LIVE
Welcome to Best in Class, the podcast where we talk about the best versions of the best
cars.
Thank you for joining me, Steve and my good friend Adam.
Hey, hey!
As we argue over one of our favorite cars, we're at the top of the game.
Oh, it's been a while.
Oh, good to see you, my friend.
Good to see you.
It has been a while, Steve.
We are looking at last August was number 150 and we left at the top.
Oh, I just remembered that's why we stopped because of the number.
And now we're 151.
We're getting too big.
What a ridiculous number.
We're getting too big.
It happens.
I mean, yeah, so good to see you.
Yes, we were taking a sabbatical, but now it is good to see you, Steve.
Something has happened that I think must be talked about.
Lots of lots of intrigue.
Lots of stuff.
I've had a lot of questions, meaning a lot like, I don't know, maybe seven to 10.
Oh, wow.
You know, that's a lot.
Everyone you know.
When you have four friends and you get 10 questions, that's a lot.
So to recap for some of our listeners, Los Angeles, where you and I both reside, specifically
Steve, where you reside in Malibu, has gone through a lot recently in the last few months,
basically January.
Your entire town burned to the ground.
A lot of it, a fair amount of it.
Yeah.
Made national news.
Six weeks of the Palisades and Malibu and a lot of LA on fire.
Yeah.
A lot of people lost their homes, lost their dreams, lost their possessions.
Some people lost their lives.
It is a tragic situation.
And now you think you have a unique part of this.
You have a unique...
I felt it was time to focus on me a little bit.
Okay, got it.
And people have lost, you know, family homes, you know, historical landmarks have burned
down.
Yeah.
One of my wife's clients, they lost their second home.
Yeah.
I know.
Their second Malibu home.
There's real struggles out there.
I know.
I know.
But that happened in...
Our first fire was in mid-December.
Okay.
And that's when all this started off.
Now, we've always been ahead of the curve on this podcast.
We've tried.
We've tried.
So, in mid-November, the Ferrari burned to the ground.
All I saw was a single Instagram quick like GIF, basically, it was a 30 second or less
video of a black Ferrari on Muccio Fire and everyone's like, oh, that's Steve.
So, I'm like, oh, really?
And it has taken us this long to talk about it publicly because you've been dealing with
insurance.
Yes.
I'm dying to hear this story.
There was insurance and then there was the world on fire.
And so, essentially, my lovely 308, which you and I cherish immensely, it was basically
like an icon of LA.
Oh, yeah.
And I mean, an icon of this podcast gets brought up every single episode.
Every single time.
I mean, probably only behind maybe James Bond's DB5 and, you know, I can't even think of
another one.
Yeah, the cultural importance.
Maybe the smoking the bandit car.
Speed racer.
Maybe.
It's not a real car, but maybe.
Maybe.
And I've driven it.
You have.
I've driven it.
So, very important there.
You know?
Other than.
Yeah.
Other than me.
You were the last.
You need to drive that car.
Oh.
You picked a good time.
But yeah, it lit on fire.
So I want this story beginning to end.
Yeah.
Well, I had taken the car out to go meet our friend of the podcast and motor and club,
Nate Kelly for a little coffee.
I had a friend of mine will say friend who wasn't had a friend in town from out of country.
Yep.
And she'd never been in a Ferrari.
So I know this gets better and better, right?
So I love that this is how you judge people.
Yeah.
This is like, have you ever been in a Ferrari?
Oh, you must come.
You must.
So, you know, very nice person, picked her up in the car.
So this is like a Friday afternoon in November?
No.
Sunday morning.
Sunday morning.
Like mid-November probably before Thanksgiving.
Okay.
So it's a nice sunny day, I'm assuming.
It's a perfect day.
Okay.
Perfect day.
Okay.
Malibu is not burned to the ground yet.
Yep.
I meet Nate, a bunch of other, you know, boring old men meet in the parking lot.
We talk about nothing, just like you love your favorite thing.
You know, all the cars are there.
Some of the people you go driving with.
Did you clean your car for this old man?
I did.
I did.
So I cleaned it.
Okay.
And this is key for later.
Filled it up with gasoline.
Yep.
Full tank.
Yep.
Which, you know, whatever, don't normally do because I wasn't driving it that much.
But made sure everything was fine, at least made it safe, right?
Yep.
And pick her up.
We drove to Country Mart.
Yep.
Had coffee.
I think it was normal, having a good time.
And of course, I have to push my luck.
And I say, oh, well, let's do the full Malibu experience.
Yes.
And so just going home, PCH, which would have been fine.
Let's go up Malibu Canyon to Mulholland.
We'll go to the old place.
Yep.
You know, you've never been.
It's kind of an historic thing.
And then we'll drive back down Canaan and go home.
No problem.
You're going to do the fun car roads.
Yeah.
Go to the fun little car cafe type of place up there.
You're going to show her Malibu car day.
Absolutely.
A Ferrari in Malibu.
I mean, I basically feel like Steve McQueen, right?
Yep.
In my mind.
So I'm driving.
Everything's going fine.
I'm not really going fast or anything.
I had a friend of mine behind me and another Ferrari because that's how I'm not just weird
being.
Yep.
And so which he'll come into the story again later.
We're driving up and, you know, the car's loud.
I can't hear anything.
Apparently my phone is ringing.
Didn't hear any of this.
Yep.
You're busy flirting.
I understand.
Yeah.
Go ahead.
Thanks for that.
That'll get me in trouble more than you know.
And yeah, and I didn't know this person.
I know this person very little.
Yep.
I think I've maybe met them once before.
It wasn't essentially a stranger.
Yep.
Well, I understand.
You go to bars.
You say, have you ever been in a Ferrari come this way?
I understand how your evenings work.
It was, yeah.
It worked in the morning too.
And so we're driving up and we're coming around.
I hadn't even made it to the old place.
Barely turned on to.
Mulholland.
Mulholland made that left.
Everything's fine.
Kind of sweeping through.
Do you know how there's that little spot where the guy takes photos?
Yeah, I do.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I had almost just got to there.
Okay.
And she was like, hey, is that normal?
And I glanced up to the movie mirror.
All fire.
Holy fire.
Oh, no.
Not just a little smoke.
