An oil change is when you replace the old oil in your car's engine with new oil. It's important for keeping the engine running smoothly and preventing damage.
Break-in oil is the oil used in a brand new engine to help it settle in. It has special ingredients to protect the engine while it's still getting used to running.
The Land Rover Discovery is a fancy SUV that can drive on tough roads and still be comfortable inside. It’s great for families because it has a lot of space and is designed to handle different kinds of driving conditions.
Dyno testing is when engineers check how powerful an engine is using special machines. They can't test every engine because it takes a lot of time and effort.
The break-in period is the time after you buy a new car when you need to be careful with how you drive it. This helps the engine parts settle in properly and work well together.

Rear seat belts are the straps that keep people safe in the back seats of the car. Sometimes they can get old and not work well, which is why they might need to be replaced.
An oil filter is a part of the engine that cleans the oil by removing dirt and tiny particles. This helps keep the engine running smoothly and prevents damage.
Carbon buildup is when black, sticky stuff collects inside the engine. It happens when the fuel doesn't burn completely or when the oil breaks down, and it can make the engine work less well.
Synthetic oil is a special kind of engine oil that is made from man-made chemicals. It works better than regular oil but can still get dirty and pick up particles from the engine.
Thermal breakdown is when oil gets too hot and stops working well. This can make it less effective at protecting the engine and can cause damage over time.
Conventional oil is regular oil made from natural sources. It's the most common type used in cars, but it doesn't perform as well as synthetic oil in extreme conditions.

mouth Jenkins and we're going to shift this thing this morning into drive right here in
the shop the topic this morning I'm backing up the bus no just a little bit just a little
tiny bit a tad you say on oil changes I did talk about it in another podcast and I kind
of blew through it a little bit but I wanted to back up the bus and then give you a little
more depth on oil change services and important and the importance of break in oils when you
buy a vehicle brand new what you really need to know the science behind the break in oil
and what that should mean to you so this this morning's topic what really happens when you
skip oil changes from a mechanics view and yes I am licensed since 1988 I have my light
truck and passenger vehicle certification as well as highway trucks and coaches and
bezels and my licenses yes yes they're current that's right well for all you armchair warriors
yeah I've been at this a while and let me tell you I love it and I hate it sometimes you ever
have that with your own profession you love it's a love hate it's almost like well it almost sounds
like taking care of the car it's a love hate relationship but if you're passionate about
automobiles like I am and you know sometimes you get into a job that is just it is just
not going well you know the vehicle is just being a really bad donkey and you got to walk away from
it and it's that's why it's so important to take notes write down what you've tested where you've
tested it what the results are verify that with the stats actual readings factory readings
and think about it just for a little bit let your mind work on it you know what happens when you
get back into it you look at read or reread your notes you go you know what I don't need to go back
to here and just run another test and bam it comes up right in front of you you know where the area
of problems are and then you can pinpoint test and drive that thing home all right let's jump into uh

to grasp that new life and make a change early in 2026 that would be we look forward to hearing
some testimonials early in the first quarter of 2026 people making some changes and you know
nothing changes if nothing changes right that's exactly the same theory behind owning and operating
an automobile if you treat the one you presently have like a really bad donkey what says when you
buy the next one that you won't continue the same cycle you will i've seen it for 40 some odd years
i have seen some gorgeous vehicles be treated just like it was a piece of junk and i can't believe
you know you spend 40 50 60 thousand dollars on a vehicle and treat it that way this was my question
and my professor asked me that said bono if i had 61 thousand dollar bills sitting on the
kitchen table would you leave the room i go heck no i'd trip you on the way to the driveway if i
thought i lost two bucks absolutely and that's that's the way we should look at that is look at
the price of your vehicle if you had that money in cash and you put it on the kitchen table would
you leave the room i'm going to save for most of you probably not probably not well let's have
a swiggy together this morning i'm chomping at the bit here so whatever your favorite morning
beverages we just lift the glass together a mug a cup whatever it is that you have a flask there's
a term for you a flask a thermos oh i love my thermos i call my thermos uma thermos yeah when i
go on the road i take my own mini mix of coffee yeah that's what i like so i take it with me so on
three two one let's just have a morning swiggy together what do you say three two one
yeah that was worth it absolutely moment of silence
hmm that is a good blend this morning well let's jump right in oil changes everybody
got to do them but are you doing them right that's what we're going to talk about this morning
i'm packing a whole lot more you buy a brand new vehicle they tell you all your first oil changes
so many kilometers wrong wrong and wrong times wrong plus wrong and we're going to talk about
that as well because there is a proper way to do it to break that engine in in a way that is just
