Spark plugs help start the engine by creating a small spark that ignites the fuel. They can wear out and need to be changed to keep the engine running well.
Ignition coils help create the spark that starts the engine. If they fail, the engine may not start or run smoothly. They might need to be replaced along with spark plugs.
A 95,000 mile service is a maintenance check for your car that happens when it reaches 95,000 miles. It usually involves changing the oil, checking the brakes, and making sure everything is working well.

For delicious meals you could go out to eat
or spend hours in the kitchen.
Or you could just make a Marie Calendar's meal.
Yeah, you heard me.
Marie Calendar's classic chicken parmesanibol is delicious
with scratch made marinara sauce, creamy mozzarella cheese,
and no preservatives.
It's high in protein with 30 grams per serving.
Marie Calendar's What Having It All Tastes Like.
Marie, oh, driving down there in the room.
She said, give it to her through the windows down.
Born and lost, don't we get to town in your ship today?
Taking your car questions, the number to call?
513-73.
What about the number?
745-55.
So I got distracted.
I mean, you were talking to Tony.
I got distracted.
He's distracted me, so.
So again, I'm here.
Dane Donovan taking all of your car questions.
Again, the number to call?
513-749-5500.
That number again, 513-749-5500.
I was, it wasn't necessary, Tony, that was distracting me.
It was, I was distracted because of, I was telling a story.
And I sometimes can get a bit animated.
And my frustrations can inhibit my ability to give out phone numbers.
So, but again, I am here.
I did remember to bring my headphones today.
And in fact, last week as some of you were tuning in,
I was late about 15 minutes late.
You'd think I'd have it narrowed down by now, but I did not.
But I this morning woke up and I put my headphones on my bag.
So I had to bring them with me.
And in fact, I was leaving in my middle son,
who's probably the most irresponsible child I have says,
Dad, don't forget your headphones.
I'm like, man, that's bad when you're,
and my damn, my producer texts me this morning as well.
And I mean, my son literally, my middle son will walk out the door
to go to school with no shoes on.
And he says to me, Dad, don't forget your headphones.
And I'm like, man, I have hit rock bottom.
When my, when my 12 year olds tell me,
don't forget my headphones.
So, but I am here and in my opinion was on time.
But for other people it's late, but I was on before that I had to be on.
So I'm here all day, not all day for a full hour, taking your car questions.
Again, the number to call 513-749-5500.
Again, I mentioned last week and I want to bring it up again.
Donovan's Auto Entire Center was voted best in Cincinnati,
best of the city.
And really proud of that, really proud of our customers
that voted for us and we couldn't do it without you.
And I just wanted to thank everybody for voting for us.
And again, we will continue to give you the best service
at Donovan's Auto Entire Center, the best service that you can possibly get.
So also I want to make a quick mention to I, we are hiring technicians.
So if there's a, if anybody listening there is looking for a technician position,
please email me or give me a call at my new location.
That's the auto foreign location.
If you just go to DonovanTire.com again, it's Donovan's Auto Foreign.
And that's probably one of the biggest struggles in this line of work.
And really it's across the board everywhere, right?
Retail stores and mechanics and plumbers and electricians.
And it's probably the most difficult part of what we do.
Now mind you, when I got into this, when I got into this,
you could find a technician pretty easily, right?
But now with all the technology and the equipment
and all the training you need, and it really, it's hard.
So if there's anybody out there that may be looking
or know if somebody is looking, please send them my way.
I would greatly appreciate it.
So again, taking your phone calls, I'm going to call 513-749-5500.
Let's go to the phones.
We have Eddie.
Hey, Eddie, welcome to the car show.
How can I help?
Hey, good afternoon.
Yeah, I spoke to you a couple of weeks ago
about my wife's 2018 Volvo with the stop-stop issue.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
And you told me to give you a call back
if maybe you did some research.
Yeah, and correct me if I'm wrong.
You did the auxiliary battery and the main battery.
You did both batteries.
Correct.
Correct.
And I just did a voltage check, the car sat for two days
and the main battery had 12.52 volts.
The auxiliary had 12.95 volts.
