The 310S is a special certification for mechanics that lets them work on cars and light trucks. It shows they have the right training to fix these vehicles.
The 310T is a certification for mechanics that allows them to work on big trucks, especially those that run on diesel fuel. It means they have special training to fix these larger vehicles.
Turbo engines are designed to make cars more powerful without needing a bigger engine. They use a special device called a turbocharger to push more air into the engine, helping it run better and faster.
The Nissan 200 SX is a small, sporty car that was made a while ago and is known for being fun to drive. It's a good option for people who want a car that feels quick and nimble without spending a lot of money.
Honda is a car manufacturer that makes dependable cars. People often choose Honda because their vehicles tend to last a long time and require fewer repairs.
Premium fuel is a type of gasoline that burns more efficiently in some engines, helping them run better. It's usually more expensive than regular fuel.
A turbified engine is one that has a turbocharger. A turbocharger helps the engine produce more power by pushing more air into it, making the car faster and more efficient.
Formula One is a type of car racing that features very fast and powerful cars. These cars are built with special technology and need specific fuel to run properly, unlike regular cars.
Regular gas is the type of fuel that most cars use every day. It's not strong enough for high-performance cars like those used in racing, which need special fuel to work well.
TDI is a special kind of diesel engine made by Volkswagen that is designed to be very fuel-efficient. However, it needs a lot of care to keep it running well.
Diesel is a type of fuel used in some cars and trucks. Diesel engines are usually more efficient but can be harder to take care of than regular gasoline engines.
Severe service means that if you don't drive your car often or if you drive it under tough conditions, it will need more maintenance than a car that's used regularly and in normal conditions.
Octane is a rating that tells you how well a fuel can handle pressure without causing problems in the engine. Higher numbers mean better performance for powerful cars.
Turbocharging is a way to make an engine more powerful without making it bigger. It uses a special device to push more air into the engine, helping it run better and faster.
Regular fuel is the type of gasoline most cars use, but some high-performance cars need a special kind of fuel to run properly. Using the wrong fuel can damage the engine.
Pre-charging the oil filter means adding oil to it before putting it on the car. This way, when you start the engine, it gets oil right away instead of running dry for a moment, which can hurt the engine.
Motor oil is a liquid that keeps the engine running smoothly by reducing friction. It's important to use the type of oil that the car's manufacturer recommends.
An impeller is a part inside the turbocharger that spins around to help push air into the engine. This extra air helps the engine run better and faster.
Bearings are parts that help other parts move smoothly without rubbing against each other too much. In a turbo, they help the spinning part turn easily.
The Volkswagen Beetle is a small car that looks very different from most cars on the road. It's famous for its round shape and has been loved by many people for a long time because it's fun to drive and stands out.
A 'turbified vehicle' is a car that has a turbocharger added to its engine. A turbocharger helps the engine produce more power without needing a bigger engine, making the car faster and more efficient.
The Volkswagen Jetta is a small car that many people like because it's comfortable and good on gas. There was a special version that used diesel fuel, which was supposed to save even more money, but it got into trouble for not meeting clean air rules.
in the Stevensville area, some great eateries there.
That's where you'll find Safari Niagara as well.
Also, iHeartRadio, there's a link right there as well,
and our merchandise store,
which is a tool in itself.
Purchase some merch and help someone
who's struggling with addiction
get to Total Freedom Darien Center in New York in the US.
That's for Canadian and US residents.
It's a campus for men and women
and Total Freedom Sydney Manitoba.
That's with Chris, sorry, Rick and Robin, rather,
the facilitators there, and I'll tell you,
they know what addiction's all about,
and they have a wonderful story each to tell.
That's husband and wife team.
That is a men-only campus.
What do they do there?
They help those who are struggling with addictions,
whatever addiction it may be.
So proceeds from our merch goes to help fund,
help those get the help that they need to break free
from whatever that addiction is, whatever age group,
because addiction strikes many of all ages.
