Thirty Years of Two Stroke Travel - Catherine Germillac

Catherine Germillac has been riding the same motorcycle for going on 30 years, a small 2-stroke Yamaha DTMX 125. As a young woman, setting out on a solo motorcycle wasn't a common thing to do in the late 1980's. But being inspired by Ted Simon's Jupiter's Travels, she fell in love with the idea of motorcycling, travel and adventure, purchased her beloved motorcycle, that she calls Desiree, took some lessons and then started riding. She spent 6 years travelling on her bike, taking some time out in Colombia and Ecuador, before continuing her journey to Australia. In this episode, the memories and experiences that Catherine shares about that extended trip really make you understand the essence of her character, feisty, strong, fun and determined. Good Adventure Company - JJ Lewis Mexico’s Copper Canyon Epic Adventure (March 4-11 2017)  "Good-ADV’s mission is to provide a personal adventure experience for all our riders and, in doing so, use those funds for significant, financial support for sustainable life-changing projects benefitting kids and families throughout the US and the world.  We are currently supporting the children in the schools within The Copper Canyon and when you come on our trips, you’ll see the projects and meet the children firsthand." www.good-adv.com Music: www.audionautix.com Show Sponsors: Support the show sponsors that help bring ADVENTURE RIDER RADIO to you. Water Bars, Broken Bones & Rescue | Spencer James Conway in South America

When an Afternoon Ride Turns in to a Rescue Mission This is the story of a rescue made possible by a satellite communicator, an inReach device. We've used the inReach for some time now, but only have experience with it as a convenient method of staying in contact with family and for checking weather in remote locations. When we were putting together this episode, part of the plan was to talk to someone who had to use their inReach for the purpose of rescue. And while searching for someone with a story, we experienced a rescue mission of our own.  Jim Martin, show host, and his friend Brent Henry, went for an afternoon adventure ride, on the logging roads and trails on our island. That ride turned out to involve a serious injury and the subsequent rescue mission. About inReach: We talked at length about both the inReach and Spot on a previous episode, Calling From Help from Above.  inReach Canada: www.inreachcanada.comDelorme inReach: http://www.inreachdelorme.com/ Spencer James Conway - Circumnavigating South America Spencer was the first solo rider to circumnavigate Africa, totally unsupported. He documented his trip using a video camera and at the time had no idea that it would be made in to a six part series called African Motorcycle Diaries where it first aired on the UK Travel Channel. And now, Spencer is riding around South America, documenting his trip on video, which will once again be made in to a series on the Travel Channel. Jim caught up with him on his trip to see how things were playing out. Lifelong Obsession with Motorcycles & North America Travel - Lance Gines

Lance Gines has been riding motorcycles for about 44 years. Growing up on a farm in Idaho in the United States, he got his first dirt bike when he was 6 years old. Lance taught himself to ride in the horse area where his dad would train horses. Their farm was on the edge of BLM land (public) and two miles from the Snake River Canyon. He gained experience riding in the desert and in the canyon, which led him to buy his first street bike at the age of 14. And that's when Lance went on his first road trip with his father to Montana, Washington and Oregon. Having a passion for riding since a young age, Lance has raised his kids with motorcycles. He's lucky to have a wife who is as obsessed as he is with riding and he still goes on motorcycle adventures with his dad regularly.  Lance Gines is the author of Into the Horizon - A Lifelong Obsession with Motorcycles - Vol. 1, and is now working on Vol. 2. Many of the stories in the book are about the unique friendship he has with his father and the motorcycle trips they have done together.  He's also the owner of Into the Horizon Adventure Motorcycle Tours. Darien Gap - No Through Road | Dylan Wickrama BMW Moto Raft

