open up to the sky, but it also has to be engineered to fold and store properly.
Targa is a “partly open” roof style—usually the middle opens up, but the car keeps some roof structure for support. It’s different from a full convertible where the entire roof goes away.
The drag coefficient is a number that describes how “slippery” a car is through the air. A higher number means more air resistance, which can reduce efficiency and range a bit.
Term
CDA of 0.762
“CDA” is being used like a drag number for how much air resistance the car has. They’re comparing two drag numbers to show the open roof changes aerodynamics.
WLTP range is a standardized test number for how far an EV can go on a full charge. It’s useful for comparing cars, but your real-world range can be different depending on driving and weather.
Term
electronically controlled
It means the roof isn’t moved by hand. The car uses motors and sensors to control the roof automatically.
An automatic deflector is a device that deploys to redirect airflow when the roof is down. In this case, it pops up to help reduce wind buffeting and improve comfort at higher speeds with the roof open.
The Volkswagen Golf is a small car with a hatchback body, meaning the rear opens upward. It’s popular because it’s practical for everyday driving. The podcast mentions it because the car being discussed looks similar in size and shape.
The Kia EV6 is an electric car in the crossover category, meaning it’s built for everyday driving with a higher seating position. The podcast mentions it because the front of another car looks similar to the EV6. It’s mainly a design comparison.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a small hatchback, meaning it’s designed for daily driving and has a rear door that lifts up. The podcast mentions it because the back of another car looks similar to the A-Class. It’s mainly about matching the look and shape.
Level 2 ADAS means the car can help with driving tasks like steering and speeding up or slowing down, but you still have to watch the road and be ready to take over. It’s more than basic cruise control, but it’s not fully self-driving.
The Ford F-150 Lightning is an electric pickup truck. The podcast mentions it because of the available paint colors, including a bright “Lightning Yellow.” It’s a truck you’d consider if you want an EV but still need a pickup.
The Alpina B10 is a sporty, higher-performance version of a larger sedan. The podcast mentions it because it uses the same underlying platform as another car, and that platform is said to provide good legroom. It’s brought up to help explain how much space you can expect inside.
Car
Leap Motor B05
The Leap Motor B05 is an electric car (a hatchback). It comes with different battery sizes and is designed to be practical day-to-day, including a usable trunk space. They also mention how fast it can charge and the amount of driver-assistance tech it includes.
The Leap Motor B10 is mentioned because it uses the same basic design platform as the B05. That often means the cars are built on similar foundations, which can help with space and overall design consistency.
This is how fast the car can charge. AC charging (often at home) is slower at 11 kW, while DC fast charging (at fast chargers) is much faster at 175 kW. Faster DC charging usually means you can add range in less time.
The boot is the car’s trunk space. “345 litres” is the amount of room they claim you can fit in there, which helps you judge how practical the car will be for trips and daily use.
The Chevrolet C10 is a pickup truck model from Chevrolet’s older C-series. It’s known for its classic truck design and is often talked about by people who like traditional pickups. The podcast mentions it as part of a set of vehicles being discussed.
A range extender setup is basically an electric car that can use a small engine to generate electricity when the battery is running low. It’s meant to help you go farther without needing to charge as often.
Here, “autonomy” just means how far the electric car can drive on one full charge. The hosts are saying the range is close to 500 kilometers, which helps people feel less worried about running out of battery.
Car
B03X
B03X is described as an upcoming Leapmotor model aimed at the B-segment, with a focus on city use. The hosts say it will be ready for dealerships between September and October in Ireland, and that it will be available very beginning of next year.
“B segment” is a category for smaller cars, often the kind you’d use in cities. The hosts are saying these new models are aimed at that small-car market.
“H-back” here means a hatchback-style car—one with a rear door that opens upward and usually folds cargo space into the cabin area. They’re saying this body style helps fit the smaller, city-focused B-segment.
