Headers are parts of the exhaust system that help the engine breathe better. They can make the car run faster and sound different than the original parts.
Sandblasting is a method of cleaning metal parts by blasting them with tiny bits of sand. It helps remove dirt and old paint so the metal can be treated or painted again.
Oil is a liquid that helps keep the engine running smoothly by reducing friction and cleaning it. It's important to have the right amount of oil in the engine.
A leak down test checks if air is leaking from an engine's cylinders. It helps find problems like broken parts that can cause the engine to run poorly.
Valve guides are parts in an engine that help keep the valves in the right position. If they wear out, it can cause problems like oil burning and smoke.
When a spark plug gets fouled, it means dirt or oil has built up on it, making it hard for the engine to work right. This can cause the engine to run poorly or not start.
The Hudson Hornet is a classic car that was made a long time ago, from 1951 to 1957. It was known for being fast and stylish, and it even won many races. People talk about it because it's an important part of car history and has a cool design.
Finding parts means looking for replacement pieces to fix or maintain a car. Some cars, especially older ones, can be hard to find parts for, making repairs difficult.
Drum brakes are a type of brake that uses a round drum to stop the car. When you press the brake pedal, shoes push against the inside of the drum to slow the wheels down.
Disc brakes are a more modern type of brake that uses a flat disc to help stop the car. They work better than drum brakes, especially when the car is going fast.
An Aerostar rotor is a part of the braking system from the Ford Aerostar minivan. It includes a hub that makes it easier to install when replacing brakes.
A bearing is a part that helps things move smoothly, like wheels on a car. It reduces friction, making it easier for parts to rotate or slide against each other.
The Ford Econoline is a type of van made by Ford that people often use for work or to convert into camper vans. It's known for being spacious and practical.
An AC Delco signal flasher is a part in your car that makes your turn signals blink. If you buy a good one, it works better than cheap ones that might break easily.
LIVE
What do you think you're ready ready hi happy Friday happy Friday this is a
new segment brand new not a news segment this is an unnew segment this is a
brand new segment and we're here for you yeah it's called the brain buster
brain buster got any more brain busters we're gonna ask you a question in this
case too we're each gonna ask you a question that'll be two questions total
that's exactly right and then you can add car crush the ARK our USH the answer
and then you win a prize this week it's a Corvette not deliverable to you by
males you'll have to imagine this Corvette as it's made of thin air very
lightweight won't rust won't no rust those rusty Corvette woes over you know
most people can't even keep the rockers on them so also the mileage now my
question my question my question sorry yeah monster trucked over you with my
question my question my question my question that's what just happened
it's like the Andrew Dice Clay quarterback bit just keeps saying quarterback
get it what I wanted to ask about this week my little brain buster for
everybody look good little boys and girls out there what year was there a
change in federal transportation law that affected the outside of car bodies so
much so that it would go on to affect design of car bodies different
stampings even federal oh my goodness federal wait will you say that again the
federalist no seriously will you repeat that for me yeah so what year what year
okay did federal law mandate federal automobiles needed to be different to
conform to this standard or law and Detroit said fine and not only in most
cases did they not take the easy way out mm-hmm but they took it as a design
challenge and adapted to this change what year do you think that was and what
change I'm not even going to tell you what the change was you got a figure in
both yeah this is your cast in a really wide net yep yep oh I don't want to make
it too easy yeah okay you're gonna be a real auto buff yeah this is a question
here's the thing you can't Google that question I hope not I hope you use your
brain power alone I mean in pure fun just don't Google it anyway but yeah thank
you can Google it yeah geez the way it's stated can't we have anything fun
these days you for you need to apply AI to now AI is in the transcript now you're
getting AI ads AI security I don't know that's what no it's watching us podcast
commercials sound like I did use AI the other day no I used it I'll just say it
real quick here thank you recall I used it because I was having a problem with
Descript and I couldn't figure out our I couldn't get our audio files in like
they were not going they were going in order so our podcast was like two hours
long and it was me talking for an hour and you talking for an hour instead of
them syncing up and it was very frustrating and I don't think people
would listen to the show like that I downloaded an audio chat bot one channel
very laps time yeah exactly it was like that it was like two and a half hours
can't wait to hear the other side of this conversation
oh I wonder what Rose said back yeah well it helped me though anyway that's my AI
experience so I feel like you got something else to say to over there
sitting over there I'll slide go ahead with your question madam my question is
how many companies owned Jeep oh my god you're asking for the body count on Jeep
what's the body count I saw a meme that was like I ruined Thanksgiving by asking
my grandma what her body count was pretty funny it is that you have to leave
something to the imagination there yeah that is a great question because Jeep
has been owned many times over as we noted and we gave that away right last
