Ford APIM and Jeep WCM Adventure [E173] - Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z
Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech In this episode, Matt Fanslow dives into two detailed vehicle diagnostic and repair stories, highlighting the challenges and solutions involved in modern automotive repair. The episode is packed with technical insights, troubleshooting tips, and lessons learned from real-world scenarios.Key Topics Covered:2013 Ford Edge SYNC System Connectivity IssueProblem: Intermittent cell phone disconnection from the SYNC system.Diagnostic Process:No DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) found.Matt linked his phone to the system and tested it without issues.Discovered the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) had never been updated since the vehicle was manufactured.Challenges:Attempted to update the APIM using Ford’s FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System).Encountered issues with a USB driver link and access problems. After multiple attempts, the SYNC system displayed a black screen.Resolution:Successfully updated the APIM after performing a capacitive discharge (CD) and updating the Front Control Interface Module (FCIM).Verified the update through Ford’s SYNC website and Motorcraft service. The client confirmed the connectivity issues were resolved.Takeaway: Always verify software updates and be prepared for unexpected challenges during programming. Persistence and proper tools are key.2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wireless Control Module (WCM) ReplacementProblem: After replacing the WCM, the shop couldn’t add keys to the system.Diagnostic Process:The shop used an aftermarket scan tool and a dealer-provided PIN code to replace the WCM.Attempted to add keys but failed, suspecting the keys were locked.Matt suggested trying an aftermarket key, which was successfully added, making the vehicle drivable.Challenges:Discovered the PIN code provided by the dealer was incorrect. The Passive Entry Module (PEM) required a matching PIN code to share data with the WCM.The shop had to replace the WCM again with the correct PIN code.Resolution:Matt used an Xhorse tool to unlock and renew the original keys.Successfully added the original keys and performed a PEM replacement. The vehicle was fully functional.Takeaway: Accurate information (e.g., correct PIN codes) is critical for successful repairs. Proxy systems add complexity, and having the right tools (e.g., immobilizer tools) is essential.Key Lessons from the Episode:Importance of Software Updates:Outdated software can cause compatibility issues, especially with newer devices (e.g., iPhones).Always check for updates and follow proper procedures when programming modules.Challenges with Aftermarket Tools:Aftermarket tools can have limitations, especially with complex systems like proxy key systems.OEM tools and manufacturer resources are often necessary for advanced diagnostics and programming.Persistence and Problem-Solving:Complex issues may require multiple troubleshooting steps and collaboration with other professionals.Filing Service Improvement Requests (SIRs) and reaching out to dealers or manufacturers can help resolve persistent issues.Client Communication:Keeping clients informed throughout the diagnostic and repair process builds trust and ensures satisfaction.Action Items:Ford Edge:Verify the APIM update was...

He emphasizes that their deep technical knowledge and adept problem-solving abilities can significantly enhance the customer experience. Chris underscores the critical role of comprehensive training and mentorship programs in equipping technicians with the necessary communication and interpersonal skills required for their new roles. He acknowledges common concerns, such as the potential depletion of technical talent on the shop floor and the financial implications of such transitions. Aiming for Supermedium [E029] - Speak Up! Effective Communication
Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:In our episode today - Craig introduces listeners to a concept that has helped to shape his own journey, the concept of being “Supermedium.”This concept is related to fitness goals and how people often do not focus their goals on very specific objectives - which can lead to wasted effort and actually hinder you in many cases. The goal is to be strong enough—or said differently, have the right strength for a specific task. SUPERMEDIUM.There are a few references Craig brings into this conversation - one of which is from the book “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life,” by Arnold Schwarzenegger.Craig quotes a statement that Arnold makes on the importance of coming into strength training with a clear goal - and ties this to coming into communication training with a clear goal as well.(Craig also highly recommends that book by Arnold via audio book.)The link is here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1HR5D9S?ref_=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cp_ud_dp_KKT0YM7XDFW30C7FNNXM&skipTwisterOG=1&bestFormat=true&newOGT=1Just how does this apply to our communication goals? Craig often cites that “Toastmasters is his gym’ and that communication skills can atrophy just like any muscle in the body. Listen in to hear how him discuss some of his own fitness goals and overlays that with what he has seen as he journeys with others on their communication journey too. This episode will have you thinking about what it is you want to accomplish on your communication journey and should be encouraging for those who might feel a bit too self critical if they aren't achieving an ideal they have imagined.Watch Full Video EpisodeJoin Our Virtual Toastmasters Club: https://remarkableresults.biz/toastmastersToday’s Word of the Day:UntenableAdjSomething, such as a position, excuse, or situation, that is described as untenable cannot be defended against attack or criticism.Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:The Institute at WeAreTheInstitute.com. Future Proofing Your Shop: A 2025 Auto Repair Outlook [THA 419]
