Automated perfection comes in the form of two letters, A and U.
Long live my LTD.
Welcome to Car Talk.
It's Tuesday night here in 98.9, Northwest FM.
It's me, Matty J, in the studio.
By myself tonight, no Alan here.
But online with Mr. Scottie Doe-Johnson,
Mr. Edward Bunting, and Mr. David Bunting,
and Mr. David Bunting, and Mr. David Bunting,
and Mr. David Bunting, and Mr. David Bunting,
and Mr. David Bunting, and Mr. David Bunting,
and Mr. David Bunting.
Mr. Edward Bunting and Mr. David Prince,
how are you gentlemen?
Very well, thank you.
Hello everyone, yes, good.
Hello, doing well, thank you.
It's good to see you guys.
How are you, Matthew?
I'm doing very well, thank you, Edward Bunting.
Very good, it's good.
Good to hear.
I'm doing very, very well.
As good as I can be, Edward.
As good as I can be.
Good as I can be, good.
So yeah, that's always good.
Let's crack on with some car updates.
Edward Bunting, it's been a while since we've seen you.
Yeah, a couple of weeks.
You've been in the abyss.
Yeah, been on on Tuesday nights,
but car updates, where were we last time?
I sold a few things.
I don't think I've been on since I sold a few things.
So the Ford Focus, the little 33,000K hatch,
went on car sales, I put that on,
and marketplace.
The first couple of days, nothing,
very quiet, and I thought,
I might have this for a while.
And then all of a sudden, bang, bang, bang,
a few decent inquiries came through
all in one hit from both mediums,
and a bit of Facebook.
And yeah, first to see, we'll buy, you know,
guy from the country bought that as his little run around.
And I actually drove it down to sort of Seaford
and met him there near his relative's house
and handed it over and got the train home.
Oh well.
The only problem was,
slightly before that I'd been at the wrecker
getting a grill for the CRV
that is currently in stock.
And so I was carrying this big grill
and my friends were laughing at me
when I was talking to them on the phone,
like, so you're traipsing around Seaford Station
with a grill in your hand.
I'm like, that's right.
Yeah.
Probably didn't look at a place, I'm guessing.
Probably didn't look at a place in Seaford.
You know, that's how they roll.
Was that one of the fancy new stations?
No, this is a very old station.
Oh, okay.
No, very old school, but nice.
I like the amenities there.
There was a cafe nearby that I did dine at
to getting on the train.
So I sold the Focus.
The next day I sold the Kia Rio that I had in stock,
the little 17 Rio with 35Ks on it.
That was very fortuitous.
I really, I had a couple of inquiries on that,
but not as much as the Focus.
And the guy that rang me up on that,
he had the exact same car that had just been written off
and he's just replacing it.
Oh really?
Except he's done double the Ks
and so that worked out quite nicely.
I was like, yep, you can have it.
What else did I have floating around?
Well, the CR-V has been...
We've talked about that, I think, on another podcast.
So I'm driving around in that.
Currently it's had a new windscreen in it.
The Wasp Varada has had both
rocker cover gaskets done and the distributor seal done.
It's had a wheel alignment.
It's had a new windscreen yesterday.
So it is looking, and I gave it a wash,
it's looking pretty good.
Pretty good.
It has developed, I think, a leak
from the left-hand steering rack boot.
So we'll see how we go with that.
It might need some more surgery before it gets a roadworthy.
I just was like, oh, I'm in so deep with this thing now.
I just have to keep going.
You can't stop now.
I drove the Mooc.
Oh, that had its new fuel pump fitted away
by my Mooc friend.
So I paid him some money to come and do that.
So I drove that on the weekend in sunshine.
So that's, you know,
driving as well as it ever did.
However, it is leaking
reasonably from,
I think it's the rear main seal
because it's coming out of the hole in the bottom of the gearbox
and the rear main seal is the only seal up above that.
So, yeah, the Mooc guy had to look at that
because there was a little puddle on the ground
and I was like, oh, it doesn't usually do that.
But it is now.
So I was hoping taking it for a drive
would sort of, you know, reseal the seal
and you wouldn't need to pull the motor and gearbox out.
But yeah, it's like you can still drive it.
It's just got a half decent leak.
So it's joining some of my other cars
that have got half decent leaks.
Leaky friends.
Leaky friends.
As you say, David Prince.
Safety feature.
Safety feature.
Anyway, that's that.
I still haven't pulled the petrol tank
send unit out of the Merc Coupe.
I've just been dealing with these other things,
but I'll get to that this week, I think.
And the and the wasp will go in to have its rear bumper
and mirror caps painted this week as well.
Maybe tomorrow morning I'll drop that off.
Yellow.
In Lalo.
I did put the said grill from the 29th
that it was carrying on to the CR-V.
Replace the front fog light on the CR-V
with the one I got from the Wrecker.
Oh, what else?
I think that's it for car news.
Actually, another box of parts arrived for that today.
Another three parts.
I thought that all were what you picked up the other day.
Wow.
But another box arrived with, I think,
Swayba Link.
Well, I'll be needing those, David.
I'll be dropping them in tomorrow, Edward.
Oh, thank you so much.
You're coming past anyway.
I'll be in the area.
Oh, good, good.
Okay, thank you.
Was that from Rock Auto, David?
It was.
I had a delivery from Rock Auto this morning as well.
Our new best friends.
They've always been good friends.
I know.
Love it.
I did a job for a workshop even more than the other day,
and they had a Lexus SC430 in.
Oh, yeah.
Electric hardtop roof thing that looked a bit like a bloated
Porsche Boxer.
I remember them.
And he said, oh, you know, the guy wanted the seats done in
this car.
I said, oh, yeah, that's fine.
I can do that.
He said, he's throwing some money at it.
I've just given him a bill for eight grand.
Oh, and he's doing that.
I said, all the bush has gone.
Everything's gone.
You know, there's so hard to find bits for.
I said, have you ever tried a place called Rock Auto?
I don't know what you're talking about.
I don't buy parts from America.
You know, I don't want to do that.
They'll be the wrong person.
They sell in America compared to here.
I mean, they saw bucket loads over there.
So I said, oh, yeah, that's up to you.
Oh, no, so and so from Petters source me something
and rather than the worst, you know,
so yeah, I just thought, okay.
Who is this, this customer?
Oh, we'll remain unknown moment.
But but yeah, I, it's, it's not worth, you know,
what's that expression casting pills before swine?
You know, like, it's just, yeah, yeah.
We know that we know where to go here.
I advise and educate people the right thing to do.
And but at least some people don't want to be educated.
So that's all right.
Hey, more.
Yep.
Lucky.
I mean, it's all, but also too, like, you know,
I suppose, gentlemen, we're kind of in the fray.
Like, like what we, we know where we can,
we know where we can get, you know,
decent pricing from and how to get parts.
But like, but there's some, there's some mechanics
that just like, like, I can't get it.
Sorry, mate. Can't do it.
Yeah.
Can't get it.
Can't do it.
Can't do it.
Am I pretty?
That's what we said.
I can't do it.
Yeah.
Covid.
What was it?
Covid.
I can't.
It's the line.
That's the line I get.
So yeah.
But anyway.
So yeah.
So that that's your car updates.
That's me.
Yeah.
No more for me.
We also joined by Rob's die.
How are you Rob?
Rob.
How are we all?
Good.
Good.
Thank you.
With the CEO.
We just started car updates.
David Prince updates with you.
David Prince updates with you.
David Prince updates with you.
David Prince updates with you.
David Prince updates with you.
David Prince updates with you.
Okay.
Get this right.
Okay.
We're getting this.
Yes.
So Ed's seen it.
I don't know any of you.
Others have seen it.
I had my garage in 85 under a cord hatchback.
Belonged to a good friend of mine.
We found a new car.
I've been offered to help get rid of the other one.
So I thought I'd better check that for a road worthy.
That car has is 40 years old.
It's done 105,000 K's for road worthy.
It needs wiper blades.
A clutch rubber.
On the pedal.
Yeah.
Yeah.
A rubber on the clutch pedal.
Yeah.
Oh, damn.
One more thing.
What was the other thing?
One more thing.
It comes to me.
It comes to me.
One more thing.
So insignificant.
It's ridiculous.
Wow.
And an engine wash because they recommend doing the
rocket cup, the sump and the dizzy seal.
That's fine.
They're simple.
Yeah.
I could also then paint the rocket cover.
But how is that for a 40 year old car?
Also, I recommend doing it, but you didn't have to do those.
No, no.
They didn't have to do it for a road worthy.
But they'd want the engine washed out.
I can tell that there is an oil leak somewhere.
But obviously they're leaking oil on the ground.
No, no.
It's a safety feature.
That is very good.
I mean, it's been very well serviced that carpet.
As we know, servicing doesn't equate to being road worthy
necessarily.
Correct.