episode yeah our pile-up episode American Bantam yeah mm-hmm so that's where it
starts so that's one yeah wait did they own it or they just built it no they
designed it and built the first ones so were they owners they started it or well
the Jeep itself has a rather sordid past with ownership it was truly a product
of the US government okay well and we'll leave it or no you need to keep should we
keep giving them information yeah I think it's fine all right sorry listen we
have to decide carry on we have to decide if they're old enough for this
information or not so they understand you all can wait patiently while we make
up our minds on whether we can divulge this highly sensitive information to
you through a freedom of information request we learned that the Jeep was
requested by the government and that the amount of guns they wanted on the size
of vehicle they wanted everybody said no fucking way you're not gonna get it it
can't be done they said we can't put that many guns on the vehicle and so
American Band Ham said this is what you're gonna get for what you want we're
the only people that's gonna do it and they were like yeah you're probably right
and then somebody else was like yeah we can do something kind of like that too
and that's how it went down is that American Band Ham did it and then
another person who sort of became an owner in a way had a bigger factory and
made more of them okay because the government was like we need them you
got to make them so does that count as two owners right there the government
and American Band Ham I think so okay there you have it people we just gave
you the rest of the past at least two the rest of the path is more clear that's
one that you would you would probably have to Google and then we will buy
semantics find a way to skew the number some way that you're wrong it's right
that's a does no that's a good one that will lead people if they really decide
to go on this very rich journey through automotive history reading about the
ownership of the JUP it's actually GP general purpose
my dolphin sucks so bad yeah I you know my throat is just a little bit
flimmy I can't do a great porpoise it was a lot better than mine but when I
get some time definitely I come back with that okay that porpoise
impersonation a little bit of behind-the-scenes the Astro mm-hmm I was
doing some black Friday shopping and was thinking about getting headers for the
Astro and I thought it's not that big a deal I mean they'd probably look neat
but I don't know I'm still up in the air about it I'm really worried about that
one tube that I sent you the picture of that it would like touch the maybe the
side of the engine covers and I'd have to modify it like cut it and reclock it or
something oh that'd be a bummer I mean yeah it wouldn't be the worst thing it's
totally doable but anyway the Chevy Astro I was thinking about getting some
headers for it and I'm a little up in the air they're stainless they're cheap so
it's like they're cheap enough you know like there's some Sanderson and some
Headman maybe that are like 400 and 460 is that like I'm definitely not paying
that the $117 stainless ones even if they need a little bit of work like
that's great those are gonna hold up they look good that's like the thing is
it's not a performance thing they would just be shiny okay would look nice when
you look in there amongst all that dirt well that's where it's going oh wait
we're putting in that I forgot yeah we're putting in the fresh I forgot it's
orange I don't know why we would take it all this orange with the sandblasted
silver intake the raw aluminum intake it looks pretty good and then I'm gonna
get a better air cleaner for it and the valve covers look fine yeah so it'll look
tidier I forgot it wasn't the dirt ball that we're pulling out of it you're
right to say that it is gross I mean it's really gross it's pretty bad I
I mean it's how it should be actually was it yeah it was worked hard people liked
my picture that I posted of it when I said I just learned that oil goes inside
the motor yeah that was really funny it does look like I've been dumping the
oil on top of it most of it's out most of it is out of it you know for a long
time I didn't have a dipstick and it would just blast out of the dipstick
tube yeah I really didn't why do these things I don't know I will say that that
van was like me putting the astro back through the proving grounds again like
for no reason just like doing things to it that just are like well how would you
do this like running it down to two quarts of oil problem that's part of
not having a dipstick okay yeah what what's part of not having a tip not
knowing how much oils in it oh okay yeah um finally Sean Audi got sick of that
Sean went and got me one from the junkyard which was really nice of him
but I was like I can't get it in and he like he shoved it in there and I just
have to wonder if there's another one broken off in the tube or something it's
just always been really hard to get it to go in the last little turn huh it is a
long it's a very long tube so yeah anyway yeah it's covered in oil and it
was like that when I got it but obviously it's worse because I got it with
like 37,000 miles on it and it's at 110 now so wow oh my god you got it with
37,000 miles yeah but it was a delivery van for the University of Louisville so
it wasn't like cherry but it did run good yeah yeah they probably had to keep
it running but it was you know probably put it around idle all the time yeah
which is hard on the rings yeah so it's not I mean it did run awesome but I
like burned a valve or something I've never done a leak down test to determine
whether it's an exhaust valve or it's an intake valve that's damaged or if it's
just the valve guides that got it smoking so bad whether it's like an intake
valve and it's like smoking out that one cylinder you know yeah number five I
think no it's four it fouls the plug out constantly and just blows smoke all the
