Colt from C Builds It joins Snail Trail 4x4 to talk about his off-road roots, learning by tearing things apart, and how he turned that into YouTube and sponsorships. The conversation covers his win in the OnX Off-Road Build Challenge with a leaf-sprung S10, what it took to make it dependable, and how it performed on tough trails and Ultimate Adventure. They also preview his next project: an AMC Pacer Speed build aimed at Baja-style racing, plus his plans for rock crawling and trail advocacy.

Tyler and Jimmy talk to Colt from Colt Builts it YouTube channel. He discusses his past from growing up in an off-road family with his dad building Scouts to starting a family young. Growing up he tossed a few videos on YouTube before there were even monetization opportunities and they did quite well. His name grew when he was a part of BleepinJeep but he wanted to build more than Jeeps. Like this build for the OnX Off-road Build Challenge where he builds an AMC Pacer into a RockCrawlers go fast rig.

Welcome 1. Welcome all to the snail trail
pour by 4 podcast. If you like going
up operating a foot is wrench Toyota camping in pandas, and maybe even poke a little bit of this and of course, hearing about how great C tens are. To they're kinda like playlist.
Then this is the podcast for you. That's
right Ladies and Germs. My name is Tyler.
Joining me for another episode to sn travel by 4 podcast podcasts is the 1 and only Jim.
Hey buddy? I'm good. Thank you. Thanks for
asking. You're welcome. I'm... I like asking. I
like to know. Yeah. I'm happy. So it
has nothing to do with. I just have
a script memorized. Yeah. Or is that you
care. Or that I carry either. So, yeah.
Man. We got a fun episode for everybody
today. We just got done interviewing
cult from c builds it. And so we had
a lot of fun talking about a lot of different topics actually. Went really long. So
we're gonna keep the intro pretty short and sweet today.
I think that's a good idea. And so
with that, we'll take a quick break. It's just k.
We always have a giveaway away stuff going on service those out. You guys should know
what those are by now, how to get involved with them by now. If you don't
go back and listen to the previous intro, and you'll get an idea of what the monthly giveaway is, the reviews giveaway for a set of Yokohama tires.
We've got A big topic of today's episode is On off road, and we have an elite membership with Onex Off road up for grabs 2 with the review giveaways.
We have... What it... What is the monthly
give way this month? The E.
Throttle control. That's right. Thank you. And that
is we've had a few listeners reaching out.
Cool asking about those. Yeah. They sound like,
phenomenal thing. I can't wait to put 1
in the tacoma. Yeah. So we need to
get to AU1 for the Tacoma I need to get 1 on the Bro and play around more with it. But we
have a couple on some other company vehicles that have been awesome to see the features and play around with. So if you guys do
have questions about throttle controls, please write in, let us know because I know that there's a company out there that have given throttle control is a pretty bad rap in the off road industry and the offered road communities industry are kinda wary of throttle controllers now.
And these ones are are pretty sweet. And
there's a big reason why because they're not plugging into your Ob 2 at all. Okay.
And they're not nice messing, and there's no potential to fuck up your Can bus system.
On your vehicle. Okay. So
that's 1 of the main reasons why I really like ultimate 9 and what they're doing.
So right in, if you have questions, we can get them answered for you guys and give you some stuff. We are definitely working
on setting up the infrastructure, and I'll let everybody know once those are live. And ready to
go on the website. We can get you
1 manually input though if you're interested. So...
Cool. There's those,
we got a bunch of stuff going on.
We're always super active trying to find ways to, connect you guys with different fun brands out there. And this episode is is another
way to do that. So, with our partnership
with On off Road, we've been getting to sit down and chat with some other people that are involved with On off Road, it just seems like the the people that On has chosen to partner up with are all super rad, really cool personalities that just loves cars and offered recreation? Absolutely. I'm just gonna
go out on a limb and say Onyx off road does an excellent job at venting possible a partnership. That is true. Yeah. Yeah.
I'm very sure. Yeah. It's and not and
I say that specifically because that's a pad on our back. I was gonna say because
that's really more of a selfish thing. Get
right.
Got it No, but it's a hundred percent true. I mean, they they do partner with
some phenomenal people, the people that are doing really good things in the industry. Mh. Just
like C is doing... I mean, he hit...
When we started talking to the I... And
to be bluntly honest, I mean, both you, and I didn't know much about C before we started this interview. No. Right? And just
talking to him right at the very beginning of the episode where he starts talking about how he just loves learning and teaching and giving good information out there. I was like,
yeah. This guy gets it. You know, It's
we're we're both all on the same line here and you know, he's doing some really cool stuff. Yep. So without further ado, let's
learn a little bit about those cool things that Cult is doing, and we'll take a quick break. To grab some coffee, grab your
popcorn, grab your snacks and grab a snickers because this is a doo, kind of a longer episode but there's a lot of really cool stuff we get to touch on with him. So
we'll be right on mac with C from C built it.
Before we underground website just got an upgrade.
Come on by and check out the new functionality, new photos and new pricing.
Finally works on mobile 2. Visit 4 wheel

Welcome back.
Everybody to the podcast, we have a a fun interview for everybody today.
We have already talked to Nate about the On x build challenge. Right Jimmy?
Yes. We have. And so we thought it'd
be a lot of fun to talk with all of Nate competition to see who's gonna win and see if there's any over under and Betty going on with the On x build challenge. So, getting
to talk to everybody. Well we'll, we'll, maybe
we'll run, like, a poll or post afterwards and be, like, who's gonna win between colton nate and everybody else. So we have here
on the line We got we got cult.
Air in the virtual studio today? C from
C builds it. How's it going? Man. Say
hi to everybody.
Yeah. Great. Thanks. Thanks for having me out
here. This is cool. I'm I've been excited
to to do a podcast. You guys are
actually my first podcast I've ever been on.
So... Wow. Up in scary it's what we
do. Yeah. We do. I've got a podcast
in the air. Okay.
That's cool, man. Yeah. Podcasts are a lot
of fun. It's a it's a it's a
fun medium where there's not a lot of video editing typically.
So that's that's really why you like it.
Yeah.
As a Youtuber, and myself and you are as well for C builds it. And, you know how much,
time it takes to do video editing. Prep
and everything, and Man, I I'd... I think
I have over 250 videos on the snail trail 4 by 4 Youtube channel. And then
I found podcasting, and I'm like, this is so much easier. And it you still hit
of a good audience.
Good fun audience. Now the monetization side isn't
as there as much, But Mh. Yeah. There's
no audio or video that I need to be editing is just all audio, so it works out pretty well.
Well, I think we all do it for the love of it anyway more than anything.
Surgery true. I... I've I've I had a
much higher paying job before Yeah absolutely. So, speaking of pain job, let's
let's wheel the wheels backwards a little bit here, let's talk about you.
How about where do you grow up? What
you... What was fine family dynamics like back
in the day? How do you get off
road? Yeah. Yeah. So I mean, I grew
up... We didn't we weren't, like,
I wouldn't say we were poor, but we didn't have a lot of money. I went
to school. I grew up in Colorado, Central
Colorado.
And I actually couldn't stand school honestly. I I
wanted to get out, and I graduated early, just so that I could get out.
And start working because I work every job you could imagine growing up from working in lumber yards to doing heating and air conditioning and plumbing and anything that I could do to make money, I had... I loved off road. My dad
was into off road and growing up. Like,
even before I was born I kept this so I could remember what what year it was, but he was the...
He was a race director for Rocky Mountain Off road racing Association in the seventies. 19 77. Wow. So.
So, yeah. He was into off road. He
did the ice racing even In fact, in fact, if you've ever looked at the ice racing rules in Colorado, like, we're race in Georgetown and stuff, there's there's actual rules there. 1 of them says you
are not allowed. And... Because you have 3
different classes. You have Bare Rubber studded and
then the cheater class where we can do whatever.
And in the study class, he had ordered Alaskan snow studs, and that is still a rule to this day that you cannot run those. He didn't
even win. He couldn't afford... There they're just
longer studs. They're, like, 2 inches long as
opposed to just getting a little little tire studs. Mh. And so he could just get
him on the outside of his tires on his studded snow tires.
And he didn't even win that race. But but,
yeah, I was kinda funny after that, Like, they they made it a rule that you can't run Alaskan studs. But he had to
keep the paperwork and show, like, these these are called studs. They fall, you know, and
that's way racing is. Right? You're always pushing
the limits of the rules. So you can't
get mad when people... Like, you get mad internally, but
you can't physically get mad.
Because racing is just like any other sport, you know, they're always gonna push the limits.
What it is. But.
But, yeah. So I grew up doing that
and had actually had got married to my wife, and we had...
We had our first daughter really young. Actually,
she graduated high school pregnant with our daughter.
Mh.
So I had... I was forced to grow
up pretty quite immediately. Yeah.
And I was in into dirt biking and off road. I had a couple deer sponsors.
I was actually racing in the Sr c.
And I was pretty good. I wasn't great.
I was, like, I would be, like, fifth to eighth in in the pro class. And
I remember the guy that got first all the time. There was times where I turn
around, you know, in some of those longer longer moto and he be behind me. And
I'm like, man, this dude... Like, I'm I'm
not that far from the top, and this dude's behind me. And I remember he went
Pro May. This is in the area of
Jeremy Mcgrath.
And in Anaheim, I watched him get lap twice by Jeremy Mcgrath. And that's why do I
had 0 ability in this sport guess.
And and with having kids, it was kinda like, I could only afford 1 option. It was either, you know, off road,
or dirt biking. And so I stepped over
more to off road and jeep and and and stuff because I knew that I could take my family. And Yeah. The less chance
of me getting hurt, you know, you get mashed up on a dirt bike and you're laid up. You're not working and then he
can't feed your family. So... Yeah. Well what
does that adage with age comes a cage?
Right? Yeah. So
So, yeah, I just got, you know, kind of stepped over completely into off road, but my dad was a big part of that.
You know, he was for a while there.
He was a mach in the air force he put 38 years in the air force.
And... Wow.
And so, like, he was making C tire rods and stuff like that before like, because off of... He working on airplanes. So he was
making stuff before it was a thing. Mh.
He's like, yeah, These are super strong, You know, and he'd take his old trucks and he'd take the leaf springs know, before they had lift kits, and he'd put him in a press and actually press every inch of that leaf spring in the press to get an arch out the least doesn't on lift kits.
So, yeah. I learned learned some cool tricks
from him, for sure. What vehicles was he
driving back then? So he had jeep he
did have jeep and then he had he had some blazers and some scouts, and Yeah. He did a lot of... He really
liked the scout because that scout would get 10 miles a gallon no matter what we did. We could be on the highway 10
miles a ago gallon before we on this 10 miles a gallon.