And then when I started up, the main battery jumps to 15.17 volts
and the auxiliary jumped to 15.22 volts.
OK.
While it was running.
Still having the issue.
Yeah.
I did do some research.
I did do some looking and digging.
And I did not find anything that was alarming or glaring
or anything that I could pinpoint, put my finger on.
I'm wondering if, I think, I know I'm sure
you're trying to avoid this.
You haven't taken it anywhere, correct?
No, I have not.
My opinion and thought process.
I mean, like I said, I didn't see anything glaring.
Nothing popped out in front of me.
I'm wondering if it's just a software glitch
or software update or issue.
A lot of times there might just be a software update
to try to get that to work.
Have you tried?
The other thing that we can try to do is disconnect
the main battery and put both battery cable ends,
disconnecting them, holding them together
for about a minute.
What this does is it's kind of like a hard reset.
If your cell phone's acting up, you turn it off.
If your computer's acting up, you turn it off to a restart.
So by taking both battery cable ends off on the main battery,
holding them together, a lot of times that will,
basically, it's a hard restart for the car.
You can try that.
If the start-stop feature still is not working,
it's probably a software issue that is only,
unfortunately, going to have to go back to the dealer.
Okay, I'll give it a shot.
Try it. Let me know.
Thank you.
And congratulations on your award.
Oh, thank you. I appreciate that.
Have a great weekend.
You too. Take care.
Bye-bye.
I don't know what it is,
but I get a ton of callers from Boston.
Ton. At least one or two a week.
And I've been to Boston,
once, beautiful city, too.
Love it.
I told my wife I was going to take her up there one time.
One of these days.
We're lucky if we can even go out to dinner.
So, we've got just sports on top of sports,
on top of sports.
I'm leaving here going to two more basketball games.
And we actually are going to try to do a movie tonight,
but we'll see how that works out.
So, all right.
Again, I'm taking your phone calls.
The number to call is 513-749-5500.
That number again, 513-749-5500.
Phone lines are wide open.

Promise to get you in here.
So yeah, I don't know if everybody's getting ready for the Super Bowl or what.
Everybody's got car problems.
But anyways, I wanted to talk about Eddie who just called from Boston.
He's got this software issue.
More and more every day we see things like this
with these newer cars and the software issues.
And it is challenging in our industry because
for a shop like us, it's so expensive to have everybody's software.
Mercedes, you've got to have different software.
BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover.
I mean, they're all different softwares.
And it's really, really difficult to have all of them, right?
So you've got to make sure that you're taken into a reputable shop
and making sure that they have the equipment and the tools to do that.
Now, there are some times where we might not, right?
And the best thing to do is just say, listen, I don't have the software
or I might not have the proper tool to do this.
Mainly it's just software.
I mean, anything that pertains to the brakes, the tires, the engine,
everything like that's fine.
But, you know, we get a lot of phone calls about people wanting us to,
you know, hey, do you program keys?
I need a new key.
I need a new ignition key.
And that is like, that's like four knocks.
I mean, really, the dealerships have that market cornered pretty well.
And I mean, I remember, heck, when I first started driving,
you would have two sets of keys, right?
Or two keys.
You'd have one for the ignition, one for the door.
You know, nowadays, you don't even have to take your key out of your pocket.
And which my wife never, ever loses her car keys anymore
because she never takes them out of her purse.
So there's kind of, there's a, you know, there is a good feature.
But it's funny, a lot of people come in that are dropping their car off.
And they're wanting to, I'm like, all right, can I have your key?
And they're like, oh yeah.
And they're just like, just digging, digging through that purse
to try to find that key because they just don't take it out.
But, you know, the software, and that's why sometimes you want to make sure
that you're taking it, that your vehicle to, you know, a reputable shop
that can do these updates.
And like I said, most vehicles we can,
all your Honda's, your Toyota's, your Ford's, your GM's, we can do BMW.
But, you know, sometimes the Land Rover, Range Rover, Mercedes,
sometimes those, they don't release that software.
And it's, you know, it's hard to, it's hard to do that.
So, you know, you just want to make sure that you're getting it to another great shop.
So I keep the phone lines, they're lighting up, but they come on and they pop off.