Dylan Wickrama Between 2010 and 2013, Dylan Wickrama was on a world trip on his motorcycle. He left with no plans and he had a tight budget. On his trip he covered 210,000 km and road through 80 countries, starting in Switzerland and ending in Argentina. His RTW trip wasn’t about speed, distance or setting records, but it was about exploring the world, meeting people and discovering places. After 3 years on the road, he reached the Darien Gap in Panama. Considering his options, Dylan came up with a plan to get around the Darien Gap to continue his trip. And that plan involved water, his motorcycle, some oil drums and bamboo poles. Dylan wrote a book about his adventure called When the Road Ends. It’s available on his website and on Amazon. Website: http://www.ride2xplore.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ride2xplore/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/samarawickrama05 Darien Gap - Jungles, Snakes & Geurillas Where is the DARIEN GAP? The Darien Gap is also know as the DARIEN ISTHMUS, an isthmus being a narrow strip of land connecting two larger areas with water on either side. You will find the Darien Gap on the Pan American Highway, nown as the “longest motorable road in the world” in the Guiness Book of Records, a popular route for many motorcyclists. The Pan American Highway can be as long as 48,000 km depending what route you choose to take through Canada and the US, with the most popular routes averaging about 30,000 km. Adventurers often start in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and end in Ushuaia, Argentina, or the reverse. There is no official route in Canada or the United States, but all Interstate Highways in the US have been declared as part of the Pan American Highway. The official Pan American Highway spans from Laredo, Mexico to Buenos Aires in Argentina. Between Panama and Colombia, on the border of Central and South America, you come to the Darien Gap,  just over 160 km (99 miles) long and about 50 km (31 miles) wide of jungle, mountains, swamps and rivers. The only sensible options are to go over it by plane or around it by ship A Few Basic Facts About Darien Gap: There are no roads, only foot paths or trails, no street signs. Exotic wildlife abounds, the likes of which most of have never known, such as jaguars, wild boars and venomous snakes. It's hot, muggy, the forest is thick and the mosquitos atrocious. Dangers are everywhere, there are risks of encountering drug smugglers, poachers, guerrillas and paramilitaries in the Darien Gap, which is also a refuge for murderous outlaws. The Darien Gap is home to indigenous peoples known as the Embera-Wounaan and the Kuna. Why Not Build a Road? In 1971 and 1992 efforts were made to allow a road to be put through the Darien Gap, but both were stopped due to environmental concerns, of which there are many. There is evidence that the Gap has prevented diseased cattle, which cause foot and mouth disease, from spreading in to Central and North America. The indigenous people are concerned that a road may destroy their cultures.  There is the threat of making the Darien Gap more accessible for drug trafficking and the resulting violence. And there is also the need to protect the rainforest. The Darien Gap has been said to be a natural barrier which protects North America.  Crossing the Gap For centuries, the Darien Gap has been a destination and challenge for many explorers and adventurers, and the exploration of it has usually been met with disaster. However, there have been many successful attempts at crossing through the Darien Gap, by two wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles, rocons, motorcycles, bicycles and by foot. There have been several notable “first of it’s kind” crossings. The first successful crossing in a vehicle was in 1960 in a Land Rover and Jeep. An arduous journey moving an average of only 200 metres or about 650 feet in an hour. It took them nearly 5 months to cross the Gap, as they made their way through the jungle clearing the bush by hand, crossing streams and rivers, making bridges as they went.  The first crossing in a two wheel drive vehicle was in 1961, by a team using three Chevrolet Corvairs, which took 109 days. They completed the expedition having abandoned one of the cars. Between 1971 and 1973, the first fully overland crossing was by Ian Hibell by bicycle. In 1975, Robert L. Webb made the first motorcycle crossing. Between 1985 and 1987, the first vehicle crossing by land only was made in a Jeep by Loren Upton and Patty Mercier in 741 days, they would return in 1995 to cross the Darien Gap again, this time on Rocons. Since then there have been more notable crossings made by motorcycle, on foot or by river boats. To this day, any inland routes remain extremely dangerous. For example, National Geographic Adventure contributing editor Robert Young Pelton and two American backpackers were kidnapped there in 2003 and held for 10 days. In an National Geographic Adventure interview by Nicole Davis, Robert Young Pelton had this to say: "The Darien Gap is one of the last—not only unexplored—but one of the last places people really hesitate to venture to... It's also one of the most rugged places.” and “It's an absolute pristine jungle but it's got some nasty sections with thorns, wasps, snakes, thieves, criminals, you name it. Everything that's bad for you is in there." A Couple of Options for Crossing the Darien Gap by Motorcycle FLYING PANAMA TO COLUMBIA - cargo shipping is available with Air Cargo Pack (www.aircargopack.com) - there are details on their website about shipping the motorcycle and what the required paperwork is - cargo shipping is also available with Servicarga (www.servicarga.com.pa) - you will have to arrange a flight for yourself from Panama to Bogota with Avianca (www.avianca.com), Copa Airlines (www.copaair.com) or Viva Colombia (www.vivacolombia.co) - return ticket required - Colombian law STAHLRATTE (www.stahlratte.org) - often talked about in motorcycling circles - built in 1903 in Holland, the SV STahlratte, a sailing ship, is not a commercial vessel, it is owned by a foundation which was set up in 1984 as a commune - the purpose of the Stahlratte is as a “traveling platform for group life/experience" - it is a non profit venture supported by volunteers - it's a 4 day trip around the Darien Gap, bikes are dropped off the night before the voyage and bike are retrieved the day after arrival - includes food and beverages, one night hotel before the journey and a bed on board - more information at www.stahlratte.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/prices-discription-pana-carta-biker.pdf Horizons Unlimited - www.horizonsunlimited.com Horizons Unlimited’s forums have good information where some adventurers have taken cheaper routes, shipping the bikes in containers and then meeting up with the bikes through a kaleidoscope of boats and buses. Although cheaper to go this route, it also takes longer and requires some good bit of organization. You need to check your sources out carefully though, as there are some stories of robbery, problems with customs when using smaller boats, etc. Music: www.audionautix.com ARR is Brought to You By: Max BMW Motorcycles Shop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Ordering parts and accessories has never been easier. Notes From the Road Vol. IV - Derek Mansfield & Motorcycle Chains

