The Jeep Wrangler is an SUV built for off-road driving, like dirt roads and trails. People often keep them for a long time and fix them up, which is why older Wranglers come up in ownership stories.
Here, “Wrangler” means the Jeep Wrangler, an SUV made for off-road trails. When people talk about crossing the Rubicon, they’re usually talking about driving on rough terrain where the Wrangler’s 4-wheel-drive system helps.
Your fuel system is how the car gets gas from the tank to the engine and keeps it at the right amount. If it’s neglected, the car can run poorly or not start as well.
This belt helps run important stuff on your engine, like the battery charger (alternator). If it gets worn out and breaks, the car can lose power to several systems quickly.
A serpentine belt is one belt that powers several engine accessories by wrapping around different pulleys. If that one belt fails, more than one system can stop working.
Term
all the lights
This is about making sure every outside light on your car works—like headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. If one is out, it’s both a safety problem and can get you pulled over.
A “walk around” just means you take a minute before driving to look at the car from the outside. You check things like lights and tires so you don’t miss a problem.
Cooling system hoses are the tubes that carry coolant to keep the engine from overheating. If they get old or crack from the inside, coolant can leak out and the engine can overheat—sometimes causing expensive damage.
Coolant is the liquid that helps keep the engine at a safe temperature. If a hose fails and coolant leaks out, the engine can overheat fast and get damaged.
A serpentine belt is a belt in the engine bay that drives several important parts at once. If it breaks while you’re driving, the car can quickly lose power to things you need, so it’s smart to know when it was last replaced.
White lithium grease is a type of lubricant that helps moving metal parts slide smoothly. The host is saying it can work well on hinges, but it may not be ideal for locks because it can attract dirt.
The lock system is the set of parts that actually let your key and/or remote lock and unlock the car. If it gets gummed up, the key might not work when you need it most.
PB Blaster is a spray lubricant meant to loosen stuck metal parts. The host recommends it for locks and hinges so they keep working instead of getting stiff or failing.
Door hinges are the parts that let the door swing. If they wear out, the door can start to sag or make noise, and fixing it can be more work than just lubricating them.
Hinge pins are the small metal parts that let the door hinge move. When they wear out, the door can start to sag or feel rough, and you may need to replace the pins or the whole hinge.
The latch assembly is what actually keeps the door shut and lets it open when you pull the handle. If it’s worn out, you might have to replace more than just one small piece.
The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes into the car’s heating and air-conditioning. If it’s old, it can let in more dust and pollen, so replacing it helps the air feel cleaner.
A pollen filter is a cabin air filter that’s meant to catch pollen and other allergy-causing particles. It helps keep those irritants from getting into the car.
A fuel system cleaner is a chemical you add to your gas to help clean out gunk inside the fuel system. It can help your engine run smoother by keeping parts like the fuel injectors from getting clogged.
This is a cleaning service that tries to remove carbon buildup that forms inside the engine. If carbon builds up, it can make the engine run less efficiently—so cleaning it can help with things like fuel economy and idle quality.
A fuel filter is a part that cleans the gas before it goes to the engine. It traps dirt and tiny particles so the fuel system (especially injectors) doesn’t get clogged.
Microns are a way to measure extremely tiny particles. The smaller the micron number, the smaller the stuff the filter can catch.
LIVE
Good morning folks, you're tuned to Car Connection where the coffee's strong, the stories are
real and the wrenches never stop turning.
I'm your host, Nile Motormouth Jenkins, coming to you from the Car Connection Workshop where
the smell of fresh oil and a little elbow grease is all part of a balanced breakfast.
And around here we don't just talk cars, we live them.
Whether it's a 25 year old Jeep Wrangler getting a second chance at life, or an eSan
roll getting its brakes back in order, or it could even be a mystery leak that's got
everyone scratching their heads.
This is where we roll up our sleeves and get it done, with a little wit, a little wisdom,
and a whole lot of fun.
The Car Connection isn't just about nuts and bolts and diagnostics, it's about connection.
Connection to our vehicles, to the people who drive them, to the community that keeps
Niagara rolling.