So, but anyways, the number to call 513-749-5500, that number again,
513-749-5500.
I wanted to, and I know that I harp on this all the time.
And, well, actually, I think we've got, yeah, we've got, all right, we've got John.
Hey, John, welcome to the car show, how can I help?
Yes, I just wanted to, I called last week about my cobalt, and you told me to get AC Delco
cam sensor.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
The solenoids, yeah.
And, yeah, and I replaced, replaced the one and kept, kept one old, old one,
and replaced the one that that's hard to get to, which is in the back.
And cleared, cleared the codes and then started it up and
no check engine light came back.
So that worked.
Really?
And they see Delcos.
Yep. Because you used a different company that read codes for you and you bought it from there
and they didn't work.
Yeah. Well, well, I'm glad.
So you put the two AC Delcos sensors in it and light didn't come back on and it's been good ever since.
Right.
Great.
That's awesome.
Thanks for the follow-up.
I appreciate it.
Yep.
Yeah, I know next time if it's anything electronic wise, just go to the dealer.
Yeah, it's, you know, and I've said, I've said it a million times on the show, but look,
if you're doing the work yourself, just spend the extra money and buy the factory part.
I know it's more, but really when it comes to something like this, right,
it was able to fix your problem, right?
A lot of people would be racking their brains like, oh, maybe I need a computer.
Maybe it's the wiring.
No, it was just the aftermarket sensors just, you know, weren't working.
You know, and, and I'm not, you know, we put aftermarket parts on cars.
But it depends on what you're doing, right?
If you want to put aftermarket brakes or an alternator starter, I'm okay with that, right?
But when you get into the electronics of the vehicle, especially timing parts,
you really want to stick to the original, you know, the OEM manufacturer just because
they're really, really finicky and you got to put the factory part in.
Otherwise, you know, so.
Well, good.
I'm glad you called.
I appreciate the follow up.
And yeah, electrical parts, especially when it comes to timing stuff or also
mass airflow sensors, that is the biggest racket out there.
Mass air, mass airflow sensors will fail all the time in oxygen sensors.
And people put aftermarket ones in and then they have the same code.
And they're like, well, that obviously wasn't the problem.
And just the aftermarket ones just aren't good quality.
So, yeah.
Yeah.
And one thing it made me do is go ahead and give me a code reader for myself and that.
And I bought one out of it.
You can actually do live data with it too.
So I figured that that'll be more beneficial and I can do it myself or
having someone else read it.
Well, absolutely.
And then you can see too, you know, if you've got a misfire or whatnot,
I was, uh, you know, via 1000, I think it was that I got.
Okay.
Yeah.
I mean, when you, when you get one that can record live data,
that's really helpful because a lot of times if you've got a vehicle that's,
you know, v6 or v8 and it's misfiring, right?
And sometimes these cars will just flag up PO 300,
which is a random cylinder misfire.
And you're like, well, which one's misfiring?
It's not flagging that particular cylinder.
So if you can watch the live, the live stream and watch that and you,
and you can watch which cylinder is misfiring or how many times it's misfired
allows you to pinpoint exactly which cylinder is, is your problem.
So you're not having to do, you know, a major, major tune up, you know,
replacing all the spark plugs and all the coils,
which can cost a lot of money.
So I think it'd be worth the investment.
Yep.
I do appreciate your suggestion, Marilyn.
You know, hey, I appreciate the follow up and yeah.
So well, thank you so much.
Good luck to you.
If you need anything else, you give me a call.
Okay.
Thank you.
All right.
Take care.
That's always good news to hear.
You know, sometimes I, sometimes I guess right now.
Um, that's the, we've talked, I've talked about this on the show.
Look, if you're doing the work yourself and I'm never will I ever
talk anybody out of doing the work themselves?
You're saving yourself a lot of money.
That's, and that's what the show's about is I'm here to help you out in any way,
shape or form that I can.
And the gentleman called last week said, hey, I've got these codes.
I put in the sensors and I still have the same codes.
And I told John, I said, look, put in an AC Delco sensor, put in the factory part.
Are they more?
Sure.
