Welcome to Driving While Awesome.
My name is Warren.
I'm Lane and I'm Art.
All right.
It's the rally recap and more.
Of course, we're not just going to talk rally, but hell yeah, we got stuff
going down, going on.
Dude, I'm doing a whole.
This is the first time I've done this with using wireless headphones
and this setup we got going on because we're all remote today.
Yeah.
Yeah.
How's it working?
I think it's working, dude.
You guys can actually hear me.
I was afraid when I like set it up.
I was like, oh shit, do these things even have a microphone?
Oh, right, right.
Because it's going on headset as well.
Yeah.
It's just like these nothing.
Well, you could be like someone cool at Haggerty and have a, you know.
Oh, is that how Haggerty rolls?
Some people, they're pretty much a Haggerty.
I shouldn't say just a Haggerty, but like sponsors and stuff that we talk to.
There's guys that rock like the video game headset.
Oh yeah, those are cool, dude.
It's pretty cool.
I could see you in that lane.
Oh, okay.
Thanks, dude.
Yeah, that really, you really think highly of me.
I mean, I can see I'm in like a pink, like a cam girl, brocaro seat too.
Like, you know, like the, that's like a thing or the twitch, twitch girl.
I should say not cam girl, cam girl, cam girl, huh?
Yeah, whatever those things are.
I don't know anything about those things.
Okay.
Dude, well, here we are.
I know, uh, we haven't really talked much since the rally ended.
Um, but we all made it home, obviously.
Some earlier than others.
Obviously, dude, that's true.
Art ditched us once again, but, um, I will say that, uh, that was an awesome rally.
It was really a really great rally.
It was fun, fun group.
Everyone had a good time and no big incidents, uh, especially, you know,
there's always going to be some little breakdowns and, and needs from these cars,
especially some old ones.
I saw plenty of hoods up.
We'll get no toes, dude.
I was going to say no toes crazy.
And it was a big rally dude.
It was 80 ish cars, yeah, 100 people, yeah, and extreme rally.
It wasn't rain, a lot of elevation, right?
So you're dealing with like putting the car under a ton of load and, uh, over
8,000 feet, 9,000 feet, several times and yeah, then rain and, and some sun,
uh, all that and sun.
Imagine that's so crazy.
Melty, so crazy.
Yeah.
I think I was, I, I, I mentioned it, you know, a couple of times to people as I
was like walking around, um, after I think I was on Saturday, I was just saying,
like, you know, I'm genuinely like proud of the group.
Like it's just, it just shows like that we have a great group of people.
I know we do some vetting and you know, there's people apply and like historically
it's a certain type of person that will be applying to be involved in this type
of event.
Um, and I think with word of mouth over the years and, you know, listening to
what we're, people are up against.
Like they know it's like, you know, this is a driving event.
This isn't a cruise, um, you know, on along the coast, uh, and going to eat oysters.
You know, like we're, we're, we're driving our cars and really technical
fun roads and the fact that we had weather on some of these roads that are
very serious, like double black diamond roads and people like, you know, figured
out that they know their abilities, their vehicles, capabilities, and they were
able to drive when I saw multiple different groups, came upon different
groups and you know, everyone, everyone finds their place and they just
chill and they're having a good time.
It was, it was great.
It was great to see.
I think, I think another big part of it too is that we've, we went from like in
the early days, two people had a radio and then like six people had radios.
And now it's like pretty much a majority have a radio and maybe they're not
using them a lot, but, uh, having someone be able to call out like, Hey,
there's a water truck coming down the road here, like heads up.
And even if you just hear that, now it's like in your mind, like it might not
be our group, but at least I know, like somewhere there's, there's an obstacle
here and then it's so great for pulling, like for turnouts and, uh, stopping
and, and like regrouping and stuff, um, chatting about little stuff on the road
and stuff is really, really helpful.
And I think that does help like the safety angle too.
So you're pretty good at calling stuff out Warren.
I'm not, but, um, I need to find a, we were just talking about phone mounts
before we started, I need to find a better radio mount because that's my issue.
So I did that on this rally.
I went through the fricking trouble to buy a backseat organizer.
You know, they come in all different shapes and sizes.
This one looks more like one of those rucksack, like military style has
like a bunch of loops you can like hook stuff on the seat or what?
So it connects to the headrest rails and then the bottom, the base of the seat.
It's just like a, you know, buckle system and you can, uh, like I said,
they come in all different types.
Some have like full on like, you know, iPad holders and all sorts of crap.
Yeah, they're, they're cheap, but then it allowed for the radio to then go
in the back of the passenger seat right there.
And then I bought an external mic handheld.
Oh, that's nice piece for the radio.
Now, I guess we can just get into it.
Radio wise, um, the radios, the radios that I have, which are the same brand
as everyone's using for whatever reason, the frequency that our good friend,
Matt hushy pushy decided to go with and broadcast.
They would not communicate on that.
I could hear messages, but I couldn't send out and I'm sure there's a radio
person right now going, it's because he didn't do the thing, but, uh,
we couldn't figure it out.
So I borrowed one of your radios lane and it worked fine.
Yeah.
So, um,
you couldn't hook up the extra, like the little thing that you, the little,
little pal, right?
Yeah.
The thing that I bought special for the rally didn't work.
So I have some more troubleshooting to do, but I did feel good about that
solution because then the radio is sort of upright.
That's good for signal, right?
And it's not flying around in a cup holder or on your seat.
You never have to go grab it.
And then you can put that, uh, lapel mic, um, on your seat belt or on your,
you know, and then you still have to turn it on and off, right?
You still have to press the button.
Obviously.
Yeah.
You could the button.
Yeah.
My mind, like, so right there, that wouldn't work with my car cause nine
11's don't have headrests.
Oh, that's true.
It's integrated into the seat.
The head could go around the seat in a dorky way, but I think it might fall,
but maybe you tighten it like a belt.
I do have these little, but it would work in that I have, I put these
little packing cubes, these peak design packing cubes in that little section
behind on the footwell of the passenger seat of the behind the, the back.
Um, so I have like two packing cubes I put back there.
So that's the place I put my camera.
So it's in a safe spot and I can always grab it.
And I could put the mic, the, the walkie there.
If I had a lapel thing and that would work.
But right now, the way I have it is I put the, I put the you walkie on
the passenger seat and I have to put like a sweatshirt over it or something.
So it doesn't fly around and then I can't hear anything and my car is pretty
loud anyways.
And then someone calls for you or whatever you go, wait, what was that?
And I'm like, what?
And I, I don't even bother like picking it up.
Yeah.
And then I also have the cup holder on the floor and it kind of fits
perfect there, but it's the couple.
There's a little too big.
So it flies on the, around on the floor and then I'm screwed.
I can't remember on, on your car, um, on the G bodies, does the door pocket
have a cover on it?
Like it has a cover.
Oh, okay.
So you can't clip it on the edge, right?
Like has a lid.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, yeah.
Cause that would be a good.
That's, that's like the E 30.
You can clip it on the edge of the, of the door pocket there.
I bet you the style that I got that rear seat organizer does have a
cinchable belt situation on the top.
That's how it goes around the headrest anyway.
And yeah, really tighten it.
Yeah, I think you could tighten it and just for the rally and it wouldn't
fall down because the seat does get wider at the exactly.
So I think, I think it would work and they do, like I said, they come in
all sorts of different sizes and they're cheap.
I mean, I for like 15 bucks, you could get one.
So then the radio is upright.
That also helps for signal, you know, there's little benefits there and for
sure, dude, I was, I was really impressed with, um, what's her name?
Sarah will prouders girl friend.
Okay.
Oh, she was, she was throwing out some, she was, dude, she was leading a
group from Cherry Lake and, uh, it was wet, windy, you know, single track kind
of thing and, uh, she was calling out every car, color, everything coming our way.
So yeah, it was very, very helpful.
It does not hurt.
I know we had, I had multiple people and again, these aren't always in our
group, like our immediate group, but the, the radios have a one or two mile range.
So you start to hear stuff out there and it's actually very impressive how
much range those little things have.
I know.
Yeah.
I mean, we'll get into it here in a second, but, um, I, you know, day one, I was
unable to partake, uh, uh, right away.
Right.
And so I was hearing stuff while sitting there waiting, like that was just
understanding where we were relative to what they were calling out.
Like, yeah, about a mile and change.
And it was hilly too.
I was like, wow, that was surprising.
Yeah.
So, uh, so let's get into this thing here.
So this is Sierra rally five, um, in and out of Sonora, California, the base, uh,
the foothills of the Sierra's is where we started and kind of ran from, um, the
weather looked good for the weekend, but Friday was going to be a little shaky
in our drive on Thursday.
It was like in and out of rain, kind of a beautiful drive though.
We went up through the valley really nice, had a good little crew, uh, Lane, Mark
in his Targa, um, John DeAngelo in his new sport classic in green.
I don't know what is that color called?
Uh, wasabi shoot wasabi green.
No, it's much darker than wasabi, but, uh, an insane car.
This is just like the most capable cool Porsche that they can build kind of.
I mean, you could pick your flavors, but this is definitely up there.
Um, he did a drive by like joined us in transit from Casa de Fruta cause I'd
called him and I was like, we're, we're close and I'm like, oh shit.
Actually we're three quarters of a mile.
I was like, oh crap.
Okay.
I'll go and he just ripped Audi RS three up the on ramp and joined us in motion,
which was fun perfectly joined us.
Dude, it was great right in, right in stride.
And then, uh, yeah, so cruised up, easy drive, a little bit of weather, um, got
rained on while we were having beers by the pool.
That was fun.
I toughed it out.
Yep.
You did.
And then, uh, Friday morning meeting, you know, we get there.
It's, it's cold and, and gray, but not wet at all.
And then right as we are about to start the meeting, it just starts pouring.
I think the heavens opened up, dude.
It was downpour.
I was like, I mean, I have a picture of Lane like trying to like pull the shirts
and his nine 11 in the background and the water, like just, you know, as the
drain drops are bouncing off of the asphalt there, it was like really,
really, really heavy.
Um, it was pouring and I had to show the shirts were getting so wet.
And then, uh, at one point John D'Angelo was like, Lane, do you want to
close your windows in your car?
I'm like, no, that's good.
And then I didn't realize I look over.
I'm like, yes, please through the keys.
Oh dude.
Yeah.
I had to grab all the rally guides too.
We had them just laying out on a picnic bench and got those in our little
gazebo, which was like a fricking lifesaver.
Oh my God, dude.
Good thing we're not social distancing anymore.
I know.
Like what do we have?
A hundred people inside of fricking 20 by 20, 20 by 20 gazebo.
Yeah, gazebo.
Yeah.
It was pretty insane.
It was like kind of fun.
It was cool.
I was like being at a concert or something.
Yeah, it was instantly like, this is a, this is an adventure.
The, uh, there was two cars that were open top that did not have tops at all.
Yeah.