Derek Mansfield - Notes From the Road Vol. IV This book arrived, quite unexpectedly in our mail box a few months ago. We pondered the paper wrapping and wax seal and thought of what it might be. On opening, we discovered Derek Mansfield’s book, Notes From the Road Vol. IV. It’s a unique book about a journey across west, central and eastern Europe, describing the details and experiences in those places where Derek travelled, and not just the place itself. Derek’s use of words and descriptions are like the thoughts that run through our heads, but we never utter. And when you read them, you are exactly where he wants you to be. http://derekmansfield.com/derek-mansfield-s-notes-from-the-road-vol-iv/ Motorcycle Chains Mike Hager from Regina USA and Robert Palmer from D.I.D Chain discuss with Jim Martin, ARR host, the technicalities of motorcycle chains. Some of the topics they cover are what do the numbers mean and what’s the difference between an o-ring chain and x-ring chain. Lisa & Simon Thomas - Motorcycle Adventurers - Beyond the Point of No Return?

This isn't a story about a long road trip, it's about living on the road. Lisa and Simon don't think about the end of the road, or plan for a flight home, because the road is their home. They usually sleep in a tent, they cook outside, and they wouldn't have it any other way. And after 13 years of living off their bikes, with nature as their kitchen and bedroom back drop, there are no plans to settle down, at least not yet and who knows if ever? Lisa and Simon are seasoned travellers, they are truly pioneers of the adventure motorcycling industry. When they started riding, social media was non existent, there was no twitter, youtube or facebook. If people were riding around the world, they were doing it at a time when you probably had to learn from books, or by talking to other riders or travellers. Information on motorcycle adventure travel wasn't as prevalent on the internet in 2003 as it is now. The Thomas' have paved the way for many motorcyclists looking for inspiration or role models. Their knowledge and experience speaks volumes, whether its about connecting with people, fitting in with different cultures, making a living on the road, or cooking a great meal, and they have some great tips and advice for anyone planning or already on their trip, be it solo or as a couple.  Watch for the book Dirty Dining, An Adventurers Cookbook by Lisa Thomas - coming soon! The Adventure Trio Returns - Terry, Sandy & Jack Borden