Because when you fix a car, you're not just turning a wrench, you're restoring someone's
confidence, freedom, and maybe, just maybe, even their sanity.
We're here every week, Monday through Saturday, with the Motormouth Morning Drive helping you
keep your ride safe, reliable, and ready for whatever road lies ahead.
So whether you're a weekend wrencher, a daily commuter, or someone who just wants to understand
what that strange rattle really means, welcome aboard, stick around for shop talk, expert
advice, a few good laughs, and maybe a flashback shop story.
They happen at random, like I thought I was just about ready to have one there, but it's
kind of, it kind of fizzle farted out.
Anyhow, we'll have the, it's Wednesday, it's hump day, you know that, right?
Center of the week.
After today, we have crossed the Rubicon into the weekend, and it is quite humid out there
this morning, bright and early on the south shores of Lake Erie.
Very very humid.
So we're going to see what's, see what's in store for us today.
We'll have our morning swiggy in just a few moments.
So if you're in the queue for the drive-through, it is hump day, that can be a possibility
of the order getting messed up, double check it, triple check it, and then be on your merry
way.
So get your morning beverage ready.
If you're joining us for the first time, we really love our first time visitors, hope

It is a real commitment to be here six days a week with the motor mouth morning drive and
then Mondays are production.
That's when Skippy's here and we're shooting new videos and everything, I get everything
lined up the week, a couple of days of the week before for the next week's shoot and
then we do production on Monday and then throughout the week it's edit and launch and everything
else that comes along with putting the podcast together as well as the YouTube channel.
If you haven't signed up for our YouTube channel, you're missing out on a lot of information
because now being all digital, we have many ways for you to watch, listen and engage.
If you want to see Reels, bloopers and outtakes, you can see those on Instagram, Facebook and
Stevensville on the web.ca.
Our Skippy put that together many years ago to connect the businesses in Stevensville to
the community and it's been a great asset as well.
Over 20,000 people visit that website every single month.
Click on the Businesses tab, Skippy's put us in as the automotive expert so you'll see
articles there as well from us.
What else we got for you?
Oh yeah, our YouTube channel, yeah, five things.
You'll always learn five basic principles of vehicle owner and operating.
What it is, the component, where it is, if you can find it, how it works, if it is working
and number four, how it broke and number five, how we can teach you not to break it again
so it doesn't end up costing you more money.
Cha-ching, right, that's what I'm here for.
I'm here to teach you that you can have a very older, reliable automobile all paid off,
looking good and keeping it looking good and performing to its utmost because every day
even when you're making car payments and interest payments and trading time for money
to keep it, it's getting older and at some point it becomes 100% yours when the factory
warranty is done.
That means it's all on you.
So whether it's five years old, 10 years old, 15 years old, quarter century, you can still
have a well-performing older automobile and that's what I'm all about is, you know what,
keep them till you don't want it anymore.
Not you get to keep it until it says get lost.
I'm sick and tired, fed up and disgusted and bored with you.
You're treating me like a bad, bad donkey.
Okay, let's have our morning swiggy.
We say thank you to our certified financial planning professionals, Tony Miele and Larry
Tietro for bringing you this morning's swiggy and the Morning MotorMouth Morning Podcast.
Again, if you need some financial clarity, you've got stuff going on in your financial
side, sit down with that hour and a coffee, that discovery meeting, leave your wallet
at home, take your driver's license for sure or your purse and have that one hour discovery
session.
You can throw as many questions as you want at Tony Miele and Larry Tietro.
They have over a 50 plus years experience.
They both work with IG Wealth Management and I'll tell you, it doesn't matter what your
circumstances are, these guys know their way around it and how to help you to move you
forward.
So whether it's an investment portfolio that sucks and it's sitting at the bank making
you pittance or you're drowning in debt and you have no idea how you're going to get over
it, round it under it or through it, you don't have an estate plan whatsoever but you have
kids as old as 18 living at home and you're not their health proxy.
You need to arrange a mortgage where you'll be treated like a human being, not an asset
and or life insurance, critical illness insurance.
These are all things that seem like an expense till you need it.
So very wise investment, just like car insurance, don't get me started on that one.
