Top 5 HYPER Cars, Monterey Car Week, Connecting Reality To Fantasy | Episode 1,008

So, I was just telling you this is that

weird time of the year every year. It's

Monterey car week. It's it's call it car

week, call it Monterey, Pebble Beach,

whatever you want to call it. This is

that time 3 weeks into August every year

where I feel like the entire nation of

car people looks to the west coast to

the very nice area of Carmel at all

these cars. And it may be the only time

every year that I feel any kind of FOMO,

any kind of are we missing something?

Should we be there? And then I remember

the times we've gone and it is madness.

You see all the pretty pictures, the

cool cars, and they are very cool and

the weird cars and the stratospherically

expensive cars.

>> Oh, yeah.

>> And one of the struggles I have with it

every year, and you and I have talked

about this,

>> is I feel like it's just an opportunity

for non-rich car people to stand around

and applaud those that are rich. It just

feels really weird every year. It feels

really weird.

>> Funny. I mean, there are things you can

do that are inexpensive, but most things

that you've heard about like the quail

and and Motox that happened and going to

the actual Pebble Beach show are wildly

expensive to get into. Prohibitively

expensive to get into. There's people by

design, of course. There's people

everywhere. Cars you've only ever heard

of. It's sitting right there.

I'm going to attempt to recreate

influencer guides to Monteray because

everybody does a guide to Monterey and

here's what you should see and they end

up invariably saying the same thing.

>> Of course. Yeah.

>> Here's what you do.

>> Show up.

>> Wow. Deep.

>> Show up.

>> Deep. Uh-huh. Yeah.

>> You will see cars. You don't even have

to go to all these expensive shows. The

auction actually to go into the auction

just observe. They Well, it used to be

40 bucks. I don't know what it is now,

but still you can go in for relatively

inexpensively. There's restaurants.

There's

>> more wine than you can possibly imagine.

There's cars driving everywhere. You

will get sick of Ferraris. You will

think,

>> "Why don't I have a Ferrari, but if I

had a Ferrari, I'd just be like

everybody else. So, I don't want a

Ferrari."

>> It's absurd.

>> You have to have crazy things.

>> This is my guide. Here's how to do

Carmel week. Monterey car week.

>> Go in to show up. any event that's

happening, the parking lot is the best

Cars and Coffee of Exotics you've ever

seen. The parking lot, which is usually

another golf course, or another fairway

to go to the other fairway where the

actual show is. So, you park on one

fairway and then walk over to the other

fairway.

>> Exactly. How you doing?

>> And the other thing is we've also seen

this when we've been there. The only way

to throw down at Monteray to have an

entrance that people notice are the

people that chopper in

>> because true because the cars in the

parking lot are I mean it's like just an

exotic Skittles showcase and then you

walk in and I want to talk about

something. This is one of the only times

every year that we will actually talk

about weird concepts at length

>> because at this point every car maker

really throws down and goes, "Here's our

crazy stuff." Some of which is just

about to come out for real and some of

which will never ever come out. But

here's the crazy thing. It's like you're

looking into the actual future because

you're going to see a concept that if it

runs at all is going to come across the

auctions in Pebble Beach in 10 or 20

years and somebody's going to pay an

exorbitant amount for that car that you

were there. I was there to see it when

they first unveiled this and now

somebody's selling it for I can't even

imagine.

>> It's there, man. And you get

>> the price of a yacht. I don't know.

Yeah, it's crazy.

>> Well, they don't chopper in. They

actually fly into the jet center and if

you do it right, you come in Monday and

start to mingle and then your jet is

already parked in the valet jet

>> area.

>> Yes. So you can be there at the Motor

Show,

>> the Friday event or Thursday, whatever

it is. Yeah. Yeah. Of course. Y

>> we've got a great podcast for you and in

honor of Monterey Car Week 2025, we are

covering our top five yet once again,

but this time we are doing the top five

hypercars for the topic today because

why not? It's on our mind.

appropriate during car week. So, we'll

get to Thank you for the ideas. We'll

get back to other ideas in the future.

They will not be hyper else, but we've

got great great uh list. I think I'm

hoping you'll be surprised. I'm hoping

I'll be surprised by your list.

>> I I kind of surprised myself as I really

got into because what we're talking

about here is genuine hypercars again in

honor of Monterey. Genuine hypercars.

So, it's money, no object cars. But as I

really kind of like to kind of settle

myself down and go, what would I own

>> just like actually own and really want

to drive

>> $4 million to spend on a car

>> on each car or whatever. Yeah. It's just

ridicul. It's it's it's it's complete

and utter absurdity.

>> It's this is the time of year to

>> totally

>> to play to

>> and trying to ground my thinking into

just not I would like to own

>> million dollar car ground,

>> but would but would I drive it? What are

the ones I would drive? That was got

what got really interesting to me. So

yeah, I'm excited to talk about that for

sure.

>> Well, we should the thing I love most

about Monterey Car Week and we'll say

this again, but and that is

>> you could say, well, it's just a

celebration of cars and they're all

parked, but that is not true. There are

so many actual drives. That's

>> true. Yes.

>> To Mter Ray and during Mter Ray that

everybody there, enthusiasts at every

level, every income level, they're all

actually driving their cars. And that's

what I do love most about it. Well,

isn't the Thursday the tour day where

you can go up and down?

>> Many tours actually,

>> but there's there's the thing people go

every year and I know it's it's actually

one of the few amazing free things you

can do there is you drive down through

the um the best part of it just south of

Carmel and you park on the sides and

people do a big loop in all the 17 mile

drive.

>> But I'm talking about the actual part of

the PCH there that that

>> Oh, yeah. There's in town there's parks

there. It's awesome. Everybody's driving

their cars around. Anyway, so we'll get

to that, but first we must start off

with some interesting news. You have

probably heard about this kind of

information before and it's certainly

something that uh I and all my

classmates when I was going to Art

Center, we all imagine the future of

what vehicles would do. And that is

inductive charging in the roadways.

>> But here outside of Paris, built into a

section of the A10 freeway, that is

actually happening. Testing is going

right now. It's It's underway as of

September on a stretch of French

motorway equipped with the charge as you

drive electricity chargers placed

underneath the road surface.

>> Yeah, I can't believe that anybody's

actually doing this.

>> So, check this out.

>> Really interesting. They are going to be

testing a specially equipped prototype

Coach Lori van and car.

>> So, that means to those of us that are

not in Europe, that means a bus, a semi,

and an actual actual car. But the

reality is they're having to build these

specifically to interact with the roads

because the current fleet of electric

cars from anybody you can think of isn't

designed to interact with this. It's a

cool idea, but you've got to retrofit

and build a car to talk to the roadway.

>> Correct. So testing is underway and

apparently that last year uh 1 kilometer

of charge as you drive road costs at

least 4 million euro. Now if it works

well, operators could profit from

selling the electricity of course and

vehicles could carry smaller, lighter

batteries because the aim is to allow

these lorries, the big trucks to switch

to electricity and where similar

technology has been visited on secondary

roads. The Vinci test, Vinci is the

construction company or the motorway

operator there to be the first on a

motorway actually doing this. And then

the tech could potentially be installed

for no cable charging in domestic

garages. So, it's all testing,

>> but opponents fear electromagnetic

radiation from powerful induction plates

like this might cause health problems to

humans and animals. So, I mean, we shall

see.

>> Stands to reason. The idea is really

cool. The idea has been really cool. I

mean, the concept of you don't have to

carry all your batteries around.

>> Okay, that's huge because the amount of

weight it can bring down because battery

and the weight and the recharging time

and all of this problem. I love the

idea. I think the cost is way up there.

Yes. What are the downsides per

kilometer? Yes. So, for those of you

that don't speak it, that's roughly a

half mile. Anyway, that's a lot of

money. The the point is what's what are

the downsides? I can see the upsides.

What are the downsides? We just don't

know. But I'm I'm fascinated that

they're actually doing it.

>> Yeah. Really interesting. I'm I'm

fascinated by the the push because the

future is going to be not just the

vehicles. It's going to be the entire

infrastructure. It's not just going to

be charging, not just gas. It's going to

be roadways and thinking differently. I

mean,

>> let yourself think, let yourself go. And

that's what

we're doing. I mean, when I was in

school and here we are actually doing

testing, which is really cool to see.

>> It's crazy. We should shift to some

crazy concepts that have come out of Car

Week and Monterey. You and I didn't talk

about which ones we were talk about, so

we'll probably talk about different

ones, but I'm having to laugh at two

that relate to cars we've recently been

talking about.

>> Okay. And that is the Ford Mustang GTD.

>> Okay.

>> And the Corvette ZR, whichever variant

you'd like, the one, the 1X, the

whatever, the pick a ZR.

>> We will start with the fact that why do

the GTD Mustang when you can just go

over to Shelby who's been around forever

>> and they are offering the Super Snake R.

That's right. The Super Snake R is this

thing. Oo, it is crazy looking. It is

essentially here. Here's it's $225,000,

Paul, but you have to bring them a dark

horse. So, let's be honest. Do the math.

Darkhorse $70,000.

>> $225 on top of the dark.

>> Yes. So, it's a $300,000 buy. So, it's

it's almost as much as what we're

hearing the rumor of the GTD to be.

>> 400,000,

>> which is three to 400,000 for the GTD.

Okay. So, this is 850 horsepower.

>> And you could probably have this sooner

than a GT

>> probably. And it's Shelby, who obviously

has a great history in doing amazing uh

variants of really cool Fords. So, this

is the Shelby Super Snake Rently being

shown at Monterey. By the time you hear

this, it will have already been shown at

Monterey. This exists, but again, it's

$300,000.

So, that is essentially twice as much as

your Corvette ZR option.

Please, please tell me it weighs less.

No, the GTD.

>> No. Well, no. It weighs over 4,000 lb.

It weighs a little more than the

Darkhorse does. It weighs over 4,000 lb.

But the GTD is 4,300.

>> It's Sorry, this is this is less than

>> No, no, no. This is the number I saw was

4,400. It's 100 pounds more than the GTD

>> because I was going to do a happy dance

or something like Not only is it less,

not only does it not use everything that

>> But once you're over 4,000 lbs, do we

care? It's just too heavy. It's too big

and heavy.

>> It's too big and heavy.

>> What we're talking about. It does look

big and heavy. I mean, it looks cool.

>> All the power, right?

>> So, there's that going on. And then, of

course,

>> melt your tires instantly.

>> Yeah. Well, consumables are the problem.

Here's here's the thing we have to keep

thinking about. And electric cars prove

this, but these big big monsters are

proving it as well. Once you add weight,

your consumables go way up. So, if you

ever want to use the capability of what

these cars do, expect to blow through

tires and brakes. Like, have them on.

You know how you can order stuff that

just automatically arrives regularly.

>> Get an oversized Pringles can.

>> Seriously, just rotors,

>> rotors, tires. You need to have your

constant delivery every couple of weeks

of tires and rotors if you want to use

this car. You subscribe to

>> Amazon subscription. That's exactly what

we're doing. We're got a subscription to

tires and motor.

>> Subscribe to your consumables.

>> Oh, that is the world we live in. For

>> that is where we live in. While while

we're here, I want to talk about another

American thing and that is the Did you

see this? The Chevrolet CX.

>> I did. So,

>> tell us about it. This is interesting.

>> This is very interesting. This is

essentially at its core, this is

obviously at Monterey right now, but at

its core, this is a

full realization of design ideas that

have come out of the California Design

Studio, London Design Studio, where

we've talked about it before. This is

supposed to be, again, CX doesn't just

sound cool. That would be the C10.

So, they skip the C9, they go to the

C10. So, this is potentially looking two

two decades, I mean, two generations

forward. Notice there is a race version

and a roadgoing version. This is

something many, many, many, many, many

manufacturers have done. Pujo did it,

Renault did it. Manufacturers where you

never heard of these cars again. That's

why I'm bringing them up. This is for

Gran Turismo. This will release in the

Gran Turismo game. It's currently being

shown at Monterey. It is the C10, not

the C9. So, this is a moonshot what we'd

like to do. And this entire cabin

>> folds forward as one piece. One big

cockpit that folds forward, which would

never ever ever ever ever

be in a production car. It's just not

happening. It's very cool looking. So

they have the

>> My windshield broke. Okay, tell me your

car.

