Texas-Tested: 2025 Ram 1500 Hits the (Back) Road
Driving the heavily revised 2025 Ram 1500 brought on a strange sensation. Instead of giving a sense of raw muscle, it offered the sophistication of an uptown limousine. In fact, we’d bet that most limousines don’t ride as well or offer as much stretch-out room as the Ram 1500 Crew Cabs. For 2025, Ram is offering a new line-topping Tungsten model, and it has goosed up the already strong credentials of the former Ram top dog, the Limited. Host Jack Nerad just returned from a trip to Austin, Texas, after driving both. He got the rare opportunity to sample the new, much-talked-about 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder Hurricane High Output engine that replaces the fabled Hemi V8 under Ram’s powerful hood. And he got the chance to partake of the Ram 1500’s velvety ride quality, the product of its adaptive air suspension. On top of that was the Ram 1500’s technology with the headline-creating Uconnect5 system and a 14.5-inch multi-function touchscreen. Nerad will tell us more in this episode. Also, in this episode, Co-Host Chris Teague will detail his findings after a weeklong midwinter test of the 2024 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport. The Ridgeline has always been an idiosyncratic truck. Now it is available in a new form that stresses off-road capabilities. Can it live up to its looks? Teague will have the answers. It’s been an exciting week in the car industry. It looks as if the Environmental Protection Agency is finally willing to listen to reason and relax its stringent fuel economy and electric vehicle mandates. Those regulations faced heavy opposition from just about everyone who knew anything about the car industry. We’ll have the details for you. Meanwhile, there is more trouble on the self-driving vehicle front. Autonomous vehicle testing in San Francisco has faced a great deal of public resistance, and the recent firebombing of a self-driving car is just the latest example. In a related development, General Motors’ embattled Cruise self-driving unit has lost another key executive in a blood-letting after one of its self-driving test cars dragged a pedestrian down the street last year. We’ll have more on both stories. In happier news, Mazda has announced that it will continue to develop one of its longtime signature engines. We’ll have the details on that later in this segment. This week, our special guest is Andrew Staley, brand manager of the Ford Explorer. Ford has a heavily revised version of the Explorer on the way for 2025, and Host Jack Nerad had a chance to get all the important details from him in their discussion at the Chicago Auto Show. 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country: Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow
The 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country isn’t a startling new development. It doesn’t feature a groundbreaking engine or stunning piece of safety equipment. But in a month when snow, ice, and other inclement weather can occur almost anywhere, it is a very nice old friend to have around. In this episode of America on the Road, Host, Jack Nerad roadtests the V90 Cross Country in most of the weather conditions that February in Southern California can throw at a vehicle — including a blinding snowstorm. How did the hearty Swedish station wagon fare? He will have his report coming up. Our guest co-host this week is veteran author and auto journalist Matt DeLorenzo, who is subbing for Chris Teague. Matt is the author of How To Buy An Affordable Electric Car: A Tightwad’s Guide to EV Ownership and a car expert par excellence. An always affable co-host, he will reveal his take on the 2024 Mazda CX-90 three-row sport utility vehicle. Its predecessor, the CX-9, had great road presence and a premium look, but the knock on it was it was too small. Does the CX-90 suffer the same twist of fate? DeLorenzo will have the answer. 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63: Driving the Hottest 3-Row Around
For the 2024 model year, Mercedes-AMG is upgrading the performance-oriented GLS 63 three-row SUV by adding to its generous list of standard equipment. If you think a performance-oriented three-row SUV is sort of a silly idea, well, you probably haven’t driven a GLS 63. But co-host Chris Teague has, and he reports on all the details of his weeklong stint in the flagship of the AMG SUV family. The 2024 GLS 63 gets new appearance items inside and out — a new rear light signature and a Nappa leather-cover instrument panel among the new features. It also has been endowed with a newly standard panoramic sliding sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, adaptive high-beam headlights, selectable AMG Performance exhaust system, Burmester surround sound system, 360-degree surround view system and blind spot assist. Of course, the heart of the GLS 63 is under the hood, where lies the handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine that produces 603 horsepower. For use in the big SUV, it has been systematically electrified with a 48-volt auxiliary on-board electrical system and integrated starter generator. The result of this mild-hybrid system is even smoother and more powerful drivability. Chris Teague will tell you the rest in this episode. While Teague was testing the $150,000+ AMG GLS 63, Host Jack Nerad was behind the wheel of the 2024 Mazda Mazda 3 Turbo. While it seems the co-host got the best of it, Nerad found there was nothing shabby about the performance or equipment of the $36,000 Mazda3. In an ocean of compact cars, the hatchback stands out for its premium looks, exquisite interior, and fun-to-drive persona. No, its 256 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel-drive give it a verve that few compacts can match. And we’ll have other thoughts coming up in this episode. In this week’s news segment, Stellantis, the owners of the Jeep, RAM Truck, Dodge, and Chrysler brands, is trying to stave off rumors that it will merge with France-based Renault. We’ll tell you more about that and its implications coming up. Ford is facing disruptions to the product of its F-150 and F-150 Lightning pickup trucks, which could cost you if you’re seeking a new Ford truck. And while Toyota has not been bullish about electric vehicles, it has just announced a giant new EV production facility to be based in Kentucky. We’ll have more on both stories. 2024 Acura TLX Type S: Sports Sedan or Luxury Sedan?