And it was a lot more stable than the Jeep. But I remember he had a
Cj 5 that he actually took... Like the
old school air shocks. You know, like, the
the get... The Gabriel, you know, or Gabriel,
you everyone pronounce it. Air shocks. And he
put them on all 4 corners because we'd be on side hills, and it would, you know, you... The Jeep feel like
they're gonna flip all the time those old Jeep especially. And so he would actually put
an air compressor in there into would air down but the side like, the high side and then air up the low side. So
at least you didn't feel like you were gonna roll.
But, yeah. Just got... Just interesting things like
that. Always push... You know, he's never afraid
to turn anything apart which made me kinda never afraid to tear anything. Sometimes that burn
me. I'm about, like, I'm batting 500 for
transmission rebuild fraud matters but hey, 500 is great for baseball terms man.
You you doing good it. Yeah.
Yeah. No. It it was, you know, that's
kinda what got me into it and I worked at 4 old parts. You know, my dad tommy
had to do gears and stuff, and, like, you know, and then I did that for a while and had my own off road shop for a little while in in South Dakota, and and Yeah. It did a lot of
did a lot of... That was kind of
my thing was the drivetrain stuff. I didn't
really like working... I mean, I should say,
like, axles and suspension. Those are the things
I like. I like doing axles and suspension.
I don't really like tearing apart motors and transmissions as much. I don't mind doing tea
cases.
There a lot of... You know, done a
lot of transfer cases. Mh. Built
I had a 87 4 runner that the back end was smashed up got it for 800 bucks in in Denver. And
the thing road great and the rest the body was in good shape. But just the
back end had a dent in it, and they had pulled the bolt for the topper.
So the window didn't go up. You know,
in those all in those all 4 run.
There's a bolt there that keeps it puts a sensor to let you know if the tops off or not. And I was like,
man, the Top doesn't even, you know, the window doesn't even roll up and. So I
talked them down 800 bucks.
And check it out to my house and and divide and built it outside. I had a single car garage that
was about the size of a shed.
They could just hold my tools basically. So
I built the whole truck outside, but put did 1 tons under it. Did dual toy
cases.
You know, did A47 gear set in it and and 05:13 gears in the axles and, you know, 04:14 bolt and a 60 that I got from an old farmer for a couple hundred bucks. You know, he didn't know,
you know, that back when people, you know, everybody now, the Internet ruins everything kinda, like, everybody knows what you have, You know, they think they know what they have in value.
But yeah. Put it put the truck on some
42 inch Ts cells and that truck did awesome. Like, it was... That's a model.
Yeah. Yeah. But it was geared solo. You
know, I let the kids drive it when they were little and and I did a lot of trails with that.
Like, a lot of what people would consider buggy trails with that old fore runner. Mh.
What I learned though, the difference between a Jeep and a Toyota is rocks like the body panels at Toyota. Like, they'll just jump
out and smash them. Like... Yep. You can't
have a toyota to erased place the old ones, You know, the old ones say, for some reason, they just like to raise those things Yep. It's kinda it's kinda like you
don't really actually have an old school Toyota unless all your body panels are raised up.
So... Right. Yeah. It's a it's
I'm I'm actually working on wrapping my 4 runner right now, and the the poor vinyl rap dude. He was like, I don't
know what I'm gonna do with all these dents. He goes he goes the wraps don't
take count the dead. Like, you... You're gonna
see all the dents still, and it's gonna be... I can I can get it? I
can get the wrap on there. And I
was like no, that's that's good. Like, I
want I want the dents there. Like, that
would... It's not it's not a rock crawling.
Unless there's all these body panels dented. And
he he kinda went back and forth and was looking at... That me, like, I was
crazy. I was like, dude just just do.
It'll be fine I'm not gonna hold the thing against you. Is he charging you more
because now there's more corners that he has to wrap Surprisingly, I don't think so. I
don't Maybe he was just click on his feet 1.
But yeah. So it's a it's just it's like
a rite a passage for old Toyota to have all those dents. So
I I agree completely. Yet. And like I
said, it it... It's only the first dent
that really hurts, you know, you have no vehicle and you're like, and then once you get that dent, you're like, okay. Don't care
anymore. Yeah. Exactly. I'm just gonna go with
it. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. If we were just
literally talking about that in the lobby earlier today, and I was saying, like, I really don't want to dent the truck. But if
it happens, Yeah oh, well.
Yeah.
Yeah. Once you get it, then it's... Then
you just... Okay. I just gotta deal with
it now. Right. Yeah. Is that like ducks
in the Gp world?
I pretty much really, man. I talked to
But, you know, what's?
Very often. I... You know, I got I
got cherokee and and you know, the the s 10. So and
samurai. So when I do get Duck, actually,
my wife got Ducks. So I did get...
I bought a cheap a cheap jeep Jk from a dealership. They thought that the frame
was rotten, and they had just had a another old wrangler that the frame actually was rotten. And they
kinda... I I think they might have got
lemon on it or something. And so they
looked underneath it. It was a trade in,
and my buddy worked at the dealership across the street. And, you know, our dealerships are,
like, it's family owned and then they own 7 different dealerships, but... Mh. But
And he tells me he's like, hey, man.
They're selling... You know, I told him if
they ever found a jeep a cheap Jeep Jk a 4 or Jk, let me know.
And And he's, like, man this thing's got a hundred and...
At the time I think, a hundred and 20000 miles on it, and they want 6 grand for it because they looked underneath it, and they thought frame was rotten. And ended
up just being the gas tank skid was totally approached. And it was rotten.
But but the frame was fine. Like, the frame
was totally fine. The way those gas tank
skid are, they just hold dirt and if you never wash it, they're just gonna get ruined. So
change that. And then, I'm curious what tech
looked under the jeep, saw the gas tank skid rotten and was like, oh, the frame is fucked.
Like, what this what It's a sure it was probably just... I'm
sure it's probably just a salesman more than anything, but cheap.
But yeah. I got that jeep for 6000
bucks and got us, you know, just got another skid from a salvage yard. And then
and then we put a little lift on it and some other things, but my wife was driving it and I come home and she's like, man, the the Jeep making this horrible rattling noise. I don't know what it
is.
And so I'm walking... You know, I drive
it and I can hear it, and I walk... I... So I I pull over and
I walk around the jeep, and somebody had put a duck on a key chain, like a hard plastic duck.
On the on the antenna, and it was...
And so it slowed down the antenna, and it was flat of the side the... And
actually scratched up and, like, though Like, left big old stars on the side of the jeep, and I was I was actually pissed.
I was like, man, I hate Ducks. Like,
Just makes me mad.
That's funny. But, you know, like, some somebody
was trying to be cute and ruined my wife's jeep. So
Yeah. That's yeah. That's crazy. There's people I
see that just absolutely despise them and there's people that, like, flo them and have them covered on their dash. Oh, yeah yeah it.
I couldn't imagine getting in a wreck and getting a black eye from a duck.
Or get 1 of the hard plastic stick ones to the face or to the temple or something a death by duck. What do
those people trying glue them down. So when
they go off road If they if they go off road, they don't fall all off.
Like, I don't know.
Yeah.
Yeah. I don't know. It's
you know, in that in that same breath, it it it's whatever. I think if people enjoy it,
let them enjoy it. But for me, it's
really not my thing, you know, I'm not gonna I'll I'll I'll give, you know, what, like, Onyx sent me some ducks and I handed them out to people and things like that.
But but Yes. It's definitely not really my my cup
of tea. It's more of a... Like, if
you go to the mall, you want ducks.
Yeah. I don't go to the mall. So.
Well, it's also... I mean, like it or
not, the point that I think you've made or we're getting to was that it ends up creating a community, and it's almost having Ducks has created 2 communities, people that love the ducks People I hate the ducks. So people that hate the
Ducks can send each other all the memes of people like, ripping the Ducks heads off and throw them across the parking lots and stuff. So we can enjoyment from Right? While
the other community gets enjoyment of giving people ducks and getting ducks and we're just like, yeah. Let's just destroy a ducks. So.
So So do they not give ducks to cherokee?
Oh, no. Now. Cherokee with trash cans of
Jeep man.
And I got a nice 1 like, I...
We have a cherokee. We in the studio.
I remember a Toy jerk up here on the wall, so it's a... Oh, not. Oh,
yeah. There you go. Dumpster. Listen.
Fair.
I... That's actually how I fed my off
road addiction prior, you know, previous to Youtube because, you know, Youtube been around for what, like, 13 years an now or so. Mh.
Is I would buy cherokee because they were cheap.
And that's how, like, I could hold my family in a cherokee. And then
realistically, having the coils in the front, leaf springs in the back. They're, you know, pretty
decent out of the box. And
I bought 1 for a dollar 1 time.
That they couldn't figure out the overheating issues.
They put a new water pump in a new thermostat and a new radiator, and they... It was just overheating They couldn't
figure out what ended up being was those old Roanoke Jeep, the the lower radiator hose had a coil in it. Right.
And so you'd grab the... Yeah. So you
could grab the radiator hose, and it felt like it was good.
But when you pulled it out, the coils what kept it feeling good felt stiff, but it was collapsed completely on the inside of the radiator hose. So I changed it out
with, like, a 15 dollar hose, and then I was able to sell it for, you know, 1500 bucks and made a huge profit a 1500 percent profit. I'm not sure. Yeah.
And and just that story you might have just solved Tyler's overheating problem. Yeah. I have a big overheating
issue, and I'm about to the 400 for a dollar 2. I'll buy it.
I've... It's considered sold already.
But yeah. So, like, you know, that... Especially
the Ren ones, they were, you know, they had a lot of wiring issues. I bought
a wiring diagram form them and And I would buy them and and then flip them I'd fix them. You know, it's been
at the most, maybe 500 bucks for them and then flip them and make you know, make a thousand bucks, make 800 bucks on them. And you know, that, like, for the
cherokee, especially, you know, the the crank shaft position sensor that sits on the backside of the transmission on the top of the transmission. That was super common for those.
And then, like the Gm the old throttle body Gm. It was your...
Like, it's it's an ignition module basically that sits underneath your distributor. And
And so they would just die.
And this is the same issue for both rigs, but it they would just die, and then people be like, I don't know, and then it would start and then it would die again, and and it's just this 1 simple, you know, 15 20 dollar part at the time. And
you could just change it out and then it fix it. So...
That's kinda how I fed my fed my off road payments is is doing that. Right. Sure. And
then have it know, just doing all these random jobs growing up, You know, I kinda like the the Roosevelt motto, Jack of all trades, master and none.
Yeah. That's kinda how I learned
how to work just work on stuff. It's
funny. How, a lot of... It seems like
that's a very common theme in the operating world, especially the rock crawling world. Right? It's
a lot of people who just love working with their hands and have a lot of random knowledge about how things work.