rumor and opinion there's no science behind it i'm going to tell you science behind it and then
i'm going to give you a link that you can go and visit and you can see statistic after statistic
after statistic scientific testing that proves that extending your first oil changes during the oil
during the engine break in period there is a right way to do that and there is a wrong way
and i'm going to explain as simple as i possibly can but then i'll lead you to one of the youtube
channels that i've been watching for quite some time because they do proper testing there
and it's all about motor oil all about motor oil and you got the right guy doing the job to
give you the facts not lip service not someone's thoughts and ideas but the truth about how to
break that brand new vehicle in break that engine in properly and do it safely and correctly
folks your vehicle is not a vampire i know you might find that a bit weird this morning
it doesn't like old dirty oil even if it's synthetic it smells like robot tears
read your owner's manual or ask your mechanic ignoring oil changes could lead to what we in the
biz call catastrophic wallet leakage yeah it will eat up a stack of cash before your very eyes
let's talk first brand new vehicles just momentarily because that's the shorter
discussion at this point not here's here's where the rumor comes in oh all the engines
are dinod at the factory no they're not they're not they may pluck one out of a thousand one
one out of five thousand but they're not dyno testing every single motor no they don't
they don't have time for that it's very time consuming so that's not true so if the sales
guys lips are telling you oh you don't have to worry about it you know the engines are dinod at
the factory wrong give them a year's supply of riceroni and some spam yeah exactly not true
what you need to know is this when an engine is built no matter how clean the shop the facility
may be there's still particle metal particles inside that motor somewhere and as the engine
runs for the first few times there's going to be more particles and as you run it even longer
during the breaking period there's going to be where in and where in is particles metal particles
and that's what we have to be concerned about so the idea that every single motor is dinod before
it goes in it it's broken in before it goes in the vehicle that is a load of bologna yeah the
live from the pit of hell and smells like smoke so how do we treat that motor right from the
factory you're going to need to do two to three back to back oil changes to make sure you're
getting all those particles out of the engine as the engine is wearing it because that's what it
does it's like a new parachute you don't always take you know I always kept my old work boots
when I bought new ones because dang you know by the end of the day my dogs are barking my bunions
are screaming and you know my toes are just wanting to get the heck out of dodge if you
know what I'm saying so I'd always you know wear my new ones for a half day if I could make it that
bar and then put my old ones back on until they're broken in it's as funny as that sounds
that's how we have to treat that brand new engine so you buy a brand new vehicle just like my
friend down the street jen about a 2025 Jeep to replace her your Jeep we don't talk about
anymore it brings tears to our eyes uh your Jeep got written off two minutes from home
someone deciding not to pay attention to the octagonal red sign and blaze to rake the side
so she has a brand spanking new vehicle so it's christmas time she's not been feeling well
so I will talk to her about the break in period once uh once we have a chance to connect
and it's important you're going to need to do two to three and I would definitely recommend three
oil changes back to back and they'll say well well you know that's the break in oil in there well
you can do the oil changes with break in oil if you wish exactly but the reason behind the two
to three oil changes short shift oil changes that's so we're not extending the oil change because
it's got break in oil in again that's a load of you know what horse pucky exactly we need to as that
motor is continuing to run through and where in there's particles particles that do not get captured
by the oil filter they're really really teeny weeny and they can get through and they do get
through the paper inside the oil filter and then they're floating around inside the motor
and that's what we want to prevent during that break in period so here's where i'm going to give
you a link because uh lake just did a segment and and I watched the whole thing because he had me
intrigued right from the very beginning he was talking about his own vehicle that he just bought
and uh that's the motor oil geek on youtube you need to check in with lake his father is uh
lake speed in in um nascar he's i think he's retired now but lake jr is a motor oil geek and
that's the name of his channel motor oil geek and he was just talking about in detail uh he just
bought a brand new um Toyota pickup truck and he's working his engine through a break in period
properly and he broke it down and the way he explained it was really really good and I just
gave you the short version but he also shows you the science behind why that is that you're going
to need to do two to three short oil changes to get that motor properly worn in without causing
any engine damage and here's what you have to think you got to think really hard about this
whose motor is that in that vehicle well here's where the bad attitude comes in if you're thinking
well you know I don't care what happens to it you know it's got factory warranty yeah well they
they're the ones that determine whether you're going to get the warranty or not but at the
end of the day are you going to turn the vehicle back in once the factory warranty is off not most
of you from what I see so here's what you have to say the day that you get the keys begins your