Correct.
So they've just given me the report.
Yeah.
And it's three items that are required for road.
Oh, damn.
I'll have to look up on my phone in a sec.
What the other one was.
But, but yeah, I just thought that was nuts.
Yeah.
Yes.
I was already to, you know, bang on a rock order
again and try and find if they've got anything for 85
which is going to get it will be.
Yeah.
But yeah, I thought that was pretty impressive.
Very impressive.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
That's, that's, that's remarkable.
I don't know what the, what the thing for what the
regulation around the age of ties is.
I think they're about seven years old.
The tires on this.
Oh, that's fine.
That's fine.
Yeah.
And of course they've done no case.
You know, it's only done 105 in 40 years.
So, um, yeah.
So yeah, I thought that was pretty cool.
I thought.
But still no, no sale on that car yet through the.
No, no, no.
We've still, still in.
But, you know, I said, well, look, I'll check and
find out what it needs.
Yeah.
And, and just so we were four armed as four
warned, you know, then we know what we've got to do.
Yeah.
So when I picked up the 88 accord from the
neighbor's garage, I mentioned that one.
That's, that's gone to have that have the
work done on that.
We would.
That's also a rock order.
Because I sold a gazillion of them over there.
Is that running?
Not yet.
No, no.
There's a couple of cars ahead of it.
But it's, it's, it's in the, in the queue.
Okay.
Cover.
That's the main thing.
But, um, but because that we extracted the car out of
that garage, that I had some lovely garage space.
So I negotiated to have two cars in there.
I was in there.
One for two.
Uh, so the Grand Prix Civic is in there and the N1.
Cause they were the easiest to sort of pop over there.
But unfortunately they're not all in there.
And I didn't have access to the garage.
So, um, now the accord's been dropped down to,
cause the 85 accord was in the garage.
So now that's been was going down on Monday on Sunday
afternoon.
I saw my neighbor was at the house.
So I quickly messaged him and said, Oh, you know,
I should get those cars out of your garage.
He said, Oh, no, hurry at all.
I said, Oh, well, can I, he said,
I can leave them here as long as you like.
We don't need the garage.
And I thought, Oh, oh, oh.
And then I thought, I missed the N1.
I want to drive the N1.
You know, you need a key to the garage.
Just get a key.
I haven't got a key to the garage.
Why won't they give you a key?
You met them.
Security.
Security is very important.
Oh, of course.
Is it okay if I just get one out and leave one in there?
He said, yeah, no problem at all.
So he used the key.
Open the garage.
I got the N1 back into my garage.
Yes.
So now I've got it back and all is right with the world.
The world feels a better place.
If I want to take the Grand Prix for a fang,
we've got to wait for the planets to align.
Correct.
But they will.
They will.
I mean, he's there most weekends and he said,
anytime just ring me and I'll come over and,
and he's in the same sub of probably,
you know, for two, five minutes away.
That.
Oh, okay.
But yeah, I mean, I don't want to just,
you know, disturb it anytime, but there could be,
you know, if there's a chance of a long term,
long term rental is what you need there.
Correct.
Anyway, so that's good.
Oh, and I was working at a Eastern dealer in the eastern suburbs
today at the Honda dealer, Eastern Honda.
And I was working on a car, which was actually a cherry,
which is a bit of concerning.
They're now cherry Doncaster as well as Eastern Honda.
So I was working on this cherry and this guy came
and said, oh, what are you doing?
Mechanic guy, Asian fellow.
I thought incorrectly that he was Chinese because I said,
oh, you're cherry tech.
He said, oh, no, no, no, no, Honda Honda tech.
I said, he said, I'm Japanese.
I worked at Honda in Japan.
Oh, wow.
Did you really?
He said, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So he said, I love Australia and I've come
and I've found this job.
And I said, oh, you know, do you like Honda?
Oh, I love Honda.
I said, what do you have?
Do you have a Honda?
He said, oh, yes.
And he has a first gen Civic RS.
Oh, wow.
Oh, wow.
And so he showed me all the photos of his dark metallic green
first gen Civic RS with a boot.
Two door with a boot.
That's a special car.
That's a really interesting car.
Serious, serious one.
And I said, oh, I have, I have a Honda.
I have, well, I have a few Hondas.
I said, he said, oh, really?
I'd love to see them.
I said, this could take a while.
Yeah.
I just started scrolling.
Yeah, there was lots of sagoy going on.
It was, it was very.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
It was, it was a very funny.
He liked your Hondas.
He did.
He was very impressed.
And I saw the N1 and the, and the scam together.
His eyes nearly popped out of his head.
It was, it was funny.
He didn't put this with what was in the phone.
You know, it didn't sort of figure that.
Well, you wouldn't.
I mean, you're driving a Volkswagen Caddy repairing a
Cherry.
And I looked like that guy.
That guy's into Hondas.
It's not, you know.
It's, it's correct.
Correct.
So, yeah.
It's good.
It's like the time I was on it.
I was on a zoom call with a work colleague.
In New Zealand.
Well, a loose work colleague.
They're sort of, you know, sister company sort of thing.
And I'd met him on quite a few calls.
He's a young guy.
He's 20 sort of thing.
And he's, he's got a Porsche and something else.
He's quite into his cars and is imported a few from Japan.
And somewhere about the third phone call on there with a
mutual colleague.
And this guy goes, oh, you know, you're a bit of a car guy.
You know, you went to cars.
I'm like, I suppose you could say that, you know?
He goes, oh, do you have any cars?
And I said, yeah, I've got a few.
Oh, well, what have you got?
And I just went, I got this.
And by the time I got to sort of the fifth one, he's just
like looking at me like, um, yeah, I think you're a car guy.
I was like, thanks for the accolade.
But same sort of thing.
It is very, very funny.
Like we just hadn't talked about that topic.
So it hadn't come up.
And he's like, what?
Yeah, we're not car guys.
We're just hoarders.
Yeah.
Collectors.
No, no, no, no, no.
Rob, you're great.
I've got to correct you.
We're not hoarders.
We're collectors.
Hoarders collect everything.
Collector.
They collect.
We just collect car stuff and cars.
So I'm particular even about what cars are.
Collect and car stuff.
Okay.
You know, a hoarder sees a bit of plastic in the street
and goes, oh, use that one day, you know,
and sort of way at their house.
And they have goat tracks, you know,
to walk through the house through goat tracks.
I've gone down that deep hole, Rob.
I'm, I'm, I'm holding onto that explanation.
Yeah.
All right.
Just as long as I don't see our garages.
We all have our guilty pleasure garage.
Yes.
Well, who are we up to?
So I think we're up to Scott.
Me.
Um, before I jump into my updates,
I noticed David, you were away last week.
From the podcast.
Yeah.
True.
Was I?
No, no, no, you are.
That was the previous week.
Previous week.
Previous weeks.
The previous week.
Where were you?
Oh, Scott.
That's a bit personal.
David can't talk about his mistress live on air.
Um, I was at a car club committee meeting.
Hmm.
Hmm.
You're the president.
Oh, that was the.
Yes.
Yes.
I was elected the president again.
Congratulations.
Yeah.
Congratulations.
Oh, my relations or.
Well, it was.
I had someone on it.
I had someone on the inside that was there and was listening
into some of these policies and things that you want to bring in
is pretty radical.
Oh.
So.
To start off, he wants everyone to call him El Presidente.
I don't know what's going on there.
Um,
he wants stickers and caps made up that all say make Hondas
great again.
Which was.
I thought they kind of are great anyway.
So I don't.
But hey, he wants everyone to have those.
It's not it's it's it's a mega.
It's matter.
It's not.
Yeah.
That's like the name of the Middle Eastern restaurant.
It does.
It's my grandma.
It's my auntie's name actually.
And he's got you need to bring offerings to your leader
every week.
Whoa.
It's a big sonic orange.
Preferably Honda related or Japanese related things.
So you've got to bring offerings to him as well.
Kind of weird.
The power's gone to his head.
Yes.
But he's thinking about keeping people fit.
So on Fridays he's bringing in jazzy size Fridays.
Which would make sense because.
The fit in Japan.
So there you go.
Yeah.
He wants to bring in some jazzy size Fridays.
And bring in the accord accord.
A binding treaty that all disputes in the club must be
settled inside a Honda Accord.
Yeah.
There's a few things that he's doing.
So.
And that's just a preview.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Wait for his final concerto.
Yeah.
Where are they made in Kyoto?
Where were what mate?
The Hondas.
The main ones.
They're not in Kyoto sadly.
I wish they were.
Perfect city then wouldn't it.
So that's just a few things that he's been up to now.
Right.
I'll keep you posted if there's anything else new happening.
He's got his snitches at it again.
He's back.
Yeah.
He's back.
Ladies and gentlemen, he's back in a while.
Have you been working on that one all week, Scotty?
It's thought of it a while ago.