>> Yeah, exactly. Oh, you know what? We

don't service that.

>> We actually don't carry those. We have

no plans. We've never even heard of

that.

>> I can't imagine the crash standards

related to that. Of course, this is also

claiming to be a 2,000 horsepower EV

right at the time when 200 horsepower

EVs are not a thing we want anymore.

>> 2000 that seems like

>> it's going to be a motor each wheel.

That's what they're saying. So, this is

your classic obviously concept. But as

>> started designing 5 years ago, six eight

years ago

>> as Chevy is is doing the ZR various

versions laps at the ring and competing

with the GTD. This is what they're

showing in Monterey, which I find

fascinating.

>> I've got a few cars to cover here. So

you can go ahead and switch over. This

is great. Ladies and gentlemen, we are

now in a period of automotive

buying and history

>> where not only are we a wash in a glut

of supercars and a glut of builders,

homage builders. We talked about in

episode 101

>> the problem of Porsche having to do with

all these different builders. And I I

still miss some. I'm still coming

acrossing different builders that were

not on that list.

>> Who out there with all of the 20some

builders that are making niche

restorations restos of the 911? Who is

still out there? If you're still finding

more going, that's a market that's

untapped.

What on earth? But it is untapped

apparently because now not only are

these builders out there

>> Mhm. And not only are they offering, you

know, a new car comes out, the Corvette

>> C10, whatever, the Ferrari, anything.

Um,

>> we always read about this cool new car

and it's always like we are always the

last to know because we were not

informed because we are not on the list.

>> We're not on the list to be buyers. We

really are buyers.

>> So now we're at a point in time where

>> you must be invited to come purchase

>> the new product.

I mean, it's been actually kind of going

on for a while, but

>> yeah,

>> we're getting down to not just building,

you know, Ferrari building 799 F80s.

>> With Gunther Works and their brand new

GWX,

a 4 L flat 6 making 440 horsepower, 320

lb feet of torque in a

>> re-imagined 911. Carbon fiber. Every

single panel is carbon fiber. Most

things on this car are carbon fiber.

>> So, this looks like what? a 99 a 964

>> maybe a 993. I guess it's a 993 shape,

but it is no actual 993 body panels cuz

they redid them all.

>> They redid everything in carbon fiber.

So, it's painted this deep grape

>> glossy

giant wing on the back.

>> Yes.

>> This is now offered, but it's not

offered from Gunther Works because they

have to invite you. And they're only

building three of them to their extra

very special customers. So, they're only

building three. So they're not

reimagining anything like their

competitors. They're remastering.

>> Really? Is that the term?

>> Yes, that is the new term. And now they

have introduced the new project F26

which is also a 4 L flat 6. But now this

makes a 1000 horsepower and 750 lbft of

torque. So that GS

>> rear wheel drive

>> and rear wheel drive. So this now looks

like a slant nose.

>> It does Porsche from back in the day.

>> Really nicely modernized slant nose.

The front end looks amazing actually.

>> Yes, totally different styling,

completely different wing, but similar.

You can tell it's it's a little

>> it's Gunther Works. It's a little more

full surfaces. Bubbly is an insult in

the wrong term, but full meaty, very

beautiful, full, sexy surfaces on this

car. So, this one's painted silver.

>> Think about the other one, that GWX, the

purple one.

>> Yeah. Yeah.

>> 440 horsepower, 320 lb feet of torque.

>> Plenty. Plenty. My GT4 has 414

horsepower, 310 lb feet of torque,

except it weighs 3200 lb. And that other

purple one weighs 2400. I

>> was going to say the gun to work is

probably 1,000 less.

>> So there you go. It's about the same

power except for this new F26, project

F26, which is 1,000 horsepower.

Mindblowing. Rear wheel drive. It'll be

under 3,000 lb. That is going to be

trying to kill you. And and here's the

thing you have to keep in mind there. I

think Gunther Works and Singer are

probably the two top best known super

high expensive of these, but they have

different missions. Singer is trying to

make the coolest looking bespoke luxury,

highly polished item you've ever

imagined of a reimagined Porsche. And

Gunther Works is trying to make a

missile.

>> Right. Singer is reimagining. Gunther is

remastering.

>> Remastering. Is somebody going to come

along and say the 911 greatest hits? Is

that going to be their tagline? You've

got to stop.

>> This is it. So, moving on to something

else we saw just prior to Monterey Week,

and that is from Bugatti.

>> Mhm.

>> Not only are they making a special

edition, they are only making one. One.

Okay. Okay. Genuine question that that

we cannot answer and Bugatti, I'm sure,

has answered and many of others are

answering it. You talked about Gunther

Works is going to make three of

something. That's high production.

>> Exactly. That's three times as many. How

do you decide? The only reason I can The

only reason I can figure why there's one

of this is because Bugatti didn't decide

to make it. Somebody came to Bugatti

with buckets of cash and said, "Make me

X."

>> Buckets of cash. I like that.

>> Like a yacht full of cash, you know?

Like they couldn't the the jet wasn't

big enough. They had to bring the yacht

to carry all the cash.

>> Is it wrap like drug money? It's rap. It

might just be drug money. It's just

>> we just weigh the money. We don't count

it. We just weigh it.

>> This is It was money by the kilo. Just

How many keys did you bring me?

>> It's about uh three and a half million

right there.

>> Yeah. Just get the forklift. Let's get

all your money off. Let's put it on the

scale. I mean, that's the only reason I

can think of why a company like this

would do one is because this is bespoke

for somebody that came to them.

>> It is. And they're using it as a

showpiece. And after Monteray week, this

will go to well, after the wave, it goes

to the doicile Bugatti, which is

probably a house they've rented to show

it off to other special customers and

say, "Wouldn't you like to bring saran

wrapped money? We will weigh your money.

>> Bring your keys of cash. We will build

you a car." Yes. Bugatti keys of cash.

That should be the tagline. I mean, Mate

Reebok, we're doing great stuff for you

here. It's good stuff. Yeah.

>> So, this is built under the program

solitaire. Highly bespoke.

So bespoke. It's only one. It's got the

1600 horsepower W16 though. It is not

the new Turbion with the V16 built by

Cossworth hyperdrive train. It is the

old W16.

>> Why would you accept that?

>> Quad turbo because well the other one's

still

>> because they started building it for a

while ago. Yeah. That's why.

>> Handcrafted sculpture of Bruyard. So

this is the Bugatti Brewyard in olive

green. And they've got Is this for

Jackie Stewart?

>> Cuz it's got tartan on the steering

wheel. It is tartan everywhere in the

seeds and a horse motif. Ecoin motif

everywhere down to the sculpture encased

in acrylic. I think it's acrylic. Maybe

it is crystal.

>> Who know? It's

>> better crystal. Better better be

crystal. Yeah,

>> I'm sure it's hand something was done by

hand here.

>> Something was

>> and it's encased in the shift lever so

you can celebrate and get your greasy

mitts on the shift lever every time you

want

>> and then call one of your people to come

clean it. Yeah. Uhhuh.

>> So there you go. carbon fiber. It is

tart. You're right. It's uh gorgeous.

>> It's green tartan. That's why I wonder

if this is for Jackie Stewart and nobody

said anything.

>> Maybe so that was the thing he wears.

That was his thing.

>> You and you see him at Monterey Car Week

walking around wearing green tartan.

>> I'm sure it's his tartan. I'm sure it is

the Stewart tartan. I have no doubt in

my mind that that is directly connected

to his history. Anyway, moving on.

>> Wow. So, Bugatti, one of one, but moving

on to really interesting news from

Lexus. Yeah,

>> this is the sport concept. Not much is

known about this. I do want to point out

to all of you listening and watching to

use your eagle eyes to spot something

that I find very interesting and that is

underneath the rear wing of the new

sport concept here.

>> Gorgeous design actually. So now the the

camouflage wrap is off.

>> We believe it's going to be a twin turbo

V8.

>> We assume that the things that have been

camoed everywhere, Goodwood, the Ring,

etc. this is what's under that camo. We

don't have 100% confirmation for that,

but it makes sense that it would be.

This has the same rough scale and shape

of those those things that they're

testing, but who knows,

>> right? So, the Toyota version we

understand will be a GT3 track car or

something prepped for GT3 class racing.

But here, the Lexus, this would be the

roadgoing version.

>> And I think it's really interesting,

sexy GT car. Beautiful classic

proportions with a lot of modernized

Lexus design language.

>> It's the LFA move forward 20 years.

Yeah.

>> Grainy photo here, but I believe every

time you start this car, the wing would

raise because I have spotted what

appears to be exhaust outlets underneath

the rear wing,

>> which on one hand could be

>> interesting. You'd think Lexus would

apply the blown diffuser thing and have

the exhaust exit through the diffuser at

the bottom. But if this is exhaust, they

looked closed in some of the other

photos that I saw. They It looked just

simply like panels.

>> That wouldn't be EV charging ports. That

wouldn't be refueling. You would think

it does look like exhausts.

>> It appears to be exhaust.

>> What does that do to the wing over time?

>> Well, it'll melt your paint and probably

melt the wing at some point,

>> you would think. But if it's exhaust

being used in aerodynamic purposes

underneath the wing to give you instant

downforce, but that would mean the wing

would have to operate every time you

start the car. It cannot

>> never deploy.

>> You're right. You're absolutely right.

>> So, it would have to deploy. I'm very

curious about this. It could be simply

because concept wing rises. What do we

put under there? Could be anything at

this point. It's not production, but I'm

very intrigued by this car. I think it

looks absolutely superb. I'm very

interested in it.

>> I agree. This This

>> I think Lexus has done very well.

>> I agree. This looks like one of those

things. I mean, the LFA was beloved.

This looks like one of those things

where you just have that moment again

where you just go, "That's a Lexus."

It's just It's really cool looking. I I

think this weird seafoam green color

they released it in for these photos is

not my favorite choice, but it does look

really cool.

>> Does. And I I feel like with that that

front view with the the look at the

front lights, it has a little bit of an

AAA X shape to it.

>> But I and I'm just saying that as it

just looks amazing. I think it's a

fantastic looking car. It does have the

scale even bigger the scale and the

concept of the GT that you see in the

LFA or the even the LC500. This is a

fascinating move forward. Also notice

there is absolutely no Predator MAW on

this car. No Predator MA. Just a hint of

it. But what I love the most about these

surfaces, it's the proportions first.

Big beautiful broad GT car kinds of

surfaces, but there's a one two three

read. Big slab surfaces. Then there's

>> very prominent design elements front and

rear, whether it's intakes or

headlights, you know, new signature. You

can still see that in the uh in the

signature lighting here, that check

mark.

>> They're Nike check mark.

>> And then you look further, the third

read is details. Small details.

grill designs, patterning,

interesting lights, little tiny things,

little reflections, little jogs in the

surface. So, it's a beautiful one, two,

three read. Again, I think they've done

a superb job. I absolutely want to drive

this. I want to see it.

>> I agree. It looks amazing.

>> Like I said, we don't know anything

about it, but if the exhaust exits under

the wing, I'm curious about that. It

might just be for concept purposes only,

but

>> wild to me.

>> But somebody made that choice, which is

pretty fascinating. And I also have to

think it's very interesting when you see

pictures of this thing to think about

the fact that it is roughly the same

profile shape, if you will, of what

Jaguar did with their release. The

Jaguar looks like a joke. This looks

like a throwdown.

>> This looks like I want to drive it right

now.

>> Pretty fascinating. Other interesting

cars to come through all of this

Monterey madness is I have to go to the

latest uh limited Lamborghini with a

weird name. F E N O M E N O phenomen.

>> Tell tell us all why we should be

excited about this.

>> Uh I'm not really sure. It's It just

seems to be like another iteration.

>> Here's here's something that came out of

apparently the press release cuz I saw

it in multiple articles about this car,

which means the term I'm about to tell

you all must have come from Lamborghini.

You've heard about a car being a

one-off.