So check in with Tony Miele or Larry Tietro, book that complementary one hour
session, discovery session.
We've nicknamed it the hour and a coffee.
They'll meet with you by zoom, by phone, in a coffee shop at your home if you're comfortable
with that in a box with a fox, whatever it takes, they're there to answer your questions,
give you the right information.
They are certified financial planning professionals.
That means they know how to work with money and how to get money working hard for you
and they know and understand tax planning and all the things that come along with that.
So raise your cup this morning.
Thank you Tony and Larry.
Great guys I've known for 20 years.
They are my financial planners and I'll tell you they are my brothers from other mothers.
They always have an ear to coach you, help you and listen and listen more than talking
like me.
I yak, that's what I do.
That's it.
Short version is talk radio is yakking.
That's what we do.
This is 32 years for me.
Even before that my mother would say I never have to check on Nile.
He's always talking to somebody.
He never shuts up.
I remember my mother saying do you ever shut up?
Like really?
Do you?
No.
No mom, I don't think so.
She goes well sometimes it's good just to be quiet.
I go you know one day, one day mom this is going to be what I do.
Oh okay, so here we are.
You ready?
It's life has got to be a bit funny don't you think?
321 is the signal.
All right I bought you some time.
On 321 here we go.
Swiggy time.
I got to take it easy this morning.
I had a tooth surgically removed yesterday.
It wasn't too too bad until he got it totally frozen.
Then I had no idea what was going on and then yeah it was all over except the crying.
I feel like there's a hole there big enough to park a Mack truck in there right now.
So that's for a later date.
Man that was I'll tell you what.
I think mouth pain has got to be the worst.
Okay ladies we give you birth all right?
Absolutely that's the one over the top.
Absolutely but I think mouth pain is a very very close secondary pain level.
It absolutely is and I'll tell you when he got that thing out totally frozen.
He went to pull it out the first time and he said raise your hand if it's not quite right.
And it wasn't I could totally feel it and within seconds he was jabbing me
and with and putting some more whatever in there freezing stuff.
And then he grabbed it and I didn't even know it was gone.
I felt some you know some pressure and some cracking and some crunching and he says don't
don't worry about that that's that's normal.
As soon as that thing lifted off from my jaw bone the pressure and everything that came with that
for the last three months it was like this.
Ah like that feels really good right now even though it's frozen.
So anyways thanks thanks for all of you that sent up prayers for me I appreciate that.
I never used to be a white knuckled patient but after having a few really bad experiences
this past year from like about January till now.
Yeah it's been a rough go and I'm looking forward to moving ahead without mouth pain.
All right let's take a look at today's weather report.
I didn't even you want to see the tooth?
No I just want it away from me.
That thing has just been I haven't slept good for months because it wakes me up and
just pounding.
How many of you have suffered with that?
Let me know in the email motormouth.jankins at gmail.com.
Now I gotta now I gotta make some money to put some teeth back in my face.
Yeah exactly and it's just ridiculous kind of money.
Yeah that's okay we can finance that it'll be 11,500 bucks excuse me.
Did you did you say 11,500 dollars?
Did I hear you say 11,500 to have a few teeth put in there?
Where's a piece of mahogany I'll just get my waddling knife and make some teeth.
73 degrees right now in cloudy and it feels warmer about 75 degrees.
Sunny conditions from 6 a.m to 4 p.m and with partly cloudy conditions expected at 4 p.m.
Today's temperature range is from 73 to 88 so we're gonna top out at 88 degrees.
It's gonna feel more like 73 to 90 degrees.
I hope you have the nice breeze like we had yesterday along the south shores here
of Lake Erie.
Without that breeze it it's just it just get it pretty intense out there.
Stay hydrated remember to put your windows down on your vehicle about the
thickness of your thumb to let the heat get out because I have had a windshield pop
from a heat build up inside the vehicle so it's a great way not to.
I did remind you a little while about getting a little while ago I think it was earlier this
week about getting a sunshade for the front windshield and get a good one.
Get a really good one and I'll tell you what money well spent.
Night Park even at the dental surgery office on upper James and Hamilton kudos to them.