And they're able to, Mc ge and put vehicles back together after we destroy them on our trips. So...
Well, starting a family at, you know, when you're 19 years old, you know, you... You're poor. Yeah. So Yeah.
It's either it's either fix it or die.
Because that's how you getting work and pay your bills. So
You know, my wife and I were... We
were really... I mean, we had a a
little single wide trailer that was built in the, I think 64 19 64. Mh.
And and I took a loan out for it for 4000 bucks, and I remember thinking how am I gonna be able to afford this loan, You know, and it was whatever the payment was was dumb, You know, But how am I gonna be able to afford this, and there were times even where we couldn't afford? Because the lot rent in the
trailer park we lived in had you know, electricity and everything water was all part of the lot rents. I don't have
worry about that. But, like, propane I did.
And grown up, you know, live Colorado gets cold in the winter. Mh. And so there
were times where I couldn't afford propane, so we would bundle our daughter. Our son wasn't
born yet, but we'd bundle our daughter and her and my wife and up and... Because
it's just a... It's technically a 2 bedroom
1 bath trailer.
But it was more like a closet and then, like, a bigger closet.
And then a bathroom. Mh. And so we'd
we'd bundle up with her and blankets. And
then I'd I get 1 of those radiant heaters that the plug in radiant heaters, oil style heat. And I'd put that in front
of the door. And I just drained the
water and then know, kinda turn the water off to the trailer, and then that's how we would sleep some nights in the winter because we just couldn't afford propane. So.
But yeah. So it's like, you know, you
kinda learn how to do it. Yeah Yeah.
Center. You know, I can't afford a mechanics.
So... Yep. Sure. You know
I think for me, I needed to have my kids young. It it, like, it was
forced me to grow up. I had to
probably ended up dead at 25 because I was out of control and I, you, fearless. Mh. Like most kids at
that age. But,
legitimately, fearless. And and so
Yeah. That was a good thing. Good thing
for me and now I got, you know, 2 awesome kids and my daughter, you know, being being in my early forties and already having, you know, a son and and a granddaughter is pretty cool. So I was just having
Yeah. And being able to, like, be young
enough to play with them too.
That's kinda my worry. I waited. I'm 36,
80. I got 8 04:36.
So I'm 36, and I just had my case. He's 4 months old now, and I'm,
you know, it's it's, you know, nice because I waited so long, so I have the resources to be able to take care of him and provide for them and and, you know, have a family comfortably.
But I worry because I'm like, man, I'm gonna be in my fifties, when he's 18 and starting to do all the fun things that that guys do in their their late teens and twenties, and I'm like, alright... Am I gonna be able to
keep up with them? I don't know. So
it's... Well, I can tell you. I can't
keep my son's 20 and I can't keep up with him now, so it doesn't.
Perfect. There we go. But
but... Yeah, It's... They both have their pros
and cons for sure. It'd be, you know,
my brother's in that boat. So my brother
and I are only a year apart, and, you know, his kids are just a few years old. So Mh. It's
you know, I I think I scared him into being being afraid of girls and kids and tell he was later in life. But
but, yeah, that's it. Yeah. Good Thank. Yeah.
Yeah. It's and it's both ways. Like I
said, that they both have their pros and cons for sure. I, you know, being financially
stable to have your kids is probably a good thing as well.
For sure. Yeah. It's a it's... Yeah. It's...
You know, what is the saying? Half a
dozen 1 way. Half of it does the other?
I don't know whatever takes. My half a
is you got. Man. I got you. It's
not like throwing cats across your footage.
Julie's cliches. So what what moves so you
had these early, You know, you had a child early. You were doing odd jobs. You
were, you know, flipping cherokee to make some cash.
That started the off road career. How did
you move from that into Youtube?
Well, so I did I did make some early early Youtube videos. Like I... We took
some videos. And
before Youtube was monetized.
Yeah. And they actually did really good, like,
at the time. I mean, I'm talking, like,
2800 to 6000 views, you know, the beginning of Youtube. Yeah. Because
I was doing stuff, that other Youtubers weren't, you know, like Carnage Canyon and Bun vista had just, like, just opened up. And so
I was doing trails like that, which I got to help know, kinda put that trail in and and help work on...
I've helped put in a lot of trails over the years too. You know, people
people are kinda anti 4 drive clubs, and I'm gonna tell you that I've lost trails that I worked on because the National Forest and Beyond they don't recognize single entity. They
recognize companies here or or organizations associations and and organizations. And so
I learned the hard way that if you wanna keep a trail, you have to you have to be part of a 4 drive club, and you have to be part of ones. There's a lot of ones out there
now that they're just get together, you know, drink beer and do... And and 4 wheel,
but the ones that are actually proactive in the off road community, putting in trails, marking trails. It's a 6 to 10 year process
to put a trail in and... A lot
of people don't know that. And so...
But... Yeah. So it kinda worked out that
way for the Youtube side, You know, as as doing some stuff, and it was doing really good, but it wasn't paying any bills.
So I didn't focus on it a whole lot. I learned how to edit and make
things like that. And as I went forward,
I just... I got into the oil field,
and I stayed in the oil field for a long time. And so the nice thing
about that is I could work hard.
And then on my 2 weeks off, I could work on my rig and then take the family 4 wheel, You know? So,
you know, and to end and be able to you know, try these harder things and, you know, you know, every time you build a rig, you're like, the next 1 I'm gonna build, I'm gonna change this and this.
You know? So
So that's... You know, I've I've I owned
I owned so many vehicles at 1 point that the state of Colorado actually sent me a letter saying if I auto sold another vehicle, I'd have to get a dealer license.
And half the vehicles I wasn't even changed in the title over into my name like, yeah.
I anchored.
But yeah, that's you know, so so step forward, quite a few years. My dad was
a heavy... He he recently passed away, but
he was a heavy Youtube watcher. He really
enjoyed watching Youtube, watching people build stuff. I mean,
even grown up like we watched, extreme 4 by 4, You know, like and John, you know, and and and and jesse and and, yeah, back in the day. And
and you know, and some, you know, like, 4 wheeler Tv and think, you know and and Scott or what was the super lifts off road adventures that Trent Mcgee did. You know.
Yeah. And yeah, some of that stuff and
that... And so
you know, he he liked watching that on Youtube as well.
And he told me he's like, hey, you know, bleep and Jeep Matt is looking for an f c.
And looking for an Fc.
And I was actually headed across the country. We lived in South Dakota
at the time. And
and we lived up there for about 12 years. And I was headed across the country
with an empty trailer because I was buying, I I had sold 1 of my rigs to buy a twisted customs Buggy.
And my buddy, Jason Poly owns, twisted customs.
And, you know... Anybody knows anything about, like,
old school rock crawling.
Twist customs kinda set the stage. For bug.
Right? They set the stage for link design,
and Bug ease. And that's where, you know,
like, Red dot and and even Jesse hands a of these guys kinda, you know, followed into that. Okay. We need to build them
like this, and and they've taken it to the next level, of course. But twisted customs
definitely started. Well, I had this guy. Was
gonna sell me a a buggy, and I was I was like, oh, man Cool. You
know, We had a handshake deal on it.
I sold my rig, and then he backed out.
With the agreement that I'd have to sell my rig. So
so he backed out.
And so now I was buggy. And I
was, man, I need something like now because I'm losing my mind. And Tim Cameron had
a a little rear steer Samurai.
And so, you know, and he lives out Tennessee. So I just messaged Matt and said,
hey, you know, if you're if you're picking something up from this side of the country, I'm heading over with an empty trailer.
And So, you know, he got back with me and and then said that, yeah. I got 1, you know,
in Utah, if you wouldn't mind picking it up, you know, I could pay you the difference going down to Utah and grabbing it.
So I went down to Utah grabbed it, went out there, and then we kinda hit it off actually realizing that he had kids young as well.
We're both the same age and, you know, both obviously kinda started on Cherokee.
Whole lot of it was on cherokee. And,
yeah. And then that kinda just spiral from
there.
I was still in the oil field and then doing Youtube and then when when the oil tank for the last time, you know, it was getting the was just like, you know what? I can stay with Youtube and
just try to make this work. And then
that kinda how how that worked. But I've
always you know, even in the oil field as I moved up, you know, you learn how to teach people stuff. You really wanna...
You know, I want... The more people know,
like, I like knowledge.
And so if I can share knowledge, even...
Like I said, you know, my motto for my channel is there's the right way to do it the wrong way to do it and the way I do it. So and,
like, I understand saying that I'm doing it the right way. I'm just saying this works
for me. And
so, like, You know, you learn... You kinda learn how
to... You know, if you've ever been a
a boss or a manager, you learn immediately that you're more than just a boss or a manager. You're also
you know, you're also, you know, a teacher.
You're also a psychiatrist, sometimes you're also, you know, like, all kinds of things, especially in the oil field because these guys are away from their families for a long time and there's all kinds issues with that and And so you you learned to really try to help people out, and I've always liked helping people out.
And so with the Youtube side, I was like, what I wanted to do was, you know, share history, share my knowledge, but also see if I can help people out if somebody's like, hey. You know, like I just
recently not too long ago did a video that didn't really do that great. I was
like, I'm gonna do it anyway. I knew
it wouldn't take off, but it was just had a d to tire, basically on c to tire. Mh. And I had a lot
of... But older guys messaged me and say,
man, there were some ways that you showed me that I didn't... You know, I've been
doing this my whole life and didn't know that I could change this, you know, pop a tire off a bead this way. So
so that kind of stuff I I like that a lot. You know, when people kind
send you private messages and say, hey, you know, you really helped me or or or even like, you know, there's a of people that say that you need changed their life.
Like, you're the reason they get up in the morning and stuff. And that's that's huge.
Just like, man, I did not realize I was making an impact like that. And it's
Yeah. That's that's just, like, you know, he
gives you all the field goods. That's absolutely
like... That's it keeps you good motivation Keep
going. Yeah. I had a video where I
was just... I was doing an upgraded suspension
on a fore runner, and I just said something nonchalant.
I was, like, hey, whenever you pull a tire off, just throw it underneath the vehicle so that if randomly the vehicle falls off Jack stands, it falls onto the tire, instead of on to you underneath. And I
had a guy messaged me and said, you saved my life.
I was working on my vehicle in the driveway. It fell off Jack stands. It fell
onto the tires. I got bruised up and
banged up, but I was able to climb out from underneath the vehicle, and I was like, Oh my gosh. Like,
Like, I can't... Like, I saved somebody's life
just by saying something randomly on Youtube. You
know, it's it's pretty wild and crazy, and I'm so thankful I was able to help.
No. Yeah. For sure. That I wish I
would thought about that when I was, like, 20 because I was doing a suspension on a a grand cherokee And like I said, I was doing everything out in the granite under dirt on a hill.
