This is a Ferrari F355 Spider, an older Ferrari with a V8 and an open-top body style. The hosts are talking about how auction prices can be heavily influenced by how much work (repairs and interior/brake/suspension work) was done to the car.
An “engine out” job means the mechanic takes the engine out of the car. That lets them do big repairs more easily, but it’s expensive because it’s a lot of labor.
“Interior recondition” means fixing up the inside of the car so it looks and feels better. That can include redoing leather or other trim, which costs a lot.
Reupholstering means replacing the leather or fabric on the seats and interior. If it was changed to black leather, that can change the price because some buyers care a lot about the original look.
“Siri Fiorano” is a special Ferrari variant/option that collectors tend to value more. The hosts are basically saying that if a car has this, it can be worth more at auction even if it’s similar on paper.
The Audi R8 Spider is a supercar with the engine mounted in the middle and a convertible-style body. Here they’re saying it’s often overlooked, and they specifically mention a manual-transmission V8 version.
A “six speed manual” is a car where you shift gears yourself using a clutch pedal and a stick. Some drivers like it because it feels more connected and gives you more control.
The podcast mentions a Ferrari called “Luce,” but the clip doesn’t explain what it is. Without more context, it’s not possible to say what kind of Ferrari it is or what makes it different. If you share more of the segment, I can describe the exact car.
“Five-seat” means the car can seat five people. The hosts are pointing out that this Ferrari is trying to be more practical than a typical two-seat supercar.
“EV” means an electric car. Instead of using gasoline, it runs on electricity stored in a battery.
Person
john ivy
They’re referencing a well-known Apple designer to explain why the car’s interior feels similar to Apple’s style. The point is that the cabin looks like it was designed with a tech-product mindset.
A Mansory body kit refers to aftermarket styling components made by Mansory, a tuner known for aggressive, high-cost exterior modifications. The host uses it as a comparison to describe the Ferrari’s look as if it were heavily modified by a luxury tuner.
A Dodge Charger is a performance car made by Dodge. It’s known for having a powerful engine and a sporty look. In this podcast, the word “charger” is being used more like a name than a detailed car discussion.
Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is a recurring event in Pittsburgh focused on older cars and vintage racing. The hosts are saying it’s one of the good ones to go to.
Pit Race is a racing venue where cars can actually compete on track. The hosts are saying they heard the vintage racing there was especially fun to watch.
The Ford Crown Victoria is a big American sedan that’s especially famous as a police car. In this story, someone built one up with a wild custom audio system and special chrome styling for a car show.
That means the car had a huge number of speakers—way more than normal. It’s the kind of setup you’d see in competition or show builds where the goal is maximum sound.
“Rims” are the wheel’s metal part that the tire mounts to; changing rim size affects tire sidewall height and can change ride comfort and steering feel. The host’s comment implies they prefer a different wheel/tire balance than the car’s current setup.
Suspension work is changing the parts that affect how the car rides and handles over bumps. People do it on custom cars to get the look and driving feel they want.
Wiring is the electrical work—connecting and routing wires for things like the sound system and other custom parts. It’s important because it affects whether everything works correctly.
The Porsche Carrera RS is a special, performance-oriented version of the 911. It’s built to be more focused on driving feel and track-style performance. The podcast brings it up as part of a discussion about Porsche special models.
The Porsche Carrera GT is a very high-end, rare sports car made by Porsche. It’s known for being extremely fast and special compared to regular cars. The podcast mentions it as part of a story involving a particular owner or car.
Pinehurst is a place in North Carolina. The hosts are describing a driving event that starts near town and then gets more fun once they head out into the countryside.
A road rally is a structured driving event where participants follow a planned route, often with checkpoints and judging. In this segment, the host describes it as a guided route through countryside roads with an emphasis on the drive itself.
The Triumph TR7 is a classic British sports car from the 1970s. It’s the kind of older car enthusiasts like to see at car events, not just the newest supercars.
This is a Jaguar XJ that’s been turned into a race car. The point is that it’s been modified to be very light and very powerful, so it feels intense to drive.
The BMW X7 is BMW’s big luxury SUV. The host is just pointing out that even an SUV showed up in a lineup that otherwise sounded like it was mostly classic cars.
Gatekeeping means trying to control who gets to join in. Here, the host is saying car events shouldn’t be so strict about what kinds of cars people bring.
Shaughnessy Overland Express is a company that ships cars for people. The hosts are saying they handle expensive cars carefully and keep things private, with insurance included.
“White glove care” just means they treat your item like it’s very important. In this case, it means careful handling when they pick up and deliver your car.
The Chevrolet Express is a large van made by Chevrolet. It can be set up to carry people or haul cargo. In the podcast, it’s mentioned in a more promotional way rather than a detailed car review.
Cargo insurance is insurance for what’s being shipped. Here it means the transport company is claiming coverage for the car’s value if something goes wrong during delivery.
An enclosed fleet means your car is shipped in a covered trailer. That helps keep it safer from rain, dirt, and road debris compared with open transport.
This is a special, higher-performance version of the Cadillac Escalade SUV. The “V” version is meant to be quicker and more aggressive than the regular Escalade.
Acertis is a logistics platform that helps arrange car shipping and related services. In this story, it’s more of a coordinator than the company that actually drives the cars.
Titling refers to the legal paperwork that establishes who owns a vehicle. In transport logistics, handling titling can be part of the end-to-end process, which matters because ownership and registration must be correct for the vehicle to move legally.
McCollister’s Global Services is the company that ends up arranging the real truck/transport for the vehicles. The host says they’re more hands-on because they have their own enclosed carriers.
A brokerage service lines up a shipping company for you. The risk is that the broker might not control the actual trucker, so quality and responsibility can be less direct.
A bill of lading is the paperwork that tells a trucker what they’re supposed to pick up and where it’s supposed to go. If it’s not checked, someone can redirect the shipment.
This describes a scam where a towing or transport company is tricked into picking up a car normally, then later gets fake instructions to drop it off somewhere else. The thieves get the car and disappear.
Concept
conspiracy fraud
They’re talking about claims that more than one person worked together to pull off a fraud. It’s part of a lawsuit about who was involved in the scheme.
Here, “legitimate carriers” means real shipping companies that look legit on paper. The problem is criminals can still use them to move a car the wrong way.
Central dispatch is a system that helps shipping companies get jobs and instructions. The concern is that the job details can be manipulated so the car gets diverted.
A rollback is a tow setup where the platform can tilt down so a car can be driven or winched onto it. It’s a common way to haul cars on a trailer.
Concept
rebrokering
Rebrokering is when a logistics broker passes a shipment to another carrier or broker rather than handling it directly. The segment implies this can introduce risk if the receiving party is “shady,” increasing the chance of diversion or theft.
Negligent hire is a legal idea meaning someone is responsible because they didn’t take reasonable care when choosing who to work with. Here it’s brought up in a lawsuit about broker responsibility.
Negligent hiring means someone can be blamed if they didn’t properly check who they were hiring, and that mistake leads to problems. Here, it’s being used to argue that the broker should have vetted the transport company more carefully.
An expert witness is a specialist who explains technical details to the court. In this case, it would be someone who understands how car transport/brokers operate.
A broker is a middleman who sets up the shipping. The point being made is that the platform wants to avoid middlemen taking the job and passing it along.
The Jaguar XJ-S is an older Jaguar sports-luxury car. It’s meant for comfortable driving over longer distances. The podcast mentions it while talking about Jaguar XJ-related models.
The Subaru Outback is a wagon-like crossover built on the Legacy platform, commonly associated with rugged styling and all-weather usability. Doug’s group starts by guessing Outback before correcting to Subaru Forester.
The Subaru Forester is a popular Subaru SUV/crossover. In this segment, they’re guessing the car based on the bumper stickers and land on the Forester.
The Porsche 911 GT3 is a high-performance version of the 911 that’s meant to feel very race-like. They mention it as a joke suggestion for what someone should buy.
The Chrysler Conquest is an older performance car from Chrysler’s lineup, and it’s especially known for being a turbo car. Here, they’re talking about one that was found in a junkyard and rebuilt with a different engine.
An engine swap means replacing the car’s original engine with a different one. It’s a big project because you have to make the new engine fit and make it work with the rest of the car.
An “LS swap” means putting an LS-series engine into a different car than it originally belonged to. It’s a common way enthusiasts personalize a project and make the car feel different.
The Lexus LS is a big, luxury Lexus sedan. Here they’re talking about an engine swap—changing what engine is in the car—to make it more interesting than the usual setup.
The Chevrolet C10 is an older style pickup truck made by Chevrolet. People like it for its classic look and because it’s popular for customizing. The podcast mentions it as one of the possible older truck models being discussed.
The Ford F-150 is a large pickup truck. People use it for work, hauling, and everyday driving. The podcast brings it up while comparing older truck models.
The Volvo 240 wagon is an older Volvo station wagon with a very recognizable, boxy look. They’re excited because they spotted one and recognized it from the plate.
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is an electric van made by Volkswagen. It’s meant to look like a classic van, but it runs on electricity. The podcast is mentioning it as part of a “Buzz” reference.
The Honda Beat is a very small Honda kei car. It’s known for being light and fun, and they’re saying they spotted a yellow one at an event and followed it for a bit.
The Volvo V90 is a wagon made by Volvo. It’s designed for comfortable driving, especially on longer trips. The podcast mentions it during a road trip story.