It just came back to me today.
David Prince, your comments please.
Yes.
Comments.
Solid.
My people will get back to you.
Oh, to have people.
That'd be great.
He's got his little minions now.
You can just do things.
Not much changes I don't think.
I think I was doing the same stuff.
I guess I can move into my car updates now.
Yes, Scotty.
I had my fun.
On Sunday, I did something that brought the weather today.
Oh.
I washed the car.
I did.
Just don't bother.
Just don't bother.
I wasn't going to, but I've got this.
I'm pretty sure it's a first world problem,
but there's this tree at work.
And even if I don't park near it,
I'm pretty far away from it,
but somehow I still get like sap that will drop on it.
And also it's starting to bloom and gets covered in pollen
and stuff on it too now from this tree.
So it's just kind of bugs me.
I did.
I parked away from it.
It still happens.
I don't know how it's getting over there.
It's just travel.
Drives me nuts.
But yeah, first world problems, I guess.
I mean, my solution is to chop down the tree,
but I don't think they'll do that.
Well, I mean, I mean, let's be honest.
That's like the, you know, that's the melee solution.
Just just just get rid of it.
So you can definitely do that.
And then I thought,
I better go over and see how the 31 is doing.
It's just sitting there chilling.
And I did have an idea of what I wanted to do.
And that was actually fix that side mirror properly
because I was going to get the tech screws
and put it in there properly because it's where it snaps.
It's all plastic and plastic sucks.
It gets old.
And I just got completely sidetracked,
which happens quite often and I completely forgot to do it.
So it's still kind of sitting there
and not really held on very well.
I ended up just kind of letting the car run for a bit
and fiddling around with all these other things.
And I got that thing I told you last week
for the Fenders, whatever it's called.
I don't know. I can't remember what it's called.
Guard Roller.
Yeah, Guard Roller.
I don't know why I keep forgetting.
I keep getting Fenders stuck in my head.
Fenders like American.
Fender.
Well, Fender, sure, yeah.
Yeah. I'm like, what the hell?
But anyway, that's stuck in my head.
And then I opened the box
and I see you got to assemble the whole bloody thing.
I'm like, what the hell?
And then the instructions isn't even like instructions.
It's just a picture.
You know, when you get the,
it's when you get a picture of, say,
a brake caliper and they expand it,
like break it apart.
So you can see all the different part numbers for all the bits.
That's the instruction was that.
So I've got to try and decipher this in the expanded form
and shrink it down to realize and figure out
what part goes where because none of the parts
and bolts in that were labeled.
So it gives you a picture and you go,
okay, and then you see it down the bottom
and it just says what it's called,
not the length or anything.
And there's like multiple ones of very similar lengths.
What the hell?
That was quite fun.
I can imagine you sweaty doing the whole leg grill.
What the hell is that?
Yeah, it's just so stupid,
the picture that they gave you.
That's a nice looking car roll.
Why does it look like that?
It's all upside down and wonky.
It's just like, what the hell?
That's not going to roll anything.
It won't even roll down my driveway.
So that was that.
But I finally did it and then by the end,
I just put it in the passenger seat for now.
It's like, that's another day now.
I've built it.
I'll roll it out later.
So then I don't have to worry about the scraping
and stuff anymore.
And then I was driving home and I realised,
oh yeah, the whole reason I was going there
was to do the side mirror.
Yeah.
You need a list in your phone.
Yeah.
I thought my brain was good enough
but it gets distracted too easily.
ADHD.
E.
The reboot sorted.
No, not yet.
Yeah, I like that idea.
Thank you very much for that.
That is what I shall do.
Thank you, Scottie.
Rob, what goes with you?
Well, my colleague
went to Noosa for holidays.
She used her house up there and she had to get rid of her car.
And it was a golf
for convertible.
And she couldn't get rid of it.
So she gave it away for $200.
Oh, wow.
And it had low Ks on it.
Just on 100,000 Ks on it.
She was the second owner.
She's had it from,
the only thing it needed was a set of tyres
and some brake pads.
And she got rid of it for $200.
So I missed out on the bargain, I thought.
And what year was that?
That's 2003.
Invertible golf.
Invertible golf.
So they looked a bit round and blunky.
Yeah.
They were a nice looking car.
Yeah.
When they had decent wheels on them,
the factory wheels were too small.
So I'm kicking myself or not.
And I missed it out on that.
But anyway, obviously,
she didn't let me know.
She let everyone else know,
but I wasn't in the meeting that morning.
So anyway, missed out on the car.
The VWGC, you're probably better off without it, Rob.
It was a manual too.
Oh, that's a shame.
Yeah, I know.
Anyway, so I'm still driving my range around.
I went for a trip down in Geelong in my range.
My range of sport.
This is about 12 points,
something liters per 100
on the highway.
Which is not very good, I thought.
Did you feel the anger
starting to kick in?
No, not yet. No, no.
It's okay. It's all good.
Is your case manager good back to you?
Anger comes from Ranga.
Ranga.
I don't feel the anger from the Ranga.
But I've been driving that around.
It's actually an alright car.
It doesn't make any noises.
There's no diff noises, no squeaks.
It's
quite comfortable to drive.
But
when to get the Mercedes
out on the weekend.
The 380 SCC
so that a guy can start painting it.
But he
still hasn't done anything.
So that's pretty much my disappointment with cars
this week.
What happened to the transit?
Well,
they said they replaced a diff twice.
And when I got a third time
it still winds when you decelerate
between 95 down to about
70 kilometres an hour.
So you can hear that whirling noise
as you let go of the accelerator.
They reckon that's normal because I've removed the barrier
so I can hear it.
If you put the barrier back up, I can't hear it.
So I said, well, if I put ear plugs in, I won't be able to hear it either.
But that's
that's typical of that car
and that's what they do.
But you're going to sell that anyway, yeah?
Well,
I'm not happy with it.
So yeah, I'll end up selling it.
I'm not going to fit it out.
I need to have problems with it.
And the diff slips
when it's cold, but it's not the diff.
The gearbox slips when it's cold.
And they're saying that the gearbox
is usual with intolerance
of slippage when it's cold.
And that's fine.
That's a joke. That's ridiculous.
It shouldn't slip.
It's a gearbox. They're not meant to slip.
Yeah, well, it does.
It's probably a
variable transmission
or something. It's one of those
Nissan gearboxes in it or something.
I think you need a Toyota, Rob.
Yeah.
Toyota don't make vans that size.
I think it'd have to go.
They don't make the high roof vans.
I want a high roof van
that I can fit out.
But you can die starier.
You know what?
I've actually went to
Jayco a few weeks back
and I saw a
Fiat Sunny
here in a half-old.
Sorry?
No.
It's not warranty.
Yeah, it still doesn't make it good.
Vans that had a warranty too.
Yeah, it doesn't make it good.
Just go buy a good car.
That's three times as much.
It's not necessarily good sometimes.
It's not being a tight-ass or buy a second-hand camper van.
Well, with
300,000 or 400,000 kilometres on it.
That's all right.
Land Cruiser 100 will do
800, 900 a minute.
That's a Land Cruiser. That's not a camper van.
There's good camper vans out there.
Surely there's one out there that's already been done. That's good.
Yeah, and then you're paying
130,000.
Then you might as well buy a new one for 150.
I've got a better idea, Rob.
Stop it.
It's just
disgusting, David.
It's a constructive
criticism.
You drive your 380 SCC
and you stay in motels.
That's some fun.
King of the Roads.
Out in the middle of nowhere, we're going to sleep in the 380
SCC.
You stay in the motels.
You don't always have motels.
The road anything could happen.
People could come and attack.
Yeah, I could Wolf Creek or something like that.
Exactly.
Okay.
380 motel.
There's your answer.
Or 380
with roof racks, factory roof racks.
You can get them.
The hardshell rooftop 10.
I've already got the rooftop box for all 10.
Done.
Done.
I do.
Cars and coffee would win cars and coffee.
It's like having a 9-11 Porsche
with a tent on the roof.
Exactly.
I've got some ideas now.
I'm going to get
something more reliable.
A caravan.
Just buy a caravan.
What sort of caravan
are you going to buy for 5 grand?
You'd be lucky to find a 6x4 trailer
for that price.
Yeah.
You just buy a caravan
on the ranger and you're done.
Yeah.
True. I've got the ranger
rock.
I can steal off my son.
That's
actually not a bad car. It's been going real good.
He's clocked up close to 40,000
kms on that in 2 years I reckon.
Touch wood.
Made in Africa.
Yeah.
It seems to be going alright.
I'll see what I do.
If I can sell it,
I'll sell it.
It's handy. It's great to have a van.
I really enjoy having a van.
You could just go down the bunnings
and put your strips of timber in
when you're doing a bit of a Renault
and pick up all your stuff around the house
and take it down the tip.
It's so handy.