They are declaring this a few off. Ah,

that is a stretch. The the the

discussion is they're going to make like

29 or so. You know what's happened here

is these are probably already spoken for

by Lamborghini faithful. It is of course

a variation of the Rouelto. They did

this to the prior generations of the

Lamborghini. Adnauseium. They made so

many special editions. I saw a picture

actually in Monterey of somebody driving

a Siesta which looked gorgeous in

reality. I mean, Lamborghini has done

this successfully for the last 10-15

years where they take one of the models

they're currently building and they make

a few off. I can't believe I'm repeating

that. They make a few off of it where

it's essentially different body work and

some slight tweaks. This right now is

being discussed as Lamborghini's most

powerful production car ever at just

over,000 horsepower. 165. We all have to

have a thousand horsepower now. And I

keep asking for what?

>> Other than bragging rights, for what?

But here is this latest Lamborghini. So

there's that. I I don't really have I I

I don't lust after that. I'm just

acknowledging that it exists and it has

a funny name and it's Lamborghini doing

what they've done very successfully for

a while

big V12 right now. So there's that. And

then there's another one that is

completely different to me and that is

this thing.

that I actually have up and for those of

you that can't see it, this is an

ontrack photo of this. It's tandem

seating. It's it's fighter pilot

seating, one in front of another with a

center uh center cockpit. Right.

>> That's cool.

>> This is designed to be a roadleal track

car. All right. And the photo I'm

currently showing is fascinating. Not

just because it is an on-track photo,

but because the front quarter panel has

been crunched.

>> I mean,

>> they hit something with that.

>> At least they're using it. This ties

back to

>> This is why they're driving their cars.

This is why I'm bringing this up. This

is built in Southern California. Their

home track, quote unquote, is thermal.

>> They have just spent the last week, and

fascinated by this. They spent the last

week taking this car on public roads.

They did not trailer it track to track.

>> Good. They did a,000 miles of driving

and set production car records at five

California racetracks. Thunderhill,

Soma, Lagona, Willow, and their home

track at Thermal. They set a production

car record

>> pretty much all of them

>> at all five of those California area

racetracks in the week leading up to

Monterey and then they took this thing

to Monterey. And I'm wondering, did it

show up at Monterey with this front

quarter paner kind of mangled like a

meta tirewall? I kind of hope so.

>> But I I this is one of those cars where

I'm not sure who it's for because you

have to be somebody. I guess what it is

is this is somebody that wants to be buy

a BAC mono, but they want a cabin and

they have a friend. And I like the BAC

mono because you can put somebody behind

you in this

>> and you can actually drive it on the

road and not be exposed to the elements.

I mean, it's even got a windshield

wiper. It's craziness. But this, you

look at it, this is a crazy looking

US-made,

>> very specific, super powerful track

capable car. And I what I am most

impressed by is they drove it track to

track and then went to Monteray. I

didn't know that. Yeah, I'm very

impressed that they did that. I mean,

why would you want to be in the back

seat? I mean, you're not navigator

>> because you like that person up front.

The other thing that's fascinating about

that car,

>> I guess for hotlaps, take me on a hot

>> I because you because you just have a

friend and a passenger. You take the

significant whoever with you and you

trade off driving. The other thing I

think is fascinating is if I'm getting

this correct, this was at the quail and

the stats are a 2.9 L V8, which is tiny,

and electric motors

>> that would almost fit on a bike, 1250

horsepower.

>> Oh my gosh,

>> it's a bullet. So, I'm I'm intrigued by

it. It makes no sense to anybody. This

there have been 21 including an A and B

others of the 20 I guess and also 21 A

and B. Anyway, it's the 21C. But it does

look really cool and I am very impressed

that they actually drove it and set

This all brings us to our top five

hypercar list. M we're a wash in all

these hypercars. It's ongoing. It's an

onslaught. It just seems like every time

you turn around, there's some new

manufacturers, some other group of

people who have decided to put their

talents and skills to work to make a

beautiful, exotic, incredible car to

appeal to the wealthy individuals who

can buy it and park it in a garage and

drive it.

>> Hopefully, it'll be seen. But again, I

do love Monterey because vehicles old to

new, they are all driven. That Zinger is

a great example of that.

>> Many cars, I just heard of Ferrari USA

organized an entire trip

>> across the US from

>> people to drive their Ferraris and they

stayed at some nice places along the way

and then arrived in Monterey and then

went to the show and they had their

cars. So, I'm hearing about that more

and more. People are actually there's

there's organized drives. makes me want

to have us do one, but that's a whole

other price point. But there's organized

drives to get people to Monterey in

these really cool cars. And I was

actually looking through somebody's

photo roll today. And you know what I

saw in somebody's photo roll today as

we're getting ready for this podcast. I

saw our friend Ben in his A110's photo

roll because of course I took a photo of

that car and we warned Ben and you're

and I'm sure you're listening now, Ben.

You took an Alpine A110 to Monteray and

and here's the thing. He's going to see

dozens of every other car on the planet.

He will be the only A110. So you better

believe he was on a photo.

>> We should define hyperar for this

discussion. This is not relatable. It's

not everyday at all, but neither is

Monterey car week. It's not even close

to every day.

>> But it's it just

>> it's worth going to.

>> It's worth going to because I think it

instills the thing we all felt as kids

back into us as adults.

>> Yes.

>> Because the most inexpensive sports car,

let's take a Miata or a GR86. As a kid,

that is a fast exotic car. You don't

know what things cost.

>> Kids refer to cars like that as race

cars.

>> They are race cars.

>> Yeah. To kids. But as we grow older, as

we age, as we make money, as we

understand the value of a dollar and we

understand

>> the things that cost and the things that

I may never own in my life and I may

never actually see it,

>> but that same excitement you got as a

kid, that's what Monterey is for adults.

That's what car week is.

>> That's a great point.

>> And then they all drive them. So despite

>> people knocking the show and knocking

car week as just a gathering of,

>> you know, wealthy individuals to

celebrate. I mean, it is crazy

>> and the auctions that go on, but just

think about all those builders. Think

about the auctioneers auctioning these

cars. And even though you'll see them

again, they'll come across the auction

block.

>> They're preserving cars. They're keeping

it alive. This activity, this week, this

excitement preserves all of these cars

for future generations. They'll be more

expensive, but

>> okay, who cares?

>> Those cars will always be around and

they'll inspire other builders to

>> restore cars,

>> keep something running, make other

iterations, make your own car.

>> So, I welcome all of it because I'm

excited.

>> Yes,

>> we're not even there. And I'm excited.

>> I agree with you. It does get us excited

every year. And the craziest thing about

it, every time we've gone is I don't

care how many cars you and I see. I

don't care how many cars you and I

drive. There is that moment during car

week where you just stop like that

little kid seeing a whatever for the

first time and realize you're looking at

that car that you've only ever heard of

and here it is in the metal sitting

there and you just you you do the thing

a little kid does. You just kind of stop

and you a little bit mouth a gape and

then you just start walking circles

around it because it's actually sitting

there.

>> There it is. It's crazy.

>> So, hyperars, we're talking about

anything more than a million dollars.

It's got to be limited production,

pretty exclusive, cutting edge

technology or aerodynamics, something

that had some moonshot features about it

at the time. And it was a no compromise.

This is not we used our SUV platform.

This is bespoke thinking. We are going

to make some crazy car and we're going

to sell it to the public. And if you

think about it, these have existed in

some way, shape, or form. I mean, they

were called supercars for a time. Now

they're called hypercars. But the

reality is it's kind of

>> from the 70s forward,

>> maybe even the 60s forward. There's a

lot of stuff that you could almost

qualify as hypercars in its time.

>> Certainly from the 70s going forward.

>> And so what I ended up doing as I talked

about this and thought about this,

>> I have five. They're from different eras

and they're very different. There is a

little bit of a through line through a

lot of them, but they're different era

of cars because I really also started to

talk about as we talked at the top of

the podcast. If I'm really going to put

my head into this, if I'm really going

to dream this big,

>> what would I drive? Not what would I

have, what would I drive? And all five

of the ones I picked are ones where I

would be like, I'm going to drive that

somewhere today or I'm going to take it

on a road trip. I want to put myself in

that experience for a time period.

>> That's good. And that really informed my

decision because I realized there were a

couple of cars that

>> popped in my mind that I was like, but

yeah, I just don't know that I want to

drive that very much.

>> It's interesting. I'd like to drive it,

like own it and drive it and like go out

in it today. Imagine how much that

driving it.

>> Those were the five kind of cars I

picked and I ended up being

>> pretty good swath. I'm excited to hear

your your range as well.

>> I went pretty much all new. I think that

did you really?

>> The oldest car in my list is probably

two years old. Oh, I'm I have I have the

gamut.

>> Do you really? That's really multiple

decades of cars. Yes.

>> That's interesting. I think the other

requirement that we settled upon was it

can't be based upon anything.

>> Not at all.

>> Which eliminates all the Gunther works

and the Singers and the

>> Well, the weird Lamborghinis too,

>> for sure.

>> Yeah.

>> As cool as those cars are, as much as I

want them, I want all the iterations.

Even that Volvo Cyan P800 concept

>> that was super cool and very expensive.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

>> But it's based on something. It's a

reimagining. It's a re redoing

something. There's

>> Ferraris and Lambos and everybody's sort

of redoing a car. I want those. Those

are valid. They're more than a million.

>> Yeah,

>> they're carbon fiber replacement.

>> They would qualify in many ways, but I

don't think that makes sense.

>> Based on something. This is original

thinking. This is

>> brand new, latest tech pursuing,

>> you know, the highest quality build, no

compromises.

>> Love it. That's great.

>> That's what I went for. So, mind if I

dive in?

>> Go for it, please. I want to hear.

>> All right. First car on my list,

>> okay,

>> is from the man.

>> Oh,

>> it is from Gordon Murray, the T50. And

now I chose the T50 over the T33.

>> Mhm.

>> Because of the center seating, the

triple seating. Okay.

>> The T33 is very cool.

>> It is

>> styling wise, not as resolved to my eye

as the T50.

>> Really? I feel the opposite. I don't I

actually don't The more I look at the

T50, the more I don't think it looks

good. It may be one of those cars. And

the Alpine A110 is on this list as one

of those cars that doesn't work quite

right in photos, but when you stand

there with it, it has a presence that

makes it resolve. And the T50 might be

that.

>> It very well.

>> But in photos for me, I don't like the

T50 enough. I'll come back to it, but

keep going.

>> It's funny. I'm the I'm the

>> Interesting. All right. Good. Good.

>> The T50 again in photos feels more

resolved to my eye.

>> It's very slabsided. If you see this

deadon, front or rear, it's very

slabside and very vertical. just very

little tumble home because they've got

to fit passengers on each side of the

driver

>> all the way to the edges

>> cargo space and a lovely lovely

Cossworth V12.

>> The engine's amazing. Everything you

hear about this engine and with the the

fan uh for the aerodynamics out the

back. I mean, this is a this is like a

crazy anime car come to life. It's

incredible.

>> It really is. So, with that, $3,155,600,

a six-speed manual transmission, 661

horsepower with 353 pound- feet of

torque, and that translates to a 12,100

RPM red line.

>> If you visit Gordon Murray's website,

you can even click a button and hear

that V12 and it sends shivers. It is

unbelievable to hear. It also only

weighs 2400 lb.

>> Gosh, spectacular. Now, the rear fan,

because it's this is technically a fan

car. Actually, so was the original F1,

it accelerates the air passing

underneath the car, forcing it through

active control ducts that form part of

the rear diffuser, which means it can

increase downforce by 50%. And it also

uses the 48volt starter generator to

drive the fan and free up power from the

engine. So you can have short bursts of

power up to 700 horsepower.

And the V12 can hit its rev limiter from

from idle to red line in 3/10 of a

second. I

>> I've heard this before. It's difficult

to comprehend how fast that is. I think

it outrev. I don't think the needle can

move that quickly.

>> I I think it's probably a digital needle

for exactly that reason. Yeah,

>> probably. So, and I think that would

still be behind the mechanical engine. I

think it would still be second place.

>> Cossworth has this is like this is what

happens when Cossworth, the engine

builder, is given a task and no budget.

>> This is no compromises to me, but yet it

hearkens back to, of course, what we

associate with Gordon Murray, the center

seating position. I love that. I love

the materials.

