LIVE
Welcome to another In-Wheel Time Podcast.
It's the In-Wheel Time Car Talk Show today, coming to you from the 43rd annual Houston
Auto Show.
Just ahead, we've got a couple of guests I think you'll be interested in, those big
jacked up trucks, maybe just a mild little makeover of a truck.
We've got the guys to talk to, and we'll have some of our popular features as well.
So we hope you'll stay with us.
Howdy, along with Mike out of this World Mars.
We always need more Jeff Zekin.
Chief Engineer David Ainsley is with us today.
I'm Don Armstrong.
Glad you could join us.
We appreciate you taking the time out of your day.
Are you driving down the road?
Are you listening online?
Good.
Thank you very much.
We appreciate it.
This is our third hour today.
We had the bonus hour at the beginning at 9 o'clock before anyone arrived.
Let me tell you something.
We found out really quick, once they opened the doors and they pulled in all of the cars
that are going through the RAM display and the Jeep display.
They opened the doors, had to get out of a jacket.
It's cold, man.
You know, it's cold out there.
So it's a great day to be indoors.
These boys are wearing shorts.
You got a parka on.
I know.
Well, they closed the doors and it's nice and comfy in here, and I'm nice and comfy
in my little parka.
Parka?
You got your mucklucks on down there?
I don't have any mucklucks.
That's David's thing.
That's David's thing.
Mucklucks.
Nobody knows down here.
They don't know what mucklucks are.
Did you ever have mucklucks?
I never had mucklucks.
His microphone's not on.
I think there you go.
There you go.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think you can get shots for that.
Mucklucks.
Mucklucks.
So Larry Baldwin is with us and Marshall Booker is with us as well, Texas Truck Works.
So you work at Texas Truck Works.
I work at Texas Truck Works 17 years now.
17 years.
And they're still not getting shots that will keep you from that.
And you are a customer.
I am.
I'm a customer for almost 15 years, and I help out these kind of events, and we travel
to Moab and do some of the Jeep events, the truck events.
The circuit type thing, yeah.
Absolutely, yeah.
They get to go and have all the fun.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He would be stuck at the store.
And you're stuck back at the store, right?
I'm stuck at the store.
They're playing.
You build when he drives.
Correct.
Exactly.
There you go.
So where are you guys located up at Texas Truck Works?
We're at the back of the Woodlands between the Woodlands and Magnolia.
Okay.
And what road is that?
2978, just south of 1488.
There you go.
I've been up there.
I know about that.
You had a big truck hit a monster truck at one time?
No.
That's the owner, Scott Stevens.
Scott Stevens.
Where's the King Crunch driver?
King Crunch.
His son now drives for Monster Jam, the Thunder Roars truck.
Right, right, right.
The one truck?
Thunder Roars.
Thunder Roars.
Thunder Roars.
Yeah.
Now, you all are coming here next weekend or in two weeks here?
No.
I think the next two weekends.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There'll be a Monster Jam show at the NRG Stadium.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We're across the street over here at NRG Center.
Center.
That's it.
It's just a massive company.
I get lost coming to the parking lot.
It is so big, right?
Yeah, it's huge.
So Larry, let's talk about Texas Truck Works and find out about what you guys do up there.
I know that you don't necessarily do nothing but trucks because you do other things as
well.
Trucks and jeeps are the hot item, but we really do anything.
If you need a commercial fleet work, we do that.
If you need a trailer hitch, you need a set of mudflaps, yeah, anything after market we
do.
What is the number one thing that you guys do that the biggest moneymaker that you have?
Probably bed covers.
Bed covers.
Want to pick up trucks again.
For you to say, well, yeah, we do lifts, lift, tires, wheels, leveling is much more popular
than the lifts.
There's so many trucks leveled.
What a level.
Right.
So air suspensions.
We do a little bit of that for their heavy hauling loads, their helper bags to go in the
back.
The level kit just brings the front end of two inches so that the truck sits flat or
you can lower the rear two inches.
Yeah, I see a lot of them with the back end.
Is that against the law or something?
I don't know.
It doesn't make sense to me.
That's why you're out here.
Yeah, I've seen them though.
Yeah.
So tell me about you and how you got involved in this.