And my jack stands collapsed underneath themselves and the rear bumper landed right in the middle of chest. Oh, shit. And I couldn't breathe that
I was trying to scream and every time I try to scream I lose more oxygen out of my lungs, and I ended digging myself out to the point, like, just digging with 1 hand that I had free and got climbed out underneath it or, you know, because the least the the where the frame hit the ground, and then I just dug myself out underneath, but I could barely breathe.
I barely had enough oxygen to get it through it. Oh. Got out of
They feel like is big old bruise on my sternum. Yeah. Holy crap.
That's crazy.
Wow Yeah. You learn... You you make mistakes
and you learn from those. That's that's the
biggest thing. I think people think that you
you have knowledge and it's like, most of the time your knowledge comes from personal experience of your own mistakes.
Yeah.
So here in the recent future, you actually left Bleep in Jeep, and you moved on to start your own Youtube channel. Do you
wanna talk a little bit about, oh, why that happened end? Yeah. Well, you know, the
the biggest thing was it was just time to move on to my own. I I
was pushing a lot of you know, bleep and Jeep is kinda pigeon hold into Jeep.
And every time I built something that was non jeep, you know, I would get... I'd get a
decent amount of flack for it.
Interesting. Okay. Yeah. Just because, you know, well,
this isn't a Jeep why am I watching bleep and Jeep, You know? And it's like,
Yeah. But I'm still showing how to work
on vehicles. I'm still showing you how to.
Like, I could be designing... Literally, like, I
redesigned my entire suspension on that you know, that samurai I got from Tim Cameron was set up more to jump and it wasn't set up to rock crawl. And so
I redesigned that entire. So suspension and redesign
the cage and redesigned, you know, and made all new things and showed people how to do that, and I get flack for it because it wasn't a jeep.
And so, you know, it's like, man. Yeah.
I'm, you know, I wanna build stuff. I
wanna show people out to build stuff. You
know? I think Yeah.
Understand the system. And once you once you
really understand how that system works like a suspension system or your axle system, then you can apply it at all or ever... Any
vehicle, Any any platform. So...
Yeah. That was my motivation for the S
10 last year was You know, last year, the the winner got to go to ultimate. An ultimate deb adventure
have been on my bucket list for forever.
The problem with ultimate deb adventures is it's very expensive. Mh. You know, it... It's very
expensive to travel wherever they're gonna go get those hotel rooms, get all the, you know, and and if fuel, and then if you break parts and you need parts.
And so I knew that if I could represent On Off Road, I would have the opportunity to maybe have them kinda foot some of that bill, and that's kinda how that worked out. But
that was hoping that, you know, I've always wanted to do ultimate adventure, so that was on my list, and I was motivated, very, very motivated for that build. And I
knew that starting with an s 10, I hadn't seen, you know, me and my brother built a sonoma years and years ago, solved axle swapped it, you know, and did all that. So I knew what it would
take to make that. And
I just hadn't seen anybody build an s 10 in a long time. So that's the
old you know, the mini squares.
Yeah. And I was like, you know, lee
springs still work good. Like, you're not gonna
get the same flex you get with links and coil overs and all that, but you can build a leaf spring suspension. Mh. You
know, like I said, my old 4 runner, like we're talking about earlier. You know, I
did you know, Carnage. I did Boulder Canyon.
I did, you know, tons of, like, extreme, you know, captain Crunch, you know, which is probably, you know, and crunch and boulder candidates on the toughest trails in the country in my opinion. And,
you know, did those with leaf Springs. You
know, a 4 runner on leaf Springs. Mh,
you know, At granted, I want 1 tons.
But but, you know, so you don't have to have the fanciest suspension, and that's why I was motivated to build that rig on as much of a budget as I could, You know, and you can pick those s tens up. You can still pick them
up cheap, Like, they're just cheap trucks, and they got a decent flat form Drivetrain train wise. You know, you got, you know, 4.3
you know, and then depending on your transmission, you know, a decent a decent 5 speed or or the 700 R 4 and then at 02:31, which 02:30 ones are, you know, they've held up to a lot of stuff.
You know, they're not the strongest transfer case in the world by any means. But usually,
when guys break them, it's because of 1 or 2 things that they're bolts are loose or they didn't have fluid in it.
Right. Yeah.
Yeah. The the 4 3 is such an
awesome, engine power source too. It's a it's
I wish that it would... There was more
stuff written out there about how to put the 4 3 and utilize it in other vehicles.
Right. Yeah. And it's what's funny too is
like the throttle body is the same as the 03:50.
The... The 4 3 is a chevy 03:50
minus 2 cylinders. Same bore stroke.
Same, you, like, same connecting rods, same valve, same everything. Everything else is the same. It's
just short 2 cylinders, You know, And you talk about, like, You know, like, when Tracy Jordan was competing in in We rock, and he had that what they call that the Sc motor that was an Ls, that was chopped in half. You know, there's
he was we're still in AV4 ls. Wow. And it's, like, no wonder, he
was just dominating. You're talking about an aluminum
that chop in half that can has tons of power. Yeah. And you have all the
great engineering because, I mean, you know, you can you can love or hate know, I'm not a vehicle P by any means. I
I think there's a great...
I think every company has great and bad stuff. Mh. And
you know, I'm sorry, but an Ls, anybody can take an L, And you see these kids, you know, what? They'll grab a, you know, a
mile throw a couple Chinese spool boys on there and just go rip down the road and give it all the beans and the thing is still holding up, You know, which is crazy to me. Yeah. It's pretty nuts. Have
you have you seen the new 4 cylinder Ls?
I don't think Have actually no. It's it's
very impressive. The stats that they're claiming from it.
It's something like, horsepower.
And, like, Oh, was a 350 foot pound torque, 300. So I don't have
semi rather there. And it's it's very... And
it's, like, aluminum based blocking and everything. It's super lightweight twin
turbo, I believe. It's... I'm I'm interested to
see it as a crate motor and see what people do with it because it's it's it looks pretty phenomenal, but I haven't heard of anybody getting 1 yet and doing anything with it.
So... Yeah. They're probably a out of the
price range of most of us that are...
They would wanna do some.
But. Right? Yeah. That's... I mean, that's, like,
my perfect my perfect tow truck we would be a ford king ranch cab with cummins and an Alison. So I'd make every curious.
Yeah.
For that.
Oh, it's funny. So the s 10 actually,
won, the build challenge last year. So you
were... Want... I want you to give us
a quick rundown of the build of the S 10, what you kinda did with it.
And then talk a wee bit about the off road challenge.
Yeah. So the way... The way... The only
way I could figure I could sell it on bleep and Jeep was using Jeep Leaf spring, So I went with GYJ front springs. Yep. And that was my selling
point for that. And then, obviously, kinda pitching
that, like, the 5 speeds are kinda interchangeable.
And the 02:30 ones are kind of interchangeable.
The front parts are different, but the guts are the same. And so I went with
old school stuff, ma'am, my brother and I, you know, pirate 4 by 4, you know, there's was a guy that used to make 02:31 double, and that's what we did on his sonoma was 02:31 double. And so that's what I did
on this was, you know, dual up cases, which is, you know, super common for most people with 5 speed transmission Toyota guys, you know, they'll they'll do triple k stuff. So
that's common there. And and, you know, and
same with my samurai, you know, both my samurai had dual cases and they're both manuals as well. But but... Yeah. So, you know,
the the 02:30 ones, I think we're a big hit. That really brought back. There's a
company Fro now that makes those. And
and I bought it. You know, I didn't
ask him for a discount or nothing, and just bought it and ordered it and, you know, and saw what... How, how it showed
up. And, you know, he was I was
almost getting worried that it wasn't gonna show up, and I was gonna have to have machine shop make it because he was not responsive on emails. He was... I was like,
this is... Is this the same dude that
used to be on pirate? Because he was
the same way. Like, you would call him
and he wouldn't answer...
Yeah. It's gonna ship out tomorrow and then
4 months later, it ships since. And
but, you, you know, it ended up showing up, and And then I, you know, did that, and, you know, I found a junkyard axles. So
the the front 60 was you know, it was a snow fighter, you know, the 78 79, which is a rare a rare 60.
And usually, people want stupid money for those.
Fortunately, mine like, the... They were worried that it
might have been bent or twisted because it wasn't a bad fire. Like, there was
everything was melted on it, and it was the second worst smell at... When I pulled that diff cover,
You know like, you're old doesn't smell that great anyway, but it was the second worst 1. Like, I was gag off it And
the worst 1II swear the person pooped in it. Like, I'm I'm just... I'm swear.
It was a guy he... It had some
other dude, another company put the the gears in, and he kept bringing it back to him, and then it was, like, and it kept... They kept putting them in wrong or,
you know, mess them up, mess them up.
And I'm pretty sure those people actually literally pooped in it, put the cover back on and just send them down the road and until gave the finger.
That's why you came to me and then I pulled off the, you know, the poop diff, I think. But but... Yeah.
Like, there's a new pre everybody's at camp.
Right? Particularly. So
So, yeah, you know, that was it was a nasty, nasty rebuild to rebuild that 60, but, you know, that was 1 of the things. Like, Yukon
was 1 of the title, you know, title sponsors, they're elite member for for On. So
you know, I could get every single part that I needed for it. And the rebuild
stuff, as far as the rebuild parts go don't didn't count towards your build on the on that. So.
I could get, like, King pens. I I
actually charge that to the build anyway, but, like, you know, I I could get the King Henry rebuild and, you know, breaks and all that stuff.
And re... You know, So I rebuilt that
axle, you know, inside out, and then and, you know, checked it, and it was true. You know, I didn't have to worry
about it being in dent or nothing, so that worked out. And then, you know, kinda
went on a budget with it.
You know, I've changed the shafts out since, but went with a, you know, I only did the outer stubs, the 35 sp outer stubs Because maybe a lot of people don't know this, but, like, Dana sixties, a lot of them are 30 sp out. Mh. And
they are usually the first thing to break.
And then the second thing the lockout. So that's why I went with
the 35 sp outer and then the and then the Uc yukon lockout.
You know, So I broke, you know, I broke pretty much every lockout out there. In
fact, I've even broke 1 Yukon lockout, but I won't blame Yukon for it.
I had a, a shaft that was too long and it actually caught the lockout because the Yukon lockout sit inward, and it caught the lockout caught at, like, 40 miles an hour. James just ram jammed it. Yeah. It
made it made a pretty rad noise too.
So I all that bad. And I told
probably locked up.
And yeah. It it it broke it pretty good,
but it cooked it at the same time.
But then the rear 14 bolt actually had an Ar ar b and 05:13 gears in it. Wow. And I got it.
The guy wanted a thousand bucks and he was up in Bismarck, North Dakota. This is the time. Nobody
wants to go.