Range anxiety is the worry that your electric car won’t have enough battery to finish your trip. The hosts say the car’s long range helps reduce that fear.
Fast charge capability means how quickly the car can recharge at a fast charger. They say it can charge from 30% to 80% in under 17 minutes, which is designed to make charging feel practical.
Software tuning means adjusting the car’s control software—such as how the powertrain, traction, and driving behavior respond. The host contrasts it with physical changes like suspension, arguing that the European-spec B05 includes both software and hardware work.
Place
Baloco
Balocco is where the engineers worked on the car. The implication is that it’s a proper development/testing location, not just remote software work.
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is how much energy the EV’s battery can store. Bigger kWh usually means the car can go farther, but your actual range still depends on how you drive and the weather.
“Ventilated” seats have built-in fans that blow air through the seat cushions to help cool you down. “Heated” seats warm the cabin, and “massage” functions use small actuators to create vibration patterns—features that are common in higher-end luxury vehicles.
The Cadillac LYRIQ is an all-electric Cadillac SUV. The host is talking about how much it costs in different markets and pointing out some of the comfort/tech features inside.
Term
push drive
“Push drive” sounds like a way the car drives when you press the accelerator or select a driving mode. The host is basically saying the car feels good and controlled when you drive it.
Bank of Ireland is the Irish bank involved in this EV marketplace. In the episode, they’re described as helping people research EVs and potentially finance them through the platform.
Neville is the partner brand behind the EV marketplace experience mentioned in the episode. The host says it helps people research and compare electric cars, alongside Bank of Ireland.
An “EV marketplace” is a website that helps you look at electric cars and compare them. It can also guide you toward financing and next steps so buying an EV is easier.
Personal contract plan (PCP) is a way to finance a car with monthly payments. At the end, you usually choose to pay a final amount to keep the car, or hand it back and walk away (depending on the deal).
The BYD Dolphin is an electric small car that’s aimed at being affordable but still usable day-to-day. Here they focus on the battery size (30 kWh), a BYD Blade battery, and a screen you can rotate for easier viewing.
A BYD Blade battery is BYD’s type of electric-car battery. It’s designed to be safer and long-lasting, and it’s used in some of BYD’s more affordable EVs.
Car
Leapmotor T03
The Leapmotor T03 is a small electric car meant for city driving. The host brings it up as another low-cost EV option to consider alongside the BYD Dolphin.
The T3 mentioned here is the Leap Motor T03. The podcast is comparing it to another option that has a similar price and similar feature focus. It’s brought up to help you understand what you might pay versus what you get.
The Citroën ë-C3 is a budget-friendly electric car. They mention it seats five people and has a stated 200 km range, and they compare its price after the government grant.
The Nissan Frontier is a pickup truck, which is a vehicle with an open cargo bed in the back. The podcast is talking about a version with a standard-range battery and comfort features. That matters if you want a truck that’s still comfortable for daily driving.
The MG4 Urban is an electric hatchback meant to be a good-value choice. The host says it shares the same underlying platform as the Citroën ë-C3 and gives a price-after-grant and range figure to compare it with other EVs.
LIVE
Welcome back to the Nevo EV News podcast. If it's Tuesday, it must be Nevo EV Newsday.
On this week's episode, we're going to be in Barcelona driving the Renault 4 plan suit,
which is their canvas top Renault 4, something different. The following day we flew to Frankfurt
in Germany and had a drive around the Leap Motor B05. And we also got to interview one of the
executives from Leap Motor in Europe. On the channel recently, we've put out the Cadillac
Lyric Large Electric SUV review. And in-house, we've also had the announcement of the Bank
of Ireland and Nevo EV Marketplace. We'll be covering about that. Drop up the podcast,
we'll be talking about some EVs that after the government scrappage scheme, which is the ICE2EV
scrappage scheme, what kind of EVs could you expect for under 20,000 euros? For those who
don't know, my name is Derek Riley. And on this podcast, we chat about all things electric vehicles.