Great place to be great they're called Rockwood so if you want to check them out

because if there's one out there that's worthy of purchasing he'll grab it for you but if they're
not if they're junk he leaves them right where they belong someone else's driveway well I've
got five things again for you today is part three of our topic when was the last time
in regards to your automobile things to do with your automobiles so whether you're whatever age
height or anything single windowed divorce 100 times it doesn't matter if it's your job to take
care of the the vehicle you're driving you're in the right place right here because I can help you
save money and at the same time keep your vehicle long term and make it pay you back and in a big
way and it'll be reliable that's the key we want it to be reliable in the only way and I'm going to
say this and I step on some toes I don't care how old or how young the vehicle is the only way
you're going to get a return on that all that much time you've traded to time and money to trade
for an automobile is by maintaining it you are not going to get away with it it's that simple
these things are a piece of equipment equipment needs of maintenance all the time if we're going
to get things built and taken care of around this rock that we're spinning on your car is
no different it's a piece of machinery and it's mechanical and it's made by man and there's the
problem right there it's made by man all right don't get me going on that one this morning we'll
never get anything finished all right let's jump into our topic this morning I do have another
motormouth summer tech tip for you number 14 and I was just thinking isn't that interesting today is
the 14th of july j-14 and the motormouth summer tech tip just how falls right in line it's the 14th
so from here forward all the tech tips motormouth summer tech tips will match the calendar I didn't
do that on purpose but it happened just so you know what motormouth tech tip will be tomorrow
the 15th the fit number 15 so today's the title of today's motormouth summer tech tip number 14
is fuels fuel systems need love too so let's jump in I'm giving you another five things that you
need to answer this question to when was the last time be as I mentioned each one
that's what you're going to hear me ask you ready all right let's go when was the last time
you replaced your accessory drive belt because they don't last forever folks I think I talked
about that earlier in the week when you look down and if you see a shiny flat black thing then that
means it's worn down you better get it off of there before extreme damage happens it's not a component
you want to mess with and see how far it goes before it breaks
yeah did you hear that before it breaks because it will cause a horrendous it can
and it more than likely will cause a horrendous amount of damage your accessory drive belt is
one belt drives all pretty much there's not too many vehicles now that have multiple
serpentine drive belts they've really the manufacturers really gone to this one belt does
everything number two when was the last time you actually inspected all the lights all the
way around the vehicle that you drive and the reason I mentioned that is that gives a the
popo an opportunity to pull you over and make you extremely late for work and I'll give an example
and the officer actually lied to me and I knew he was but I wasn't going to you know make a big
deal about it I'm coming through the big town of Dunville Ontario you know where the big catfish is
Wally I think his name is they repainted him so I heard after all these years I went with some
point I have to have a look a look you see I'm going through Dunville and it's wee hours the
morning I'm heading to Buffalo to do a broadcast and I get pulled off in town and buddy says to me
I look at me go so why why did you pull me over all your license plate lights are out
and they're right right away in my head I'm going not on your nut buddy I'm I'm more anal than that
I do a walk around to make sure all my lights are working because I don't want to have
that particular moment happen to me so you know you got to go through the whole rigamarole here's
this and here's my insurance and blah blah blah at the time and then he goes back to the car
and I'm thinking it would be a good time to have a box of donuts right now
but I didn't they were waiting for us at the station so that wasn't going to help
but I did have hot coffee which was good so he comes back and he goes all right everything's
good you know slow down a little bit and I'm thinking I came through town at 30k what how much
more how much slowed would you like me to go it says you know 50 and I'm
actually doing 30 coming through town because I know in in Dunville that can be a place where
you get pulled over if you're 5k over so be careful if you're out that way and people do need to
slow down like on the red hill expressway yesterday heading up to upper james got big flashing signs
slow down and my pops was with me he wanted to come along for the ride and uh I said yeah that'll
work he started laughing I go yeah that's we don't need officers out there pulling you over to tell
you to slow down we just need a big flashing sign that shows no threat whatsoever of any kind of
discipline just saying slow down okay all right so anyways I digress a little bit there
