A manual transmission is a type of car transmission where you have to change gears yourself using a stick and a pedal. It gives you more control over how the car drives.
Bands are parts inside an automatic transmission that help the car change gears smoothly. They work by holding certain parts in place when it's time to shift gears.

Seals are parts that keep the fluid inside the transmission from leaking out. They help the transmission work properly by keeping everything sealed tight.
Transmission oil is a special fluid that helps your car's gears work smoothly. It keeps everything cool and clean inside the transmission, which is important for the car to run well.

money on car repairs and put more money back in your wallet yeah you found the
right channel four decades of experience and I am a licensed holder for
light truck and passenger vehicles and also the big stuff yeah big riggers
highway coaches equipment diesel and HVAC heating ventilation and air
conditioning on your automobile mostly air conditioning especially that's one
of my fortes I really I don't know what it is but I kind of hooked on to that
many years ago I enjoy working on vehicle air conditioning well let's jump
into what we have going on this morning remember everything we talk about lives
at our website it's the biggest drawer in our toolbox so when you land on the
homepage you'll see all the logos for our program partners and recommended
businesses that are all vetted and have my seal of approval they've been a part
of car connection radio for a number of years and we wrapped up 31 years on
radio with our morning broadcast our early Saturday morning broadcast car
connection live so it's live automotive call-in program so these are not program
partners that are brand spanking new out of the gate but if you are a business
owner in the Niagara region or anywhere north south east and west on this
planet you could be part of this podcast and also a part of our YouTube channel
which is growing steadily now and what you learn on our YouTube channel are
always five things the fundamental basics of vehicle ownership and maintenance
what it is where it is how it works how it breaks and what could you have learned
or gained knowledge of in order for things not to break and spending money
unnecessarily on repairs that you could have kind of just walked right on by
as you would know so that's what you learn on our YouTube channel we're not
building hot rods custom rods or anything like that we're working on
vehicles and all the basics whether they're 25 years old 10 years old or five
years old the basic fundamentals do not change and that's what you need to know
do not be intimidated by the automobile they all have unless it's
electric and we're not talking about any of that today but we will cover it
absolutely I have done a lot of research on electric vehicles and how they
affect the environment and you will be when we do that program you'll be shocked
and odd all at the same time so as my professor always would say motor mouth
always always always do your own homework not someone else's not hear say
rumor and popular opinion get down to business roll up your sleeves and do
your own research yeah so internal combustion engines ice is what we call
it is the acronym nothing really change they have to have oxygen they have to
have fuel they have to have air delivery they have to have fuel delivery
somehow there has to be spark spark letters in there somewhere in order to
get engine running so even looking at the accessories inside a vehicle all the
functions are the same 25 years ago to today's vehicles it's just how those
accessories operate now that's it the basics are the same you request floor
center dash defrost for the fan to blow you choose what temperature you would
like the cabin air to be hot or cold in the middle medium not too high not too
cold or you choose air conditioning or you shut the darn thing up they all
work the same the same functions are the same functions are the same functions so
that's what we talk about so if you want to learn more about your automobile
which ladies you really you're the one that's in charge you know when we had
our shop on the Hamilton Mountain 85% of our clientele was women back then back
in 19 we opened the doors in 1991 and closed up in 2000 yeah 2000 when yeah I
had some serious health issues with my back I was toasted I could hardly walk
it was bad it was really bad but today you know with taking care of yourself and
looking after things the car is exactly the same you need to look after the
health of the automobile so let's jump in this morning and the car connection is

40 plus years people throw a ton of money down on a car and you got some really
bad maintenance habits that are just sucking up money like crazy and you're
out there trading time for money you know home to work home to work home to

thousand dollar transmission repair which is something we're going to be
talking about this morning we're shifting gears for a little bit this morning's
topic episode is a it's series one episode 60 transmission care myths oh yeah baby I've
heard this one for quite a while and how to avoid a five thousand dollar bill
which is that's a little low now actually quite a bit quite a bit lower than the
national average yeah the national figure is more than that five thousand dollars
to fix your transmission is actually that's like getting a coupon today so we're going