There's a saying that it isn't what you do in life that you will regret, it's what you don't do.  With that thought in mind, the Borden family made a decision to go on a motorcycle adventure as a family. And once they made the decision, they knew there was no turning back. A trip with the scope of the one they chose to do can be a scary thing, what with having to leave your home, friends, extended family, jobs and everything you know that has become the norm. And then there are the fear mongers, instilling in us all the bad and negative things that 'could' happen to us while we explore new territories. And the people who care for us that will worry while we're gone. And on the other end of the scale are those who encourage us, tell us it's the best thing we will ever do, that there is so much to do and experience in the world, and that it will change our lives forever. In 2014, the Bordens left on their adventure, and they spent 15 months travelling through Mexico, Central and South America. Terry, Sandy and Jack share their experiences and stories which inspire and reassure us that this kind of trip will influence you incredibly, change your life and the way you think, for the better. The Bike or Not the Bike? That is the Question There are so many different options on the market when it comes to purchasing an adventure motorcycle, something suitable for everyone or any adventure, but when it comes to choosing the best bike for you, there are a lot of things to consider.  To get some advice on the things you should be looking at or thinking about while you're at the dealer or perusing the used ads, we went to a few experts in the motorcycle riding field to get their opinions on how to choose your next adventure bike. And while there is no definitive answer for any rider, they had some great tips to help make the best choice for you and for the intended use. Motorcycle Riding Dogs & Is It the End of the 650 Single Cylinder?

Only a Rider Knows Why a Dog Sticks His Head Out of a Car Window   Who doesn’t love their furry friend going everywhere with them? You take them in your vehicle, on hikes, for walks, they sleep in your bed (don’t deny it), and for many, they are simply one of your best friends, even like family.  But, what if you aren’t taking the four wheeled transport, what if you are riding your bike to the store or on a trip? If you love your bike and you love your dog, there are options for bringing them both along for the ride. There are dog carriers, goggles and helmets available to keep your dog safer on a bike. Even a custom kevlar motorcycle suit made by seamstress, Aileen Toynton in the UK. And for the bigger pooch, you can invest in a sidecar to give them more space. There’s no doubt, that traveling with a dog does have it’s challenges and rewards, and there are some sacrifices to be made along the way as well. We talked to Stuart and Janell Clarke who have been riding with their dogs on the back of their bikes for over two years and to Ara Gureghian who has had his best friend, Spirit travelling beside him in his sidecar for over ten years. And these riders wouldn’t have it any other way. Their friends riding with them, feeling the wind in their fur… er, hair… and if you asked the dogs, we’re sure they would say it beats sticking their head out of a car window any day! Stuart & Janell Clarke - The Pack Track Stuart and Janell Clarke have been travelling for two and a half years with their dogs through 23 different countries. Starting out in Sydney, Australia in 2014, they say that travelling with the dogs has made their adventure unique, creating some lasting memories. Stuart and Janell have some great tips about crossing borders, accommodation, the paperwork involved, dog care while on the road and more. It’s not as difficult as you might think! They’ve also designed their own dog carrier for the back of a motorcycle called the Pillion Pooch.  Twitter: thepacktrack Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Thepacktrack Website: www.thepacktrack.comYoutube Channel: www.youtube.com/user/ThePackTrack  Ara Gureghian & Spirit - The Oasis of My Soul Spirit has been riding in Ara Gureghian’s sidecar for over 10 years. They’ve travelled all over the United States and in to Canada. It’s become a way of life for them as they move from place to place, living on the road most of the time. Ara and his companion, Spirit are in sync with the way they live and Ara has got to know his friend very well. So, he has some resplendent insight in to extended travel by motorcycle with dogs. She was contacted by a motorcyclist who wanted to take his dog along in a sidecar, but wanted the dog to be as safe as possible. And after sourcing out the kevlar and figuring out how to work with the heavy material, Aileen came up with a one piece kevlar suit that protects dogs while riding. Aileen takes orders from all over the world, so be sure to contact her with your dog measurements and keep the pooch safer! Zac Kurylyk, motojournalist for Canada Moto guide, has a theory that the 650 thumpers or large single cylinder adventure bikes are on the verge of disappearing from the manufacturers lineups, which could explain the lack of updates from these aging dualsport platforms. He wrote an article called ‘The End of the Big Thump’ which supports this thesis. Jim Martin contacted Zac to discuss the possibilities of the 650 single cylinder dual sports going extinct. Two Wheeled Nomad - Lisa Morris and Jason Spafford & Royal Enfield Motorcycles