so inspect all your lights and the other reason I'm saying that is I have a vehicle here
in the shop it's got to come back in I did one happy bearing you'll get to see
that on video I got to do the other side now so the other side's waiting for me but in the
interim doing a brake service and replacement on uh what is that a 20 2015 Jeep Chica P
yeah that's what's in the service bay well the uh the ml 350 has a headlight out
but John didn't say anything about headlight being out so that's what brought me to that point
are you checking stuff folks just do a walk around you know look at the tires see if there's
any kind of foreign object like a spoon or a fork or like a 716 bolt that's like three inches long
sticking out of the tire just a few things we used to see um partial bungee cord you know the
hooked portion yeah that's that that tends to be nasty so if you see a bungee cord that's broken
and there's only half of it there that means there is a sharp object on the opposite end
where the breakage is not that really goes into tires really well so don't drive over it thinking
it's okay because it'll jam itself in the tire then that bungee cord slapping the plastic
inner fender liner and it generally rips it apart just so just saying so do a walk around
so i'm going to send a text to john just say were you wanting to be a one-eyed bird or would you
like me to to see about bringing you know the other headlight back on board for you before the
polpo pulls you over to tell you you got a headlight out and he might even give you a ticket i don't
know that's possible number three when was so anyways when was the last time you did a walk
around on your vehicle to check and make sure tires are looking good and all the lights are working
number three when was the last time you had hoses in the cooling system replaced
yeah they're they're only good for two to five years five is pushing it yeah if you go and look
at gates canna which is one of the major manufacturers of belts and hoses and things like that
they say two years but i would say between two and five years hoses need to be replaced before
they tell you on one of the 400 series highways in the traffic that it's going to let go and
spew your coolant everywhere and overheat your engine possibly damage your engine your transmission
so hoses are generally not visible that the rod that things are wrong with the hoses from the
outside they rot from the inside out that's the problem so you have to go by years and mileage
so if you got a pack of mileage on there like say 250 plus you really should be having your tech
begin the process of updating those hoses before they blow again don't spin the roulette wheel
because hoses may are very cheap in comparison to blowing out your your engine and your automatic
transmission okay so there's money to be invested there to protect the big goodies yeah the big
stuffs that keeps that vehicle rolling so don't push it i just did a huge upgrade upgrade in the
spring evaluation on our o7 fj it's close to 400 000 i changed a whole whack of cooling system hoses
and in fact i set them aside and i bagged them because if you're on a long trip and something
should happen one of those hoses could save your bacon so i pack them in the vehicle with me along
with the old serpentine belt that also got replaced that in a pinch on a road could be
something that saves you from losing time on a vacation or a weekend away you can get it changed
so number four when was the last time you lubed your locks and hinges we have all become so reliant
on the remote system that we don't even think about if you had to actually put a key in the
keyhole will it work and what we don't want to use and i've got two vehicles here that somebody's
still using white lithium grease on the hinges and i hope not on the lock system because it's too
sticky and it attracts the dust we use other products now one of the best ones that a good
friend of mine who is a locksmith for a 1.5 million years pb blaster that's what you put in the locks
that's what you put on the hinges so pb like peanut butter blaster no they don't support the show but
i have a monstrous can on the side of my toolbox all the time and i'll tell you it is a fantastic
product i love it to pieces so you want to use pb blaster in those locks and make sure that the
locks are working the product that's in the blue and yellow can is no good for hinges
locks i won't even allow it in the shop because there's too much alcohol in it i call it face
remover so if we have to heat something and it's covered in that stuff that's in the
blue and yellow can it flares up it'll take your eyebrows and your eyelashes clean off in a second
so i do not allow that into and never allow that into my shop on the Hamilton mountain i don't bring
it in the shop here so use the pb blaster get those locks working because when the remote
stops working that's when panic sets in and if the locks aren't working the key don't matter
so that's what you want to be putting in the lock holes and on your door hinges as well so you
don't wear them out and that's an expensive thing you've got a worn out door hinge and the door
sagging or it's grunching when you close it that's uh time and materials to replace that hinge or
replace hinge pins i just changed the hinge by the amount of time it takes to put a hinge pin in