to be talking about that today so remember everything we talk about lives at our website
at carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com that is the biggest toolbox in our drawer that's when you
get to the home page all the logos are there for all the businesses that support and back

what else is our merch store when when you purchase motormouth merch and be part of the crew
yeah wear it send us a picture if you will and show it off but you're also helping those
who are struggling with addictions to get to one of the total freedom durian center new york
or total freedom sydney manitoba campuses to deal with that addiction once and for all
those lives are changed there one at a time let's jump right in this morning let's have a
swiggy together i can't cram you all in the carconnection workshop although it would be fun
we may need some uh chicken grease to get the last few popped through the va doors but uh
whatever your favorite morning beverage is raise it high here pass the crayons to your
co-pilot and the leaf bag fold it up like a laptop and take some notes this morning let's
count it down and then we have a swiggy together ready three two one
man that's one of the oz of life don't you think yes siri
also coming up stay tuned because february yep february is uh where people go crazy they do i
experienced it i was running a dealership up in the cambridge area i can't remember the cabin
fever i think they call it i didn't believe in it till it happened till it actually happened but
in february we're going to open the lid on the 30 day fuel savings challenge you know what that's
going to do it's 30 days back to back and there's some there's some demographics i'm working out
because i want to track you guys and gals whoever wants to jump in on it and it's going to be an
honesty thing but i'll tell you what the more honest you are the more money you're going to save
period how about a thousand dollar raise this year how about two cars in the driveway and
you save money on fuel on both cars that could be beyond two thousand dollars this year do you
realize that probably not everything we talk about here uh car connection and on our youtube
channel is all to help you understand your automobile what needs to be done and when and yes it's a
piece of equipment it's not just a car it is a valuable resource to get you to and from and help
you to take care of all those things kids included after school programs weekend programs there's
hockey there's soccer there's baseball there's all this stuff and you know music lessons the whole
deal could you do without your car for 30 days how about 60 days how about 90 days are you ready
to snap yeah exactly that's what we're teaching you mileage doesn't mean anything age does not mean
anything to an automobile if you treat it like a piece of equipment and not like a discard
discardable recycle recyclable component you put out at the curb and that reminds me it is
curb day to the coin yeah we got to go to the coin put the trash out yeah it's not i keep vehicles
15 to 20 years how do i do it because i got what the best one off the line absolutely not but if
you stay tuned you follow us you click on the links top right hand corner of our home page
follow us and get into it you can give yourself a substantial raise in 2026 we haven't hit q1 yet
so there's lots of time to get organized prepare a plan because it's not that we plan to fail
as humans it's always that we fail to plan that's exactly the problem all right so let's jump in
February put that on your calendar 30 day fuel savings challenge
and then the following 30 days you're going to do 30 days and that's your you're going to have some
homework and honesty has to play into it and then when you finish that 30 days there's another 30
days and that is going to be the window that gathers the statistics that will blow your mind
because the first 30 days is going to show you how much money you're throwing out the car window
while you're going down the highway just throwing it away or when you get home head to the bathroom
is my professor would say and just lift the lid and just keep throwing that money in and flushing
till it's all gone the next 30 days is going to of the fuel savings challenge is going to show you
how much money you have been wasting and throwing down the toilet or out the window that could be
in back in your wallet that could be vacation money where the vacation is paid for car connection
brought to you by Niagara block at 5000 Montrose road Niagara Falls building Canada since 1931
building supplies hardscape landscaping materials help you build that special backyard space that
you've always wanted your oasis and I'll tell you I have that I got what I call my quiet space
and I love it in the summer it took two years to take care of it because I needed a landscaper that
could make it happen in because that's what you need they can help you with that as well
at Niagara block 5000 Montrose road Niagara Falls check them out on our website click on their link
below their logo connect in February is coming if you want that backyard oasis ready to go you
need to book that landscaper now because the good guys I waited two years for the good guys to come
because I saw their work that they did down in Niagara on the lake and they do a lot of work there