It's one of the best things around.
4K trucker would be awesome.
4WD one.
Not awesome on the highway though.
Yeah, I know.
It's the journey, not the destination.
Okay.
I'll give you a call
four hours into your trip up to Sydney
and see how you go with that.
Get me out of here.
I want my 380 SEC
with a rooftop dam.
I was okay
with the Jimny even.
I went down the highway
but my wife, my son hated it.
I like you and Jimny.
I thought you and Jimny was alright.
I thought it was alright.
I didn't mind it.
You can't have too many cars.
Currently I've only got seven cars
in the driveway and another three inside.
That's enough.
Surely one of them will take you around a straight
trip.
That's right, Amarok.
There you go.
I think I might take you C63.
Yeah, do that.
I reckon that would be awesome.
Get there fast.
There's not enough fuel across the null
where you'd have to carry fuel.
His car's pretty good on fuel actually.
Is it?
Yeah, it's not bad.
If you start going fast
it starts burning a bit.
Cruising along I think it does less than 13 litres,
isn't it, Holly?
About 13 litres per 100.
Yeah.
It's not bad, I guess, for that.
It's not bad for a V8.
Matthew, what about your cars?
What are you doing?
Update with me.
I got my Camry Roadworthy yesterday.
It is
roadworthy and we'll get
plates on Friday.
Who are you going through Club Ridge with for that?
Just the standard one that I normally
go with.
I don't have a Honda in my name yet
so I can't go through the Honda car.
They've got very strict rules
and the president would uphold that.
Not with Al Presidente.
Yeah, exactly.
Lucy Goosey, no more belly who?
It's because of you that the rules
change.
That is true.
I broke the system.
You did.
That's going to get done on Friday.
Mum's got a day in lieu
so he's going to do that for me.
Thanks, Mum, for that.
Going to take that down.
It didn't need too much.
They were quite
impressed with
the car that sat for so long that it didn't need
super amounts of work.
The bill got the bill.
It wasn't the cheapest
but it wasn't expensive.
$1,800?
$1,800.
It was $1,100.
It didn't get in my air-con fix too.
I got freezing cold air-con.
Air-con fix.
What was wrong with the air-con?
It just needed a gas.
You bought the guy out and the guy tested it.
He had no leaks.
He just needed a gas.
I think they converted it from one to the other
to the new gas.
So I did that
and then obviously
all the little jobs that needed.
Yeah, it's good.
The idle
air-control valve
is not great.
On a cold start it doesn't really like one of those
so I have to get one of those at some point.
I ordered a new one.
Just needed a cleaning?
They cleaned it out but it's still
not all right.
They said that to me.
We can clean it and they did but
it's not great.
I've got a new Dizzy cap
and
that came in today from the States
because you cannot buy them in Australia anymore
because that's just...
I ended up buying two rotors
because when they took my distributor
apart to replace the seal
they gathered it once over and said
you need a rotor button because it's pretty
had it.
I've got to put that in.
I can do that.
That's not too hard of a job.
What else?
Wind shield which got done
it drives really really well.
It surprised me how good that car drives.
I drove it home last night
after picking it up and then I drove it today
to drop it off to my mum so she can get it
sorted for Friday.
It just wafts about really nicely.
It drives really really well.
I had to put a thermostat in it as well
but as I mentioned last week on the show
I've ordered hoses for it
so heater hoses and radiator hoses
just because they're really old and crusty
and they decided to show a bit of staining
he's like look we put new clamps on it
it'll be fine but
for your piece of mind just put some new hoses on it
just to be safe and
happy motoring essentially.
Nice.
I've ordered those through my work
they had to get custom made because
they don't carry them so
you just tell them which ones and they'll make them for you
so they should be here at some point
this week but yeah
that's ready to go
I'm going to take it for a nice burn on Saturday
to the wreck is somewhere I haven't decided yet
but I'm going to give it its
first christening of a bit of a drive
to Dany Nol
Pick me up on the way.
Yeah, sounds good.
You're all more welcome to come in the Camry
I also got my Camry Chicken
if you guys remember
from the old Camry ads
You ordered those?
Yeah I found one online
a good friend Andrew Rigsworth found one
and now he's in a seatbelt in the back of the car
so he's
I've got a feeling indeed
I've got a feeling chicken
it's even got on a Toyota Motor Company
of Australia and then underneath
Made in China but still it's
it's a genuine piece
from the late 80s early 90s
so yeah I think
that's a nice little kind of addition
getting it ready for
Classic Japan which Edward
we can talk about tonight because you weren't here last week to discuss
I wasn't here last week
Matthew's had this silly
harebrained idea
of parking our three
Toyotas
in some sort of group formation
before with Andrew Rigsworth he's in
Rigsworth is in okay so four Toyotas
to recreate a showroom
circa 1989 I think
so you know my
Tarago was still the shape in
89 the
Camry Matthews Camry
has just got tick the MR2
in 1986 so no
88 so that
sort of fits in and what's
Riggles is one the Camry Wagon
she's a 90
or 91 maybe
might be 89
89 or 90 yeah
so we could have those
four in a bit of a formation but then Matthew's going
a step further and wants to
have a sign on the front of each car
that says the dealership name which is of course Ed Matthews
Toyota
absolutely
when he said it I was like it actually sounds like a
dealership yeah it does
Ed Matthews Toyota yeah
I've made the logo
I made the logo yeah
and then I said well if you're creating a bit of a
dealership we've got to put up some flags so we have to
get those and then
I said well
you need the Mingmole
someone who's going to have big 80s here
and sell you window tint and stuff it's
sort of a desk
and he goes yeah we'll roam around dressed like sales
consultants in like bad grey suits
with thin ties
and then
shorts with long socks
and then Steph has
agreed to be our
aftercare consultant
we're a big
wig
with a low cut top
and promote the window tint
and this is all happening when
December or November sometime
last day in November I think it is
yeah last Sunday November
November okay
so it's being held it's at a different place this time isn't it
the Crud and Farm
Crud and Farm yes down at
Damond with Murdoch's property yes
Sunday the 30th of November
Crud and Farm
well that will be a joyous event
it'll be fun like
we're going to try and put some table
like a couple tables and some pot plants
I reckon we can get a couple of big
rubber plants from Raffi
yeah rubber plants yeah
you might have to arrange it Matthew
Raffi doesn't probably want to deal with me anymore
after last time
when some of his plants didn't make it back to the nursery
oh okay
yes not my fault
okay I will
figure something out there
so yeah that is
that's the idea so Ed Matthews Toyota
it's got a ring to it
I think it works I think it sounds like a
dealership so
if it's got a motor bring it to Ed Matthews Toyota
is that our slogan? I think we can make
that work sure it's got a motor
bring it to Ed Matthews Toyota
I've just been collecting some paraphernalia
and stuff so I'm planning to
photocopy some of the brochures
and things of the cars of that era
you need to have a brochure giveaway copies
correct yes correct
so that'll be part of the event
so yeah
it should be a bit more fun but more details
to come on that as it happens gentlemen
I've been pretty much in on my car updates gentlemen
yeah tonight's topic
I know Edward loves these
who bought that new
is a topic that we're becoming quite
familiar with
I know Edward's a bit of a
not a stereotype
a stereotype
in terms of
who bought that
extreme personality vehicular profiling
correct
I've now started following this guy
on Instagram because
he's a car dealer himself
but he
profiles all these customers that come in there
and he's like you want this car
and a best price of course
yeah
so it got me thinking
we haven't done it in a while so we're bringing it back
so the first one I'm going to bring today is
someone that part of the crew has
he's not on tonight is a Ford Territory
Turbo
so they were quite expensive when they were new
they weren't cheap
I remember when we were looking at
Territory and I was like to that
oh just wait for the turbo it's coming wait for the turbo
we waited for the turbo
and then he freaked out at how expensive it was
he's like I don't need a turbo what for
what do I need this for
faster
so then he proceeded to say no we're not buying that
and because it was quite a substantial amount of money
more for a Territory gear
how much more was it like another 10 or 8?
I think it was almost 10 grand it was
quite considerably
I think it was close to 10 I think
from memory after double check that
it was a big jump
it was a big jump to
my dad's gear
so that was
again it was another step up from that
you gotta stop somewhere with this stuff
so
what year did the turbo come out?
06
that's when the turbo came out
so who bought out of like
they didn't sell many of them
that's actually quite a rare car
even more as the F6 Territory
which is like
good luck finding one but
who bought them when they were new
I mean I've got my idea
well
it surely would have been someone who had an XR6
turbo
but needed the extra room
I had another baby
gotta get the 7-seater
yeah that is true
but they didn't want to get out of there forwards mate
I'm with you
I'm with you on that
I think they would have said
I really like this drivetrain
and I want to stick to a Ford
but also I think
the type of person that bought a Territory turbo
also liked to kind of drive
because Territory didn't drive like you stand at SUV
they drove like a car
yeah correct
so I think
I remember seeing a lot of people
in some more affluent areas
having them when they were new
and I had a customer come in
and he had just given it to his son
but the dad was like
he had some really nice stuff
and he's like this has been my daddy for the last
15 years I've owned the car
I bought a new best car
I've ever had
and this guy's got Porsches and stuff
and the fact that he was saying in the Territory turbo
was a bit
kind of surprising
he was like I'm giving it to my son
I'm with you on that one David Prince
what about you Ed?
