Thank you for evening one. And all I just want to preface
today's episode. It's it was a very special
birthday during the Eric. Yeah.
And Happy Birthday mr. Prince, thank you very much.
I had a, I had a spectacular, Good Festival of David for the first week of March. So the actual number, but I like
breaking it down a bit into components, for example, I'm 45.
So you might say, for example, I'm 3015 okay, okay?
David, you could say you're 40 20, for example, I could buy her. Thank you.
Something about the way you feel about them.
So that's right. That's what we ever up and
actually a good mate, who's a It over then me said to me that I'm entering the fourth, not the last the fourth chapter of between Decades of your life which is the one where you get to do, what you want to do, when you want to do it without having to worry about anyone else. So, look out.
Want to get out of that chapter. I'm still in it, that's it.
Yeah, I don't want to get out of it.
You're not any here, you're not an idiot.
No, no, no. I mean it now because I can do
whatever I want. Well, but that's on me.
I don't want to get out of it. No, no, no, no.
I was dying it. No, that's that's what I want to
do colleagues and I'm sure I've said this before, but she was like, you know, because I was whinging about turning 30 years ago and she said, she said, it would, you always want to have your birthday because the alternative is you're dead.
So precise, he will be their habit and enjoy it and or you're not here anymore. So you can get well column a
column B. I'll take column A is even Moses
will roll with it and enjoy it. Mmm.
And every once in, Stand up ever since we had that discussion.
I'm like, yeah, bring it on. Absolutely.
And thankfully, I work for myself.
So I give the boss, a Stern, talking-to.
And I actually take my birthday off now every yeah, I've had a number of people contact me last week even and saying, oh, we need you Thursday, I said, well, pray that break afford me Thursday because my birthday surcharge is so astronomically high. That wouldn't be interested.
So I mean if you, if you had millions of Of dollars less per se but you might you might make an exception but true true.
Yeah. If there were so you look look
it's an emergency job. This cars going to Italy.
It needs to look pristine. It's leaving in about five
minutes can you come and fix it? We will give you let's say x
amount of money. You'll be like, let me check my
schedule. The eggs has a lot of decimal
places to the and we would be fine.
Correct. A wise person once told me he's
like, you should be wary of what you charge because your time is valuable. So, So and I think that's a good
way of living, mr. Prince, you know, I'm just you
know about of money in the world could have could have done for you on your birthday. So very true now but seriously
my happy birthday, you know you you seem like you're doing your you're getting younger every time we say every time we talk to you overall mate, we just we just just walk pleased to see you and placed in place that you've intended that that fourth chapter thank you Matt. It's very kind and appreciate
their worries. I might give you a hug and a
screen before we get David into tears.
Let's move on into some car update.
Scotty do we'll start with you. Your first one on tonight.
Same thing at home was first one.
That's that's rare. It is right?
Usually, I see the, see the message pop up and I'll just Mosey on over and turn me laptop on Cara.
I don't really have anything actually not much in the way of cars. I think the only thing kind of
Carolina's. I watched the formula ones that
you enjoy seeing kado enjoying his 18 million dollars a year.
Just to sit there. Maybe it's pretty good.
It's not bad, not bad, it's too chill.
Yeah, I haven't haven't done anything since since last weekend. The cars are just being seeing
their undercover in that and just yeah, concentrated on New house. That should be ready pretty soon
and that's it. Very close.
Got it, very excited will have to give you a nice and housewarming present. I think maybe I can talk
inspired one. It's a Magna, it'll be a magnet
to be a picture of us will, like, embroider ourselves onto each seat. So you can.
So you can, you can talk to us. Every retiree job.
You have. Let's go.
Very good, very good will move on to mr.
Prince update with you, my friend.
Well, as I mentioned before, I did take this tie off set, it always involves something care related.
So, I got the in one out, get that a bit of a clean and spent the day driving that around instead of my, my work car which was great fun. Well, it's good to give it a
run, thicker battery popped up no bites on it on the interwebs.
So I looks looks like I'm hanging on to that for the time being, which is completely fine with me.
Spent most of the weekend, so, Socializing.
But in between that actually organizing for this big event that we're running next weekend at Phillip Island, for the 50th anniversary of the release of the Honda Civic in Australia.
And actually this afternoon, I went and picked up my drive car for the weekend which isn't an F L5 type are certainly but it is.
It was, is it 2008 FD Civic sport manual, which belongs to one of our committee members Partners what wife And she's not able to get it down there because she's on the committee of organizing a weekend like, for the whole event.
So, she'll so I she said what do you want?
Take my car. I said, yep, I'm I was going to
say, sit eclipse at the moment, but I do have the wagon and the wagon was picked up on the weekend to to be trailer down at the event, which is good. So I'll take this Civic sport.
I had a Civic Sport and 08 for about six years so I think we bought it new and it was a great A car, I would like that's the the sport for door. So it's got the the K20 engine,
whereas the rest of the range, just had the 1.8 engine.
The meeting I'm of ET IL, and it was it's proved what basically 15 16 year old design, it's still really a sharp-looking car. Great interior.
I've forgotten how cool they were inside.
They were very ahead of their time that model.
Absolutely. And I think they made of mine
bought one, I helped him by one probably five years ago now, it paid like 864 it a tad. 170 or atk's in a manual sedan, it
wasn't a sport like yours as the normal vti or whatever.
But people thought he bought a new car, you know, because it was Friday. And oh, wow, Newcomb.
Would you pay because like a paid to eight thousand six hundred bucks for this thing. And they still couldn't believe
how nice it was for the money and even now if you see a well-maintained one, it's it is a really good thing.
I think they were underrated and undervalued that portal and interestingly a Always school will in those surveys around the safest secondhand cars. They're always in the top two or
three of the safest second-hand car.
You can buy like a kid starting out or something like that.
Yeah. If there's any, any one
criticism of it jumping out of anything else, the dashboard is so long and they're different drops away so quickly that you actually can't really see it. Front corners of, it's so slow
here down over the Bonnet. You know, to try load and find
this is Being a sport. It's got the body kit and stuff
on it too. So just thinking we could be
very careful with gutters and things like that that don't with that. But now it's a great little car
driver. Be the manual very rare V and
this one's done about 170,000 case, still drives great.
So it'll be very enjoyable weekend.
Absolutely sunroof. Open head.
You know how, like a sunroof. You like the sunroof?
Didn't like a sunroof. So, yeah, I'm looking forward to
having that for the weekend. So we've got about 30, sorry
guys. No, sorry.
I was just going to say we've got about 30.
Cars coming down so far, and older Australia is supplying.
Some cars, which will be great as well from an NFL five to the original 7ee. Well, I think they say to submit
Corrections, 75, don't tell them going.
So, first year in Civic, but they've got a lot of little island grew three-door, manual that they're bringing down for us as well. So be nice to cook in the first
one with the light with the most recent ones.
That'll be cool. That'd be awesome mr.
Bunting. Hello?
That will continuing on from that, I am The driving Civic down for the big event. A 2001 that I sold to one of my
clients who I know him as well. I've taught him to cars over the
years and I rang him because I saw a lot of time, not that long ago, you probably remember be talking about it.
I rang him and said, hey, we don't have one of these models.
Can I borrow that back for the weekend of?
They'll give you whatever? I'm driving.
He said, yeah, no drama. Absolutely fine.
And I was like, great so that that plugs one hole in the Civic history line after models that we didn't have an example of, but it could because I was like, Yeah, I know where there is one cool. We can get that was just going
to say David you know giving you all the love of sort of Mercedes-Benz and you've never owned one in sort of always wanted a bit of a Benz. If they've been sitting here act
and your love of convertibles, it's just struck me.
Why haven't you owned a first-gen?
SLK, because that's a beautiful little convertible.
It's Ben's, it's hard. Tops off top.
It's very practical bit. Like the else you had.
You want Rougemont a bit of ground in terms of things, you like I was going to say more, you know, 124 convertibles a bit more bit. More mysterious.
Yeah. Like 30 grand and it's occasion.
Well, you know. Yeah, you're quite right.
I think, probably I painted far too many Interiors in SL cases where the paint balls out of them.
Yeah, they do an issue but that but once that's done, it's true.
I can do it. So I just thought I did just
one, there was one on Facebook Marketplace, not long ago down in Mornington and it was a really nice open almost like a peacock. Greeny blue color.
Yeah, nicely. That was cool.