and I'm like that's who I want to come and do it and it was worthwhile absolutely I love sitting
out there listening to the birds in the summer cool morning cup of coffee and just being still
and no one knows I'm even there not even the names they don't even know I'm there it's quiet
peaceful it is so so cool so that's that's what they can help you get done all right did I paint
a picture on that absolutely okay you ready for this one I don't know if you are or not because
this one this this series is probably going to knock you right out of the park yeah so pull your
seatbelt just a little tighter ready say ready motor mouth transmission care myths
and how to avoid a five thousand dollar repair bill
yeah that's a white noise it kind of comes back to
the parking brake yeah the person or persons that says oh you don't need to use that we have
an automatic transmission that same person is the same person that says oh we don't need to
service the transmission yeah it's maintenance free oh yeah baby that's right follow that you
know if you ever want to cross a minefield you know how you do it my professor would say
how do you do it carefully watch somebody else do it okay somebody that made it to the other side
okay exactly you want to take the knowledge and information from someone who's gone before you
so they say you know put that don't no don't step there put that foot there put that foot no just
next to that to the right a little bit and get to the other side of the minefield safely
so listening to things like maintenance free long life not really required
like the parking brake oh yeah they put that yeah I got one in my car too you know I never use it
it doesn't need to be working it yeah we talked about that if you miss the four part series on
four wheel disc brake systems and yesterday I had some estimate audience for you that give you
real world numbers on what that costs to listen to that fella that says we don't need to use the
parking brake it's the same fella that says we don't need to spend money honey servicing the
transmission it's working yeah it'll let us know when it's not working yeah and and and it it has
synthetic oil in it now so you know it's good forever forever am I sounding correct this morning
because that's what I've heard for many decades and guess what happens is yeah we had a chance to
take your vehicle for a road test and yet the transmission is definitely not shifting right
it's slipping it's not going into gear right away yes everything you said you know the harsh up shifts
down shifts feels like you're only your fillings or your partial plate is going to go to the back
of your throat while you're driving yeah the fix you need a transmission what yeah transmission is
done it's she be broken yeah it's done finished well can't you just like you know change the
oil on it or something uh it's it's kind of beyond that yeah it's beyond that there's no
band-aid in a bottle for this one that's it's over in fact uh one of the fellas I'm connected
with here in Fort Erie has a shop um just had to tell a customer that and they he said they are
peeved off big time a they don't have the money to put a transmission into it b they don't have
the money to replace the car they're in a bad you're in a bad spot at that point so everything
that I just said is not true you don't have to service the transmission oh you don't have to
change the oil because it's it it's synthetic oh is that right yeah you just run it until it doesn't
go anymore then you get rid of the car not good sound advice that would be not a person to to
listen to to cross a minefield because you're gonna blow up period none of that information
is true in today's word salad that would be misinformation well I just so love that
I have I have my opinions on that let me tell you I grew up in the country yeah sod buster
milk and cows picking eggs dealing with beef the whole nine yards making hay anyhow transmission
care myths I just gave you a whole bunch of them they require servicing period end of story in fact
2008 rogue was donated to us and we're grateful for that because I'll tell you it runs on farts
in a jar the things them and it has that vehicle has a million problems that could happen to it
one of them the CVT the continuous velocity transmission yeah it's a poo pooer if you don't
look after it and even Dennis my my automotive business owner friend he's a great guy great
guy here in town and he said now those things that transmission is a problem so I did my homework
he's absolutely right but he said you know you're really good with your stuff this thing will probably
go forever under your watch I go it has to I said because you know it's going to help us
reduce our fuel bill and everything I'm not running the fj cruiser around with just one little one
little fella in it that that costs money it's it's weight it's size it's everything there's a time
in a place for that when I'm hauling firewood when I go up to my brother in law's cottage and
to uh take I think we take everything except for you know um the kitchen sink but we have to
because you know it's there's stuff up there you got to take all your stuff so you got to pack
for the packed food and all your supplies so you know the truck gets heavy and when it's heavy
it's costing more fuel so this little hopper although it's an 08 it's almost brand new to me
anyway it's almost brand new but anyhow it's got lots of room the seats go down it's just