I think the buyer would definitely be a bias
towards a male buyer
I think
out of suburban
somewhat cashed up
any type
it may have been
the partner that drove
the car but
I feel like it was the husband who chose
the car
David Prince is on the money
he probably had a history
with Fords
and
you're not getting someone jumping over from a hold
necessarily to that
it's probably a Ford history
and maybe wanted the XR6
but you can't fit the family
so hey this is a perfect thing
it's a bit of something for everyone
bit of a compromise
Shane from Wheelers Hill
that's who would have bought it
a cashed up electrician
Trady
aged 45 and up
yeah
or maybe a bit younger
aged maybe 38
spot on
so Scotty would you agree with that
there that does have a personable one
yeah I was thinking
I can't picture a business person
in one
no yuppie would be in it
it would be mainly towards you
it cashed up
Trady probably
as you said it could be
I could easily see
a family
a dad that's just all of a sudden
figured out that his wife has got twins
on the way
he looks outside and goes
the XR6 turbo has to go
yeah
and makes that beautiful compromise
because of a sudden he sees on TV
the Territory Turbo ad
do you guys remember that
that was a great ad it was like eating sports
cast for breakfast
that was a great ad
imagine a mileage on those things
that would have been fantastic
that guzzle like you wouldn't believe
yeah they weren't exactly fuel efficient
Rob
that's what Turbo Terry says
absolutely
but again he puts his foot down a lot in it
does it make a difference
put a jet ski on it and it's even worse
didn't that come with a jet ski
on the back
that's right they did
standard
standard accessory
jet ski at the back
I want to add to that I also think
they would have bought that
Territories in general were
bought by everybody
they were very popular when they were new
a lot of old couples bought them to tow their caravans
and things
but they always bought
your base TX or TS
in terms of the turbo
specific model I think you guys are right
banging the money someone that had an XR6 turbo
had to upgrade
wanted to buy a car for the misses
they could drive on the weekend
I think that's a great choice
next one
who bought
a Veloster Turbo
single mum
single mum
they're quite
proxy I don't think single mums could afford a
Veloster Turbo
they were married
they were married
they got a payout
and they went I'm going to buy a sports car
and they got a Veloster Turbo
and it's really cool
because it's got three doors
it's like
a coupé bit of sports car
but it's still a hatch
it's still practical
it's really sporty
and no one knows what it is
and I really like that because I'm individual
and so the car needs to represent me
100% absolutely
there you go yes bang on again
no wonder why you sell cars
you know your target
and what's her name
Shane in the territory
Sally
and where does she hail from
in Melbourne
Kaiburg
from Kaiburg
he didn't even
we're just like Kaiburg
what colour did she buy
yellow
that's funny
the Veloster Turbo
it's an interesting car
because
I think it's a car
with a bit of an identity crisis one
but two it's not really a sports car
it's kind of like a warmish hatch
you know
it's not even a little hot hatch
in the grand scheme of things
but I think
the same buyer that bought that later
would have bought the Hyundai Tiburon before
that
you reckon Tiburon
they traded up to the Tiburon
now the Tiburon is before the Veloster
yeah that's what I mean
they traded up to the Vols
yeah yeah yeah
they really wanted like a
what was this
a Seleaker the last of the Seleakers
they really wanted a Seleaker
but then trading was appalling
on that
I went back to Hyundai and got a Veloster
I know a person that bought one brand new
and she
a Veloster Turbo brand new
she's a young professional
single
no kids
bought the dual clutch one
because she thought it was a bit of a sports car
and then that got ridden off recently
and now she's bought a new Kona
but the Veloster
now would you explain this
it's an ugly bucket of shit that no one should buy
besides that
it's
I just feel like it was a car that was made
for people that wanted
image over care
and
that car personifies that
and people who want an image
look at my fancy Veloster with
two doors on one side
they wanted to have that
that kind of impression
but it's not really a good car
they don't really do anything well
but in their defense
it was an interpretation
there are lots of other manufacturers
doing the same thing
absolutely
a package that was deemed sporty
but it wasn't particularly sporty
for me
I'm thinking of who they would have marketed it against
and like CRZ comes to mind
but then again CRZ was
a bit more techy in the form of like
hybrid
so I'm like well it wasn't going against that
the hot hatches at the time had moved on
so there was really
you know like your GTIs and stuff
were a bit more pricey
your Polo GTIs and stuff
were a bit more focused
so it kind of was in a
league of its own really
it was just kind of its own thing
but they sold tons of them
and
99.9% of times you see a woman driving
which I'm not stereotyping or anything
but it is the case
so Sally from Coburg
bought a bright yellow
Velociturbo
yep
so Edward and Rob are on board with that
we're in agreement
David and Scotty you agree?
I can't say no to that
I would have thought the name
might have ended in Ian
like you know
Aileen
Rayleen
but I'll go with Sally
I'm happy to
and the only other thing I'd say is
red, no yellow
I would have said black
oh black okay
alright who's next Matt
what's the next car?
the next one is what I've just bought
who bought a Camry V6 one then
and in my eyes I think they were all old people
I think the president
of the bowling club would have bought one
correct
wanted the Cressida
in a dream scenario
but just no need for the size
you know this is basically all the features
of the Cressida in a bit shrunken down
and a bit more modern
oh not necessarily near sorry
no 89 was
89 was a new Cressida
which was real that was beautiful
glamorous machine but they would
have just gone which just don't need the size
of it so let's how about we go
the V6 Camry
and it's fully imported you know they would have
they would have banged on to their neighbors about it
being fully imported whereas the other ones are made here
yeah that's right
the fully imported Japanese one that's the better one
but like
still to like I remember
this years ago when I was a kid my dad was trying to
get insurance for I remember this phone call like it was yesterday
and he's like I don't know what it is
it's just this V6 but I think it's an Ultima
because it's got all the Ultima stuff
and the lady on
Amy who was speaking
she's like I don't know what it is you have to bring the car down
so we had to drive the car down to their
head office in
it was you know
pressing at the time
and they didn't even know what it was they come out with that
with that you know they're
they're book of cars yeah
and they're clipboards and
they're looking at it they're like
yeah we don't know what this is like it was
it was the weirdest thing I remember sitting in the car
it was a bit of a family housing we all went in
we all went in
but seriously that glasses guy back there didn't have it logged
but they
so alright so
you're the president of your bowls club
who's retirement
didn't want the size of the crusader
doing pretty well for themselves
but wanted
wanted people to think they were being sensible with their money
but went for the expensive one
because most people wouldn't have known
that's right and you know wanted to buy
Australian made maybe
support the industry even though this one's imported
but yeah
so it was a bit for
look's sake you know like you wanted to look on the down low
but he wasn't prepared to forego that
I sort of extra features
and the
control on the cruise control on the power windows
yes yes
totally opposite
every sales rep and their man had
a camera back in those days
yeah but not this one
not your top of the line V6
no no this is the top of the line V6
this wasn't a sales reps car
no the base can be
made here sales reps car absolutely
well yes
but not the V6 to Dan
right
Rob were you working at Toyota at that time
I was working at Toyota at the time
do you remember when they were new
I do
I remember going out in the company cars
on Friday night doing a few skids
and these were the guys
in the office too
they're the ones who got all the cars
they're the ones who brought all the cars home all the time
did you only ever drive
the plane jainers you know the four cylinders
yeah pretty much
what was made here
yeah so stuff that we used to
drive they used to give out to the
the managers and
their cars within the plant
yeah
cause that's the thing you know these things never went near the plant
you know they came in and
went to deals and sold and
they seemed that many like they would have been pricey
and they wouldn't have
like we said week I think they're 31 grand
I think new
just over 10 grand more than a base model camera
than a base yeah it's a lot
it's another third of the car again
to get the V6
so I'd love to know how many
they ended up selling here but I don't think it'd be
that many
I don't think so either
yeah definitely someone
that was the owner of a bowling club
um
and
you know you'd see on the back
parcel shelf will be these hats
and a box of tissues will be there too
absolutely
that's what I can picture
Frank Sinatra and Billy Holiday
tapes maybe in the console
yeah definitely
saying you know I remember eight tracks
but you know
Martin
yeah
luxuries
so went for the top of the range
and you don't need three litres so they went
2.5 litres
because three litres is too much
for a car
and it's ridiculous
but you still want a bit of overtaking power
when you're on the freeway
you get your V6
but here's the question
Mitsubishi sold a crap ton more veritas
of similar era
early 90s
which was pretty much a similar size
but they always marketed
that car towards you know the professionals
in their suits and things
but every time I saw one being driven it was by
an old couple as well
do you reckon that was the same demographic
for that car
I think Verada
had more of a
I think Verada had a younger demographic
Verada was a bit more edgy in the styling
and a bit more contemporary
because you didn't have veritas
well you didn't have them in 89
it was still only magna
and it was magna elite was as high
as high as you went
so Verada only came in with the next shape
in like 91 I think
and
it was Verada 92
yeah late 91
92 yeah that's right
91 I was there I remember
and the
I think it was just such
a really cool modern swoopy
you know
what's the word I want
