An accessory camera is a camera you add to your vehicle. You mount it where it’s useful so it can record what’s happening for safety or proof after an incident.
A four-camera setup means the system records from multiple directions at the same time. That way, you get more complete footage if there’s an accident or dispute.
Wolfbox is the company/brand that makes the dashcams they’re talking about. They’re offering a deal on a specific Wolfbox camera system for listeners.
Term
G 900 tri pro review camera systems
The G 900 Tri Pro is a specific dashcam kit from Wolfbox. It’s designed to record more than just the road ahead so you have better coverage if something happens.
The Wrangler is a 4-wheel-drive off-road SUV that’s designed for trails. Many owners modify them for better off-road performance, so they’re common on challenging routes. Here, it’s mentioned in connection with locating a particular Wrangler in a specific area.
A GPS tracker is a device that can tell you where something is on a map. The hosts are saying they don’t want to put these on everything because it’s not necessary or might be too intrusive.
Air Tags are small trackers that can help you find a lost item using your phone. They work best when they’re within Bluetooth range or when other Apple devices pass by to help relay the location.
Control arms are parts of your suspension that hold the wheel in the right position. If the upper ones wear out, the car can feel loose or make knocking noises.
Lower control arms are another suspension part that helps keep the wheel pointed the right way. When they wear out, you can get weird front-end sounds or handling issues.
The valve cover is the housing on top of the engine that protects the valvetrain and holds the valve cover gasket. If it’s leaking, oil can seep onto other engine parts and create smoke or odor.
The head gasket is a seal inside the engine that keeps coolant and oil where they belong. If it breaks, you can end up with coolant and oil levels dropping, which is why it was a concern here.
A 2013 Honda CR-V is the car they’re working on. The mechanic is checking whether the low oil and low coolant mean the engine has a major problem, or if it’s something simpler.
They tested the cooling system to see if it’s leaking. If the pressure stays steady, it usually means the coolant isn’t escaping through a crack or hose.
A transmission flush is a service where they replace the fluid in the transmission. They decided not to do it yet because they wanted to make sure the engine problem wasn’t the real issue first.
Term
oil in my coolant
If oil shows up in the coolant, it can mean the engine’s oil and cooling fluids are mixing when they shouldn’t. That’s a warning sign that something inside the engine may be leaking, and it’s worth getting checked before driving too long.
The axle housing is the metal “shell” around the axle parts. It protects the moving parts inside, and changes to it can help prevent damage when you drive over rocks.
A drain plug is a small screw that lets you drain fluid out of a housing. On off-road trails, if it sticks out at the bottom, rocks can hit it and damage it, which can cause leaks.
Rock crawling is off-roading over rocks at low speed, where you’re trying to carefully get over obstacles. Since the ground is uneven, parts underneath can get hit easily.
A differential is a part that sends power to the wheels while allowing them to turn at different speeds—like when you’re turning. Off-road setups often involve changing or servicing it so it works better in rough conditions.
The third member is the main “gear box” section inside an axle that holds the differential gears. If it gets warped during welding, the gears may not line up correctly, which can cause problems later.
Welding is how you join metal parts together by heating them so they fuse. With axle parts, the heat can bend things out of shape, so the order of welding matters.
The front face is the flat surface where the differential’s housing lines up with the rest of the axle. If welding heat bends it, the parts may not fit perfectly together.
The drive shaft is the spinning shaft that sends power from the gearbox to the axle. When you change axle parts, you may need to adjust the drive shaft so everything lines up and runs smoothly.
A ball joint is a small metal joint that lets your suspension move while keeping the wheel pointed the right way. If it’s loose, the wheel can move more than it should, which is risky—especially on rough trails.
The ring and pinion are gears in the rear (or front) axle that help send power to the wheels. If they’re worn or damaged, the axle can start making noise, run hot, and may not handle stress well on a trail.
Clearance just means how much space you have between your vehicle and something you’re trying to pass. If clearance is too tight, you can scrape or get stuck.
Track width is how far apart the wheels are on one axle. On trails, it matters because it can determine whether your tires fit through narrow gates and how stable the vehicle feels in ruts and turns.
Bead lock rings are parts on beadlock wheels that help keep the tire securely attached to the rim. Because they stick out, they can hit things when you’re trying to squeeze through tight trail gates.
A beadlock is a wheel that holds the tire onto the rim more securely. Off-roaders use it when they run lower tire pressure for better grip, but the extra hardware can make clearance tighter.