I've always loved four wheel drive jeeps and trucks since I was a little kid, like most
little kids.
And just when I got old enough to, you know, swipe the credit card and, you know, we just
it never ends.
What you start with, oh, I want to change the wheels or tires and then the bumpers and
then lights and, you know, off-road lockers and things like that.
I know all about all of that.
Yes, of course.
Just when you think you're done.
Oh, I think I'm done with it.
You see something else.
Somebody else has.
Oh, I want to.
That doesn't go good with this anymore.
I want to change it out.
I'm a Corvette owner.
I know.
Exactly.
That kind of thing.
Yeah, exactly.
So do you have a real job?
I'm an airline pilot for United.
Yeah.
I'm a captain on the 737 here at Intercontinental.
Well, that's not here.
That's up there.
Here in Houston.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The day that feels like a real job.
I'm going to quit.
So we have fun and do all the Jeep things are able to travel and flexible schedule and
it's a lot of fun.
We've done the Easter Jeep Safari and Moab.
It's always the week before Easter every year is whenever Easter is right.
And it's just Jeep is there with prototypes and all the vendors.
And it's just a good time with off-roading.
We do rock crawling and overlanding, not the mudding.
We don't do all that stuff.
That's a lot.
You break stuff and you're, you're.
I'm just going to say, you've got to get the hose out all the time.
You'll never get it all.
Yeah.
Different type of clientele.
Exactly.
They're out there.
There's a need for it.
But what is your daily driver?
I have a 2014 Jeep that I use and I have a Ram truck that I also drive.
Yeah.
But we have everything we have is Mopar, Stellanus, Dodge and Ram and Jeep.
Yeah.
He also has the new 392 Hemi Jeep.
Right that.
Yeah.
Two of the Jeeps are over at the Texas Truck Works Display.
Okay.
Oh, you got a display here.
Yeah.
We're right on the back here.
On the other side.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, that's handy.
So it's.
One of them.
Huh.
Imagine you being over here by the Jeeps and the Rams and you've got your.
Funny how that works out.
Yeah.
It's funny how that works out.
So.
I've got a brand new.
Theory.
Or theoretically.
Theoretically you do.
I have a brand new Ram 1500 with a Hemi in it.
Got a Hemi in it.
Yes.
And I kind of want to, you know, make it my own.
I want everybody to know.
Hey, that's Don's car truck.
Well, it's dependent on how you're going to use it.
I know.
I know.
But you know, I don't have an unlimited budget here.
And so I think that the first thing I want is I want to get some tires and wheels because
that seems to be the most popular thing to do to make it yourself.
Right.
Again, put a little level kit to bring the front end up two inches than brand new 20s.
Okay.
So how much does it cost to bring the front end up by two inches?
There's different options way to do it, but it's less than a thousand dollars.
Less than a thousand bucks.
Okay.
Got that.
You can go more.
You can go less or thousand bucks is generally speaking.
Yes.
That's it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Now, I don't want to go some, you know, high dollar three piece wheels.
I don't care about that.
You know what I'm talking about?
I'm a regular guy and now I'm going to have to get something bigger.
You know, so I'm going to have to buy some new tires to go with it.
You guys do that too.
Absolutely.
Yes.
And do some 20s with about a 33 inch tall tire.
Depending on whether you don't like rubber band tires.
No.
No, neither.
We're not fans of the 24s to 26s.
That's what I prefer.
This is all this is just me talking.
I was at the Jeep.
Was it a Jeep Wrangler or was it a truck?
I don't remember, but off road it was.
It had smaller wheels.
Of course, they were three piece, but I don't need that.
Just the look is good.
Smaller wheels with big fat tires on it.
Yeah.
I could go anywhere.
Exactly.
That's my smile.
Right.
Right.
And on a Jeep, I'd say do 17s, not do the 20s.
Right.
But still a 33.
But no, 35.
35.
On a Jeep, I want a 35.
Yes.
At least 35, 37 up to 42 inch tires.
I don't want any rubbing.
I don't want to have to do any major modifications yet.
But I want that look, you know.
Yep.
But like I say, if you're doing the truck, the level kit just going to run up down the
highway as good and perfect as they did when you drove it off the lot on the Jeep, you
go a little taller, you make it your own.