But in this case, you never, especially with timing parts, you really don't want to
do aftermarket.
You want to just do factory.
And the sensors aren't much.
The sensors, I think they're around like 76 bucks a piece or two of,
and there's an intake and exhaust.
They're 76 bucks.
Can you buy some on eBay for, or I'm sorry, Amazon for 20 bucks?
Yeah.
But, you know, this gentleman had to do the job twice because he bought a cheaper part.
So you want to be careful, especially in aftermarket.
And again, we use aftermarket parts.
I'm not knocking them, but you need to be, you need to make sure that you do your
homework and especially if you're doing it yourself, spend the money on the,
on the good part.
If you're doing after, if you're, again, if you're doing a starter alternator,
brakes, wiper blades, you know, something like that, you can do aftermarket.
That'd be fine.
You know, but when you get into the electronics, modules and sensors,
mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensor, you know, what's the, what John was talking about is
VVT, solenoids, things like that.
You really want to stick to the original equipment manufacturer.
Okay.
And, you know, if it's, if it's a GM product, it's AC Delco, if it's a Ford
product, it's Motorcraft, if it's a Honda, it's, it's Denso.
And if it's Toyota, it's Denso.
So, you know, you want to make sure that, you know, use a good quality part and save
yourself from having to do the job twice.
So, all right.
Again, the number to call 513-749-5500, that number again, 513-749-5500.
I wanted to, I had a gentleman.
I wanted to bring this up and I, I didn't argue with him,
but I tried to steer him in the right direction.
The gentleman brought his vehicle in for a 95,000 mile service,
which really isn't much.
It was just an oil change and kind of checked the car over, looked the car over
and he goes, hey, when did I have my oil change last?
And I said, well, you, I go back in this history and his oil was changed at 90,000
and he's 95, so he's due.
And he goes, I want to bring it in for a 95,000 mile service,
but I don't want to change the oil.
And I said, is there any particular reason why?
And he goes, well, I've been, my car says to change it every 10,000.
And I said, well, that's, I mean, that's what they,
that's what the dealer record, that's what the vehicle recommends,
but really you should be changing every 5,000.
And he goes, you know, so we, we, we kind of went round and round
as to why he wanted it done in 10.
And you know, I'll, if that's what he wants, that's, that's perfectly fine.
But I tried to a little bit kind of course them into like,
really should be changing every 5,000 miles, especially if, if, I mean,
he's bringing it in every 5,000 miles.
I mean, he was on top of his maintenance.
I checked his maintenance schedule.
I mean, everything he was doing was, was right on time for, for maintenance,
but he only changes oil every 10,000 miles.
And I tried to, I tried like heck to try to get him to get his oil changed,
but he didn't want to do it.
So, but again, we want to focus on the sticker that's in your window.
It's every 5,000 miles, the oil should be changed every day.
I have a car in my shop that it's in there because it has an oil problem,
either timing chain issues.
John just called about that very wild timing to the silinoids.
Those go bad because of lack of oil pressure and time and time again.
It's a conversation that we need to have and I, I know I talk about it a lot,
but it's, it's just, it's just something that we, we need to, I need to,
I just feel like I, I need to pound it in everybody's head that it's 5,000 miles
that we need to be changing this oil.
Okay. I recently, again, had the opportunity to buy a new vehicle
myself and guess what?
The truck tells me I need to change oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
You know what I did at 5,000 miles?
I changed the oil on that, on that vehicle.
Okay. And can the vehicles, and I watched a great, great, there's a,
there's a gentleman that I follow on Instagram and I was watching it before I came,
before I came to the studio and he was talking about, you know, he had a Nissan.
60,000 miles had one oil change in 60,000 miles.
They pulled the valve covers off of this thing and there's just mud, it's just tar,
it's just mud. And man, it's the simplest and best thing that you can do for your vehicle.
And yet I do believe that there's a lot of misleading and I think confusion, right?