No, they were just getting poured on like art posted a picture of the rain just
bouncing off the super seven.
Oh man.
Yeah.
Yeah, super seven and a cobra just a perfect.
I didn't look, but I was looking at the super seven as I was staying pictures.
Then I ran away and I was like, I wonder if it has drains in the floor like
you're just because these cars are so open and they're from England, right?
Like jeep style right in England.
You think that that would be the norm, right?
But yeah, it was, I would make quite a bit of water.
I would totally make a little like really simple tonneau with like four
points that it like even like magnets or something that you could like just
clip it on to have it at least get the rain to go somewhere else.
Aluminium bodied.
I know, but you'd have to come up, get creative.
But I'm just saying like, yeah, even Velcro, whatever.
I mean, both of us, I know the cobra has a tonneau.
Yeah.
And he had it on at some point, but I don't know if he had it on when it was
started dumping crazy.
Yeah.
So anyways, that was the, that's at the tone for the beginning of the rally.
We also had some rough roads, but I wanted to get back to the E 30 case swap E 30.
It finally gets delivered, which is always interesting.
Art drives a GTI from Santa Barbara case swap gets to Sonora.
You're reunited once again.
The car clearly has come all the way from Santa Cruz.
So it's ready to go.
It's ready to roll.
You know, they put it together.
All the stuff that we talked about.
So new differential drive shaft transmission motor mounts exhaust engine tune exhaust.
Yeah.
Big, big exhaust update.
And yeah.
So it gets there and you know, it's parked, you know, at the start of the rally there for
me and I'm offloading all this stuff from the griot's garage.
We're giving away goodie bags.
I didn't actually use any of the ceramic speed shine.
Did you guys?
I didn't get any.
I never got any.
Oh dude.
What the heck?
All right.
Well, it's in the, I have a bunch of it still.
So yeah, I didn't walk over to your car to grab.
You should have brought it to the morning meeting because I was trying to get rid of
all that stuff.
I did.
It was all there, but you didn't grab it.
Remember?
No, no, no.
I'm sorry.
It's date to give away to people.
Yeah.
We did.
Yeah.
Day two.
It was right out front there, but oh, it was an outside, not inside.
Yeah.
Anyways, I have some.
So I'll give it to you guys and I'll, but I'm really curious to try it because
basically it also, it cleans shines and it also creates a ceramic layer.
So it makes it easier to clean off.
It protects.
Yeah.
And then also a new version of the glass cleaner, which I really like that
this glass cleaner is like a non aerosol foaming.
It's really good.
I use the heck out of that.
But griots makes like five different glass cleaners.
They do, but I love it.
They're constantly innovating, man.
You know, never, I never, I just want their best one.
Give me the best one.
I'm telling you, I like this one the most so far.
So this is, this is the one.
That's the non aerosol foaming one, right?
Non aerosol foaming.
Yeah.
So I had, I used that when I installed some graphics on Mark's car, those B line
graphics and it works really well for that because a lot of times I'll just put a
B kind of like too slimy for too long.
This stuff was easy to squeegee out and then it almost like, and then it was easy.
The stickers actually like stuck to the hood, right?
They're probably about where it's very quickly, right?
Yes.
So it's easy.
Yeah.
So, so we had that tons of the really nice plush microfiber towels, which we had plenty
to give away and that was awesome to have because, you know, these cars are covered in
shite, especially with the silty ass rain and being up in the stairs.
So I'm like sitting there.
Well, I'm handing all that stuff out and then basically right as we're about to head out,
I transfer my stuff from the GTI into the E 30.
So I fired up.
I have a few people who are going to cruise with me.
I think it was Tim and Drew Van de Lea and Tim and I'm sorry, and a Reuben who's in his
Evo nine, which we'll talk about in a second.
And so we take off and I go two blocks and the car just starts sputtering like, like
you're running out of fuel or something, you know, and I put the hell and so it has just
driven almost four, four hours from Santa Cruz full tank.
Yes.
By the way, full tank.
I guess everything seemed otherwise looks good and I'm like, and I'm like, okay, idle
and idle is fine, but when I try to take off like under load and immediately starts the
buck and sputter and I'm like, fuck.
So I like, I put a neutral.
I give it a few revs and I start to go up the hill.
I'm like, all right, maybe it's just some, I don't know, bad fuel.
Who knows.
So I'm just going to try it out.
And so I get going up the hill there and it's not happening.
Like there's that they're doing construction.
Remember they had closed one lane and I turned into the high school parking lot, which is
right there, you know, and there were some spots.
And so the guys follow me into the lot and I knew it was going to get dicey there with
security with campus security.
And of course they came over and though you guys can't be here, like you're drawing a
lot of attention and it's distracting and all the kids are like staring at us.
There was like, I think it was recess or I don't know what the, what the fuck it was,
but they were like all hanging out, like we're looking at us.
High school recess at high school.
I don't know if you have recess or maybe it was just a starting school.
Maybe school didn't start yet.
Yeah.
I guess we're that we're there that early.
And so basically at that point I decided, you know what, this is not happening.
I'm going to try to limp the car back.
I don't want to have that.
We had no reception.
I'm not going to try to call tow truck right now.
We were close enough to the hotel that I limped it back.
And so the key there was if I kept it like at one sixteenth, like at like two percent throttle,
like barely, you know, like whatever that is, like barely on it, like it would, it would go
and it would just kind of like sputter along.
And so I managed to get going and we dropped the car off at the hotel and we're like, all right,
I texted the beeline boys and Nick and I told him was up and we're kind of troubleshooting.
And I said, all right, we'll figure it out when we get back later.
And Ruben pitied me.
So he threw me the keys to his Evo nine right away or later.
Oh, no, sorry, later.
Well, we ripped, you know, an epic road all the way to the Vista point and that was fantastic.
It was super fun.
And like I got to like, you know, like feel the car dynamically and like it's it's so damn good.
And so after the Vista point, we agreed he wasn't toss me a key.
So I drove the rest of that way back.
How far did he toss them to you?
Was it like a foot or like maybe three feet, three feet?
It was an underhand, underhand toss, but I was a real toss.
But I, but I went like catcher's mitt style, like not like this.
Like I just like grabbed him out of the air.
Just like I swiped him out of the air and and yeah.
And I looked at him and like I smiled and my tooth like sparkled.
Yeah.
And did you have like anime eyes at the moment for sure?
Yeah.
And like a little teary-eyed at the bottom, you know, like where they get really
big in it a little, like because you're excited and you're so awesome.
And then you pulled out some Mentos or what?
I was thinking about it, but I kept the Mentos and check.
And so, so I got to drive that car.
Yeah.
And that was amazing.
I got an epic run on a series of fantastic roads.
And how good is that road to that pavement quality?
The just the groove you get into.
Yeah.
It's so good, especially that side because you're not on the cliff side.
Exactly.
Exactly.
And I'm not.
This is the first time driving this car.
It's his car and you know, you know, you guys know Ruben well and we usually drive together
and he was very much encouraging me to drive the car, you know, so and I wanted to enjoy it.
And I did.
And it was, it is insane, dude.
I mean, it is, it is so good.
Like he, as he, I told you the other day, he said he has it like pretty dialed.
And like it's every single input is like immediate.
Whatever you want the car to do, it will do, you know, and like it's, it's so good.
He's like done everything from like the, you know, repack the clutch, clutches on the LSD.
So the rear is really tight.
So it's hooks up super nice and like the suspension, the damping, he's got Olin's on there like
and the alignment is really good.
He's got everything is, it has gone through and it makes quite a bit of power over stock.
And it's, it's definitely like video gamey cheating mode.
Like it's just so good.
Like you can, you can, you can over, over do a corner and be like, okay, I could just get
harder on the brakes and then just turn like it's just, you know, and then just get back
on the throttle and it's fine.
Like it's just, is there, is there any like similarities with that in the skyline?
Yes.
All wheel drive, very bows.
A lot.
The skyline is a beefier car or pouring, right?
So the, the main difference that I would say is that this car, you drive more like a front
wheel drive car, whereas the skyline, you drive more like a rear wheel drive car.
Yeah.
Like the Evo is kind of pulling you out of turns where you're, you're sort of pushing
out with the skyline.
Yeah.
And also, yeah.
And it is, and it's clear also the way that the power is distributed, but also you, you
basically you're, you're, you're handled the rear of the car responds more to
lift off over instead of like on throttle rotation, right?
So like it's, and so you, you, you tuck the nose in by, you like a front wheel drive car,
like, you know, where, as you come in, if you feel any understeer, you readjust and
like immediately rear wheel, like just like, like just kind of get light and point where
you need it and then you get back on it.
Whereas the skyline, I could be more on rotation, like it's, it's interesting.
It feels more like a real drive car, right?
You do like more on rotation with the car.
So, but dynamically it's so well balanced.
It's so good.
And we were just talking about how easy it is to drive.
Like it's like basically like uns, like you could on those roads, like there's, you can
keep up with anything, you know, it's, it's so good.
It has so much grip to like not just, you know, traction, like acceleration, like just
grip in the turn.
So you can, it's like, I kept testing it and pushing it and pushing it.
And it's like, yeah, dude, this is like, it's unfallible.
It's, it's, it's crazy.
But yeah, so I got to enjoy that, which was a nice thing to make up for the 30 situation.
And I got to hear all my turbo who she and blow off valve noises that I love so much.
And then I don't know if we want to skip back to E 30 talk or talk a little bit about that,
where we were, but I can go back to the troubleshooting if you'd like.
So we went, we got back to the hotel and like basically Ryan from B line has a had a pretty
elaborate like OBD two scanner that allows you to basically scan all of the different
all sorts of parameters and track all of the sensors.
And so he's like, yeah, dude, there's something with the TPS or the map sensor here, like based
on how it's behaving.
So we went out for a drive him in the passenger seat and like it was pretty clear that the map
sensor was just super wacky.
Like the throttle position was being traced beautifully, like everything was normal.
And then the T the map sensor was like all over the place.
So we're like, all right, there's something with the map sensor.
And luckily, you know, right around that time, Isaac was going to Napa and I'm like,
dude, can you just buy some of that map sensor spray like a cleaner spray?
And so I clean, I sprayed it in there, cleaned it out.
It did actually clean some stuff out.
It was pretty oily.
And I think that has to do with some issues that we had before in the past with with the oil catch can
cleaned it out, put it back on drove perfectly.
The car idled fine.
It drove beautifully and he again rode passenger and saw that now the map sensor is perfectly
tracking the throttle position sensor.
So it's like they're both in unison, which is what's supposed to happen, right?
Right, right.
So so then at that point we diagnosed it.
And so we ordered a new one Napa auto parts said if you order it by 5 30 PM, it will be here by
8 AM tomorrow.
So we did that.
We didn't bother calling anybody else.
I go over there at 8 AM.
Sorry, it's not going to make it here till Monday sweet.
So this is 8 AM on now Saturday, Saturday morning.