Wheelbase is the distance from the front wheels to the rear wheels. It affects how the vehicle fits through obstacles and how the tires follow the trail.
A slider is a reinforced metal piece under the vehicle meant to take the hit when you’re scraping over rocks. It helps prevent damage to the body and important parts underneath.
The B-pillar is the vertical support in the middle of the car, between the doors. If it gets hit or bent, it can mean the car’s structure and safety are compromised.
Winching means using a pull device (a winch with a cable/rope) to drag the vehicle out when it can’t get traction. It’s a common recovery tool on tough trails.
The undercarriage is the bottom of the vehicle. When it “hits the bottom” on rocks, it usually means you’re scraping parts that are meant to be protected by clearance.
A skid plate is a protective plate under the vehicle. It helps prevent damage when you scrape over rocks, but if it’s getting smacked a lot, you’re probably too low for the trail.
“JK” and “JL” are Jeep Wrangler generations. The hosts are saying those Wranglers tend to sit lower, so it’s easier to scrape the bottom on rough trails.
“Turtling” means the vehicle flips onto its roof (or ends up tipped over) because it got stuck on rocks and lost balance. It’s a serious recovery situation.
The Ford Bronco is a 4-wheel-drive SUV made for off-road trails. People talk about it because it’s designed to go over rough ground and still be practical for everyday use. It’s mentioned here because someone has one and it fits the off-road theme.
Ball joint eliminators are upgraded parts that replace the factory ball-joint system. They’re meant to hold up better to rough driving so you’re not constantly dealing with looseness.
All American Iron is a company that makes aftermarket off-road parts. In this episode, they’re being discussed as a place to get upgraded suspension components.
The rear diff is the drivetrain part that allows the two rear wheels to spin at different speeds when you turn. If it starts making noises, it can mean something inside is wearing out.
This is a camera mounted on the front of the vehicle that shows a live video feed on your screen. Off-road, it can help you see rocks and trail edges when your normal view is blocked.
Depth perception is your ability to judge how far away something is. A camera view can make it harder to tell distances, especially for where your tires are on the trail.
Term
width on the cab
Cab width is how wide the truck’s body is. If the cab is wider, it can be harder to fit through tight trail sections without hitting obstacles.
This is about how far apart the wheels are on the left and right sides. Even if the wheels line up the same, a wider body can still make tight trails more difficult.
An S turn is when the trail forces you to steer one way, then quickly back the other way. Off-road S turns are tough because you have to keep control while also avoiding rocks and keeping clearance.
A locker is a device that helps both rear wheels (or both wheels on an axle) spin together. That helps when one wheel is slipping on dirt, rocks, or mud.
The Toyota 4Runner is a 4-wheel-drive SUV made for driving on rough roads and trails. It’s known for being tough and good for longer trips. It’s mentioned here because someone is talking about an upcoming off-road outing and the vehicles involved.
The Suzuki Samurai is a small 4-wheel-drive vehicle made for off-road trails. Because it’s compact, it can fit and maneuver on tight, rough paths. It’s brought up here as part of the people and vehicles involved in the off-road run.
Place
Bear Lake
Bear Lake is another place they’re planning to go. It’s part of their off-road trip schedule, so expect trail driving and obstacles.
A “cubby” is a little built-in storage space. They’re modifying the side area, but the cubby can’t be enlarged because wires and water lines are in the way.
They’re talking about the wires and plumbing that run behind the wall/inside panels. If you change the size of a storage space or door, those wires and pipes can block what’s possible.
A “bracket” is a small support piece that helps hold something steady. They want one to keep the wire from falling out of the storage area.