vehicle ownership you own it and if you're planning on keeping it long term you're going
to own it for a long time so how you get started and how you break that engine in properly from
brand new is of utmost importance so check out lake speeds youtube channel the oil geek
okay yeah and let them know I sent you because he does a great job with testing they have
dinos and everything there it's a a racing facility where they they test and and repair
and rebuild race engines but most of all they're testing oil and how it hydraulics and that's
the oil is in there and the oil acts like hydraulic oil it needs to be pressurized and it needs to
remain pressurized in order for everything to be lubricated it's not just in there just sloshing
around it's under pressure it's in a hydraulic pressure to get that engine lubricated so now I
want to jump into the everyday average joe has a vehicle like my own I'm heading for 400,000
kilometers on our 07 Toyota FJ cruiser I'm 312 ish on our 99 Honda Civic DX two-door hatchback
yep and it looks like new it really really does in fact if you go to our youtube channel
we gave the 99 Honda Civic an updo this past summer because we were invited to bring it out to
a tuner car show and the kids were just all over it they're like you want to sell that mister
they're calling me sir and I'm going oh you you don't have to call me sir yeah it's okay if you
want to but just you know if we didn't know when we were born we'd never know how old we are
anyways we gave it a serious updo and got it into a tuner car show first time ever
and she certainly held her own that's for sure two-door hatchback red we call her the rocket
five-speed air conditioning everything works vehicles like brand spanking new inside it needs
a little cosmetic surgery that we'll take care of in 2026 and she'll be right as rain absolutely
but we have some youtube videos up showing you how we did the I changed the headliner in it
that's quite a project I took the whole car apart inside and put a headliner into it because the
fabric was starting to rot above the sun visors we replaced the sun visors and I also replaced
the rear seat belts because they were getting lazy and you know do you have you had one of those
vehicles where you take the seat belt off and it's just dangling there it doesn't retract
yeah that it's annoying so I managed to find a vehicle identical exactly right down to the nut
red with gray interior same car and I salvaged some parts I call it foraging I foraged a lot of
that little car in a recycle yard in the US and that's what helped us to bring and put some upgrades
into the 99 Honda Civic so how do you get that mileage oil changes that's right how do you get
to those high miles and not have to not be concerned or nervous that something's going to happen
oil changes quality oil changes and not oil change extensions because what you have to
understand is sludge particles that get through the oil filter that are cycling through your motor
causing wear and tear that's what you have to understand and once you get that concept
that you have particles floating through the engine get get through the oil filter you have carbon
build up in the oil and that's what creates a lot a lot of sludges and yeah you armchair warriors
with your synthetic it's exactly the same the synthetic oil doesn't tell you through some kind
of sensor or met or oil telepathy that there's particles floating around in the oil it's still
thermally breaks down prove me wrong I'll challenge you all day every day take your
lunch money and your milk money on that then synthetic oil still breaks down still carries
particles still gets carbonated it still gets dirty that's the fact and spoken directly into my ear
from a large motor oil manufacturer many years ago if I said the manufacturer you would know it
right away said to me dial don't waste your customer's money with synthetic oils because
they'll never with the type of driving they're doing they'll never get all the fullness out of
that synthetic oil not my message I'm just the messenger that came right from an oil engineer at
a top name brand said even semi synthetic quality conventional oil and a top notch oil filter is
what you need to do I know a lot of engines now are calling synthetic this synthetic that and you
know why yeah synthetic oils dissipate heat a little bit more a little bit better but so does
conventional oil if you're using a quality product exactly it's ash ash that's created by the engine
oil that sludges up the motor even if it's synthetic fellas just saying there's no sensors in the
molecules of the oil that tell you that you know all the particles are not floating around in your
motor the oil's still dark black go ahead dip the stick you'll see why is that so that's my question
to you all the synthetic lovers why is that why does the synthetic oil get black thermal breakdown
of the oil carbon buildup in the oil excessive debris buildup in the oil and filter carbon
particles and metal transfers back into the oil continuously so extending your oil changes
you're actually your engines committing slow suicide it really is I changed my motor oil and
you'll hear this from the motor oil geek as well on youtube 5000 kilometers three months or 5000
kilometers whichever occurs first how is it that I get to 400 000 I will put 600 000 kilometers on
that 07 fj on the original motor and it doesn't use a drop between oil change services interesting
huh I did put synthetic oil one time and I had a 99 98 honda crv and somebody talked me into doing
it and it was not a good ride that motor sounded like it was the john deere tractor I had to dump it
three days later I dumped the the synthetic oil out and put the regular conventional oil back in
recommended by the manufacturer motor was very very happy if you were to capture the oil as it
drains and pass it through a coffee filter you would see what I'm telling you about particles
constantly transferring inside the engine the filter does the best it possibly can