Nevo is Ireland's home of electric motoring, and we'll be covering where we were this week,
what we've been driving, and what we've been doing between the podcasts. If you haven't
already subscribed or followed us wherever you're listening to do, please do so. And if you enjoyed
the episode, please leave us a rating and a comment. It really helps us out and it doesn't
cost you anything. So let's get stuck in straight after the ads. So the week started off with the
Renault 4 plan suit, and that is their electric canvas top. So where does it all come from?
In the press release, they talk about how some models not only leave a mark on the automotive
industry, but also blaze the trail for personal freedoms. The Renault 4 plan suit is reinventing
the original 4L as an electric model. Renault is not simply rebooting a legacy, it's reviving a
lifestyle approach embracing versatility and the wide open spaces. That versatile blue jeans
car, the Renault 4 of yesteryear, has gained a modern crossover successor, and it's even more
committed to meeting the full range of customer requirements. So for example, the car offering
driving pleasure for every day and also the weekends, not two different cars, the same one,
but for all purposes. With the extra touch of care that has the open to the skies and even the world,
welcome to the Renault 4 E-Tech electric plan suit. So the soft top version of the Renault
4 E-Tech electric rekindles the flame for the iconic R4 convertibles from both the plan air,
which was the car with no roof and no doors, in the spirited 60s to its double sunroof for all
requirements. Today Renault 4 E-Tech electric plan suit is creating a new experience, bringing
emotion and a touch of salt every journey along with a huge dose of fun. The Renault 4 E-Tech
plan suit makes a promise of freedom without boundaries, driving the wind in your hair,
the cabin flooded with light, and at the same time, it's a fundamental Renault 4 E-Tech electric
era intact. The instant recognizability, charismatic design, interior space, versatility
with their modular layout, boot capacity with the low loading sill, and even the capacity to
tow a trailer or a small caravan. At the same time, passengers can gain the opening soft top
class beating dimensions, almost one square meter in size of a roof that falls back,
offering the widest opening in the market for an unparalleled feeling of traveling in the
great outdoors. The urge to open the roof was instinctive accessing the outside to let the
light in and join the breeze and the open skies. Renault, in fairness to them, they're not saying
it too many times in the press release, but in the press conference it was very much about
being a convertible, which I don't think is fair to say it is. It is a large sunroof. A convertible
is the roof in total comes, it backs into the car or is taken away from the car. Targa is slightly
different than, but they've done a nice job of it here. More than just another model in the range,
the convertible has all the credentials required to be in the booming market for small electric SUVs,
a market that cars need to stand out, the days of wind in the air, driving or not over, even for
those more rational times marked by the return of simplicity and efficiency. Renault 4 E-Tech plan
suit is true to its heritage and the knitting, modern and wildly desirable, ready to recreate
the magic of travel. So it is very much the overall design is not changed. It is still a five-seater,
it has a 420-liter boot with the ultra-low loading sill and even has a 750-kilo towing capacity.
You're just getting the added bonus of an opening roof. It's still 4.14 meters long with a wheel
base of 2.62, identical promotion proportions, an iconic illuminated grille, 18-inch wheels,
but the plan suit does bring is that only the roof rails and the antenna are absent.
The roof rails are not compatible with an opening roof and the antenna is now integrated
in through a window. Similarly, the choice of colors available in the body, you've got 11
with the techno trim and seven with the iconic finish. The bonnet can be body-colored or black,
along with the wings and the bumper deco parts, options that remain the same and on versions.
The only difference is that the roof and bonnet decorations are incompatible
with the plan suit versions. The opening is 92 centimeters long and 80 centimeters wide.
Class-beating dimensions is what they're claiming for an open top A and B segment.
All passengers in fairness can enjoy the open roof. The video is up on the YouTube channel and the
link will be in the description. And it's doing very well actually for something that's so niche
and I don't know how many they'll actually sell in the car in Ireland.