So I call around and auto zone get in the zone said they could get me one at 12 30.
They're bringing it over for but somewhere you had cleaned it and it was working.
Were you not confident?
Oh, sorry.
Sorry.
I skipped the whole thing.
I spaced that happened, right?
So then I realized, okay, shit.
Well, I'm not going to get it till Monday.
This one's clean.
Let's try it out.
And so I started the drive and it failed again and like a couple miles.
So so I in a couple of miles it failed, limped it back to the hotel.
And that's when I had called around auto zone was able to source me one and I stuck around.
I actually told everybody just go fucking enjoy.
Like I don't want to drive anybody's car.
I don't want to ride with anybody.
Like the whole point of me being on this is I want to drive this car.
Like well, I want to cry and curl up.
But also like I've been on these roads.
I know what I'm getting into and the whole thing for me is I want to drive my car on these roads.
So and it's not, you know, at that point it's a few hours away.
So I went back, did a little bit of work and I tinker with my steering wheel and
and had me some Starbucks.
They have a new, a new sausage, Italian sausage egg bite worn.
I know you're a bite fan.
I tried it.
Oh, you're on it.
Okay. There you go.
So yeah, one of those and stuck around and transferred some photos, did a little bit of tinkering
and it arrived, threw it on, boom fires right up, runs beautifully.
So at that point I drove up the hill and met up with you guys.
So the car was how much you said part.
Hundred and twelve dollars.
So yeah, and again, going back to the philosophy behind this build,
this is an accurate TSX type S motor in the system.
So I could get this shit anywhere, right?
Like auto zone had it.
They were just, it was the one down the hill.
So it took a while to get it over there.
But, but yeah, if this was an S 14 or whatever, you know, it's, it's 355.
Yeah.
But yeah.
So are we completing going to continuing E 30 talk?
Did you want to talk about your car?
Let's kind of go back to like everyone else, because this is day two already.
This is day two.
And well, to be continued here shortly, but that's where we ended up with a good
running car.
I had a great run up the hill until I met up with Lane and team up there.
It was awesome.
I had several solid runs and also several times coming up to groups that just refused
to move and I had a, I pulled over and cooled off Warren.
You know, I just, good for you.
I stretched a little bit, put my hands on my hips, looked up, you know, did that
whole thing, right?
Took some pictures, you know, maybe, you know, smell the California poppies,
you know, that kind of thing.
Yeah.
Those fragrant, fragrant poppies.
Yeah.
So day one, we did have a road closure, but it didn't seem to damper things too badly.
In fact, I think I might have found a new road because of it, but we'll talk about that later.
And then good hangs Friday night.
Parking lot hang was great.
Dinner was, was good.
The weather did put a little damper on some things there, but you know, again,
everyone kind of went with it and had a good time.
The late night parking lot.
Sush did anything.
Anyone go crazy?
Raging.
I went about pretty early, so I don't know.
I mean, I had a great time.
Yeah.
I raged, but I wasn't crazy.
That's right.
I heard you up all late, dude.
Yeah, I was, yeah, I just, I was being handed all sorts of stuff and I'm,
it was just like Halloween.
You know, I'm like, I'll let's do it.
Oh man.
Oh, we, we, we didn't talk about like, I will, I want to, I, before the rally,
I have a project car update.
I, I was putting, I was having brake pads put on my car.
B line was doing just slapping some pads on some more aggressive pads and new pads.
And then we came to discover that my rear tires were worn out pretty warrants.
So we had to get new tires for it.
This is like day before the rally is essentially wow got new tires and then
the car wouldn't start fun.
So the starter wasn't turning over and the check the starter and the remanufactured
starter that we put in nine months ago was just bad.
So got a warranted starter.
B line put that in under warranty and because they warranty all their stuff,
like for five years or whatever.
And we were back on the road.
I picked up the car like morning of the rally, I think.
Yeah, it was morning of the rally and, and, or, you know, morning before the
rally, I guess the, the transit day and everything was good.
Oh, and Ryan B line clean.
So I have that distributor had some like shims and stuff.
You can see pieces of shim in there.
So, and it was just so dirty, but Ryan did his best to clean it out and stuff.
So it got rid of like the fouling and falling on its face at 5000 RPM that I had before.
Oh, so it was like running pretty, so it was running pretty well in the rally.
Like I still think I was probably losing.
I probably was down a little bit of horse, you know, like whatever.
I was probably down five horsepower or something.
You know, I just felt like not perfectly Chris, but it was way better.
So awesome.
That's good.
Do you think it's good enough to like run with it like that for now and then deal
with a new distributor down the road?
Or what do you think?
No, I'm going to get a new distributor right.
I'm going to have it rebuilt right away.
Yeah, good call.
So I'm going to have it rebuilt when I'm in Japan this next week.
Sweet, sweet, sweet.
We do have some questions.
Should we dip into some questions and finish the rest of the rally after that?
This is like a memento or like, you know, maybe a Tarantino-esque episode.
Well, because I think a lot of stuff is going to come up here.
I think so.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
I believe so.
We're going to talk twice.
Yeah, let's go dude.
Let's go.
All right.
Ben Roget says, huge thanks to the DWA boys for pulling off another amazing rally.
I love this community and the awesome rally time.
I do too.
Thanks dude.
Yeah.
Thanks for being a part of it and contributing.
We love to have you.
Thanks for the excellent bourbon, which was shared by Ben.
Oh, you had some one?
Saturday night.
Oh wow.
It was the same.
Yeah, it was delicious.
And I do enjoy that, you know, Ben's a bourbon nerd because I am not.
So I like, it's an educational experience as you're enjoying it.
So yeah, he's fully in.
I love it.
It's all in.
All right.
Dean P. Menchillo says, love seeing all the photos from the Sierra Rally.
So jealous y'all get to roll around mountain roads and commune over cars and parking lots.
Well, I'm sitting here in Texas dreaming of joining you guys on a rally one day soon.
See y'all at Radwood Austin.
Keep it epic.
Dude, awesome.
Dean, you're a rad.
Come to a rally.
Yep.
I would love to see that.
Speaking of, we had a lot.
We had a few people come from far away.
Dude, yeah, Ohio, Washington, Pittsburgh.
Where else anywhere else?
Yeah, Washington, Michigan.
Yeah, really pretty good, dude.
Very very good.
San Diego, I mean Nate, who's so not Nate on the gram drove his NC all the
way from Cleveland from Ohio Cincinnati.
So rad.
That is like such a barge.
Yeah, I mean, it's, that's awesome.
If you're in a position to do that too, because they go, they, it's an adventure to
get to the rally as well, right?
Choose epic routes.
You get to do some parks.
Yeah, big time.
Yeah.
And that's honestly like San Diego is impressive enough to me.
I'm like anything past that is just amazing.
This is what has happened.
Warren, this is, we're a destination event.
People come from all over the destination, man.
I know.
Well, come out from Texas.
Let's make it happen.
All right.
John Rye is asking who won the rally?
Any casualties?
I didn't win.
This is the first time, dude.
I'm out.
This is didn't win or finish.
This is for stopping, not winning the championship for the first time.
Our loss before it started, dude.
I lost the first start, dude.
The fact that it was pulled over one turn in was just like, well, I guess.
Did you see it happen?
Did you drive by?
Of course.
Yeah.
Oh man.
Brutal.
I did notice that Warren didn't say that art won too in the morning meeting.
That's right.
I didn't want to jinx him, but apparently I did jinx him.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No casualties, which is amazing.
No tow trucks that I know of and no incidents.
So dude, and he was so wet that first day, like Friday,
like some of those roads, man, they were so wet, but surprisingly had a lot of grip.
They did.
Yeah.
The pavement is so killer on that road.
It's I mean, but even the Cherry Lake one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, I know.
It's like, I think it just gets a lot of weather up there with snow and rain.
And it's used to it, right?
Well, yeah.
And I think it also just, it has like with that wear and tear,
it gets coarser, right?
Like it actually does expose more of the aggregate.
And I feel like it definitely.
Yeah.
I mean, I was really surprised how grippy it was, but it's also like you have to know that, right?
Like you have to know your car.
You have to know the limits and like you feel it out.
And I feel like that's what I was saying.
Like I think everybody, it was really cool to see how like well everyone managed,
you know, that all of it really like all the shit that was challenging conditions.
So the big mountain road from the first day, you know, the big smooth killer one.
Yeah.
Um, Warren and I ran that on the final day as well, and it was totally dry that day.
That road always looks wet, dude.
It turns me out.
It has this sheen to it and I kept like I would come around a turn and be like,
or I would come a straight to a turn.
I'll be like, oh fuck, it's wet right here.
I got to like take it easy.
And then I real, you know, like after like I'm like, wait, it's not wet at all,
but it really looks wet, dude.
Yeah, it does have that feel.
It looks damp.
Like it's a stamp.
It always looks damp.
It has this real, real shiny sheen to it.
That road is so incredible.
And we had the first day did the, just the beginning, like 10 miles,
which I already, I had completely forgot about because I'm always thinking about
like that last section is so insane.
And there was somebody on the radio.
He's like, that has to be the best road in the world.
The section we just did and I was like, just wait.
Yeah, yeah, dude.
The guy with the, what's his name with the dine in roadster?
Oh, yeah.
This is so nice.
Yeah, he, that thing was rad, super charged, but I know he posted today.
He's like, where do we go from here?
You know, he's like, been on several, like killer drives this year,
and then he posted something like, but this one like turned everything
upside down kind of thing.
Yeah, it's hard to beat.
Hard to beat.
There's a pretty, pretty amazing roads out here, and that's, that's a sample,
right?
Because there's, there's equally good roads all over California, which is amazing.
But yeah, everybody won.
We all won because everybody got, you know, as we're talking about,
everyone did a fantastic job.
We all had a great time and I was in several groups too.
And I realized that like people were very good about like when we came across
like homes and stuff, people would just kind of chill, slow down, let off the gas,
you know, like everyone was like well, very well behaved.
Yeah.
And the thing is that we have, it's interesting to see because like we have
like the, the, the veterans, right?
And people who have been on these things a ton and they know, you know,
and then we expect that from them because they understand how we operate.
But luckily, like you sprinkle in 15 to 20 people that are fresh,
but they're mixed in with a lot of these guys.
So they, you know, they sort of like know the drill and like they lead by example.
And yeah, it's a, it's a solid, solid ass community we have going on.
Yeah.
Automotive Omnivore says random assortments of cars are fun part of a DWA rally.
What's one of your favorite random groupings from this weekend?
Well, I don't know if it's random, but it certainly made a lot of sense,
which was the red, viper, white, grand sport, Corvette, blue, blue, Cobra,
red, white and blue, that was all very different cars in a lot of ways,
but all very similar, you know, like,
powerful V eight, different Ford Dodge and a Chevy 10, V 10.
Sorry.
Yeah. Yeah.
That's right.