Go right that. Yeah. And and
I was like, man, that's a good deal, but, you know, had crane cover disc brakes, and I was like, yeah. I don't know.
And then he dropped to 800 bucks. Then
he dropped it to 600 bucks.
And I was like, okay. I have a
buddy that lives in Bismarck. I should at
least call them and have him go look at this thing. And it was exactly like
I expected. It had... It did have an
Air ar that the seals were no good. It had
it had gears that weren't set up right.
You know, It had all the stuff But it, you know, it's like, okay. I
gotta rebuild this as well. So it it
was 1 of those situations where, you know, I had to rebuild the entire thing, and then and then put it back together. But
since then, you know, I've probably put...
Gosh, maybe 15000 miles on that s 10, you know, leaf sprung. You know, I showed
people, you know, like, you guys probably know us being Toyota guys. You're, like, the old
school train of thought with Toyota just make know, make your rear shocks into a v.
Mh. You know, reverse v. Mh. And then,
you know, you'll get more flex, but it rides, like, trash and it doesn't actually help your suspension at all. So, like, making your,
you know, your chalk straight and getting them in the outside of your frame rail as close to the outside of your frame rails as you can. And just stuff like that
and you know, moving my... Going down with
1 break line up upfront, and then and then running hard lines across my across my axle and then doing soft lines right at the call.
So you don't catch twig and rocks. Mh.
That's a that's a huge 1. I see
that May I I didn't run into that problem until I went up to South Dakota. So
south Dakota has a lot... They get a
lot of down trees. In the winter. So
in the summer, like, you know, because they close the trails from November to May. So
when you get out there in May, and you're hitting trails early on, there's just tons of debris that comes up and tries to stab your tires or rip out brake lines. So that was
something I actually talked about that I learned from, Jason Paul actually. Hey. You should move
your brake lines down, you know, single on it down the middle and then kick him off and then just have a tiny little break line for your steering. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah.
Cool.
So how was the how was the build challenge then with the S 10? And how
did it do what kind of the the contests you guys were competing in and how did you feel that you... How'd did you
feel the S 10 was gonna do versus how it actually did in the contest?
Well, 1 of the things that I I knew is I was looking at...
I was looking at what Nate was doing.
And I was like, man, you know, he's gonna... You, he's running a solid platform form.
Mh. You know, a a land cruiser already
coil. You know, it's already linked.
You know, run an Rc shafts in it.
I'm like, this is gonna be a good rig. And I didn't know... You know, we
didn't know where we were going yet.
I wanted to just have fun.
You know, I wanted it to be more fun and that guys got a little serious with it. I wanted to just be more
fun. Now
I did have... I... Although I'd had never
done those specific trails and Mont, I did have some home field advantage wheel and Mont, and I feel like Probably wield some harder trails than those guys had seen before, Mh. Just
from wheel harder trails. I was in into hardcore
rock crawling. And
And so... And actually,
way back in the day, when you rock existed, I was a spotter in You rock too for a team Effing and Zoo suzuki.
So I was like, I spotted in that.
My buddy Sheldon was a driver, and I spotted for him a few times as well.
So there was there was that. So I
had you know, some competitive rock crawling experience on top of that. But
they s 10 exactly like I thought, you know, it's leaf sprung rig so you have to drive it like a leaf sprung. Yep
You know, I did some things that were, you know, prepped for it, you know, making the bottom of flat belly, and and, you know, going 1 tons, I think is at advantageous, you know. I think Nate
was, you know, still, you know, Toyota Axles, you can build them as strong as you want. You're on 40 inch tall tires.
You gotta drive, like, you know, just like, building, a, you know, anything. Know, you... You...
If you don't put 1 tons in it, you gotta drive it like the axles that are underneath it. Yeah. And
so you gotta prepare for that. I like
being over built for from what I'm doing. And then I
don't have to worry about it. So that
was kinda of my theory with the s 10.
And, you know, I I did get a little bit, a seat time in it. I didn't
really get to wheel it, but I got the flex it. I got to drive it.
I drove it around. I drove the s
10 around. We'll get for even building it
to make sure that it was halfway dependable.
It didn't have a collapse lower radiator hose.
Yeah. Right.
And you know, our a blown head gasket like naked that.
You know, so it was unfortunate for him.
But, you know, and I saw what Rudy was taken on and and know, I was like, well, he's got a lift and he has a plasma table, so he can do a lot more things and I I had the ability to do in my single car garage.
You you know, a lot of people don't realize too when you're setting up length suspensions.
You gotta tune those, you know, especially with coil overs. Like, it takes a little time.
It's... You're, you know, you're tuning it, you're
working it your flexing in it, and it's a lot of work. And so,
you know, that's that's some of the stuff that why, I was just kinda sticking with the kiss method, you know, keep it simple stupid.
Mh. And
you know, I was I was prepared for it to do well.
You know, when we went to Mont, I was not prepared. I was I was like,
man, we were doing stuff that, like, this was supposed to be kind of an overland trip, and we're doing stuff, that is definitely not. There's no overland running in any trailing
in Mont.
Hands down. Like, there's just not. So that
was 1 of the things that I definitely was like, well, we're gonna do some hardcore wheel.
You know, like, this is legit. We're gonna
give you some hardcore stuff. So
this year this year is to be a little different. We're doing a trail though that
is on my bucket list. It's been on
my bucket list for a long time for my buggy. Supposed So I'm curious how this
is gonna play out. But Mh. I am
excited, you know, moving forward. You know, the ended
great. And it's still doing great. I still
use it regularly. Mh used it as my
lumber truck as my daily driver, you know, it has Ac, Like, it it does it does great. So
I'm... I can't be upset. You know, 1
thing I would like to do in the future is I'd like to make a bed for it.
And a flatbed?
Yeah. Well, kind of. I wanna make a
utilitarian bed. So it'd be more
a little everything. Like, I wanna have toolbox,
integrated toolbox and and have my tire placed a little different. Still have a cooler and
I don't want it just to be, like, a simple flatbed with some boxes mounted on it or something, But I want it to be like a a legit utilitarian bed that has, you know, hook points and and just things that I can do with that.
The... As far as the the rest of
it, you know, it wouldn't hurt You know, I put a big transmission cooler on it, and so it holds a lot more fluid, but it wouldn't hurt, you know, it had... It's got 230000
miles on it. Probably wouldn't hurt get another
another motor and another transmission 1 day and just put them in. Mh. I mean, right
now, they're still working just fine, but I wouldn't mind doing that. I'd like to make
a trip to Alaska, Alaska has been on my bucket list. That's on my budget list
too. I'm like... Yeah. I'd like to drive
it. So
To do that, I think it'd be nice just to have all new. New parts. You
know, everything else behind that, You know, I I've built... You know, I rebuilt both of
those transfer cases, and I rebuilt the axles.
So they're all new. You know, they got
20, 30000 miles on them, but it wouldn't hurt to probably put a motor and transmission in it. Cool. For the future. But, yeah,
it did really well. You know, it it
worked really good on the trails and you know, it did good and ultimate adventure, and and you know, that was all in the East Coast, so I had to give it...
You know, you have to give it the east Coast bump on a lot of that stuff. Yeah have a little more. Well more
pal.
Which is unusual for me to have, you know, I I say I say 4 point 3V6 power. But like my... Both my samurai bug,
you know, one's got a 22 r, you know, roll 2.4, and then the other one's
A168 valve with a turbo on, they're both on propane, so, know, propane rob a little power.
Mh. And
so... Yeah, Having having that extra... That extra
little bit of go juice makes a big difference for sure. Sure. Nice. Alright. So the
last year, you kinda ended up, you won the you won. The build challenge with On,
and then you got to go an ultimate.
You had a lot of fun there.
What is in the works for this year's build challenge now.
So this year, I picked up a 19 76 Amc Pace.
And, I mean, and I knew... I knew it
a dave. Yeah You know.
And I knew Fred and Dave had built 1. You know, they... They're both friends of
mine, and I knew they had built built 1 on dirt... Dirt every day when dirt
every day was around. But they just kinda
threw some jeep axles under it, you know, some... And and like, I I'd swear the
things got cherokee leaf Springs. But
I was hoping I was hoping in it. My car looks
just like the wayne Road car, Like it's 100 percent. It's the same color for same
color. Yeah. Oh, yeah. And
I was originally thinking I wanted to just put a 4 liter in it, you know, 3 speed auto because... You know, that they
had a 02:58 and a 07:27.
So 30 2RH and a 4 liter would work good in there. And then, a, you
know, tee case and then do some, you know, full with axles. Well, 30 As we
started breaking it down and and the time constraints, I'm in the middle of building a shop right now. So I'm like, I have
no way of putting this car together the way I want to. Well, good. You you
and Na, both on the same this right.
Yeah.
I think this is a what much farther along. I don't even have power in my
shop yet. I think use extension cords.
But but... Yeah. So I'm I'm
put putting that together.
And so I asked Onyx if I could bring on an another partner with Rory. And
so We brought the card to Rory, and that was at least advantageous for the fact that, you know, I could use his tools. I
could use his lift.
And we decided that it would be easier to start with a frame.
And so I I used my old jeep wrangler. I got ATJ.
And so I was able to, you know, pull body on and off on and off on and off. Now here's 1 thing I
can tell you about the car versus the Wrangler.
Nothing lines up the same. Like, it's a
yes.
You know, nothing. Like, the engines in a
totally different spot for the t. The transmissions
in a different spot. So we had cut
my a huge chunk of the firewall to get it down. Now as far as the
the cars base design, like the under belly versus the Tj frame design are really close.
So that part was nice. I was able
to kinda get that mocked in there.
And get that that part of it done.
Right now, I'm in a very dangerous spot though because it looks super cool. Like, there's
a car on the frame. You know I
got this little char that looks looks like it's functioning, and I don't have axles. I don't have suspension. I don't have
running drivetrain training. I don't have any of
that stuff.
So So now, you know, you're in the process of building all of these... Or making all
the stuff that you may not have that visual stabilization on Mh. As I go forward. But,
you know, my plan is still to...
I wanna make... I wanna make a race
car. So, like, you know, kind of an
off road racer. I haven't seen
you know, they've raised Pace before, but they were still like the 2 wheel drive pace.
So I'm excited to build an off road pace that, you know, can jump.
And my my goal, my ultimate goal is I would like to run the Baja with it. So... Wow. Wow. That's that's kinda what
I want to do. Okay. Run. So the
baja. Are the shocks gonna go through the
hood? Like, how are you gonna
that off? That's that's what I wanted to
do. I I scored some
box 2 and a half inch coil overs that are 12... They're 12 inch. So
which realistically you get over 14 inches, and most of most of the time you're never gonna use any more than that. I I
wanted to find some 16 or 18, and then I'll just limit them and exactly that, like, make it, like mass and furious style where you just see these coil overs blown through the hood. And I might still have
them coming up through the hood, we'll see.