but there's still harmful debris that does not get captured by the oil filter
so extending oil changes is not a good idea we don't want thermal we don't want oil in there
that's thermally broken down that's where it smells you can smell there's gas in it it's gassy
it's also got particles in it and you can prove that simply like as the oil's draining catch some
in a coffee filter and let it drain off and watch what you find in the bottom of that coffee filter
you'll be pleasantly surprised the amount of particles whether it's conventional oil or full
synthetic or even so-called long life oil the results are the same particles in the oil
thermal breakdown occurs can't get away from it it's the way the combustion engine is designed
so your oil change intervals you know the guide from the manufacturer is just this and
this comes right from a good resource good friend at manufacturer level said to me niley said
the information in the maintenance book that comes with the vehicle are only suggestions
there you go that's the back door for the manufacturer right there they're only suggestions
then it's left to who it's left to us to get the right answer so you want to change your engine
oil with a top quality conventional motor oil or synthetic oil that's what the manufacturer calls
for and a top notch filter none of these three dollar four dollar filters uh i use wix filters and
no they don't support the channel i've been using wix for a long time i i thoroughly believe in their
products and that's all i use for filtration wix filters whether it's air cabin or oil transmission
that's what i want because i've come to know the product very very well and i want to be able to
keep my vehicle until i'm done till i say i'm done and then i don't want a piece of junk
left in my driveway i want something that still has value that i can sell to somebody else and
they can be the next caregiver that's how it works if you work it and work the plan and plan the work
and do what i'm suggesting to you you as well will have vehicles in your driveway heading for
400 000 kilometers don't use a drop oil run like the day they were born and you don't have
problems with your engine and the transmission is the same way we're going to talk about that in
in another podcast but i hope you got something out of this do not two things do not skip your
oil changes and do not extend the oil changes and remember what i just told you the manufacturers
maintenance manual that's in your glove box for the maintenance is our only suggestions
they're not cast in stone that's what i exactly what i was told they're not the gospel they're
not cast in stone now they're just suggestions so what does that mean to you the consumer
i would say learn to be a prosumer not a consumer because no one's gonna hold your hand and that's
the facts that goes for everything your health your home your family your finances car you've
got to get to the people that you can build that relationship with that will keep you on track
that you know will help to keep you accountable to reach your goal if your goal is to put half a
million kilometers on your vehicle you've got to have a plan to get there it just won't happen because
it does so again do not exchange do not stretch out your oil changes don't do it change your oil
and filter sooner than later you want to follow in my footsteps what i've been trained from as
apprentice is i change my engine oil and filter every 5000 kilometers i've been doing that since
i was 16 years old and i've never bought a brand new vehicle i've always bought pre-oil and that's
how i start right from the very beginning is get all the maintenance is on track and then keep it up
from there on in do not extend those oil oil changes and get your your oil and your filter
replaced every 5000 k and guess what you too we'll see at the 600 000 kilometer club you'll make it as
well so till next time thanks for having me aboard we've got if there's anything that you would like
me to cover specific send me an email you can do that through a website at carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com
there is a website form there the email comes directly to me you can also email me through
stevenswellontheweb.ca our business profile is there click on the business tab there's an email
thingy there's an email thingy on that one as well or you can drop a comment on any one of our
youtube videos because i read every single comment i love to hear what's in your heart
and i i'm not one to uh to listen to any kind of drama so those ones i just flush
if there's a negative comment just trust me armchair warriors you will never put a dent
my armor ever not possible because i know where i put you in my head and i keep you there because
destructive criticism is the death gargle of a loser trained by my professor in psychology

About this episode
Skipping oil changes can lead to serious engine damage, as discussed by a seasoned mechanic with over 30 years of experience. The episode dives deep into the importance of regular oil changes, especially during the break-in period of a new vehicle. It debunks common myths about factory testing and emphasizes the need for multiple oil changes to remove metal particles that accumulate during initial engine wear. Listeners will gain insights on maintaining their vehicles for longevity and the science behind oil change intervals.
Many drivers stretch their oil changes to save time or money, but the long - term damage often shows up where you can't see it.
In this episode, a mechanic explains what really happens inside an engine when oil changes are skipped - including sludge buildup, oil starvation, timing component wear, and premature engine failure.
We also talk about why modern engines are less forgiving, how oil change intervals affect longevity, and what mechanics actually see when engines come apart.
This is honest, real - world automotive advice to help you avoid costly and extend the life of your vehicle.