Yeah.
Different eras and all that stuff.
For me, it was not moving, but at the start of day one,
Audi, a eight or sorry, Audi, s eight and cater up next to it.
And I was like, this is the range of stuff that you're going to see at our things.
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, the group that we, we came over one of the passes with and stuck most of day two was
this group, which was my 36 M three, the s eight, Drew's Volvo Peter B 90 with an LS swap.
That's right. LS manual, Volvo wagon, Peter B's Giulietta and 60 horsepower on a good day
and Kevin Malone in his Miata rental, a new one and DRF.
Yep. And so that's the crew.
It's like just so wacky and everything from a big grand grand tour sedan to a sixties
alpha to a new Miata dude and 60 horsepower to 400 and something horsepower.
Totally.
It's so rad.
Yeah.
I was on day one on the Cherry Lake Road.
It was like Will Pratter in his 70 or 71 911.
Then there was a GT four RS brand new 800 miles on the auto motor.
And then there was chef Malone and his NDRF Miata and then me in my 87 Carrera and then
a couple other Miatas in the mix.
It's so that was a pretty good one.
And the fun part was when the GT four S had to pull over for chef and I because he had cup
twos and he could not find grip.
Oh, right.
Right.
Yeah.
That was a rough date of cup twos.
Yep.
Big.
Did you have any pairings on your big fat flip says no questions.
Just want to say big thanks to the DWA boys for another amazing rally.
See you guys next year.
And then he says actually I lied immediately after getting home.
My brother and I started scheming on what car we can get for the rally classic needs to
be capable of rallying with two quote unquote husky boys in it budget.
Budget is around 15 K has a lot.
Man, they can get pretty much anything.
Whatever you guys are limit much.
You can get your oyster, dude.
Yeah, dude.
Well, show the room is key here.
It sounds like well as someone.
John DeAngelo threw in sob 900 turbo, which is a sweet choice.
We don't have enough sobs on the rally.
And then Justin Hall said E 36 M three all day long.
I mean, that's a really good choice.
Pretty hard choices for 15 K. Yeah.
Like me out is tough right now.
It's very tough for big, big kids.
What about a 944 944 they could do a 944.
They could do a 15.
I mean, he's like a some trying to think like the he had the Acura.
What is that thing?
He had an Integra Integra Integra type.
It was a no.
Oh, you mean now.
Sorry.
Before he had an Acura Integra.
I think it was just an LS, which is not.
Oh, that was his old one.
I know.
But right now he has that Acura, which is like basically a civic type R.
Right.
That's yeah, which look awesome.
Great color.
It looked it looked really good.
I'll slam.
It made it look really wide.
Look like a like a touring car, dude.
And those are because they do have the really cool over fenders.
And I actually I wanted to ask him.
I wanted to drive it because remember we had the type R and they
have zero traction.
I wonder if they fixed it with these.
Well, he had a good rubber on it and it was slow.
Like I'm sure yeah, maybe it was better just because of that.
And then his brother had a brand new like one like one year old 2024 VW GTI R and R
Golf R, you know, Golf R.
Yeah, which is like the ultimate cheat car in this scenario.
It's like yeah, he's probably drinking Espresso.
Well, just what looking at his watch.
No, yeah, so it feels like they could do it.
Oh, they could do it like a wouldn't RSX be cool or no, it's too new to new.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, how about I would?
I think my mind immediately goes to mark to GTI.
Is that way too much to ask?
No, it's kind of small, but actually they would be no.
I mean, I think it's spacious inside.
I'm just thinking like 15k price point.
It's kind of tough now, right?
It's tough.
Yeah.
So if you can find a good one of the mile miles because they're really boxy
inside and they it's it's a great car for this and they're into that.
You know, it's got the hatchback thing, front wheel drive.
They're fine with obviously.
How about a mark three?
Mark threes are so fucking slow.
I mean, you are six.
Yeah.
I don't know how much VR sixes are these days.
They're out there for definitely I think they're pretty reasonable.
Yeah.
Carado.
Yeah.
Those are cool.
SL 600 R129.
There you go.
There you go.
Do this.
Let's do it.
Get some equal length headers and put on a show.
Pretty good.
Desperately seeking Suzuki says, I discovered this weekend that my stock wheels fit in my spare
wheel well.
I went ahead and purchased matching OEM wheel and I'm planning to have five matching
wheels and tires to have a full size spare.
Is anybody else running this setup?
So he had the GTI that had a wheel went off the pavement and pop the tire and he was able
to get it to a tire shop and it was a bit of a detour, but I think he was able to keep
going down the road.
But you had a pizza party.
He did.
Well, they were at a pizza place, I guess or something like that.
I didn't even know this all happened till Instagram today.
I didn't know till right now.
Yeah.
He was telling me the whole saga was one of those were like they were the tire shop
was slammed, but they would get them in and then he went and checked on it three hours later
and they're like, Oh, your car.
Oh yeah, we'll get it in next.
Forgot about it.
Yeah.
Ah, it's so, so horrible.
It's that feeling.
Yeah.
My, my M three has a full size spare.
It's a, yeah, the same forged wheel and everything.
You always want to have that option.
If it's, if it fits and possible, my 30, my E 30, I had a full size spare and everything,
but it had the crisp handling radial TAs on it and there's such beefy boys that the, the
floor of the trunk was like up a little bit, like sitting on the tire.
Yeah.
So yeah, I have a basket weave in there.
I don't remember what tires on it, but it's, it's, um, it might be like an old Zennies or something.
That's what I have a, like a Dunlop Durezza and it's so it looks like you could see your
reflection in the tread.
It's so hard.
Yeah.
It's probably so bad.
I don't even want to know.
I wonder if I can fit a T 37 in there.
I mean, it's just wider.
That's the only thing as far as you're describing, right?
It'll, yeah.
Cause I have 15 by eight.
So yeah, it would definitely be elevated the floor cover thing.
My car has two things going against it is that it's staggered,
staggered wheel and tire setup.
And then it also has the fact that a spare tire will not fit in the front.
So, you know, besides a little saver, space, saver thing, so I'd have to like put it behind
the seat and I'd have to do probably a front wheel as a spare and then it'd be, you know,
it's like, yeah, nothing's like ideal really.
You're doing it all wrong.
Lane, you're supposed to put up roof rack to a basket roof rack with both like a front and a rear
weather strap on it and then you also how many batteries is that are dude cooler.
You put a steel, one of those old metal yeti coolers and then how about a how about a ski,
how about skis?
Yeah, wooden skis.
My favorite is that you said maybe a stud is tired.
He said put one of those old metal yeti coolers.
Yeah, yeah.
You know yeti, but you know one of the ones from the 1940s.
Yeah, there you go.
No, but you do need skis for sure.
We know we all know that and they have to be wood for sure.
Yeah, yeah.
Zephyr J says, which roadside view smelled the best?
The one that has the most pine trees.
We stopped and dipped our toes in the Walker River.
Got some foliage shots.
Although I was kicking myself.
I tried to pull over at this one spot high elevation and there was just people.
There's a guy on a motorcycle in one of the turnouts taking pictures of his bike
and you think you're going to get to the next turnout and then just isn't one down the hill.
And God dang it.
I saw you got you got the spot though lane with Tom Jutz.
Yeah, we were trying to go.
I put my car in the bushes.
It's all weird.
I love it.
I love it.
Hold on.
That's the best spot ever like although I'm a year not for having your car in the picture,
but I kick.
I'm kicking myself for never stopping at that little valley with the water on either side
and those little those little like they're like little pond houses has these little pond houses
like built like they're so cool.
It's so picturesque dude and I always want to stop there and take a picture and I wanted to.
I like missed it and I'm like okay next stop and there wasn't one same thing and then I'm
in a group of people and I'm like what am I going to do turn around now and like right
and then lose my group and then I'm fucked and then I don't have a passenger with me.
So I'm kind of like you know it's fun to be with a group and stuff and I don't know.
I know I know I'm a failure dude.
Well then we I said I'm like that's the only thing I've left to like check off is like
I want to foliage picture yeah because these trees are bright yellow and red and stuff
and nice we had the last possible spot I saw and I you know pulled over and got got a couple
snaps and I was like all right done deal so it was beautiful out there dude.
It was so nice man really really nice like I'm so bum that we lost our lunch spot though
that place was so cool.