I think it's so simplistic and it's just

the purity of driving. But as I was

looking around, this news just came

across

>> and that is

>> Yeah, I saw this too.

>> Gordon Murray GMA has announced the S1

LM, a hardcore track car that's based on

that T50 and reimagines the F1 Lama car.

So, it uses the the This has been

fascinating. uses the T50 underpinnings,

>> but it gives it the look of the F1.

>> Yeah,

>> the F1 LM car. And I I got to be honest,

I think this makes everybody that

ordered a T50 go, dang it.

>> But the problem is they're only going to

build five of these.

>> Yep. Yep.

>> Look at Oh, it's it's spectacular.

>> It is. Somebody does that thing. They

did it with the 928 and you loved it,

too. The Nardo 928. It's somebody takes

a beloved design and pulls it forward as

if it was made in 2025. Gordon Murray

in-house has done that with his cool F1

and it becomes this thing. And this is

beyond spectacular.

>> It's absolutely gorgeous. Nailed this.

So good. Yeah.

>> And that's as much as we know about that

particular those five. But wait, there's

more because now GMA has also announced

the Lama GTR. Sure.

>> It also uses the drivetrain from the

T50, but pretty much just the gearbox

and the engine. Everything else on this

is different. And yet again, a different

design, a new iteration,

>> and I'm in love with it.

>> Everything

that they're doing it is amazing.

>> So spectacular, the build. And I'm sure

you had to be contacted by the man

himself. would you like us to do this

for?

>> They didn't ask if anybody wanted this.

They had a list. They You told

>> They're not just building these on spec

and we've got a what would you like to

see on the showroom floor and we've got

them for sale with a

>> No. No. They are built for you and I am

absolutely all about this thing.

I

>> It's incredible.

>> It causes that deep want and it causes

that Imagine what you as a driver can do

if you had this. Imagine the feeling you

would have zinging the engine,

downshifting, upshifting through gears,

>> driving this center seating position,

feeling like a race car driver. You're

connected to the road as never before.

>> And you have the legacy and history of

Gordon Murray engineering and design

behind you.

>> Holy cow. The

>> problem is there's going to be very few

of these and they will also be way up

there. But yes, this all all of these.

But I'll just take a regular janky old

T50. How about that? It's like a regular

T50. Are we sloughing off T50s to build

these? Do we have like a pile of them

out back? Just could you cobble one

together? This is This is the

interesting thing about this is that

this These are already This is what

surprises me. These are already variants

of a car that's not even really out.

>> The T50 hasn't even really come out yet.

And they're offering variants of the

T50. And the only thing I can come up

with besides the fact that there's

people out there with money that will

spend the money. The only thing I can

come up with is

>> they had they they purposely said we're

only going to sell x number of T50s, but

they had enough people who didn't get

one that they started to go, oh, we can

take that technology and advertise it

further by making variants. They're

making variants on a car that's barely

getting delivered in the first place. I

am absolutely astonished by this

reality.

>> Guarantees business for them, guarantees

future income. It gets people excited

about the brand. It keeps them going.

All of the things I am so about this

car. All right, I will finish my list

and keep going with the Ferrari F80.

>> Moving on.

>> I like it that much. Do you?

>> I like this car. I am amazed. Okay. All

right. Keep going.

>> It's because of the slab design that

really hearkens back to the F40 for me.

>> Okay. All right. There's a lot of scoops

and openings and aerodynamics. The

amount of aerodynamics that has gone

into this car is astounding. If you read

about the the incredible aerodynamics

going on, especially in the nose of the

car where it comes enters underneath the

car and goes up over it there, there's

actually a hole in the front of the car.

So, yes, I spent time on the

configurator. Yes, I think it looks

really great in this green color.

>> How much did yours cost, Paul?

>> Well, right now,

>> I'm assuming you built it out. I'm I I

know you you built it out. Of course,

you did. I was well over four because

these start at 3.925

million3,925,000.

>> Talk about blowing the Paul lier budget.

>> This that that well fun exercise.

>> I also tried it out in blue because

>> because that's what you do.

>> That's what you do with the

configurator. And I had a yellow stripe

going down the the rear. I had yellow

calipers. I played with the different

wheel designs. But the reviews by Chris

Harris and by Ben Collins sealed the

deal for me. Especially Ben's review, he

was unkind to the car.

>> Okay.

>> As a guy like that should be.

>> Sure.

>> Throwing it sideways around the track.

And I mean heavy drifts, heavy sideways

at very high speeds and

>> kind of being critical and coming away

impressed

>> is a big tell for me. This is a 3 L

twinturbo V6 with three electric motors.

The most powerful road legal Ferrari

ever. Extreme technology and build have

gone into this. 1,184

horsepower, 793 pound- feet of torque,

8-speed DCT. It's a little on the heavy

side. What I could find was about 3700

lb. 34 to 3,700 lb, but that's okay.

Only 799 are to be built. But yes, track

worthy, Ferrari worthy. And to me, since

Ferrari has brought their styling back

in house, I feel like they're finding

their voice again without pin and

firina.

>> They're finding what it truly means to

have a desirable, interesting Ferrari.

And they had to look back to the F40 to

influence that. It's Lama car. There's a

lot of Lama influence here, but it's not

so crazy openings and and lines that are

there for seemingly no reason. It was

hard to determine a theme. Here I can

see the themes. I see Lama car. I see

F40. I see history. I see legacy.

>> That's what does it for me. Oh, in a big

way.

>> I love it. I do like this money no

object exercise. Oh, you are having fun.

>> Moving on to a car done by a designer

named Sasha Cipanov who is also a fellow

Art Center graduate. He graduated, I

think about a decade after I did, and

went on to work for Bugatti, most

notably designed the Bugatti Chiron, and

broke out on his own to design a car and

actually, I believe, is going to

production. It's very, very close.

>> But he has designed the Neu 27.

>> It is incredible looking and the stats

are unbelievable.

>> For a designer to actually execute and

pull off building a car is big news. It

hits real close to my heart. It looks

like nothing and everything to my eye,

>> but it has a lot of classic shapes. A

lots of lots of things that you can

hearken back to 70s Lama cars.

>> I see that. Yeah.

>> Maybe late60s, but 70s Lama cars,

nackaducts, beautiful Ferrari, old

Ferrari kinds of intakes. But for Sasha

to pull this off and a designer to go

from

>> no car to actually building and

realizing something that is entirely his

incredible respect but also a lot of

>> sensitive excellent design because you

can design things that are bad.

Designers have done things that are bad

and you can say well we executed it and

we did it but the final product was not

that great. You can clearly tell he's

had influence over every single detail.

And it has a lightweight look. It has a

Lama look. It has a classic look to me.

But most importantly are the specs.

>> Oh no. because he has worked with

Hartley Engines in New Zealand to build

a 6 and a half liter V12 with a,000

horsepower, close to a 12,000 RPM red

line, 7-speed gated manual transmission,

targeted curb weight of just over 2,600

lb, about 1,200 kg. The price is

unconfirmed, but I think we can safely

say it will be in the millions. But here

is that engine. What a work of art. Not

just the exhaust because it is exits

from the top of the V, which is

excellent. It's such a beautiful piece.

I am so all about this car. It's just

it's superb. Sasha, well done. I want to

drive this. It is something I feel like

I would drive constant. I would I would

beat on this thing. It's you can sense a

designer who wants to build something

that is drivable but exotic but still

fun. You just you want to find excuses

to just take it out.

>> What's it called again? I I was the name

wrong. I thought so.

>> L I L I L O. Right. L O. Okay. U. Got

it. All right. Yeah. I just

>> 27.

>> I will admit that almost made my list.

It really did. That was almost on my

list. And it was a little bit too

vaporware for me to go there, but I did

like it.

>> It is still vaporware.

>> It almost made my list, but I'm very,

very impressed. I That's a great list,

man. Bravo. And you did go all modern

stuff. I'm very impressed. Well, two

left.

Okay. Yeah. Keep going. Aston Martin

Valkyrie with a Cossworth V12. I can't

get enough of the Cossworth V12s,

apparently.

>> For sure. Yeah. Yeah.

>> $4 million for these

>> sculptural. Beautiful. But what blows my

mind the most about this is it's F1 for

the street.

>> It is. Yeah.

>> And that bubble that you sit in,

>> the cockpit,

>> if you look through the the front

wheels,

>> it how could they have done this? How

did they pull this off? It's a little

pod.

>> Your feet point towards the center line

of the car.

>> How did they pull this car off?

>> Absolutely.

>> It's like the front wheels are on

stalks. It's the weirdest thing. It

really is crazy.

>> V12 Aston styling. So desirable. This

car is old on the oldest one on my list.

Weirdly, it's two or three years old at

this point.

>> But it just seems like they're just

barely getting out there. But it's real.

>> Mhm.

>> The execution is real. 4 million.

>> I I have

>> It stirs me.

>> I have to stop real quick and

acknowledge that there is one here in

the Salt Lake area.

>> Yes, there is.

>> Owned by a guy with a big Instagram

account that they bedazzled for

Monterey.

>> Yeah.

>> And I just I you just

>> I just shake I shake my head. I I I just

it it absolutely So many of the

decisions were done for the Instagram

likes. I don't even know another way to

put it. And I've also seen that they got

I mean look they got what they needed.

They got the press uh acknowledgement

people how bedazzled Aston Martin we

should take pictures of it. So they're

they're getting the coverage that they

want. So I I just can't Okay. I can't.

All right. Moving on.

>> Moving on to my last choice on the list

from a company called Oil Stain Lab.

>> Oh, I'm not surprised you went here.

Yeah. Okay. Keep going. Now again this

is not based on anything even though the

first goaround was sort it was called

the half 911 that's where it was derived

from. This is the second iteration is my

understanding the definitely cleaned up

more bespoke iteration with a carbon

tub. All of these have carbon tubs

>> and it is a flat 6

>> but it's called the HF11 deriving its

name from the first half

>> 11

>> which is great. And this is 1.8 million

which is the

>> that's got to be the cheapest thing on

your list.

>> Most expensive they do make apparently

they're offering a hybrid version for

another 500,000 on top of that. But I

don't want the hybrid. I just want this

>> because 650 horsepower flat 6 engine

with a target weight of 2,000 lb. 2,000.

>> That's astonishing. If they pull that

off Lotus Elise weight and a lot more

power

>> I can't believe there's so many

companies building all these cars. I

mean who's going to buy all this?

Apparently, they're getting built.

>> All the same people are going to buy

them. That's the thing. There's going to

be a group of aundred or 200 people in

the world that are going to have all of

them.

>> That's the reality. Every They're going

to have everything you're listing.

>> Mind-blowing. The styling is excellent.

Awesome.

>> It looks like a driver's car to my eye.

>> I agree. I agree.

>> Yes. It ties into the flat 6 thing for

me. So, I've got three V12s, two sixs,

>> hybrid,

>> analog,

>> all based on style, of course, build

quality, no compromises. I think the the

most passionate for me of

>> car enthusiasts and designers is where

all of these cars are derived from. This

is my list.

>> You've done really well. In fact, I will

already I will already tip my hat and

say you probably have done this better

than me because I think I might have

just come in a little too grounded. I

actually what could I actually see money

no object actually could buy and what

would I actually drive and keep and

could possibly keep running. I maybe I

maybe I didn't go far enough. You've

done really really well.

That's that's all gimme stuff. If you're

going to be able to buy something,

because I I had a lot of thoughtful

considerations here. Let me go to the

first one, the Lamborghini Mirror.

the hypercar.

This is also Lamborghini's announcement

of here's who we are.

>> They dropped this and the rest of the

automotive world went, "What's going on

now?

>> Why aren't we?"

>> And I also I also had this thought. This

is a car from the 70s. Okay.

early Lamborghinis were from the 70s.

You think about the cars of the 70s and

most of the cars of the 70s I wouldn't

want to drive very fast.

>> I'd like to drive them. Now, I will

admit all of the cars on my crazy list,

I haven't driven a single one of them.

So, I may drive them and be like,

"That's off the list." But that would be

a nice problem to have. But, but this

strikes me as the perfect hypercar to

just own and drive and keep running.