So let's do our part and help out with that.

What are we covering this morning?
Well, I thought you'd ask.
Turbos.
Yeah, turbo engines.
When we had the shop on the Hamilton Mountain,
every time I say turbo, I would kind of knee jerk
because the biter lived next door to our shop
and the dog's name was turbo.
And the owner would always say,
say, what is tail is wagging and it's up
and it's kind of tick talking back and forth.
He's okay, but if his tail is down and it's not wagging,
don't try and touch him, he'll bite you hard.
And it's true.
So when I say the word turbo,
that's the first thing that comes to mind.
He goes turbo, he was a biter.
He was nasty actually, he was very nasty,
extremely nasty, I would say.
I'd give him a nine out of 10 for nastiness.
Anyways, we're not talking about turbo today,
that turbo, we're actually talking about the turbo
that could potentially be on your vehicle's engine.
How many of you know whether your engine is turbified
or not?
Did you order a turbo style engine?
Well, if you didn't, you might wanna find out
because there's a lot of do's and don'ts
when you have a vehicle with an engine
that has a turbo on it.
I'm gonna give you some heads up because if you don't,
if you don't pay heed, my friends,
that turbo will not only suck oxygen in
and jam it into your engine to give you more horsepower,
it will suck your money,
clean out of every bank account,
every wallet, every secret stash you have,
and it'll take it all, all of it.
And I mean it, I absolutely mean it.
And I've seen it over and over and over again
with two types of vehicles.
People buy with no working knowledge about the animal
that they now own and it's in your driveway.
So I'm gonna share that with you as well.
So stick around, let's have a swiggy this morning.
If you haven't joined us before, welcome aboard.
We always like to have a little cup of coffee
or whatever your favorite morning beverages together.
We count it down three, two, one and have a swiggy.
Are you ready?
Okay, three, two, one.
I look forward to that every single day
because it's an early morning, long days, short nights.
Isn't there a song about that?
I don't know, there probably is.
I didn't write it, so it doesn't matter.
All right, what's up next?
I gave you a couple of tech tips already before,
but I'll remind you another fuel saving tip.
We're gonna do our 30 day fuel saving tip challenge
in February, so stick around for that.
You're gonna wanna sign up for it.
And it's gonna be an honesty program.
I'm gonna be your coach.
I will coach you along and encourage you
every step of the way because just on one vehicle alone,
you could save $100 a month in fuel.
$100 minimum a month.
What does that look like for your household?
How about two drivers, two cars?
How about $200 a month savings?
Would it be worth it for you to make some changes
to put that money back in your wallet?
I don't know, I throw that question out there.
Because you know what?
I like to take a nickel and hammer it into a dollar.
Absolutely, in this day and age or any day and age,
running a tight ship doesn't mean you have to be T.W.,
tight-walled, but it does mean to be smart.
So just keep in mind, you're all out there,
like the rest of us trading time for money,
home to work, home to work, home to work,
home to work, home to work, home to work,
and that's just one week.
Yeah, how much of that time that you're trading
from your family, from what you'd really like to do,
for money, and then burning it down, wasting it,
because you don't understand the fundamentals,
the basics of owning and operating an automobile.
When you do, things get really, really good.
You know why?
Well, I'm just putting on the road,
a brand new vehicle to me, 2008 Nissan Road.
Most of you would say, oh, that's an old Lunker, really?
That thing will make you money.
Why?
It's paid for.
All I gotta do is continue to maintain it,
like it's a fleet vehicle, and guess what?
Fleets don't change their vehicles out every five years.
They squeeze every drop of goodness out of every single one.
How do I know that?
I did fleet service for decades,
and they want those vehicles top drawer all the time,
because downtime costs money.
So just imagine, if you're losing 900 bucks a day
on downtime, because your car's down,
how much more would you appreciate your car?
I don't care how old it is.