LIVE
Welcome one. Welcome all to the snail trail four path four podcast. If you like going off
roading in Toyotas, wrenching on Toyotas, camping in Toyotas, maybe even poking a little
bit fun in Toyotas. And of course, hearing about how fantastic off roading is in Toyotas,
then this is the podcast for you. That's right, ladies and germs. My name is Tyler. Joining
me for another episode of the snail trial four by four podcast is Jimmy. What up? How you doing
me? Good. Thank you. How are you? I'm tired. Yeah, it's late in the day. Yeah, I have not
been sleeping well. My coffee is all worn off bummer. So I'm tired. My eyes are starting
to burn a little bit, but you know, hey, the show must go on. There you go. Yeah, show
on, ladies and gentlemen. Yeah, race your own race, race. All right. So let's see
here today's Thursday. Yeah. So we got updates on what's going on for the month. What's going on
for giveaways in general for reviews and stuff. We've got I went out wheeling. Yeah, I did a
repair, a couple of repairs. And yeah, what do you got? What's your docket look like? I had a
very busy week, which almost had no off-roading content in it. And then Monday, you still learning
how to drink over there. What's going on? I don't know what happened Monday. I did a lot of work
on Bobcat. Sweet. Cool. So it was fun. But before we get to any of that, those topics,
we got a few things that we need to cover. Yeah. First and foremost is the wolf box giveaway
happening here on snail trail four by four. We give away every month, we give away something
that weather and we always try to strive for it to be over $100 of value. Lately we've been up
like $250 plus dollars in value, which is really kind of cool. But we have a giveaway item every
single month for a lucky winner. If you want to sign up for that giveaway, you can go over to
irate four by four and go down to the snail trail four by four form, or we opened up tiers to go
sign up on our discord channel. So you have two ways for you to sign up. But this month's giveaway
is for a wolf box G 900 tri pro camera, reverse camera, front camera, accessory camera set up.
It's a really cool thing. We've had first hand accessory camera underneath my steering column
pointing back at me just FY. Yeah, you changed it. Yeah. Okay. I guess we'll hear that story later.
That content goes out on my only fans. Oh, got it. Okay. Yeah. Well, we'll leave that one there.
But yeah, the accessory camera is cool because you pretty much put it wherever you want. They
car accidents or safety or insurance purposes and had just the front facing camera. And then
they've expanded out now to 23 cameras and rumor has it, they're coming out with a four
camera set up here in the near future, which is going to be really cool. So we have one of those
to give away this lucky month on the podcast. And so all you need to do is go sign up in one of
those two locations and that'll get you eligible. In addition to the giveaway, we have a special
thing going on with wolf box as well. And that is a group buy for the G 900 tri pros. So essentially,
the way it's going to work is we've kind of fallen into doing group buys on the show
for the listeners and working deals with the vendors so that kind of everybody gets a big
win, right? The vendors get to sell some stuff, get some touch points, get an interview on the
podcast and the listeners all get some really great deals on some really cool products. And so
the group buy going on this month with wolf box is for the G 900 tri pros and we like to do it in
tiers. So the more units that we sell that the listeners all buy, the greater discount we get
for the group buy. So we're up around 20, 25 units right now. The discount will cap out once we
reach 30 units or more. So we're not too far away from 30 units. So all you got to do if you're
interested is to reach out to us on the discord, reach out to us by DM, messaging, whatever,
and get us your name and your email and how many units you're looking to get. And then we'll total
up those units at the end of the month at the end of July. So July 31st and July 31st, we'll reach
out to wolf box and say, Hey, we got 52 units committed for the group buy. And then they'll
give us a discount code for $40 off, which will stack with any concurrent sales they have going
on on their website right now, which right now is 20% off. So it's a potential, we're looking at
$110 off for the G 900 tri pro review camera systems for the group buy. So if you don't win one this
month, you have a chance to get one for like 230, 240 bucks with their normal retail is about 350.
So pretty cool opportunity here from wolf box for partnering with the show here.
Like I said, all you guys got to do is just reach out to us, give us your name, your email and how
many units you're looking to get. And then we'll put all that data together for wolf box and get a
discount code out for everybody to start making your purchases. So yeah, yeah, that's great.
Big thanks to wolf box for sponsoring this month's this month's giveaway and the group buy. And I hope
you guys all enjoyed the episode we had with Austin on Monday's episode, where he talked about his
wolf box experience and everything he's been working with with wolf box. We did have some fun
chatting with Austin a little bit after the fact and got some fun insights about what wolf box
potentially things they're working on potentially working on and coming out with, which sounds
pretty cool. Yeah, it does. Let's see what else we got going on. We have reviews. We love reviews.
Reviews are probably the cheapest and easiest way that you can support the podcast and we give a
little bonus every 50 cumulative 50 reviews that we acquire. So we're coming up pretty quick. If
we're not there already on 800 reviews. So once we get to 800 reviews, we're giving away
an on ex elite membership. And once we get to 850 reviews, we're doing another on ex elite
membership. And then when we get to 900 reviews, we're giving away $900 or more value of morpholite
gear and swag and everything they got going over there, which every time a person comes here to
interview with us, I learn more and more of the behind the scene things that Tyler is doing.