I made it blue color because it was so many silver ones actually, exact that, if you can get even a white looks quite a striking. So a white, a blue.
I think I look hot in red like that to Michael red or the yellow. They did not that they look
really good in those, oh well I like it.
Video that silly me. I would definitely one of those
if the right one pill in front of me so they came out in 97 may be okay, 25 years up, there you go.
Yeah, really is. So kind of right color.
I reckon that's a bit of you for under.
You know it's sad 15. Gram, for example.
Good, good price. Good price range.
Yes, they go work on my BMW dealer and I haven't worked out who owns it. Someone who works there.
There's a beautiful, not sure of the name of the color, but it's almost our lapis blue E36 convertible.
They thought the 30s were with the one to get, you know, with the chrome bumpers and stuff. But this thing has aged pretty
gracefully and it actually looks beautiful in its blue with the gray lever. And I think a lot of us could
look very ratty because they were quite sticky and you know, Trims and letters and it all fades and falls off.
You know, they'll put together with to send clips and stuff.
But a good one, in the right color is still a nice looking thing. Yeah.
Was it a 328, right? Yeah.
Good engine in the 328. They go.
Well, so I must find out who went and have a chat to them about another car updates, big news.
Okay, I have taken a deposit on the 130i hatch was the people that message you on the show last week?
No, it was not. Okay, so that's right.
Someone did message me on it and want something.
There was one guy that came and looked it up but he had to sell his I like 30 and first he had an in class back.
Okay. Yeah.
So he's wanting to was one of these.
Go wanted to get back to it. One thing the alright because
dollars, you know, because he said I want I want to save dollars and also you so ticked that box but also still have something that's fun and it takes that box for you know, dollars Ben BMW don't really go hand in hand.
Well yes I mean he reckons the I30 n is worth about 37 and I had a look online and I think he's right.
It was a manual 56,000 K in a Fastback and I smile and I looked online with. Yeah that's about the money red.
I think it was red. Okay.
So you know jump out of that 437 and jumping to something for 30 more take and yeah there's a fair whack of saving there.
Any way that No, he wasn't one that bought it, although I took it offline and he messaged me straight away and said, I did you sell it because he was sort of wanting to sell his other car and then come back and grab it but I said, yeah, I did.
Sorry. But yeah, and if anything else
could Falls in my lap, it's all very nice people.
They came over. They really said that before.
It came up on Saturday for a look and they're a one-car family in their sort of just jumping.
Vaness, P20, Master like yours Medi.
The master version of the laser is R2 into 130 because he's had been as before and love the sixes.
And I always thought that car would go to someone who knows what it is. You're not I said that to him I
said look no one was going to buy this who's just after a little once threw his hat to run around.
And you know it's not that by oh it's got to be someone.
There's a I want to 130 and be. I want a man until 1:30.
And that's exactly the these people they they knew what it was and appreciated, what it was and Drop it, and yeah, it drives beautifully. So a good fit, a good feet.
Of course, I had to get another road you on it because the first one ran out. So I'm picking it up tonight, to
bring it home with that, and then it'll go to them.
And then I'm motoring around, I did get my Volkswagen multiband a registered. So, I'm motoring around in the
in the multiband, which on last Sunday, I went to a trash and treasure Market with my sister to sell a lot of That she has, and I took a few, you sundry items to sell, but I pulled the two middle seats out of the multiband and the little table that goes between them. So, it's just got the back
seats, right, push back on the rails.
And then, and then, this huge expanse in the twins line at the level. You could not get a better car
for what we were doing for the market.
You just pull up, open the twin sliding doors shove, shove shove shove drive off. Like, it was so it didn't take
any packing ability at all and you just shut and it's such a low floor, and the doors are so wide.
And it You can and you can walk through from the front to the back. And you know, you really you
really do, get an appreciation of how useful those things are.
So I mean, doing driving that around think it's a bit more economical than the Pajero. So I splashed out and filled it
up with diesel and no, I'll drive it till it runs out.
Yeah. Well, cells, or cell.
I don't want the other, you know, the other.
I did have a message from someone in Sydney.
And I stood, Ah, that's exactly what I want.
I just realized, you're in Melbourne and I'm in Sydney.
Oh, well, I can. You know, I'm happy to help.
Let me know how I can help if you buy it for the advertised price. I don't mind.
I'm driving it up there and flying home.
Hmm. So you know it's all possible
anyway in a very good for my friend who has a wholesale is it who's a wholesaler who I bought it off and he's got a proton eggs Aura? Would you trade?
The proton exhorter? And I'd like jokes and I was
like, I'll give you 1,500 for it.
It's actually the best one in Aurelia it's done, 22,000 K from new, it's black and it looks absolutely showroom and I just thought and he said, I'm having trouble moving it and I was like, well am not surprised because even I didn't know what it was. And, you know, we kind of know
most Carl's on this show, right? And I thought, if I've never
heard of it and didn't know what it was.
What the hell hope is anyone else?
But yeah. So I don't think anyone's going
to go looking for a proton eggs or It'll just you more someone stumbles on it and goes oh that's a bit, people-mover e, that's practical, and it's cheap.
And it's really low case and all, that'll do what I want.
But yeah, it's one of those classic cases of great condition great case but just not a desirable car.
Yeah. Only they bought it to run ago
instead. Oh imagine it with 22,000 case
on it or anything Japanese, you know, just Yeah, it's what it's just wrong, wrong car. It's like this old people that
buy retirement car and they cherish it.
They look after and it's beautiful its low mileage but it's Justin it's the wrong color or the wrong transmission or just a dag. You stick the base spec dagi car
like a pulsar, Victor Dougie sedan or something.
That's just not desirable really?
And you think God if you do only invested in a Mini Cooper S or a triple S pulsar Or something hot to start with.
And then you cherish it will then you've got an amazing piece of something that's very desirable balls.
Much quicker. Exactly.
Don't you know, you can't talk to you.
If you're about to retire by the top-of-the-line, cool colored version of whatever you're thinking and then cherish it and then it'll be cool down the track and worth money when it's called bit of a segue into my car.
Updates with the Lazy J. Alex, I do you like sigh?
Yes. Yes, I realize it now and so
he's top-spec those big. Do you like so much man in the
sedan in the sedan automatic 1.8 GA exercise on the came 1.0.8.
They had 1.6 in the lower ones incorrect?
Yeah, there's an imagine if P engine, which is actually believe it onto the same head, as the fs engine, which is on, which is in the to later. So bit of a useless Tip for
people don't if you're looking for a period.
But yeah, when I picked it up on Thursday, we picked up Thursday evening after work. I was kind of embarrassed
walking up in the C63 because I was just like, I'm pick it up a free card, a C63, I love that. It's so, I where the car was
wasn't it was in a, was in a retirement religion and I just always in science. We had to say, in my head.
I'm like if he sees the car be like it's not my It's not mine, it's not mine. I don't like Austin Powers
briefly when I went to buy my debts you cure a I was driving my S-Class and it's I'm sure I've said this before I put it right and and and I just changed jobs and she I think she thought I'd really hit hard times. And so I was like so excited
about the curare and as a great. Thanks very much and one
original owners, everything and said, I hope you need job.
Works out well and I think she really thought that I'd fallen on hard times now. Ironically, I have Because, you
know has 10 interest rates but yeah, the S-Class probably wasn't the best image. No.
Yeah, I was a bit embarrassed. I mean, like, as much as I enjoy
driving the cc3, for a week and bought a car that is I will get to that in a moment but I was super objects all over because it was excited for was dropping his bloody laser home.
So I got I go there and meet, I'm at my cat, the gate.
He's like I let you in and by this time the murk had gone away and I was like, you know, you know, Hopefully no one.
Nobody saw it here at but but nobody saw it.
Anyway, we walk in and it was just, I swear.
It was like one of those, all the pieces of the puzzle kind of put together because the lady who's giving the car to who gave the car to me. Her name is Norma.
And my grandmother's name was Norma, same name, and my grandmother loved my laser. She's your daughter.
She reckons. It was doing that, you know, the
most, the coolest little car. I owned.
I just was like, you know, it just it just felt like He felt right, you know, I mean like this car.
This car felt like right, it felt like it had to had to pause had to come home with me and so yeah, I get in there and Noah put on put on the yeah, little bit of a spreads and I'll be in a spread and grapes and a cup of tea and I had a cup of tea, as we're doing the paperwork, and have a look at the con and the things interior-wise mean, like, it's just Stunning needs a little bit of blood. Yeah, they'll bit of bumper
needs a bit of bar and he's fun of pottery Barn's.