Three years, five years, 15, 25, who cares?
If you're running that vehicle,
and you know the fundamentals, it's easy.
It's not hard, it's very, very easy.
And when you implement the plan,
you put money back in your wallet.
So if you wanna learn how to keep your vehicle
living longer, putting money back in your wallet,
and saving on automotive repair bills,
then you're on the right show.
But if none of that interests you,
now would be a good time for you to step out,
find something else to do.
Because I have 44 years of experience,
and I'm willing to unload my whole goodie bag for you.
Here on podcast, now I'm off radio after 31 years,
I'm sharing all the tips and tricks,
and knowledge and basic fundamentals
that will put money back in your wallet.
And you can own a vehicle 15 years old,
and know that that vehicle is maintained,
and it's a winner, an absolute winner.
And I will reiterate that all stinkin' day long.
And that 08 Nissan Rogue has a list of pattern failures,
I already have them memorized,
I already have implemented plans to eliminate the curve
and stay ahead of the curve of those pattern failures.
So all it means is,
every vehicle out there has pattern failures.
And I would say, Toyota Honda are pretty good,
they're pretty solid.
I haven't had, I've had Toyotas since I was 16,
and I've probably had every single one that they made,
and never had a bad one.
I can honestly say that,
never had a bad Yoda, not one.
And I've owned a lot of them.
In fact, I can't even count how many,
because I would buy them, fix them, sell them, buy it,
fix it, drive it for a while,
somebody wants to sell it, and carry on.
I never had a single one go bad.
Why?
Because I fixed it up, maintained it,
as though it was a fleet service vehicle.
That's right.
So there's a secret right there.
If you knew all those details
on how to maintain your vehicle like a fleet vehicle,
you'd have so much money back in your pocket,
you wouldn't believe it.
And I've spent some time over the last day
or two putting some numbers together,
you know, sitting and enjoying a quiet cup of coffee
at my desk, I always doodle.
And I thought, I wonder what the numbers really look like
when you buy a new vehicle.
So I got some real numbers.
And I'm scratching it out and even my eyes are growing.
I'm going, oh my gosh, how do people do this?
I'm gonna share that with you next week.
So stick around for that.
Coming up on Saturday morning drive with Motor Ralph,
8 a.m. Sharp, cold weather driving.
What actually matters?
What's important?
And we are in a bit of a deep freeze here
in the Great White North, the Niagara region.
And we got some single digit stuff coming in
and doesn't look like it's gonna be gone anytime soon.
So dress for it, adjust your driving for it,
white out conditions, all kinds of things going on.
Yeah, so we're gonna cover that.
We're gonna cover that on Saturday.
So stick around for that, put some nuggets for you.
But remember, everything we talk about
lives at our website, carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com.
It's the biggest drawer in our toolbox.
All our links, all our following stuff
is in the top right hand corner.
Stevensvilleontheweb.ca, there's so many.
iHeartRadio, we're on all platforms,
major, minor platforms, Apple, Amazon, and the like.
So wherever you pull your podcast from,
just type carconnectionworkshop into the search bar,
you'll find us.
We have almost 70 programs, episodes up.
And today is, it's Friday, that's right.
We've made it to the weekend.
It's Friday, this is a series one episode 68.
So by this time next week,
we'll have over 70 episodes
of the car connection workshop.
And every single one of them is different.
Exactly, because we do everything
exactly the same, only different on every program.
And that's what makes it exciting.
So remember that, carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com,
ccbusnet.com, you'll get all that information
is in every description for every podcast,
every one of our YouTube videos.
And remember our YouTube videos are teaching videos
for all age groups, teaching you the basics
and basic fundamentals, owning and operating a motor vehicle
and learning more about it, how it works.
So you'll learn five things in every single video.
What it is, what part it is, where it is,
how it works, how it breaks,
and what could you have known and done differently
after understanding what that component does
and how it works to not break it and save yourself money.