Two Wheeled Nomad / Royal Enfield Two years ago we had Lisa Morris and Jason Spafford, Two Wheeled Nomad, on ARR. At the time Lisa was a newbie to riding, and the trip was just in the beginning stages. Recently, Jim talked with Lisa and Jason about what they've been up to as they plan the next leg of their adventure. Where are they headed to and is there any end in sight to their moto adventure? And on the heels of the grand opening of the Royal Enfield North America headquarters and first flagship showroom opening, Jim had the opportunity to discuss the future of the Royal Enfield motorcycle with Siddartha Lal, CEO of Royal Enfield and Rod Copes, President of Royal Enfield North America. Will an adventure bike be coming to North America? Two Wheeled Nomad - Lisa Morris & Jason Spafford Two years on the road, and still going strong, Lisa and Jason talk about their adventures and future plans. Lisa is a travel writer and Jason is an adventure photographer, both freelancing on the road to help keep up their nomadic lifestyle. Elspeth Beard - First British Woman to Motorcycle Around the World

In 1982, twenty-four year old Elspeth Beard decided to set out on a round the world trip on her motorcycle. Having finished up three years of architectural studies, and with some changes in her personal life, she saved up about £1000 and then shipped her 1974 BMW R60/6 to New York where she began her journey. Elspeth regals and inspires us with some stories of her experiences and misadventures as she travelled 55,000 km until she returned to the United Kingdom in 1984, becoming the first English woman to ride a motorcycle around the world. With lessons learned from coping with everything from dysentary to stolen valuables, Elspeth proved herself a brave woman who will let nothing stop her from achieving whatever she wants. http://www.elspethbeardarchitects.com/projects/munsteadwatertower.html Adventure Rider Radio is Brought to You By: Max BMW Motorcycles Shop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Ordering parts and accessories has never been easier. Motorcycle Books - Resource, Preparation and Entertainment & California Lane Splitting Made Legal - Will it Pave the Way?

Between 1440 and 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. But, history shows that printing has been around long before Gutenberg's invention. As early as 220, the Chinese were block printing, putting ink on wooden blocks and pressing them on cloth and then hundreds of years later, on paper. Before the press was invented, Europeans either painstakingly copied written word by hand or used a method similar to the Chinese block printing called Xylography. Both were laborious and time consuming, and because of this, book choices were limited and costly. But, it was Gutenberg who facilitated books being mass produced throughout Europe at a fraction of the cost.  So, it's with thanks to Gutenberg that we have so many books available to us to learn or to immerse ourselves in for pleasure. Authors can take us on adventures, to the places they have been, describing the sights, sounds and smells in such vivid detail that we feel we are there, experiencing it for ourselves. We also read inspirational books that teach us to appreciate life, to feel good and get the most out of it we can. And books that teach us about things, show us how-to or teach us some much needed skills. For going on to 2000 years, humans have been reading the written word. We are so fortunate to have books easily available to us, to keep a book on the shelf to read over and over again or to refer to when we need to know something. There's something special about holding a book in your hand and turning the page. Or, the next best thing, for those of us limited in space, or travelling, or just trying to keep costs down, are downloadable eBooks. Or if you are tight for time, you can listen to someone read a book on CD or download it to hear it.  And, of course, since motorcycles are our passion and yours, we have been lucky to have some fantastic authors on our show and have compiled a list of some of these authors. But, there are many, many authors out there who we haven't had on the show, who have written valuable, informative or just plain entertaining books. Peruse your local book store, or check out some authors websites. Pick a book, or two, and put up your feet and take a trip to South America, India, Africa, Europe or wherever your heart desires, plan a motorcycle adventure, or learn a thing or two about riding or repairs. A Dream to Ride the World | Rider Skills: When the Going Gets Stuck