And he's got a lot of really cool shit coming out. Yeah, I'm excited for a lot of them.
There's six or seven items in the pipeline that I'm having to stagger out. Like they're pretty
much all ready to go. I just don't have the bandwidth of the cash to launch all the production
lines on them all at one time. So we're kind of staggering the releases of them. We're going to
have two products releasing pretty much right now. A third really big product that we'll be doing a
Kickstarter campaign on towards the end of the year. Q late Q three early Q four and then
two to three more products in Q one and Q two next year. Yeah. So it's pretty fun,
pretty fun stuff. Yeah. And whoever is that 900 review is going to get pretty much everything,
all the new stuff that's coming out. Well, whoever, whoever wins the drawing after we
get hit 900 reviews. Yeah. You said the 900 review is going to win. Yeah. No, no. That's not
what I meant. Whoever wins the drawing once we reach 900 reviews is going to win a lot of this
really cool stuff that Tyler's coming out with included the braided hose kits, which is already
been released and which is a big hit. Yeah, that was a big hit. We got those out early this year,
late last year. I think it was late last year. Yeah. So yeah, let's see. Discord is popping.
I think we have like 120, 130 people on there now. I'm not sure how many.
One thing that has been coming up is people are out finding tokens, but they're having
a hard time finding the tokens and the tokens are either so hard to find that they can't find them
or they've been taken or gone or mysteriously disappeared. Yeah. They are wood and we don't
seal them at all. So if they've been out there for two to three years, chances are they're starting
to degrade and turn into the environment. And we do that on purpose because we don't want to
just leave tokens out there that turn into trash in the environment. So they are biodegradable. If
they're not found after, I'm guessing five years, you're not going to find them. They're going to
start the wearing out and not looking like tokens anymore. So if you guys want to go hunting for
tokens, go find them. I will say when I hide tokens, I try and hide them in such a way that if
you're just walking by, you're not going to see it, but you're going to have to. I usually,
most of the times I will usually hide mine under lips of rocks. That seems to be a good spot.
Well, they'll be protected for the most part from snow coming down, rain coming down on them,
from somebody just walking by and seeing them, but still easy enough to find that you don't
have to like dig through a bush or get really pain in the ass to try and find the token, right?
Right. So that's how I, that's how I hide them. But I'm not that way.
Jimmy's mean with this token. And I apologize. You were looking for one of my tokens.
I make them obscure. like it's not an easy thing to find. You have to kind of dig
around. You have to get to a really specific angle to see them, but usually they're obscured.
Okay. Yeah. That's funny. And I probably could dig back in my photos and go find photos of that
specific one that was being searched for on the Rubicon and see if they were in the general area.
But I also don't want to give it away. I don't know how to do. But what I didn't want to say is
there is a very high potential of somebody else finding a token and just never reporting it back
to us. And then we don't know if it's still there or gone unless one of us, whoever hit it,
goes and tries to find it again. And then I don't know about the likelihood of those things
actually happening. So to some point, I don't like, we're not going to put GPS trackers on these
things or chips or air tags on everyone. But at some point, we are going to have to just
write some of them off or we're just going to leave them up there until I mean, the whole point,
the whole point of the tokens is to encourage you guys to go out into the, into the outdoors, right?
So even if you go out and explore, and most of the time we're putting the tokens in some pretty
cool spots. So there's something significant about the spot we're hiding them in. So if you're just
out there trying to find the token, I know it may suck that you don't find one. Maybe somebody
already took it and never reported it. But look at the bright side. You're out in some really cool
spots. So I think it's, it's still a win. The second one that Kellen tried to find,
and he said is not there. I know I hid that one. I know exactly where I hid it. And I'm going to
be in that area this weekend. So I'm going to check on that one this weekend and see if it's
still there or not. Right. The first one I think was out on the RTF loop. Yep. Yeah.
Yeah. It was right above upchuck. Yep. Yeah. And yeah, and it, it's just out there. I think
it's like the farthest point out on that trail that you can get to. But yeah, it's pretty,
pretty fun. And I'm, I hope, hopefully you drove that trail and had a blast. Yeah. Right. So
I'm sorry you didn't find any tokens, but hopefully, hopefully they'll be there.