>> Yeah.

a 5-speed 350 roughly horsepower.

list I would This is on my top of my

short list of cars I want to drive.

>> The Ferrari F40.

>> This This is exactly You'll notice that

so many of these cars for me are they're

all lightweight. They're all drivers

cars. Yeah,

>> very much the thinking that creates the

Lotus Elise.

>> Yeah,

>> there there's nothing in this car that

isn't about driving. There was always a

lot of discussion when it first came out

about you can see the carbon fiber weave

because the paint is so thin. You can

see the glue used on the interior

panels. There was no attempt to dress

this car up to be anything other than,

hey, this goes fast and hey, this is

lightweight.

Tiny little turbo V8. And I I I've heard

they can be both a handful and brilliant

to drive. Haven't driven one, would love

to. If you have one, please call. So

there's that. The So this is a fantastic

car that is on my extreme short list

because I just this this to me is the

pinnacle Ferrari

>> where Ferrari who if you think about the

history of the company, Ferrari exists

and sells cars so they can go racing.

>> Yeah.

>> This is Ferrari making a car that should

have just gone racing. So that's on my

list. I'm jumping up to the 90s with the

Gordon Murray 3 seat McLaren F1. It's a

V12 by BMW.

>> Yeah.

>> With around 600 horsepower. At the time

this car came out, nothing else was

anything like this. It took 15, 20 years

for other car makers to make a hypercar

that surpassed what this did day one.

This was a well over 200 mph car. Like

240 in some specs. 240. Everybody else

was chasing 200. The F40 did 2011.

Okay, seriously. And everybody praised

it. The the 59 I mean the 959 that came

out at the same time was about a 200 mph

car. And then this thing drops a few

years later at 240. It's not like it did

205. It did 240. It was like, let me

just push the puck on down. I'm just

going to show you what we're doing here.

Three seat BMW V12.

>> It has a gold flake insulated line uh

lining around the engine on on the

engine bay. I mean, this is just crazy

crazy thinking. It is so far out of the

box, but it's super analog. It's well

under 3,000 lb.

>> I am fascinated by this car.

>> I mean, I know he comes back to it, many

of these things, and modernize it with

the T50, but this just intrigues the

heck out of me and is so wonderfully

analog. So, I have to say the McLaren

F1. But then I'm still moving on

to Okay, two cars. And the reason I'm

going to put two cars together under one

slot is because I've only ever seen one

of them and they relate to each other.

This is the last Pagani Huayra.

Last Pagani Huayra. And the reason it's

significant I'm bringing up the last one

is because this last super variant and

Pagani does a ton of variants happen to

actually be manual. I like the the

Huayra very very much, but it's related

to the car they're currently offering

which is manual which I'm putting it on

the list as well, the Utopia. Oh,

>> the only reason the Utopia doesn't win

over the Huayra for me because this you

can buy right now with a seven-speed

auto uh manual. You can buy with an

auto, but you can buy it with a manual

right now.

>> Okay. If you have the money,

>> aren't they all sold out?

>> Uh well, I'm I'm saying they're

currently building

is their current car.

>> Gotcha.

>> The only reason the Utopia doesn't beat

the Huayra for me right now is because

I've never actually seen one. And you're

somewhere in Monterey right now seeing

many. Okay. I'm sure they have many.

I've seen the Huayra in person and I

love the Huayra to pieces. It is the car

for me that that is what a hypercar

should be because you could sit still in

a Huayra and be like, I understand why

it was so expensive. I get it. I'm not

even moving. I'm just sitting there. I

haven't turned the engine on yet. And

then you crank up the big V12 by

Mercedes and then you actually drive it

and all these kind of things that make

it theater. It is it is the only car on

my list that is all about the theater of

it. Mhm.

>> Okay. So, I think the Utopia might be my

preference, but I want to say I've seen

one first and I haven't. So, right now

it's kind of living in the same spot as

the Huayra.

>> Also, when they first released the

Utopia, it came out in like a flesh

color.

>> It was like a Caucasian skin color. It

was terrible.

>> Yeah, it was not good.

>> This is a This one I've got a photo of

here is a gorgeous Bordeaux red color

and it looks spectacular. I've also seen

it in a great blue and a really nice

green. This car deserves to be a color.

It looks great. I would love to see one

in person. I would also love to drive

one.

>> Yes.

>> The rare manual transmission.

>> Say these are manual. Manual.

>> Get them manual or auto. It's

unbelievable.

>> The world is littered with manual V12

supercars. There's

>> Well, here's the thing. Littered

>> between my Amira at $100,000 and a

million plus, there are no manuals. But

more than a million, the manuals show up

again. And I'm very curious to see if

that changes because the Amira that I

own at $100,000, which I will admit is a

lot of money. It's a much more a car

than I ever thought I'd own in my

lifetime.

>> But that's the end. Above that, there's

no manuals. It's like, you know, the

tumble weeds are blowing down the

street. You can't get a manual. You can

walk in

>> 100,000 to a million, nothing. You can

you can say, "I have a half million

dollars right now, and I'd like to buy a

manual." And nobody's got anything for

you.

>> You spend over a million. want to spend

millions, you get back into these cars

with manuals

>> because that's where the market is

going. The people with crazy money want

something other people can't have. And

so the manual, just like buttons and

knobs, is coming back

>> while everything goes screen and CVTs

for the rest of us.

>> They want to get manual with a bespoke

switch and knob. So yes, the Utopia

comes with the manual. And so does my

last car on my list. And I'm back to

Gordon Murray with the T33. So tell me,

>> I prefer over the T50.

>> Is it styling? Is it

>> It's

everything added up.

>> It's twofold. It's mainly styling and

theoretical usability. It's still a 600

horsepower car. But the V12 is the same

V12, but it's D2 and I think it I think

it spins to only 11,000 RPM.

>> Darn.

>> Sorry. It only has 600 horsepower.

>> Although this does strike me as a

slightly inflated Elise with a V12.

Well, it actually is in many ways the

Amira made lighter and more powerful.

>> That's a good point. Yeah, that's

>> So, this is a this is a couple million

dollar car. I actually I I already have

my weird three-seater in the McLaren F1.

This is a two-seater car. This feels

like a hyper car. This is also, in many

ways, you're right. It's a lease

thinking. It is a modern driver's car

that is super light,

>> but is also a car. It has two seats, not

three. It has a six-speed manual. 600

horsepower is going to be plenty.

>> You know,

>> it'll move.

>> And I actually do think the styling on

this, and maybe it's because it is a two

seat. I actually think the styling on

this, to me personally, is more

interesting than the T50. I think it is

more complete, and I like it. Also, it

comes in this spider target top thing,

which is pretty cool.

>> So, I'm going to go I may be the only

person on the planet, but I'm going to

go T33 over the T50.

>> Okay. Okay.

>> I've also got my McLaren F1 on this

list. I'm okay. But this is the last of

my five. Every one of them, if I look at

it, the the Paganis are the only really

truly crazy ones. And the rest of them,

the mirror is borderline, are about

let's make a driver's car. I haven't

even added mine up and I can tell you

you won because you've got a McLaren F1

on your list and the last I saw was

auctioned for about$25 million. So in

one car,

>> it blew the scale out with one car

choice. You're right. I totally

million for that car

>> on sheer budget. But

spent a lot more money. You're right. I

guess I didn't get as many moonshot cars

as you, I don't think.

>> But at the same time, talking about what

it'll cost,

>> I I'll only buy four. I won't buy I

won't buy the F1. I'll let it go. It's

fine. T33 is really cool to me and I

honestly feel like this is in so many

ways this is the next price point up of

the Amira. And I know many of you feel

like I'm overselling the Amir to say

that, but my point is the thinking is

most similar to the Amira.

>> Yeah.

>> 2 million

>> at at at more than like 20 times the

cost. Yeah.

>> What at 1.5 new? Well, it'd be the oil

stain lab. That's 1.8. That'd be your

first.

>> Yeah, it's crazy.

>> One of the first. You've got to spend

multiple million dollars after the Amira

to get back into a manual. Now, so one

of you is screaming 911. I I'm aware of

the fact that the 911 is available in

manual in some spec.

>> Okay, I'll give that to you.

>> Yeah,

>> but I don't think that the 911 typically

gets thought of in this kind of hyper

car supercar shopping. And I'm not

claiming the Amir is a supercar hyperar

either. I'm not claiming that. But I

think when you're spending4 million to a

million, you think you're buying a

supercar or hypercar. And at that point,

there's really not any manuals for you.

Possibly the 911 ST, but I that still

feels like a sports car cranked up, not

a supercar hypercar.

>> It's weird though. They're just not for

sale. You got to spend millions to get a

manual. Ridiculous.

>> I just like the fact that Todd outspent

me. I just I like that a lot.

For our first car debate, Akash writes

to us from Georgia. He wanted to reach

out with a car debate because he just

graduated from Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

Congratulations, Akos. With a mechanical

engineering degree and he's looking for

a car to be as all-in-one as he starts a

new job.

>> Love it.

>> But he doesn't know where that job's

going to be.

>> Mhm.

>> He has no idea at the moment, but his

mom pro promised him that she would

provide the down payment for a new car,

$5,000 when he gets a job, and then he

could finance the rest.

>> Love it. That's very generous. It's

really cool. His first car gifted to him

by his parents was a 2007 Honda Civic

EX. He loved the thing dearly since it

was light and small and had all the

bells and whistles he needed at the

time, like sunroof and an auxiliary port

and the

>> It's your first car. I'd like a sunroof.

And oh, look, I can hear my tunes. Done.

Oh, hey, guess what? It's it started

this morning. That's a bonus. Yeah.

>> He wanted to live closer to school, so

he switched colleges. Didn't make make

sense to pay for parking more than 800

bucks when the car itself probably cost

around four grand. So, they sold it to

CarMax. M.

>> So, this new to a cashache car should be

somewhere between 15 and $20,000.

>> He definitely wants it to feel somewhat

nice since he's gotten used to somewhat

newer cars than his his parents have

bought over the years that have had

things like heated seats, backup camera.

He also needs the car to be reliable

because he plans to road trip the heck

out of it in his spare time because he

hasn't explored much outside of Florida

and Georgia.

>> Okay, cool. We got great roads, Akos.

>> Yes,

>> in the West.

>> Well, just work west of that area.

Florida and Georgia. get over into just

we just we've still got this whole

series coming from our road trip where

we went for the first time for us into

the southeast.

>> Yes.

>> So get west of Georgia, get into

Tennessee, get into all those great

roads there. Get all the way into

Arkansas. Go to the Ozarks. There's so

many good roads not that far from you

and then keep coming west.

>> Now Akash has not driven a huge variety

of cars. He's been studying.

>> He's got his degree and predominantly he

says his parents 2013 Honda Pilot large

heavy steering gas guzzling. Yep. Did he

mention large?

>> That felt large, Tim. Got it. Yes.

>> And a 2023 Kia Sportage.

>> Slow and slower, but decent interior.

>> His initial I like it.

>> His initial thinking was along the lines

of a hatch or wagon since he likes the

idea of having extra space for stuff and

for people. So things like the Mazda 3

and the V6 come to mind.

>> Okay.

>> But other than that, he is open to

anything. So let me let me land the

plane there real quick. I just have to

stop and say real quick. Akos is

thinking a Mazda 3 little hatch. That'd

be cool. Or what about a Volvo V60

wagon? That'd be cool. Yeah, I could

take my friends. I could drive around.

It would be nice. It'd have amenities.

>> And then he um the the story takes a

turn. Uh life experience dawn and ruins

him. Uh he says he knows what's about to

happen isn't smart. He and a friend took

a road trip in his friend's mom's 2017

Porsche 911 Cabriolet. Now, I also want

to say here, you and your female friend.

Now, I don't know if there's a

relationship going on there, but I'm

just saying these are the pieces that

make up a really nice romantic comedy.

Okay.

>> Oh, I love that you're thinking story

line already.

>> And this girlfriend of his, maybe not

his girlfriend, but girlfriend of his,

took a road trip. You could take that

road trip in whatever. I just want to

acknowledge that. But no, no. Somehow,

somehow you talked her mom into letting

you borrow the 2017 Porsche 911

convertible

and you went for a drive on that. And

guess what? None of us are surprised.