Just learning basic fundamentals.
I just shared in the podcast the other day, did you know?
Did you know that one PSI of tire pressure
lost in any one tire, you lose up to 2% fuel economy?
So how many PSIs would you like to have
all your tires not holding?
And this time of year, the air molecules shrink
and they pass through the sidewall of the tire.
That's a natural occurring thing
because the sidewalls of every tire
are the thinnest point on a tire
and air migrates to the sidewall.
That's how it gets out.
Your neighbor's not stealing it,
somebody's not going over to your car at nighttime
and tire goes down, in fact.
I got a little something, something going on myself here
with a one specific tire, all of a sudden seems to be flat
and it'll stay up for weeks on end.
So I think somebody's messing with me.
We got to catch them and we will, we'll catch them.
Yeah, we'll catch them and then treat them
like a bad, bad donkey.
That's what I'm thinking.
Make them drink some stone cold glazed over decaf coffee.
Yeah, that would do it.
That should, that should sharpen them up.
I think it's one molecule away from being waste diesel oil,
but that's just me saying, that's just me.
Hey, if you're a decaf dude or a gal, that's great.
That's your flavor.
So turbo engines, power now, problems later.
And I'm talking huge.
If you don't understand how a turbo works
and you're not willing to understand how a turbo works
and you have a turbified car,
you got a world of hurt coming your way, baby.
I'm telling you something.
Yeah, I'm going to tell you something
that it is going to educate you
in a very short period of time when it starts to go south.
It's a car no go after, you can't drive it.
You can't eliminate the turbo.
So if you say, well, if the turbo goes,
oh, it's only five grand.
What?
It's five grand.
Well, can't you just bypass it?
Nope.
Are you sure?
Yep.
It's a car no go at that point.
It's called lack of maintenance, lack of power,
lack of money, get a bus pass.
Simple as that.
So we're going to have a very serious conversation
because you, it's a got to, it's a got to thing.
Yeah, I think there's a song about that.
In a got to one ever.
I don't know, in a got to have a donut.
I believe in that.
Absolutely.
Everything in moderation.
You don't want to blimp out.
So turbo engines, power now, problems later.
I talked about, I've talked about premium fuel,
the difference between regular premium and ethanol.
And what else?
Oh, I've talked on so much in the last little while.
I mean, we've got almost 70 programs put together.
When I was on radio, we only did 52 programs a year.
We've surpassed that in like 10 weeks.
So got your crayons ready?
Cause you're going to want to take this Intel down.
If you have, if you have a turbified engine
and you have not read the owner's manual,
you're already behind the eight ball.
Seriously, cause you're driving something
that's super high tech, super high performance.
And you know what?
It requires everything to the nut.
Like you're working on a formula one engine.
Yeah, you don't put regular gas in a F one race car.
You just don't, you'll kill it.
It won't even do 10 rounds.
It's over.
Bag of hammers.
So two vehicles that I have seen people buy
because they think it's just going to be maintenance free
after they get it.
Oh, it's going to be great.
I'm going to have lots, lots of horsepower.
I'm going to save money because it's a diesel
and you get yourself backed into a corner
and go, oh my gosh, I didn't know.
Yeah, I didn't know it was going to be like this.
Well, let's unpack it.
We're going to pull over, put on the handbrake,
drill down, tap in, unload.
Let's get into it.
Cause here's where the crying starts.
Number one, I'll just share a wee story with you.
When I was working for Volkswagen,
a lot of people were jumping into TDIs
cause they thought they got like a hundred miles
to gallon, no, they didn't.
But they required a ton of service.
It's a diesel.
It's high tech.
It's turbified and you know what?
Treat it like a bad donkey.
Wipe out your bank account and no time flat
and you got to buy another car
cause you bagged the engine, done.
Blew it up.
Buying a diesel and toodling it around the city
earned bad move.
Don't listen to the neighbor.