No, it's a little smoke.
Full.
Like Nikki Lauda, full fire.
And I was like, get out of the car.
Get out of the car.
Yep.
Now, if you've never been in a 308 because they're Italian,
the latch to open the door.
Not intuitive.
Not intuitive.
It doesn't make any sense.
Right.
And I'm like, get out, get out.
And so we're trying to fiddle.
I'm reaching across and she's understandably panicked.
You're a hero.
You're a gentleman.
I saved a life.
Yeah.
Thankfully she, you know, she's Australian and not American.
She was very calm.
It was like, okay.
Yeah.
Right on.
No problems.
Yep.
We got out of the car.
My buddy behind me pulled up and his will stay a little further behind.
Sure.
And use the fire extinguisher.
Cause you know, they're like, oh, get a fire extinguisher under the seat.
That'll solve the problem.
Does nothing.
No, nothing.
The car was so on fire.
Yeah.
And here I am thinking, I'm going to set all of Malibu Canyon on fire.
Yeah.
You know, like, yes.
So we got clear of it.
And of course it's Sunday morning in Malibu.
Every guy, every car, every.
Every Porsche from 50 years.
Yeah.
Cows on it.
Yeah.
Pegasus or a stripe with their little driving gloves or whatever they've got going.
Little matching jackets.
Everybody's coming through.
Everyone's dry.
Do you need help?
Do you need?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Sure.
Yes.
Nobody stopped.
I mean, they took pictures.
Yeah.
They slowed down.
Don't get me wrong.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So car is, is, you know, call the fire department right away.
And they said, where are you?
Where are you?
And they got there.
So the, um, the ranger got there first would like.
So you just, you get on the phone, my car is on fire.
Yeah.
Like, okay, where are you?
And that's it.
Okay.
They're like, how bad is it?
I'm like, it's totally on fire.
Yeah.
And what's the instructions?
Like I'm just turned on a mole hauling from Canaan and made it like a couple of miles.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Um, and the ranger got there first, but he had like a little like pump hose.
Okay.
Yeah.
And I was like, mmm, and he couldn't the, so it was so hot because the, um, magnesium
caught on fire.
The, and it burns like white hot.
Yes.
And it was melting the car magnesium known for being flammable.
And it would look like, remember like Terminator two where he melts into the light.
Yeah.
And you could see it dripping and it was burning like white.
Yeah.
White hot.
I didn't mean you could feel the heat on the other side of the road.
So fire truck finally gets there.
Um, they put it out and they're like, well, it's burning so hot.
We're just going to make sure it's not.
Yeah.
And they said either you're, you know, you must live around here because you pulled over
into like rocks instead of doing what most people are doing and the brush.
Yeah.
And luckily I pulled over into like the kitty litter and the car just went up like a candle.
Um, totally burned.
Yeah.
Like you, you're, you look in the review mirror, there's already too many flames.
Yeah.
Right.
It's not a, it's already not a, I can fix this.
No.
So I got out and I got, what are you thinking?
Like, are you already thinking my car is gone?
Oh yeah.
I just had to get the passenger.
My thing was get the passenger.
Whoa.
Whoa.
Microphone.
Yeah.
Get the passenger out and just get to the side of the street because we've all seen people
who try and like save it and, um, my friend who was behind me, um, cause, uh, I got my
passenger out and then I grabbed the fire extinguisher.
Yeah.
Which is like four ounces.
They're tiny.
It's, it's stupid.
I don't even know why they recommend it.
I don't know what it would have put out, but we tried it and we were trying to spray it
underneath or he was, um, and, uh, it was just, it was just basically what had happened
is it started burning from underneath.
Okay.
But because I was driving, it was kind of just not obvious.
Yeah.
And as I slowed down for these curves, I think it just went.
So once it got enough gasoline, so it, it was by the time I got out of the car, it was
totally on fire.
Yeah.
Like video and like it was, it was not like.
Yeah.
Cause the short little gift that I saw is like already like that car is total.
Yeah.
Like, and it's the paint still looks good at this point.
Like it's just so many flames.
Like, no, that's not coming back from that and like, no, are you just in shock or you,
what are you feeling?
I was like, I can't, I can't believe this happening.
Yeah.
Like I just got new tires.
I just like literally, literally 30 days for previous.
By the way, they're great.
If you ever use zip tire, they're awesome.
They came, did my tires, they're awesome.
For the 30 days I had them, they were great.
I'd had a major service done the previous year.
Of course.
The car was running great.
Yep.
No, you know, no issues, no, no nothing.
Yep.
And just out of nowhere, just on fire.
Classic cars.
It burned like, wow, so fast.
Yeah.
I didn't think it would do that.
Like the interior just immediately gone.
It burned all the way past the spare tire through the front, all the whole entire thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think the most traumatic part was once everybody was gone.
Just all the Porsches left because of course they did.
That the tow truck comes and they have to call a special tow truck to like, because it's
when it's fire or some sort of.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And how they had to just drag it up there.
Yeah.
The noises.
And it was just the noise of just like, and they're like, do you want anything off of
it?
And it's like, if you went to the morgue to identify a body and then as soon as you identify
it, they just threw it in a tub.
There's like, well, there you go.
I think and I didn't really think about it much in the day and then it's gone.
Right.
And you're just dealing with and you got it.
And it was a holiday.
I think it was it's a veterans day.
It was a holiday weekend.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think it was.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So it was a holiday.
So I had to wait till like the Tuesday to call the insurance company.
And that just took longer.
And then that was a journey.
But yeah, everything like everything.
I can, I can hear you on the phone.
You know, hello.
Hello, Steve.
You know, what can I do for you today?
Oh, my car burned to the ground.
I can, I can hear you.
Yeah.
And they're like, what was it?
And I was like, oh, it's a Ferrari.
And they're like, oh, okay.
What happened?
I said, I was just driving and it caught on fire.
Yeah.
And they were like, okay.
So apparently in that situation, if you're driving and it catches on fire.
Yeah.
It's it's it's just a total.
That's it.
Like if it catches fire like stationary, they're like a little more suspicious, but
they're like, correct.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
They're like the odds of you driving and setting it on fire and taking a chance.
You know, at that point, we'll give you the money if you want it that bad.