Acura says the TLX Type S is the quickest, best-handling all-wheel-drive sedan in its history. But can it provide its unique brand of performance in the midst of a brutal Maine winter? That’s what Co-Host Chris Teague set out to find this past week as he road-tested the car. Certainly the 2024 version of the Type S has the specs to get the job done. It features improved throttle response in the Sport+ drive mode from its turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. Incorporating tech derived from the twin-turbo NSX, the engine generates 355 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. For the 2024 model year, the TLX Type S gets additional features, including a 10.5-inch head-up display and surround-view camera system. Teague will offer his opinions in this episode. In the other half of the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad will evaluate and report on a car that is in some ways very similar to the Acura TLX and, in other ways, its polar opposite. The 2024 Lexus ES 300h is about the same size and competes in the same segment as the Acura. But in its Ultra Luxury form, it makes no attempt to accentuate sportiness and instead doubles down on luxury. The 300h combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor in a full-hybrid system. Its total horsepower output is 215, which pales in comparison to the horsepower of the TLX Type S. But that isn’t the point. With its electric torque, the ES 300h is much peppier than its rating would suggest. And it has plenty of acceleration for the type of cruising it is expected to do. Its goal is total comfort plus uncommon fuel economy, and Nerad will tell you if it succeeds. In the news, the slowdown in the growth of electric vehicles is causing many auto executives around the world to do more than just wring their hands and shrug it off. It’s having serious economic effects across the globe, and we’ll tell you what it could mean to your household coming up. More positive news: Honda is making wireless AppleCarPlay and wireless Android Auto available to more than half a million owners of older Honda models, and we’ll have the details. If you have the right car, wireless functionality could be yours for just $150 or so. You might not yet have noticed, but the auto industry is trying to kill AM radio. Several brands have already dropped AM tuners from their audio systems, and others are threatening to do so. But now an unusual coalition of lawmakers, talk-show hosts, and Luddites is fighting to save it. And if banning AM radio isn’t enough, a proposed new California law would put speed governors on every new vehicle sold in the somewhat tarnished Golden State. We’ll have more on that revolting development and our comments coming up. This week our special guest is Mike Spagnola, President and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association. 2024 Toyota GR Corolla Takes on Wilds of Maine
America on the Road’s Co-Host Chris Teague finally went and did it — he bought himself a brand-new 2024 Toyota GR Corolla. Not only that, but he took delivery of his hot, new ride right in the midst of a miserable Maine winter. Now the question is, does the 300-horsepower, all-wheel-drive car live up to his high expectations for it? And how is it standing up to the difficult weather conditions January in Maine is throwing at it? We’ll have the answers to those questions and more in this episode. While Teague was putting his new ride through its paces, Host Jack Nerad had the opportunity to wring out the 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Meridian Edition. The Meridian Edition is the most off-road-oriented of the CX-5- crossover models. It offers a blown engine that belts out in excess of 250 horsepower, and it’s equipped with a very trick all-wheel-drive system. Mazda is well-known for its excellent on-road suspensions and top-notch handling. But what kind of capabilities does the CX-50 have off the pavement? We’ll offer our opinions. Beyond the road tests, there is plenty of fascinating automotive news this week. According to an exclusive report from Reuters, Tesla is planning an all-new $25,000 car to be introduced in the middle of next year. The Texas-based carmaker is lining up suppliers for what promises to be its lowest-priced offering ever. We’ll have details on that startling development and our thoughts as well. In other news this week, that electric vehicle thing isn’t going as well at Ford Motor Company. Its conventionally powered SUVs and trucks are selling so well that the carmaker is bringing in a third crew to meet the demand for the Bronco and Ranger. But at the same time, it is cutting production of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck in light of slower-than-expected sales. And finally, an auto executive has the guts to say what so many are thinking these days. Despite all the hype and buzz around the inevitability of electrification, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda predicts EVs will only reach 30% market share and level off there. We’ll have more of his comments and our reaction coming up. We also have additional thoughts from Toyota for you this week. Czech Please: Praga Bohema 700-Hp Hypercar Starts Production