But But the the goal is is to have a functional car. So I got a 9
inch. You know, a lot of people don't
know this, but, like, most vehicles, your rear axles narrower than your front axle, and that's... So you have a better turning
radius. Yep. And so I pulled my 9
inch out of a van, So it's actually the same width as my front 44. So the vans actually have a
wider stance. So
My van is 67 inches I think, and then my 44, which is out of like a 78 ford pickup is also inches hub to hubs. So
I'm gonna have the same wheel base front back, which kinda... I like... When it
comes to off road, you're not so much worried about turning radius.
No. And I like having the the Prom
method, you know, wider is better. Yep. The
old cardiac commercials. So... Mh.
So, yeah. I'd like having that stability. So
that's that's the goal as a 9 inch and a 44 instead doing 1 tons. I'm gonna focus on
37 inch tall tires. And
and kinda go that route, which is gonna be a little bit different, but I I... I'm gonna try to do trailing
arms in the back.
Mh. And if I can make that work,
I'm gonna run trailing arms. And then is
there a room underneath the chassis enough enough space in the wheel base to get trailing arms in there?
The car is a unrealistic wider than people think. It is hue. That
is a full size mini car, Like, it is so big. It looks tiny. Oh, I
know they look small. You gotta remember too,
though, like, me and Rory are both 6 foot 5 and, you know, I'm 02:50, and he's you know, 2 80 or something like, we're not smaller guys. And so we look,
we make the car look smaller than it is, but a car is massive. Like, Oh,
wow. It's so much bigger than that, Wrangler.
Like, I had to stretch that Wrangler 13 or the frames 13 inches just to fitted under the wheel base, and then the tires that stuck out, those are 10 inch wide wheels, granted it's just a 44 and a 30 like stock Tj j axles, but they're offset out wheels 10 inch wide wheels they stuck way out on that Wrangler. They are flush with the
width of that car. Wow.
Okay. Yeah. There is there. I I was...
I wasn't familiar with what a Pace is.
And once I I've googled it real quick while we've been talking. And I was like,
okay. That's a pace. And 1 of the
the first things on there is... Well, hey,
it's your video with Rory, tackling a Pace out in Moa app. But,
then there's was a little blurb that said, that the car is almost a wider than it is long.
Oh, yeah. It's ridiculous. It's like.
They square. I've had people send me commercials
from you know, they found commercials on those pace, and that's actually what they would brag about is how wide the car was. Like,
it's a wide stance full size short car, you know, or whatever. But... Yeah,
That... They...
It's a much bigger car people think. Fortunately,
You know, like, Immediately had people sending me stuff from for the wayne rolled stuff. So
I have...
At some point, Rory and I... You know,
I got a whole garth get up, and and he's got a, you know, Wayne get up, and I actually had my buddy, Trevor.
Used to be on Matt's offer recoveries now mis venture labs.
He made me a licorice dispenser, like a little legit liquor other deals and everything. So
I'll have to figure out how to mount that to where it's like, a temporary mount, so it's not in the race car race car part, but where I can, like, mount it pulled in and out. You don't wanna
have licorice while you're going down the Baja.
Wow. I'm afraid that it like things would
fly off. Like, there's, like, a little cutter,
you know, little razor of laying cutters and stuff to cut it. And yeah. I don't
meet that in the eyeball. So... So just,
like, put ducks on my dash. I don't
want that.
Are you gonna get the vinyl like, a vinyl sticker of the flames behind the tire too?
Even better. So here go. I got a
bet... I got a better 1 for you.
The... So I won't you know, you can
get those off of ebay actually. Okay. And
and I was like, man, this car is going to Sema. Like, Do I really wanna just
throw some ebay stickers, flame stickers on it, and I haven't a gotta reach out to me that wanted to do a sign for the shop.
His name's Jason, and He does pins driving.
And so I asked like, pins stripes. My is piece steal that
I'm always jealous of. Yeah. And so, yeah,
I asked him and I said, hey, you know, would you be interested in doing a pen strip, Like, here's the design. I wanna
keep the same design. Mh. But making some
red Pins dried flame setup up for this thing. He's like, I'll definitely do that. So
Yeah gonna be awesome. That's that's the route
we're going with what's so cool.
But we I wanna kinda... It's gonna kinda
look, you know, similar to like, the fast and furious charger.
Where it had the tie, you know, dual tires in the back and all that stuff.
Like, I'm gonna kinda... I want to be
a cool looking rig, and I want to be functional I I did a barnes, the barnes TJ4 link underneath. So it's gonna have... You know,
so it's got a strong belly and a good more link platform that I welded up underneath it. And
yeah, Coil overs and then a 44 and a 9 inch, You know, I think it's gonna be a good combo for 30 sevens.
Yeah. And a vehicle. It's not gonna be
super heavy. So...
Yeah.
Well, so was very smart of you to actually kinda utilize a frame that is standard and, has a lot of, options, options for it already. Right? So it's...
You're not reinventing the wheel completely.
I mean, you are mash 2 different vehicles together, but frame down is all kind of been established and understood and there's a lot of research on that and frame up is, kind of all big point around when what you gonna play around Right. Figuring.
Biggest thing is I'll have to make my own... You know, I'm still gonna make my
own suspension design under it. Know, there's so many
suspensions under their that people that you can buy and weld in, but, you know, we're still on a budget. So most of those coil over kits
for Tj j, Jk k, Jail, any of them, are are the max of my budget.
There are. Okay. Yeah. So so, yeah. It
it... It's... But it was nice to start
with a box frame. I mean, that's the
biggest thing was just starting out having a good strong frame.
And then I'm not trying... Like, you're saying,
I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. I
already have the engine in there. Like, the
engine the mounted, the transmissions mounted. The tee
case is mounted.
And, you know, that's that's the biggest thing. You
know, If you guys And I don't know if you have or not, But like, you ever built your own rock buggy.
There's a reason why companies that sell rock buggy sell rolling chassis because, like, that's the easiest part of it. At when you come
into do in your plumbing and setting up your pedals and setting up your steering and your wiring, and that's the stuff that just eats up time, and that's what kills people on buggy builds. Yep. That's why I like,
when people say, I wanna, you know, I wanna build a buggy, you know, I say, well, either start with 1 that's affordable. You
know, like, Thomas, know, fabric 1 of those guys, you know, they make pretty nice setups and they'll sell you all the brackets. You
know, I think Randy Sla does that. I
think a lot of these guys are doing that now where they're, like, setting up. Here's
an entire kit, you know, even Jesse Haynes.
So, like, here's an entire kit where then you can put this drivetrain in and bolt in. Yeah. But, like, I try to push
people more towards the t world. Like, man,
just pick up a t, cut the, you know, the... Like, if you
cut the front of the frame off, you can run a tube around it around your engine. Mh. Cut the back the frame off,
you know, and kinda build some tubes around the back, and then you can link it up and and then you already have... You're
not trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to, like, setting up your steering. Your
steering there. Your pedals there, your seats are
there. You know, all that stuff is already
there. And then you're just building a buggy
around a firewall rig. Yeah. Where it's a
lot easier. I think that's a time saver
for sure.
Yeah. Definitely. That's a...
Yeah. Getting all the the little intricacies, the
electrical wiring harness down and everything. If that's all set for
you. Yeah. The the axles and drivetrain stuff
is goes right together because that's what... I
mean, a lot of this industry. The rock
crawling industry at least.
Is out there, because that's what we focus on our axles and so what we like.
So there's a lot of stuff already done ready to go.
So you can just kinda pick and choose your flavor that day and throw it under a semi my completed thing and then finish it off with what you want.
Yep. And I've been I've been really blessed
to be, you know, friends with a lot of lot of people in the off road industry over the years and and just you know, learn and talk, you know, when when somebody that's been doing it for a long time, tells me me something, and I'll sit there and listen. You know, I've great
case in point. So I was
gosh, 19, maybe.
And we're working at 4 parts, Shannon Campbell was down for...
It might have been the very first Xr r a. So, like, pre... Yeah. Pre,
ultra 4. Mh.
And I can't remember if there's that or 1 of the Rock crawl events. But anyway,
I built a a while link for my Ka coma. I had a Coma and
I, you know, I have both my upper wi lengths, you know, it's just like what everybody still sells which drives me bad, But, you know, like, it's you know, lower long arms and then coming off the lower long arms to your upper arms.
And he took a pin and he's like, look, the reason you keep messing up and your rig is, like dive bombing when you come off of cliff is because your your links are too hard mounted on the upper side. He said, remove 1
of those up lengths. He said if you
have your fingers, you took a pin and put his fingers on each end of the pin and flex it. And you can feel
the pin bind. Yep. And then he took
1 of the links off and he's, like, now, it's not binding. Yeah. So you take
your finger off the 1 side of the pin, and then it's not binding anymore. And
he's like, you take your upper link off and you run a 3 link.
He's like, now your regal flex, your won't die bomb, your body won't roll as you driving off stuff, and it won't try to break and fracture your weld. Mh. And once
I did that, you know, it it made a huge difference on how that truck operated. It reflects so
much better work better, you know, wheel better and and I was like, man. You know, and
it's just it was just something simple. Yeah.
That he had already went through. You know?
And it's, like, you know, you know, Shannon ben building rigs, you know, I mean, he was doing the the old quarter lip stuff, you know, where you had your these rigs have cut upside down, on cha and links and... Yep. And so
You know. So, you know, it's like stuff
like that, you know, and when you can when you can pick the brains of people that have been doing it, it helps you get better and then and then you can, you know, I don't know, like I said, I was people with my... Yet. Sure people my knowledge
with mistakes I've made and then if I can take something from somebody else, I'm gonna take that for sure and wrong with it.
Yeah. That's awesome, man.
Sounds like you should have a youtube channel or something to share all that stuff.
That's cool. So, yeah, speaking of your Youtube
channel. You've been doing it for a while,
it's been going well. You'd have a lot
of really fun content. What has been, like,
just over the years, what has been your favorite build that you've ever done. Oh, shoot.
So I have a couple, like...
And the the reason for it is, I I have a Toyota T, I did that I wish Had kept. Mh. That just
worked, man. It just worked. And
I beat it up, and it just... It
functioned. I put the... If when super swamp
came out with the I rock sticky, I put it set on I rock stick on there, and that truck was just oh, man. It was so good.
And and it was all budget. Like, full junkyard
parts didn't have didn't have enough power to get out of its own way, but all gears.
And and you know, dual cases obviously and and did a Dana 300 twin stick, and Nice.
And you know, was just it worked. That's 1
of the rigs I wish I wouldn't got right. But I a few honestly. I had
a right when Shannon I first got married.