Yeah.
So, um, yeah, I think.
Like seeing the tires burst.
That was.
Whoa.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So you see the those popped the brand new tires brand new tires popped and then to
see the magnesium melt and just go white hot.
Yeah.
And it burned.
Yeah.
Everything charred.
Is there a black mark in the road there?
I mean, I understand the entire all of Malibu is black now.
So yeah.
But yeah, they're still, they're still like melted area when you drive past them.
Oh man.
Yeah.
Okay.
And of course, like what actually happened?
Do we know?
Mm hmm.
So they did a like, I never saw the fire report.
Okay.
When I talk insurance company, they're like, they're like, it's probably just.
Yeah.
I mean, it's not, it's not like, it's not like a crime scene, right?
They're just like, here's your money.
It clearly was on fire move on.
Everyone moves on with their lives.
So we don't know what happened.
Okay.
The questions were, you know, was anybody injured?
No.
Did you hit anyone?
No.
Did you hit anything?
No.
Yeah.
And then they're like, okay, we don't care.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So.
Okay.
Yeah.
So that happens.
So you sit out there all day and then you get it towed away.
Yeah.
And then it just goes off and you got to answer a bunch of questions.
So yeah.
Um, calling insurance company, they go through the process.
They let you go and see it at the tow yard and they're like, do you want to grab something
off of it?
They dragged my precious 308 and like smashed it in between like some crappy Mercedes and
like a van and it was like pushed into a corner.
I was like, as if some like, no respect, giant King Kong had just thrown it into the, that
was hard.
That was hard.
And so I got my license plates and how do the license plates look?
They've got to be charred.
Uh, no, because it burned forward.
Yeah.
Okay.
So the rear plate was fine.
Yeah.
Interesting.
Okay.
So I got the, I got the owner's manual or the little booklet that everything came
in.
Yep.
Um, and I got the toolkit.
Okay.
That was about it.
Wow.
Um, but cause I was like wrapping leather so it survived.
I mean, it must have been like a fuel hose, right?
It must have been.
And I had so much fuel in that thing.
Cause you were running.
So the pump is running and then it dumps onto the hot exhaust goes up and it keeps running
and then by the time you turn up, you pull over everything's on fire and there's nothing
to be done.
Yeah.
Even though the pumps off, it's irrelevant.
Yeah.
Okay.
Wow.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, um, I didn't notice any change in performance of the car while I was driving it.
So slow to begin with, what's the difference if you lose the fuel?
Yeah.
So I was like, okay.
And uh, yeah.
So that was, that was, um, so the Ferrari is gone.
Um, they give you your first, um, whatever estimate, they're like, okay, we're going
to go, let's go see if we can repair it.
I was like, you're not going to repair it.
Get out of here.
And when I got to the toe yard, the, the, everybody was super nice at Geico, by the
way.
Quick shout out to them.
They were very kind.
Okay.
Um, they said that was the shortest time we've ever seen a insurance preacher coming.
He just walked in and it was like, shit.
Going to lunch.
He goes, you didn't even look at anything.
And, um, they're like, yeah, that's gone.
Um, and, and there wasn't even anything I could grab off of it.
I thought, oh, maybe I'll get some little, nothing.
It was all gone.
Yeah, gone, like burned, um, the engine, just yeah, nothing.
Yeah.
So, um, and, uh, so you get your first thing back and we learned when I worked at a
car dealership is that when you get the accident, there's always like three numbers.
So the first ones where they give you the next one, they give you a little bit more
and then the last ones offer you a hold out for.
Yeah.
So I knew I had to do that.
So I got the first number and I was like, okay, they were very fair.
Oh, they didn't come in at $5,000 for, no, it's a 1970.
This is worthless.
Yeah, they're very fair.
Um, and, uh, wait, you had the Ferrari through Geico.
You didn't have it through a classic car insurance.
I drive it too much.
I'm not like you that like, you know, keeps these things in trailers.
Well, you got to be a land baron.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All my garages like wrapped in plastic and.
Okay.
All right.
So you just head guy go.
All right, keep going.
And I'm too close to the ocean.
Yeah, you said.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So there's a weird tsunami table or something.
They won't let you ensure it's stupid.
Anyway, so the first number is fair, but not enough.
Yeah.
And they said, well, do you want to, uh, do you want to decline it?
And then you can get an appraiser.
Um, and I was, I never done that before.
I was like, sure.
And the guy, the guy who was the guy that was dealing with me, he goes, look, he
goes, if you decline it, which is, you can do whatever you want.
You're right.
Yeah.
Just know that it's going to take a while.
So that was in November.
Yeah.
Um, I said, okay, you know, and then the world got on fire and all this kind of
stuff and whatever.
Um, we finished up probably mid January.
Yeah.
Roughly.
Yeah.
And what I had to do is I got an appraiser.
Um, yeah, because I saw, you know, basically what happened on my side is I
get the same text message from a couple of people with an Instagram link.
And everyone's like, is this Steve?
Because they know you and I are best friends and that I'll have the down low.
Yeah.
So they sent this in.
And I see a black Ferrari on fire.
And I'm like, I have no idea.
I don't talk to that guy anymore.
We don't do the podcast.
Exactly.
Yeah.
It's like, no, why would, and he would have never brought it up anyway.
Yeah.
And, um, I am sure, and a couple of people confirm, like, no, it is Steve.
I'm like, okay.
Well, I know he's getting the same text message from everyone.
I'm not going to send him any, like, he doesn't want to hear from this.
So I waited several weeks or at least, at least a week.
And then I reached out and all I asked you was, do you want a pod about it?
Yeah.
Do you want to talk about this thing live?
Yeah.
Um, and to your credit, you said, yes, but we got it.
I got to do the insurance, which makes sense.
Like, you don't want to say anything publicly.
Um, and that's kind of what we've been waiting for.
Yeah.
Um, so I, I'm going to give a quick shout out to Neil Thomas, the car appraiser.
Okay.
I was put in contact with him and he was great.
So if you ever have a classic car that's, uh, in dispute, use him and he was able to,
I won't go into numbers, but he got me additional, probably, um, I'd say, let's do 15K over
what they were going to give me.
And is, is, did he work on a percentage basis or a flat fee?