A “dogleg” is a manual-shifter layout where the first and second gears are arranged in a stepped way. It changes the feel of shifting compared to a more normal pattern.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is a classic, very famous Mercedes sports car. In this clip they’re saying the car is a 300 SL and noting it has an inline-six engine.
The BMW 7 Series is a big luxury car. A “long wheelbase” version is stretched to give more space in the back seat. Here, they’re trying to figure out if the car they’re talking about is that kind of 7 Series.
The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car made by Chevrolet. It’s designed to be fast and fun to drive. The podcast briefly mentions it as the likely car they were talking about.
A Porsche 911 SC is an older Porsche 911 model. It’s from the classic era of the 911 and is known for its distinctive flat-six feel. They’re using it here as a likely identity for the car behind the “seven l” plate idea.
Runway numbers are the labels on airport runways. They correspond to the direction the runway points, based on compass readings. The hosts are joking that the plate might match a runway label rather than meaning anything about the car.
Diminished value means your car can be worth less after an accident, even if it’s fixed properly. Buyers may still pay less because the car has a history of damage. That’s why a clean history can help resale price.
A “make offer” program lets people submit purchase offers through the site. It’s a way to negotiate and potentially buy a car even if the auction didn’t hit the seller’s minimum price.
A reserve is the lowest price the seller will accept. If the bidding doesn’t reach it, the car doesn’t sell automatically even if there’s a high bidder.
The Porsche Cayenne is an SUV made by Porsche. It’s meant to be practical like an SUV but still feel sporty to drive. The podcast is talking about versions that are more manual-focused.
Hemmings is a classic-car company that runs auctions too. In this discussion, they’re comparing how many cars sell and how often listings actually find buyers.
BAT is short for Bring a Trailer, a website where car listings are auctioned online. They’re using BAT data to talk about how reserve settings affect whether cars sell.
The Porsche 968 is a specific Porsche model from the late 1990s. It’s a front-engine sports car that enthusiasts track because it’s less common than a 911, so it can be interesting at auctions.
This is a high-performance version of the Pontiac Trans Am. “WS6” usually means it has upgraded parts for better handling and stopping, and they’re talking about a low-mileage convertible listed at auction.
When you win an auction, you often pay more than just the bid price. “Buy fees” are extra charges the auction site adds to the total cost.
Term
default setting
A “default setting” is what the website turns on automatically. They’re complaining that the site’s default emails you every time someone places a bid.
“Final value” is the actual price the item ends up selling for. The host is saying some auction sites don’t tell you the final selling price after the auction is over.
Carfax is a service that gives you a report on a used car’s history. It can include things like accidents or title events, and the hosts use it to explain why this car’s story matters.
A Lexus LX 570 is a large, luxury SUV. Here, they’re talking about a specific 2021 example and how its listed price and sale speed relate to the story around it.
Retail value is an estimate of what a car is worth when it’s being sold, not just what someone paid for it. They’re comparing that estimate to the price it was listed for.
Term
overmarket
Overmarket means the car sold for more than what you’d normally expect it to cost. They’re saying it went for a higher price than the estimate.
A vanity plate is a personalized license plate where you pick the characters. The hosts are joking about what message they’d choose for a celebrity-themed car.
“Black box” is a term borrowed from aviation and investigations, referring to a key piece of evidence that helps explain what happened. Here it’s used as a metaphor for the Lexus being central to the case.
When Ferrari says “F1,” they’re talking about a gearbox that feels like a performance manual but shifts automatically. You still use paddles, and the car handles the clutch and gear changes for you.
This is a Ferrari 360 coupe with a manual gearbox. The point here is that the same basic model can be worth a lot more or less depending on how it’s configured.
This is a more hardcore, track-focused Ferrari 430 called the Scuderia. The key point in the discussion is that it uses the same kind of automated-manual “F1” gearbox idea as the 360 Challenge Stradale.
This is a special performance version of the Ferrari 360 called the Challenge Stradale. In this segment, it’s brought up because it uses Ferrari’s automated-manual “F1” style gearbox.
This describes a gearbox that still uses a clutch, but the car does the clutch work for you. It’s “manual” in spirit (gears), but “automated” in how it shifts.
SMG is BMW’s semi-automatic transmission system on some M cars. Instead of a traditional automatic, it uses electronics to shift like a manual, and the driver often still has to think about throttle and timing.
“Power shift” means changing gears while you’re still pushing the car to make power, instead of easing off completely. The host is saying that with certain transmissions, you have to experiment with throttle timing to make shifts feel right.
Term
adjustable shift thing
An “adjustable shift” setting typically refers to selectable transmission/shift modes that change shift firmness, shift speed, and throttle-to-shift mapping. The host is implying that different modes can make the car easier or harder to drive depending on how you like the gearbox to behave.
Concept
character
“Character” here means the car’s personality—how it responds, how it sounds, and how it feels to drive. The host is basically saying that just because a car feels cool or unique doesn’t always mean it’s actually better.
Concept
analog era
“Analog era” means the older style of cars that feel more mechanical and less computer-controlled. The host likes that feel, but doesn’t want to lose the improvements modern cars have made.
They’re talking about the Ferrari 296 GTB, a newer mid-engine Ferrari. The point is that even if it’s technologically impressive, it doesn’t necessarily feel as engaging as the older Scuderia.
This is the BMW M3 from the E90 generation. The host is saying the E90 M3 feels better to drive than the older M3 transmission setups, even if some people prefer the older feel.
The BMW 3 Series is a mid-size sedan made by BMW. Different versions can have different transmissions, which affects how the car feels when you drive it. The podcast is comparing transmission setups and how they relate to an M3.
Concept
values are going up
They’re talking about how when car prices rise, people start thinking about the car like an investment. That can change how you feel about driving it, because you don’t want to risk losing money.
The Dodge Challenger is a muscle car made by Dodge. It’s known for a bold, classic look and powerful engine options. The podcast is talking about someone getting one as a personal dream car.
The Aston Martin V12 Vantage is a sports car made by Aston Martin. It uses a V12 engine, which is known for strong power and sound. The podcast says these cars have become much more expensive recently.
A Porsche Boxster is a sporty Porsche roadster. “Spider” here means it’s the convertible version, and the host is saying this particular one is especially appealing.
PDK is Porsche’s automated manual-style gearbox. It shifts fast and feels sporty, and the host is saying both PDK and manual versions can be great to drive.
“Leno’s law” is a nickname for a California idea about emissions rules for classic/collector cars. The host is saying it could loosen some requirements, but that it still comes with government oversight and costs.
Collector cars are vehicles treated differently than everyday cars, often because they’re driven less and valued for history or rarity. In this segment, the host connects collector-car emissions rules to how regulations could change for these vehicles.
California requires cars to meet stricter pollution limits than some other states. If your car doesn’t meet the rules (or isn’t exempt), it can be harder to register or drive there.
SEMA is an industry group that talks about rules for collector cars. The exemption is meant for older cars used mostly for shows and events, not everyday commuting, so they can sometimes avoid emissions rules.
Collector car insurance is insurance designed for cars you don’t drive like a normal daily driver. Here, the host says it can be used as proof to the DMV that the car qualifies for an exemption.
DMV stands for the Department of Motor Vehicles, the government agency that handles vehicle registration and licensing. In the segment, the DMV is the authority owners must satisfy to qualify for the emissions exemption.
They’re talking about tracking how much you drive the car. The exemption seems to require that you drive it very little—under about 1,000 miles per year.
The host is basically saying the government isn’t just removing emissions rules—it’s adding extra steps to make sure people qualify. That means more paperwork and monitoring.
Place
Hudson, Colorado
The host mentions a town in Colorado called Hudson as the “prop of the week.” They’re talking about something that happened there, but the specifics aren’t fully explained here.
LIVE
Welcome back to Switchcast season seven. We are so grateful to be back after a week away
that was purely my fault for forgetting that we had a podcast and I was in New England driving
an old Porsche with some old friends, which was a great excuse.
That sounds amazing.
This is a humble brag. Sorry, I couldn't do your podcast. I was too busy driving
bushes. Anyway, we know you all missed us because I had at least two people ask, where
were you? But they were asking in general about like, why don't you show up to my feed?
I can't find your podcast anymore. And that is all algorithmic stuff. Now, we aren't broadcasting
the full thing live on YouTube anymore, just small segments. But for those of you listening
on the audio podcast or our patrons, we are still here every other week. And if you do
enjoy our podcast, please set notifications up so you do get notified of a new episode.
Like it, leave comments, share, subscribe, whatever. Again, it all comes down that that
stinkin AI stuff is how we get promoted to other other people. So thank you for that.
Because we know you do it. I'm your host, Doug Tabott here with my cohost Tyler Sanders,
our technical advisor, Dan Doucet is in house. And of course, our exemplary producer, Ethan
Huffnagle. Switchcast is a main course of candor with a side of sarcasm, the automotive
cop podcast. That's not just for car people. Tyler, what is fueling this podcast?
We are drinking some G and T's because it's finally warm here in Ohio. This is an Isle
of Harris gin and tonic with fever tree tonic is my favorite gin is delicious.
Yeah, I don't know what do you think it's so it's you they make it with sugar kelp. So it's
slightly there's like a little bit of the sea but not like in a gross fishy way.
I hear you're visiting the Isle of Harris soon. Yes, as well. I'm specifically making a trip as
a part of the Scotland trip to go to the Isle of Harris distillery so I can see you going to
Scotland. Yes, I'm going to why are you copying me? It's not on purpose, but you just made it sound
like so much fun. I should have got paid by visit Scotland.com. Maybe they will pay me to come back.
