Hydrogen Trucks Through The Lens of a 9 Year Old

Jon Summers is the Motoring Historian. He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept sports bike rider. On his show he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, motoring travel. In this episode, Jon and his son Oliver delve into the world of hydrogen trucks during a visit to the Port of Oakland. They attend a presentation at a hydrogen fueling station, learning about the environmental benefits and challenges of hydrogen technology over traditional diesel and battery-electric trucks. Jon and Oliver explore the technical aspects of hydrogen refueling and compare Hyundai and Nikola trucks, discussing their design and potential in the trucking industry. The insights from various experts highlight the importance of hydrogen in achieving zero-emission goals. Jerry Reed - East Bound and Down J & Son attend the opening of the world’s first big rig hydrogen station, with associated government and electric truck razzamatazz The Press Conference and a digression on nomenclature What colour is “pickle”? An existential discussion The First Element dude The Carb Lady The Hyundai dude (with the waistcoat that rode up) A Good Question from the LA Times; how clean is the wrap around technology? Which “look like missiles”. “If California is to meet it’s zero emissions goal in 2046, hydrogen must be part of the solution” So how fully baked is this? J was less convinced after a drive around the Port of Oakland and chatting with real truckers O reviews the two trucks; Nikola seemed far more wholistic, next generational design, while the Hyundai felt more of the parts bin special it is. The game changer of one pedal driving; O feels he could drive it, J feels we are very close to autonomy The challenge is clearly around the delivery of hydrogen, not the trucks J feels soon the smell and noise of diesel will soon be like cigarette smoke in bars - recently gone, and already forgotten Rainbow - Man On The Silver Mountain ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/gtmotorsports Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/ Copyright Jon Summers, The Motoring Historian. How TV Changed Racing Forever: The Thrill, the Tragedy, and the Transformation

This episode of The Logbook, our History of Motorsports series, features freelance writer Preston Lerner discussing the impact of television on motorsport from 1964 to 1973. Drawing from Lerner's upcoming book 'The Deadliest Decade,' the talk highlights how early television broadcasts, notably ABC's Wide World of Sports, began covering automobile racing, significantly expanding its reach and attracting commercial sponsors. The presentation touches on key events and figures that shaped this era, the mixed reception from enthusiasts, and the controversial focus on accidents. It also notes the gradual improvements in safety prompted by these broadcasts. Lerner concludes by reflecting on the dual-edged nature of television's influence, emphasizing how it both popularized and commercialized the sport while inadvertently spotlighting its dangers. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 Meet Preston Lerner 00:54 Television's Early Days in Motorsports 03:32 ABC's Struggle and Strategy 05:35 The Rise of Wide World of Sports 09:01 Controversial Coverage and Safety Issues 17:10 The Impact of Television on Racing 21:29 Q&A and Closing Remarks ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: Visit Our Website Become a VIP at: Patreon Online Magazine: Gran Touring Follow us on Social: Instagram This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience.