It’s not every car company that also builds light tanks and a variety of aircraft, but Praga, the Prague-based company founded in 1907, is one such automaker. Having survived the perils of two world wars, Communist occupation, and the topsy-turvy market of the late 20th Century, Praga is poised to enter a new era with the initial production of the company’s Praga Bohema road-legal hypercar in a dedicated facility in the Czech Republic. The stunning Bohema will be hand-built in very low numbers over the next four years. One of its calling cards is its incredible lightness of being. At less than 2,200 pounds, it offers one horsepower for every 3.14 pounds. Its 700 horsepower is impressive enough, even in this age of 1,000-horsepower electric cars, but that weight-to-power should result in a startlingly fast road car with remarkable handling. Praga says it “could well be the last all-new petrol-powered hypercar.” The $1.5 million all-carbon aero-driven two-seater built by Czech craftsmen is bound to pique hypercar collectors’ interest. In other news this week, Volkswagen is celebrating 75 years in the American market, and we’ll give you some of the highlights along the way and talk about the prospects for Volkswagen in the United States going forward. The Beetle first landed here for sale in 1949, and that began an incredible saga that continued in roller-coaster fashion to the present day. In other news, the Dubai Police have taken delivery of a very unlikely new police cruiser and added it to their fleet this week. We’ll tell you what it is and how it all happened coming up. In the road test segment, guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo will tell us all about the exciting Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. If a hybrid Corvette sounds just too weird to you, be assured that it isn’t. This super-powerful supercar competitor is a steal at its $100K+ price, and we’ll tell you why. Also in the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad evaluated the 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz small pickup on one of his frequent trips to the Palm Springs area. While a small pickup might not seem like the best choice for travel with his youngest daughter and wonderful wife, the Santa Cruz turned out to be more like a sports sedan with a huge trunk than a truck. Its 281-horsepower turbomotor got the party started, but it wasn’t the whole story. We’ll have the details. Exclusive Interview: Karma President Marques McCammon on 1,100-hp Karma Kaveya
This week, our special guest on America on the Road is Marques McCammon, President of Karma Automotive. Karma is a California-based builder of high-performance electric vehicles whose very interesting plans include the imminent launch of the 1,100-horsepower Kaveya super coupe. Host Jack Nerad conducted an exclusive interview with the company’s energetic chief exec, and they discussed the details of the Kaveya plus McCammon’s plans to differentiate the American supercar brand from others in the space. The Karma Kaveya certainly appears to be worthy of further scrutiny. Its luscious super-coupe body equipped with butterfly doors is stuffed with four electric motors enabling four-wheel-drive. A 536-horsepower, rear-drive version of the car will be available by the end of 2025. The full-on 1,200-horsepower AWD version will arrive by the conclusion of 2026. As we first reported last week, Hyundai has announced a bold plan to remake virtually everything and change life as we know it during its press turn at CES. While that might seem like an exaggeration, it’s really not. And we’ll give you the startling details later in this segment. In somewhat less Earth-shattering news, Dodge has announced a new limited edition of its Durango SUV as it begins the phase-out of the HEMI V8. (Say it ain’t so, Joe.) Honda wowed CES with some all-new electric vehicle concepts, as we’ll have details on those. And not to be outdone, Hyundai also introduced a flying car at CES. We’ll bring you the details and our reactions. In our road tests this week, Nerad had the opportunity to put the Ford Bronco Raptor to the test in blizzard conditions in the Midwest. Venturing far from his more weather-friendly home base, AOTR’s host reacquainted himself with winter driving techniques at the wheel of the 418-horsepower twin-turbo V-6-equipped Bronco Raptor. At the same time, Co-host Chris Teague put the 2024 Mazda Mazda3 Turbo to the test, battling his own challenging weather conditions in New England. He discovered the 250-horsepower version of Mazda’s compact car is a surprisingly good match for well-regarded hot hatches like the Volkswagen GTI.