fits the bill perfectly but yes in doing my research which I did yeah it has a transmission
problem CVT transmission is is a bet can become a bag of hammers and that's the vehicle that was at
my friend Dennis's shop he says that that's one right there Nile he goes that needs a transmission
ready and I'll he said I'll tell you what the lady is whoo he says matter than a wet hornet
got it he goes they're not good I said well do they take care of it no they just drive it like
they stole it so here's the thing so now I know that 08 I did the research uh what does it need
to to help that transmission hold together number one don't abuse it number two don't
drive it like you stole it number three don't be trying to to to pull a brick poo house with it
or anything other you got to take care of it you're going to have to baby it you're going to have to
be like treat it with kit gloves and make sure that you're ahead of the curve so there's specific
oil that has to go in there I've done that research you got to get it from Nissan I will
be ordering it because we're getting the vehicle ready to get on the road now it's been a bit of
a process but um we're almost there it's getting safe feed but it also needs that transmission
sir so my my research not the fellow that says well you know it's an automatic it's got synthetic
oil it's good for the life of the vehicle oh oh okay and then when it poo poos can you call
them and say hey uh you know that advice you gave me on the transmission um yeah it's it's not working
out well don't blame me I I don't know anything that is the next conversation if I had a nickel
for every time I heard that well my neighbor told me it was an ECM oh so I want you to change the
ECM you sure oh yeah he knows he works on cars all the time then you change it you go well we
changed it the the car is exactly the same what yeah the service you know the money lights back on
and uh it rides exactly the same it's it's still got problems engine misfire oh well can't we just
take that computer back out uh know anything electronic it's plug and play you own it once
it's plugged in 800 bucks what so the phones is neighbor from my shop phone yeah I'm at the shop
you told me to change the ECM it's exactly the same now I just ate 800 bucks well you know I was
just I was just making a suggestion I don't I don't know anything I heard the whole conversation
so don't get trapped in that so I've done my homework on this 2008 Nissan Rogue
yet the CVT transmission is not a friendly it needs to have get ready for this it needs to be
having a full transmission service every 30,000 miles yeah every not maybe you know
if you needed that emergency pizza and chicken wing Saturday with uh 12 of your buddies and you
picked up the bill uh no you might want to you might want to look after that CVT transmission
continuous velocity transmission it it's it's a weird feeling thing it doesn't shift
it just kind of like almost like an elevator it just picks up speed as the uh electromagnetic
motors uh gain momentum it's kind of like it gains momentum but it gets you there
uh but I'm not abusive to anything because you know why you play hard you're going to pay hard
so if you have a vehicle that has an automatic or even a manual transmission
it's not a maintenance free item that's where I'm going to go if you want to get to that point
where you've got you're facing a five thousand dollar bill the transmission smoke something's
broken in or you the oil is all burnt I don't care who's synthetic oil it is that's in that
automatic transmission it gets particles in it there's no service light for that oil going to
come on and say hey time to change your transmission oil but that is a huge component wouldn't you say
I would say that it falls into the nova compartment yeah nova means car no go in some other language
did you know that yeah car no go and that's what's going to happen car no go it doesn't move
and then you'll find out that you should have been servicing it all along and then you're going
looking at the person that said it didn't need a service it's an automatic transmission it picks
the the pill for everything and now you've got to buy a transmission which is going to cost you
way beyond five thousand dollars I'm going to tell you that that's that's a happy day if you can
get that burnt transmission out damaged transmission out of there and another one in for five grand
I don't know we'll get some numbers on that I can get some numbers we'll get some exact
numbers I'll pick a couple of models and I'll get some of my contacts that rebuild transmissions
in St. Catherine's to give us some numbers so let's do that let's take a real look at the real
numbers and stop listening to the guys saying you don't need to service it you go until you can't
well I can't afford to do that and I am my own mechanic not me I changed my transmission oil
the FJ cruiser last summer and it was a bit of a treat but now I know how to do it and what's
what it takes to do it and you know what that transmission is 13 and a half thousand dollars
just saying five would be pretty cheap that'd be like a coupon a bogo buy one get one free
so here's the thing back to the 08 road it should be having a transmission service every 30,000 miles
50k right right something like that every 50k in Canada is what the Canadian side set