And so when there's confusion, everybody goes, well, I'll just, I don't know, I'll just
do every 10,000 or I'll just do with the, no, I'm telling you, 5,000 miles is when you
should be, you, these cars aren't getting any cheaper. These things are, you know,
50, 60, 70, I mean, it's $100,000 for a vehicle and the single best thing and cheapest thing that
you can do to keep it on the road is to change the oil. And I just want everybody to know that
I'm telling you every 5,000 miles is one it needs to be done. I mean, my father-in-law was
talking to him last week when I left the show, he had another basketball game and he goes,
hey, we were listening to your show. And he goes, my mother-in-law was actually saying, hey,
listen, we just bought a new car and we're at like 2,500 miles. Should we change it now? And I
said, no, change it at 5,000. Just, just stick to 5 and you'll be fine. But far too often, you know,
he actually bought a Toyota and when he took it in there, they gave him free oil changes,
like three free oil changes. He took it in there at 5,000 miles and they're like, oh,
no, no, you don't need an oil change yet. So they wouldn't honor the free oil change
at 5,000. Like, no, you need to bring it back in 10,000, which in my opinion
is wrong. If the customer, if you give him three free oil changes and he wants to change it at 5,000,
I believe that you should do it at 5,000. So make sure, please, you know,
I just can't harp it enough. Please, every 10,000, every 5,000 miles, it needs to be changed.
I don't care what the book says. I don't care what the car salesman that sold you the
vehicle said. Look at that little sticker in your window every 5,000 miles and you will
get, I guarantee you 200,000 miles out of your vehicle. And so often, that's not what we're seeing.
I mean, I've got a vehicle, I have a mini Cooper at my shop right now, 86,000 miles on it won't
run, needs chains because there was no oil in it and it stretched the chain jump time and so the
gentleman was like, you know what, I'm not going to fix it. I mean, 86,000 miles, we shouldn't
be junking our cars at 86,000 miles. And it all led to the fact that he wasn't changing the
oil or it was ran low on oil multiple times, which led to the demise of the chain and
him not fixing the car. So now he's got to go out and buy another, you know, $50,000, $60,000
vehicle. So it's important and I can't stress it enough. So, all right, again, I'm taking your
phone calls and I would call 513-749-5500. That never again, 513-749-5500. Phone lines

Let's go back to the phones. We've got Dan. Hey, Dan, welcome to the car show. How can I help?
Hi, Dan. Hey, man. I have a 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid. It's got a 2.0 in it. And I changed
thermostat on it a couple of months ago. And I think I got air in there. I don't know how to
get it out. Great question. Have you... Is the vehicle overheating or anything?
No, but it doesn't heat up. It's doing the exact same thing before I put the new thermostat
in it. These hybrids don't like cold. So it takes it forever to warm up. I mean,
it'll start blowing out heat pretty much right away, but the visible gauge will take forever to
show it even move when it's really cold, especially. Okay. And then it was doing that
before and that's why you put the thermostat in it, but it's still...
Is the gauge up? I mean, is the gauge in the middle and still you don't have great heat?
No, I have great heat, but the gauge will drop down on very cold days when I have the blower on
high. You could see the thermostat drop and drop and drop and drop and it'll go all the way down
to cold. And then after I drive it with the engine on, you can see it raising back up a little
bit, but when it's like this temperature, it'll stay right in the middle where it's supposed to.
And it's always done that. It's about used in 2018. Oh, it's always done that?
Yeah. But I don't know. Is there a device you have to put on the filler cap of the reservoir
and it blows air across it and sucks out the air or something? I don't know.
So, I mean, typically a couple of things. Some cars, yes, you can get air trapped in the
heater core and cause low heat or whatnot. What we do, yeah, there is a device you can...
You need like... It's mostly on European vehicles. It wouldn't be on a Ford.
But typically what you want to do, if you want to try to get air out of it,
is have it running. You want the radiator higher than the heater core, right? So,
either park it on a really steep hill. What we do is like we'll just jack up the front end. We'll
put it on a lift. We'll just jack up the front end, right? And so that the radiator is the highest
part. So what do you want to do? And then when it's warmed up, you know, with the wheels,
the radiator, again, the heater core is going to be right behind the glove box, right? So,
you want that radiator higher than that. So it doesn't have to be
ridiculously high. But, you know, on a nice steep hill or if you have access to like some,
you know, some drive-on ramps, if you're going to like change your oil,
get them on there. And then what you're going to do is just you're going to kind of
maybe get it at like 2,000, 3,000 rpms. And you want that... Get it up to normal operating
temperature. You want those fans to kick on. And you want to... While those fans are on,
you're giving it gas, right? You're trying to force that air out of the the heater core.