Need to be done easy, the job, easy job.
I want to see if I can Source One at a wrecker in the same color, because a lot of them came in that Goldie champagne color, they actually damaged, or they just need paint.
The real one was pushed in, but I am on the weekend.
I got some hot water from the kettle and keep putting on and just got a metal rod from behind and just start prying it, you know, just out. It's a lot better than what it
was. It's not Perfect.
It'll need. I don't need, I don't need work
to get it fixed, but you can they are not, they're not, they're not this repairable. But so I will look at getting
them done in a few months time because I need to do a few things to at first because if she's had it serviced religiously all the time. Has been servicing three years
though because she hasn't driven the car.
It's just just kind of sad there, but it needs because it's 209,000 cage. But hasn't the timing belt done?
So you talking about water pump just to precautionary measures.
It's got a rocker cover gasket leak, but they're going to, they're going. Take the walk, a couple off
anyway when they do when you do the the talking about tools like just put any one of those on. So those are the has been to be
going tomorrow but they asked if we could graph a good bringing on Monday because it's a bit flat out and I was like that's fine. And then undo the roadworthy as
well but it's got four brand new tires, the batteries really good, everything else is fine. I tried to I suppose I said I
spent a little bit of time out in the week and I gave the vacuum you can tear a real nice clean and the in the Buddha really nice clean. It's it's all the spares are
there. Everything's there as the aircon
icy cold. It's a laser.
It's course work. Cause it's gonna work ugly.
So that the trans the transfer was great.
It was super smooth and kicked down really nice.
This was like, Yep. This is, this is drawn really,
really well that I've that and so, yeah.
All I did was all I needed to on or we're going to lose because the center caps on those as you know, with my one, they fade the, the Ford badge fired. So I had a, I want to set of
stickers for for my car because I screwed up, you, okay.
It's like a new. It's in it, but I bought it.
There's always like myself. I've got the most unsteady his
hand which is my right hand and I knew I'm going to screw it up but managed to get them done right and I put the other spare set on this car and it looked the right product that product, the rear bar looks a lot better. I mean it's not perfect, but
it's better. There's a little bit of a Nick
on the rear. Butley Bunch 7, get that PDR
because that doesn't, it looks like it could be just kind of just pushed out when I was put I had a spare set of sheepskin seat covers that been on to the front because it's full not a speck at. The points.
I wanted to keep it that way. Keep rolling with it.
Yeah, well yeah, that's always a role with the whole the whole Menace pick theme. So I put those seat covers on
there. What should I do to?
I think it would be one or two more things.
Be I want to give it a good wash this weekend because I didn't go to get a chance to give it a wash on the weekend.
It was just too hot in and I just was had a few things too many to do. So didn't get around to it but
driving really well. Stephen Pam seems to be really
loving it. Stuff loves it.
She reckons. It's a cracking little guy.
She's like, it's just, it's just so easy.
In go to driving Chen and I was like those like to in comparison to the old blue Cruz 1.8, automatic that she had.
She's like this is a rocket ship compare that like to fly as compared to compared to that. So they are very happy stairs
are very happy with the car. So I'm really, I'm really,
really happy with that. So yeah, Goodwin I think on my
end lately making bricks, make that just that back on that topic of putting on a spread. It's like, what have you gotten
with a car? And I remember with my city, I
got a big jar of marmalade that the The it all in our berry, you know. Don't get it with one of the
good job as a marmalade, you know.
So another batch and I got a wonderful job.
I think it was orange marmalade so that was nice but I'm getting plenty of other cars. I bought new, you know, you've
been given a bit of a bit of this or of that Wicked.
I can't remember exactly. But that one sticks in my mind
is I picked up someone contacted the club years ago and they had a similar similar story deals Maddie.
Their mum had a Indiana In 74 City catch that they bought you and had the years and years and years.
Automatic battery was flat because it adjusts its set in their garage at the retirement home.
So when you burst into life and an offer drove and he said I'll look, I left a couple of things have kind to bit of paperwork and stuff. He said, I'll grab that for you
that he didn't look far from you.
So call past his house and he said, I'd this is a supplement and it was an envelope from Honda in Japan.
With a little string, tie up, you know, anything on the on the, whether the envelope closed and start and open it up and it was a letter to Pivot, to the, to the lady that had bought the car thanking her for buying a Honda vehicle.
Yeah. If you've shown me this letter,
Japan, like this is how like, this is, how Honda were branching out. So Honda Japan.
Rotor, a personalized. Letter and enclosed was a 25th
anniversary booklet of the Humvee.
Company. Oh my god, I've never seen one
before the Laughing. It just absolutely no.
Thanks, I'm sure he's trying to have that.
Well, that's certainly didn't go with the car at that remains in my Archive of fabulous things, but I don't know marmalade but a very cool there. Marmalade that's correct.
Spread it on toast, but I've seen it through to the public relations. People at Hunter Australian
said, you guys need to lift your game.
Mmmmm, you know, like look this is what they were doing, you know, 25. But the letter for buying one
their cars. Yeah.
When you think of how many Hunters are sold around the world every day now, like all through America and Japan to some but yeah, they do it now. No, I was just back then
slightly less volume and a fresh market, you know, pneumatically exactly amazing. I do my dad bought the
territory, brand new track in 2006.
And I mean you guys have been my dad, he's a bit of a ball breaker, right? So, He he was like to him
because I live in this area, they had seen a little accessories and I had began T model cars and things and I was like yeah. Maybe me as I was looking at the
model cars. You know what I'd like to do is
like, so I'm spending all this money on a car.
You going to throw in one of those hairs like 90 because like now you are it's like Nana. We can't he's like no you are.
And this argument ensued between them for like a good half an hour like that that girl that they're going tangents at him back to the car and bring them back to the car.
They picked up the case. Like here you go up in the boot
now. As soon as I can, I made him,
give it to you. So that was, that was good.
But yeah, that's a really cool story.
David like that, I didn't even know.
They would have done it. That's unbelievable.
I never would have ever imagined.
It was a thing with the person was definitely a thing.
So, yeah, that's pretty much my car updates gentleman update on the, on the new laser, the new, the new, the new laser to the family, which is, which is, which is really good.
We're a family now every time I think of like you know the laser family I think of that ad on the 2.4 a yeah.
You know. The yeah it's like you're like
two point three kids and he's like yeah that's right.
So yeah. What's that topic for tonight?
Matthew all top-of-the-line gentleman is an interesting one because they've just announced the new Wheels car of the year for this year. And I was trying to do a bit of
a reflection on some of the previous winners of the canyon.
We've mentioned them before but we haven't really done a nice reflection on them in terms of basically kind of a retrospective of looking at them now and saying, oh yeah, that's that's one of those ones that you probably wouldn't buy.
I mean there's there's some absolute gold in there.
Like there's, you know, the original MX-5 Ellis for hundreds and you know, the Triple-S NSX like stuff.
That was just iconic from that era.
We're just still good today but then you get look.
Some cards. You like what don't know what
they were thinking putting that as buscar, the and wheels to be fair cop, a lot of flak for their choices of Wheels, Carly here. Every like all that can't
believe that one, you know. It's a bit like the Triple J top
100 like all can't believe that one but this one is, but this is obviously this year it's quite quite a big prestigious award one of the European iangelling on gentleman.
Because I like because obviously it's it's, you know, they have just announced today. I think they announced it today.
I'm from from memory I came up. What can I Haz is one currently?
I'm not telling you because it's a part of the quiz question so I do. Okay.
So evident that I don't know, I haven't read it or looked at it, but looking back on some history.
I'll give you guys a link to a to a page everyone up until 2022. Which is good because it doesn't
really have talked about them before I think on some episodes, but it's quite as stringent judging criteria.
Like, you know, it's not just a personal, I reckon you're sorry.
Reckon that like they do break it right down into a lot of categories and, you know, there's a point system and so the winner is it's sort of Fairly judged I feel, mmm.
I mean they do it according to cost and use.
Yeah and and yeah the way they do it like the you know the Mercedes S-Class wanted in 1981. I think it wanted again in 99.
W220 like that one. I had but it's You know, it's
feasible for a very expensive car that's Out Of Reach of most people to win just as it is, you know, a cheapie to win.