Despite its length of 92 centimeters, the mechanism for opening and closing the roof
has only three folds rather than the four usually found on similar systems. The structural components
of this roof are made from a polymer rather than a metal. This helps keep the additional
weight to a minimum with the same finish. This version weighs just 19 kgs more than the Renault
E-Tech with the fixed roof. There's no real trade-off in range. Slightly heavier weight means
that the result of the upper body reinforcement is combined with a slight increase in drag
coefficient from CDA of 0.762 to 0.778. However, the battery range falls only slightly just
seven kilometers or 1.8 percent of the overall WLTP range and you have a 392 on the techno trim,
which would have been around the 400. The interior space is the same as mentioned already. You get
960 millimeters for passengers in the front and you are getting 813 for passengers in the rear.
To achieve this result, engineers focus primarily on the roof lining and the roof shapes in the
rear reinforcement designed to cap the shape to limit the impact on passengers' headroom
and top of the trunk. Gone are the days when getting out of the car and something called
in the second person to wrestle with the complexities of opening and closing the roof,
the Renault 4 E-Tech plan suit takes it. Task has never been easier to fall down the roof.
The roof is electronically controlled using the button in the overhead panel or voice control
or via the app. It can be open, closed and adjusted to a range of different positions
to suit everybody's preference, so it doesn't have to be fully open, fully closed.
And also the voice assistant can say, you can say open, half way or open or close.
It takes about 10 seconds to fully open or fully close when my video was 11 seconds.
The roof can be opened or closed driving up to a speed of 90 kilometers an hour. You can also
drive with the roof down with the maximum speed on the highway, thanks in particular to the
automatic deflector that pops up. No other changes on board, still spacious in all of the elements
that the Renault 4. So if you're interested in seeing more of the Renault 4 plan suit,
you can head over to the link in the description or on the NevoReview YouTube channel.
Next up then, we had the Leap Motor B05.
Seen this in IAA last year, I saw it last year. It was called the Lafa 5 in China,
so it was the Lafa 5 that was at the IAA Leap Motor stand. So I got a quick video with that
and then had a more in-depth look around it at the Brussels Motor Show just gone in January of
this year. It has the proportions of a C-segment hatchback and then is the styling of a C-segment
hatchback as well. It's reminding people of the Golf or the Sharaka. It is reminding people at the
front of the Kia EV6. The back is reminding people of some Alphas or some Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
It's going to come in three different trims. It's going to come in the Life Pro,
Life Pro Max, and then Design Pro Max. And then it's going to come in two different battery sizes
as well. 19-inch wheels outside. Suspension is McPherson strut in the front and multi-link in the
rear. The rear wheel drive, but in saying that it doesn't have a frunk. 50-50 weight distribution.
Stellantis, who own 51% of Leap Motor International, are very much about getting the best of the
Chinese car and then make it with more European driving style feel, etc. So they do work on that
in Turin. Frameless doors. Dry coefficient is 0.26. A large panoramic glass sunroof. It has
lots of ADAS, seven airbags, 21 level 2 ADAS features, and it has 14 centres and cameras.
It comes in five different colours. The lightning yellow is the halo colour and the one I went for
was the windy grey in the video. Again, linked in the description or over on the Nevo Review
YouTube channel. Lots of interest in it. Three different colour interiors. There is a black
cloth. There is a light man-made leather or vegan leather and then a dark vegan leather then.
It's 4.43 metres long and has a wheelbase of 2.735. It's the same platform as the Leap Motor B10,
which is really great legroom and space inside. Small but shorter on the headroom with this one
obviously because it's not an SUV, it's a hatch. Comes in Pro and Pro Max. The 56.2 kWh battery
gives you 218 horsepower and then the Pro Max gives you a 67.1 kWh battery,
range of 401 and 482 respectively. 11 kW on AC and 175 kW on DC, 10-80% in about 24 minutes.
30-80% is what they're saying people do more often in 17 minutes. 345-litre boot.