I don't know. I want to be a travel influencer. That would be the greatest job ever trying to
imagine you're like excited smiling face like pointing in a mountain or something as a part
of a part of a travel advertisements like Doug loves it here. You should come to look at this guy.
No, it would be the same snark snark. Let's see we're warming up just like you would
do in racing you got to get the tires warm you got to get the fluids warm and you got to tighten
the knot between the seat and the steering wheel. So this is our warm up lap before we really get
into the serious stuff. But man, there's some serious stuff already. We're going to start off
with some serious stuff and then we'll get later as we go just so you don't think we're going right
to the yeah. Anyway, Greg Biffle, a famous NASCAR driver passed away last fall in a plane crash.
And of course, that's, you know, it's crazy to talk about because we just had Kyle Busch
pass away this past week is just from essentially pneumonia that came out of nowhere sinus infection
went bad and I guess it went septic and yeah so not many racing crashes thankfully but
life is taking its toll on other people. But Greg Biffle passed away in a private plane crash he
and some his family and some other people were going on vacation and it was a tragic death but
what's more tragic is that the family of the pilot is suing Biffle's estate for wrongful death even
though from what I read and it's going to take the FAA and everybody else a while to sort it out
but from what I read it was more likely pilot negligence than anything else that was the main
contributing factor to the crash but the pilot's family is suing Greg Biffle's estate
because he supposedly didn't maintain the plane or whatever you know but okay and to add more insult
to insult to injury his supposed friends raided his bank accounts after his death and then broke
into his house and stole a bunch of stuff so they basically did identity theft and just cleaned
out a whole ton of his accounts so if it wasn't enough that a whole bunch of people died in a
tragic accident you never now have all these lawsuits flying around and fraud and theft and
it's just it's sick it's sick it really is okay we're going we're going up from there only up from
there I noticed a couple things I'm bringing trailer recently the market is nutty the market
the collector car market has gone absolutely bonkers in the last couple weeks we will get
into that more later but there's just a couple things when you watch auctions you see things
and there's a 99 355 f355 spider the f is important because a three fifth no it isn't
it's wrong 355 is the f1 f355 is a stick so bring a trailer label that wrong
it's an f355 f1 spider okay I'm talking in circles nobody really cares about the f
uh zero f's given really uh 42 000 miles it sold for 71 500 back in february but the interesting
thing to note is a multi-year engine out service along with uh basically an interior recondition
and brake suspension etc totaled over 106 000 so somebody put 106 grand into a 71 000 car
which further proves the point or the old saying that the only people who make money off of restoration
are the restoration shops they also mentioned in there that they changed the interior color
it said the interior is reupholstered in black leather which doesn't mean it's a color change
but if they change to the color of the interior that could explain some of the cost it's it's not
a either way 106 grand and you get 71 back for the car and it was probably a 40 000 car before
the restoration so you got 30 k back on your 100 k restoration uh yeah well so then can you explain
this to me while we were at sandhills we overheard some other patrons of the not patron but other
some other attendees of the event talking about a uh 355 f1 spider that was on bring a trailer that
sold for 125 000 now this one was a siri fiorano car which is more special but like what made this
one with 4 000 less miles and no restoration go for so much more money is it just because it's a
siri fiorano yes okay yeah and that's one thing that they didn't mention so we were eavesdropping
on a table next to us um we were at sandhills motoring expo in pinehurst north carolina this
weekend and uh we'll get into that in a little bit um but yeah they were talking about this crazy
result for a 355 and i'm thinking man that is nuts i go wait a minute is this a siri fiorano
sure enough it was i'm like okay key key information uh there are still deals to be had in this
market though the r8 spider i think is a car that is just completely overlooked a six speed manual
r8 spider v8 with 26 000 miles uh bid i thought it sold anyway bid to 85 grand in may first of
2026 which is not too far off of what they go for the v10s go for into the six figures but i mean
that's just it's such a crazy value uh please look so good i prefer the first gens v8 or v10 but
the first gens if i could pick i'd probably have a v8 one like that's just so good
tyler tell us about the news from marinello oh so everybody knows by now because this happened
today yesterday um the ferrari how do you say it is it luce luce that's what i so the ferrari
luce certainly not the ferrari loose uh although they make some loose a lot of money on it i was
thinking a few people up in their management have some screws loose i think with uh and the the
stockholders agree you can't buy your loose change because it's start to 550 000 bucks or euro or
okay well tell us about it the ferrari stock price for those keeping track as the day of
recording is down 18 percent today so what so yep wow yep so it has uh it has fallen off a cliff
so it's an ev it's a full ev ferrari finally did it five seat situation i think everybody's talking
about it today we're not going to say anything new about the fact that it looks terrible um it doesn't
exude ferrari it's not a dream car for anybody other than maybe a tech bro um but i think the
thing that bothers me the most what i feel like i can add to this conversation uh and truly if you
haven't seen it go look it up it's a sight to behold um it looks like a sneaker yes it it looks like
somebody from apple designed a ferrari and somebody did at least the interior was done i think it's
john ivy is the guy's name who's like really really famous for a lot of design activities at apple
and the interior i think honestly there's some things i like but the whole car looks like you
told apple to make what they think a ferrari should be because it looks like uh you took a key and
put a mansory body kit on it it's like yeah and it's like it's it's smooth but there's and the whole
the reason i keep calling the apple thing is if you go to the website the announcement page for
the lucha it looks like they're announcing an iphone oh we did all of these things in this way
to make it beautiful and do that and make this an experience what it just feels tech bro to me
in a way that like i like apple products more than i ever have in my life but i still hate
the superiority and like we know best we know design this is how it has to look the
this is a premium experience this is a like whatever they've got to make you feel that way
because they're asking half a million dollars for it and i don't ask him they will they're not he
will push it down our throats it that and then some and you got to get tailor made you know if
you got to get in the club to buy the other cars and oh they're gonna sell a lot of these forever
because the next halo car is going to be like oh do you have a lucha like oh you probably should
buy one of those first i think if you're not in the ferrari club not like the ferrari club of
america but the ferrari buying club if you don't have status you're not going to well yeah i think
we're too late at this point but but yeah so go look up the lucha for yourself um we'll see if
ferrari stock price can recover what they're going to do i don't think they'll cancel it but
if the the guy that was involved with making the apple mouse that has the charger on the
bottom so you can't use it and charge it at the same time help design this car so
that's all i gotta say about that uh somebody on social media uh opine that ferrari is going
to issue a cease and desist to themselves yes for for ruining their brand uh let's talk about events
um because we love our car events it's car event season and i'm not gonna say that we have any sort
of influence over what events you go to but we do go to a lot of them and we share our opinion
because we're experts in our opinion uh we're like the restaurant reviewers you know
type out eight paragraphs tim nealy apparently does that he does he really yes long paragraph
hundreds of them he admitted to it reviewing restaurants but anyway so we do that with our
events right you know what what are the best ones what are the ones you have to go to i
think he might have too much time on his hands i don't know honestly the best events are the
ones we haven't been to yet like goodwood yes and um one day velocity invitational i really
want to go to that okay anyway uh let's see update we did not mention we are doing pittsburgh
vintage grand prix this year that's always a very good event it's not worth the whole week long
thing of multiple car shows we've especially now that race is no longer a thing because i never
saw but i heard the vintage racing at pit race was like really awesome because they could compete
the racing in the park is a sight to see is really cool it's an awesome experience but it's
not very competitive it's entertaining but it's slow cars it's it's a fun thing to do
for a day it's a really great day it's not worth the whole weekend week long thing um
ian callum is the honoree or mc or whatever it's called matron of honor what do they i
you guys told me what oh i have no idea but anyway um the the chief person there um so we're
going to do that we're going to take our not henrik fisker designed astin martin it's down there
and uh see if ian callum will sign the dash yeah oh dan is considering uh motor vise the 80s
themed event the immersive event is the night before in columbus uh yeah and then probably
uh drain first weekend of october i got asked back to be a judge although they haven't confirmed
yet so maybe they accidentally included me on that email it's like uh but they are doing a judged
supercar judge supercar show on the saturday before the sunday concourse so i think that's a
awesome idea step in the right direction of an already amazing event absolutely and then just
this past weekend we were at the sandhills motoring expo in pinehurst north carolina
dug and i went down to judge a couple of classes in the concourse down there and uh i think we
had a pretty good time we did we enjoyed judging very much as we always do the highlights of the
event were not the event itself for me anyway uh we found a mystic chrome
crown vic yes 36 speakers in a crazy system built by chef alan who worked at the pinehurst in
pinecrest on pinecrest in sorry and it was on like 28s uh it was it was wild and i loved it
everything except the 28s i would have smaller rims and i love that every time we asked him about
something it was he did it with like a buddy i think the paint he had done by a shop but
he did a lot of the suspension work he did all the wiring and joked that that's why his
phone didn't work and like it was it was an awesome experience at no point did he say it was rare
or going up in value yes and he like drives it on the highway like roadstrips it was so cool and
like that so something that you should always do at a car event is go to the parking lot because
you will never know what you see like this wasn't even parked there for the event it was the guy
that a chef at the inn that the event was hosted and the bacon was cooked perfectly too um you
know it's funny now they think about the contrast between his excitement about his car and one of
the cars we were judging which i won't say who or what it was um but it was a Porsche Carrera T
hybrid and the owner and you know everybody likes different things about their cars it's
fine if you like a car for its tech great there's people who love Tesla's not because their cars