Well, he worked on a flat fee, worked on a flat fee.
Okay.
Um, but it was worth it to have him.
100% because he knows how the process worked very knowledgeable.
And he was like, here's what's going to happen because with the insurance company
does, which is what's funny is they're like, okay, you got your appraiser.
Let him send his document in, which is also interesting when you see the comps that
they get for your car.
Yeah.
Um, with who Geico gets it through the appraiser gets who the appraiser gives.
Okay.
So then Geico hires.
It's all like gooding in company and like the best.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, and for our listeners, both of them, uh, keep all your receipts.
If you got car work done, unless it's done by Adam, keep your receipts.
I don't give receipts.
It's all cash under the table.
And it does help to go to a reputable mechanic.
If you, especially if you have an exotic car, if you go to a place that's known
for working on those cars, um, it does help.
So I had all my receipts.
I had all my stuff.
I had everything.
Yep.
Um, the insurance company hires an appraiser.
So that takes a couple of weeks.
Yep.
The two appraisers come together and then I have to pay for an umpire.
No, the decision between those two.
No, I thought you'd like that because I thought that would be a great job for you.
Oh, I could do that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I have to pay for that guy, which would be, um, yeah.
Oh, what's that called?
So it's not court.
It's, uh, I don't know.
It's not the same of, you know, all those legal documents you sign now,
like you agree that we're not going to go to court.
We're going to go to arbitration arbitration.
Was it an arbitrator?
Like, um, like they called them an umpire.
That was what they literally called it an umpire.
Yeah.
Oh, so they're not certified or anything.
It's not, they didn't go to law school.
Okay.
It's just, it was very interesting.
And it was like, okay, here's ours.
Here's yours.
Now this guy who I never got to meet.
Oh, no, I did get his name.
Um, but he only took, he only took checks.
Like, I mean, just very kind of like, exactly the kind of guy you would imagine.
You're like, it's made out to cash.
Yeah.
He got, you know, probably got several hundred dollars or just being like, yeah,
let's average these two numbers together.
Yeah, exactly.
Let's just split the baby and move on.
I got three more of these to do this hour.
So you get that number and then they're like, this is where rat.
And so you're like, okay.
And, uh, and it worked out, it worked out very well.
Cool.
Okay.
So now you got a fat check.
Mm hmm.
Mm hmm.
So portion on 11 is in the cards.
You can finally afford to join me.
I feel like that would be a step back is the problem.
Um, so I did.
So, so here's part of it is that when I got my three or eight, it was at a certain price.
And it was kind of a good idea.
There was some room in it to kind of make some money off of it eventually or something.
Yeah.
That's no longer the case.
Nope.
My beloved three or eights are now like to replace my car is probably a,
what, I mean, 30 whole grand probably.
At least, at least, um, is, is much more.
Or sizable trunk than what it once was.
The car market is crazy.
So, yeah.
And so, uh, it's harder to rationalize getting one of these cars.
Sure.
When you're like, well, now that becomes like real car money.
Yeah.
So if you're spending that kind of money, do you get a 360, which is like a real car?
Ooh, yeah.
Yeah.
No longer tube frame chassis, like, yeah, this is an actual car.
Okay.
Yeah, a car that works.
Yeah.
Um, you know, so those, those are the options you start.
There's other stuff out there.
You can go 355.
You can go, you know, um, all Ferrari so far, but okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, it's got to be a Ferrari.
I mean, what are you going to do?
I'm not going to go backwards.
Yeah.
I'm not going to change my personality.
I don't even have one.
Yeah.
You've got the hat.
You've got the vest.
You've got the, exactly.
I got the shoes.
I got the key chain.
The whole thing.
Yeah.
You can't change now.
No, no.
So, um, yeah, if, if anybody's got an idea of, of, you know, the next
three or eight, okay, it's got to have a prancing horse.
I think so.
Cause I mean, what, what would you really get?
I'm not going to get like one of your little Volkswagen's.
I can't, I mean, there's nothing, there's nothing really.
And I'd probably stay in the seventies.
Oh, okay.
All right.
I mean, Pantara, something you want something really weird.
I've driven one of those and they're terrible.
Yeah.
I can't do it.
Yeah, I'm sure they are.
Yeah.
I wanted to believe, but they're terrible.
Yeah.
Cause I see you as like a modern Maybach guy.
I see you, something very luxurious.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, let's look, let's be honest, Steve, you're built for comfort, not for
speed.
And that's true.
That's what Maybach is all about.
I will say, I'm glad I got the Ferrari when I can get in that of it.
It'll longer be the case.
You know, that's something to think about.
Well, it's a good thing Ferrari now has the SUV, the Porosong way.
You know, you could probably afford a quarter of that right now.
So, you know, start making payments.
I mean, if, if you think of like, yeah, I don't know.
I don't know what would, what would be the same.
Probably seventies.
Well, I mean, if you're, you're sticking with seventies, you're not getting
what you said, three, six, no, I mean, I could do, I could, I mean, you start
getting into all sorts of cars.
Like, what's the next logical leap after three or eight?
I don't know.
Do you get a 348, but they're terrible.
355, I can't afford the maintenance.
Yeah.
Three sixties, like a real Ferrari.
Yeah.
I'd be terrified to drive it anywhere.
And then, you know, and then you get a fourth.
I mean, all of a sudden you're up into a lot of, a lot of car.
Yeah.
I guess, I mean, the four or five eighths, everyone is still kind of going
gaga over.
Those are still expensive cars.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think they are.
And I think they're going to continue to be, but okay.
Well, all right.
Listeners, you can revive our long dead Instagram and give ideas for what
Steve should get next.
Yeah.
Get those ideas into where we can get a 308, either replacement or a recommendation.
Yep.
And it, it has been so long since Steve and I talked.
We are already talking about the next episode.
So we can circle back with all the terrible ideas we've heard.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm sure people have ideas.
So there's got to be, you know, there's got to be something out there.
What should Steve do next?
This could be a whole series.
We could drag this out for six months.
Yes.
About what you're going to get next.
And the listeners would love that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We could go on your test drives with you.
Uh-huh.
Maybe be there while you negotiate or fails and negotiate something.