You are ruined. You're ruined

now. You suddenly think, I'd like to

have a convertible. Never thought I

wanted a convertible all, but now I want

to have one. In fact, I really want to

have a Porsche. I think I'd really like

to have a 99.2. Maybe. I don't know.

Could I get in a Boxster Miata? I got to

have a convertible. All All of this

normal thinking right out the window.

And my question for you, Akos, is the

911 Cabriolet is totally different than

anything you've driven. I'm not

surprised that you had that experience.

How much was that experience increased

by the fact it was convertible anything,

which you've never driven? Cuz look, I'm

going to go somewhere crazy. A Camry

Solara with the top down. It's terrible

car. It's a terrible car.

>> Terrible. But with the top down on a

gorgeous road at the perfect temperature

is a better experience than lots of

really expensive great cars. Just that

moment when the top is down and the

weather is perfect and the sun is

setting in any kind of terrible

convertible. There are moments of

nirvana in that even if it's a terrible

car.

>> Fleeting though they are. Yes.

>> But they exist. You see what I'm saying?

>> So now you go 911 which is going to feel

good to drive.

>> And now you have this friend of yours

who's a girl. Maybe there's a

relationship. Maybe there's not, but

there's some sort of at least friendship

there. And it's not your car you have to

pay for. This is ideal. Of course, you

got ruined. We got to try to connect

reality to to fantasy here. It's

definitely fantasy because he just

hadn't give given convertibles any

thought. And then the 911 just the sky

is blue, grass is green.

>> Oh my gosh.

>> The world is in color.

>> Yes, it is.

>> I feel alive. Of course you do.

I'm glad.

>> I think we've all been there in one form

or the other.

>> Yes, we have.

>> I think we've all

>> This is his romantic comedy moment. He's

just off the deep end. Off the deep end.

>> He's dead set on getting this car or

something close. Well,

>> anything close is a 911 Cabriolet.

That's the only thing that's actually

close to a 911 Cabriolet. But he's

considering, as you suggested, boxers,

Miatas, Cabriolets. So maybe Cabriolet,

maybe. So he acknowledges he's 6'2, so

he's not even sure he'll fit in a Miata.

But now he's looking at those because

he's going, "Hang on, I got 15 to 20

grand," which is not convertible 911

money. I got 15 to 20 grand. Can I get

into a Boxster or 911 for that money?

You can. Here's the crazy thing. I'm

sure there is probably a 996 911 out

there, Cabriolet, you could probably

get.

>> Yeah.

>> But you don't I don't think you want

that one. I'm worried about what you'd

pay for

>> at this point in your life.

You can't get the 991.2 Camry.

>> He cannot.

>> Yes,

>> it's going to be a while. And I wish you

all success with whatever your new job

is. But for 15 to 20, I also don't want

to stretch you into something old with a

Porsche badge just to get you into a

911. I'm not going to suggest that. I am

going to stay on the path.

>> I like it. It's good.

>> Stay on Mazda 3. But what I am

suggesting for you, Akos, is a slightly

used Mazda 3 Turbo. They're lots of fun.

>> It's not a Cabriolet,

>> but I want the worry factor for you to

be less.

>> Even though I love that you are,

>> maybe you're in love with car and other

things, too. Maybe there's lots of love

going on, but that's okay. I want you to

uh I want you to stay on something that

is

it's going to be it's going to seem

pedestrian. It's going to seem too

normal, but I think you will really

appreciate just having something that

works, reliable, dependable,

inexpensive, and all the consumables.

Even though Miatas are inexpensive, I

think you're going to want something

probably bigger. Mhm.

>> As your new life expands, you're going

to want a little bit of cargo carrying

capacity. I mean, Miatas are great and

people do have them as their only cars,

but I think for you, Miata, even as a

fun car is down the road. That is maybe

on your list, but not for now either.

Even Boxers, I'm not going to suggest a

Boxster. I'm not going to squeeze you

into something just to replicate that

feeling

>> because you can always

>> maybe take your friend's mom's 911 again

>> or go turo something or go rent

something

that feeling I love that that's

>> plan the trip go get that convertible

rent it have fun enjoy it

>> and as you're doing that that will

enable you to drive hopefully other

convertibles

>> Mercedes BMW there's great convertibles

out that are larger, more substantial.

It'll give you time to work into a

Boxster and Miata and think about those

things. But your your home base, your

car, Mazda 3 Turbo, that is the car I

think you should spend. That that's

smart money right there. Especially

right out of college, first job, you

don't know where it's going to take you.

You don't know what's in on your

horizon.

>> And the exact counterpoint to that would

be the new Civic SI. Get one slightly

used,

>> brand new. They were 28 to 32. So sure,

>> I bet you could go find one. 200

horsepower, manual transmission, lots of

cargo space, great on gas mileage. And

the reason I say all this, Akos, is

because of insurance.

>> It is not just we speak of high school

drivers or new drivers

>> dealing with insurance. You're right out

of college.

>> You're going to be hit with a lot of new

bills. A lot of new unexpected fun

expenses are going to come your way.

>> Yes. True. Uh-huh.

>> And I don't want your car to just even

though you want that feeling replicated

at all times, imagine you're stuck in a

commute. Let's say you're in a Boxster.

>> Mhm.

>> It's going to ruin the experience. It's

going to chip away at this experience

that you hold up in your mind. This is

what Cabriolet's representing me. Well,

that's going to chip away at that.

>> That's good. That's very good. Yeah.

>> I want your commuter. It's still

interesting, fun, fuel efficient,

inexpensive for insurance,

>> inexpensive when it comes to buy new

brakes and tires and have the

maintenance done. And

>> what if somebody dings your car? You

>> you won't worry too much about it. Spend

wisely here. Mazda 3 Turbo or Civic SI,

they're both fun. They're both great

cars to drive.

>> This is my recommendation for you. And

I'm saying stay away from the cabs. All

the cabs right now. just stay away

because you're just starting out on your

car journey. You've got a lot of cars to

drive to discover who are you as a car

enthusiast.

>> You've got some driving to do.

>> Yeah, for sure. For sure.

>> But that's only good news. That's only

good news.

>> Yeah. Uh, okay. This is this is a rare

moment on the podcast where Paul was a

lot more mature than I was in car

choices. I was not very mature, but I'm

going to jump right in. It it happens.

>> You outspent me with

>> I I apparently I'm I've let it all hang

out today. I don't know what's going on.

I have to jump to a car in just a second

that that is really not the right

choice. But I want to I want to follow

your through line of convertibles for a

minute because yes, you could get a

Boxster, but I'm worried about the boxer

you get for your money because I think

it's going to surprise you with costs

because the the reality is the bottom of

the boxer market is 20 grand of the ones

you want and then those are still like I

don't know that's the one I want. And

then you're going to have to spend money

to make it work right and you want it to

be reliable and you want it to just run.

And I'm worried about there's not enough

available that's good that seems recent

enough in your price point. That's the

problem with boxers. Miatas are probably

a little bit too small for reality. But

you could get one other convertible that

gets overlooked and gets overlooked so

much. They're inexpensive by comparison

and that is the BMW Z4. specifically the

second generation BMW Z4 made09 to 2016

I believe it was which was the hard top

convertible BMW Z4 so it makes it a year

round car it has class it has

convertible styling it doesn't have a

huge trunk but it has a lot more space

than the Miata does because it is a hard

top convertible you have all-weather

capability it looks very classy these

are available all day long under 20

grand are they all day long. You have

choices. I just had it up on Auto

Tempest. You have choices, choices,

choices. I still don't know that this is

the right car for you. But if you really

were going to say, "I really want to go.

I want to converge what I got on the 911

and I want to do it now." I think this

is as close as you can get.

>> This is going to feel very high-end.

It's going to be good dynamically. It's

going to have a good amount of power.

It's recent. The ones I'm finding under

20 grand are 2015s. It's a 10-year-old

car. Mhm.

>> What 10-year-old box store are you

buying right now for 20 grand? You're

not.

>> Zero.

>> Exactly. So, this is what I'm saying.

Because these are overlooked. You could

get one right now and I think it would

be new enough with low enough mileage.

It would still be reliable enough. It's

not going to be like trying to pick at a

boxer that's 20 years old.

>> Mhm. Mhm.

>> I still don't know this is right, but

that's the closest I can get you right

now.

>> It's kind of a flashy car. It is. It's a

flashy car, actually. It's a very pretty

car. I think these are are criminally

overlooked. I really really like these

cars, honestly. Especially when you

consider how cheap they are right now.

>> Hey, everyone.

>> Yeah. I mean, we'll see if that changes

things, but I think they're very cool. I

would a part of me would like one,

actually, because I think they're really

cool. I'm very curious about owning one.

But anyway, maybe we'll come back to

that.

>> The the quasi realistic car. I'm trying

to get something genuinely fun for you.

>> Okay.

>> That also can do your realistic stuff.

And I landed here. The Veloster N.

That's excellent.

>> I wanted to go Elantre in, but the

problem is the Elantre ends haven't come

down far enough yet. But the Veloster

ends are out there. This is a

three-door, not a four-door. It's a

three-door, but you can get them DCT or

manual, which means which which version

do you want? Do you want the commute in

the DCT? It's fine. This has the

drivetrain of the Elantra in in a

slightly quirkier package, but they're

not that old.

>> They're overlooked. You can get them for

your budget. You don't have to get the

crazy blue. You could get a more subtle

black. They all have the little red

refinement on it.

>> Do like that crazy blue, though.

>> I love the crazy blue. We had a red one

once on the show and the red one looked

great. It looked really good in more

expensive than it is.

>> I was surprised.

>> Yeah, Hyundai modern tech. This is going

to work. I think the Veloster in is that

interesting merging of you're

discovering yourself as an enthusiast,

but you're not too flashy yet.

>> I think it does both. So, I really like

the Veloster in.

>> And then I thought about you don't know

what impression you're going to give off

at work. You'd like to have some fun,

but you need to to look like you're not

having too much fun. And in your budget,

and I have a wild card for you. It's a

wild card because I'm worried about

maintenance on this.

>> But my wild card for you that I really,

really like

>> is the GLA AMG45 Mercedes.

>> That's actually pretty good.

>> The grown-up hothatch that

>> all-wheel drive. It's MercedesBed. It

looks Here's the thing. First, you talk

about reads for a car. The first read of

this car is you bought a little Mercedes

hatchback.

>> It had to be an inexpensive Mercedes.

You're a classy per I've got a really

nice red one here. I'm showing on

screen. You can get it in a normal

Mercedes color where it's silver or

black. I I hate for you to do that, but

it's also going to blend more if you do.

>> True.

>> The only giveaway here is after you look

at it for a minute, you realize it has a

wing on the back of the hatch. What's

that doing there?

>> Just needs to blend with your insurance

agent.

>> Exactly. But but the thing is here, this

is powerful. It's very fun to drive.

It's a dual clutch. It it this is I've

joked about it before. If you if you've

outgrown the Golf R, you wind up here.

>> This is very classy with incredible

seats, but it is four doors, four seats,

a hatchback, but there is no question

this is just fun. You don't see very

many of them. They don't have second and

third buyers, so they're surprisingly

affordable. They're out there.

>> So, I and I can't speak to the

maintenance on this. I truly can't. And

that's the only part of it that worries

me. But AMG GLA45,

the 10-year-old ones, 8 to 10 year old

ones, that is a fantastic. I'm an adult

and I'm giving an adult work image.

>> Uhhuh. Uhhuh.

>> But I'm also right out of college and

I am going to just interrupt us real

quickly and show you this screen because

I am fascinated by what I have just

discovered. This, my friends, is a 2011

BMW Z4 S drive 35i for 189.

Fantastic yellow.

It's the auto, but come on now. Really?

>> 58,000 miles?

>> Yes.

>> That's nothing for this. There's people

are sleeping on these.

>> Nothing about this I don't like.

>> That is fantast.

And I have a page of them. Look at this.

2015 10-year-old car, 65,000 mi, just

under 20 grand. These cars are being

utterly slept on.

>> Wow. And the the 28i's are the

four-cylinder, but the 35i are the six.