And hopefully, you want the radiator cap off as well. You want the... So some coolant might spill
out or whatnot. So, you know, make sure, you know, you're not making a mess in your driveway,
but you want the radiator cap off. You want the front wheels, the radiator higher than the
heater core, and then get it at the operating temperature. And you're going to give it
some gas to 3,000 rpms. And you want... You want that coolant cycling through that and try to get
that air bubble or that air pocket out of that heater core. Okay. So this car doesn't have a radiator
cap. It's got just a reservoir and it's got a reservoir cap. Yeah. Keep the reservoir cap off.
Yeah. Oh, gotcha. All right. Thank you for that. And just have it higher than the heater core.
And eventually after it boils itself out, you cannot accelerate... You cannot accelerate
these cars when they're... Yeah. But I did let it run and it did bubble out and I believe it
may have come out all the way. I don't know. It's very interesting. So what I'll do is I'll put it
on the ramps and get the front end of it raised up and just put it new. So the trick on these
cars is to get them to run is to turn the key on, actually thinking that it's going to start
when it doesn't because it's a hybrid. Right. Then put halfway down on the accelerator and
the engine will start up. And then once it does that, then put your foot on the brake and put it
in neutral and it'll continue to run until you put it in park. Got it. This is the trick
to get a hybrid to run when they're... Because they don't want to run. Their goal is not to run
at all. Yeah. Yeah. I know. And they don't have a serpentine belt either. So I'm in there
trying to change the serpentine belt. There is a one. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, I know. I'm not a
fan of them, but some... I mean, there's... I'll tell you what though. There's a lot of people out
there driving hybrids. I'm just gonna... I'll never do it again. I'll never buy another hybrid. I'll
tell you right now. I didn't admit less. I'm glad to hear that. Well, I'm glad to hear that.
I just... I don't know. I mean, you see, for me, it's just like... I see it all the time.
Everybody's like, great. Yes. You save a lot of money on gas, right? Yeah. 50 miles a gallon. Yeah.
But at about 100,000 miles or a little bit less or a little bit more, the hybrid battery on the
vehicle goes bad. And on a Prius, it's over $5,000, right? So my thought in theory is like,
well, the amount of money you saved on that gas, you're going... It goes right to replacing
the hybrid battery. So... Yeah, which leaves the larger footprint than any kind of drilling,
whatever. Absolutely. When they make these batteries take up so much of the environment,
it's unbelievable. Well, and then I talked about that. I think it was last week about
the electric cars and the Tesla's and whatnot and all these electric cars that are out here
and all the mining you have to do to get these batteries manufactured. And then,
guess what? We're going to have a major problem because nobody is really having the conversation.
How are we going to get rid of these batteries? What are we going to do? We're going to...
So it's going to be a big problem. And all these Teslas are going to...
We're going to get to a point where there's 30, 40, 50,000 Tesla batteries sitting in some
yard or something and when that thing catches on fire, we'll have ourselves a massive...
So I'm just... No way to recycle them. No, no. So I'm not a big fan.
I'll never do it again. Oh my gosh, never. I'm so thankful for your service that you guys offer
your 255K RC. They're decades of people that listen and used to listen to the other team
and we're thankful for you. We just want you to know that. I appreciate that, man. I really do.
Dan, you guys are awesome. Thanks, Dan. I appreciate it.
Man, that makes me feel good. I come in here every Saturday from one to two to come here
and answer and help you and guide you through your car problems. Maybe it might be purchasing
a vehicle or buying a new used vehicle or fixing the one that you have.