And they've been plenty of Cheaper cars that have taken home that prized. Absolutely.
And I I'm not like you guys. I'm a big fan of Love Like You.
Chief doesn't always have to mean cheap, you know, he came in cheerful. Yeah.
Correct, you know, I know I get more, you know, not excitement.
But more interesting like a To keep a Canter than I would like a bazillion dollar super car because it's one it's affordable and to I can thrash the crap out of it everywhere and it be more fun to you know, on a daily basis.
Thank you, Mary. I'd love to have a McLaren your
whatever whatever. Which would you ever want to get
could be but seriously can you can use my training that as you can in a decanter on a daily basis?
No. So let's go through them
gentleman. Looking back.
You can just flicking through someone from the 60s.
I like, that's pretty cool. I think it's the longest
continuously awarded Car of the Year award in the world.
I'm pretty cool. Okay.
I think it's Yeah, I think that's actually an actual fact, not just something I've made up on the spot.
Well, I think we should go through them and have a little discussion on each. I think that's fine.
Well, yes, well, I don't really know too much about, like, I've seen them. I know a little bit about them,
but the runner eight, I don't know.
If you've ever owned one Edward, you've owned many, many renowned, no 10, which is that sort of the next iteration of the eight but the renter eights or renters of that era were, you know, very well built very robust, little car.
Ours, the 8 and the 10 were rear-engined which is, you know, maybe questionable handling in some people's eyes but they were very well-respected little cars, you know.
So yeah. Solid simple.
Nice. Wet sleeves sort of engines that
ran for years and years and years and yeah they were good cars. So even now and they're not
worth bucket, loads of money and eight or a ten, you know subsequently. But the gordini models of
certainly Got a big following. And even the normal ones are a
cracking classic car. You know, I would I would
happily on one of those as would as with many car Enthusiast.
They were a good car. You know, hindsight is not sort
of showing that they're a bad car in any way.
Yeah. Would you agree with that David?
I would agree with that. Certainly.
I think the 10 probably wasn't even better carbonate in a lot of ways because yeah, probably was it was more modern world where it didn't quite have the nice.
Look at the 88th had the little round headlights a bit narrow and what-have-you urgent. Attend had the funny-looking
Square headlights on and it was a bit more you couldn't tell if it was coming or going, you know, it was that sort of a look but yeah, very endearing endearing little cars that coped quite well with you know, Australian roads and conditions and things like that. And yeah, very different story
Renault in the 1960s and 70s compared to say Renault in the 80s and 90s. You know, the old school 60s,
rhinos were we were good things moving on so I can t remember something a bit different, which is Is the most 11:00.
Now, it would, I believe you have only one of these.
I have had a Mars 1500, but I don't think I've had an 11:00 but they are essentially the same family of cars.
He had the 1102 1315 hundred, which were basically sort of like a four-door mini. It's all mean be engine.
A series running gear. It's the transverse, you know,
so the many layout of transverse, front-wheel-drive, they are a bit. I mean, he's came out in 59
overseas, and sort of 61 here. There are a bit newer than that.
They're like 64. I think the 11:00, I come out.
So it's basically like a slightly bigger many and we all know how that sort of went transfers front-drive.
Great packaging, not overly expensive.
Good handling, pretty robust Little Engines in them, you know, you had to Lucas electrics and stuff like that, but I sort of look back at them. And to me this is a series
they're sort of like the Mazda 3 of their day.
You know, they were kind of everywhere and in you know, pastel green and gray and bought by Bullet.
I sort of young people or Granny's without too much money as their last car, and a lot of them have survived reasonably well, and a few cows with the beach sea and floor shift.
That's right. Bench seat in the front end and
the floor shift. Yeah you'd sort of if you're in
the middle in the front you know about the floor shift I suppose.
But yeah really and I still I think there are quite a good-looking little car, they're a handsome little thing.
Hmm I think was pretty much a laydown busy really given that they were essentially affordable mini I mean the mini was.
Yeah. Yeah.
It's all around the world and was the first class lascar almost really. Yeah.
And they had quite a big boot and and because of that front drive layout, the rear legroom in them was was way better than you would imagine. And the Austin, 1802 came later
was a bigger version. Again, the land crab, you know,
they were huge in the back because they're at, they were just a massive front drive transverse version of the 11:00.
So, yeah, that family of As back then was quite revolutionary and you know that there was this famous sticker on the back of the 1100s that you know floats on fluid which was the Hydra lastik suspension which to ask about that?
Yeah some Not all men he's had at mines got it, you know, they ran it for a few years and they went back to the rubber cone because it's probably cheaper to produce or what have you but it's quite quite robust that Hydra lastic setup and the 1100s were known for its oh quite a good ride and Again, a bit revolutionary for they were. So I would put a tick against
that I'd say, they're at their, a good little machine and Innovative with the suspension are absolutely correct.
There wasn't much else like it around it.
The time really? I think still fairly leaf spring
issues times. I think most other stuff.
Yeah, it was a bit Antiquated compared to that.
Yeah. Hey guy, where's this?
Most of three of its day. That's three of us.
That, that's what we can, we can reflect organize them as.
Yeah. I'll just share a few Foods
next. I think, xp's and XP was 65,
which was, which was Ford's come back car after they would getting canned food, not being robust.
They were though they kind of redesign the suspension for that. Yeah, handle the strain
conditions, and then it one Wheels car of the year, then, X.
Our Falcon after that. Yeah, in Crozet, ve Valiant.
Yeah. Which was right guys.
Think of evilly. I haven't seen one it.
I was going to go on in years, but I always kind of liked the Via Valley and I thought it was a bit of a side, a bit of a soft spot for the black car. Quite a handsome car and it'll
go ahead and the slightly became available in the video improve.
Be sure to slide six Motors will well-regarded.
I think very good. Yeah.
Strong Motors and the Safari Wags of caused to.
Yeah. Nice.
Looking car was waiting rooms. Like 68 was the HK manaro.
I mean, that's a collectible thing, isn't it?
Beautiful looking, man? All right.
Yeah, lovely lines to it. I mean, pretty simple
Mechanicals is that aren't revolutionary there, but but yeah, the lines of that car, a pretty Timeless the, It's a good-looking car. I like the gills and the online,
in the, in the front. Yeah, it gives the Gap.
Yeah, it looks. That's true.
That's true because everyone thinks about the GTS, obviously that had the girls and this and the black stripe.
And Yeah. Houndstooth Truman all that they
were available as in the base spec, as well.
Get a basement. I ride like three speed down the
tree manual. Exactly exactly painted painted
painted wheel pumps with with the Chrome hubcap on the wheel hubs account. So yeah I mean when was the last
time you sort of the original base?
Expect men are oh my goodness think there was an article in Survivor car. Australia, mag about one and I
was a bit. Yeah, I sort of knew that
existed but Not really in rating that I was like, oh yeah.
Base model, train Latoya, interesting.
And you could get a base for the six as well for memory, right?
Like you get them with a six-cylinder.
Oh yeah. You know, they're all one, never
get a fall in that car was always or six or a night, wasn't it? No.
No. I think it was just six has no
good night in the 1969 was the LC Toronto which was yeah, I'm much better Toronto. Than previously produced so that
they really came back with that. The me it's a me a bit of a
bucket of shit. Like terrible panel gaps, not
very well put together not the best holder.
Never to be churned out. Opposite steering wheel.
So you know it's got a following now, they're worth big money.
Now I'm not questioning that. But as a car I don't like to me
it wasn't amazing. 10. 12 1912 Yeah.
How can you how can you hide? And I'll say Tehran or lava
radar. 12 it with us for people in the rain or twelve was an
ancient forest in cart great suspension.
You know, it wasn't new medical hydrolyzed to grow anything fancy. It was a really comfy
suspension, very comfy seats refined wet sleeve.
Engine longitudinal front wheel drive, which was unusual for the time, huge Boot and quite good ground clearance today, the most of them were running. The certainly, the later ones
running Weber carbs. A standard, some guards are
standard, they sort of had a bit of rally pedigree to it.
Ivo, numerous numerous 12 and I've liked every single one of them and everyone that I know he's had a 12 has been, I was a cracking car Old Reliable, quirky looking, but if you buy another one, I haven't driven one.
Oh, really? Yeah.
You never drive like a 12. If a good girl came across my
path, I'd be very tempted. There's always thought it looked
like a cross between Dolomite Sprint with the front end.