They just put you in a big pothole.
Nope.
That thing needs to boot up and down the highway
like the 401 is its own personal road.
That's what they're designed to do.
You do not buy a diesel truck, diesel anything
unless you're going to be hauling that baby.
Yeah, that's the one you can haul down the road
night and day, but ask any truck driver
if they can abuse their rig without any maintenance.
Just ask them.
If I am a cup of coffee and ask them questions,
your eyeballs are going to be spinning
in the back of your head like chicklets
because they're not maintenance free.
They need maintenance times 10
because that thing's coming after every dime you own
if you don't.
So you might want to think about that.
Oh, it'd be cool to have a diesel truck.
If you're going to buy a diesel truck
and just toodle around the city, forget it.
You're going to kill it.
You're choking it.
That engine will die a very small,
quiet, miserable death.
They're not designed for that.
So if you're thinking you're going to buy it
and once or twice a year boot it up to the cottage
and back, buy something else
because you're going to kill it.
Simple as that.
That's not good enough.
You just, you know what?
It's not worth investing in the diesel for that.
So we'll do a whole, I'll do a whole show on diesel
and it'll blow your mind because if you're terrible
with maintenance, it ain't for you sister or brother.
It is not your deal.
You step in that arena
and it is so going to whoop your backside real bad.
No, that's not for you.
If you're a stickler on maintenance
and you're going to be working that thing
like it wants to run, they want to run.
Diesel engines want to run.
Not sitting idle, not toodle around.
They want to run all the time.
Hard, that's what they're designed for.
Hauling, payload, not just once or twice a year.
It's not worth it.
Your maintenance level is going to be
through the stinking roof
because the less you drive something,
the more the maintenance.
Did you know that?
Vehicles that are driven less fall into a category
called severe service.
How many of you know that?
What does that mean?
Means it needs more service,
more often all the time.
And why am I telling you that?
Because a turbified vehicle is exactly the same,
except it's gas powered.
It requires the utmost of attention
from what fuel goes in it,
what engine oil goes in that motor,
what you do when you come off the road
into a parking lot or off the highway.
There are things you had better learn
because when that turbo goes south on you,
you are going to know what it's like
to be treated like a bad, bad donkey.
Yeah, it's going to eat your wallet alive.
So let's get into it.
I'm the guy that will tell you the truth,
the solid truth all the time, night and day,
tell you the things that you really, really,
really, really need to know about your car,
because I'd like to see you keep your vehicles long term
like I do, maintain them to the nines,
never having to get into paying interest and principle,
and watching every dime because it's going into the car
on payments, and then I still got to maintain it,
or I get on the roundabout where I'm swapping it out every,
by the time I pay it off, I've lost 40%,
40% of its value or more,
and I've shortened its lifespan
because of lack of maintenance by 40%.
We were just talking about that a day or two ago
on podcast here.
I will give you the whole truth
about maintaining an automobile
and how your habits, your thoughts, your mindset,
your ideas that haven't worked in the past
are killing your wallet, trading time for money.
So let's jump right in with both feet.
A termified engine provides you a lot more horsepower
because it's sucking air in, pressurizing it,
jamming it into the engine, and what they're doing is,
it's amazing how much horsepower
they're getting out of a four-cylinder engine.
That's great, that's wonderful, that's marvelous,
simply marvelous, but when you don't know
what that turbo really means when it comes to maintenance,
you got a whooping coming.
Number one, I'm going to start right at the back of the car.
You have a vehicle that's got a turbo,
it ain't taking your regular gas, sweetheart or mister,
no, no, no, no, it wants the real beverage.
Yeah, highest octane you can feed that sucker,
because if you don't, you're going to find out
just how many teeth that turbo has,
and it's going to bite you with all of them.
It is meant for premium gas, 91 plus.
If you can get 97 octane, you jam the 97 octane in there,
but you ain't buying a turbo fight engine
and treating it like a cheap domestic car,
a throwaway, because that's what they are,
they're a throwaway.