A lot of Saturdays, I miss my kids' baseball games or basketball games or football games because
I'm here for two reasons. One, to help you fix your car and guide you and give you the best
advice that I possibly can. And second of all, I love what I do. As long as I can remember,
I come from a third-generation family of owners in Donovan Tire. My grandfather started it. My uncle
and my dad took it over. My cousin and I took it from them. And since I was as long as I can remember,
this is what I wanted to do. And I enjoy it. I love it. It's every day perfect and
and we're, you know, it's Mayberry? No. But I can't imagine myself doing anything else. And
I want to pass on my knowledge and help people out and get their cars fixed as best as I can.
So they can get on to another task, right? Something, you know, that is, you know,
a family issue or getting to work or being able to see their kids play at the game or
whatnot. So that's why I'm here. This is why I do it. I love what I do.
And I want to help you. I want to help you guys out. So all right. Again, I'm taking your phone
calls. I don't recall 513-749-5500. Coming up, we have Donnie and Wayne. You're listening to the

Vehicle back on the road. Call 513-829-9030. 829-9030. Glenn Beck breaking down the top stories
and how it impacts your life Monday morning at 9 on 55KRC, The Talk Station.
You're listening to The Car Show on 55KRC. I'm Dane Donovan from Donovan's Auto
Entire Center and here every Saturday to take your car question. So we're going to run out of
time so we've got two calls here. I want to get to the phones. Let's go to Donnie. Hey Donnie,
welcome to The Car Show. How can I help? Oh, hi sir. I have an 07 Honda Odyssey approaching
269,000 miles. Wow, good for you. Glenn, oh, she's a wonderful car, man. She's been strong.
When it starts cold, I get a groaning noise out of the engine bay that varies as I turn the
steering wheel. Yes. I'm in my 70s on fixed income and I don't want to just throw parts at
it. Sure. I wanted to, if you could help me diagnose definitively that the power steering
pump. No. So here's what I want you to do. I don't want you to replace the pump yet. There's an inlet
and an outlet O-ring. Okay. So you've got, you replaced them both. And a power steering hose already.
Okay. So you did the pressure hose and you did both O-rings and it's still groaning?
Yes. Okay. Is it bubbling? Like when you start it up, if you take the cap off the reservoir,
is the power steering, is the fluid bubbling up at all?
You know, I haven't noticed that. So I know the fluid level is fine.
Okay. Fluid level is fine. And so typically when those O-rings go bad, the fluid itself will
bubble up. But if you've replaced them and the fluid itself is not bubbling up and you've
replaced the pressure line in both O-rings, then the only thing left is the pump. That's it.
Okay. I've never seen a rack cause a whining noise. I've seen a power steering rack opinion
cause a stiffness in turning the wheel. But you're not experiencing that, correct? You're just getting
a groan. Correct. When the car is warmed up, does that groan come down a little bit or does it
stay the same? It goes away. Okay. Yeah. So and here and so the pumps just probably,
so that, you know, when that fluid is cold, the viscosity, the thickness of it is,
it's a lot thicker, right? And then once the car warms up, it's nice and hot,
that fluid gets thinner. So it's less for the pump to have to pump that fluid. So
it sounds like you've covered all your bases. The only thing is it's going to need a pump.
That's it. I was wondering, a friend of mine told me that there's a filter at the bottom of the
reservoir and I was wondering what the second viscosity is that could hinder the flow of the fluid
when it's cold. You know, I'm sure it has a screen in it, but I've never seen one
cause of power steering. I've never seen one. I've never replaced the reservoir on a Honda ever.
Now, just because I haven't seen it or I've never done it doesn't mean it can't happen.
I mean, you could probably take the, if you wanted to, you could probably take the reservoir out
and clean that screen. You could try that before you replace the pump.
I mean, has the pump ever been replaced?
Well, not since I've owned it. I'm the second owner.
Okay. All right. I mean, it's worth the shot. I mean, if you take the,
to take the reservoir off is going to take, you know, 15, 20 minutes, you know,
it's going to make a mess, but you know, take the reservoir, you know,
if you could try to suck out as much of that fluid as you could,
take that reservoir out and try to clean that screen at the bottom,
you could try that. It's worth a shot. And if it's, if it doesn't change,
it's, it's got to be the pump. Okay. Thank you so much, sir. All right. Take care. Bye-bye.