but because they're wonderful pieces of tech um asking every owner about how they got to this car
why they bought it or what their journey was and why they loved it and it was oh i've loved
Porsches forever i've had a lot of cayans and then i loved the T hybrid system because nobody
else is doing it it like caught us off guard okay i mean that's that's cool but chef allen's got you
got you beat with his 36 speakers in terms of his like passion for for woody drives anyway
we also had the local Porsche club uh really uh we so we did the road rally which was an
awesome route through the countryside around Pinehurst i really enjoyed that drive but in
typical pca fashion the local Porsche club was ahead of us going 15 below the speed limit the
whole time it was so slow but once we got uncorked man that was that was an awesome
route i think the guy putting it on so that it was his favorite so far and i think he did a great
job of once we got out of like the the town there were some cool sights and some seeing a lot of the
golf courses around there and then we got into the countryside for some some really good good
driving perfect length it was two hours long yes started in the morning gave you breakfast all that
yeah great yeah no sandhills is a it it's a small market show we weren't aware of it but one of our
listeners invited us um it's it's got all the ingredients of a like non-regional show with
the rally and the judges and they've got good sponsors and they have a block party then the
night uh friday to kick off the weekend like there was you know food provided there was
lots of cool cars parked on like the main strip what i liked is they blocked off a lot of public
roads in the town to park cars on for the show which was a really cool experience rather than having
it kind of off on a golf course or we couldn't have it on a golf course because that is a golfers
town and they would they're all i mean we took over the town the car people took over the town
for the weekend yet almost everywhere we went everybody else was golfers yes it was weird like
it is a golfers town in fact they probably should have had a golf cart class in the conch hole
because it would have appealed to the locals more and there's probably some amazing golf
carts there because they have a uh us open course their pioneers number two it's it's they're serious
about their golf there not quite as serious about their cars i think they need to draw more from
outside to really step up the the the game on the cars but there was there was quite a dichotomy
because there are some awesome cars that were at this event yeah we had a manheim special triumph
tr seven that was more colors of yellow than the mint green gt three was of green but then there
was a uh uh original real 427 narrow body cobra yes and the greatest spiker any of us have ever
seen and that we just ruled over for so long and this amazing jag xj race car that the dude said he
was kind of afraid to drive because it was so it had like like 400 horsepower and he stripped
everything out of it so it was really light like it was ah there was some really awesome stuff yes
there was a boss 302 uh 61 that had like the perfect amount of patina that i would not be
afraid to drive at all and just like enjoy as is but then you oh there's also the lister jaguar xj
yes see um but then there's a line of like beautiful e types there's a couple 550 marinellos
like there was there was some there's a speed yellow 996 karara in the parking lot very excited
to see but but a bmw x7 snuck into the german engineering class with a bunch of classic
bmw's and mercedes yeah and new e v datona snuck into the supercar class yes so tyler
you've talked a lot about gatekeeping at your cars and coffee and pretty much everywhere you go
you're the king of gatekeeping these a little more gatekeeping on this event would have i think
running i've never tried to put on an event like this and i think to an extent
you know you need to welcome your local community and welcome the community that
that is going to help elevate your show to to gain a further audience but i think the golf cart
class yes i think sandhills is to the point now with the size that they could be a little more
discerning in what gets into the concours doesn't mean somebody can't participate in the weekend
or anything but it was very jarring to see a brand new bmw x7 park next to an awesome shark
nose m6 like an entire row of that year yes there was the maroon 2002 and like there was
so much cool stuff so i do think it's time to engage the gatekeeping uh button just hit that
bad and you know tell people no make it desirable because i think if you can elevate further elevate
what is uh what is there more people will want to come when they see the photos and everything
else if you're because pinehurst is an amazing destination it was a great place to stay but
when you see a photo of the best spiker you've ever seen and in the background is a bright
orange brand new dodge ev so just a gatekeeping time trust me it's fun it's work fit it's going
to elevate the show so we had a great time though very very happy we went yes and our
patreon topic is for the patrons who subscribe and we thank you very much for that uh manufacturers
that we miss specifically ones who have gone defunct during our lifetime so if you're not
a patreon member sign up at switchcast.live slash patreon or patreon.com slash switchcast

the shaughnessy standard of excellence same professionalism same personal touch expanded
flexibility we are proud at switchcast to endorse shaughnessy overland express as the
official transporter of switchcast visit soexinc.com and tell them switchcast sent you
now it wouldn't be a switchcast if we didn't talk about truckers stealing cars and there's
another one and there's a lawsuit around it as well this article comes to us from jalapnik
it's a decent article although i don't want to give him too much credit because at some point
during the article he says i don't know much about automotive transport but i assume or
something to that effect i'm like well you could there's a day when journalism included
well i don't know much about this i'll ask somebody about it but anyway the article
is titled dealership sues transportation companies after a Cadillac Escalade v vanishes into thin
air the long and short of it is bmw of henderson in nevada arranged a ship a car to auto nation
Cadillac in palm beach florida and they use the automotive logistics program acertis which is a
giant company fancy website probably owned by private equity carriers drivers shippers
resources they do this all in one we can do the titling we can do the shipping we can do the
storage we've got it all solved and i'm sure a bunch of business mba guys came up with this idea
and it works well in theory but it opens itself up to issues like we're dealing with in the transport
industry now well acertis doesn't actually ship cars so they connected uh bmw of henderson with
a company on their platform the company is mccollister's global services now mccollister's
is a carrier we use they have a great enclosed carrier um not network they have a fleet of
enclosed carriers that they own and they ship cars but they also have brokerage services which
is again a dangerous thing unless you really really have high standards like our sponsors
shawnessy overland express uh so mccollister's couldn't find a truck or as the article states
a suitable carrier to do this uh however the next day a driver with orlandy's towing which is a local
los vegas towing company mostly flatbed towing arrived at the bmw dealer with a bill of lading
and took the catalac away uh the suv which is valued at over 132k was dropped off at a home in north
los vegas quote pursuant to instructions it received from a person representing themselves
to be from mccollister's via text message uh and it uh orlandy's was allegedly told that another
carrier would be taking the catalac to florida now if you've been listening to this podcast for
any length of time you have already seen the ingredients here to the formula for a vehicle
theft by transporter there's at least one intermediary uh they book a legitimate carrier
that legitimate carrier picks it up not knowing that they're part of this theft the dealership
does not check the bill of lading or the carrier against anything else they don't verify it and
then at some point either before or after the shipment is booked the actual carrier who picked
it up gets instructions to drop the car off somebody else uh somewhere else and to somebody
else that person pays them cash they disappear with the car there's no trace of them now what
makes this one interesting is bmw of henderson is suing everybody involved mccollister's orlandy
towing and acertis alleging conspiracy fraud etc etc i wonder if they can prove that they
reviewed the bill of lading it had all the information on the up and up you know like
we didn't just accidentally hand the keys to somebody that wasn't actually representing
where the car was trying to go tyler it's like you've done this before like you've been listening
to my rights you know dug i do tend to listen sometimes because i have i am i am not an attorney
but attorneys have called me for my advice on this they have paid me i am a darn professional
expert on shipping fraud you even have a hat that says i'm charging you for this conversation
i should have worn it so yeah i am not a licensed attorney but when attorneys pay me for my opinion
on something that makes me an expert i'm just going to drop that resume right there um i should
have been quoted in the gelopnik article i could have put the pieces together for them anyway the
the fact
if i was advising a customer like whoever's car that was and the dealership had arranged
transport for that customer i would have advised them to sue the dealership as part of this
orlandy's towing really had as far as i can tell nothing to do with this and and that is a
like common denominator in these transport thefts is they go through legitimate carriers
they get assigned a load from somebody off of a platform like central dispatch or super dispatch
and as far as they know they are just picking up a car and delivering it and they're doing it
according to instructions on the bill of lading that's exactly what happened here the fact that
BMW Henderson released a Cadillac Escalade that's supposed to be going across the country
to a flatbed like a rollback a single car flatbed that should have been a major red flag well no
he's not driving all the way across the country those guys charge three bucks a mile not happening
so somebody dropped the ball and from what i can tell from this article i did not verify this
the bill of lading was not instructing them to go to florida either so if they check the details
on the bill of lading as this frequently happens is at the time that the carrier picks the car up
from the dealership it's got a different address on a bill on the bill of lading and the dealer never
catches it when they release it so which is crazy to me that and i feel like i say this every time
we talk about one of these stories that you are letting go of a significant amount of money
that is expected to go somewhere else wouldn't you just read a piece of paper you would do a lot
more than that but they can't even do that yeah i don't know
yeah there's there's a lot of people to blame along the way but ultimately
i think the blame falls on the dealer because they didn't verify stuff before releasing the car
and that allowed the car to be stolen now i think there's some blame that falls on mccollisters as
well because they were putting the information out there and potentially rebrokering it to a
company that was shady but and brokers can be held liable that there was actually we talked about
this before there's a case before the supreme court on whether brokers could be held liable
for a negligent hire and this was in the case of a large trucker crash and so they were talking
about essentially like the broker should have reviewed the company's safety record and stuff
like that which is more detailed and more nuanced than just whether or not they're a legitimate
company whether or not they'll steal the vehicle but the supreme court did hand down a decision