you know a sinuous design or something
the little SV 21
Camry with a V6 slept in it
was pretty boxy and old and conservative
that had come out in 87
and so
you know this is 5 years newer
or 4 or 5 years newer
and
Verada was sort of a bigger wider
more luxurious car so I think
I think it appealed to younger people
it would have been real conservative buyers
buying that Camry
versus a Verada buyer
but I think too
the Mitsubishi they were
like more shop keeps
like Commodore and Falcon
the size of them, the relative size of them
which is what spawned the wide-bodied Camry
but in 89
you know
there was no wide-bodied Camry
there was no Verada
you're in those smaller
sort of more petite cars
and I think
if anyone was looking at a popular line
Magna Elite versus your Camry V6 Matt
the size
of the Magna, the interior space of the Magna
maybe would have won over a younger
demographic the Camry
is probably bought by people who didn't
mind the narrow body or the
slightly less legroom and stuff you know
I want to add to that
I'd say so David
I'd say hence the older demographic
hence it left home
and we didn't need
we came out of a
Mazda 626
from
83
Kingswood
Kingswood
89 Kingswood buyers were still
buying Commodore, they're in a VN
VN Termina
I think they had a Kingswood from new
their kids have had kids in there
I'm with you Robyn
I think that's a good point
but I want to say that the Magna
or Verada always had a cool
factor in comparison to a Camry
Camry's never been called like ever
which is
I hate to say but it's true
a bit daggy
yeah so
I think that's where the Verada
and the Verada always looked
good
you know like a first gen
I didn't face a Verada
they were a good looking car
they still are quite handsome
you know
it's whereas a Camry
you know
what did the Magna V6 have
like a different front and rear
bars
and a lip
and some badging
otherwise you wouldn't really be able to tell
so I guess they did try to differentiate them
a little bit more
the last one for this evening before we get to the car quiz
is
who bought
a
Holden Monaro
the remake Holden Monaro in
2001
well that's easy
you reckon?
it was your
massive cashed up Bogan's
they were frothing over that
as soon as that came out
they were
quickly sold all their SS's
and got rid of those
and like I've got strength to a Monaro
it was your FIFO workers
yeah people
hands on
it was your other
your other collectors
that liked
I guess your little bit older demographic
that
collected
social editions of cars
and things and when they saw that kind of Monaro
jumped on it
it was your ones that probably
reminiscing when they might have had one
when they were younger as well
you know could have had the HQ
HK whatever it might have been
back then
yeah and kind of saw
new Monaro bang jumped on it
so I feel like it's more than one demographic
that jumped on it
now remember this was a world car too
yeah so this got sold in the UK
and it got sold in America
it was a
hideously
Chevrolet or Pontiac over there
it was a Pontiac in
the United States of Freedom
and it was a Voxel
in the UK
and
but I think in each of those demographics there were all different buyers
so like I don't think in America
you know it was sold to
like a redneck over there
like our equivalent
to Alberg and I think they were more marketed
towards you know a bit more of a driver's
car because like
at the time America could go through the American stuff
it's a great driver's car
yeah and that's
but
I remember reading a thing
it was Bob Lutz
he tried to bring it over there and there was a big catastrophe
about bringing it over there
and
and it wasn't
a big seller it wasn't a great seller
but in the UK
it was marketed as like a cheaper version
of a M3
or something a lot more power
for a lot less money
so yeah
I don't think it did well
I don't think it did well
in England and America
because I know America didn't like it
because it was under the
Pontiac GTO name
and
they didn't want a bar of it
and then
it was Vauxhall VXR
and I think
the Vauxhall name
isn't that great over there
and they're all kind of
I guess European
snobs
yeah
which it would be because I mean
the prices over there
aren't that bad compared to here
for what they can get
and they just stuck with their
M3s and things like that
then going for a Vauxhall
because of the name
a mate of
my son-in-law's daughter
who looks over there, G'day Sean if you're listening
hi Sean
he loves his VXR
alright okay he's got one over there
yeah he loves it
it'd be like
nothing else on the road there really
because they didn't really have anything else that was similar
I remember Topki used to love them
and they used to rave about them over there
yeah they do
and they're like well would you buy anything else
when you can buy this for a quarter of the price
it does everything those can do but better
so yeah
they always got a good rap over there
but they were never a big seller
in my memory of when who bought them
when they were new was
because I remember
I graduated primary school
the first year they came out I believe
and
one of the graduation cousins
was a bright yellow
Manaro and the guy that got out of it
was a full gym junkie
tatted up but like you know like full tanned
you know what I'm talking about
the ones that
have moved into AMG's now
the ones that are at the moon
absolutely in AMG's now
yeah
he sold his
he's no longer a part of that fraternity
but he just tatted anyway
that's another story
and yeah
I remember standing next to him
looking up at the guy and the guy was like
400 feet tall and I'm like oh my god
and he got out of it and he had to like
hunch out to get out of the car and he was just standing there
with his arms to the side like this
so they were kind of
that's the person that bought that car
as
as my memory would serve me but
anyone else for that one or that
or we're moving on to
that color was called yellow devil
very
British Leyland also had a 70's color
called yellow devil
there you go, everything old is new again
mm-hmm
I've got one more which we can do real quick
who bought
to the five people that actually bought one in Australia
the first gen Honda Insight
I can answer that, no one
that is correct, they really struggled
right
they actually loaned a lot of them out
to um
to councils and stuff to
you know to trial hybrid vehicles
because it was the first hybrid that went on sale in Australia
mm-hmm
well it was like a week or two weeks or something
it was like it was like some
be the prayers by a couple of weeks
but the um but yeah they
they sold so few of them
because they were in next hour about $55,000
only a manual
and a two seater
really and a hybrid
technology people weren't familiar with
so very niche market
very niche
so I think in total they sold 47
I think I had this discussion
with someone the other day who has two
and he's one
and I actually contacted
Honda Australia my contact there and said you know what
I know you're not into buying cars
but it would be remiss of me not to
let you know
this has come up for sale because
you've actually used it in marketing
uh and with your push on
hybrids now you know like with
they talk about how you did it
in 2000 and whatever
correct correct good story
they were very they
thanked me profusely and said
we will discuss this and get back to you
so
um so well okay so
they sold 43 of them or whatever
was 44 of them
they sold a lot more in Japan and America
they were quite popular in America
and for me they were like
the people that bought them were like
well I don't think they were your celebrity types
because they all ended up in Priests
like your Brad Pitt's and Angelina Jolie's
they all ended up in Priests
but I just couldn't picture
who actually forked out the money to buy
to buy one
because like
you know the hippies did
went went always for a Priests
like like no no
I can't picture who actually
and I don't know what he bought them but like who actually would have bought
well in America I think
the people that bought them were
I think hippies is
a good example
people who were environmentally
minded because it was a hybrid
they looked like nothing else on the road
except a Citroen
friend of the show David Day's got one
he always gets people saying
oh is that a Citroen? No it's not a Citroen
because
it's because of the spats, it's because of the wheels
that's right
and you know it had more
the passing resemblance to a CRX
if you squinted you know
there was that sort of
thing about them but one of the
biggest the most popular
renovations of them in America
is putting a K20 in them
quite an industry putting it
two-liter K series engine in them
but they go very well with that
because they're all aluminium they're actually
good on the same production line and in the same factory
as the NSX
I think he would have bought
that new would be
Nigel from Fitzroy
he's an engineer
but in a very niche
sort of form of engineering
he was coming out
of something maybe
like a first gen prelude with the
lucky dash or something
and tipped himself into
an insight because it really was advanced
in a way that a lot of other cars weren't
and Nigel's single
collects clocks
and restores
spare time
and the Honda insight was his vehicle
of choice because it's good for getting off the back
laneway into his Fitzroy garage
he's living
in the house that his mum
used to live in
and he's done a minor extension on the back
of that
and he engineered it all himself of course
what about you Scotty
that's just brilliant
no siding with Ed I love it
I do Lee engineer
do you want to know what Chad GBT says for this
I typed in
who bought a first gen Honda insight
the first gen Honda insight sold from
1996 was a very unusual car
so buyers were a pretty specific group
early adopters of technology
who are people excited
by the idea of driving the first modern hybrid
eco-conscious drivers
engineers and thinkers so you're on the money there
hahahaha
engineers and thinkers
communities
bought it as a purely cheap to run
commuter car especially with those long high driver
he's spending 55 grand to get it
oh I've grand like it's cheap to bloody run
and collectors and enthusiasts
because it was a quirky two-seat hatchback
it wasn't a mainstream success
you don't say
Honda only sold about
about 17,000 of them in the US
17,000
17,000 in the US
so
I don't think there was many like how many markets
did it get sold in David was it us
Japan
they were sold in the UK
not a lot I don't think
the whole thing of parts back up
and all that sort of thing would have been pretty extraordinary
actually having said that
I'm pretty sure I've seen left hand drive
ones in like
France
Germany Netherlands those sort of places
where they're like quirky things
yeah
yeah
would you agree Rob?