time that's what's going on that's why we're doing swap yeah it's very smoky
yeah the smokiest of the smoky something that I forgot to say about AMC if
everyone it's our last episode I talked about the mall ears all ears letter rip I
talked about the AMC Pacer and something that I didn't mention was one of the
guys in the video that I saw who was the head of interior design at AMC as he
was saying this he was getting pretty emotional and he was saying you know
there was no where there's no other automotive company to work that was like
it there was just like a really unique place to work it was really fun and he
said you got a lot of experience because you had to wear a lot of hats because
everything was so small and he was just really sad that they had you know he's
just like it's just a real shame that you're rocking the mic what like that
you're rocking the mic Emily Emily Emily for this part of this reached up and
grabbed the mic like she's like you know like eight mile she's gonna know what
she brought you in close to this one she's got her hand on the mic my hand
just went up there and it won't get off okay I'm surprised you didn't give him
like the really low down you know it's like you know one in the morning it
just sounded like AMC was a great place to work so again RIP AMC RIP AMC
that's my new acronym rip amic rest in pistachio I like pistachios I mean yeah
it was probably pretty hard think about like you go by an AMC and then you get
like a might get a Chrysler engine and transmission you know like bits of cars
from everywhere else but they really like they did some cool shit yeah they
did some really cool shit nothing but respect for yeah AMC I mean really cool
cars yeah Hornet you know I didn't know the gremlins just like a chopped off
Hornet for a long time oh yeah yep and the hornets really cool I like the
Hornets yeah so I mean it is the two of them together are excellent too I once
test drove a Hornet and I was a Hornet what was the Hornet did they do a Hornet
what did they do it they did a Hornet that was like an aggressive Hornet
didn't they murder Hornet no not like the Hornet AMX but well there's like the
gremlin X is there a Hornet X I feel like it was but AMX which is okay so they do
the horny hornet right they didn't they did it aggressive Hornet from what I
could remember and this was when I was in my 20s and I was I went and test drove
one and this guy was like he talked me out of it he was like you're not gonna
be able to find parts and he knew that I couldn't like totally work on it and he
was just like it's gonna be so hard for you to find parts for this and like this
was before the internet he was he said that he's like this is before the internet
you don't even know an acronym it's gonna be so hard for you to find parts
we'll be able to find parts until like you start using the internet which is not
until like 2004 so he talked me out of it he did you a favor yeah when when I
was driving that gremlin for a little while it wasn't mine and eventually it
was drum breaks and like they were just not great and I was like let's put
discs on this so we did manual discs like s10 but we the spindles on those
unbolt and they're symmetrical so they're just like they're shaped like a
traffic cone so you can unbolt the spindle and we had to like machine one
of the shoulders over so the inner bearing could be in further and we put
an aerostar rotor on it and then s10 calipers sounds really involved well it
was cool because the aerostar rotor has the hub built in so you go get a new
rotor and you get a new hub so like you you know it just makes it easy isn't it
scary taking material off of things like spindles sure I mean it in a sense that
you're like well if we fuck this up guess we'll have to fix it I don't I don't
know I mean it just sort of yeah I forget you know material science so you
know how much metal can stand I mean it's just sort of like in that case we're
just literally making it so the bearing would go in where it needed to go because
the inside bearing was identical so the rotor went on and fit great but the
outside bearing couldn't support it so we just you know we just put it on the
lathe and just move the stop where it was machine to stop the bearing just moved
it over so that the bearing could go further in I mean yeah a lot of people
wouldn't do it it's a pretty serious deep cut like to be like okay I'm gonna
permanently modify your vintage car so that you're stuck with another vintage
car rotor that's not that popular either but like it doesn't be even more hard to
find because it's custom maybe the AeroStar those I think the rotor is
fairly ubiquitous I mean the disc brake kit I had on the Econoline used four by
four Jeep rotors oh there's Jeep again you know it's all when you're doing the
disc brake shit you're always using some wacky thing so but you know what maybe
that is good advice buy two of a weird thing when you have a weird thing yeah
also my vintage AC Delco signal flasher holding upgrade I'm so happy with the
purchase that I have highlighted another one on eBay to get a backup because all
those flashers I kept buying at Napa and O'Reilly's were trash yeah so let this
be a warning to you all if you have weird vintage stuff and you can find it
right now stockpilot yeah that's a good get some like quality whatever the
manufacturer whether it's in Chrysler Ford or whatever get the get on eBay
while some of this stuff's reasonable good advice this is getting tricky out
getting tricky getting tricky getting trickster oh no got your brain busted
brain busted done brain busted oh I hope we get I hope we get answers to our
questions too yeah you know we have a really active listenership yeah like to
reach out don't make us make up somebody that wrote oh my god a new low she
won't let me do that but my god do it please participate yeah goodness gracious
and brain busted yeah you done got your brain busted yeah let us know oh bye and
let us know
you
you
you