But if you still need to run 80 miles an hour to San Antonio and back, you can.
Yeah.
That's what I want.
See, you would need a winch because you're probably going to get stuck.
Right.
We do sell winches.
I am stuck.
I'm stuck on this car show.
That's what I'm stuck on.
So, okay.
So you have guys like me that want to come in there and do that sort of thing.
That is our customer.
Yes.
That is what we do.
Every day, guys.
Yeah.
Wow.
You got started.
Yes, or yeah.
You got to drive it all week and then play on the weekends and you know, be able to drive
it home.
Right.
Do the trails you want to do and join the club.
Absolutely.
The Jeep clubs.
Yeah.
And a customer of mine that used to live in California.
He's moved to Texas with the family business, big business.
And he goes to Arizona with his Jeep.
He's been to Moab.
Sure.
But he goes out there like once a month and does whatever they do.
The trails.
Right.
Rock climbing and stuff like that.
He's got a couple.
They don't look like jeeps.
They look like they're made to do.
They look like they'll hurt you.
Well, that's the beauty of the Jeep is you build it for what you do with it.
Exactly.
If you need to go get groceries or if you want to go climb the mountains and Jeep will do
it.
You know, and don't get me wrong.
I mean, I love brand new Jeeps, but gosh, I'm good with ones got about 35,000 miles on
it.
The person that owned it before, they haven't done a thing to it.
Exactly.
They drove it and changed the oil in it.
That's it.
Right.
That's what I want to start.
So do you have customers that you help like that?
All the time.
Okay.
My question is what is obviously it's more guys than girls coming in.
Not as much as it used to be.
It's catching up.
That's my question.
Absolutely.
What is the balance?
No, is the Jeep girls becoming more and more popular?
And that's why you'll see the pink Jeep running up in the highways.
You go to the Jeep Club events and they'll be 50-50.
Yeah, we do.
We do the trail stuff.
We have multiple Jeeps.
So my wife has been starting to drive some confidence.
She loves it.
And there's women's runs that we do on some trails and you know, some charity events like
that.
Things to do.
But yeah, it's the women are really stepping up on catching us up.
That would be a good interview for a future.
Yeah, some of the Jeep ladies.
Yeah, yeah.
Absolutely.
What's the most popular motor?
Not the 392.
That's that's a weirdo.
That's the thought.
That's that's a dog.
No, I got that.
But the V six or the four, the V six.
And that's when in 2012 when Jeep JK went to that 3.6 finish star, that's when it had
enough power.
It rode good.
It drove good.
And Jeeps really started selling well.
What year is that?
12.
2012.
2012.
And are they still putting that in?
Or is it available?
It's still the same motor.
Yep.
Now there's multiple options there for a long time.
That was the only option.
But now there's the multiples.
We know the 392 392 turbo diesel for a while and the 2.0 liter 2.0 and then the
electric.
Yeah, the four by ease.
Well, that's the thing.
That's a different conversation.
Correct.
You know, you've been talking about maybe parting with your Corvette for a while.
You've been talking about.
Would I go back to a Jeep?
No.
No, I was going to say maybe that's just at it.
Absolutely not.
No, the Corvettes is baby garage cap covered and all that stuff.
Well, it's 25 years old and it's got 35,000 miles on it.
It's okay for now.
Sure, sure.
You know, the only big problem that I have is that left knee to the clutch.
Oh, sure.
Yeah, there's that.
Oh, you, you don't have anything to talk about.
He's wearing shorts.
He's a young man.
He's a young man.
I grew up in the Midwest.
This is, this is a cold outside.
So he's a pilot.
So he's got to have both feet going.
You know, this is true.
Doing barrel rolls.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm good.
I'm going to, I'm going the route of, you know, a Cadillac.
Oh, now you're talking.
A CTS.
You want your creature comforts.
Yeah, absolutely.
That's where I am.
Heated seats.
Yes.
That's where I am at this point in my life.
Something that's, you know, three years old.
I'm good.
I'm good.
Perfect.
I'm not trying to impress anybody, but.
I could see you in a Jeep.
I had a Jeep.
I know.
Long time ago.
Gosh, about 1980.
And I bought it off the showroom floor at Archer.