That's going to be fun.
Where would, I mean, yeah, where would you, I don't even know where to start.
Yeah.
So, um, because I got my last one out of the forums.
I got the black one out of the forums.
Yeah.
Um, I haven't seen a, well, I, I would start where I start every day,
which is the bowels of Craigslist.
See what the weird stuff I could find for my day.
Yeah.
Um, I haven't seen a black GTB yet.
Yeah.
I've, I've, I've scoured the.
That was another question is, do you, do you want to do the standard
Ferrari red, your car was black.
Do you purposefully want a different color than red?
I thought it would be fun to go, uh, GTS version.
So no roof.
Yep.
Add a little different experience.
It, you can put the dog in there.
Yep.
He'll fit in there.
Um, and then maybe do like silver or white.
Yeah.
Okay.
So you do not want red.
You like, you like the odd color.
I mean, you could do a red one.
I feel like, listen, I mean, as you well know, I, as a, as a ground rule,
I hate all Ferrari owners.
You guys are all terrible.
That's why, yeah.
But I, anyone who has a Ferrari not in red, I respect more.
I know, I know.
Like, okay.
No, I remember that.
Yeah.
No, um, I did look at a yellow one.
Yeah.
That's a bold choice.
It is full midlife crisis.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, I've seen a yellow one, a white one, it's not a blue one, pre blue one.
So you're not gun shy over a second one, possibly burning to the ground.
You're ready to dive back in to the same 308 madness.
What are the odds of it happening twice?
Probably around 60%.
And I feel like the way my car died, that's the closest I'll ever get to being
like Nikki Lauda, like it was, it was, that was my moment.
I mean, it was pretty exciting.
Yeah.
Like, for all, I mean, I could have driven off a cliff.
I could have rear ended someone.
I could have just clashed it.
Yep.
I've done a lot of dumb things in that car.
And what a way to go.
I mean, maybe that's the end of the 308 story.
And I just live the Land Rover life and, and, and, and yeah.
And you, you tell everyone, well, back in the day, I had a Ferrari.
Yeah, I could see you do it.
I've already done that.
Yeah.
I saw a guy at a gas station with one.
I was like, oh, man, I used to have one of those.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
And that's happening already.
I believe it.
I believe it.
You know, your bar visits will never be the same.
I mean, so much gin stories.
It's just like gather around.
Yeah.
So, um, but, uh, yeah, it's, it's, and it's interesting because I've had
questions from like all around, all around the world.
Cause that stupid Instagram account, they're like, oh my gosh, did it,
yeah, did it burn?
Cause I didn't post anything, but I had a bunch of people.
And so, um, yeah, people actually cared about the car.
Nobody asked if I got out.
No, it asks, are you okay?
No.
And, uh, so nobody asked about that.
Um, but yeah.
So, uh, have you ever been in a car that's on fire?
Never.
No, it's an experience like fire is an early thing.
Yeah, it is.
Yeah.
And it really, it wasn't a mess and about.
Um, it was the, uh, it's like the, the, that gas fire where it's just kind of
invisible and then it catches.
I've done enough stupid things with fire to know that it gets out of control
alarmingly quickly.
And then you just a spectator.
So it was, um, coming out of the, uh, I guess the slats of the vents of the
deck lid, yeah, and then it already made its way up to, um, passenger windows.
Geez.
Like it had, it had gone up.
Yeah.
Oh man.
Cause I took a picture of like a video of it when I got out.
Yeah.
Just as I like walk past.
Um, and it was already, yeah, yeah.
Cause I was, I was trying stupidly cause I'm an idiot to get the deck lid open and
be like, Oh, maybe I can save this or something.
Oh, that's a great way to get the burn.
So, um, yeah, yeah.
It was, uh, it was an experience.
So anyway, that's my fire story in the midst of tragedy in LA.
I think I felt left out.
So I wanted to steal a little glory.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, like we said, to be fair, you had your fire first.
I did start the trend to be a visionary early, early adopter trend setter.
Yeah.
And then all these Johnny come lately is burning down their house.
I mean, can you imagine if it's set that like Malibu Lake area on fire?
I would have had so much respect for you.
If you had burned down, had to leave town, county, if it would have been you.
I'm like, Oh yeah, I know that.
Can you imagine?
Oh my goodness.
And then the firemen would have had a field day with like Ferrari owner burns
down Malibu.
I wouldn't have been mentioned.
It would have been like for our owner.
Correct.
And then, yeah, it would not have been.
Yeah, I was like, Oh man.
Yeah.
I don't know what I would have.
I would have just left the scene, I guess.
Did you, did you honestly think about that when you pulled over under the
gravel of like, no, don't stop there, don't stop there.
Yes, stop there.
Or did you just first shoulder, I'm off.
I had a, I had a feeling for a second where I was like, okay, I don't
actually don't know what to do.
Yeah, of course.
Because we've never been in this situation.
Yeah.
And then I was just like, well, let me, I wanted a patch where I could
like, just get like, to stop the car, like something, something big enough.
Which is not easy on that road.
No, I was in a very lucky area that I was.
Yeah, it's all cliff sides there.
There's a few places where you can pull over.
And that's it.
So it was just a big rock face next to it.
So it just burned the whole side of that.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I just got really lucky.
But I can't believe my voodoo doll actually worked.
I know.
I had a lot of people say that.
Yeah.
My little Ferrari voodoo doll that I've had.
I just can't believe it.
Yeah.
I got messages from mechanics and they're like, no, they're like, so.
But I put probably 40,000 miles on that car.
Nice.
All right.
So I did, I did get a good run, a good run out of it.
Well done.
And lots of adventures and lots of, lots of trips to Monterey and back.
Yep.
And so, yeah.
Now you're going to be in a Hyundai.
That's pretty cool.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's tough.
Oh, so I did get, because they give you a rental.
Yep.
Like you need a rental.
I was like, sure.
And I got a.
Yeah, they're paying for it.
So sure.
Give me another car.
I got a Mitsubishi, what's the small?
I didn't even know Mitsubishi still made cars.
Yeah, what is it?
It's not the Colt.
It's the, I don't know, it's tiny.
Yeah, the little guy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It was terrible, but you know, just worked on my like handbrake turns.
