The Motorsport Brief: SVG answers your questions
It’s our first chance to talk to Shane van Gisbergen since his big switch from Supercars to NASCAR, and it’s clear he’s loving this new chapter immensely. Thank you to everyone who responded on social media to our call for questions, including those who put their best radio voices on and sent in audio. While we couldn’t get to all your questions in the time Trackhouse Racing kindly gave us, we covered most of the recurring themes. Shane provides great insights on how wild the cars feel on ovals, drifting and burnouts in a NASCAR, his potential plans for more Sprintcar racing, the advice he's received from legends on both sides of the pond, and whether he would consider an Indy 500 wildcard like Kyle Larson did this year. Although we didn’t discuss his now-trademark celebration of kicking a footy into the crowd, we love how SVG is bringing some Kiwi rugby roots to the United States and making his mark! The Motorsport Brief: Chaz Mostert on the Mic
What took us so long? Supercars star Chaz Mostert joins us for a Darwin debrief. Ricky Bobby had Shake n Bake, but Chaz pulled off the ‘Cheeseburger Chase’ at Hidden Valley, making a string of epic passes to turn a tough weekend around. We also look ahead to the next round at Townsville, discuss reuniting with Lee Holdsworth for the enduros, and get Chaz's thoughts on his fast and funny new teammate, Ryan Wood. But it's not all about Supercars. We delve into the wild modifications he's made to his first car (which he still has), his joy in fatherhood, racing in GT3, and owning a team in GT4. Plus, we check in on his #nosocialhate initiative, a reminder for all of us to play nice online. Craig Dack - Part 1
Four-time Mr. Motocross title winner Craig Dack was recently inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame, prompting Rusty to realise that a chat with ‘Dacka’ was long overdue. The result is an awesome episode, not just for Supercross and Motocross fans. From watching the legendary Stephen Gall (who is coming on the pod in the next few months) at Amaroo Park and trying to do monos like him on his BMX bike, to cutting laps on his first motorbike around the backyard on Christmas Day, there was no turning back from that moment. We reminisce about the catchphrase “Dack Attack” and the journalist who started it, how surreal it felt to race at famous venues in the United States, and how his success extended beyond bike racing. There was the time his physio shut down a plan to go riding with an AFL superstar, and how the Supercross Masters promoter was worried his headline act was injured in an aerobics TV show promo gone wrong. We also discuss a little-known plan by one of the greats of Australian Touring Car Racing that very nearly saw Craig switch to four wheels. Head to Rusty's Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and give us your feedback and let us know what you want to hear about on Rusty's Garage.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Craig Dack - Part 2
After winning numerous titles in Australia, conquering New Zealand, and proudly wearing the green and gold while racing overseas, Dacka decided to stop competing in the early '90s to start his own team. This venture has enjoyed just as much success and continues to thrive. Managing his own deals as a rider helped him navigate the corporate sponsorship landscape. The depth and strength of these relationships led CDR to celebrate a 30-year milestone with Yamaha in 2023. Decades-long partnerships like this are incredibly rare in the world of sport today. We also discuss his time working with a young and fiercely determined Chad Reed when he took on the US, developing people management skills for young riders with differing personalities, and the changes he's witnessed through the eras. Dack realized early on that he didn't want to turn them into carbon copies. Additionally, we touch on some special bikes he's kept along the way that bookend his riding career and his thoughts on the future. Rob Herridge - Part 1
The two-time Australian Rally Champion who grew up in a sporting family and thrives on competition! Rob Herridge's early life around the family farm in Western Australia served as his apprenticeship for what he now calls himself—a "pretend-gineer." Though he may lack a formal qualification, the resourcefulness and precision he learned were perfect skills for motorsport preparation. Herridge was a late bloomer to rallying but not to speed sports. You'll hear about how he blocked pain through sheer determination to beat a record in barefoot waterskiing before channeling that thirst for success into power boating. Additionally, he learned a brutal lesson from his uncle as a teenager on what it takes to win in his other pastime, clay target shooting! Rob Herridge - Part 2
Rob’s been a commentator over the years (can you tell?), and he loves a good story, so we're only just shifting into second gear in this chat! Discover how Herridge jumped into rallying on a whim, convinced he was world champion material on the very first transport stage! Learn about the Datsun 1600 that started it all, his near switch to Mitsubishi, and the ultimate move to Subaru, sparking a partnership that’s lasted for decades. We recorded this episode in the workshop, surrounded by cars Rob has worked on and won in. The attachment to some of them is understandable, especially when you hear the story of how Rob clinched his second Australian title before officially receiving the first. Despite a lengthy and draining court battle, he never gave up. Special thanks to Rob James and Adelaide Hawkins from Motorsport Australia, who assisted with this episode while filming a TV story for an upcoming round of the Australian Rally Championship. Rob Herridge - Part 3
Building Maximum Motorsport into a ‘go-to’ race and rally car preparation business with a Subaru focus. The emergence of his son Dean as a driver and how the pair form a Yin and Yang partnership at Maximum, which is now an authorized Subie Motorsport Parts Dealer. Creating gravel notes for legends like Colin McRae and Ari Vatanen in New Zealand and nearly destroying the pace notes in a photocopier! Winning an Australian title without a handbrake! Who needs a handbrake in rallying anyway? It’s just extra weight. How Safari competition in cleverly modified Forester and XV models has quenched his easing thirst for driving. Rob turned 70 just days before we recorded, so will he ever truly ease off the throttle? The Team Penske driver, one of the modern-day IndyCar greats, is showing no signs of slowing down—he hit 233mph at the Brickyard in the Fast 12! Although he narrowly missed out on pole position to his teammate Scott McLaughlin, he is more determined than ever to drink that winner’s milk again. What does he think of Kyle Larson’s chances?