So that is the Leap Motor B05. I got a chance to chat to the VP of commercial operations
from Leap Motor in the Largest Europe and I'll jump into that interview now.
Daniel Alnense, thanks for the opportunity. I'm head of commercial operations for
and Largest Europe at Leap Motor International. So what we see, so thanks for being here.
We present B05 but it's an additional car completing our range. We started two years ago
with T03 and C10. You probably have noticed we arrive later than other European countries in
Ireland but we are already seeing strong momentum thanks to our local importer
that is focusing a lot on the brand and on the opportunity coming from that. We introduce after
C10 the B10. Both C10 and B10 are also available in what we call range extender hybrid technology
that is let's say reserved for those customers with less EV.
More anxiety of range but we really see that the Bev position at the right price
because today our offer goes into full on to the ice price of other manufacturers is actually
opening new territories and the customers are ready to take the leap
and we see really the Bev getting in that space. B05 is completing the range. We're getting into
a CH-back that as you probably have noticed is not very crowded of electric vehicles and so we are
happy to go there. We think that there is a portion of customers that were not served. They were
obliged to move on SUVs but we think that with this package 4.4 meter huge interior space
nearly 500 kilometers of autonomy we will answer to a number of questions on top of the sporty
look and feel of the car that you will experience today so you will tell me later on.
After B05 we have B03X and B03. Both products are going into the core of the B segment. One is an
SUV and the second one is again an H-back so we want to fulfill the B segment as well with a
smaller car than B05, more for city use, two batteries. We will present in September the B03X
and will be ready for dealership between September and October in the case of Ireland
and B03X that will be available very beginning of next year. So with this we are going to complete
the range. Of course we are continuing a new discussion on future products and what we want to
update or what we want to add to our range. You said yesterday you had some interesting
pre-orders and customer orders in markets that you weren't expecting them coming from like Spain.
Yeah we were not expecting simply because those countries are less BEV in our eyes but when you
see what is the customer reaction you understand that customers are taking the leap moving from
thermic car directly into electric and with nearly 500 kilometers of autonomy
you also answer to the range anxiety. We have 178 kilowatts of fast charge capability so also in
that space it's quite quick to charge our car from the 30 to 80 percent in less than 17 minutes.
So for sure also this helps the adoption of the electric cars also in those countries that in our
eyes are not seen as immediate electric countries and this is a good opportunity.
Yeah it takes a lot of boxes it's got the range charging capability it's got the
space inside and so people that may have felt that they wanted or had to go SUV now don't have to go
SUV so it is definitely a market that Leap Motor has said okay we'll go for this one.
Yes because you see the the CHB it has been a bit abandoned by many manufacturers in the past
years as it is for the small cars for the city cars simply not because the customer doesn't want it
but probably because the the manufacturer were going in another space for a number of decision
and strategies but we think that there is a demand not everybody needs an SUV.