i think just last week that the broker can be held liable in the case of negligent hiring so
that may impact this decision or this lawsuit against mccollisters but ultimately if i was
asked to come in as an expert witness with my understanding of the transport industry and how
this stuff all works i would refuse to come in on behalf of the dealer i would come in on
behalf of the defendants and go no no no the dealer has major culpability here yeah they
didn't check their paperwork they let it go to honestly just about anybody and uh it's where
it all started yep yep uh well there we go that's that's just another one and again uh maybe
bmw of henderson can benefit uh from using go trans dot com which is going to highly vet
carriers and only allow carriers on the system that follow our rigorous procedures uh companies like
shonisy overland express who we love and use all the time and uh they can only go direct to carrier
on go trans dot com there will be no brokers allowed on there there will be no rebrokering
allowed and we will have policies and procedures in place to prevent it before it even happens
so you know a thing or two because you've seen a thing or two but don't use that because i'm
pretty sure that that's somebody else's and i'm doing something about it given
my no or thing or two experience yeah yep yep okay time for ever popular plate to sample which
is where we read off vanity plates and the other host tries to guess what kind of car that vanity
plate is on based on what the person is telling us about themselves with that vanity plate i've got
six for you this week some of them are from the sandhills motoring festival so you already saw them
but we'll see how good your memory is there's a lot of good we'll see how good your memory is
Doug your good your memory is okay i'm gonna start out with the sandhills one just because
i love this plate so much loading loading ns flex uh that is an nsx yes i do remember seeing that
plate with some sweet jdm style mods yes all right some of mine might also be from sandhills
Doug so let's see my memory sucks five speed v12 is the first plate for you i didn't see that one
it was that on the jaguar xjsc lister it was on the jag lister but you didn't see it i
but i saw that car that is a great car uh that reminded me of a high school story they'll tell
him full detail later but i almost my first car was almost a jaguar xjsc but not any jaguar xjsc
it resided in a collection of like 70 million dollars worth of pre-war cars but it was in storage
there okay for a famous uh stripper named busty heart nice who had such ginormous
artificial cans her party trick was to crush aluminum cans with her can
so that was almost my first car high school a bunch of a couple of crushed cans in the
disaster i honestly when i was looking for my first car i was trying to convince my dad i
should get a an xjs because i thought they looked cool they do look okay uh next one
for you so ready this was sent to us by j roberts i love this one okay gods woke gods woke i'll give
you a hint it's got lots of bumper stickers including god is woke it's an outback commit the sin
of empathy yeah it's an outback i know my rights for uh is it is it's a Subaru it is a it's a
forester ah so close yes i was going to guess that are like a Toyota yards god is woke i can't believe
it well we have really found as a part of this game is that some people spend a significant
a meaningful amount of money every year to say dumb things on their license
mine okay mine is probably dumb too but like god have some creativity like why would you repeat
a bumper sticker you're due for an update i am i decide that you should get on your gt3 barely
know her barely know her yes barely know i and or it did you gotta get it it made me laugh i was
also a manhattan in but it did it's that's good it's good because it's a met skirt ethan ethan
ethan heard ethan doesn't love it bump on listeners what do you think do you need another
gin and tonic over there ethan all right ready up for you dug oem ish oh yes that was a dodge
chrysler plimith no chrysler conquest yes the best one just it was a very nicely
upgraded chrysler conquest which we awarded first in our class i mean it was restored the dude found
it like a junkyard and entirely redid it and swapped in a like was it a one uz one jz i think
11 uz like v8 and like made up all of these new ls swapped lexus ls because that's a four liter
lexus motor that would be in an ls it's so much more creative than an ls though i like it so much
no it was awesome it looked like it was done from the factory okay next one for you i saw this one
on the way home i'm not sure if you caught it aw heck no i didn't catch that you didn't see it
oh you're like right behind us i'm like i hope dialer didn't see this aw heck is it on like a
takoma no aw heck same i mean similar this guy might own a takoma okay he might own a takoma
he has a bumper sticker that says i heart my truck oh but this isn't his truck no it has an
outline of his vehicle on the bumper sticker i heart my truck and then there's a silhouette of
his vehicle uh is this like an old like uh f150 or something like a c10 or a what dan what was it
no no no i i get what is Volvo 240 wagon whoa that's awesome i shouted out the plate on our art
walk did you really yeah yeah and it was funny because in the picture so my wife was i don't
take pictures and drive my wife was taking a picture of him so i slowed way down and he's
trying to take a picture of us passing because of our cars and i'm like no no i gotta get your
plate i was so focused on him hanging his phone out the window to take photos that i didn't even
acknowledge the plot didn't even look yes oh man because i remember that wagon thinking like
heck yeah Volvo guys oh heck um uh buzz buzz buzz light year buzz uh id Volkswagen id the um
what id for don't they call them like an id buzz or like a but what isn't there something to
oh yeah yeah no it's the Volkswagen id buzz is the bus yeah okay yeah okay no that was a correct
lead it was giving me a weird look like i don't know what i'm talking about which i don't with
new cars but okay that was a good guess that was a good guess wrong the most wrong you could be
i think um i'm actually kind of surprised i is a you followed this guy for a little bit
this is the yellow Honda beat that was at the event and that we followed for a short
period of time everything all weekend that we were behind all i i did not see his plate
i didn't see and they were very kind on the rally and pulled off to let us go ahead of them because
they were taking the the question and answer part very seriously and we were taking the driving
part very seriously all right Vermont plate this comes from a road trip i took recently uh up to
Vermont and upstate new york great driving trip um v 90 okay so it's not a v 90 it's actually parked
next to one oh is it really yes that's amazing did they just like steal the plate
it's actually registered to the v 90 um is it a 240 no is it a forester no it's a Volkswagen Jetta
i mean it's i i was heading down the the path of the joke i'm guessing because it's a wagon or
they just stole the plate maybe with some julian baby i can't believe it's parked next to one
so uh next one for you dug is it's a jz
um i'm gonna fail on my like JDM knowledge of what powers what visit toyota supra
like a mark four no uh
don't giggle dan i don't know break my cool it is a mark three supra
oh come on you're like you're giving me the look like i was so far off base no but we
we looked at this car very closely dug that is the taking my shirt off i think we might need to
put a sensor bar over that but no it is that it is the gorgeous the well tastefully modified
mark three supra that was in the class we judged wait the one that we gave second place and i didn't
my memory is terrible that was an awesome completely confident deadpan no
i was trying to figure out how to tell like how to make you i was about to go down some crazy
i love supra like mark four no i can confidently say no uh okay vermont plate again dog leg
uh is it like a any sort of 915 transmissions 911 or 912 no is it a Mercedes 190 e
no that means it's a what is that a w123 it's the is that the chassis dan am i correct
what is the what is a 190 what is the chassis don't use chassis codes with dan in the room
it is uh r 129 300 sl i didn't know that that was a dog leg yeah the inline six okay i did not
know only for the first few years all righty uh dan's gonna unfriend me after that one but
we'll just carry on i'll make you another gin and w201 was the 190 ease what is the 110 everyone
i'll i'll look it up later and be ashamed um s2 crazy s2000 i remember that one i do yep yep
is a pretty good looking s2 there's some good looking s2000s there all right massachusetts plate
seven l is this a uh what is it an e 38 bmw no long wheelbase
any other seven series long wheelbase no is it an a seven long wheelbase no
not the direction i thought you would go oh i'm i'm so railroaded into this now though
oh seven liter it's a corvette oh yeah that's the direction i thought you would go and it's still
raw that's just such an american thing yeah well it's not american it doesn't have a seven
liter and it's not a long wheelbase well i guess it could be a long wheelbase because it's not a
short wheelbase it's a 911 sc hot rod there's no way that that has a seven liter 911 would be
insanity yeah what does seven l mean it's just it's just a short plate it's just a cool plate
it means absolutely nothing that's why it was perfect seven lame i have an odd guess
what is the odd guess that would be a fairly standard runway number if he's a pilot seven
l seven l or 77 l is a runway number that's used and pilots do tend to like 911s
this guy isn't one but maybe the previous owner of that plate was
imagine two identical vehicles same year mileage options color and price the only difference

it's time for annual auction year in review now it is a little bit late in the year but hey we just
had so many other spicy things to talk about but we're going to compare all the online auctions
because there are so many of them and see which ones were the winners which ones were the runners
up and which ones we think will be the losers the crazy thing is there are just more coming on to
the the landscape it seems like every year I feel like well we're going to lose a couple you know
there's going to be some attrition because the little guys just can't compete but there there
never is that the small guys just keep hanging on and the big guys just keep selling more and more
I guess they're just taking market share from other means of selling although the physical
auction houses haven't seemed to have taken much of a hit either because that is just a big I mean
me and just yeah are you going to go to the Barrett Jackson in Columbus I think I'm busy
that weekend when is it I'm looking at I'm not because I forget I don't know what it is but
I think I'm busy yeah uh okay that's that's the that's an introverted way to answer that question
it's like I don't know if it's good enough for me to want to go I I I do enjoy the the
entertainment of the physical auctions but it's not something I'm going out of my way to attend I
like the ones in Amelia Island because the cars there are spectacular and it's relevant to what
we do and we're there already for a great car event but I'm not going to go spend a weekend
at a car auction I can find out what the stuff sold for later yeah it's the 25th to the 27th
of June in Columbus Ohio but I do agree like racing that weekend well it's it's a Thursday Friday
Saturday I do think that I there's a part of me that wants to go just to experience the chaos
because I know that it's like unlike anything that I've seen before but also I much prefer
the vibe of the uh the good thing the uh broad arrow the whatever at the shows we go to so that's
it's not going to be that and that's kind of what I like you're just so spoiled it's like you grew up
with a silver spoon I didn't your first car was German so I I want to try one of those novelty
American cars my first car see what plastic interiors are like I bet it's real fun my first car