I know it might come back I was in talks with them for so long about having to meet us with
their food truck which is what they're operating out of now they they serve them the marine
core base they're on site and they have like just unlimited demand like they're non-stop so yeah
they've really changed their business model but she was willing to do it she just could
not find a spot that was like appropriate for a food truck and I couldn't either had a large
group yeah ultimately huge freaking group and then yeah so we tried but are you didn't make it
out there and I will say I was not disappointed with the food out there so like Walker had great
like the burger place was awesome had a saucer ice cream a good burger that was great it was a cool
little outdoor like kind of eating the garden there it's kind of sweet and then the barbecue
place is supposedly like epic and everyone is raving about how good the barbecue place is
and there was tons of people there and the food came pretty fast at both places like it took
you know less than 10 minutes to get my order at the burger place and that's a big that's a
big win right because that other place is super scenic and the vibe is great but they're really
slow so I know yeah but that's awesome so I wouldn't be that bum dude I was like super stoked on what
nice had going on well that's great to hear that everybody yeah it was still very enjoyable and
the food was great so awesome yeah then we went to a different town altogether and had an awesome
lunch with a good crew do you go over the border no we didn't make it up there although some people
wanted to go to get some zins a little go to Zimbabwe up there and get some new flavors oh I see
oh is that because the Nevada Nevada has like their own or something or like well they can have
flavored we're not allowed to flavor things oh I see I didn't know well the full I guess the
flavored stuff is a gray area in California we're not really supposed to have it but like no one's
right yeah it's like it's like targeting children kids but Nevada they're like fuck the kids yeah
they're like you can have bubblegum flavor and cherry pie yeah exactly their formula they have
formula flavors in just fucked up speaking of lunch so you know I picked up my part at 1230
installed it in the parking lot right there and you know I'm going to go back memento real quick
and I was throwing it on I like pulled it off luckily it's a really easy part it's like on the
intake manifold 110 millimeter bolt unplug it pull it out right threw that on and then this dude was
wrenching on his um lifted um uh Silverado like big tires you know all kinds of shit on it and
he's like nice so you're you're you're at the auto zone parking lot your your peak automotive
experience dude this is this is like everything for me um and so um he walks over he was like
wrenching on his car but he saw me like pop the hood open he walks over and he had a 318 or sorry
325 is and like I think it was like an s 50 swap and like he's like he's all into e 30s we're in the
middle of nowhere up in the sierras and I was like this is awesome and I'm stoked that you know what
this is and like um and he was like really amped on it and we're talking I was like showing him the
engine and he was like blown away by that he knew what a k 24 was like he was actually like a total
car guy um as all auto as all auto zone people are right you know yeah so I like how all auto zones
and all those but it says don't know working on your car the parking lot yeah people like there's
twelve people working on cars in the parking lot yeah and then they're coming out to like install
windshield blades exact the pavement is like yeah the pavement is like eroded from like all the
chemicals like that have been on it and yeah the one thing that they did do across the board
at all fucking auto parts places which blows which blows me away which doesn't say which
pisses me off sorry um is that they removed all of the trash cans from outside so for that
like they don't want people working and throwing their shit out there right but I mean I think
it becomes like a gas station trash can where all of a sudden anyone like is cleaning their car out
of right but it's so annoying because like it's no that stuff like that packaging like dude now
you're sitting it's in your car you have to drive it on why I sent that picture to the group of the
there's an o'reilly's in scott's valley and I just was walking by it and the trash cans were
overflowing with wiper blade packaging it was like it rained once you know in Santa Cruz
immediately everybody then nobody took the trash out but yeah yeah that's why that's why so the
reason I brought it up though is that that was at 12 30 and I had had myself a little sausage
egg bite at like 10 30 and a coffee and then like I walked over there or I drove over there rather
and I grabbed the stuff installed it and drove straight up the hill so I didn't eat
lunch until I got back into town and I was like I was freaking starving dying but yeah man are we
ready for some more 30 updates huh well let's let's finish these off here you just hold your horses
there but hey dude auto works detailing is asking who won the auto works detailing detail it's always
a great car with a cool owner let art tell the story here very cool car and a great overcame
adversity yeah dude yeah this is this is a this is more like a precedent thing and
and it's a it's what's the word it's it's they call it they pass the vibe check I think that's
what people say like these days does that it yeah yeah okay they're farming and it's also on me
because I was supposed to like contact it got to go make an introduction for this but we've been
busy with work man so it is a brand new 911 st which is arguably like the coolest car ever
it's like in terms of like what's available right now you know it's naturally aspirated
manual gt3 effectively right with minimal arrow like no wings just super clean yes they're very
very expensive and this guy is out there in the rain in fucking rocky dirty roads like just enjoying
his car and it's it's exactly what it was meant for and I've never seen one in the wild outside of
car week and that's usually completely polished and sitting in some driveway most of these people
that own them treat them as investments you know you can't you're not allowed to buy these cars
you have to be invited to own one or you have to own a 918 or there's some bullshit like vetting
process and so like like dude he's out there enjoying the car it's completely covered in bugs
and there's like rocks in the vents and like and he's like taking pictures of it and he's like
fuck it this is what this car is for and he's gonna you know he's gonna enjoy it out there and so
our buddy Doug won it he's is it daft what is it on instagram daft 9000 i think daft chief
daft 9000 is the one for the daft chief so daft chief daft 9000 is the cars instagram so if you
yeah if you look at at staff 9000 and it's the gauge cluster and it shows because it's a 9000 rpm
red line on the on the car but daft chief is his personal account yes and the account follows the
car to from ordering it through it getting updates at Porsche like it's sitting in the transporter
like so um yeah so just a great guy and it was very commendable i mean there were some other
people in the running for sure i mean the sport classic owners i mean johnny right john john yeah
john and honor yeah another one that was very deserving and we kind of went back and forth
again i know we're again we're not elitist everybody knows that i mean we just listen to
do they but well i think we're talking about but it's just like so there's also something to be
said that that that award is also a bay area award kind of like i don't want to give it to somebody
that lives in washington bobby reed sorry but uh you know and he would probably like drive down
for it but i know in other words like we're trying to make it so that someone can really
enjoy that and like not feel like oh great i won this thing that i can't use so totally yeah so
like we had talked about giving it to the 3.0 csi or something like that but he's a la base and i
think he's in san diego the e nine right yeah san diego actually yeah exactly nine that's all
i just want to like a little preface yeah and that's very and then we should mention the fact
that like that he was very much in the running and would have been the award winner quite frankly
because everybody knows how rusty those cars get and it's so sketchy like this is genuinely a car
you do not want to get wet because they trap moisture in the freaking fender wells like they
yeah they rest from the inside out yeah they're flawed and so you know we know this and and it's
it's just commendable to see this guy out here enjoying the thing but um kevin i'll introduce
you to the guy soon later today hopefully this evening but he won a full we should complete
detail uh by otters so inside and out this is a complete detail service and he may gift it to
somebody you never know oh i'm just gonna say 15 um yeah but we should probably make a post with
dugs car and kevin and all of those things um all right last question that's so mint max is asking
do you ever nickname your cars and if so any highlights from over the years uh no i do not my
wife does um her Mustang was blondura and our buddy misha does we all know jenna oh yeah lover
jenna jenna was great um but i never have really it's just van again or you know just
the the name the name of the car yeah i don't i don't name my did you did you name your regal
the regal beagle or your first and favorite car it was the regal beagle exactly um i do name some
of my cars not all of them usually especially nowadays uh in collaboration with my daughters
i'll tell you that our daily driver or my daily driver is marshy the because marshy because the
e golf looks like a marshmallow to them and it's white and it's white exactly um and i have named
some of my cars and especially like in my like i have the folders for my cars right so all the
photos uh and my e 30 did you guys know that my e 30 has a name oh my oh no and and it has had a
name since i got it tow truck no its name is baloma baloma baloma baloma is a white dove
the little dove yeah but where did this come from did your your daughters do this no that
one i just i was just thinking of something because i wanted to name it something i'm like
what do i put it on this album like i could put e 30 but i wanted to name it something and i'm like
it's a white little car lane is shaking his head as hard as he can and smiling but yeah he's mainly
shaking his head well now we lane i think you have a new sticker design
a little f***ing dove with baloma on it maybe the dove is instead of an olive branch it's
holding like an oil cooler line yeah exactly it's squirting out oh my god or a map sensor maybe it
has like a big exhaust like a big fart you know part can on it or just v tech yo like oh my god
how about holding a t 37 or something you know like oh dang right dude but yeah i have my cars
over the times highlights my biggest one i my favorite one rather was one that my wife came
up with so my b five s four avante in emily yellow with a six speed manual it had i don't
remember what the numbers were but hardly remember that car it was it was it was like six let's say
with the number the start number and it was h w m and then numbers and my wife at the time who i
was dating named it hot wheel mama and so the b five s four amounts name was hot wheel mama and to
this day if i talk about that car we'll call it hot wheel mama that's so cool dude hot wheel mama
it's such like not a hot wheels type card but it's funny to yeah h w m h w m dude trying to think
my my one thirty five i also had a name but i can't always bumble one thirty five was bumble
because it was a little it was like very like but round and black it's a bumblebee round and
black yeah yeah like an eight ball all right well that's it for questions so we're you know
there's a lot to cover in these things we i mean i feel always like i have a million conversations
have great hangs with so many people like great runs um isaac and i actually beeline isaac was in
nicks roadster and we had an amazing run up to 9 000 feet just him and i open roads like
awesome awesome hill climb and stuff after lunch just so many like of those moments where you kind
of it's hard to like almost remember them all and and yeah figure it out yeah really yeah great
lunch hangs and you know like dunkin in the river and all that stuff is so fun it was nice to see
chef malone out i think he listens to the podcast but it had been like six seven years since he had
been on a on a rally his last rally was the coastal range rewind wow which feels like an eternity ago
it was 2019 right i think so and uh yeah so six years and uh since then he's like moved twice
gotten married had twins has a really stressful job and the cars have fallen to the wayside and
he almost didn't make it on this one he swapped his truck out for he has a cabbie and i'm sorry
caddy and he was uh gonna maybe not come and then he turtled a miata which was a great choice
that he's too big for the miata it had crappy tires but it was still a really fun time and i
we might a little a little bit of a fire under him for future car stuff which is always fun and
had a great time hanging and all that stuff and peter and drew and and yeah dusty dusty snowman and
just all the all the crew amelia and all the homies i know it's like j and da da da and yeah
i bring their kids and their dogs and their wives and john and sheryl with their two-year-old max
that was on his third rally at two years old fourth if you count in the womb oh that's true
dude that's true she came she came nine months pregnant like yeah and then i had a great run
with the tom tom jets and mark arcia and their early nine elevens that their target boys and
that's so good mark was like saying it was like his best run of all time and oh i mean i i don't
blame he told me that we're stretching you guys got clean and the cars and just this the day and
the scene like that is all time yeah that it's really really hard to beat no we were saying it
was like a 20 it was 20 miles ish of no one in front of us no one behind us just going
well i think we ran into the 2002 and he pulled over right away kind of thing yeah and and the
green nine eleven but besides that no one else and we were just having fun going for for 20
miles and it was like it was one of those ones where you're like i don't even care what happens
after this you know it's like exactly it was like you're like literally like we had the most
frustrating drive home actually after art will tell you what happened to his car but
we're stuck behind a truck that was just not moving over there's tons of pullouts all the
stuff but it kind of didn't matter dude we were like we did it we had you know we did it yeah