I had a 70 2K5 blazer And at the time, Pat wasn't popular. Mh.
And man that truck was rust free and it had knew everything, like the guy bought it from it, put a brand new Crate 03:50.
New transmission had off road designs double and a dual... You know, it had a 02:03 02:05
from You know, and and then I had 3 quarter ton of axles and 30 35 inch tires on it. That truck, I love
that truck. It drove good at wheel good.
But I was afraid to deny it.
And and you know, I I... That... You know, there's
a, like I said, there's a couple I had a, you know, command she had built, I wish I wouldn't get rid up.
So I have a couple. I don't know.
I... There's there's a few out there. 1
of them 1 of them was actually 1 of my samurai bug, and I was able to buy it back. So I was happy
about that. Now it's All Toyota guts for
the most part too. It's
20 2R5 speed dual toy cases and then 16 a 77, 17 gears and stuff like that. So Wow.
Yeah. I'm a I'm I'm a big proponent
of low gears if you got a manual transmission. More gearing,
you can all the not more options. Yeah.
All the lot more options. Okay. So
That's cool. I was gonna ask if you
were running the samurai 1 tons under there, but you're running, like, the samurai rock wells under there. So the 60 to 7.
Yeah. The other The other 1 is sixties
front back. I've put I pulled the 05:13
output 7 seventeen's in it as well, and then Nice. It's
it's That's my rear steer 1, and it it does...
It works good. It but it's got that
1 6, so you gotta give it all the gears you can get, you know. So...
Yep.
We need to get out here with aye as an annual Rub trip with all Suzuki.
It's called Z con. And they a bunch
of Suzuki get out here and run the Rub.
Every every year.
Amber, and I have talked about that. Every
year and every year. I'm like, man.
I need to get out there.
Here here's a great. So here's a here's
a Rub story for you. I've done the
Rub count 1 time.
Okay. And I've wanted to do it. I'd
wanna to do it for forever. And I
saved what I did is I kept all of my change.
And I have it... You know, so I
kept all my change for, like, 12 or 15 years. And I just throw
it in this 5 gallon water jug. Yep.
And that's how I paid for my rub.
Wow. Now I was in the middle, I
just sold... I had sold my fore runner,
which I shouldn't get rid of. But sold
my fore runner and was building another coma.
And I used a a company's long arm kit because I didn't have time to do it.
I'm not gonna name them because Lam kit literally broke apart on the weld. Oh, no.
They looked pretty and they failed.
And but anyway, and there's a reason why you'll probably never see me running them again. But the...
But I I put this jeep together, and I and we had booked the the Airbnb or Vr or whatever it was. I'd never even heard of that at
the time, like, what it was, But because It's been 10:11 years, maybe even 12 years since I've done the room calling now Got the commands together. 39 inch red labels
like it was sick, you know, 1 tons.
I had dual... I had a atlas 4
speed in it, Like, it was a rad rig, you know, Hey 15 Atlas 4 speed.
And and made it a 4 seater. Like, mate... Still
had bedside, but, like, put a bet or a seat in the back of bench seat for my kids.
And we had booked that place a year in advance to stay at the Rub. So
So it wasn't real it wasn't real pricey, but it was 1 block from Rub Road on the top Mat tahoe side size. Yep.
And I went out there with 1 friend that I knew, and then a bunch of people Had never met before.
And get out on the trail and don't even make it to Cadillac hill and coming in from the backside, and then that arm broke. Right? Just
amp right off.
And I'm like, you gotta be kidding me.
And and at the time, it rolled... So
when it broke, It rolled my axle, broke both my front shocks. Oh my god.
Busted what I didn't notice it broke a little bit of my drive shaft when it separated, but I could still sp it back together. But what I didn't notice is it
broke 1 of the 1 of the little dot like, tits, the little dog ears that hold your you join in at the at the penny yoke. Yep. And
so Ratchet just strapped everything back together, got back together.
And my friend that was there with me.
They're like, oh, I hadn't really wheeled from that much before and they're like, yeah. Well,
you know, you you should be able to get back to camp, and then all the other people just, like, they every everybody just left me. So I was just like this
sucks.
Like, I just got left. Yeah. So, you
know, which I was used to wheel a lot alone because I was pushing the limits of what my rigs could do, and I wasn't you know, I wasn't in the buggy world, you know, when I was younger. So, like,
I couldn't afford the buggy, so they would, like, you know, sc at you. You know,
you're you're pretty on greg on leaf Springs, You know? So so it wasn't a shocker
for me to have to fix stuff on my own and then get back off the trail and then I drove around Tahoe and found 2 dudes like a garage with these Toyota, like you're saying just raised up Toyota just smashed to snot.
I was like, hey, man, do you guys got a welder? Like, can I borrow a
Welder, you know, and, you know, what whatever you want money or whatever And they're, like, well, we just want beer?
So that's to my wife. Go get a
beer and and, you know, I used... They
had a little es stop welder, and I used it and burned everything back together.
Not no. You know, like I said, I
had no shock still.
And so both of them were broke. And
we went back out on the trail.
And I'm trying to figure out Never been on this. You know, Never even been on
the trail before. Mh. And they're like, hey,
we're gonna be camped at 1 of these lakes. So
we're driving around and we go up, We're going up, big s, I think is what it is where it was like, you know, just kinda that long uphill. Mh.
Yeah because we got down in Roof cone Springs, people like, you need to go this way and I'm like, okay. You know, Ran
people. This is nighttime, like, dark. And U.
And so I'm driving up big the big s, and that's when that you joint Cap let go. Now. So now I'm in just
rear wheel drive.
And I'm hammering on it. Like, full K
style, like, just trying to get up this hill.
And I had to win a couple spots you know, fortunately, my wife's said go get her so she went out, and you know, pulled cable, and and we're were up and getting up stuff, and then I finally find these guys, and I don't know what time it was.
And, you know, we set up our camp and it starts raining as we're setting up our tent.
And and we you know, I get my whatever hour and a half asleep, get up in the morning. I'm like, okay. I gotta fix
this thing.
Fortunately, I had to know you joint.
And I had some welding rod and jumper cables. So I borrowed some other guy's jumper
cables, put the u joint caps on, and and welded the caps to the to the yoke, and it helped. Like, we did the entire
risk of the trail, and it held with Well.
Yeah. Now you've ever driven a Cherokee Ka
coma with no shocks and coils upfront. It
is a big old s, man. Just.
Wrong. You know, you're bouncing all over the
place.
And but we did the rest of the trail.
And then come back and, you know, now I'm like, okay. I
gotta go into to Reno and get parts.
Like, I gotta get a pin yoke. I'm
a try to find some shocks.
So we head back and get the... Get fined... You know, there's a
race shop that's next to summit. And I
can't remember the name of it. But that
I went over there. They do like Baja
trucks and stuff. And they had some old
shocks in the back and they sold... They
they had some shocks the right lengths. They
sold me some shocks. They had my pin
yoke, and it worked out. So I was able
to get all the stuff, put everything back together.
And then the guys are like, you know, we're like, hey, I'd really like to go do 4 dice. And, like, yeah, We'll show
you 4 dice. Well, we come in. When
I come to find out, we didn't even go in the entrance. We went and like
in the shortcut or whatever where you crossed the river. Yep. And
we crossed the river, and I'm doing some, like, wicked bonus line stuff in there and do it did Toyota rock and all that.
Like, and and right after Toyota rock like, that obstacle, whichever Windshield that is. I don't
know which 1 that is.
They're they're like, our wives wanna go shopping, and then they're like, we gotta go back.
And so they, like, literally, turn around right there. I never even got
to do all of Ford. So I've never
been able to do all of the Rub con. I've never been able to do all
the ford ice, and that was my Rub con experience. So, like, I I have a
Vendetta Right now I... I'm now... I think 12
years in on this change collection that I have all this change. I have a bucket
a 5 gallon bucket. Full of change. If
I'm gallon them, like water jug. Mh. Full,
you know, Yeah. Pennies, porter dimes whatever and
and it's like, okay. It's about time to
go back and do the rub con, and then I'd like to do 4 dice at the same time.
Let us know what you did do that trip. I mean, we're up on the Rub,
this year's is a little different, but in normal years we're up there, 12 to 15 weekends, a year, on the rub coin, and Ford dice were usually up there at least 2 to 3 weekends a year. So,
their birth trails. Jimmy an hour and a
half from each trail head. And I got
2 hours, So it's a... It's... We're we're
up there a lot. It's a really beautiful
area. They're really fun trails
And if you have a vendetta on them that we'd love to get you out there.
Just to go. I mean, just even driving
around in the daytime that next day, you know, because we... I... Wherever whatever lake we
stayed at, they didn't wanna go to the insurance. I wanted to drive to the insurance.
Mh on the room come, but they're like, we did that yesterday when you were broke down. And I'm like, okay.
Like, you guys all live here. That'd be
cool for you, But I'm, like, you know, I haven't... You know, I've never been here,
and it's a long, you know, long drive for me to get out here. So I
was really really disappointed.
And but anyway, You'd you'd get a kick out of it, especially since you've been there.
I mean, the trail has... It's changed
a little bit. They try and preserve that
trails as much as possible, but, it definitely has changed, and there's a old new section, which takes a solid afternoon to do, with the the new Rub Trail Foundation, the loop that they opened up.
Yeah. And it is some amazing,
awesome, just granite, ledge and big articulation. So...
Nice. You you would get a kick out
of there. And you kinda just gotta add
another day to your trip if you wanna do it all and see everything out there.
So...
I'd like to do that. What 1 of
the things that I was nerd out on was just all the mountain like, just hiking.
I wanna get out there and, like, hike, Just... I'm... So
here's 1 thing like, my parents had me and my brother a lot later in life, like in their forties. And
I don't know if they just didn't care or what, But when I was a kid, my dad would just let me... Like, I
I had a a huge hiking backpack.
Mh. That weighed about 70 pounds of his
old hiking backpack.
And he would drop me off in the woods in Pike National forest, and I would go out and go camping, by, you know by myself. You have a
whole new respect for the woods when you can't buy yourself. You run across, bears, mountain
lions, everything else. And
And and I had a machete. So... Yeah.
It's, like, expected could fight off anything with a Machete. Right? Yeah. And
and you'd go camping and then I would just keep hiking, and you always come onto to a road. Like, I don't know how anybody
can get lost, like legitimately lost unless you just gave up.
You always come to our own because I would just hike in the woods, and then come out and I'd end up on a road, and then I'd fall the road till I found a house and then I'd knock on houses, you know, and and then somebody the door, and then I'd you know, this is before cell phones and then call call my parents, you know, and say, hey, you know, I'm over here, I guess, and then they would come and get me. Holy
crap. And... Yeah. Like, no parents let their
kids do that. Now. Like, I wouldn't even
let my kids do that. I'm like, no
way. Yeah. You're like You're like the original
bear g a survivor. Dude you but.