Okay.
Archer Jeep 159.
Bought it off the showroom floor.
White with a black vinyl interior.
Two door.
Of course, it's all they had back.
Right.
And it had the Pontiac four cylinder engine in it.
Yep.
But it had square headlights and leaf springs.
No, it did not have square headlights.
180.
No.
No.
Not no square head.
Only real jeeps have round headlights.
That's right.
Yeah.
How many years did they put those square headlights in?
2, 3,
7,
8,
9,
9,
9,
9,
9,
9,
9,
10,
And I'm notstreaming my interview at all.
Yeah, what a pain that I had a pickup truck like that. Yep. Yeah, so we've done with that
So do you guys do any engine work? We do if you what kind of engine work?
tuning mainly mainly chips air boxes and things like that a little bit air boxes a little bit of exhaust
More we probably do more engine swaps really engine swaps putting the himmys in the jeeps
Work you take it to him and do I take it to them or do you don't wrench on your own?
I wish I'll mess it up. So I trust you did not say LS
But LS is in jeeps absolutely not
Your side I got a Ford pickup truck hop on an LS engine in
Now well, I could see that yeah, yeah, well, that's another world that I'm not part of that world
Believe it if it comes as a Ford that needs to have a Ford I agree. That's what I'm I'm with you there
Yeah, and I like a coyote engine. Yeah, no, let's do that. Yeah, I'm good with that not that I'm a Ford guy
But we've also done hell cats in jeeps. Yeah, you could put a coyote in the Jeep
That's fine. It's the same bloodline. I got all that exactly. I just can't I can't do that
I'm under agreement with you, but if that's what the customer I know I know it's it's a payday
And I get I get that oh god, no less than it. No
We've been having we're like to do an old stroker engine in them like a GM engine in in older jeeps
You see those are some rock crawlers
Yeah, I would simple to work on you know not no tech or anything
So they're people like those because you can get anything off the shelf well to repair it's true
So people like that too something with carburetor. Oh, exactly. I've got a carburetor
Oh, if you can find anybody that knows how to work on a carburetor, you know, I'm not gonna admit to that
But I've been known to mess with it a time or two. This is the wrong show to find that out
You need to go to a hot rod show or a cruise in exactly all those guys those guys do that in that world more than we do
Absolutely, so you guys go to that that big truck show up at
Codra
Now a long star. Yeah. Yes, okay
So people that are listening that are into trucks you can come in here and get your truck
There's one right over there, right? Yep. Take it right over there do some
Wigs bang magic to it over there. I didn't get your boat. We'll pull them up. You'll pull the boat
Maybe you should get a boat put on a trailer back here exactly and say this is your pack
Well, if you haven't seen our display, we have a
Trailer with three jeeps on I haven't been over there yet. We're gonna go we're gonna go look at that. Yeah, come see us
Yeah, and then you're supposed to follow that up by some come see us come see us
That's right
It's not forget that
Well gents, it's uh, he's waving at you
Well gents, it's been a pleasure appreciate it. Good talk to you guys. Thank you very much a lot of fun great event
We'll be here all week. We'll be here tomorrow, too. We'll come all week. That's all right. Thank you. Awesome. Thank you

We did that at the nine o'clock hour, but this is our third hour of the show
So we've moved some stuff around normally. This would be in our two hour show
But i wanted to give you the story of the week so we can kind of talk about that
Elon musk's space x. Yep
Is considering a potential merger with tesla
As well as an alternative combination with artificial intelligence company x ai
According to bloomberg news
Go i'm just looking at him. Do you go?