>> Well, this was the second generation

after your car. This was an upgraded

styling, which I like much better on

this.

>> And and I think this to me is a victory

because it's the retractable hard top.

>> Yeah.

>> Really, really cool.

>> 24. That's got a lot of miles, but come

on now.

>> That just means whatever you pick.

>> Yeah. Uh, sorry, I I've interrupted us

completely. I'm utterly fascinated by

the fact that this exists. Anyway,

on what car to go buy because his wants

are too much for how much he wants to

>> I mean, we started this with hyperars.

>> I mean, we all we all have wants that

that Yeah. Nowhere near where we can

what we can spend.

>> Mark is a middle class engineer from

Houston, Texas. triple income household

and he makes the lease. So maybe more

than that, he doesn't know. He's had

beater cars as a mechanic, glorified oil

changer, he says. TL Type S from 2001

and Mercedes E-Class from 1998 where he

learned a wrench on his own cars.

>> He did a lot of repairs apparently.

>> Of course you did. After finishing

college and some time passed, he got his

first new nice car, which is a 2022

GR86, right when it was hot and new. He

loved it. It was automatic. He almost

always has two people in the car with

him. His mother-in-law lives with them.

He and his wife, due to age and other

reasons, so he traded that GR86 for a

2023 WRX.

>> Terrible mistake.

>> He only wishes he could turn back the

clock. That was the wrong idea. He said,

"Three trips to the dealership in two

months and then it got stolen at the

dealership." Okay, time to get out of

that car. That's

>> Go to where the cars are, right? You

want to steal a car? Go to where the

cars are. Where are all the cars? Okay,

I I have the ability to break into a

car. Where are all the cars? Okay, so he

he he's traded that in. Time to get out

of that car and got his fiance at the

time, but now wife's Outback. So, he has

an Outback. Then he customorded a 2024

Mustang GT. Thought, all right, I'm

going to move beyond the G86. I'm going

to do that idea, but bigger.

>> Loved the engine. He tracked it just

like he did with the 86. And then the

reality of weight dawned because

tracking the Mustang

cost him a staggering amount compared to

the 86. And he kept feeling like he was

breaking it. He said body panels of the

interior were literally falling apart

due to the stresses of tracking it.

Something he never had happen with the

86 and the consumables on the 86 were

maybe half as much as they were on that

Mustang. So he sat there going, "That

doesn't work." So, he traded he realized

he needed to get out of that along the

way. Traded the Outback for a Daily

Driver 24 Tacoma. The Mustang got

swapped out for his mother-in-law who

got a Lexus RX. So, now the Mustang is

gone. I

>> mean, he didn't swap a car for his

mother-in-law, but

>> No, no, no, no. Sorry. You're right.

You're right. The mother-in-law stayed.

>> The mother-in-law was there.

>> They swapped the Mustang out

>> and they got for his mother-in-law.

You're right. I didn't do that right.

The Lexus RX. The mother-in-law is now

driving a Lexus RX and apparently really

liking it. So, there you go.

>> Gotcha. All right. It's a Mark's

request. His He's a big numbers guy.

He's into reliability. He says within

the next three years, he can afford a

car as long as it's $100,000 or lower,

>> but he's got to wait 3 years to be able

to afford that much.

>> Correct.

>> Yeah.

>> He doesn't want to wait that long.

>> Of course you don't. I mean, I I feel

you. You shouldn't. I mean, we're not

guys that are good about the waiting for

the car.

>> He can't wait. If he were to wait less

than one year, he can get something 20

to $40,000 depending if he and his wife

have a baby.

>> Okay. He likes to track his cars as

we've established and his commute is 40

to 60 minutes for days in the office in

Houston.

>> Okay.

>> Mark admits he's a car addict. He loves

modern engineering and manufacturing,

but he tends to have a strong urge to

buy new and reliable cars due to

experience. But you didn't buy a new and

reliable car. You bought a new and

panel's popping off car.

>> Even Well, you were tracking it, but

still that doesn't happen.

>> It shouldn't happen. I agree. Yes. He

misses the GR86, but wishes it had the

Mustang V8. He's 6'3", wide shouldered,

so cars like the new Miata, he just

doesn't fit into with the top up.

>> Definitely not. Yes,

>> we definitely know that he really likes

the idea of being able to sit in a car

for a long time if finances ever change.

He's risk averse to high maintenance

costs.

>> Okay.

>> So, do we think he should push for

something on the Sooner end for fun,

like the Zcar? Lots of discounts

on those big time. Yeah. or another 86.

He said he knows he'd be satisfied by

that. Or maybe give the Mustang a second

look with a dark horse. Hopefully, it's

built better and the steering isn't as

light as an F-150.

>> Um, sorry. Let's just stop there real

quick. We'll move on.

>> Mark, I I I hate to say this, the Dark

Horse is a worse Mustang.

>> It is a worse Mustang. I I have never

And you can watch our piece on it. We

drove it against the Nismo Z, which we

actually liked quite a bit, and the

Supra. Uh, you could find, yes, a big

discount on the currency, even the Nismo

is the one you want. You could get a

Supra. But the the thing about the

Darkhorse is it felt bigger with less

steering feel than I was expecting. And

it may be some of the least steering

field I've ever encountered. So sadly,

the Darkhorse is I mean, I think we

instantly agree is right out, but only.

>> Well, he could take it to Shelby and add

$225,000, right?

>> Yes, he could.

>> To get a heavier

>> Snake R whatever they're calling it.

It's a,000 horsepower. Is that something

like that? Yeah. or wait 850 horsepower.

trying. Yeah.

like an LC500 Lexus or a Corvette. Maybe

a used 992."

Everybody, everybody listening, you have

the hole you throw your money down.

>> The the thing where if a financial

planner zoomed out on your life, they'd

be like, "What are you doing over there?

This is all fine, you idiot. That what?

What on earth? The thing that makes no

sense. You could collect figurines. You

could be a comic person. I don't care.

We You have something that makes

absolutely zero sense for you to spend

that much money on. Whatever that amount

is. I don't care if you make minimum

wage and barely get by. You are still

wasting money on something that it's

like, what am I doing? And for us, and

for many of you listening, that's cars.

I I I look at the cars that I have in my

life versus the cars of all of my

neighbors. And I know most of my

neighbors in Park City are far better

off on paper than I am, but I sure throw

it down with the cars. The the the whole

of the money. I mean, my yard doesn't

look great. My house doesn't look great.

The cars are ridiculous. I have

neighbors stop me like, "What is it that

you do?" Well, it's clearly not take

care of my house very well. But anyway,

I have nice cars. That's the whole where

my money goes down. And Mark, we relate.

Yes. If Mark waits and spends on a

nicely optioned Corvette, his thought is

that he could use more of a down payment

to upgrade his house or more of that to

>> upgrade his house.

>> Sell it and use it as down payment. Got

it. Okay. Yeah. All right.

>> He says his house is a 2,000 foot home

with a two-car garage. It's really just

one car garage. There's probably a lot

of stuff in there. Or you have a second

office in there, maybe. But with three

cars now, he says one or two will be on

the side of the road. M.

>> So maybe doesn't want something as

precious as $100,000 sports car or a

Lexus sitting out there. So assuming he

will keep his home. He did renovations

by himself.

>> Interesting. Good.

>> Do we see a sweet spot for this

situation? Good news is Mark. Yes, I do.

>> Okay, good.

>> He's not a huge fan of used cars. You're

going to have to get over that.

>> But he didn't know he didn't know if his

best option would be something like a

986.2 Cayman

>> or something like that. Any four-door

cars he can think of are compromised. Or

maybe he's just biased and he really

wants a twodoor with back seats. He says

back seats are nice.

>> Yes, they are.

>> I have your car. Have your cars.

>> Excellent.

>> I don't think you're ready. Maybe you're

ready.

>> I'm probably not. I'm looking forward to

>> It's actually one car, two generations,

different variants. Pick your variant.

Pick any of them. Pick all of them. I

think you should go get yourself a BMW

M2.

>> I I get it. I do get it.

>> It is sensible. On one hand, it's got

back seats. It's twodoor, but you said

back seats are useful.

>> Mhm.

>> Sensible. It It looks like a car. It

acts like a car. It's just

It's interesting. You said you like to

track your cars. Plenty of people track

their M2s and very well. Design, the

competition, that's it's designed for

tracking. True, true, true.

>> You said consumables are an issue.

>> You'll experience consumables at the

same level of the Mustang. Yes.

>> But I don't know that you're going to be

tracking too much because we're going to

go look used cars because if you did

decide to go new, you're going to be

paying 75,000 plus. Even though I really

do want to point you in this direction.

It's not the 100,000. So you don't have

to wait.

>> But it's not long. Yeah.

>> It's not the 40 maybe 50 that would be

the F87 that prior generation BMW M2

that I showed you. So what if you could

find a used new one?

>> I mean the new G87 generation.

>> Oh, somebody got rid of it already.

Okay. Sure. Yeah. The brand new boxy one

that I got to admit I don't think is

very good looking. But it is new and it

is quite fast.

>> It's larger. It's fast.

>> It's very fast. Very precise handling.

>> True.

>> Lots of power. Great for track use. As a

matter of fact, market's designed for

track use. Both of these are. I mean, I

want you to have the F87 M2CS, but those

are 100 grand and you're going to have

to wait. So, let's go get one of these

now. Save some money. Spend 60 65

>> and it's in line with some of the other

kinds of things you were thinking about,

but you can drive this to the store.

It's got a trunk. It's got a back seat.

It's got space for at least three people

comfortably. I'll bet you you'd fit.

I'll bet you you'd like it. Go look at

all of the M2s from 2016 to now. All

both generations.

>> Yeah, that's good.

>> There's options. There's lots of options

there.

>> Lots of options.

>> That's good.

>> Pick an M2. Pick this F87. As I said,

pick the new G87

M2. That is, it lives in a weird sweet

spot.

>> It's not Mustang. It's not big, heavy

Mustang and Camaro.

>> It's not a Corvette.

>> It's not a Porsche. It's not a Boxster.

That's not That's good.

>> It lives in this weird spot because

track use car. It's just a car. It's

just a car, but it's a fun car.

>> That's very good. I think you've done

very well. Possibly better than I've

done. But I've got I've got a few for

you. Let's go into them. Mark, I'm going

to start right here. You wanted a

Mustang. No, you don't. What you really

want is a C7 Corvette.

>> No, you don't. You talked about the 86

with more power. That's pretty much the

C7 Corvette. The dynamics are connected.

They're not the same, but like the

dynamics that you experienced in the 86,

if those start getting ramped up, you

wind up in something that feels kind of

like what the C7 does. Now, I will say

you're wanting affordable. You're

wanting something you can park on the

street and you know is just going to

run. I really do have to say maybe you

should just go get another 86.

But if we are moving on from that

because again, it's going to work as a

daily. You already liked it. You wish

you hadn't gotten rid of it. It it it

doesn't have high consumables for

tracking. I think there's a lot of

reasons you go back, but this is what

you're hoping the dark horse will be

>> and you can get them pretty much right

now. Just go get a C7.

>> The Darkhorse is not what you think the

Darkhorse is.

>> Yes,

>> it's not what you hope and think it'll

be.

>> Unfortunately, not just isn't.

>> And so these things can track

wonderfully. Even you get yourself a

base Corvette with the right suspension

setup and it'll be a wonderful track

car, but it's also a fantastic daily.

The thing that often gets overlooked

about C7s or just Corvettes in general,

but C7s especially is they're great

dailies. Tons of space to sit in, lots

of cargo space. The suspension setup is

super easy for any commute on the

planet. You're in Houston. These will

have great air conditioners.

>> Big old Chevy V8 sitting in traffic.

>> We're buying our car based solely on the

air conditioners power.

>> Hey, I grew up in Houston. This is going

to get it done, my friend.

>> Yes, it will. So, I I this is my

favorite choice for you is a C7

Corvette. And I also think you may say

I'm not a Corvette person, but the other

thing about a C8, pardon me, a C7

Corvette in Houston is you can park this

on the curb and it's not exotic enough

to mess with.

>> It's a C7 Corvette. It's a nice car.

>> It's a blast freezer powered by a V8.