Well, I was... I I can tell you
right now. I I had a lighter. I
was no good at make it... That get
a dude think fire. I can't make fire
like that. I always had a lighter.
But but you know, go camp like that. And
so I've always just loved being outside. Like,
that's probably my favorite thing ever. We just
recently, you know, this like last year move to New Mexico to Farming and... Oh, man.
Like, I just love being outside. I love exploring
stuff and how you can... Like, I I
love 4 wheel. Last But I love it
just as much if I was on A22 wheels or or on my feet, You know?
Like, I just love being outside. So if
I can go explore stuff and find stuff that maybe other people haven't seen, Like, that's what I really like. And I'm
like, man, this hike took me, you know, 2 or 3 days. I guarantee nobody else
been out here. That... That's always... I I
love that kind of stuff. Dude. There's... I
mean, the the Hi sierra is, there's there's a lot of really sweet things to see.
Yeah. I man, hiking around the high sierra.
There is a ton of really cool stuff to see. There's a
couple a couple. There's a few.
airplane crashes that are really rad hikes to get out to some bitumen and waterfall areas, cascade to get out and check out, tons of gold mining history. Tons of gold
mining history. It's... There's some nice. There's some
pretty awesome. If you like just being out
in nature in you know, 6 7000 foot elevation areas.
I don't think you can really beat in my opinion of the high series here in Nor. So, you Nice.
Yeah.
Well, we're coming we're coming to the end here. I think you know, we've stolen enough
of your precious. Little time? Or you probably
need to get back and start wrench or cutting some more firewall or something in 1 of those 2. Why don't you give us
some shout outs of like, possibly, your... Everything you've got going on tell us
how people can get a hold of you or any sponsors that you wanna talk about Yeah. For sure. You know, 1 of the
things that always makes this possible is just the people that are following along man.
I love that people are willing to, you know, take a chance on me and listen and see what I can build and what I can do. And you know, you can
get on... Obviously, I do have the Youtube
channel c builds it, but I also have Facebook, Instagram.
Patreon and even a website where any of the companies that I work with. I always try
to get a discount code so that they can have a discount if they're build some too. So they can get on the website.
Go to discount, you know, member discounts, and then they have tons of discount codes on there for them as well, kinda you know, when people buy merch, you know, I love seeing people wear wear my shirts. I love
when people come up and talk to me too. A lot of people It's funny. There's
2 kinds of people when you do Youtube, There's people that'll come see you, and there's people that just stare at you awkward accurately.
Yeah. And
And I always try to tell people like, man, feel free. If if I'm not in
the middle, like, film or something or, like, trying to do something, you know, halfway important to pays my bills.
Feel free to come up and, you know, talk. I love I love not going on
in life. And Mh. And I you know,
I just think that's it's cool, man. I
love I love being part of this community.
And, you know, I'm looking forward to going forward, building this pace, you know, hopefully, it'll do well. And in the competition, you know, my
ultimate goal is to be a fast overland, You know?
Because they said it maybe, you know, they're looking for some overland stuff, but, you know, realistically before the Toyota Tacoma, people slept tents.
So I'll be okay in a tent. Yeah.
And you could put a request bars as the Yep. And then as far as the,
you know, I'm actually gonna go back to competitive rock crawling. Like I'm gonna try my hand and
at We rock up in walk Golden dale, Washington.
Sweet...
And at the end of July. So,
yeah. Pretty excited about that too. That'd be
really cool, man. Are you taking the 1
of the bug ease for that? Or are
you gonna try and do the pace?
No. Yeah. The days
space already.
But no. I'm gonna take I'm gonna take
1 of the same for sure Yeah I got my drag axe. Samurai gonna do that,
and then maybe hit some trails in oregon after that. That'll be Cool man. So, yeah,
You've got a lot of where people get a hold of you if they see in public? You you love checking out and shaking
people's hands, say, hi to him. Anything else?
What are what are some of the places the the brands and companies that have really stood behind you. I know that you said
when you transitioned into your own channel, a big part of what was able to make that happen was the brands that stood behind you and that were, like, yeah. Dude. Let's do it. Who
were does it helped make that happen. Yeah.
Well, 100 percent was Onyx.
100 percent was On Off road, man. They
said, they literally signed a contract with me, before I even had a video out.
So they had full...
You know, they they knew what I know, what I was capable of and what I did, and I was like man, I I really appreciate that. So That I was really
really cool them to be to back me on that, you you know, Barnes 4 drive has been a really good sponsor for a long time, Adams Drive shaft, you know, power tank, you know, Sky, as another 1. Sky has been, real keen
on a lot of stuff with me and and, Yeah. It's just been...
It's been really cool. Yank income ropes reached
out, you know, re... And they wanted to
work together, So I was really happy to to work with the Yank income Rope you know, having anytime there's companies that are in the Usa that try to keep their products in in America. Mh. You know, that's...
I'm all about You know, I'm all about affordability. We know, like, like, case in point,
like t shirts, t shirts don't get made in the Usa. You can say all you.
Like, they might get printed. You might get
a printing in Usa. You're not gonna get
a t shirt made in the Usa anymore It's just, yeah, almost, you know, almost on for that. So
the printing you know, the...
But well, even... How don't no. I can't
say all that too. Because, like, even harbor
freight, harbor freight is, like, we'll wait we wanna stay with you, you know, harbor freight I worked with him, Elm bleep and Jeep and they're like, yeah. And we... We love
what you're doing and we wanna continue, you know, working with you. So those...
Super cool too because, you know, they they they've really stepped up their game on a lot of stuff with the, you know, different levels. I think that's probably the best thing
is we've all had to be on a budget sometime in our life, and buy super cheap stuff, and they have the different levels of of affordability now, you know, where you have 3 different tiers of tooling that you can buy sometime. If you can only afford,
you know, Try wanna stand tools, then they have them, You know, And... But if you
wanna get a better brand, you know, they have those too. So... Yeah.
Well, Cool man, that's some good stuff. I
hope I've everybody out there goes and checks out C here. Go look at his Instagram.
There's some really fun content there. The Youtube,
of course.
And keep an eye on the pace and see how the pace turns out and how the On x off road challenge ends up.
Is there... Are they in the the spot
for ultimate adventure again or was ultimate adventure kinda def tanked. Right?
Ultimate adventure is no longer. So...
It was nice to be able to bring...
I've been running mile star tires for forever.
It's nice to be able to bring those out east and show that they work because they still work you know, people, they they got a bad rap with the Mt o 1, the Mt o two's is a totally different tire. Yeah. But I was talking to
trent Christian they have create... They are working on creating
the unreal adventures. So that is what they're
working towards. Yep. And
I think that that's an opportunity, you know, that's a cool opportunity to still do. I think if anybody,
Trent Mcgee has a gift when it comes to making an adventure.
And, like, legitimately. Like, your day blend together out
there. And
And if you don't keep track of it, you're gonna make man that I missed, you, like, I did so much cool stuff in such a short amount of time. So
You know, I think that's really cool that they're gonna try to push forward, you know, unfortunately, motor trend just wanted to kill it and and you know, big corporations that just happens. But
Yeah. You know, they they... They're looking at
the bottom dollar what what they can make and it's not such much not as much of a love affair. Mh.
And Mh. So I'm I'm excited to see
what they can do if they make it happen, You know, it'd be cool.
I if I... I really wanna do it.
At the same time I'm like, man, I got a car that I gotta get done, and I don't even have a shop to build it in yet. So... Yeah. I'm You
know, I'm on I'm on the fence there.
But but yeah. It's... I I think it'll be cool.
Yeah. This year at this year is just
a trophy I think originally, they were talking about, like, a 10000 dollar prize pot.
Which would be cool. I think any 1
of us could obviously use that. Anybody can
use that. Mh.
I could definitely use that because, you know, this car is costing me money.
Yeah.
Yeah. People people always think that everything just
gets, you know, oh, you do Youtube. People
just send you stuff for free. Like, know.
That's not really how that works.
Know.
Yeah. Well, call me in. Thank you so
much for taking the time. It's been a
lot of fun chatting with you. I think
I'd like to have you back on the podcast here in the future to talk about trail stuff, so more of the trail have advocates ad vacation side of things, like, opening up trails, trail maintenance, because I know you are pretty heavily involved with that. So
I think it'd be fun to talk a little bit about that and tell people about how teach people about clubs and trail maintenance stuff. So
for sure. We'll get you back on for
sure. In the meantime, Everybody to go check
out, Cole. Everything that you're doing is some
pretty rad stuff. You got... I love the
way your brain works and just you're, like, yeah. We can kinda come up with this
funky thing and put this thing together and put this thing here in this thing here.
It's a it's fun to to listen and fun to look at. So... Yeah I guess
Has questions, reach out to Cole, and, yeah.
Man. Any
final words to kinda close this out and leave everybody here with today thinking. Just thank
you guys for having me on for being the first podcast out of all the podcast that keep messaging me to be on there.
To say, you know, when I say, hey, give me a date. You guys are like,
yeah. Okay. Here's a date.
Yeah.
So so, yeah, I really appreciate that because I am say I I... I'm a fly
by the seat of my pants kinda guy.
I've make about as many... You know, I'll
try to make organization and then every time I set something up, I'm usually stressing over meeting that time frame. So I rather just just go with
it and let it roll. Yeah. I need.
But Yeah. Thank you guys for having me on,
and thanks everybody for listening and, yeah, anybody that, falls along in my ventures. I definitely
appreciate it for sure. Sweet. Jimmy, any final
words for everybody out there? What are my
big takeaways from this and listening to Cole is really just start. It's... You know, it sounds like, I,
got what I learned a lot about cole is that he just sort of started doing things and I always started rolling with it.
And started understanding and, like, I... I'm 1
the same in a way where it's, like, I didn't know how to do any of this. I just took it apart, and I
learned it. And then from taking it apart,
I learned how to put it back together.
Yeah. So really get your... Use your hands,
start, you know, playing and, you know, get some grease under your nails. You know, have
some fun with it. Yep. I like it
I like it a lot. And with that
my friends, Keep crawling.
I got 1 for you. Ready, man. What
musical instrument is found in the bathroom?
This is right up your alley. It's a
it's a dirty joke. Of the t bone.
Would be a good 1. Yeah.
The Oh, I just had it. And I I
cut... Oh, what what what fuck. I don't
know what is it? It's a tub
toothpaste. Oh,
It's not a dirty joke.
Well, it's a bathroom joke It's a bathroom joke I guess. I was gonna say tub
bob, but I was trying to reference it to be a dirty. Tub. Dirty tube. Dirty
tube, something. So anyways, it's a dirty tube
toothpaste. Yeah.