Yeah. A little And like a piece of any
seeks with the back. Yeah, the back order.
Yeah. So it was kind of like kind of
that those two cars put together and it kind of works.
Yeah, it's there. An endearing.
Little car. Got a poster in my house.
I'm staring at it right now. With one, two, three, four,
five, six of them from like a dealership launch day in all the different colors. So I definitely I think I've
owned probably 12 or 13 12 over the years and yeah, that's a tick me of working. The wagon.
I did like the way I think. My number was probably a good
prettier than the city and I think, yeah, I think so too.
Good. Car, 71 Valiant charger.
I'm a big charger fan. I like charges.
Yeah, a charger. Probably one of the coolest
coolest car ad campaigns ever. Absolutely true.
Well, built for the reliable good Hemi, you know, tick tick tick. Yeah, everywhere like like
differently. So he's been on a few times a
day man who takes his treasure. Everywhere he goes, he gets
people giving him the piece. Yeah, yeah.
And he's like, these are young people doing it?
Like, like they, they didn't even know what I mean.
Even born, when I think was a, it's just synonymous with, with, with, with, with charger, which it has cool 72.
No 1173. Now Rob's not here to defend it,
but it's the Leyland piece everything, it's which lets us it was a good car. But they had issues at the
beginning, I think. Yes, it was the concept was
good, the size and even The Styling, and, you know, be controversial, but quite handsome in many ways.
Very, you know, huge boot. As we know, the ad campaign of
fitting, the 44 gallon drum in it and running, you know, robust engines, sort of the six or the Leyland eight, the 4.4 liter
Rover V8. I think it had a lot going for
it. The execution just wasn't up to
scratch initially. And that killed it.
You know, just got this reputation for being crappy Leyland Bill and that was the end of it.
You know. It really never recovered from
that. Do you think now, what with
knowing what we know about that car?
And yeah, the time he copped a lot of, let's be honest.
Crap, but looking back now and after speaking with Rob, who's are numerous of the numerous ones we still earned his first one, which was his first car, he swears by that car.
And, you know, in he reckons is still one of the best cause he's ever had, I think Classic case if there were good ones like the magnets we talked about out there with some great Monday cars and there was some Friday cars and some people just were plagued with horrendous issues, but others others had a great run. And yeah, I think if you can
look past the stigma, they weren't a bad car.
I'm not in love with the look of them personally, but yeah, I don't know. Do what did they?
Yeah, I don't know, compare it to.
What else was out at the time and it probably looks quite favorable. Well, okay, Scotty David and all
this tick or no tick that car. Personally I'm going to go now I
tick but I think it does have Merit.
Okay you just get Rob's not here.
I'm going to go no tick as well only because I don't think actively go out looking to buy one now I wouldn't think it was I think I think it's interesting that I wouldn't go hunting one down. Yeah it's interesting.
Having a little read about it. That they only gave it to the V8
version. Hmm and then it's like and then
it's the wrong. Rules now that it has to be all
the models. You can't choose a specific.
Okay, one more. So yeah.
They give it to the V8 one. Yeah, probably know tick.
Okay. But by now for the Peace Center
is the VW Passat, which was a the first water-cooled front-wheel-drive Volkswagen that was sold in Australia.
I think what this means is a basically Yeah.
Yeah. I've actually never seen one of
these on the road in Australia. Like, I've got one.
Okay. Well, there, ya know what they
are? I know you are exactly what they
are. If it's gonna be like, cool.
But but, but I've never seen one in the flesh.
And I don't know why, because I'm assuming, because they would, they would have sold it, you know, a fair amount of them being being Ozzy, was he made. But yeah, interesting.
Calendar, the three models there was a two-door with a boot.
And then there's a four-door with a boot and a wagon. 1.5
nearly cars. The illnesses that we got into a
locally produced. Oh, remember that came out.
I was really excited for them. I thought they were really quite
contemporary looking at the time, you know, especially compared to the beetle, you know, that was still chugging away. This was a totally different
direction for Volkswagen and they very good Marketing in the time. Yeah, I Give it a tick on.
I did like that the sets. I like the look of them.
I think they're a handsome car and they came in some cool colors like the mustard yellows and blues and oranges and you know, vitamin C orange of that sort of thing.
Our son comes the Jacksons involved as can be exceptional for the same time. I don't think they were very
good car, you know, in terms of mechanical body Rusty's that, you know, I just think know there's a reason wiper sets, aren't we? With money, they're just not
that good. So good, isn't it?
I'm but not good now. Yeah, in in, in the, when they
first came out, there was a TS, you could, by which we had to call for work, became the gulf engine, the 1.6 engine run the
1.5 and Recaro seats. The standard, hello?
Quite quite a nice little performance fear of brilliant, all, yeah. Warmer variant than the basic,
if you're not, you know, it's a pretty good little starter classic or a, not an expensive. The classic to have around, but
as a car you soon there's not a heap to recommend it.
Now, dude, introduces to to the dashboard construction of paper mache race Gulfs and known for the 924 Porsches and perceptible hence, it was basically not even the strongest paper mache, see more like crepe paper is very much, the same.
It was a hollow Dash so thin and the Australian something just destroyed them, you know, that they Literally would have crumbling cavities out of all the dash has car would still run beautifully. Put the dashes were destroyed,
we want the Australian cars to did suffer Quality quality group grunt Gremlins and like the golf probably a lot the gulf a they all were fully loaded from the city, seven model you and that cover of do Rupert. Got, you know, german-built and
really you know, quality sort of card the same price as what the early cars were. I'm gonna go know, for me.
Nope, tap Now Del yes, it's getting your the decision maker here on the decision maker. Not, here's a bit of a 475
holding 5tx. Gemini, I love Gemini's.
I've always had a soft spot for Geminis.
I mean, I came home from the hospital in a Gemini.
It is, you know, what one was Rose?
TA or no one was a tea tea. TC TC in that coma green tea.
See yep, that's okay. It stays nice.
First car. I like that model.
I think there are good looking car.
They're reliable. They were good thing.
Yep, give that a tick. So obviously there are joint
venture with Isuzu. So, the early cars they even had
a hold a nice suzu badging in between the tail lights and they did a diesel version. I Susie diesel In which I like,
and it wasn't until 81 at. Well, I know.
But still, we had good luck. Bye.
But then by then, the whole range was sort of being considerably outclassed by a lot of front-wheel-drive, check time in 70 75. You know, that was a good Gemini
era. The Coop, a was, especially
pretty little town. Yeah, gorgeous little girl.
Those sick tick tick. Yep, I completely agree. 76 was
the gulf. So we do you come back again
with The refinement that they basically said no we're going to bring out and I'm going to scoot small car which I believe was supposed to be the replacement for the beetle but it never has been the beetle gate. It require if it quite did that.
Well that's like the Porsche 928 was meant to replace the 911 you know and it's rough. I like the look of the first
golf's my family friends of ours had one in green and I had a model. The same that the match Box
model, expand their yeah. With the roof rack on top of the
schemes and I really like the stubby arse and the hatch and the stubby from the angry little eyes, the inset into the grill.
So the looks-wise I liked it, I think they were plagued at all the same quality issues is the per set, but as a looking car, I think it's a lot cooler than a purse at.
So I'm going to give it a tick. Yes, yep.
First and goal, finally, like a will skip over 70.
Seven because we know what they was going to say now getting is the first gen Honda Accord. Which basically took everything,
it was BMW rivaling. It says it says here in the in a
little glow about about it. Robert and quality Superior,
front-wheel-drive Dynamics ultra-efficient, cvcc engine able to we do, you know, I think I think well-deserved we know so this Japanese car to win carry the, you know, I didn't count the gym and I as a Japanese car even though it was You're not going to was in t car design. It was a bit of a bastard, child
of everywhere. It was, it was once it was
Japan. It was.
Yeah. So yeah, it was a teak, a
project basically, the only words.
Sorry. Daddy, did you go?
I was just going to say it was also the first Honda to win, carry the year in Australia, and yeah, the first Japanese cartoon should we can carry through with that was so incredibly refined and compared to a lot of competition.
And, you know, it's just straight ahead.
That's the way, the switchgear, felt way, the door handle felt the way. The Tacho needle was flush
against the face of it and just smooth precise, and find is how I would describe him holding diagram, which showed you with the tail light Globes around, or the hatch was a joke doors.