If you don't maintain a cheap domestic vehicle
to the nines, five years, it's a throwaway
like a big lighter, into the scrap heap.
I'm just being honest with you,
been in this trade long enough
to see the pattern failures,
that's a huge pattern failure,
that's the never and ever plan.
You buy it, they give you three years, 60, if you're lucky,
and by the time you finish paying it off,
there's nothing left of it and they give you nothing,
a dollar 99 and jelly of the month club coupon.
Right, Clark?
Yeah, that's what you're going to get, nothing.
Make all those payments and nothing left,
unless you maintain it like crazy.
Because it's designed obsolescence,
let's be truthful about it.
Unless you're great with your maintenance,
five years, it's a throwaway.
And that's what they want,
they don't want you to service it,
they don't want you to put money into it,
they want that thing to get decrepit
by the time you make the last payment,
it's limping itself to the crusher.
That's it.
So now you jump into something high tech's got a turbo,
got more horsepower, boy, does this thing ever rip along?
Yeah, premium fuel, baby, all the way,
not just one tank once in a while.
Read the manual, look inside the lid, the fill tank lid,
it's going to tell you what octane it has to have.
Yeah, you don't buy like a turbified Audi or Volkswagen
and treat it like a domestic car.
That's going to be a bad experience for you,
because it's not, it's a high tech European engineer
designed vehicle with high tech components.
That's what it is.
You're buying high end,
you better be able to maintain it high end.
You got a vehicle with a turbo,
that's a high end vehicle, high end engine.
It requires more of you, not less, more.
You put the regular fuel in there,
you're going to burn that turbo out.
You're going to carbon that thing up so bad,
it's going to gum up so bad it stops working.
And no, you can't just spray some goo in the tank
or a bottle of snake oil at the store
with the little red triangle on it,
and it's all going to be well tomorrow morning.
Not going to happen, unrealistic.
I know I'm giving it to you straight up
because you got to know,
you got to know what you don't know.
And with a turbo, it's going to require
that you use top end motor oils and oil filters.
No cheapy drive through 20 minute oil change
for that vehicle whatsoever.
Skippy probably doesn't know that you have to
pre-charge the oil filter with oil.
What does that mean?
You don't spin that oil filter on Skippy empty.
Because when the car starts up,
the turbo is spinning at thousands and thousands of RPM
and it requires motor oil to cool the bearings.
And you might say, well, that's only a minute.
Yeah, for a turbo, that's eternity without oil.
Eternity without oil.
That will take it out.
It will take the bearings right out of the impeller shaft
on that turbo and it's cha-ching, it's done.
There's no bypass surgery.
You need a turbo to go to work tomorrow.
That's simple.
Oil changes, top grade oil, what it calls for.
Not what you think, what it calls for
and nothing less, nothing more.
No deviation one way or the other to try and save bucks.
Again, you do not buy a high tech vehicle
with a turbo on it for performance
and treat it like it's a throwaway five year car.
Oh, you'll throw it away long before five years
because that turbo won't take it.
It will not take it.
Top grade motor oil, only what it calls for by the engineers.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Top drawer oil filters.
We're not talking the $6 beauty that looks nice.
Oh, it's so pretty.
Yeah, it's a piece of garbage.
You need top end filters.
That means you're gonna probably spend $20 to $30
for a proper oil filter for it.
Not $12.99, not off the jungle website.
You gotta treat that thing like it wants to be treated
not the way you wanna treat it.
All right, let's keep going.
How many of you know that when you have a vehicle
with a turbo engine and you pull in somewhere,
you can't just shut it off?
Did you know that?
You gotta idle it down, talk to a trucker.
The turbo has to spool down.
It's turning at thousands and thousands of RPM,
a little tiny, what looks like an impeller on a house fan
inside, but it's designed to move air
strategically into the engine under RPM.