And yeah, so I did that for like three days and I was like, this is dumb.
I was like, I can't put the dog in here.
Yeah.
No, you can't put anything in there.
No, so what is it?
I don't know what this is.
I don't know what it was.
It was, it was, uh, yeah, it was, you know, they don't even, I don't think
they have it anymore because they all they have is SUVs.
But I know what you're talking about.
It is tiny garage.
Yeah, there you go.
Mitsubishi garage.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was, it was what a piece, but yeah, because I went in there and they see when
you go to enterprise, they see, oh, you had a Ferrari and he's like, oh, man.
He goes, I got a Porsche, I got a SMR.
I was like, just I don't, I don't need.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I drove out of there into the turquoise Mitsubishi and he was like,
all right, yeah, yeah.
So yeah, it's funny.
Hey, but at least the Mitsubishi had cup holders.
Like that's an upgrade.
It did.
You know, it worked.
It didn't catch fire.
So that's a win.
So there we go.
Yeah.
Um, wow.
Okay.
So we got a, we got to figure out what you're getting next and obviously
whatever the podcast decides, uh, you will abide by that's a legally binding statement.
So, um, I mean, let's, let's see what people come up with.
I don't think anybody's going to send in any suggestions, but.
Um, I think there'll be 10 bad ideas from the car club and then, you know, Nate will
say I'm a staying and of course he will.
Yeah.
Of course he will.
And that'll, that'll be about it.
I think, yeah, but we'll see.
I'm open to ideas.
What I was, somebody's got something sitting in a garage and they're like, here it is.
Yeah.
Here's, here's a white three or eight we haven't been working on.
Yeah.
Maybe, um, I mean, Warren's just went up in value technically.
Technically there are fewer.
He gives me, yeah, yeah.
Wow.
I don't know if I told him or not.
I think you, I think he texted me.
I think you figured it out.
Yeah.
Everybody knows, don't worry.
All of Los Angeles knows that you lost your personality.
It's gone.
Forgot how much I hate you.
Warren actually drove his Ferrari today.
I was shocked because, oh my God, it's supposed to rain sometime in the next seven days.
And I thought it was full hermetically sealed, but he drove it today.
So, wow.
Okay.
Whatever.
Okay.
Whatever.
Yeah.
We did up my, our little car club did a go karting day today.
Oh, nice.
So, yeah, I've got some big news on my side that's actually positive.
Are you gonna, are you gonna, are you gonna one up me after my big loss?
To be the yin to your yang.
Yes, I'm gonna, I'm happy to announce that the Wanderwell Society, our little
club is opening up a garage in about 30 days from now on April 1st.
We're going to open up a, like a DIY garage with like a lounge on like a car
cleaning area in the Venice neighborhood.
And we're very excited about this.
So we, is it going to have all your shit boxes in it or will there be room for
other people to do stuff?
There is going to be room for other people to show up like once a week.
I'll let them in.
Okay.
But we're going to have a lift.
We're going to have tools you can borrow.
You can do all the stuff you want to do on your car and stay on our couches in the
meantime.
Who else lost a bet and has to do this with you?
Are there, is there other people involved?
The whole community came together.
We're doing this together.
Really excited.
Like we all kind of pulled money together and got the lease and it's going to be,
we're all chipping in tools to do this.
So we're really excited and we're, we're 30 days out from opening up.
So you'll have to be there for the ribbon cutting.
Yeah.
You're a local celebrity.
So I'd love it if you'd open up for us.
Okay.
I'll show up in my Mitsubishi Mirage.
So yeah, you've, you've been stuck in Malibu and not able to mistake escape.
Excuse me.
And I, neither way.
Um, and I've just been like heads down, doing like all the legal work and getting
insurance and doing all that stuff and kicking this off.
So I kind of disappeared as well.
Um, so.
So Venice, I mean, it's got to, is it, are we allowed to know where it is?
Or is it just not yet?
I mean, I expect to sign the lease tomorrow, but we've negotiated all the terms.
It's where we're in agreement.
Um, for anyone in Los Angeles area, it's on Lincoln Boulevard between
Venice and Washington.
So prime real estate.
I was going to say that seems quite nice.
Well, I am very rich.
So, you know, we can get a nice, we can get a nice spot.
That's true.
Yeah.
Okay.
Honestly, the, the really hard part in the real estate game is it is very
difficult to find a place that will let you do automotive work.
Yes.
It's just so messy.
Yeah.
And it destroys when you do it.
Exactly.
And it destroys properties.
So like finding that is not easy.
Um, but we also, because we're kind of figuring this out in most real estate,
a commercial real estate, they're three to five year leases.
It's a three to five year commitment.
And a lot of people don't know this, but you have to personally sign the
guarantee that you're going to pay five years worth of this very exorbitant
rent.
And you'll be like 67 by then.
Yeah.
So my social security is not going to cover that rent.
So what we found, uh, was a six month lease to why we figure out what this
business is and then after six months or so, maybe a little bit afterwards,
we'll move into a bigger facility somewhere else that's more permanent.
Um, but finding like a six month lease was not easy.
That was the hardest thing.
It took us like three months to find a place.
Uh, but one, it's got a great location and we're going to be opening up in
about a month.
So I hope everyone comes by it.
We're doing memberships.
Like if you want to work on your car, you got to be a member of the club.
Um, for that, you know, we'll give you snacks.
Don't worry.
Free snacks.
Um, and yeah, that's it.
All right.
So it's, it's going to be the wander well society workshop.
It's the workshop.
You just call it the shop.
Okay.
I'm at the shop doing that.
But yeah, cause the water well society does the drives and like go carting
and stuff like that today.
So the workshop is where you do a DIY stuff.
Okay.
Yeah.
Um, that's exciting.
Yeah.
Um, can we share any details or like how many lifts or what, what, what,
what's the dream six months from now?
Well, I mean, just again, to start off small and to kind of limit everyone's
risk, we're just doing one lift.
So it's a three bay facility.
So bay number one is going to be like car cleaning stuff.
Okay.
I have found, I don't subscribe to this.
I don't care at all, but people like to clean their cars.
Yeah.
I don't get it.
That usually comes with people that have running vehicles.
Oh, how dare you?