They keep the point fingers and i'm putting things
Okay, uh space x and x ai are said to be in discussions to merge ahead of a public offering
Plan this year to bring musk's rockets
Starlink satellites the x social media platform and grok ai chat bot
Under one roof
The space firm has discussed the feasibility of a tie-up
Between space x and e v maker tesla an idea that some investors are pushing according to bloomberg
Discussions are a sign that musk the world's richest man is weighing how to consolidate his empire musk is ceo spacex
and x ai
Which all is controlled which controls x
He also runs tesla tunnel company the boring company and neuro technology firm neural link
Spacex a massive deal may complicate its ipo
But add momentum to efforts to launch data centers into orbit a key goal in the escalating ai race
Against open ai meta platforms and alphabets google. I could see all of this happening
What will happen to tesla? I think tesla will continue, but they my prediction is they're going to stop making the tesla truck
Yeah, probably that is not turned in that or they're going to launch it to be the new
Moon rover either that or put it underneath the blast-off rocket so it could melt and see what's going to happen to it at that point
When they go to when they go to mars they can drive in room
So benjamin miller is joining us today
And he's going to we're going to interview him about the classic car display that's here at nrg
But we're also going to pull him in because uh, we're going to do the hemming sold car weekly roundup
Little thing that we do guess the sold car price, but right after i give you this week's
Recalls including the rivian improperly secured seat belt retractor assemblies. Uh, martha. It won't go in
If not going to feel rivian r1s and the rivian r1t recalled 22 to 26 model years
Ford couldn't go a day without having a ford recall without ford recall
Ford escape and focus 2013 to 2019
Engine block heater may short circuit and cause of fire. We did that last week along with the lincoln and they see
I'm still burning and uh, also the ford explorer and focus so they've expanded it 2019 2016 actually to 2024
Lucid gravity 2025 and 26 review camera image may not display
An instrument panel display failure on every genesis known to man including genesis himself
Um improperly welded door strikers in the nissan ultima frontier kicks and centra 25 to 26
In chevy blazer e v damaged parking brake wiring harness
Martha you smell something burning in here
There's those okay now let's get to the sold cars roundup shall we?
Um
So it's a little game that we play
That i'm going to give you the the model year and the car
And some
Added features tidbits. Yeah, uh, he's going to display it up there for all to see
And you're going to guess the sold car price. Okay, so first up today is a 1965 chevalet corvette
It's got side pipes and it looks like it's got knockoff wheels
They're probably fake and
This is probably not a stock car. My guess is it's a rest or mod that looks really stock
But I don't think it is how much do you think a 65 chevy corvette clean?
It looks black
And it looks stock. How much you think that's sold for
I'll go first. I watch barrett jackson. I'm going to go 75 grand 75 grand. Yes, sir. Mr. Mars. Do you have a guess?
Oh, no, you can't guess can't guess. No, he's yeah, he put up the pictures
Said that he thinks 25 000
25 000
I would say
50 50. Well, it's sold for 63 000. Okay, so we're it's a tweeter between. Yeah, it's a tweeter between
Okay, next one up is jeff's car. All right, this ladies and gentlemen is a 1973 catalac el dorado convertible
Priceless. Yeah, it's priceless and it's has no end to the length of it
Uh, how much do you think something like that would sell for now? This looks like
It's been around the block a couple of times. It's a parade cars with that
It's an official pace car. Yeah, they did it. Yeah, yeah pace car for what the uh, uh, the
Motor week 100 or something somewhere. Okay. He doesn't make any difference. What do you keep those nasty thoughts to yourself?
What do you think that's 73 25 grand?
25 grand. Yeah, jeff heitzman says 31 31
Ben
18
Guess what ben 18 375
You're the man
That's why I pulled you in on and that's why he's got a classic car show. Okay. That's it. All right next up
Let's do a 2014
Porsche panamera. Now, this is the this is the this is the uh, the four door version
Okay, that's the only version but the Porsche panamera. I was like, what year? It's at 2014
So it's 12 years old main thing is it's four doors. It's four doors. I'm thinking
Okay, so what do you think something like that would sell for how many miles don't have the miles
Don't have the miles
I'm gonna go 21 21
David lustre says 59. Okay, 59,000 i'm gonna go
35
Okay, well, I selected this car because of the price it sold for 12,075 dollars
Exactly
I that's what that was my reaction going what?