So when you pull in somewhere,
you got a turbo fight engine,
you don't just turn that key off.
You gotta let that, you gotta give that engine time
to rotate down.
It's called spooling down of the turbo.
We gotta let the oil settle
and let the turbo spool down to an idle,
then you can shut it off.
But if you decide, I don't have time for that,
that's okay, that's okay,
because that's gonna cost you a turbo.
Because when you pull in,
that turbo is still what we call spooled up.
It's spinning and it's working.
As soon as you shut that engine off,
there's no oil pressure.
The bearings in the turbo shaft now are running
still at thousands of RPM with no oil.
No oil pressure, no oil, no lubricant,
the bearings come apart.
But here's the sad part.
When the turbo shaft lets go,
the bearings let go or the fins in the spool let go,
guess where all those pieces parts go?
Directly into your engine.
Guess what happens to the engine?
Kiss a goodbye, it's over.
Shrapnel, that's what we call it.
Turbo exploded, engine's full of shrapnel, it's game over.
If I'm scaring you, I should,
because I'm giving you the reality.
Kids, young 20-somethings,
most of them understand turbos
because they love their turbo.
They get it, because that gives them a lot of horsepower.
I have two vehicles that are car show event vehicles
that are turbified, one's a 2000,
a Millennium Silver Sob 93, that's turbified.
We have a new Beetle convertible that I put together as well
and rescued it and that is a 1.8T, that's turbified.
Yeah, oil change doesn't cost you 20 bucks,
doesn't cost you 100 bucks,
cost you close to 200 bucks with the filter
and just the oil, yeah.
It's gotta be European grade built for that car,
built for that turbo and a matching filter
right from the manufacturer.
I don't put any other filters on the Sob
unless it has Sob right on it.
I don't put any other oil filters on the 1.8T Beetle
unless it says Volkswagen right on there, VW.
That's what it was born with, that's what it has to have.
Oil from the manufacturer and changing the oil
on time every time, otherwise the turbo will gum up
and it's over, you're gonna need a turbo.
So I hope you're getting the picture here.
I talked a little bit about the diesels,
do not touch a diesel just because your neighbor says so
or someone says, oh yeah, they're great, application.
You gotta look at the application.
Same with the turbified engine.
You do not buy a vehicle that has a turbo
because you wanna get up and go, giddy up and go,
making her happener, if you're loud enough
and you're cozy at vehicle maintenance.
If you suck at vehicle maintenance totally,
that is not the car for you.
You need a five year throw in the garbage car,
that's what you need.
Go as far as you can, limp it into the crusher,
get a couple hundred bucks for it and go and get in line
and sign up for another one.
That's how that works.
There's a lot of people on that program,
but this radio program in 31 years on radio,
it was not for you.
This program's for, I'm sharing from my heart,
the truth that you need to hear to help you, not hurt you.
I'm here to help you, not hurt you.
But I'll tell you what, that turbified vehicle,
that sucker's gonna hurt you.
And it's gonna be a really big, bad lesson
and it doesn't take long before it happens either.
It's not an extended thing before it happens,
it will happen quickly.
So you're not using, you decide not to use premium fuel,
high octane fuel, decide not to do your oil changes on time,
press it out, push it out as far as you can,
because you're trying to save money.
And you're not maintaining it,
you're not even understanding how the turbo works,
you're not spooling it down, all those things together
are gonna cost you your very first turbo.
Continue to run that same cycle
over and over and over again,
it's gonna cost you another turbo.
But as I just mentioned, the tip of the iceberg is,
what we know about icebergs are,
there's more under the water than what you see on top.
It describes a turbo perfectly.
There's more inside going on inside that turbo
than what you see on the outside.
That you probably don't understand.
I just explained it as easily as I can,
because I don't wanna see any getting hurt.
Lots of people bought a TDI, diesel-powered Jetta,
and it killed the thing.