Yeah, service indicated is that, which is U 0 in with the key to that underneath the vehicle. Very, you know, for 1977 like
pretty Pretty cool stuff and I will rip out.
I mean, I'm rusted, that was it they would like anything of that era. They just rotted away in the
roof channels and bottom of the doors and guards and all of that. That was that, that was a
weakness of a lot of cars of that era.
You don't think you can blame that on the record mechanically.
They'll very very strong. Mmm.
And as you say refine, I had a affiliate Corolla, which was my first car, and I remember testing driving a chord in. 81.
That was the first record I drove and it was like a rotary compared to the my Corolla like. Yeah.
Yeah so smooth way. The engine just just spun
beautifully like to drive beautifully box.
Yep. Big tick tick.
Yes. Tick tick. 78 was a very
important young because the VB Commodore which it was a big car for a stray. Leah.
I mean obviously it's the Commodore is now synonymous.
With the Australian, but this was based off the the opal, they can not a Cadet opal record record that it lets the word obviously designed for a free showing additions and you know, in most Parts it drove really, really well, you know, really, really good car in terms of. In terms of that first, one's
always. I mean, the first of anything
really has an issue to be fair, and they were known pretty quickly, but I think a very integral car and I think deserving winner, I personally think it was Revelation dynamically for an Australian car.
In fact the steering was so shy but it's there's a myth going around that the VC moved. The success of the VB actually
they had to dull it down a bit. It was too sharp.
That baby was 22. Good handling a for the farm.
And the VC didn't handle as well.
If they sort of doubled it down a bit more play in the steering wheel. Really?
Yeah. Other that we had one brand-new,
my dad picked one up in 78 as a big company car and it was like the coolest thing. In the street, it was amazing.
Even though was the base model Blue on Blue, lots of blue vinyl in that car, but appalling build quality things would settle off it as a drug dealer, right? I will remember that, but I did
have some driving lessons in that car so I remember it very fondly, I would tick I would choose an SLE 4.2 in probably
Sage. Green with the beige interior,
they had a lovely note, those those are there's really really nice bubble and the isil. He's had the wipers on the
headlight because life is very European, very this is 1978.
So I mean going from a Kingswood, you know, as the big Ozzy Holden into that is really a massive, massive jump because if you don't keep keep going and you'll do yeah, 279.
Yeah, another another 18 months but that was pretty much the replacement for it with the Commodore.
Okay, yeah. So that was a huge jump in terms
of size and European influence and handling as you saying all those things. I think for me personally it's a
cross because I don't think they're a very good car but for the time if you look back link item was a very good car.
So I think it's probably personally across but I can, it's definitely has Merit and you know, Spawned a whole, the whole of the 80s pretty much. Hmm, I think tick all around 79
with hell no 11, the lemon 1 1980.
Now we're getting into some more modern stuff is the Mazda 323 from real drop the front wheel drive.
It's basically what the first general laser was based off at the, put a laser plug in there. But yeah, Chris Hanlon classy
design. I thought they were good looking
car though. I mean there were very simple
but their work. Ellie get everything, like the
the lights were flush with the grill, you know?
The the Bonnet open backwards, which I thought was really sad.
Always feels very European that doesn't see me.
And yeah, I think, I think personally good car, but what do you think, fellas? I like them.
Yeah, yeah, take for me. Yeah, easy, easy to creamy very
people who carry my life in that I got my license in that. 1980s
it through 23. And I went with the driving
school because they had ever known of an atmega through history of the newest, coolest thing on the blog and yeah I got my license in that car. I've got mine in a pulsar,
Vector sedan Triple-S. Now that was a driving guys car
but it had the Triple-S manual or not because of course I was learning manual, no question about that.
And it was the black Gray sort of to time the Triple-S badging and I thought it'd be cool. You're funny story buddy.
I've got my passed my driving test in a Nissan Pulsar as well.
Thank you very much, really. Yeah, this is what something out
of it than when pulsars are gone down there that row.
What did you do? Last one was a Mazda 6.
Okay. All right, luxury car, nice car
sharing. Yeah, she just she hadn't had a
falafel. So you know down off Jesus would
have been like 04 05. And then was pretty much brand
new. Hello.
Pass and get my license in that and it's six.
Pick is what it looks like to call this impulsive.
My brother end up doing is testing three years later and the day before the day or two before the test, he was doing a one last driving lesson and he was sitting at a set of at a intersection and he got rammed up the ass.
And so he had to end up using my laser aside, to in the test Yeah it got rammed up the backside real hard and basically yeah wanted the car with that it was still was still going like a fix it and now these guys got something else now.
But yeah there was that same car and we all had to complain about how bad the gearbox wasn't that guy.
It divides. It had the you would go into
reverse it was but yeah, 1981 Goodyear very not say this Ben's. 6s clouds. Yeah, it's just that kind itself
is. I mean, it's just an icon, isn't
it really? Like, like everybody knows what
that I like for me. When I picture it, when I
picture a Mercedes, a picture, three cars, a picture of a 12-6, I picture, I'm a 2001 and I picture a r129, like they're the three that always only for you. It might be a pagoda and stuff
but those are the three for me that I guess because I know growing up and seeing seeing more than you, sing a lot of those on the road. What's the quintessential 80s,
dictated Mercedes? It was in every movie through
the Yankees, if you'd like me to sell the bad guys, always had s classes and yeah. Brilliant car in many, many
ways. So hindsight, you know, I we
with age and what we know now are you, I would definitely say it's 82 day because mirror J, the Supercar, the JV chimaera.
Now David is a Staunch defender of these cars but with stairs reason towards the end of their life they kind of got them right? But they weren't they weren't a
good car. They just yeah went great.
Again the build quality, let me down a lot of ways.
They were definitely Monday cars and definitely Wednesday card or Friday cause political world. Yeah they were good ones and bad
ones unfortunately and it was a bit hit and miss which one you got. Again the wagon was was a really
interesting thing that was actually So the camera was off.
The was General Motors, J car. And again, like the Gemini been
taken out of there are sold internationally in different with lots of different badges on them.
Everything from Cadillac to our opal, to Vauxhall to everything.
The wagons are actually designed in Australia, so that was a totally Australian design, and that was used around the world and like the, Citroën DS had the bumper bar attached to the, the tailgate. So when a Target and actually
came up Up, have you had a really low flat for?
Loading floor was very Innovative but they don't crowd though. David like that.
Yeah. I feel like Australian designs,
it's doing well. Doing good on the had a good go
there. Yeah.
I can't give it to you though. I suppose.
I think it had some Merit, like you say, but I can't give it a tickets across from me. That's Cody.
Yeah, big cross. Yeah I think it's iconic in as
much as when you took burials carry the year, people say old camera was Gary Vee that's feeling when they go to as being the worst of all of them. Exactly exactly. 83 it was a
Supercar. 83, is a good one for tell, stammers the 626 they
shared the this is the front driving till 60s correct?
Yeah, I'm basically they were they took down a lot of cars to be that the real real good. Stronger position, Toyota Supra,
BMW 3 Series Audi 100. And basically yeah, it's a big
it is in that in that list but the Telstar 66 good tick tick, interesting. That it was a jewel in our chose
to me how much more, how much more similar the Telstar was to the best version? Yeah.
You've been because in 1980 was only 23. 23.
Wasn't the 323 laser laser. Yeah.
Yeah to it was obviously more closely related, which is interesting because in a few years time we wins it again but again both of them combined us. So 84 is a car that I hold close
to my heart and Mitsubishi, Nimbus, I used to be, I thought that was so cool back in the day because we still get picked up and it was a revolutionary car. It was a really cool car and,
you know, I think I think they've got a 4G 63 in there as well, from a memory like or a variation of it.
Scotty that they'll make you happy but yeah for me too.
Yeah, yeah. In terms of packaging costs, you
know Revel different family. What?
Our absolute tick. Yeah, it takes everything that
will scare. The year is looking for
absolutely. And I didn't have families.
The Mitsubishi number that the state was awarded the parody of I can remove my wife coming out and psychology.
You see what? One carry, the you Mitsubishi
number at this lovely honey. Thank you.
But we all know from our good friend.
Mr. Andrews worth. His love of the Magna and we
know from Allen that the magnet is the the solution to the financial crisis that a lot of people are finding themselves in these days. But yeah, the motor itself was
quite the car when it came out. It was a big deal again, like
every other Caillou really wanted issues, but they kind of nailed it towards the end and I think they produce on okay, kartik for me, this girl. Absolutely.