of that for servicing every 50,000 kilometers it has 120k so it should have had already how many
almost three so it's getting a service and then it will get that service before 50,000k
I will punch it in to my maintenance folder for 40,000k sooner than later when you push things
to the limit that's when expensive stuff breaks so let's not just think that the automatic transmission
or manual transmission all the manual transmissions around car connection workshop get a drain and
fill why there's moving components metal components there's clutches there's bands there's seals
they can shrink they can crack and all kinds of things happen because the oil's contaminated
I don't care whose synthetic oil it is it gets contaminated it doesn't have a monitor
it's not going to flag the dash and tell you there's a problem with the transmission oil
it's a service that has to be logged in and anyone who tells you that it does not need to be done
it needs to be done even the transmissions that are sealed that do not have a dipstick
it needs a transmission service the oil
delegates it breaks down it's heated and cooled and heated and cooled and heated and cooled
and gets hot enough to make your french fries to make fries did you want gravy with that apple pie
perhaps um yeah so dude that says well it's synthetic oil okay so what go and check out
the oil geek on youtube lake speed junior does a great job with the science behind all oils
go and get some knowledge because synthetic oil conventional oil it doesn't matter what
flavor it is it picks up particles it picks up metal particles it gets broken down what we call
thermal breakdown from being constantly heated and cooled and heated and cooled the oil breaks down
it is not good forever and ever amen to stay in that transmission manual transmission or not
or automatic doesn't matter it's picking up particles the oil is breaking down and then the
viscosity changes that protects the moving components now you have even more wear and tear
taking place then you add in your amazing driving habits out there on top of that the jackrabbit
starts the 40k over the suggested driving limit speed limit and you're doing that every day day in
day out day in day out raise the dudes to the other traffic light all to hammer on the brakes
stand the vehicle almost on its nose like a freaking periwet and you do that day in day out day in
day out and you expect nothing to happen that's a pipe tree that's living in a major fantasy world
these automobiles are high tech today there's more electronics inside your automatic transmission
than what powers up the space shuttle and i'm not making that up you fact check me go ahead and fact
check me on that because that'll blow your mind computers electronic servos and solenoids it's
crazy now when we take the pan off the automatic transmission and see the wiring harnesses and
solenoids and sensors and everything it's crazy when you look in there you go wow things have
really changed yeah those solenoids if the oil's not cooling them they overheat then the transmission
doesn't shift right and you blow the thing up so what's your takeaway today well i will do my
homework and i will get some estimates put together on what it costs i'll just randomly pick three
common vehicles and we'll get a price on what it's going to cost to replace the transmission because
many of the repairs don't happen with the transmission in the car sometimes you get lucky it might be a
a servo it might be a solenoid it may be a component that they can get to by removing the
oil pan on the transmission but here's the thing at the end of the day there is not one component
now listen closely i'm not your neighbor but i have 40 plus years of experience fixing automobiles
and the like there's not one item on your automobile that's not serviceable
that's maintenance free not one absolutely not one period so if you're getting that advice from
somebody it's kind of like this smile nod don't be disrespectful go do your homework and that's
what car connection is all about that's like anything in life our program partners go and
talk to them they're knowledgeable they know their craft there's no rumor hearsay and popular
opinion with them they love their craft they know their craft and they're not going to steer you wrong
on purpose they might trip you i'm just kidding but that's those are the people you want to work
with they can help you to understand what you don't understand so that when you understand
you'll see that what you have been doing you need to change it before it ends up cost continuing
to cost you more money because if you can put more money back in your wallet keep your vehicle
long life vehicle and who cares what it's worth curbside i don't care if you know my 99 Honda Civic
DX is worth 800 bucks so what if i got to replace it tomorrow is it work can i go get another one
for 800 bucks that's the way you have to start thinking so you're smarter than the cat is that
i don't care how much mileage on it is on it or years or what it's worth curbside well here's
what i've heard i'm not putting any more money in it you know that that the repair bill is worth
more than the car is it well let's write let's break this down for you to replace that vehicle
today with the same so oranges to oranges right let's come through the comparison
what is that going to cost you today and what's the monthly payment with interest
then come and tell me