Anna Grechishkina left Kiev, Ukraine in July, 2013 to follow her dreams of a trip around the world. Having fallen in love with motorcycling in 2005 when she got her license through the arduous Ukrainian licensing system, she started to take trips that were weeks to a few months long to different countries with friends. It seemed logical to morph in to a longer trip, perhaps a year or two riding around the world. And on this episode of Rider Skills, how to get out of sand or mud when your bike gets buried or you get stuck in a rut. What tools, techniques and methods can you employ to get unstuck? Holding Your Water - Motorcycle Adventure Liquid Storage: Oil, Water & Fuel

Water weighs in at  8.34 pounds per US Gallon or by the litre its .7 kg or 1.6 pounds, and humans need on average of 2.2 - 3 litres of water per day. When we are packing for a motorcycle adventure, water and fuel are often left to the end to be fitted into whatever space remains, but considering the weight and bulk of liquids, not to mention the challenge of leakproof containers, perhaps it should be our first consideration. And now that you have all that bulk and weight in water you still may need extra fuel storage. Fuel weighs less than water but still ranks high on your list of consumables for weight.  So what do you do about all this weight and bulk of the extra water and fuel on your bike without making it feel like your riding an overloaded scooter? Motorcycle Riders from Diverse Cultures with Common Grounds - Madagascar Adventure with July Behl & Innovative Soft Luggage System with Adam Owens

July Behl - Madagascar Adventure July Behl, was one of the six finalists for the United People of Adventure project organized by Touratech, with their initiative being to unite riders from different continents, cultures and speaking different languages, through their love of adventure motorcycling and travel.  July found riding in Madagascar incredibly exciting, experiencing "gnarly roads to deep sand, broken bridges to unforgiving ruts, extreme heat to torrential rain, mad foreigners to slightly confused locals". He connected with his fellow riders saying "the people, everyone and I mean everyone was just brilliant - helpful, kind, considerate and always there for each other". It's a trip he won't ever forget, and would do again in a heartbeat.  Facebook: July Behl https://www.facebook.com/rishi.rr.3 Herbert & Ramona Schwartz - United People of Adventure  Herbert and Ramona Schwartz from Touratech brought these motorcyclists together for the experience of a lifetime in Madagascar. Feel the Rhythm, Feel the Ride - Daniel Rintz, Scooter Tramp Scotty, Michelle Hope, Ian Coates, Ara Gureghian