I agree
I agree
so engineer names
what was his name?
Roger
Detroit North
inherited the house from his mom
did a renovation, engineered it himself
and he tells everybody
he engineered it himself too
and now he used to work for an engineering firm
but now he lectures in engineering
a few days
at Melbourne Uni
hangs out with the academics
oh I've got it inside it's got an aluminium shut
it's the same production line as the NSX
he won't let you forget it
no partner will go near him
so it doesn't matter that it's a two seater
it's got room for him
and he's pet blue tongue lizard
interestingly
there's one at the museum
I'm broken Scotty
thank you
the blue tongue lizard
the blue tongue lizard got me
that's the best thing I've ever heard
yeah she's called Phoebe
when he was 30
not realising they lived quite so long
oh jeez
anyway
that's another good reddition of
who bought that new
let's get into the car quiz
gentlemen shall we? 10 questions
plus some bonus questions
we're going to continue on from last week
where we talked about songs from Carad
so you need to name
the car or I'll let you know
if it's just the brand or the car
and the brand for two points
alright so first one
car brand used the song
you get what you give
by the radicals
David
I'd be in trouble if I didn't get this
Mitsubishi
it was Mitsubishi correct
what's that song, how does that go?
1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4
don't look back
I've got the dreamers
that's the one
that was in another car company
he said
2000's
early 2000's
Black Evo 6 was in that add too
yeah, yeah
Paheros
and
when we have Mr. Reelsworth on
we will ask him to bring along
his acoustic version
of that song
that he composed
does he play that song?
he does it on the guitar
and it's amazing
does he sing the words to that song as well?
just an acoustic backing track
does he sing words about
Mitsubishi on it?
he may well have put words to it
by then
I've got the magnet disease
oh no
question 2
which car brand
and car
used the song by
a flow writer called Good Feeling
is this the low
rider?
no
the artist is called Flow Rider
how does it go?
how does it go?
well, sometimes I get a good feeling
I get a feeling that I never never never
yeah, that's the one
BMW
incorrect adverts
that's a great one
anyone else?
take a stab
the song and I can hear it
but I just can't remember
the car or the manufacturer
Scott? Rob?
nothing
alright, what is it Matt?
we're all failed
you guys got no idea?
we had a Corolla
really?
we had a Corolla, absolutely they did
Google, sometimes I get a good feeling
question 3
question 3
which car brand
had the song
and car
used the song Thunderstruck by AC DC
think about it
it's in the name of Scott
Scott was in there first
Jesus, two options
I'm stuck on
I am going to go with the
was it the Ford U?
incorrect
David? David?
with the
Holden Commodore U
was it the Holden Commodore U?
that was my two options
I should have gone with the other one
there was a Thunder version
yes, yes
because Marlou is actually aboriginal
it means Thunderstorm or something
as opposed to Barlu
who was the bear from the jungle
question 4
which car brand
had the song I See You Baby
by Groove Armada
Ed
I see you baby
shaking that ass
is it Renault with that horrible McGahn?
they had that in
Europe but not in Australia
oh come on that's a point
I'll give you a point Edward
but I'm off to an Australian one
last week is this adding to it
do you think the background
soundtrack or?
need the soundtrack
I think I should have learned my lesson
everybody out?
first Ford Fiesta
we got in Australia
it was the
engineers
I remember that
question 5
what car brand
which currently is on sale
and the car is currently on sale
has the song Baby I Got You On My Mind
by Powderfinger
baby I got you
on my mind
great song
dunno
the media marketing is great isn't it
guys I mean it's ridiculous
no idea
okay Ed I'll take your guess Ford Ranger
absolutely
wow maybe it
did sink in somewhere when I watched
the program
next one
is the last one for the music questions
for the evening
I think we're going to make a lot of people happy
which car brand had the song
I like the way you move
by the body rockers
is that BMW
it was BMW they did
I was there in that era I think
like the way you move
that's a good song
alright score check David on 3
Ed on 4
anyone's game
question number 6
the new Civic Type R
is sold out
they've finished their allotments
you can't even go on their website to get it
but they did
announce a price increase
what is it now available at
I'll do close to
I'll do close to
I'll pay that
I'll go 80k
80 grand says David Prince
I'll go
84 990
84 990 says
so Scottie
81 9
81 9 says Rob
87 6
that's a big jump
87 600
$79,000
David is closest to
quick question on the Type R
you had the first of the new
Type R's which is
that was 72
that was like 5 years ago or something
in 2023 they came out
no it was longer ago than that
2022 they were
released but in Australia we got them in 2023
David that Type R
that I borrowed from you for the day and it was raining
and I drove around whatever whatever
the press car thing
was that only 3 years ago 22
or 23
that was the older model that was an FK8
I mean that shape it's still that hatching
oh yeah yeah
how much were they
no no I mean that was the first
of those hatchy Type R shape things
no that was towards
the run of the end of that FK8
the FL-5 is the current one which came out in
2003 but the update
has just been released that's what Matty's talking about
23
okay
so when you say the words
Honda Civic Type R
and you say four door hatch
like the big body four door hatch
thing that shape when did that
come out
16
similar
and then they've just done an update
of that as we said
and that's all sold out that's what you're saying
they've done a new model
in 2023
new model yeah yeah you shape
that form
update is just sold out
the update is just sold out
but it is an ongoing model like they'll bring in more of them
or is that
I don't think so but it's
they like to keep the
exclusivity around them
but yeah I'm sure if you
waived enough money at them I'm sure you
yeah it's not like the model stopped it's just
it's all about supply
I mean they are in demand because
they're one of the few performance cars you can now
buy with a manual gearbox
yeah true
actually they're
in demand
my mum was thrilled when she heard about the price like
no I wouldn't have
especially with
probably she could make a profit on
yeah well
Honda did try to buy it back from her
that when she went for a deal
like should I get you into a CRV
she's like I don't want to see her
we have he
she was actually really annoyed
I see an RV
she's like I want to type out
I want to see her be similar
they tried to get her into a CRV
I can't tell that story
question number
7 according to
the Australian Bureau of Statistics
this has just come out recently
they say a car is
pinched in Australia every how many
minutes Ed? 4
4 minutes as Ed is
I'll give closest to but it's
so hang on let me give you one second Scott
7
7 minutes as Scotty
3 minutes
and David
I'll say 4.5
4.5 the answer is 11 minutes
Scotty gets the chocolates there
Scotty's on the board
anyone fold
question number 8
according to
sorry which model in the
Honda line up has been
outsold by Ferrari
David
the Honda Accord
that is the Honda Accord
that is a sad sad thought
considering
where that car was
wow
not that long ago
not that long ago
when you price the car
out of the market that's what happens
people stop buying sedans
because they wanted SUVs
or did people only buy SUVs
because there's no sedans for sale anymore
I think Rob's on the money
yeah price down the market
why would you buy that
and I really like the new Accord
but the Hyundai Sonata
for so much cheaper
it offers a lot more
and it's way cheaper
why would you do it
question number 9
Uber is offering
discounts of up to 15%
on which brands
this is new cars
so if you got an
Uber like gold or platinum
you're eligible for up to 15%
off
I'm not blocking a car
they're four brands
they're four brands
and there is a point for each Rob
Polestar
Polestar is incorrect
I'd like you thinking though
but it isn't correct
no
I don't understand
so they're offering on new cars
15% off
so Uber don't sell cars
they've got a
they've done a deal with this brand
so if I go
and it doesn't make sense
so if I go to say one of these brands
let's just say one was Polestar
so I rock up to Polestar to buy a Polestar
and I mention what code word Uber
and I get a discount
like how does this work
I think you gotta go to their portal maybe
to their portal
on buying a Polestar through Uber
do they have a membership
so you gotta have like Uber membership
I don't even know dude
I'm not an Uber driver but like I think
the more you've done with them
the better your discount is
it sounds like if you're an Uber driver
and you want to get a deal
on a Polestar you can put through Uber
and get a deal with that one
okay I'll shut up now
alright so who was in next
so Polestar was in
David was next
incorrect
Ed
I will say
Toyota Camry Hybrid
that's what I thought it would be
but no it is complete
wow
I will say Cherry
Cherry is incorrect you're all back in
for one more guess each
Val is incorrect
what was that David
Tesla
Rob
Geely is incorrect Scotty
obviously a car company
that wants people to use them as Uber
but they're currently not using