now i like that yeah yeah yeah it was it was cool to see yeah so many more kids and families and
i'm you know i know we all love animals too like dogs i would not want to bring my dog but i'm so
happy that other people do because then it just it's you know it adds to the vibe and and it's
just i wouldn't be able to drive the way i do if i had my dog with me he would throw up after three
turns but totally dude anyways the dogs dogs weren't on the drive they were back the hotel but
yeah david phelps and page i hung out with them you know i think it was one of the nights and
they're they're so cool delorean like i just yeah they are in the delorean and i totally spaced like
i i feel like i had seen them before and then they're yeah we've been to like a bunch of your
radwood events we're just at the one in norcal open to so cal i was like oh this is like connecting
all the dots you know and i mean dude his license plate is rad era dude it's it's pretty sick dude
and the yeah there was a so he's a newbie on the rally i what's like what's his name with the
ford probe oh shout out ford probe dude so sick did you see the first race on it yeah first gen
ford pro with rally mods like in a good color boxster breaks full boxster breaks oh front
rear see that dude like Porsche calipers everything and then he he's like an oudy vw guy
had a probe in high school so or had a couple probes in high school so he bought this probe
and he's like i'm going to take all the knowledge i have now and like build this car into like
a car that actually can drive well uh yeah and he has a bunch of other good i guess he has some like
famous i think he's the one that has like a famous video of like an uh oudy like 200 or
something doing this crazy pull from a stand still it's like some viral video like all the
vag guys knew about it they're like oh that's that one you know so yeah there was like a bunch and
and there was the whole vortex vw vortex crew came out yeah really yeah all the guys that like
all the guys like um like Byron and stuff they're all from that see i don't i need more like back
story i we try to do name tags this rally because i just at least i need an instagram handle to
know like so warren they were the ones that remember radwood um chicago the first one and
we went to dinner at that greek place yeah yeah yeah they like so Byron was like at that dinner
with us and stuff no away and he was the passenger in the s 2000 that's so funny it's like 12 but
familiar yeah it's man and of course like with a hundred people on the rally you don't get a chance
to sit down and chat with everyone and like get runs with everyone there's certain cars i didn't
even see like to be honest the probe i only saw at the hotel yeah yeah there was like a silver
e 36 m 3 and i like didn't even realize it was i didn't see it till there's like a third day or
something multiple things like that keep happening but it's just big groups and you get in your own
little world no it's it's awesome dude i mean yeah 997 gt 3 was rad dude there's so many good
porches like that the the the high level of like newer porches whether you you know
whether you heckle them or not they're so damn good but uh dude they're just like
incredible like it would be one thing like the st in the sport classic like that's like
you know the top tier and but then still there's like a freaking new turbo and a gt 3 and yeah
yeah crazy crazy cars gt 4 rs's yeah like just amazing and these people are using them
they're out there like ripping back roads and yeah we don't go we don't go easy on them yeah
so this takes us to the end of the rally or i should say end of day two of the rally and
so are you were in town and you decided to come the back way
up and meet whoever was up there right and just to i went the opposite reverse reverse of the
route so that i can meet up with you guys instead of trying to chase you down because it was going
to be too far um and so while um i i mentioned earlier that you know i had a great run and
you know i had several like you know because you know i did catch up to groups and did all that but
i was finally able to test out my reddestine sprint plus remember which i talked about so i had a
fresh rubber on there which i am kind of obsessed with dude like because they look so good like i
look so good and and this is the thing that we talk about a lot right with like
yes like tire performance is one thing and sizing is one thing but aesthetically like they have to
look correct for a car right and so these have like a really nice rounded sidewall in the shoulder
and it's very minimalist like the the both from a tread pattern and also the sidewall there's not
a bunch of shit all over it it's just a simple little stripe with like reddestine and sprint plus
and the fonts are really cool so it's perfect for like Radwood era cars and so they look killer
and they i think it was a big improvement aesthetically over the tires i had on there
before which i really didn't like because they came with the wheels that i bought they were t37s
very low mileage and the tires are practically new but they were kumo v7 30s and they're you know
locky and just like ugly and like and they rode like ass and they were very tram liney too i really
didn't like them but i replaced them with these and the first thing that i that i noticed right
away is how comfortable they are they're like they're so like cushy you know they're they ride
really nice they remind me of like the the cn 36 they they absorb bumps really nice and and and
they also remind me in the cn 36 that in that they're they have quite a bit of tread squirm
because they do have tall tread and so the car moves around right like it's like you make that
you make the turn and the car just kind of like it sort of has to settle right because it but you
kind of want that you know you want a little yeah a little dance or what yeah a little merengue
yeah yeah paloma paloma and so bumble and yeah so it's that's the first thing you know first
couple first impression after you're starting to get up to speed and then you start to really
build and build and you know push them a little bit and see how responsive they are and then
like response is good it's just you do have a little bit of a tread squirm and there's that
initial turning they settle you're good and the grip is actually very impressive and i know that
i had mentioned this a couple of podcasts ago because camisa went on a rally with them on his
his e30 with a less aggressive alignment and he just chewed up the shoulders like crazy and so i
talked to him about it and he was telling me that you know the grip was impressive and that
this is something that i keep hearing that it seems like they're miscategorized on tire rack
they're they're categorized as a summer grand touring or something and they're at the same level
as like a performance summer tire like a you know a conti extreme contact dw you know the the
yocohama equivalent the advan apex or whatever it's called like it's actually pretty grippy like
it's plenty of grip you know and um and obviously based on the tread pattern you can tell that they
would they would easily be able to to do to evacuate a ton of water in in the rain i didn't
drive in the rain really just like damp conditions but um but yeah so phenomenal grip they're very
comfortable which i which i'm stoked on they're super quiet and they ride really nice so they're
kind of a win-win-win here and i feel like it's absolutely something that i want to recommend
to people that are looking for tires as long as that the size is available especially when it
comes to this era of car because it looks correct you know this is historically happened with like
the xwx's and you know the the older more vintage cars the as we talked about the perlisi in 36
and having the tire that looks great on a 60s and 70s car but there we haven't really had
something out for our cars and reticent's filled that void which i'm really stoked on so um you know
so i got to i got to enjoy those on the drive and was really impressed and
real quick i'll i'll skip to um the people's choice award winner because it's relevant um
the people's choice award winner who is voted on by all of our participants not us
one uh full set of reticent tires which is pretty rad so we'll see where those end up
they do offer modern stuff and it's not limited to these cars so well the guy who won was on
a delorean and i'm sure they are fit for that car it's perfect yeah yeah absolutely needs
totally yeah so i think it's pretty ideal his car sounded good dude it had a pretty cool exhaust
i caught up to him on cherry lake going up the hill yeah and and it definitely had a custom
exhaust i don't know what it was i forgot to ask him but yeah i noticed it sounded really good
yeah so yeah so i i drive up the hill meet up with with uh i i see lane with his portia crew
and rubin and tim and we hung out for a little bit did some flybys and freaked lane out because
i the v tech popped too loud yo he was like tell me how good it sounds we're like yeah well so yeah
i'll i'll take a moment here to mention that obviously a complete exhaust redo here um
induction sounds incredible now i can actually hear it because the exhaust is quieter so yes
it is very much quieter as significantly even as well when you went by us when the when the v tech
kicked in yo the induction is so loud dude it's louder than the exhaust louder than the exhaust
yeah from the outside dude yeah that's crazy and that's a i mean yeah it's very noticeable yeah so
which is really fun because that crossover is so rad but induction is great exhaust is quieter
but it sounds like shit it's like very ricey like farty and you know and we we replaced the
resonator with a cat and we put a bigger muffler on it i just don't know where it's kind of rattly
sounding yeah it's it's like raspy we're rattly it's not even like a it's not like a e46 m3 or
something where those are raspy it's more like a fart tan anyways yeah yeah yeah so yeah we'll see i
mean i i i know that the resonator is resonator is the way to go here it's just a where does it
fit i don't know we need to figure that out so that'll be uh when two it's on the to do list i
should say but it's way quieter so i think from inside the car and even outside the i mean that
wasn't whatever it didn't sound great but it was like it's probably fine and it's really all about
how it sounds to you in the car and that it's yeah i can hear it in the killing your ears and you
hear the intake and yeah you're so i will also say that it is a honda engine yeah exactly yeah
it's never going to be like i mean it'll always have that that um a little bit of uh yeah the
character not always that's the thing is that it's just it's just we're dealing with components
off we're mixing components whereas if you listen to like vibrant or like mugen exhaust or what
which is specifically designed for those cars it's really smooth it's like it doesn't it's
like a smooth deep tone it doesn't have any of that tinny tinniness yeah yeah so it's like
i think we're just dealing with all these different parts someone even suggested like
what if you buy one of those and cut it up and it's like yeah i guess you could start there
but it's like where does it it's we're dealing with fitment issues more than anything um but um
yeah so i i i met up with them and then um rubin is leading in his evo nine tim and his boxter and
then i'm i chase after them and so we're cruising having nice solid run five miles or so like and
you know no one in front of us it was awesome we should mention like so and then my little
Porsche crew took off like a minute later oh you guys are right away okay um yeah and so um yeah so
we we're we're cruising it was awesome and about five miles in um i get like the biggest cloud of
smoke you've ever seen behind my car like and um and it's white like bright white i'm like oh
shit head gasket and then i'm like what the fuck yes war yeah and so at that point i'm like it was
i'm processing all of this you know it seems like it's in slow motion but realistically like just
he saw where you know lane saw where the oil slick was to where i stopped it was maybe a quarter
mile but it felt like forever so um i immediately start flashing my lights to tim like yo this is
not good they don't see me so i um i turn the car off put it in neutral and i make a left turn
and up ahead there's a shoulder um and i'm trying to make this shoulder but i have maybe about
500 feet to stop i'm as hard as i can on the brakes and the car starts to pull left onto
the oncoming lane it's not not super hard but because i don't have a it's not assisted anymore
right it's not boosted so but the left side of the brakes i like learned later they were grabbing
harder because the right discs were completely covered in oil and and so i finally i made it at
the very end of that little shoulder and i wasn't going very fast at that point i had slowed down to
maybe like from when i started the brakes to stop maybe 50 miles an hour but if i didn't make that
shoulder i was just going to coast down and try to find something else so but i stopped the car
and obviously i popped the hood right away and lowered the windows because the cab was completely
full of smoke and we're trying to look around or i'm trying to look around what things going on i
couldn't figure it out and then lane rolls up like five minutes later and like thumbs down i'm
looking underneath the car i'm still trying to figure out like i'm just like really was it that
long i don't think it was that long dude or however long it was i think i was like i think it was
probably like 60 seconds later dude dang really because i went through so when i was by the way
warren's still there yeah okay i because i was driving i saw you at the end of the straight
like not far before that i was like right behind we were right behind you guys dude okay good okay
and then when i came around that turn i went through a full on like cold trickle fucking days of
thunder cloud of smoke dude i couldn't even see it was a wall of smoke dude wow dude like i could
not see it was like i was like just fucking throttle down no but i slowed down because i saw
that and it was like oh shit did someone go off or something okay you know i was scared to like
something and um and then i kind of went through and it almost smelled like barbecued to me i was
like oh it's not cool and and then looked down to the ground but i had slowed way down because of
the smoke yeah luckily because there was a freaking fattest line of oil like like we're talking like
two feet wide yeah for you know through a whole turn like on a straight and then through a whole
a left turn just this on the right side of the road basically like right where your tires are
just clean oil yeah all the like for like i don't know like couple like a hundred yards dude yeah