Not one of your fetishes.
So I don't get it.
Cause, you know, as I say, dirt, dirt doesn't slow you down.
So I don't care how dirty my car is, but I have friends that like wash
their car multiple times a week and have all sorts of detailing products.
And that's like a whole subculture that people really care about.
So we're going to have a whole bay for those people, all the car
cleaning stuff you could want to detail your car.
So it's bay number one, bay number two is the lift with the tools.
And then bay number three is going to be the couches and lounge.
And so during this six months, we're going to find out like nobody cares
about couches or nobody cares about car cleaning.
We need three lifts.
We're going to see what we need.
But I think the lift is going to fill up really quickly.
And we're okay with that.
Like we realized that's kind of our choke point and we'll see how many
should we get, but you know, a lot of these DIY garages fail, I think
because they get a big facility thinking they need to have five lifts
and the rent is just so much.
So we're going to scale slowly towards the end of that six months.
I'm sure the calendar is going to be a little uncomfortable with people
trying to get in and they can't.
There's going to be some growing pains, but then we'll know what
we need to do and how many lifts we want.
So we'll see.
Is there going to be a way that I'll know who's going to be working
on their car that week so I can come to the lounge and laugh?
Definitely.
Is there is there like a lounge?
I think there's like daily updates.
Like here's what's happening today and on the lift calendar, when it gets busy,
I think we're going to have to vote as a community like, Hey, Steve wants
to do new wheels, but Brett wants to do an intake.
Who should win?
Yeah.
And you better be, you better be popular.
You know, let's see, you better have some friends.
I think if you start having timed events, I feel like there's something.
I mean, yeah, yeah, because I, I, I would never let you touch my car.
But I enjoy going to the oil change nights for the possibility of failure.
Correct.
Everyone likes the laugh at everyone else's failures.
And I think that's a big part.
That's where the lounge is right there where you can just stare.
But like, you're doing that wrong.
You're doing that wrong.
Is there a way to volunteer for that role?
Like MC, like if we just like, that's fine.
Color commentary.
Yeah, I feel like, I feel like that might be for me.
So yeah, we're, we're, we're bringing on memberships now before we open to kind
of see where we're going to be at, but it's going to be good.
Okay.
So six months for sure.
Yep.
And then when it goes huge, you're going to expand.
Correct.
Okay.
All that cheap real estate in Malibu now, the ground will probably move over there.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, there's, um, there's some interesting things for sure.
Yeah.
Um, yeah.
If you take a look in, uh, yeah, Agora and, uh, San Clarita and some stuff out there.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Pasadena.
Um, okay.
All right.
Well, that sounds unusually successful, which is not really your style.
It is not.
I feel uncomfortable with it.
And I don't know.
Nor is it the best in class pod podcast style.
Well, we haven't opened the doors yet.
There's still plenty of time for me to fail.
So don't you worry.
All right.
Don't you worry.
Um, and then all the, all the tools stolen because I didn't put in an alarm system and
someone's going to drop a car on themselves and I'll get sued into
destitution, best case scenario.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Are you going to set up like a time lapse or something?
And there's got to be some sort of recording device or something.
I think, I think there's a webcam.
Yeah.
Because I want to know that, oh, that guy's deal.
I got to go and heckle.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think there's a webcam.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
Just so you can laugh at people and be like, Oh, that's that guy's back again.
I can't believe it.
Yeah.
I think there's something.
I feel like that's, that's, yeah, that'd be good.
I think people enjoy that when they work on their car to be scrutinized.
Correct.
You're like, that's the missing part of working on your car.
I mean, it's worked really well for oil change night is like people understand
like, and it makes you come a little more correct because you know, people are
saying, okay, I got to be ready.
Yeah.
So yeah.
And it's just part of our community of just like, we're going to make fun of you.
We'll help you clean up afterwards, but we're going to make fun of you for a while.
Yeah.
But it creates a bond.
I think that's what we're missing nowadays.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So we're all on our phones, not near each other.
So yeah, correct.
So yeah, are you going to have, um, don't worry, don't worry, we'll have snacks.
And I know you, I know you want there to be food.
I got to keep my weight up.
I don't want to be just in a way.
I don't have to fit in a far anymore.
Game on.
So yeah, that is the update on the car situation.
Yeah.
Uh, Land Rover is running.
Land Rover is running.
We have had some trips to the dealer.
Um, of course.
Yeah.
It's still under warranty.
So it had its regular service due, which is fine.
Yep.
Um, it needed breaks, which going up and down Canaan all the time, makes sense.
But the dealer being the dealer, and they've been very good about it, but they, um, I
think stripped one of the hubs when they were replacing, yeah, yeah, not good.
I don't know if you've ever done that.
And then driven the car, not super great, not super great.
So I see when you go back to them and say there's something wrong and they're
like, I don't hear anything.
I was like, okay, had to go back again when it got really bad and basically like
you drive into the dealership and the entire dealership can hear it.
Um, they gave me, my first loaner was, um, a forerunner.
They just sent me to enterprise and like, uh, you had a forerunner.
I was like, okay, whatever.
Fine.
Um, and then, you know, uh, did it feel weird to be in a really reliable car?
I don't, I didn't really get reliable from it.
From the Toyota.
How dare you?
Yeah.
No, it wasn't, it just, it just, I felt like I was like a history teacher or something.
Yeah.
Like I felt like, yeah, I felt like I could have just tried a little harder.
Um, I will say due to me living in the woods in the land Rover for 30 days,
cause I had no power.
Um, the forerunner has, uh, a full plug in the back.
Yep.
So, uh, during my 30 days of no power, I had to use the land Rover to charge my
phone and my laptop and I had to get a whole series.
I'm amazed I didn't set that car in fire.
Uh, I had a whole series of plugs and adapters and then to make that work.
Um, but the forerunner's got a little handy one in the back.
So that would have come in.
Yeah.
They're thinking, they're thinking, but again, uh, it's a hatchback tailgate.
So it goes up, can't do that with a dog.
Doesn't work.
Yep.
So, so the barn door, the land Rover still wins.
Yeah.
Um, yeah.
So, yeah, I'm going to keep it for a little bit longer.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, all my cars are running much to disappoint you.
Uh, nothing is broken down.