Hopefully you still enjoyed the day. Yeah. Hopefully you still enjoyed the day or
hopefully you find another one someday. Yep. Or as you admitted, you're just maybe a bad
looker and you just need to up your game. One of those. Yeah. That's funny. So,
but lots of things moving here on the podcast. A lot of things in the show notes to inform you
guys about everything that's going on. So if we missed anything, just go read the show notes.
There's, we try to keep all that information there for you guys as well. Yep. All right.
So let's see here. I think that's it for housekeeping stuff. Yeah. I think so.
Let's take quick break then. We have a surprise from a listener
that is sitting on the table over here that we're going to dig into after the break. So
let's take that break because I'm excited to dig into this and see what it's like. So
got my favorite drinks and your favorite WD 40 flavors. And we'll be right on back with today's
what we've been up to.
Are you stuck inside? Are you not sure where you want to go to explore?
Well, open the on X off road app. It shows you all the trails around you and it tells you their
difficulty. Now you can quickly search out your next adventure or plan your next trip.
Download on X off road from the app store on X off road built for the adventurer.
Welcome back ladies and germs and everybody out there. This is Thursday. Happy Thursday,
everybody out there. Hopefully you guys are gearing up for a fun weekend and you have some fun
plans. I will be up in the mountains again. So if I see anybody out on the Rubicon or at Barrett
Lake, say hi and stop me. I'll be in the big neon green foreigner. It's hard to miss.
So to kick off today's what we've been up to. There's a listener got in contact with me. Okay.
And said that he's been a listener of the podcast for a while. His name is Cameron. Okay.
Cameron and he's never ever really ever been into wines. Okay. And listening to us
every so often talk about wines and going wine tasting and especially when the significant
others are on, we're always drinking some kind of wine and talking about it.
He said that he's been getting into a little bit more wines lately. Oh,
and he heard a couple of the episodes where I talked about loving and being addicted to
smoked tainted wine. Oh, okay. I like where this is going. Okay. So and he was, and so he's been
curious about this and he's never gotten a chance to try smoked to wine before. And I guess he was
out at a winery at two weeks ago, a week and a half ago, something like that.
And said, oh my God, this winery has a bunch of smoked tainted wine that is absolutely amazing.
And I 100% on board as agreeing that smoked tainted wine is one of my new favorite things.
So he ended up buying quite a few bottles because the winery was given away for cheap,
dirt cheap, because most people don't like them. Most wine people don't like smoked tainted wine.
So the winery is just like, we just need to get rid of it. But he ended up shipping us a bottle
of olive oil here. So we're able to receive it here in California. And we're going to give it
a shot and try it out and see exactly how this is. So you're going to pour it up. Yeah. All right.
It is a Grenache 2024 Grenache from Snake River Valley from L Clavill. I'm guessing is the name
of the Grenache. And so I'm googling this. Is this up in like Idaho? I thought he said it was
in the PNW Washington. Yeah. It looks like Snake River. Snake River I think is in Idaho.
It's like on the border of Idaho and Oregon. Okay. If it's the one, if it's the same Snake River.
Yeah. But interesting color. Yeah. It's a Grenache that's a lighter red. Yeah. They're
similar to like Barbaras. But I think in my opinion, Grenaches have a little bit more
fruity flavor than Barbaras. You know what we're doing? We're turning into our sister podcast.
No, we're not. This is because I don't think they like smoked tainted wines. Losers.
We've got Wheeling wine on this podcast. We do. Oh, yeah. There's a little bit char there.
I like it. That's yummy. It's like, it's like acidic, but charry. Yeah. That's tasty. That's
really good. Yeah. So apparently he said talking to the winery that next time they end up with
smoked tainted crop. Yeah. They're just going to give away the wine. The grapes? Not the grapes.
They're going to make the wine still? Yes and no. If sometimes you can tell,
obviously, when you go to harvest the grapes, that it's going to be smoked tainted the final
product. Okay. Sometimes you can't tell. Got it. And so sometimes you don't know that the final
product is going to be smoked tainted until it comes out of the barrel and you're like,
shit, this whole, this whole inventory is smoked tainted now. Yeah. A lot of wineries just insurance
it out. So they, if they can tell that the crop is going to be smoked tainted before they pick it,
they'll just insurance the entire crop. Right. Yeah. Which were kind of sucks because I'm like,
man, that's the best kind of wine. Some people out there really like this stuff.