What if big few years makes everything out to a Woods for Mitsubishi, they would have been very happy over at Toms, Lee Park in Adelaide. We'll put it this way.
The 80s was virtually besides the Commodore and come here are surprisingly was Japanese except for and and the and the and the S-Class was virtually run by that run by the Japanese.
It was absolutely 86 Ward withheld. 87, here's a good one.
Prelude all Wheels. Yeah, I love these cars.
It was just, my mom told me the story about her, sister's boyfriend had one break. Brand-spanking-new.
Which would have been a hot car back in the day.
Yeah. She's like, it was such a nice
kind of going and I was like, yeah, that would have been that would have been a really nice car back then.
Still is a nice car today. I think they've aged really
well, and I think it was, and I still think most of the ones that are on the road of, still quite good.
So, yeah, I yeah, always had a soft spot pop-up headlights.
I mean, this thing's was Carly, you my rules very nice, very, very nice, except beautiful. Originally It was in the club of
those cars and, and whenever they're about on show young, people just always remember them fondly, so no, they are clear.
I feel lucky that I got to have driven one a few times before.
So, really nice car beat some stiff competition in lays its four-wheel drive. Turbo BMW 735i in the Toyota, a
double oven MR2. That was the winner. 1988 was
the VM Commodore. This was their second generation
Commodore the big body. Amador it.
Beat the 5 series and Honda Civic to your horror mr.
Merton. But, um, Important car.
I wouldn't say the best Commodore know why I think of the in Commodores. I think of the executive, the
base model on the 14 inch wheels, with those big flat disc, hubcaps and Ray bumper bars, and horrible plasticky vinyl fabric in crummy fabric Interiors in them and the dash which is terrible and I would stay When I was a little bit of care of the year, I just thought from going from the was the video was the one before that, that wasn't it to the v in.
I thought the veil was the better car to be honest.
I'm going to say that, you know, I've been in both and being able to drive both and Vol is was way better.
Yeah, ven. When I hopped in it, Dad had it
for not too long and oh yeah. Yeah.
Today you know, halfway desirable I would have thought but you know, they sold truckloads of them very big you know in the rental market and the obviously in the business market and reactivity cars was booming.
Yeah. True true.
There was that but they're not not my favorite I just got to work like just big and bulbous and like the wheels never looked like they fit properly in the in like the no sir Prince lot of the guards. They just didn't look like, you
know, look like a nice came by the same token.
The EA came at the same time, right?
And all the people hate the air but EA, but interior, yze a zipper a bit nicer. I like every time I hope, every
time I've been to a VN and I've been in many VMS, don't ask why that? Yeah, better bad life decisions.
I'm only going as in this red wagon that this, this, this family, I used to know, I used to have and I was just like, it was just miserable. It was dreary, the Plastics were
horrible, like the cluster on. It was just like two
semicircles. And it was, it was just, it was
just not a nice place to be. It is rough.
I never found, I never was in one that felt smooth to trolls like that was rough. Yeah, it felt like you could
feel every vibration from the engine.
Like they felt, they felt really kind of.
Yeah, which is, which is weird because like, you know, I do, I try to explain this to, to one of the guys I work with, who's got So he's going to be PSS and I'm like vpss IRS.
It's a bit of it's a better car than it began.
But, you know, if you hopping like that to like let's say the EA for its time in the air was so much, the engine was so much more smoother and I just just a car that would one would win Wheels car of the year being. So just rough and guts I felt
about yeah. Rob's not that's probably why
they realized the error of their ways in 1909 and awarded it to the MX-5. Which yeah in itself is one of
the probably the most like one of the Iconic cars ever made.
I think I think it can deserve that Accolade and absolutely easily. Big tick for me.
The MX-5 1990 was the LS400. Will it will leave it at 1990
because we know we've obviously got plenty of more to go.
We'll have to revisit this in a few weeks time, but 1990 was the LS400 Japan's answer to the S-Class in every way was better than an S-Class that was benchmarked against, and Luckily they I don't think they made much money on each car, they made, because they undercut the Germans by such a big price range and the gems, like how, like, how they selling this car for this prize. I think it was what their, what
BMW n and Mercedes with her. I believe they bought cars at
put LS400 to just to take them apart and just say how they live how they making it for so less and they still what they were making any money on. But yeah, over-engineered like
incredibly sophisticated. Smooth.
Absolutely. The smoothest V8 engine.
You can possibly have, I reckon I still think it is.
There a smooth as V8 engine I've ever been in.
Like, like any any one you said is just a just a joy to be in.
Like they just so sad that they don't feel like a V8 its and, and that's and that's weird because like, you wanted to feel like a VA but this in this V8 you kind of just like, no I get this. This is a, it's a smooth
powerful, but refined it. It doesn't, it it didn't feel
like you're, you know, you're pushrod, engine deviates.
It's feels like a well-engineered quad-cam V8, you know, they felt felt smooth from felt refined and I think that's it's a definitely a worthy winner.
So you realize that 1990 now is 33 years ago.
So car is 33 years old. I sort of beautiful one in can
work. Well yesterday, I was sitting at
the lights and it was parked and I say good long.
Look at it. It was a really, really still
Very end some design, beautiful proportion and the interior and it was just absolutely luxurious, great, great cars I still want one. Yeah and the sad thing is, you
know, probably five more maybe maybe closes at ten years ago, you know. There were five thousand
dollars, you know, you could pick one up to five grains but that time has passed. I think, I think people realize
the value in them and prices have been on the rise for quite a while to find a good one. And there are plenty of monthly
funds around, you know, because there's a reliable objects, keep it going, sadly. Of course, when you start
putting spares, the specifically have Lexus written on the box, rather than Toyota price of them becomes a little prohibitive but but yeah, really show the world what the Japanese could do with is with that quality Motorcar? Yeah, that is for me.
And I still think the first gen like the pre-facelift, the first version of the yellow spot is the best-looking else.
One. I would like to salute the
updates. And daddys really all you'll see
Tehran and Wilson didn't meet with Worldwide, Acclaim, do this. No, no, but but but cast wide
Acclaim but prior to that everything else was pretty good.
Yeah, I'm happy with that. I will choose that Wheels as
AIDS. The beginning.
It was quite an exhaustive process and most of the time they seem to get it right, I think.
Yeah. I think they've got a pretty
good hit record. Definitely got a good hit record
with that because it because in the, for the following year was it was It was tired. And, and again, tired.
And then we'll tie to the same car, essentially and it kept going along. But we'll get, we'll get to
that. We'll do the 90s and up until
now. And in a couple episodes time,
shall we? Get into the quiz Gentleman on
Rainey? Let's go.
Let's get into it. All right, it's time for the
quiz now. Edward has drawn us back to the
quiz with good friend of his when I rub how you doing aerobic, call them are Rob why like because Has a Renault.
I have a Renault six days. That's how I met him through
Renault 16. Look what?
Look Matt it's how I met you as how I'm at Renault robe.
Yeah look at that. Maybe how I'll divorce David and
Scott will be because I pulled up in Como Park, pop the Bonnet and never look back never look fabulous back come in and seek.
The gift that keeps on giving. Like, all I want to make you
that stick out that that it's, it'll be the bring people together, so funny, but just talk about another one of your cars. Roll actually, oh 1989 Wheels
car of the year award winner, ah, Master FX firings farben.
Oh yes, that's right, right? Also because of me because of
it, I'm sorry. And because of that and because
of me too, is it was David son-in-law my Shawn?
Hey Shawn. Was that do something with that
picnic thing. And that's right.
He said in it he's a in the trunk.
That's right. Yeah.
Well, someone is married to David's daughter asleep.
There we go. Yeah, connected Rising.
Anyway, we're back to the Renault.
Rob's gonna partake on his own merits, not going to be Ed and maybe we'll write the crowd. Well, I'm not going to do very
well. I do know you're kinda.
I come on your car guy. Okay, let's get straight into it
then. Good luck.
It works with we do is we do ten questions.
I don't even have the quiz before but 10 questions plus some bonus questions. You buzzing with your name.
So you go rob and then we'll be like yep, Rob and you will give it a chance to answer. Okay.
Alright, let's get into a question one.
What car has just been announced as Wheels car.
The David David straight in there or whatever restored Everest is the correct answer they ever it.