Okay, next up in 1969
Pontiac gto judge and I will tell you based on the price. It's probably
uh
Original it's it's probably an original it. Yeah, it's probably an original
It's probably had a repaint. It has to be my guess. Yeah
But it looks stock
Pontiac judge, however, it doesn't have those great big things across the wheel openings. Yeah, the uh,
There's a word for it. Yeah, whatever. Um, so 69 Pontiac gto judge 32
32
Did you like to guess I don't have mileage on it 37,000 37,000 ben's going
I'm going higher. I think
70
63,000
29 so everybody was kind of under there. Okay, next up by half next up is a white pickup truck 1997 model year
Chevrolet k
1500 four by four
Yeah, four by four and um, I picked this because it is it is a standard two-door pickup truck
Okay
And it's a 1500 so it's a half ton. It's got a big cover or something on it z 71 whatever whatever
How many miles don't have the miles
I I picked it because
Uh, partially because of the price that it sold for 12,000 12,000 jeff says
17 17
Jeff heisman says 30. Well, he jeff heisman is close 25,358. It's clean. It looks stock
It's got some steps on the side of it. That's about it. Okay next up 1970 Plymouth badakuda
This is probably an all-original car
And it looks like it has not been repainted. It looks completely stock and original
Don't be shy
Okay, tell if it's 440 or 340. I'm gonna go 75 grand. It's got a shaker hood on it. 75. 75
Okay
Next
Anybody
How much 250 jeff heisman says 39,000 it sold for 187,975 dollars
That's why I made it a point to say I think it looks like it may be a all original
Yeah, and it it could be a 440 or I don't know what it is can't really tell
It might be a good big dent in that right quarter. You never see. Yeah, that's it. All right next up
2014 Chevrolet ss
14 Chevy ss
It's a 40 it's a four door
I I did I don't even remember that model, but whatever 2014 Chevy ss
12,000 I don't need to know anymore 12 grand 12 grand
30 30

Uh, George says 12 999. How about 36,750 dollars? Well, heitzman came in at 41 there at the end. Oh, he did
Yeah, and what'd you say been 30? Yeah, yeah, very close. Okay last car on 1963
Lincoln continental convertible. I mean you can you can envision a
Wax figure of kennedy in the back seat 63 Lincoln continental
Uh, it's probably had a repaint. It's probably been redone, but it's still a 63 Lincoln continental
I've had the understanding those things are becoming more popular now and there's not enough to go around
It's got suicide doors, aren't it? Well, it's not this is a two door. It's a convertible
Two door convertible
All right. I'm gonna go 21. I'm just guessing I'm just shooting in the air there 21
They've been all over the place. I'm gonna go
70 you're close
55,600 and 50 dollars

About this episode
The In-Wheel Time Podcast dives into truck modifications with guests from Texas Truck Works, discussing everything from mild makeovers to major upgrades. The hosts explore popular aftermarket options like lift kits, bed covers, and wheels, while sharing personal stories about their own vehicles. The conversation highlights the growing interest in off-roading and the balance of aesthetics versus functionality in truck customization. Listeners will appreciate insights on popular models, customer demographics, and the evolving landscape of truck enthusiasts.
Want a truck or Jeep that turns heads without turning your commute into a chore? We’re live from the Houston Auto Show with the crew from Texas Truckworks to map out upgrades that deliver real value: two-inch leveling kits for a cleaner stance, right-size tires for comfort and grip, and bed covers that earn their keep every single day. We get tactical about wheels that won’t punish ride quality, sidewall that protects on rough roads, and setups that keep your highway manners intact while adding weekend capability.
The conversation goes beyond parts into purpose. We talk building for trails over mud, why overlanding and rock crawling reward preparation, and how clubs help new drivers gain skills without breaking parts. You’ll hear how women are reshaping Jeep culture—leading trail runs, organizing charity rides, and building confident rigs. Then we open the hood on the purist debate around engine swaps, comparing brand-loyal Hemi or Coyote builds with LS conversions, and explain when tuning, exhaust, and cooling upgrades are smarter than chasing peak horsepower.
We wrap with a rapid-fire market pulse: surprising recall alerts owners should check now, and a “guess the price” classic car roundup that drops jaws—a clean ’69 GTO Judge, a survivor-grade Mopar with a shaker hood, a depreciated Porsche sedan, and more. The lesson repeats across every segment: match the build to your life, verify the details, and iterate with intention.
If you’re planning your first upgrade or refining a seasoned rig, this one’s packed with practical advice, real-world numbers, and a few hot takes to sharpen your plan. Enjoy the ride, then subscribe, leave a rating, and share this episode with a friend who’s about to order wheels they’ll regret.