was a mercury sable station wagon thank you very yes preview card has been returned thank you all
right let's get into this before we go too far left that's right uh bring a trailer the big the
big guys uh according to their publication 2025 out of 49 486 total listings for the year we sold
40465 that's an 81.8 percent sale rate for a grand total of 1.73 billion in sales these stats
represent a 12.9 increase in two total auctions a 16.2 improvement in sold listings and a 3.5
percent rise in sell through rate uh and a 14.3 percent hike in total sales dollars compared
with 2024 a lot of people love to say bat's it's all shell bidding the numbers aren't real
there is some of that on every platform there's some of that at real auctions that is the marketplace
in general that is the industry it is not the platform yes in all of these numbers there are
gonna be some you know fudge stuff that's not on the platform's part the platforms are not in
some grand conspiracy whatever i just want to address that upfront like is there's always a
conspiracy theorist yes but like yep so i think the part of the increase uh in sell through rate
they will likely attribute to uh their make offer program whereas prior to their make offer
once a vehicle went reserve not met it was just up to the high bidder and the seller
to make a deal off platform whereas now they run it through the platform you go back and
forth you have 48 hours to submit up to two offers so that way they can mark it as sold so i think
they're going to likely say that that has contributed to an increase in their sell through
rate whereas it's just i think it's a recorded sell through rate because we had better luck
making a deal with one of the under bidders or the high bidder after reserve not met auction
than we do we have had a zero percent success rate with the make offer system on bring a trailer
both as a buyer and a seller so far um so i i think we're not the only ones a new auction on
this scene this year is dupont registry live.com which is a it's a chad cunningham creation who left
give me the vin which was the nation's largest wholesaler um they have a hundred percent sell
through rate because they're all being sold at no reserve now of course they can do that because
they own i think all of the cars that are being sold there maybe a few are listed but they are
actively buying high-end cars and then running them no reserve on their own platform instead
of sending them through a wholesale auction now i don't care what you say about anything
from a marketing perspective that is the way to launch an auction i'd like because it is a completely
it is a unique take on the auction format i guess which is something that shouldn't be able to be
unique because an auction's an auction but there's so many people doing it the same way that you need
to be creative to i guess stand out and i think they've done that they they have they gained
attention a new marketing is not mark i've read someone says it's not about having a marketing
plan it's an attention plan and that got attention because buyers want to chase cars that can be
bought whether they're wholesale or retail buyers so if everything's no reserve you go okay well
high bid wins it maybe there's some games in the bidding there always is somewhere we don't know
but regardless the high bid wins it period
collector chassis dot com here to that one time that's new that's one of the small ones
small ones they have three auctions currently live they also do regular listings and they're
all bmw's well almost all stray bmw or outie in there that's a smaller one to watch to see if they
take off or just remain stagnant tell me about cars and bids tyler did all the data on this i'm
just i've just got opinions you've and connections dug um so i pulled
some data from classic dot com i did the same thing for 2024 to get an idea of for at least the
data that was available you know what is a picture of the the health i guess of the auction site what
are some of their metrics so i've got the 2024 and 2025 results up so for cars and bids in 2025
their sell-through rate i calculated at about 67 percent and their average unit price for
disclosed auction sales is about 26 27 thousand dollars now compare that to last year and it is
about the same unit price average but their sell-through rate went down nine percent from last
year with less auctions interesting so there's like 800 less auctions of about you know over
7 000 so like a smaller percentage or that's about 10 percent if i can math right um so i don't really
know what that means honestly i know cars and bids increased the acceptable range of cars that they
would auction because they're starting to go back further into the past correct um you know maybe
they're becoming a little more discerning in what they allow on the site not really sure but they
their average unit price is it seems they're staying in the same market uh bracket price wise
yeah and i have a few statements from cars and bids uh to address their changes over the past year
and i guess their the results don't seem great initially but we'll look at 2026 and see how
those changes flesh out over this year because obviously changes don't reflect in results immediately
but they did say that they expanded beyond our original era focus to better reflect what our
audience actually wants so they're talking about doing classics now um they uh did over 20 events
last year across a wide range of venues so they're following in bat's footsteps um with bat does the
alumni events um and uh they uh what did they say we doubled down on a very human enthusiast
first approach everyone here is a real car person i know that the people i know from there are all
car people and we lead with that whether it's customer support partnership or events we now
have a phone number on the site when you call you talk to an actual human who wants to talk about
cars which is a good response in the wake of the ai Cadillac on bat yes or just in general
every time you go to a website it's an ai chat bot that you and it's impossible to get to a human
you know when right you want to create an experience where somebody wants to sell their car with you
yeah but i will say bring a trailer at least for us has been very great with the support we are
always talking to people there's a lot of car people there um so yeah we can't say that that's
not the case at bat but um it uh it also seems like cars and bids is really positioning some
as the manual cayenne market they're really the green manual leaning there's been like two or three
others that have sold and not with that high number but they've gone for incredible money so
i think there's there's something they're tapping into i guess let's let's see if they can catch up
with bat in terms of the the high market values on the really special cars because there are a lot
of people competing for that higher end market so i will say though the volume that they do is
impressive i mean they sold this year um oh no they had an increase i had my sheets backwards
they had an increase of nine well i just i'm clicking around they they had an increase of
about 800 cars this year so they sold more cars the total price of disclose sales was 142 million
got you moved through not so through the increase in number decrease in sell-through rate yes that
which makes sense make sense you're gonna have that so i apologize for the mess of ethan fix it in
post make me look like i'm an idiot okay sbx did you do sbx i did oh yes so last year wasn't a full
year to their credit this is super carblondi site sbx in 2024 um we did a little bit of a we did 24
into 25 to make it a full year because they weren't there for the full 2024 year um had like a 111
auctions sell-through rate was 30 percent you know wasn't looking super it was it was a boutique site
which i think those numbers kind of make sense for a boutique site they had 307 auctions in 2025
and a sell-through rate of 24 percent so still woof not a lot um the average is 165 thousand
dollars though which is dramatically higher than any other site because i think they position
themselves as a very boutique uh auction site but i will say the sell-through rate is uh
it's a little low yeah i don't actually know what normal is but that just feels a little
how's p car market doing is uh is there under new ownership now they are and they
have reduced the number that i'm actually looking at it correctly this time they've reduced the number
of auctions they've they've only done 1500 with our my just firsthand observations it seems like
there's less cars coming through they're selling less but their sell-through rate has increased
as has their average unit price okay well was there old and what's their new sell-through rate
old sell-through was 27 percent so the new is 32 percent so we're moving in the right direction
nowhere to go but up 27 percent okay uh does that include like the deal tank cars and stuff like
that or how is that so if that if it has a sold price which i think and i would need to because
it's been a minute since i put these together i think if there is a sold deal tank that price
is reflected on classic dot com i think you are correct so if that's the case report stuff on that
is that is considered yes all right all right but they've moved you know in 2025 you know 49
million dollars worth of cars which is down but honestly down by 5000000 and you know over
a thousand auctions like percentage wise i think they're they're much healthier it seems this past
year okay good good what else you got i've got hagerty hemmings mb market all right how what's
hagerty continues to just like their sell-through rate is 72 percent this year they're just moving
cars things are happening i don't know they are yeah they have a big audience huge
audience i mean they're up also 15 million in disclosed sales from like they did 34 million
in 2025 and 20 and uh 2024 so it's big things and they're up like and that's their online
auctions only that doesn't include broad arrow correct okay because i don't believe broad
broad arrow would not be reflected in what is posted to classics and they're also like up 800
auctions so their trajectory is heading up they did about 2000 auctions last year wow that's big
hemmings is about the same they did significantly less so in 2024 they did 2400 auctions in 25 they
did 1700 sell-through rate of 31 percent in 24 and 29 percent in 25 but to me that kind of feels
hagerty at a 72 percent sell-through rate yes so bat and hagerty besides dupont which is all
no reserve bat and hagerty are the clear winners in terms of sell-through rate by far the only one
i think that's what sellers want is they want they want to go to a site that's going to get their
car sold well i forget who exactly i i think a number of people have talked about this you and i
have even talked about it that if you are ready to sell a car and it doesn't meet reserve how much
of a pain is it if it comes back like when you're at the point when you're ready to sell a car
you want it gone like the point is to move it like if it comes back to you because it didn't
meet reserve it's kind of a pain now the only car i've ever auctioned i had a reserve on because
i needed the money for another car but like in general that i didn't want it to come back
i will say though we'll talk about this more later there is a hack if your car doesn't meet
reserve i found and i i got the data from bat two on a number of auctions and we've found this to
be true ourselves rerunning it again at no reserve on the same site almost always really is a great
idea huh yep interesting because of all the notifications that go out to the people who
were interested before and again it's like the i think it's almost better than just a straight
up no reserve auction interest you get two shots at it and it's like you know that has it all has
it has is that always been the case i guess or is that a recent phenomenon i just started
observing it and so i asked bring a trailer for some examples of that and for some numbers
and they confirm yeah that's interesting i wonder if they're really well an amount of time that you
should wait like rather than sure shorter shorter time because it makes me wonder when uh you guys