you know you with the conversation usually goes yeah go ahead and fix it exactly every time
i tell them go to you know this weekend take your honey on a date and go car shopping
and then give me a call next week let me know what you want to do i can't keep it around here
forever at shop yeah we might have to start planting flowers in it and then they i get the
phone call it's usually the wife yeah go ahead and fix it nyle everything that's on the list
thank you let us know when it's ready bam they got the reality check and that's what i'm saying to you
is if you grab hold of my coat tails i'll get you there we'll put money back in your wallet
you'll have money that you can get a financial plan put together and have that money working harder
for you putting it towards letting it grow putting it towards the purchase of that next vehicle
but you do not have to get rid of your vehicle because of somebody else telling you oh it's
got high mileage i love buying high mileage cars do you know why because if it ain't broke at 400
thousand kilometers it's a good one that means you've already pre-destructed it for me you've
driven it like a bat out of hell for how many years and if things still alive
and there's nothing major wrong with it that's a goodie it's pre-destructed and we're gonna
we'll talk about vehicle warranties as well it's such a freaking scam we're gonna we're gonna crack
that one open pandora's box and unpack it pull over and park and drill down on that for sure
but your automatic transmission your manual transmission the end of the story is
if you've got a lot of money in your pocket that's burning a hole through your pocket to spend
your transmission will take it out of there for you very quickly it is a serviceable item
regardless of who says what when where and how period it's mechanical it's electronic it has
wear and tear items it the oil becomes destroyed from heating and cooling thermal breakdown
there's no oil on the planet that doesn't suffer thermal breakdown
just say it none don't care who's it is what flavor what manufacturer it thermally
breaks down it has to and it becomes saturated with particles that continue to circulate through
all the components intricate components inside your transmission until it wrecks something
or something wears out i'm just saying there's a lot of money on the table there
transmission care myths oh it's good for life of the vehicle i'll cover that one off
you know what the life of the vehicle is three years 60 000 kilometers if that's the whatever the
warranty is whichever one you hit first you hit the three year mark time or you hit 60 k like i've
i've heard from some people leasing and had to park it for two years and get a used car
because they were already over mileage with another two years to go on the lease
yep that's reality if you missed that show you got to go and grab it because that's a good one
leasing today no thanks unless you're a corporation you can't write it off
that's right so you know why would you want to drive something that you can't really afford
to finance to impress people you may not even know or even like that's right well till tomorrow
morning i've given you some food for thought transmissions are real people
and they need real maintenance not only when something's going on if you want to keep it
and you want to keep some mega money in your wallet then you've got to pay some attention
to that area instead of waiting until it breaks and going i think something broke car no go
then you're faced with a huge huge decision to make fix it finance it to fix it or replace it
and finance and pay interest for another five years or what they have going now seven year loans

About this episode
Transmission maintenance myths can lead to costly repairs, with some estimates suggesting bills over $7,000. This episode dives into common misconceptions about automatic and manual transmissions, emphasizing the importance of regular servicing to avoid catastrophic failures. Host Dial Motormouth Jenkins shares personal anecdotes and practical advice, highlighting the need for proactive care rather than reactive fixes. With over 40 years of experience, Jenkins encourages listeners to take charge of their vehicle maintenance and avoid the pitfalls of misinformation.
Most drivers are told their transmission is "sealed for life" and doesn't need servicing. "That advice has destroyed more transmissions than worn out-clutches ever have. You've been sold one of the most expensive myths in the auto industry. Today I'm going to explain why that lie turns a $300 service into a $7,000 repair"
In today's episode, I break down how transmissions actually work - automatic, manual, and CVT - and why fluid service is not optional, no matter what your neighbour, spouse, or the internet tells you.
We use the 2008 Nissan Rogue CVT as a real=world example of what happens when transmission maintenance is ignored. These units don't fail because their "bad by design" - they fail because they're not serviced on schedule.
we'll also talk real numbers:
1) What transmission service actually costs
2) What transmission replacement really costs today
3) Why that old " $5,000 transmission" myth is outdated
4) How skipping maintenance quietly turns a service into a rebuild
If you want your vehicle to last - and avoid a repair bill that can exceed the value of the car- this episode is one every driver needs to hear.