they're quite desperate at this point
they're very desperate all still aren't
a screw probably Jeep
Nissan
incorrect I like your thinking
no it is
VW, Audi, Kupra
and Skoda
these drivers are gonna go broke
no good
you can't tell me
any bloody Uber driver is gonna be like
give me a new
Passat to be an Uber driver
it won't last about 5 minutes
they'll stick with their hybrid Camrys
doesn't matter if they've done
3, 4, 500 it doesn't matter
I was in an Uber
too long ago
it was a
Toyota
it was an import
it was a Prius
it was a Toyota
a plug-in hybrid Prius
from Japan
it had done
580,000 km
to be fair the car was mounted
and it smelled like absolute
ass but
but
he's like the battery is perfect
it drove really well
I'm like yep I can see why
they're becoming an Uber's favourite
that's funny that discount
thing on the Vag Group
will not work because they will take premium
and let it as well
I mean
why would you put yourself in a petrol
car that's not hugely
economical with the runs on premium
no good
you're not gonna go and pick up a Kupra
no
but anyway
last question
MG
it's bringing you to Australia in 2026
because everybody is at this point
what is it called
I
saw this today someone was showing me this
bloody thing this morning it's got tail lights
on the rear that look like a passenger car
does
is it something ex-U7 or something
no it's like a mantra
or something like that
incorrect
Scottie and David
I don't know I haven't seen anything
so enthralling the
that's just so dull
it is you're all out
it's called the U9
the U9
why
how about I'll change that to the Uron
yeah
Lamborghini Urus
MG
now a Uron
and that Alfa
Maya what's that
toenail
and that's
your car quiz gents
I'm looking at the interior
and like the shifter that they've got
for it
is it very phallically
objected
no it's kind of
you got to grip it like this
it's all down on it
yeah it's almost kind of like a
throttle
oh the size of it
the size of it David
the size of it
the size of it
you'd never get it down the driveway
hey Rob
I think you fend your replacement for your transit mate
oh no
I'll get the shark before I get the U9
I don't mind the shark
not going round Australia in the bloody shark Rob
I'm going in a shark
you can go in a shark but not
round Australia not going touring in a shark
I can plug in the fridge
use my induction stove
you won't be able to move
what it's a rolling generator
it is quite literally a rolling generator
it's all it is
he's a rolling generator
I'm with you
I'm seeing sharks everywhere too
yeah but they just want to be builders
who drive around with a laptop
and don't actually do anything with it
well it's exactly what
ranger up the drivers are
exactly the same drivers ranger up that's fine
but Rob is talking about going around the country
you know being self-sufficient that's not your car
why not
you need a nice
turbo diesel
with a caravan on the back
no caravan just a rooftop tent
that's it mate 380
380 is what's where it's at
I love a rooftop tent but it's tight up there Rob
it's not you know
the wife won't like it but you know
this is going to be cramped up there
it's fine for me you know
Debbie will be like I'll sleep in the tunnel
caravan where you can sit and play cards at the table
can't feel the seats in the 380
come on like that's not the month
the 380
one
score check gentlemen
put a towbar on the 380 and tow a little 5 grand caravan
it's perfect
I think it's got a towbar on it
I think it does
this story is writing itself
it's on gas too
even better
so nothing can get gas in the country but
the way you can get it you can do a bit of gas
absolutely
they're cracking a 380
with a little blight weight pop top on the back
you can get those little A-vans
they're up
they're about 10 grand
this is a cheap way to get around Australia
I'm with you
it's being 780 on these
behemoth vans you can't park
you're unreliable or all european
no good
380 SCC rooftop tent
in the way van
is that where you can play UNO
scrabble with a wife
fantastic
many hours of fun
well what do you think you're going to do in the van
it's the same thing
yeah alright
I can't take the push bikes
and tow the motorbike and all that sort of stuff
I'm just going to throw it out there and just say
dodge ram
TRX
I might win that
there's your answer
and that comes with a caravan 2 to TRX
happy days
happy days Rob
score check from the quiz
Rob didn't get the score tonight Rob
Scotty on 1
Edward on 4
and tonight's winner on a grand title of 5 is Mr David Prince
well done
well done
some interesting
trivia and
now you know that powder finger
back on the screens with the Ford Ranger
so there you go that's a
it's a wonderful world
and that the
Ferrari as a brand has outsold the
chord
when I saw that today I blew my mind
I was like what the hell how does that even
happen
changing automotive landscape
yes let's just say that
certainly is
I think that's a podcast
thank you mate yep yep
thank you
let's do some plugs
Rob's doing it
he's firefighting electrical neighbour heating
380 restoring
camping
Ford paint punching on with
Ranger driving
what else have you been doing recently Rob
the neighbours moving out across Australia
hopefully they have a 3 we'll move out and I'll be right
yeah that's it 100%
you're getting rid of them Rob I like it
you
absolutely
imagine being in a
street
I can see it now
I can see it now
that would be
sick
hop over to borrow a cup of
sugar and maybe an 18mm
you know high tensile socket
absolutely
hoist
hoist there
can I borrow your hoist
can I bring it over
I can eat
I can eat
please
right a iconic store
out in the street no one's going to complain
we will be happily
letting you put that car on the street
you walk out to your car and it's got
all this over spray on it and you are
Rob's being angry
what's that midline
on your car
he's painting
something there fella
oh there's another fire
he's been welding
another LTD
on fire it's alright
we'll be out
street so we'll just block it off
100%
it'll be a good Christmas party too
imagine the block parties we could have
imagine
winning the block you know the one that you know
flip on where all the house
yeah yeah do that
I can see it now
David Prince's Wisdom
or
do I want you to die
but on all the others we're not
that is true
yeah good one like it
live your life
I heard one recently which I've heard before
but it resonated with me I liked it
life is not a dress rehearsal
it isn't a practice run
if you want to do it do it
it's a bit of Ed Wisdom
it is
it is
anything you guys want to plug
Honda CRV
seem to be for sale low case
your mate didn't want
oh he's thinking about it which means no
low case
sorry low case
low case if you ignore the first digit
yeah
it's a half thousand
cracker
yeah not bad
what are you after for that Edward
three and a half
yeah it's fair
but with road we're still in December
timing belt just done
alright
belts just done radiator
just done
what did you think about that Mazda 6MPS
I
had a look at that
I quite liked it
I thought true you could bring that back
but then as per the question I asked
what's a cracker worth are they
12 are they 13
are they 9
it's so hard because
there's not that many
pop up and
and it's done 200k which is not
crazy case but it's still something
if it had done 140
or something a bit more
you might be able to ask 12,990 for that
and maybe it's worth doing
if it's only an 8 or 9 grand
or a 10 grand
it's like oh you're getting tight
not much enough to flip it
yeah I get you
that BMW that I
sent to graze the little 320i
I lost money on that I lost like four or five hundred dollars on it
anyway
it went to someone and sure enough the next day
popped up on facebook
marketplace for four and a half
and then it was four two and now it's three
eight I saved it it's going down by the day
good luck with that
good luck with that
I did
I think it was about 320
you think it will get down to 320
is that what you said David
I don't think we heard about the 320
oh it was just a little
a white 320i
it's down to three eight now
you know
the E90 shape
2006 it's
the one that I sold to
my work colleague five years ago
so I ended up buying it back
but it's a bit more bashed around now
and I just sort of cleaned it and sent it to graze
because there were just too many things
ironically it drove really well
like the motor and the trans and the aircon
it was actually a very good driving car
and as it was when I had it
but I sold it to him with 90 on it
it's now done 158
but just you know
it had a bit of a life
it's a sort of a shame
with a few weekends on it
and fix the bumper and put a new interior
mirror and do this and give it a service
and you know it still drives so well
but they're just worth nothing
those early 90s now
they're really sort of
four to five grand cars
so
as I said I lost money on it at graze
so
what do you do
got his golf tip of the week
so
without having trouble hitting the golf ball
don't picture it as
a circle
picture it as just a
like a flat object
because it's easier when you think about it as a flat object
when you're coming down to hit it
so kind of like
picture it as like a rock
or a piece of wood or something
and just don't think about
all those thoughts
of your YouTube clips that you watched of how to swing
just think about
hitting it
and most of the time you're probably not going to miss
like that one Scotty it's a good one
see those thoughts
see you like a beach ball mate
just teeing off
