#27 - Monday Minute | Takes Years to Build, a Minute to Destroy
About this episode
Reputation is framed as the independent dealer’s most valuable asset—built over years, but damaged in minutes. The hosts argue against racing to the bottom on price, saying low margins leave no room for goodwill repairs, customer venting, or proactive problem-solving when issues inevitably happen. They emphasize review management: respond to every Google review, thank positives, address complaints professionally, and ensure one person owns post-sale issues. Homework includes auditing recent reviews for trends and tightening the resolution process so problems don’t turn into viral stories.
Welcome to the Monday Minute – your weekly reset to lead better, think clearer, and build your independent dealership with intention.Your reputation takes years to build and about a minute to damage. You can have the cleanest lot, the best inventory, and a solid team – but if you are racing to the bottom on price and have no margin left when things go wrong, you are one bad review away from a story you cannot unwrite. And in the independent dealer world, that story travels fast.In this episode, Jeff and Luke get into why your reputation is one of the most valuable – and most fragile – assets on your balance sheet. Jeff makes the case against being cheap: not just because low margins hurt profitability, but because thin deals leave you no room to take care of customers when cars have issues, misunderstandings happen, or someone just needs to vent. Great dealers build in enough margin to have options – goodwill repairs, honest conversations, and someone on the payroll who is actually good at handling the hard moments. Luke breaks down the Google review process that separates operators who manage their reputation from the ones who find out about problems when it is already too late. Who responds to every review – the good ones, the bad ones, and the ugly ones? Who owns post-sale complaints? Because unresolved complaints do not disappear. They become stories, reviews, and sometimes viral posts.Your assignment this week: pull up every Google review you have received over the last few months and look for trends. If the reviews started sliding, ask what changed – recon, sales, F&I, something else. Respond to the ones that need a response. Evaluate your resolution process and make sure one person owns it start to finish. Then ask yourself an honest question: are you making enough margin to actually take care of customers when things go wrong? Because if you are not, you will pay for it eventually – just not on a line item you can see.Review this week's Sunday newsletter at TheIndependentDealer.com for the full theme and exercises. Not subscribed yet?