>> Exactly. It's a nice car, but it's not

like I should go bother that car. It's a

C7 Corvette. So, that is my favorite for

you. You had some others you brought up

that I want to talk through plus a

couple wild cards I want to get into

madness because the question I have for

you Mark is where's the line between I

want nice because you do and I really do

want to track this and I don't know

that's a sliding scale even on the

things you've listed for us. So I don't

really know where we are here. I feel

like the C7 is the nice match of both.

But the LC500 you brought up

>> is still a really sexy car. It's an

incredible car and if you get the early

ones, they're about 50 grand now.

>> Are they really down? They're down

there.

>> So, you could get yourself an LC500.

This is a fantastic commute, go anywhere

car, these cars. Now, this is if you

don't want to track much cuz I don't

really want to track this. This is not a

track car. Can it do it? Yes. Should you

be doing it? Probably not. Okay. The the

the the genius about this car is just

enjoying it. and you could drive it

around Houston to a nice dinner or you

could go find a back road or you could

take a cross country road trip. LC500

can do all of that.

>> This is my track car. I don't know.

That's why you bought this. Maybe once a

year. This is not a regular thing. So,

that's the thing about the the LC500.

You brought it up. I wanted to mention

>> cool car though. Incredibly cool car.

You know what else keeps coming down a

lot is these guys. The early generation

of the Mercedes GT.

Now, they're not 50 yet. They're 7075.

Even the lower power, the base

>> that's that they're still around there.

You may be able to find a deal on some.

>> Incredible car. We know somebody that

found one for $75,000. We have it coming

up in a new part of our COD piece. It's

actually coming up uh this coming

Thursday. You'll be able to see us drive

Chris's 2017 that he got for $75,000.

That is his daily commute car in

Houston. Mark,

>> phenomenal car. And Mark drive his car.

possibly. He tracked it on code and it

was great. I Let me put it to you this

way. I would definitely track a C7. I

would probably track a a GT Mercedes and

I probably wouldn't ever track an LC500.

That's the perspective. Could you track

this? Yes. Consumables will be high, but

the Mercedes stand up to it. That big V8

burbo is a great engine.

>> You could possibly stretch for one of

these and really like it. But all of

this brings me around to one that is m

that is actually cheaper than this and

merges all of these things. I think the

C7 is still the answer because you could

do it right now with your budget. But

you realize this is the show's C8

Corvette.

These right now, well now this is

>> high 50s to mid60s. That's what they

cost. The early versions of the C8 and

they are a phenomenal car for

everything. Again, Chevy V8, so good air

conditioner. They they're very

comfortable. They're very modern.

They've got tons of usability.

>> You could track this anytime you want.

So, I think the C8 and again, you're

going to have to spend about 60 grand.

You were talking 20 to 40 if you go now.

I'm above your budget. The C7s wouldn't

be, but the C8 might be worth the

stretch. Get yourself a used one versus

ordering a new one. You can get them for

the low 60s. In fact, we actually have

the shows C8 that you're seeing here in

blue with the Apex wheels currently for

sale in the low60s. And I say that

because this is what they cost.

>> Yeah.

>> So I think you could get an early C8.

This is a 2021 for I don't know 65 or

below. Certainly high 50s to low 60s is

where those early ones live. And it is

much better car than you even think it

is. So that's a little offkilter because

I think the answer from my perspective

is C7, but a little bit of a stretch.

You get a C8.

from Trent L who writes to us about

sports car road noise. Is the road noise

pretty much every sports car or just

Trents?

>> He got an F87 M2. Something you don't

pick up on as much during a test drive

is road and exhaust noise. Yep.

>> The amount of tire noise is more than he

was expecting. There's also exhaust

drone at 3,000 RPM enough so that he's

thinking about doing something about

both of these issues.

>> Other than that, he really loves getting

to know this car and its personality.

It's his first sportsoriented car. So,

does he need to reset his expectations?

Are all sports cars like this? Or from

our experience, is this more specific to

the M2? I don't remember normal M2s

having that much road noise. Now, it is

certainly more because it's a

performance car. Certainly, Trent,

>> I you need to check your tires. You need

to check the age of your tires. And the

wear as tires wear, they just get

noisier.

>> They do.

>> You also please note the the places

where you drive on. What kind of road

surface is it? Is it chip seal? Because

that's just going to be noisy in any

car. Is it smooth asphalt? Is it

concrete? Do things change? But your

tires, again, as they wear out, when you

switch tires, it's going to be night and

day. A brand new set of tires, things

will quiet down. Even on a performance

set of tires, I think you're going to

notice a big difference. Exhaust, I

think you're maybe a little bit hyper

tuned to it. But again, you bought an

M2.

>> Yeah, it's going to have a throatier,

more interesting exhaust note, and a lot

of people like that. So, I think that's

something if you want a quiet exhaust,

you could look into that. But hopefully

the stock exhaust is still just that.

But if you feel like it's a real

problem, you might want to have that

checked just to make sure there isn't a

hole in your exhaust. Something damaged.

>> That's my question is, do you know for

sure you have the stock exhaust on the

car because a lot of people put

aftermarket exhaust on that car and some

of them are subtle looking. So, do you

have the stock exhaust? You need to

check that first off. But also, you

don't tell us what you've come out of.

You said this is your first ever

sportsoriented car. That suggests to me

you've never had anything close to this.

>> Mhm.

>> And instantly you're going to go up in

increase in noise because of performance

tires and performance exhaust. Even if

you get the quietest car out there in

that world, you're still going to notice

a difference. And I'll tell you one

thing weird. I on my street in my

neighborhood, there's a few people that

have Model Y's. Okay, Model Y's are

heavy,

>> but they're electric, so they have no

noise theoretically, but they're heavy

and they run on performance tires.

It's interesting to me that the Model Y

going down my street is as loud as any

gas car going down my street. And that

is because of wind noise and tire noise.

>> So performance starts to bring in more

noise. So you're going to have that no

matter what. So it's not just you, but

to Paul's point, check the age of your

tires. As tires wear out, they get super

loud. And make sure that exhaust is

stock. Daniel is asking for a fun manual

yearround fun car. Would we pick the

Chevy SS or the Mitsubishi Evo 10? Two

cars that I love. So, I'm going to speak

to this real quickly. Daniel, my first

question for you is you're talking about

a yearround fun car. Do you get bad

weather? Do you get snow? Now, I'm

perfectly happy driving a rearwheel

drive car in the snow. You've done it as

well. We've run good winter tires from

Fredstein and others. And you can run a

rear wheel drive car in the snow. And

the Chevy SS is a fantastic modern car.

And I would say absolutely drive that.

But if you are a person who's getting a

lot of snow or you have some

questionable roads, I would go Evo 10,

which I love, as long as you can find

one close to stock. It's getting harder

and harder to find one stock.

>> And when you see it, it's sort of like

it's like an NSX.

>> Get like the last year, I think it was

2015, they don't have the good seats

anymore. So, you need to get good seats

and close to stock. And I would

recommend the manual transmission for

reliability over the DCT. Even though

that the the dual clutch, whatever they

called it, it actually was good because

it had a sixth gear, which quieted it

down on the highway.

>> Mhm.

>> If you're going to put a family in this

Chevy SS, if this is you and you just

like four doors and some fun, then I'm

going to say Evo 10. That is, uh, if

money is no object, no, if weather's no

object, money is going to be about the

same. Finding an Evo 10, money is no

object. We're going back to hyper car.

>> I've never heard of weather is no

object.

>> Weather's no object for sure. Chevy SS

is the better like other people are

going to experience this car. The Evo 10

is pretty much for you and that's

awesome.

>> Interesting question over here on

Facebook from Kyle Bliss asking if the

CVT was good enough to get banned in

motorsports and theoretically can

achieve maximum efficiency in both MPG

and power. Why do CVTs generally suck?

>> You're right. I mean they they do. Yes.

They generally suck and they

specifically suck. The cars they're in

don't get any better MPG than their

contemporaries. You you won't find a CVT

anywhere near anything fun or horsepower

related. So what gives Kyle is a

confused manual driver. You mentioned

motorsports and my research showed Kyle

the only CVT that was in used in

motorsports. This might be in other

classes of racing and other cars, but I

found the 1993 Williams FW15C. That was

the the Williams car that had all that

crazy tech, adapted

>> adaptive suspension, all the stuff. And

it used a CVT, but it came down to the

rule book that stated F1 cars, the

recipe, the formula stated cars had to

have between four and seven gears, which

rules it out right away. But also, at

the time, the general thinking was that

>> CVTs were not robust enough to handle

the kind of stress and output that an F1

engine puts out. It's very different

than a road car. Sure. And so they

simply said, well, it's not part of not

part of the formula, not part of the

recipe. And so they were just simply

banned

>> just because of that. But you said

maximum efficiency in both MPG and

power.

>> I don't like them because it makes

strange noises and makes the engine do

strange things at strange times. Agreed.

>> Power when I'm not asking for it. And it

doesn't have power when I am. And yeah,

MPG maybe, but there's cars that get

great MPG with normal gears, but mostly

it's the driving experience. It it

upsets you. The engine is revving really

hard and it it doesn't have that normal

comfortable kind of smooth driving

experience. EVs have a good smooth

experience.

>> Absolutely. Yeah. Everybody is used to

gear shifts and understands the motions

of a car, but CVTs,

I just they they don't bring out the

performance of a car. And from a

longevity standpoint, I still don't

think they're there either. The the MPG

benefit doesn't seem to be high enough,

but they are tuned for MPG. The entire

purpose of a CVT in any car you can

think of is for efficiency.

>> Yeah. And so as a result, you have a a

system that if you are trying to drive

it for fun, you are fundamentally

working against its programming. It's

designed to just get you efficiency and

now you're trying to ring its neck to

get power and you have a system that

you're working in exact contrast to. I

think if you sat down, and I am not this

person, but if you sat down and you did

it a CVT and its entire purpose was go

as fast as possible, that was its whole

purpose. It would probably operate very

differently if that was the brains you

gave it.

>> And a race driver wouldn't matter

because a race driver doesn't care about

feel. A race driver just wants fast. I

don't care how the gearbox goes as long

as it gives me all the power all the

time. And if you could exactly if you

could get a CVT to just think about

power,

>> then you'd be in an interesting place.

But this actually connects us to another

question that I want to talk about real

quickly. And that was Ted Adam Green

asking about the WRX because he said

when we first did the podcast his

comment was you couldn't listen to three

episodes without us recommending a WRX

and now we rarely do. What has changed?

I have on screen here a 2007 WRX

available in both the cool looking

actual sedan and the hatchback.

>> Yeah.

>> All right. 2007 is around the time we

started the show which is why I bring it

up. We started our actual everyday

driver show. It was seven more years

till we started the podcast. Okay. But

by the time we started the podcast,

these were seven-year-old cars and were

fairly inexpensive. And the ones before

this, which were a little bit better

looking than these Hawkeye versions, I

never really like that version, were

actually surprisingly affordable. So,

they weren't that old and they were very

affordable. And you could get them in

manual transmission or actual automatics

in hatchback or sedan, normal cars. Jump

forward a decade.

They come in CVTs if you don't want a

manual.

Yeah.

>> And most of the manuals are on specs

that you don't really want.

>> The premium, the upper level spec is CVT

only. Now, back to the prior question

about the CVT, probably the best tuned

performance CVT I've driven. I still

don't like it, but it is the best tuned

one for performance I've ever driven.

Okay. Among the bad ones, you're the

best.

>> Among the crappy cars,

>> yes,

>> you're the best.

>> So, but no hatchback. and they'd gotten

pretty expensive. And while they've

gotten expensive, the problem is other

stuff has worked its way into the

market, specifically Hyundai with the

Elantre N.

The money you're spending for the WRX

you want right now gets you into an

Elantre N, which is excellent, and might

get you into a GR Corolla or a Civic

Type R, both of which are more fun to

drive than a WRX.

>> This is the problem. More fun stuff has

come along in the same price point. and

the manual transmission and hatchback

versions that made the WRX really stand

out no longer exist.

>> If we had done Carcl conclusions, we

would be going another 30 minutes at

least. We're approaching two hours now.