at switch cars had listed my 968 for me and it didn't it didn't meet reserve but it was close
enough that we let it go because i didn't want it to come back i do it makes me wonder what would
have happened if it didn't if we didn't do that not that i was you know it's all good but yep
it would be interesting to know um mb market is the only one that is close to haggardy or
bring a trailer in 2025 they had a 51% sell-through rate but only 270 auctions well they're a very
small niche auction site so they're like the mercedes version of collector chassis yeah so the
fact that they had 270 is actually pretty darn good for a one make site and i appreciate that
they've stayed focused that's something that originally um my knee-jerk reaction to cars and
expanding their list of acceptable cars was well now they're just losing the point now i don't have
all the data i'm not in charge of a huge company they're obviously very successful so what the
heck do i know but you know i i appreciate that mb market instead of constantly chasing growth is
just focused on being the place to auction uh an awesome mercedes yep awesome classic mercedes i
don't know if they do new stuff then there's this site guyswithrides.com oh which they're still out
there they just won't die uh although they seem to have redefined their strategy again it used to be
the bat cleanup aisle and i'm not saying that like they said that essentially that was there
where you rejected from bat will try it here um now they are saying that they reject over half
of their submissions uh i'm not sure how that works when you have two per year
and their new marketing thing is if you pay a dollar they will pay 500 dollars for
professional photography and other marketing so you pay a dollar they pay 500 but
it appears i made these notes four months ago i checked again and this is still current it appears
that the last car they sold was in august of 2025 yet they have a youtube video where they're
knocking barrett jackson on their youtube channel for attention yes yes they've got a 14 000 mile
transam ws6 convertible for so right now though dug hacha hacha uh yes they do and a Volkswagen
thing uh with a high bid is a hundred dollars on the transam convertible there is snow in the photos
on the transam convertible yeah i oh boy i don't get it they're really trying
they are really trying and it's an auto automatic of course yep uh i wanted to talk a little bit
about just little things i think auctions do well and do not do well or changes they have
made so we talked about cars and bids um and dupont registry uh spx recently announced that
they're capping their buy fees at 15 grand which is a big move given that they mostly auctioned
very high dollar cars yes uh so they're trying to be more competitive with the other online
auctions so that's a good thing um what spx does not do well is if you are watching an auction on
spx the default setting is to email you every time a bid is placed on that item which is maddening i
do not need that many emails but they don't send me an email when that item is sold with like the
final value and i'm like flip it flip it yeah that seems crazy um spx also doesn't publish the reserve
not met number uh collecting cars in the uk uh or uk europe etc it does not does also follows
this strategy and i know why they do it because a reserve not met shouldn't be a data point but like
in this day and age of data available for everything i'm just like just everybody else
publishes it just just publish yeah so because it makes it feel like they're hiding something
kind of but i agree with i think either nobody should do it or everybody and almost everybody
does it so just yeah just do it but i i i agree with the reasoning for not doing it uh dupont
registry also doesn't email the final result so you have to go there and log in to see the final
value um but i'll overlook that because all of their cars sell um sotheby's motorsport does not
email final results they either they just email it's almost over email uh p car market doesn't do it
either um they send you a you know this item is ending soon but they don't send you a this item is
sold um but p car market actively works all bidders after the fact to try and make a deal on a reserve
not met car so um yeah they'll they'll start working the deal before the auctions over uh even
sometimes so um bat i think the things they do well are the end of auction notifications um what
they do not do well we already talked about this the make offer feature i really don't like that
what cars and bids my criticism of them is they're like subtitle uh they love using
terms like mostly unmodified or mostly southern owned and i'm like you know it either is or it
isn't if a car lived for one day the wrong day in the wrong climate on salty roads it doesn't
matter how long it lived somewhere else and they're big on like florida owned southern owned
on that being a selling point and florida owned is not a selling point southern owned in general
is good but like southwest southeast eh depends where depends where i only have one data point
but my corvette did smell like a boat and sunscreen so exactly and it came from florida and it came
from the east side of florida but you bought it from like the want to be tiger king i did it was
wild yeah yeah anything else you want to add to that tyler no i think it's uh
interesting to see where these sites are going as the discourse has been filled with all of the
omg Ferrari going for what now kind of stuff which is exhausting depressing whatever like i don't
really like it's it's not fun it's it's interesting but it's not fun uh for all this stuff to go for
bonkers monies but it's interesting to see on a whole how all the sites are kind of how they're
doing and it seems that status quo some people are kind of up or down a little bit but nobody's
made some big moves in terms of you know the ton more cars a a ton more value at etc i think
dupont registry is going to be the big mover this year when are they even on classic uh no i don't
think they are i don't see the results on there so classic dot com shouldn't well it's that it's
not about classic dot com fixing it and this is my problem with classic dot com speaking of sites
that don't do things well so classic dot com is a great resource for historical values on cars and
current values however the only way you your data point gets published on there is if you are paying
to advertise your cars on there so their data is not real data it's people are paying to have
their cars listed there and i gave them this feedback when they tried to get me to advertise
i'm like you don't know who your customers are you're trying to make it everybody because you
want us to pay for a subscription to the data but the data isn't comprehensive data because you're
only getting data from people who are paying to be on there yeah and they want to have individual
consignors so they're competing with their dealers who are paying to have their data on there because
they want to sell cars also and i'm like you can't have it always so i love classic dot com but it is
incomplete data so it's yeah uh we of course have to since we've talked about all the auctions we have
to uh end it with a humorous excuse there's so many people who will type in their excuses of
why they're not bidding on a particular item they have to announce to everybody else why they've
chosen not to bid this was a fun one somebody said quote i know no one will believe me we had the
fire alarm go off in a chemical plant right at the end false alarm too bad for me what let's
listen it's a better excuse than i already have eight of them i don't need nine i uh i just saw one
here on this 1979 toyota pickup that says i was being dumb but i didn't want to be stupid
that's good that's i i'm guessing though he was bidding and stop he did that was after he got out
bid by uh like 175 bucks it was he was out that's good that's good um okay shrewd negotiator
i don't know how this falls into shrewd negotiating but uh karen reed's lexus showed up
recently at autobahn usa is anybody i feel like ethan knows who karen reed is
nope tyler dan okay well the women who are listening know who karen reed is all seven of you
we're up to seven it's yeah it's 0.5 percent of our listener database but anyway uh karen
reed my wife listens to true crime podcasts and karen reed is a massachusetts resident who
was tried for running over her i think it was x boyfriend who was also a cop and backing over him
with his with her lexus but there's just all this it was very very murky uh in terms of like who
was drunk who wasn't drunk was it a police cover-up conspiracy was it this was it that
using the black box data from the lexus trying to prove it she had a broken tail light but
yeah it's just it was it's very very confusing and i've listened to podcasts from both sides of
things and i'm i'm clueless but anyway the lexus which she allegedly backed up in order to uh run
over this person um was for sale just recently at autobahn usa in deadam a friend of mine runs
like the buying for the group that owns that i texted him i'm like did you buy this he goes no
but i approved it um anyway so people say that celebrity owned cars don't typically do anything
for value if you get a car from like an nba player or musician nobody really really cares
but but if you are the center of a murder trial apparently it's a big deal because carfax
shows that the retail value for this 2021 lexus lx 570 in black is about 80 thousand dollars
while they listed it for 100k and it sold very very quickly so about 25 overmarket to tell people
that you have karen reads lexus but the real question is because we love our plate to sample
game if you had karen reads lexus what vanity plate would you get
just reverse just reverse that's a good one i was gonna get freed
oh nice because there's a big movement free karen there's a whole bunch of protesters and stuff
like a huge movement but spelled rea d because that's how she spells her last name so it could read
as f read or freed oh i like it black box because it's a boxy black lexus and the black box was
at the center of the case the new oj oh that's a long play how are you gonna fit that just th
n e w o j oh i gotcha they could really obscure make you make them think about it
reverse uh reverse is good just maybe a little on the nose but

switchcast when ordering to receive a free rtd gift we talked about auctions but what is happening
in the market there's been there's been some crazy crazy movement and we've tried not to talk too
much about just the car market in general lately because it's sad depressing whatever but it is
it's dollars and cents yeah love cars for what they are and i have a feeling over the past 60 days
we cannot but i also have the feeling that the people spending this money on these cars are
not necessarily doing it because they want to drive the heck out of them no and that's none of this
where i get grumpy yeah uh yeah because it means they're become they are out of reach now
i this is a soapbox i'm always on but they're like out of reach now for the people that would
drive and enjoy them because they're becoming assets for rich people and that bums me out some of them
are great okay take that back well okay ferrari 360 spider f1 okay it was six months ago
that manual cars were selling for low hundreds for a spider and coups were selling for like
low to mid hundreds and sub hundred k for a mile car an f1 spider sold last week for 122 grand
that's not that great of a car an r8 manual spider is way better in every aspect and it's
okay yeah um a ferrari 360 manual coupe sold in october 2025 for i think 85 grand 82 85 something
like that the same car sold two days ago for 172 000 it went from 85 to 172 in nine months i'm
really glad that i'm not a mega ferrari fan right now i think a lot of people aren't now after the
luce but you know whoops why the question is will that make ferrari's vintage ferrari's go up or down
i did see somebody i follow on instagram said oh someone asked them like are all of the mega
ferrari prices a result of people who saw the luce early and are like oh ferrari's going down
like uh they're going down a path associate with a brand that's going down everybody wants to have