Not for all people, but quite often for many of us, when we leave on a trip, be it a few weeks, months or a year or more, we face emotional and financial hurdles. First we spend time planning, and we reach a point where we have crossed all our t’s and dotted all our i’s. We know exactly how things are going to go, where we will be and how much money we need, or so we think. Once on the road, some of us may feel homesick, or lost. We get lonely, financially strapped, worried or unsure about how this trip will pan out. These hurdles, if you persevere, are usually overcome as you fall in to a rhythm. And soon the road becomes your home, you meet new people and experience new cultures. You can find work on the road in different locations, or be self employed, writing articles, blogging or making films. Once you find your niche, your comfort zone is expanded and you begin to thrive. As you know from the many extended travel riders we have interviewed in the past, there are those who find they have a need to return home at the end of a trip and some who don’t want to go back to a traditional life at all. Scooter Tramp Scotty and Michelle Hope are great examples of true living on the road. Finding work wherever they go, connecting with old friends and making new ones. And then are those who leave for a year and don’t come back home for 14 years. Ian Coates had wanderlust, travelling at a very slow pace. He just couldn’t bring himself to return home until he was good and ready. And some go for a while, then return home for a time, and hit the road again as soon as they can. They may have work or other obligations, health concerns or they just may feel the need to spend time with family before tasting freedom again. Ara Geureghian and Spirit spend most of their time on the road, returning home for different reasons, always with the intention of getting on the road again as soon as possible. Daniel Rintz and his partner Josie, have just completed their riding adventure from Alaska to Argentina. When the trip was coming to an end, they realized they just couldn’t stop riding and go back to a regular lifestyle. They prefer to face Africa underfunded, figuring out the financial bits as they go rather than go back to normal life. For some, this is hard to fathom, for others, well, we either dream about it or do it.  We’ve had many opportunities to explore old cemeteries and something always seems to grab us when we do. When we look at the names and dates, the condition of the graves, we realize that one day it is inevitable, we will be forgotten. Our families and friends will remember us while they are still living, but as the years go by, pretty soon we are just a name on a gravestone with a birth and death date. If we won’t be remembered forever, then isn’t only right that we should live life to the fullest, throw caution to the wind and make memories for ourselves? Why let our fears or worries about travel and the unknown stop us? Take that trip or live the lifestyle that you have always wanted to. Be it on the road for 14 years, 14 months, or 14 days, just get in to the rhythm and travel. Experience life, escape the box. A Very Extended Motorcycle Trip | Rider Skills: How to Handle Your Bike When Not Moving

With their three sons grown and moved out, Petra and Anders felt what they called boredom, that loss we all feel when we’ve worked and lived to raise our families, and then being needed comes to an end. So they came up with a plan to ride their motorcycles around the world. A lot of riders struggle moving their bikes around, loading them on to trailers or vehicles, into hotel lobbies around their garages or even just parking them. On this episode of Rider Skills, we discuss the mechanics behind handling your bike in these situations. Mary McGee - Woman Motorcycle Legend & Brad Barker - Operation Ecuador

Mary McGee - Legendary Motorcycle Racer Mary McGee is truly an inspirational rider, who has paved the way for many women competitors and riders alike. She started out racing cars in the 1950’s and then got in to motorcycle road racing, enduro, motocross and finally vintage racing in the 2000’s. She started racing long before it was acceptable for women, racing against men simply because there weren’t any women’s classes in racing. And when Mary received the FIM Woman Legend in 2012, she finally decided to get her street riding license, and signed up for a basic motorcycle riding class!Mary turns 80 years old this year, and when you hear her voice in this interview, she just doesn’t sound like your average octogenarian. She’s witty, spry and just sounds way younger than her years. It must be motorcycling that keeps her young, and if that’s the case, then we should all be doing it. Bravo Mary! You are one of our greatest mentors!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mary.mcgee.3745?ref=br_rs Brad Barker - Operation Ecuador Brad is the producer of The Ride of My Life videos and website, with the goal of discovering the good stuff, exploring and riding to different places in the world, and to impact lives in a positive way.In April 2016, the people of Ecuador were struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and are still in desperate need of aid. Brad went down to Ecuador and helped a local motorcycle club distribute some supplies to the victims. Brad Barker is planning Operation Ecuador, and is gathering donations of money and supplies to deliver to Ecuador. In partnership with RawHyde, the Coalition of Hope Foundation and the local Ecuador motorcycle club, the Brosters, he is taking a relief shipment down when the containers are full. They are seeking financial and good donations, as well as asking for help to unload and distribute goods.