i just take the whole latch assembly the whole hinge off and change it in fact i did i did one on
the nissan roguette door was hanging on the driver's side i bought a hinge and i had to
had to work it to get it out of there but i'm good at that and without having to take the fender off
and replaced it and now the door closes so nice it's crazy good and last but not least number five
my favorite not really i'm almost got that wrapped up the the 2003 beetle cabin air filter
mouse condo system has been fully circumvented now cleaned and protected from hand to virus
it's ready to build it back now but i've got to get it back in the shop so everything's moving
along never anticipated that so number five is when was the last time you had a cabin filter
ie pollen filter hepa filter whatever you want to call it replaced i leave that in your hands
so now to wrap this up
a quote from billy zeoli and you can check who billy zeoli is if not i who if not now
when when it comes to vehicle maintenance friends if it's not going to be you who's it going to be
you know you ever be in those circumstances where if it's going to be it's up to me
and that's the way i live my life is uh most of the time i'm on my own doing things on my own
and you figure out how to get it done safely on your own and who's got to do it
look in the mirror you know the cheese stands alone right exactly so if not i who
who if not now when so when are you going to start taking care of your automobile
10 of 10 more down the road that you're trading time for money to pay for it and interest
or are you going to just accept it's a piece of equipment and i want to look after it that's a
lot of money sitting there in that driveway that's what you need to think about when you look out the
window and you see your car sitting there in the driveway you know what you need to say to yourself
and say it out loud that's a whole lot of money sitting right there that's a whole lot of money
that's a whole lot of time and visits to work to pay for that that is a ton of money sitting right
there treat it like that that's where the mindset changes it doesn't matter who you are your age
group whatever your your marital status is your single your divorce your recently widowed
and you need to take care of your automobile it's it's you if it's to be it's up to me
that's what you got to say to yourself and that's why i'm here for you so let's jump into the motor
mouse summer tech tip and i'm going to wheel on out of here because i got a ton of stuff to do
because i was out uh on the road trip to uh have a nasty tooth removed and i was glad to say goodbye
to that sucker let me tell you i'm not in pain today how cool was that that's very cool after
three months of hell yeah all right here's your motor mouth summer tech tip number 14 fuel your
fuel system needs some love too and we were just talking about this the other day cauliflower carbon
well let's talk fuel summer blends can run a little different and high heat means your engines
working hard consider a fuel system cleaner every couple of tanks but keep your injectors clean and
your ride running smooth cheap easy and your miles per gallon might just thank you having a full
blown fuel injection decarbonization service once a year pays for itself over and
again in increased fuel economy performance idle the whole gamut all comes together because fuel
is not clean no matter how many commercials they run uh compared to all the fuel filters i pulled
apart there's this black stuff that comes out of the filter and you can see that on our youtube
channel we actually recorded that i took a fuel filter apart and showed you what actually came
out of it so if the filter if the fuel is clean where did that come from and here's the thing
that's oh your your tanks contaminated every single car that i take the filter out of and shake it
and dump out the contents comes out black so every tank is contaminated with what black stuff
it looks like charcoal and what filters fuel filters are are not just filters they purify
your fuel so there's a series of screens inside that filter out microns down to point 00
01 micron smaller much smaller than a grain of sand basically takes out silt
so again where does that black stuff come from check out the video it's in uh i think it's in our
early our early years uh within the first 50 videos there'll be a fuel filter uh video in
there and i'm showing you exactly what i'm talking about right now so you can see it for yourself
the black stuff that comes out and that's what plugs up the filter the fuel is not clean the
fuel filter is telling us the story that it's not and it's purifying the fuel before it heads to
the front of the vehicle now i just wanted to mention this morning that uh this series that i'm

About this episode
The hosts kick off with real shop stories and frame the episode around “five simple vehicle checks” drivers often skip. They remind listeners that once the factory warranty ends, “at some point it becomes 100% yours when the factory warranty is done.” The checklist covers an accessory drive belt, a full exterior-light walk-around, cooling hose age, and cabin air filters. They also share practical heat-comfort tips—like using a sunshade—and explain why fuel contamination shows up as black material when filters are removed.
Preventative maintenance isn't glamorous, but it can save you thousands in unexpected repairs.