the last of whatever but they still want a brand that has cachet i do wonder though if there was a
bit of oh the new ferrari's aren't going to be what we want them to be i need to get in on the old
ones now and then that flip but it's a an interesting question i don't know how real it
i think it is the better okay well let's let's not talk about cars that aren't good to drive
let's talk about how people's perception of cars drive based on the price
mm the most silly conversation i've had is around the 360 challenge stradale and 430 scuderia
both of those have the single clutch clutch single clutch automated manual f1 transmission
it is not good it's not bad in the 430 but it's not good like it's so not good that in 2008
nine i sold a bunch of scuderias i'm like man this car is fantastic love it great i sold one in like
2014 and i remember driving it i was so excited to drive it because i hadn't driven one in a few
years i'm like man i missed driving this car and i was like oh this transmission sucks i
forgot how bad it was we are now to the point though where that the transmission becomes a
a part of the experience a part of the time it was made so now that we've moved past those
early transmissions it's a way to experience something that isn't made but nobody's saying
it's that there's there now that stradales and scuderias are nearly a million bucks or more for
some they're saying oh no the transmission is actually pretty good it's it's really not that
bad i'm like no it is that bad oh i have heard the other like where it's it's a it's you know it's
kind of nice to go back to this where you have to engage with it more it's less easy yada yada it's
like harder to use i drove an m3 with the smg the other day and it was not nice to go back to where
you had to engage with it more i spent the entire drive trying to figure out how to make it a suck
less like do i take my foot off the throttle do i keep it bury it in do i power shift do i dial
it up dial it down because they have the like adjustable shift thing i'm like i gave it back
of mic i'm done please give me manual i gotta be honest i am so guilty of this in a different vein
because i remember when windows vista came out and i thought that was a steaming pile of trash
because i didn't have my family didn't have a computer that could run it and now i specifically
have a computer with windows vista to run old software on because i think it's amazing and i
think we've lost our way is it actually good or is it you think it's good because other people
are paying lots of money for it no no i think it's actually good because where we are today is a
shell of what computing used to be okay it's lifeless it's a husk it's it's all about like
advertising to you and stealing your data and just it's it has no soul which could be not the
advertising stuff but the having no soul is the way that i look at a lot of new cars though
which might be incorrect because i don't own a new car but so i'm looking for something with
character and soul and an old f1 transmission has character i don't know if it has soul but it has
character there there's good character and bad character hundred percent so we do want to go
back to a better more analog era but not with everything like cars are getting better whether
we like it or not like a 2015 viper is leaps and bounds better than a 2003 yeah so that's
not something i want to go back to but a 430 scuderia is definitely more engaging driving
experience than 296 gtb but that doesn't mean the f1 transmission is better like the dct and a
e90 m3 is far and away better than the smg and the e46 so you can't convince me that an e46 is like
it it's somehow better because like let's say they skyrocket in a value above the e90 that wouldn't
make it better i don't know if you followed my no no i do it's it has character but that doesn't
mean it's good but people will say character is good and especially now that the values are going
up it becomes cool to say and you also if you're in the market have to you're reasoning with yourself
to be like no i spent this much money because it's worth it yeah but i know i watch a lot of
scene through glass on on youtube and he achieved the dream of owning a challenger dolly last year
and he even just in time when he said to he's like this is an amazing 150 to 2000 $200,000
driving experience he's like i cannot imagine spending anymore on one of these than that he's
like it's insane yeah yeah so even he doesn't get it and he's like this is my dream car i
chased it forever but it's still like guys this is insanity back to what you said kind of at the
beginning of this discussion is people who are driving them are selling them because they're
afraid of the values like i'm to that point with my six liter where i'm just like erin and i discussed
it the other day and i'm like i now am forced to think about that car as an investment and i make
my decisions on driving and maintaining and whatever based on the fact that it's now an
investment and i it it's disappointing to me because it's not like you achieved that dream
or that goal of owning a diabolo because it was something that was on a poster or in a video game
or whatever and it's like oh my god i've worked so hard and here now i can do this and now it's
like you don't want to do the thing that you dreamed about doing in it as much well i said oh
my gosh because i was homeschooled but yes yeah no it's it's yeah nsx's have gone through the roof
i called that one v12 antages have gone through the roof call that one too i did not call the
other ones but uh yeah that's i'm curious to see what happens i don't think it's a bubble but the
rate of growth in values is not substantial sustainable not saying that growth isn't or
that they won't hold their values but the rate of growth is not sustainable the fact that a
challenger dolly is tripled in value inside of the last year that can't happen again
that can't we keep saying this though it's been like three years of us like that cannot happen
again i mean i i don't disagree percent or 20 percent year over year okay fine that's just
that's a trend but you can't triple and then expect it to happen again yeah that brings us to the
props and flops brought to you by switch cars and switch cars is the enthusiast dealership

Doug what is the pick of the week from switch cars inventory uh well they bought a 2011
Porsche Boxster spider yes it's pdk but in that car it doesn't matter and that's not just the
nostalgic me talking like i've driven both manual and pdk hard and they're both great
their colors are really great black black over black standard sport seats not the sport bucket
seats kind of like a comfort spec it's got the automatic climate control of the comfort spec
yep but every single one of those cars have ever driven has been awesome it's one of my favorite
modern Porsches for driving uh flop of the week Leno's law is back on the table again
which Leno's law is uh something it's not actually Leno's law but Jay Leno has been
championing it a law in California which has incredibly restrictive emissions requirements
that uh Leno's law will roll back some of those for collector cars um but
like all laws it does more not less and that's why i put it in the flop of the week category
it adds regulation oversight and government expenditures and puts additional burden on
the citizens here's why so currently uh the california emissions restrictions apply to any
car registered in the state back to 1976 this will change it to 1981 so they're only granting
exemptions to five model years of cars which is hardly any of those left and it'll gradually
roll up to 1986 model year by 2032 which again why do this roll up thing like just just make it 1986
it's also designed to focus on true collector vehicles those used primarily for shows parades
charitable functions and historical exempt exhibitions this is according to seema.org
rather than as an owner's primary mode of transportation and to qualify for this exemption
you have to prove to the dmv with either collector car insurance or this future magical process to
where they're going to track your miles that you drive the car fewer than a thousand miles per year
who freaking cares this is like 0.0002 percent of the vehicle population in california and who's
daily driving those anyway like it's just it's more laws it's more oversight more regulation
and we're handing it to them going yes please monitor us more just 25 years old just end emissions
just why even bother like it's such a small percentage of the driving population it doesn't
make a dang difference but california just has to have their teeth in freaking everything
here i thought i heard some stuff and i didn't do any research on this so i was curious to see why
you were so disappointed i was under the impression that it loosened some of the
restrictions but it seems like whatever i had heard was either incorrect or it's been adjusted back
to additional limitations and tracking or whatever like why like i just in loosening those restrictions
so it's adding all these qualifications and these reasons for them to monitor you and track them
like well yeah the like thousand miles a year but then you have to prove it like all of a sudden
it's just like holy crap like it's why paperwork it's more employees it's more people to keep track
of all this stuff like just just be done with it just say pre-1990 or whatever no more emissions
we don't care because it doesn't affect us because such a small percentage of the cars on the road
california can't not care our prop of the week is a town in colorado i believe it was hudson
colorado because i was hoping it was hudson ohio but no it wasn't has completely cancelled their
speed camera well not their speed camera program but they removed a speed camera
and refunded all of the residents who had gotten tickets everybody who had gotten a ticket
they wiped it out after over 1.2 million dollars in tickets fines had been amassed
in a very short period of time this is courtesy of rodentrack.com
so the officials voted this week to void every single ticket issued by a controversial
temporary speed camera the single camera issued 31 000 citations worth roughly 1.25
million which would be enough citations to ticket every resident nearly 20 times over on average
the big controversy was around the placement of it because it was between a 55 and a 40 mile an
hour zone it was 400 feet in front of the 55 mile an hour zone but it was actively enforcing the 40
mile an hour zone uh but the only post 40 mile an hour zone was a third of a mile away right near
a gas station so i think it was more of a sense of like oops we did this wrong than a we're just
not going to do the photo radar thing because they're discussing like okay well where could we do it
better so they are still gonna do it but at least there was one win for justice in a sense
where they said okay we screwed up this was totally a trap and whoops it was a money grab
we're gonna refund everybody but they were probably looking at a major lawsuit if they
didn't but we'll just we'll take the win yeah congratulations so i think in colorado uh we'd
love for them all to be done away with period and license plate readers and the whole thing
not gonna happen but you know little little win little win
already and and am i ending the podcast i started doing that and i was like i've never done that
before am i ending the podcast i'm just gonna let you step in and on that one oh that's fine

About this episode
After a quick break, the hosts jump into collector-car market talk—how restoration spend doesn’t always map to resale value—and then pivot to event culture, judging, and gatekeeping. The episode’s centerpiece is a transport-fraud story: a Cadillac Escalade-V allegedly “vanishes into thin air,” with the hosts explaining how brokers, carriers, and bill-of-lading handoffs can be exploited. They close with auction metrics, platform quirks, and a few more car-spotting games.
A $132,000 Cadillac Escalade-V disappears into thin air after being dropped at a random Las Vegas home mid-transport — and now the lawsuits are flying. Plus, we'll do a yearly recap on auction results.