Carboned it right up to the point
where the engine wouldn't even run anymore, it shut right up.
And now you got a piece of junk, yeah, now what?
What do you do now?
It's not worth anything.
Same with a vehicle with a burned-out turbo.
Anybody who's shopping for a pre-owned vehicle
that has a turbo line knows,
they better have somebody check the state of that turbo
before you say yes and sign it and take it home.
Because you don't know what the other person's
maintenance level was like.
That turbo could be just on the edge, you get it,
and it lets go.
And as I said, if the whole turbo cartridge
blows apart, all that metal goes right into your engine.
And it is over and she's singing, if you know what I mean.
She is singing.
So turbo engines are great, they give you lots of power,
it's amazing how much power they get
out of a little four-banger or a four-liter.
It's amazing, like even that 1.8 turbo in our 2003
new Beetle convertible, that thing's putting out
185 horsepower.
That's crazy for a little thing like that.
185 horsepower.
And things no bigger than a bread box, but it's high tech.
You got double camshafts in there, twin camshafts,
timing belts, tensioners, the whole nine yards.
It is a busy, high tech motor.
Do you wanna abuse it?
Give it a try.
It's gonna let you know it doesn't like
not being taken care of.
And I don't say all this to give you fear or nightmares
or anything like that.
I'm telling you straightforward, do not do it.
Don't buy it if you're not willing to go along
with the maintenance package, because it won't be long.
If you make it a year, I'd be surprised.
I really would.
Chucking in regular fuel, cheapy, quicky oil changes,
not spooling down the turbo when you pull in anywhere
because time is short.
I don't have time for that.
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that,
I don't have time for that.
I don't have time for that.
Well, then you need a five-year throwaway.
That's what you need.
Buy it, treat it like a bad donkey,
and then drive it right into the scrap yard,
get your two or 300 bucks.
Go get in line, sign up for another one.
Home to work, home to work, home to work,
and make the payments in the interest.
So I'm gonna leave it there because that's the basics.
That's the basics.
When you buy something that's super high tech,
you better know that the maintenance comes along with it
because if you don't buy into the maintenance
on the last one you had,
buying something with a turbo or a diesel in it
is gonna be one long, rough road.
And it's going to be an educator, big time.
You're gonna get educated in a hurry.
And a diesel, we always say when we're in the trucking
business fixing trucks,
a diesel's your best friend when you look after it,
and it's your worst nightmare when you don't.
It's that simple.
We'll see you in the next one.

About this episode
Turbo engines offer impressive power, but they come with significant maintenance responsibilities that many owners overlook. Niall Motormouth Jenkins shares crucial insights into the do's and don'ts of owning a turbocharged vehicle, emphasizing the importance of using premium fuel, proper oil changes, and the necessity of allowing the turbo to spool down before shutting off the engine. He warns that neglecting these aspects can lead to costly repairs and engine failures. With over 44 years of experience, Niall provides practical advice to help listeners maintain their vehicles effectively and avoid common pitfalls.
Turbo engines deliver incredible power from smaller engines- but they are not forgiving.
In this episode, we break down why turbocharged vehicles demand maintenance, maintenance, and more maintenance - and what happens when owners treat them like disposable, five year throwaways.
You'll learn:
1) Why turbo engines require premium fuel and high-end oil
2) What "spooling down" a turbo actually means
3) How heat and tight tolerances shorten turbo life
4) Why skipping maintenance leads straight to turbo cartridge failure
5) And how one mistake can open a financial cavern that sucks every dollar out of your pocket
Turbo vehicles can be fantastic - if you respect them.
Ignore what the engineers designed them for, and you'll quickly meet the real cost of parts and labour.
This episode is for anyone considering - or already owning-a turbocharged vehicle who wants to avoid expensive regret.
Before you buy - or keep - a turbo vehicle, listen to this episode carefully. If this helped you, share it with someone shopping for "more power".