All right. Let's go back to the phones. We've got Wayne. Hey, Wayne,
welcome to the car show. How can I help? Oh, thank you, Dane. I got a 2018 Optimus
and every fill up I have to put, uh, not a half a quart in, but a quarter of a quart of oil.
And I didn't know if they had a recall on oil consumption. It's got 50,000 miles on it with
100,000 more. Yes. So I understand. I got to throw a rod or a main bearing before they'll
replace that boat. Well, yeah, pretty much. I mean, so here's what I want you to do.
I want you to schedule it with your local Kia dealer. And what I want you to do when you
schedule it, you say, Hey, listen, I would like to, I'd like to schedule appointment for an oil
consumption test, right? So what the deal, what they'll do is they'll go in, they'll change your
oil, they cap off the, the dipstick in the, um, you know, the oil cap itself and they'll do
an oil consumption test. They'll tell you to bring it back in 1000 miles. They'll reassess
it and whatnot. But it is, I have been led to believe that basically Hyundai and Kia was
pretty much the same man. In fact, they're same. Basically they're not doing anything until the
thing locks up. And, uh, over the summer, I had one, I had a customer that had one locked up
and he was number 98 in line to get an engine replaced. Number 98. I mean, it's taken months
and months to put an engine in that car. I mean, but they're, they're honoring it. They're replacing
them. But what I would say is get it on the books, go to the dealer, get, that way it's in your
history that yes, you know, you have an oil consumption issue, get it on the books that,
yes, you brought it into the dealer and basically it gives you a little bit more leverage. So if
you're, you know, I would, I would, you know, I would do it several times, you know,
over the course of a year or two. Yeah. Have them tested each time or change your oil.
Yes. I need an oil consumption test done and that way it's on there. So if you ever do get
out of warranty and it locks up and they're like, Hey, you're out of warranty. Sorry,
I can't do anything for you. And so, Hey, listen, I was here multiple times.
Yeah. It's telling you, showing you that this thing is burning oil.
But I think, I think it's, I think it's up to 150,000 miles that they're covering these engines.
So really? I'm almost certain it's 150,000 miles. I love the car. I mean, I love it.
Yeah. Good on gas. I mean, it handles great. Yeah. It's a huge problem. I got two of them.
I got a 2004. Yeah. I mean, oil consumption is a huge problem. That kind of goes back to
what I was talking about getting the oil changed regularly because he's, you know, if you, if your
car is burning a quart of oil every 3000 miles and you go 10 and these cars are only holding
four quarts by the time you get in for an oil change, if you even bring it in at 10 and that
12 or 15,000 miles, the cars don't have any oil in them and then the chain stretch and it
causes massive, it's a huge domino effect. Yeah. I'm not paid by any oil companies.
I'm not, I'm not, you know, I'm just telling you every single car that comes, just about every
single car has got an oil problem and it's because these things are burning oil. So
yeah, get it, get it to the dealer and do an oil consumption test.
Okay. Great. Great. I appreciate it. All right. Have a great weekend. Appreciate the phone call.
The moral of the story, I'm going to talk about it next Saturday in the following Saturday.
In the following Saturday, please, if you're out there, you're listening to me, if you're
driving a vehicle 5,000 miles on an oil change, that's it. Period. If anybody would love to call me
and prove me wrong, please feel free. You can't do it today. Call me next Saturday.
But I'm telling you, it's a huge problem and I want you to be aware that it is important
and imperative that the oil gets changed every 5,000 miles. Do that, your car will
last you 300,000 miles. Also, again, if you know I am, we are hiring technicians, if you know anybody,
please send them my way. You can go to dain at DonovanTire.com or call me at DonovanTire.com.
You can go to DonovanTire.com. I'm at Donovan's Auto Foreign and give me a call.
And I'd love to hear from anybody that's looking for a technician looking for a job.
So, I really do appreciate it. So, I will be back next Saturday to answer all of your questions.
And everybody, tomorrow, enjoy the Super Bowl. We already know who's going to win.
But anyways, I'm not even going to get on that topic. But hey, everybody, have a great and safe
weekend. I'll be back next Saturday to answer all of your car questions. I'm Dane Donovan