You talked about this as well with T03 and the popularity in Italy how it is a small car
still wanted in some European markets. Because at the end I repeat the customer are
there are customers that do not need a 4.2 meter they say we are okay with 3.7 with 3.6 the
percentage of parking possibility that you have between a 3.6 meter and a 4.2 meter or 4 meter
it changes by a number of folds and we have a lot of customers in Rome they simply go for a small
car yes for their daily use they drive alone why they need to go to something bigger because anyway
the car is making a lot of autonomy and we have really really great great response in those big
cities. We're after getting a new scapage scheme in Ireland for older diesel and petrol models for
13 years or more the government is giving an additional 5 000 euros so now T03 is around
12 and a half thousand euros not as affordable as Italy but it's a very affordable car there was
in Italy but okay we had this incentive last year for sure it was a great opportunity and we've been
chosen by a huge number of customers but we think that the package also with these latest news in
Ireland it is it is great and we think that a number of customers might choose the car for the
combination between interior space and exterior and exterior 3.6 meters quite compact car but big
inside and with very good city use. When we looked at B10 last year when we looked at the car there
was a lot of conversation about it's a Chinese car but it's not just a Chinese car sold in Europe
there has been European optimization as well. And this is what we see on B05 where we did a great
job I personally drove the car this new European one that you will enjoy today for the first time
yesterday and clearly I see a big difference versus the Chinese one I know. There was a huge job
done by our Stellantis engineers in Baloco it's not only a matter of software tuning
change of suspension and a number of other things that Alexis explains yesterday in the press
conference and it really makes the car European. This is a big opportunity we have this partnership
digital invention with Stellantis allows us to bring what the customer wants. Last question we
teased yesterday even though we saw it a while ago the ultra version it is going to be has to be
right for the European market. This is what what we said if we want to raise the bar we want to do
it in a proper way so there are studies ongoing to see to which extent we can do it it will not be
the one to one of the Chinese ultra if we do it slightly different again four Europe needs
four Europe demand so stay tuned and let's see what we are able to bring on potentially on the
market next year. Perfect thank you very much. Thank you. Next up we have the Cadillac Lyric that
launched on the YouTube channel there last week and Cadillac has been brought in Ireland by Charles
Hearst Group and they are operating Cadillac out of beside Audi South Dublin and Sandyford
it would have been the old used NI site right beside the Audi site which is also operated
by Charles Hearst. Very interesting the Cadillac Lyric it is a large five meter SUV very distinctive
on the road over 100 kilowatt hour battery and yeah real world range probably between 450 and 500
it is a tank of a thing I had to the ability and parking it in the city there city parking spaces
aren't big enough for it and I had an event and I was heading to Drury Street Cow Park
and the attendant was like you can take two spaces there. Google built-in infotainment system
it in some areas it's very premium it has ventilated massage heated seats all that kind of stuff
so if you expect from a 95 to 100,000 euros electric SUV but then in other areas it is coming
down in quality and the central console it's a bit too plasticy it's a bit too glossy in certain
areas so it's going to be put up against the Mercedes the Audis of this world and BMWs and it
does have to stack up now there are people out there that want something different and this is
definitely that it was definitely a head turner and as well as that people are seeming to like it
on YouTube so there is going to be interest in the Cadillac and there are going to be two other
models as well coming to the market VISTIQ which is the bigger one and Optique which is their
entry level won't be an entry level to price of too much with the new updated
the pricing with the grand system that is going to drop from 60 to 50,000 so I don't think it's
going to come in within that so the price is going to be of a premium price it's a premium
product in their opinion I got a lot of comments on social media with regards to the price of this
lyric in North America it's going to be $65,000 but we're getting it for 100,000 euros here so
whether it's tariffs or whether there's an American car premium that's been applied to it
it has to stand up to push drive it's on really nice suspension it has sensors in the driver's
seat which vibrates and so that's interesting as well and so if you're interested in finding out
more about the Cadillac lyric you can head over to the Neville Road YouTube channel or you can
look at the link in the description as well Bank of Ireland and the Neville EV marketplace it's

About this episode
A soft-top Renault 4 revival takes center stage, with the roof opening while driving up to 90 km/h and only a small WLTP range impact. The hosts then shift to the Leapmotor B05, covering trims, charging (11 kW AC / 175 kW DC), and how fast charging and “nearly 500 kilometers of autonomy” target range anxiety. Ireland’s EV push continues via Bank of Ireland’s Nevo-powered marketplace, plus a roundup of EVs under €20k after scrappage/grants.
Welcome back to the Nevo EV News Podcast. If it's Tuesday it must be Nevo EV News Day. My name is Derek Reilly and on this podcast we chat all about EV. Nevo is Ireland's home of electric motoring and we'll be covering where we were this week, what we've been driving and what we've been doing between podcasts. If you haven't already subscribed or followed us wherever you are listening please do so and if you enjoyed the episode, please leave a rating and comment, it really helps us out and it doesn't cost you anything. Let's get stuck in.