Is, you want to just launch new one?
Yes, Lord, yes. Just station wagon.
Yeah yes question to Ralph Nader's 1965 book unsafe at any speed was predominately, which vehicle did Ford Pinto incorrect? I know.
Yeah. The Chevrolet Corvette, they're
they're correct. Is that is the correct answer.
This one of my ball last. Last time I bought some Posh.
It was very cool thing, 130 a good-looking car.
Like them, they would like a score check just to just to let everybody be great. Davis onto everybody else on it
is 0 question 3. On Ford's first day after
showing the original 1964 and a half, Mustang to the world, how many orders in the thousands did they get closer to?
You will get the chocolates? So, you know, this is back in
the night in 1964, a lot. It was a lot and it's under 100,
it's under 100,000, but do, but they, they got this.
How many orders they got on the first day?
August 25 25. Thousands is David 50/50, says
Rob 30,000 30 says Mr. Bunting, I'll go 48 4803 tension music or
anything. We could
How many Mustangs 22,000 on the first day they ordered?
So that means Edward bunting gets the truck.
Thank you very much. Question for recently at auction
a Ford Sierra rs500 Cosworth sold for a ridiculous amount of money. How much was his record-breaking
price? Ed Ed eight hundred thousand
dollars 800 cases. Is Edwards really to guess which
of these cars just putting out there?
Like 250 thousand two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for 80s. Mo 80s, Ford sorry.
I'll go 350, 350 subscribing and Rob I can't eat with you t250 you guys will be miles off it sold for over a million dollars it sold for 1 million and fifty eight thousand dollars.
So I got the prize, you did. The one thing we took that never
mind. You never cried over 200,000
hours out. You was up there.
I heard something about it being out there which is an insane amount. Out of money for what is
essentially an 80s Ford. So yeah, bonus question, who
built the rs500 part? Remember Was a homologation Race
Car. The Cosworth was is known as the
most winningest car of all time in any form of Motorsport.
That Motorsport team, you don't know.
I take a step up, do not I can't add a name, put it out there.
The British they are British. I'll give you that they have a
shit. Well, you put, I'll give you my
5. Rob, that's Point your point 5,
therefore think are really on the boat McLaren, but someone like that someone like me is so I better stop.
It's not McLaren, your point. 540 feet that you can stay
quiet. Let's just stay.
I've invited you want. I really Taking Liberties.
Sorry. Take that.
Which was the winner of the 1990.
I think of wheels are the Asura Liberty.
Know, I wasn't as was it 91 it running one somewhere.
There were 94 and 98 94-98, ye won twice, and everyone twice.
No, no one before 94, the first gen Liberty, one.
You weren't efficient, Liberty, bring up the list.
Matthew it one in 1993, on 94. 94, the first gen the first year
in 94, is the second gen. Yeah, we're second.
Jenna was the first one that I want to get in 98.
So the first thing that he didn't win wins coming.
No soda. Okay, what's it gonna be German
so? Oh David David David?
Was it? It was tough with particular is
half. The I'll give you one more.
Look, they also built with somebody else.
Okay? Okay, so and they are either
Pro-Drive, Pro-Drive, stick food, but that's that's, that's dirty, be nice. You got one more attempt, they
are in Formula One and it's not McLaren.
So that's that should give you the Indians Williams Williams Frank. It wasn't a real.
It wasn't Williams. That's it was thinking of, okay,
well, good luck. Exactly.
McLaren said it was tickford in and salba.
I think he's left its Mansell because you said it's my job.
I tried your meds for building himself a way.
You said that was it red racing racing racing in the center.
It had a finger in the pie, I didn't he it's only British ones. I can think of top of my head
system arm as the moderns. Correct.
It was asked Martin and five, they make 500 RS 500, which we never would have kicked Aston Martin.
Well for wrecking my brain. I'm like this only McLaren and
like estimate and and you got Williams, but your said no to that like some more. It's tightening up.
It would to Scotty one David 3 and mr.
Rob on what point five question, five still anybody's game Hyundai or Hyundai or hundy and the offers a ute in other markets to possibly coming to Australia, what is it called, David? It's called the center.
Hey isn't incorrect, set of eight is an SUV.
We talked about to work the other day and I Remember don't know how many of you for evaluation, I know, I know.
Okay, so remember the name to start with are no cells for Santa. Monica Monica is incorrect,
robe, accrue, Santa Cruz. It is Santa Cruz, but you're
already been. So no one has recently changed
his name for what? Hey, It's good in the first,
it's the Subaru, Crosstrek, I think is absolutely correct.
You're tying up the top scorer with three apiece.
Question seven, kills per Canto, is a very popular small car.
What does / Canto and David me just by he why?
She is absolutely correct well done.
It's an Italian is it. I have to exert Italian,
Spanish, and me the same about any mechanical.
But in its Home Market of South Korea, it's notice something different. What's it called?
Is he right? Correct.
The key of Chile. Correct.
No, it's not the chili. It's not the do a spice.
Put it that way. It's not, it's not the American
repo or what do they, what do they call those really?
A ghost? Yeah, it's no actually.
It's got nothing to do with. With with burning this this one
I've heard. But I can't remember what it is.
No idea. John, now it's the morning.
They called the the Kia morning, but as in morning, waking up in the morning, which is a we're not not mou.
He could I guess I guess in Korean morning, mate odds, haha morning, it's exciting. It doesn't mean it's morning.
I'm a New York up to to like a club and be like gonna take a woman home one night and they'll be like and it's like what are you drawing? Like I'm going to morning baby.
Like is this is just like it just says it sounds sleazy at the same time. They don't translate.
Yeah. Next question. 8, the Mazda3
share this platform with how many Mazda vehicles on sale.
So there's so how many other measures of vehicles on sale in their range? Doesn't share it?
Say it, I don't do well. I just want you to give me a
number of others. Other than the Mazda3 choosing
corrects take a stab. I have one of those.
Take a listen. Trying to think because I Rob
Rob your three out of this. Yep.
Three others is correct what them?
Well they got one we got one point and there is still two questions to go fishing. How many generations of the
Toyota Yaris have their being date?
It was so good. I can't I can't I couldn't.
It was like they said at the same time it's just depends.
One name is longer than the other find David.
It's your birthday week you Australian.
But we're in the Home Market I guess in terms of generating because in Australia called the first generation as an echo.
So so including the echo. But I tell you what, there's
only one way to settle this and you guys, The rock paper scissors live online and then you can, okay, ready, what you got three paper scissors rock and it, but on rock, you.
Yeah. So one scissors rock bar is it
has kept his suit? You David.
I don't, I'll probably the wrong so you can bread read in including, including Echo, 3 incorrect.
Hey, Ed for well, who is corrected with what That'll teach you to get him first. It's anyone's game with your
name is Damon. And Edward question. 10 spell.
Vw's version of campervan a kids.
No vw's version of campervan. Yep.
By that, you mean spell it in letters, spell it out, like the demon. The caravel know, they've got on
their, on their website. You can buy the campervan.
You spell how they spell Camp event.
Yeah. Okay.
A.m. P.
This is where he needs to be careful here VA n.
That's what I wouldn't. That's correct.
Spelled with a K campervan because VW like to be different they do well done. It was a CH the Capcom pro bono
2.0. Yes at the top.
Yeah a compliment. Yeah.
What's in my camper van? Yeah this is good.
This is good score, check. Scotty one run around. 85, David
on for and tonight's winner on a grand total of five Cinco is mr.
Edward, bunting Waldheim, g g. I was a tight game you have to
get it. Yeah I was thank you rob.
Thank you, good morning. Can you believe someone spent
over a million dollars on a Sierra Cosworth like I mean it's I guess I need to make very many in arson.
Spree egg To be fair play only reason why I sold for so much.
Got the rarely Heritage, you know?
People. Yeah, that helps that's Booyah.
It's got its got like a lot of racing pedigree.
It's, as I said, it's the most winning this race car of all time. So most winningest, racecar
generational, ship that is at least Matthew.
But yes, that's what it's, that's how it's said, winningest. And I know that's not a word.
I know I'm gonna find that in Oxford dictionary.
That's what they said, even. I'm Richard Hammond said that,
thank you very much. My Sweeney Escape.
So the BMW E30 M3 one, the most, I believe writers, but the most things, the Sierra competed in it one.
So so yeah. That was, that's why it's got
that. That term, very nice run a Rob.
