dipstick
A dipstick is a simple tool you pull out of the engine to see how much oil is in it. You look at the marks on the stick to know if you need more oil.
A dipstick is a long, thin metal rod used to check the level of engine oil in an internal combustion engine. It is inserted into a tube on the side of the engine block and then removed to read the oil level against markings.