and it got smaller and then trickled out but i went through the crazy pile of smoke and then i
came up right right on you yeah and i think you were like just getting out of the car so it was
like yeah we were right there yeah you were right there yeah so i didn't realize you had just you
had left right behind us and so dude i um but as i said like time is when stuff like this happens
right like i don't even know how long it was like you know and um and so i um i get out of the car
i'm like looking around yeah because i was actually looking in the engine bay when you walked up and
i was like i don't even i don't even know what's happening here i'm like i'm still trying to figure
this out i'm like is it the front main seal and then i'm like wait a minute and i look down
off the side of the block and one of the oil cooler lines popped off of the fittings
and it had bathed the header and then it was like just shooting oil down all along the exhaust
and all over the front brake and all underneath the car and that's why i couldn't i couldn't
slow down it was like i had no brakes and luckily i turned the car off you know right away and
there was no mechanical noise that i heard even like coasting down or anything and i was a neutral
but um immediately after that and um so after maybe i think it was maybe five ten minutes
after that when the rest of the crew showed up and it was you know i think it was ryan first and
then tom jets and a bunch of other people and we're all trying to figure out what we're going to do
and like i got her yeah isaac i was with isaac and so then he flipped back around okay went to help
yeah and then bat yeah john jesse stopped too and so we had a bunch of people and then at that
point we're just kind of giving thumbs up just to get people going because we had assessed the
situation oh yeah and davin the nine six eight pulled over oh yeah and then it was kind of a
a hanks ash for a little bit even yeah i mean i had snacks where i was getting snacks lane pulled
out snacks we had plenty of oil to drink i was a marveling at the photo you posted on instagram
of your like recap and how much room that freaking car has to work on it yep it's unbelievable
because the engines sit so far back there's like a foot between the radiator and anything that you
need to like touch so it's i mean talk about like the easiest thing i mean dude those hoses were so
out in the open it's like you have all the room in the world around those things yeah access is
great yeah it's the opposite of like a 300 zx turbo right which is like the worst hour even like
even a stock e 30 there's yes you're right yeah exactly there's so much access so one i do want
to mention so art had lent his 10 millimeter socket to someone earlier in the day so he didn't
have a 10 mil socket so yep i pulled out my old has it tool kit and gave the and gave him a socket
and a 10 millimeter from that dude it's funny because i was like thinking about you know that's
a cool little tool kit like it's like a it looks like a it's like a 16 inch by 16 inch like cd case
from the 90s like a padded kind of faux leather case it's like 68 tools in it or something
i looked it up online because i wanted to recommend that thing
guess how much it is now oh it's gone up yeah
gosh it's okay i paid 314 dollars for it yeah that's a lot of money right but it's so nice yeah
that's a lot of money for tools like that i mean jesus is it could it be 500 bucks
kate what is it kct ktc tools has it for 750 and it's on sale and then a lot of places like ebay
and all these other places it's selling for over a thousand dollars holy shit well no excellent
investment yeah yeah i'm making money on my fucking tool kit you can rent that thing out by the way
they were super fresh and i'm under the car here like completely covered in oil like are you sure
you want me to use these dude and so but like i cleaned it all up and handed it back to my head
we had plenty of griotus microfiber towels and and glass dude and everyone had oil to give
art to do so so so basically what we did is we we looped so well one of the oil lines popped off
we pulled the other the one the the good one from the oil cooler disconnected at the bottom
then looped it back so just bypass the oil cooler and so we're like trying to figure out you know
who has oil i got i think i got brad pit oil brad pen or like from thomas jets maybe the
the super high zinc like blue stuff we put motel in it what else was it i think we put
some liquid molly and full cocktail yeah it was a little bit of everything so the engine was just
you know it was fucking hammered but you know yeah it was a long island iced tea it was the
most the most zinc a case series has ever seen in its life for sure but yeah i was all those little
cracks in with yeah it was awesome cats are cats are gone dude cats are gone yeah our cat is gone
so yeah the the the camaraderie there was rad everybody was just you know we're chilling we
figured it out we got it sorted and then you know the moment of truth right everybody's quiet
you fired up rattling in it idols perfectly give it a couple blips sounds good and deafen
isaac because he had his head in the engine bay and the intake is right there and i revved it like
up to like six grand oh god but uh just an art move i know why you gotta make sure this thing's
not broken kill it yeah so yeah it was and it ran fine all the way back into town and all the way
home and all that was cool but basically yeah quite the adventure there with that i'm so so happy
that it happened in a spot that we weren't going too fast there was place to pull off and no one
was following closely behind me because that could have been some fucking double so dude so bad yeah
it's very likely that like if i would have taken off with you guys that i would have been right
behind you totally dude it's like because we were far enough behind where i was like cloud of smoke
slow the way the fuck down and then see what's happening and then i was just looking over the
cliff we were driven really slow like to kind of like figure out what happened but yeah could have
been really bad dude yeah and because it's a double whammy like you literally can't see anything oil
over your windscreen and you're running over the fucking thing so all of that oil so yeah yeah
cliffs on the right hand side yeah yeah it was it was uh it was one of those so art i was really
surprised i was really surprised you drove that car home and not didn't hand it off and just drive
the golf home just to like get kind of yeah but i guess yeah i mean the car is running fine now and
i it's it's been gone for so long and i'm like i just want to enjoy the car like i mean it doesn't
right now it runs fine as is and like i don't need an oil cooler to rip up in the mountain but you
could also easily do that and i can do that oil yeah yeah yeah absolutely i how is the car now i
mean it's you're kind of like i mean this is like this is break in miles right for this thing still
yeah so it's like you had these little things go wrong but it seems like pretty good or you said
it was a little dirty up front like maybe it needs us i think i think the yeah the it's towed out in
the front i think and i had mentioned that and i don't know if like beeline had a chance to look
at it i haven't even talked to nick about this like it's just it's one of those things there was a
lot on the list and i don't know if they actually got around to the check in the front end alignment
but i had mentioned that one of the tie rods look like i had gotten loose and i had tightened the
bolt and it was no longer the paint mark was off so and i can feel it like the the initially
right off center it's very twitchy like it's super darty it wants to like turn in either
direction and then as soon as you turn like a quarter inch it's fine like it's like it's just
right off center so i feel like the toes a little off but but yeah i mean the car is awesome i mean
that the the diff the 427 is so perfectly suited for this engine now like it's it's exactly what i
needed and i think a 420 a 410 would have been okay the 427 is like dialed it's so good and again
we're talking about you know yes there were some concerns around like okay you're at 80 miles an
hour you're at four grand but like this engine is not super stressed at four grand you know it's um
and no yeah so it's it's like a like a b16 on an em1 like the one that chris has at that speed
you're at 4400 rpm you know and uh and so s2000 same thing right so these cars are like that and i
mean or this engine is is fine and it's happy in that space and especially this one in particular
because it's it's tuned to deliver power so much higher all the way up to like 7800
with a 8000 rpm red line you know a little little buffer there warn um you know yeah but uh yeah so
so yeah it's it drives great now i mean i'm really happy with it dynamically it rides great especially
with these new tires it feels real it's like it's a solid little package now like i'm very happy with
it i had a bigger rear sway bar for the car that i'm not going to put on i like the compliance
and droop playful yeah yeah especially yeah because it has a torsion too and these are notorious for
once once a wheel lifts up they're not as effective um so i don't mind the droop i want to keep that
contact patch down and like with the with the bigger with the bigger um what do you call it rear
sway it would be picking up the the rear wheel you know on the inside wheel easily and it's not
necessary for this so so yeah i mean i'm pretty stoked on it i think um you know the interior we
didn't talk about it looks so yeah so yeah so i um i i did a sneaky thing and i i'm always looking
at like for e30 parts as you used to do warn um especially on facebook groups there's a
norcal e30 parts group and i'm just you know if i can find random things especially like a lot of
these parts because you know are very hard to come by and and uh in this case i still need to i'm
thinking i'm going to replace my gauge cluster with a different one and then swap over the needles
and stuff because this one still has issues but um i used my haundata app for rpm throw
opposition and everything else because it it's you know you have all the gauges on your phone but
this interior popped up and i wanted to go with ricaros um you know i had a line on some a while
ago and i was i had talked to the guy on facebook marketplace and then like he basically sold him
out from under me um i wasn't i hadn't sent him any money but i had told him i was going to get him
i was trying to figure out how to pick him up and that i just kind of like whatever i was over
that and so i'd been looking for ricaros rd's with brackets right because then you have to buy
brackets and the sliders and all that shit so i'm always looking around and this came up on us on
a seat search and um this dude super rad guy johnny um he's i think e30 interior designs i can
pull him up on instagram he's in in san jose Campbell area and he had a freshly rebuilt set
of sea of sport seats with real leather and like m tech fabric so so they had been redone e30 interior
styling you on instagram and a back seat and and a full it's been and a back seat not that not the
door cards but front seats back seat and my back seat is as you remember it was like an alligator
skin the driver's seat too had some driver's seat alligator stuff dude so dry and gnarly and it had
torn because it was so dry in a couple spots and like then someone like had tried to fix it i think
with some like plastic plastic kind of filler and i don't do it it was all alligator yeah it was
like crocodile they were they were out they were going to come out so um i was like at this point
you know what um these are plug and play they look super rad it's i mean i love this fabric and
dude not only do they look killer um but they actually are so grippy the fabric you know nice
they're it's actually it has like almost like a little bit of a texture to it it's not so and so
they feel great for performance driving so i'm totally happy with the purchase they look killer
and so what happened your old stuff did you give it to him yeah so do that you do johnny's is a
fucking man so um i um i found them and so i i told him hey here's my situation dude like i'm my car
is in santa cruz i'm over here i don't even know we're trying to coordinate like he's like why don't
like you know i'll install him for you dude so he drove over the hill went to be line pulled the old
scenes out kept the course because he rebuilds them and and dust them and then install the new ones
and i had a car that was ready to roll so like so insane dude it's so sick yeah i was really really
stoked on it and you got such a deal on them too dude yeah he was very like yeah he we worked out a
deal um and yeah he's also just in general like if you look at his work it's very high quality work
but his price is very reasonable it's e30 interior styling and he does e36 stuff which i don't know
if you remember warren we kind of hinted at it i need it um yeah and the and this is something
that is super important and i think we're you know we talk about this quite a bit but like
finding a specialist like this is so key like because this guy does bmw interiors exclusively
he's starting to branch into portia he does a little bit of other stuff but he knows e30 and
e36 interiors really well right and so if you know how to like it's just like anything right it's like
it's much like easier and it's for him to execute well versus trying to like reinvent the wheel with
like you know measurements and cutting shit and like i'm looking at his page now and he's got like
before and afters that are mind boggling and yours are very nice dude like these you know a lot of
times when seats are redone like you'll see cars pop up all the time and they're like in new interior
and you see it's just all wrinkly and gross like looks like a wrinkly scrotum or whatever and
his this stuff's like really tight and nice dude yeah it's really good it's a it's really high
quality stuff and and i love that he's he's not cheapening out like if you look at it he just
made a post recently like he's expanding his line he has access to all oem bmw leather and colors now
so he can do any color you want and he does all the cool fabrics of course too but
but yeah he's he's legit and he's near you guys too so i'll definitely connect you or i'm definitely
gonna hit him up yeah because i'll get him up he says he's done yeah he's done some vaders and
he's familiar with those and i told him that you had a bolster issue so it's nice to have a
now an interior guy for our cars for this stuff that's great and i know like forest up you know at
his shop has a really good upholster guy but he's pretty far away and it takes some planning to do