Nothing is on fire.
Everything's running great.
Yeah.
I only have one now.
It's so freeing.
I don't have to worry about anything.
I'm kind of excited for like, you know, natural disaster.
I'm like, I understand that everyone else lives this way of, you know, I have one
vehicle, but in the car world, in our hobby,
you're now that weirdo that just wears a black t-shirt every day.
Yeah.
Oh, I don't have to think about it.
I just go to my closet.
You're that weirdo now.
Yeah, I am.
In the car world.
I'm glad it's the t-shirt that made me weird.
I thought you're going to take that somewhere else.
Nope, I'm stopping there.
But yeah, no, it's, it's, uh, now, now I don't.
You just grab one set of keys.
You go to one garage.
You go.
No worries.
Yep.
I don't have to go to cars and coffee anymore.
Oh, thank God.
You know, I don't have to, I don't have to do all that.
Um, so yeah, I mean, it's a huge time saver.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, no one talks to me, but no, I'm really, you know, I don't get as many,
you know, young children or old men talking to me.
So that's, you know, plus minus depending on how you look at it.
Yep.
Yep.
Um, so yeah, yeah, but I definitely now I don't have it.
I see them everywhere.
Yeah.
Gas station on PCH, just park somewhere.
And then of course, you know, the internet is sending me nonstop links to every car
that exists.
Yep.
Um, the guy that I bought mine from saw the internet posting of it being on fire.
Yeah.
And it was like, is that your car?
And I was like, yeah, he's like, don't worry, I got another one.
So it was pretty funny.
Yeah, I hadn't talked to him since really I bought the car from him.
Yeah, of course.
And he was like, yeah, he goes, I see the car all over Instagram and everything.
And yeah.
And so he was like, I wonder how it was going.
He's like, obviously not super well.
Yep.
And so yeah, he had one.
So yeah.
And now they're all over bring a trailer.
I feel like there's a three or eight on bring a trailer every 10 days.
The world is conspiring to let you make this mistake again.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Now you got to get something different.
You got to get something.
Most people are saying they're like, you've done your three or eight.
It won't, nothing will be the same as that car.
It will just not be the same.
Yeah, it'll be better.
I don't know.
But what do you mean?
It's tough.
It's tough.
Once you've driven the best car there was.
What do you do?
Well, you did drive my car.
That's true.
I don't know.
That's that's tough.
Driving your car made me realize how much I made the right choice.
So reliable and powerful and fun.
Yeah, you don't want those things.
No, where's the risk?
Where's the risk?
Well, cars are never going to catch on fire.
You took the risk way too far.
Well, you know, we all live different ways.
Yeah, you know, you don't know where the edge is until you've gone over it.
I have to say, being in a car on fire is is it's a it's a thing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, it's clearly scargy.
Like you've got a whole new look here that people can't see.
Like you're a different man.
Are you meditating every day now and like brushing your teeth?
Yeah, I'm doing like that bulletproof coffee.
And yeah, I've got like seven other podcasts about efficiency.
I've been I've been doing all sorts of stuff.
Yeah, yeah, I believe it.
Yeah, I'm going to get into like getting in tiptoeing into tarot.
Yeah, a little bit of that.
And yeah, yeah, I get back into hiking, you know, doing that stuff.
So yeah, so it burned mid November.
Yeah, kind of in shock over that mid December, Franklin fire.
Yeah, we lost power.
I'm outside holidays.
And then it was everything was on fire, high winds, because every time
the wind picked up, they turned the power off.
Yeah. So you had like, I just had no power all the time.
It would you'd be working.
It would just go out.
Yeah. And so, yeah, it was it's been pretty wild.
It's only just now started to come back to normal.
Well, well, yeah, whatever that is.
Yeah, yeah, so and now you're doing a podcast again.
So it's happening.
Things are looking up.
It's 2025. We're back.
We're at 151.
We got we got what?
Diego coming up on Diego.
Diego, little sneak peek is currently shopping for a new car
and he wants our expert advice.
So we're going to again, save the car community and help him out.
Yes, correct. We got that coming.
Yeah, we're now we're going to get a weekly
or monthly adventure update from your garage when that opens.
Correct. So we got a lot of exciting stuff.
Yeah, it's it's good.
I'm glad we took a break, but I'm happy to be back.
Yes. Well, Steve, I am glad you didn't die in your coffin of a car.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, that would that would have been because then you would have been
like fun to me if I died, you that would have been bad.
Yeah, you don't know me well enough.
I would have, you know, what was funny is that I would have gone to your
funeral in a clown suit. Yeah.
And I was I was I was burning.
I was like, what am I going to do about the dog?
Because I was the only thing where I was like, oh, man, if I.
Yeah, what would happen to the dog?
Wow. What a good dad you are.
Yeah, I know. Well, now it's just me and the dog.
Like the Ferrari's gone.
It's like, all right, what are we doing?
So he doesn't miss the car.
He didn't give a shit.
No, no, no, no cares.
No. Yeah.
And a lot of people were like, oh, did you have a Ferrari?
And I was like, never mind.
It's not even we're not even talking about it.
Yeah. Well, yeah. So.
All right, Steve.
All right, we're going to come back and we're going to talk about Diego's new cars.
I will never mention the Ferrari ever again.
It's dead to me. Yeah.
That's it until I get another one until I get another one.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
I might just I might just go red just to choose for you.
Let us choose for you.
Do you think I should provide links and then you know what car is easy to get in and out of?
A minivan. Delorean.
No, it's from the 70s, 80s, whatever.
Terrible. Terrible.
That's a horrible car.
Yeah, I know, but you're a horrible person.
What's the difference? That's true. That's true. Yeah.
Yeah, I don't know.
You love attention.
You got the Ferrari because it was on TV.
What's better than TV movies? Movie.
Now I have to get a movie car.
Yes, I think you have to.
OK, that makes too much sense on that bombshell.
You see, I'm glad you're safe.
I'm glad you don't have third degree burns all of your hands.
Yeah. Yeah. Thank you.
Let's talk again soon.
I appreciate you waiting a week to reach out.
That was nice. Yep.
And good to see you.
And I'm excited to get back into this and see you next time.
All right, sir. Goodbye.