Thanks to our Partners, NAPA TRACS, and Today's Class The "Great Correction" refers to a shift in the industry after a period of relative ease, likely due to pandemic related factors. The key concerns include a decrease in online searches for auto repair, rising costs, increased competition from dealerships, labor shortages, rapid advancements in technology (EVs, ADAS, AI), and the need to explore new revenue opportunities like key services, ADAS calibration, tires, and truck repairs. These issues suggest that the strategies that worked in the past may no longer be effective. The Steps Before a Low Score [E028] - Speak Up! Effective Communication
Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:In this episode, Craig is concise as he reflects on the timeless wisdom of Martin Luther King Jr. and how his principles of nonviolent conflict resolution remain highly relevant today. Inspired by recent readings of King’s works, specifically his iconic Letter from Birmingham Jail, Craig explores how these lessons can be applied to resolving conflicts in everyday life—even in situations as modern as addressing negative reviews. This thoughtful discussion acknowledges the historical context of King’s writings while highlighting their enduring value in promoting understanding, negotiation, and meaningful resolution.Watch Full Video EpisodeKey Points Discussed:Craig’s Appreciation for MLK’s Legacy: Acknowledging King’s brilliance as a leader, communicator, and writer, Craig emphasizes the enduring relevance of his concepts and principles. The Four Steps of a Nonviolent Campaign (as outlined in Letter from Birmingham Jail):Collection of Facts: Ensure injustices are present and verified.Negotiation: Open dialogue with a willingness to find common ground.Self-Purification: Prepare yourself to act constructively and maintain the ability to return to negotiation.Direct Action: Take deliberate action aimed at fostering a return to negotiation. The Word of the Day:Unfettered.Adj - Not controlled by anyone or anything. UninhibitedModern Applications:Craig draws parallels between these steps and common missteps in conflict resolution today, such as skipping fact-gathering and jumping straight to retaliation—like leaving a low review without understanding the full story. He discusses how these missed steps can lead to escalation rather than resolution.Takeaways for Listeners:People care about how much you know only after they know how much you care.Applying MLK’s principles to situations like resolving a customer complaint or an unjust review can model constructive engagement and encourage others to seek facts, negotiation, and resolution. This episode is a thoughtful tribute to King’s enduring legacy and a practical guide for applying his lessons to resolve conflicts with empathy and integrity.Links & Resources:Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr.Join Craig as he unpacks these timeless lessons and their power to transform the way we approach conflicts in our personal and professional lives.Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:The Institute at WeAreTheInstitute.com. Because every great shop deserves marketing that’s just as great. In this episode of "The Weekly Blitz," Coach Chris Cotton from Auto Fix Auto Shop Coaching delves deeply into the critical topic of men's emotional health, shedding light on the often-overlooked societal pressures that inhibit emotional expression among men. Coach Cotton begins by exploring how traditional societal norms and expectations have historically dictated that men should be stoic and unemotional, leading many to suppress their feelings. This suppression, he explains, can result in emotional bottlenecks, where unresolved emotions accumulate and eventually manifest as stress, anxiety, or even depression. Coach Cotton highlights the unhealthy coping mechanisms that many men resort to as a consequence of this emotional suppression, such as substance abuse, aggression, or withdrawal from social interactions. He stresses the importance of recognizing these patterns and seeking healthier outlets for emotional expression. A significant portion of the discussion is dedicated to the necessity of building supportive networks. Coach Cotton underscores the value of having a community or a circle of friends and family who provide a safe space for men to express their emotions without judgment. He warns against the dangers of toxic relationships that can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy or reinforce harmful stereotypes about masculinity.Furthermore, Coach Cotton advocates for men to embrace vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness. He encourages men to open up about their struggles and emotions, which can lead to deeper connections and a more fulfilling life. Finding one's purpose is another key theme in the episode. Coach Cotton explains that having a sense of purpose can provide direction and motivation, helping men navigate life's challenges with resilience and optimism. Finally, he emphasizes the importance of celebrating small victories. By acknowledging and appreciating these achievements, men can build confidence and foster a healthier emotional landscape. This, in turn, contributes to both personal and professional success, as a balanced emotional state enhances decision-making, creativity, and interpersonal relationships.Overall, Coach Chris Cotton's insights offer a comprehensive guide for men seeking to...