so having another option for this kind of stuff is always great but uh yeah north bay folks hit up
forest too if you have bmw especially bmw yeah he's up in santa rosa right yeah santa although he
does get pretty booked out dude like he i know they get really booked out that's almost yeah you
got to be on it yeah but uh no it's great so okay so e30 fixed made it to santa barbara
lane and i powered powered on and completed the rally um sunday was mellow made it to
lunch i actually sat down to try to eat lunch but then i realized it's going to be like
half an hour until i even got my order in so i peaced out with chris and we kind of drove together
but got a little separated on the on the drive there with who about lunch though real quick oh
sorry i was just how the how was the space that it was good it was just fine mexican restaurant
they didn't have us outside which is a little bit weird because it was such a nice day weird yeah
because i said one big one big table was all i had oh did they have an outside area one they have
like a deck off to the side which i thought they were gonna that would have i figured that's where
they would have put us and they i would have a real nice but there are so many people that
finished the rally that there is everyone was out of the restaurants now too so it was it was all
good but uh i just it worked out the road yeah we had a one i ran up on chadwick had his uh coolant
line for his heater core he had problems the day before like the fitting had broke between two lines
and then he had replaced it with a new fitting that he got it like nap or something when it was
like a little small so he had to put some electrical tape to kind of build it up to fit the hose on
and that popped off on on the road so we came up we came up on him and kind of like
made sure he was able to get on his way he was he was doing his thing but it's always nice to
have a little moral support and then yeah that took a little bit of time he bought that v 50
manual is it all wheel drive all wheel turbo very interesting choice for the rally but
well they were just doing the they they had a limit of three thousand dollars
oh it's only three car you can't oh shit and they they did that car is pretty clean dude it is
like i mean they're so rare too i can't even it's like a unicorn dude a manual all wheel drive yeah
turbo it's like a little mini v 70 r yeah he said it drove really well he was very impressed yeah so
he put a he put like difference he put a like a factory european front strut brace and a bigger
rear sway bar on oh nice yeah and he said it helped it a lot too yeah sweet nice he compared it to
his wrx's oh all right that's so that's so funny solid praise and then um yeah super nice guy and
i'm glad he was able to fix it and continue on and and then that's kind of it now my my rally
withdrawals are and serious uh you know i'm in the the doldrums but it's always funny when i come off
these rallies i always go right to the next one i'm like all right let's think about yeah how to
make it better so warren you guys took off when chadwick got his car fix and i was kind of waiting
for peter b and his car wouldn't start oh i wondered what happened so his car we were supposed to meet
up at the top yeah the five turns away and pierce car wouldn't stop start so i was hanging out with
them and he's like oh i think i you know flooded it he's and so i was like okay i'm gonna go ahead
like up to the thing and tell them and just wait there and if you don't come in five minutes i'll
come back down and get you and then i went up there and you guys were gone yeah so we went up
there and we were expecting to see kevin chef malone and some other folks and they were all gone
and we're like well shit i guess we'll just go to lunch and i thought you were right behind us
because i was leading the pack yeah and my radio died so i was like well i guess let's just let's
just continue on because no one's here to meet you know it was like yeah we just spent anyway we
were just there right it was kind of just there and it was hot and like we had just spent 20 minutes
with chadwick as he was doing his repair yeah and it was like well just go but i didn't realize
until later that you weren't with us because we then slowed down and i'm looking back like
what did those guys go so did it just start eventually it yeah he just like it just wouldn't
start and then it flooded and then he had to wait it out and then yeah i just kind of waited
up there for him for five minutes and then he came and yeah we're all good got it got it yeah
well howls well well that was going to say though yeah dude like the the rally withdrawal thing is
is legit we know that's a real thing and that's one of the things that i had going through my
mind it's like i want my car back because like i i want to be able to drive it yeah dude yeah like
i can go out tonight you know like if you go for a little rip you know like and i have the car here
so i mean it's um it's nice to have it home and and to have that i already drove it like you know
multiple times since i had it back just because like i can you know like it's like yeah now it has
the exhaust that you can actually drive to copy shops in and so exactly i'm not like super obnoxious
and like and also like the interior the seats are like really they're like the foam is super
nice like it's just nice to be in you know and feels good do you put your steering wheel emblem on
you know it's i guess it's that b-line somewhere i put on i put on a i disassembled the old momo
well see while i was sitting at the starbucks i brought it in there with me i brought one of
my little screwdriver's and i took the the horn button apart from my old momo and i took just
like the metal part where the the emblem is and it's like the old bmw motorsport emblem and
and so i built it up with with gorilla tape on the outside around it and i i wedged it in the
hole just so i didn't have a hole with a bolt with a freaking nut so anyways it's uh yeah that's
a thing but uh yeah i am i'm happy to have the car back and yeah we'll be doing some additional
tinkering here i'll probably just take it into an alignment here and do an alignment here soon
because i don't want to destroy those tires yeah and then you should get a new fitting and get that
those yeah we'll see i mean you know i was thinking about it i actually told ryan this morning dude
like i had several people reach out asking me why i had an oil cooler and i'm like you know what
why do i have an oil cooler like i'm not racing this car like it's not like i don't run it like
endurance racing button willow and um yeah i guess the k power guys don't run oil coolers
oh you know our buddy rob who who had his k20 r you know it was a type r motor but he had a k20
in his e p civic s i and he tracked the shit out of that car and he never ran an oil cooler never
saw an early temp so i think it's a nice to have especially for forest induction or if you're running
it in hot weather like which is a thing for us sometimes i up in the mouth sure but um so i
think for now i mean i can just it's literally all that shit comes off i can just take it off and
then i need to do an oil change anyways because i have so basically it's not hurting anything
right now it's totally fine no right now as is it's just looped i mean i can you see an oil
change as soon as possible exactly i need to do an oil change like like now but yeah so that'll
stay that's not a concern i want to fix the exhaust i think it's rubbing somewhere on the body a
little bit under turns i need to figure out what's going on there but otherwise yeah like the car is
pretty happy i'm going to change the throttle body because as we talked about right before
we went on the rally they were chasing down that weird the throttle position thing was fixed
they sorted that out but um there was still in a surging idle problem it's not surging but
it has a high idle and we've narrowed it down to the throttle body being really shitty like nicks
showed me pictures the tolerances are horrible everything is awful about it like it's just so
cheaply made and so i'm going to do the the the skunk 2 throttle body which is the one that
everybody recommends it's really well made and it's the correct port though the diameter you
know because it's it's you can do an s 2001 but it's smaller and the car is tuned for this specific
setup so i don't want to fuck with that but then yeah once that's back on i'll have to recalibrate
the tps so i'm going to ask nick to tell me exactly what they did and and then i can just
rocket so there is a cheap pc laptop in my future so i can have honda on there nice maybe rock it
on a stand off of the dash somehow oh good and then like you know through the whole
fast and furious thing yeah well of course one quick shout out to our homie nate who drove out
from ohio he works at bilstein he was able to source some shocks for a second place so that we
had the people's choice award winner which we said one nate you're awesome the britain tires
second place got a set of bilstein shocks which is super rat so b16 or b6 to b16 so wide range
and then third place got a $250 gift certificate to griot's garage which it's very useful yeah thanks
for coming out from ohio thanks for the bilstein support we love it it's awesome yeah all the
sponsors came through dude hagerty was not used at all though that i know i know they're
stoked right i think we've we've over indexed on some of the rallies i did see the the cobra
broke on the way home oh i have to use it would know i i think he was just using triple a or
something he was 100 miles you know he has his own he had triple a so yeah did you know what
happened something about maybe a fuel pump or something minor okay it was something minor
they went to a gas station it wouldn't start so got it yeah he was on the discord he was talking
about it oh shoot i miss that yeah that discord is alive dude it was pretty good pretty cool
to have that too and the people are giving us you know props and stuff and we got we got a letter
today from byron that was cool oh nice well thanks to matt hushy bushy for setting this up i know
lane you've been also been involved in opening no i wasn't involved but just like i did it all
yeah so it's i mean it's been it's funny it's been going that discord's been going for something
like seven years dude or six years or something crazy but it's been plugging in the the rallies
as they come along right well yeah but like i feel like we are never that involved in it until
this is like the first time it's been kind of a big i was on it last last last rally i had some
people too yeah yeah for sure i think it'll be definitely something we use a tool we use going
forward so yeah definitely yeah and then i was asking ryan i was like how many cars did you
have your hands on the you know from b line because they were they fixed him and isaac fixed
justin had a pinch fuel line on his seven on his you know super seven yeah and then i saw he was
like doing the belts on peter have checks career as and then yeah he said he i think he said he
worked on like five cars on the rally oh nice yeah i know chris chris and drop it was fun seeing
him because he's he's that schneider otter house he were down the hill for me and seeing him out
there also like you know lending he was wrenching on all kinds yeah yeah between them them too they
were like kind of going back and forth they were like i saw him and ryan and isaac talking about
like which tools they had and as needed they were kind of sharing it was it was rad so i don't
last run of the last day what the heck on the way to lunch yeah so the wheel cal the caliper was
just flopping around dude up and down and they're like what has this thread pattern they're looking
it up whatever and the only thing that you know they could they found was it was a they took a
lug nut off the rear wheel of the bmw and use that as all the light bolt yeah and then he was able to
find it like a nap or something in town there at lunch and replace it with a proper bolt yeah he
was wrenching on in front of the restaurant oh at an ace hardware he pounded an ace yeah yeah yeah
nice yeah um complete electrical failure on the oh electrical failure yes i think it might be due
to the kill switch but can't get to it without lifting the car waiting for triple a so i was in
tatterson which is just on it right on the valley from the bay area so he made it a little ways
for sure um all right well man we've gone really long but uh we still have time for one trivia
question it's trivia time all right we talked about the key of soul being dead right sad times
but there's another car we talk about it non-stop it's never forget every time we hang out it's
like we can't get away from this topic you know um but another car that we've actually been mentioning
recently as like what happened to those things is officially dead what is it what happened to those
things fiesta oh close focus yes the ford focus st is officially dead on the other side of the
board like announced that they were not going to make cars anymore that's what i said after nearly
20 years of reductions the final ford focus st in europe has been manufactured and the popular hot
compact look like the new one let me see it's not great it's it's pretty boring it looks like
you could slap a Hyundai badge on it real quick um yeah you got it that's it and that's all but
yeah we were talking about focus rs's and sts that just we i felt like when we started the podcast
they were super popular or like a little bit afterwards there was just like wow this new
hot hatch from ford and they're making two of them and everyone's buying them and loves them and
they're seem great and then now they're just like gone like no they've got a bunch on rallies we had
one st focus st on this rally yeah richard brought it rich you know which just feels like we uh it's
like kind of one of those weird cars that was really popular like if it was a graph it'd be like
yeah you know off the graph for a while now it's just like humbled and there's a plummeted
i meant to say and now there's don't make him anymore gone times dude so i know hot hatches
that's it sad times well um we have we have the closer range classic to look forward to
yeah we're gonna have an announcement about that very soon i actually meant to make an
announcement at the rally meeting on sunday i kind of i announced the dates on our instagram
no the dates are good but it has a whole new name and a whole new the way it's running yeah
so we'll be talking about that soon but it's exciting may first through the third right yep
and technically we might have a thursday night thing too so the 30th i believe yeah exactly 30th
through april 30th through may 3rd and this is 1999 and older cars older the better and
it's going to be fun so now you know check it out mark those calendars yeah save the date
okay mar that's it bye bye