And so apparently, I guess he was talking to the winery and they told him that if they ever get
to bottling and they find out that it's smoke tainted after the bottling that they're probably
just going to be giving away cases of it and just insurance claim it all out. Wow. And so
what was the gentleman's name? Cameron. Cameron. Yep. If that happens,
we're, I'm making a trip out to the Snake River. I'll bring the trailer and we can load a couple
of pallets on. Yeah. And Dylan will even give them some money for it.
Yeah. This is, this is delicious and really good. And I'm stoked that you ventured out.
I think that's awesome. That's cool. You know, I think people should just go out and try things
that they have never done before. Yeah. And just to experience something new and go try it.
Unless it's guacamole or seafood. Don't do that. That's bad. Well, it's funny. Just having a 12
year old daughter who will like look at it and if it looks a little weird and won't even try it,
you know, it's like, Hey, you know, don't, you know, try it before you knock it. Yeah. Right.
And so that's, I've always felt that way. And that's, I've had some really bizarre foods because
of that. Yeah. And we're sticking with foods. Oh, okay. Sorry. Just making sure.
No, I appreciate this. Thank you very much. Cameron's very good. This is tasty. I like it a
lot. We're going to finish this bottle before the end of this episode and I'm going to be able to go
home. We're going to snail mail episode. The Friday episode is going to be a lot of fun.
Yeah, exactly. All right. So cheers Cameron. Thank you, bud. Very tasty. It's almost
bacon-y. I wouldn't go that far. You wouldn't go bacon-y? No, but it is very, I don't,
it's earthy for a ganache. That's for sure. Yeah. It's got, yeah, it's definitely has the smoke
taint to it. It's my favorite taints. kind of taint. It's the smoked one,
smoky one. All right. Well, before you start in on all your fun off-roading things, I want to tell
you about my week. Okay. I'm ready. And I'll do it pretty quick because I know you have some good
stories to tell. All right. Yeah. Well, I think you have some good, you went wheeling so you got
better stories than I have, especially once I get to Saturday. So Wednesday, I went to the Sacramento
Republic game. Not all that went on that day. It was a pretty good day, but we, the assistant,
we didn't have the mini assistant this last week. She was with her dad. And so we went to go watch
one of the assistant's friends who plays the ukulele. She had a little show at Beachhead
deli. And then we left that a little early and we drove down to Sacramento and we went to see
the Sacramento Republic's game. And then nothing really after that, we just came home and had a
chilled day. That was Wednesday. Thursday, we took the assistant's car in to get looked at because
she took her vehicle to big O and to get a tire rotation. Can I just say for a second that big
O is such a funny name for a tire place? Any company? Yeah. So continue. I'm drinking my wine.
Okay. You're allowed. She took her car to big O a little while ago and they came back with like
your upper control arms are bad, your lower control arms are bad, your struts need to be
replaced, your valve cover is leaking, your oil pan is leaking, you need a coolant flush.
You know, just like all these things, right? Oh, your spark plugs need to be replaced,
like all these things, right? And so, and so I was like, okay, let's, let's look,
let's, let's go one, let's go get a second opinion. Two, what are this list of things
that I want to do or what are these be, which ones actually need to get done? And so I'm like,
do you feel like your car is not riding correctly or is it like a loose handling or is it an
uncomfortable ride? And she's like, no, it's fine. I'm like, okay, striking all that, all the control
arms and struts and yeah, all that's off the books. But it is making a weird funny noise in the front.
Like when you start the car, it sounds rough. Okay. And so I was like, maybe there's a timing
chain issue and that it sounds like it could be slapping like it's a timing chain or something
funky like that. So I was like, let's take it in to go get a second opinion about that. And then
if it is a timing chain, they've got to pull off the valve cover. They've got to replace all this
stuff. Everything that was kind of on this list was like, all to get in to do a timing chain thing.
So I was like, maybe that's what they were sort of saying, but the assistant didn't
understand. And so we took it into this other shop in Orangeville, who we've dealt with once
or twice. And they came back and said, no, we don't think it's a timing chain issue. You're just
very low on oil. Oh, okay. And we're like, okay, well, what about the valve cover? And they're
like, no, like, we didn't give them the list from big O. Okay. So they're like, no, everything
everything on the outside looks good. You don't really have a lot of leaking or anything else.
You're just seems like you're just burning oil. Interesting. We're like, okay, I'm like, how's
the coolant? And he's like, actually, that was a little low too. I'm like, okay. So if you're
saying the coolant was a little low and oil was really low, are we talking head gasket here? And
he's like, I mean, there's always he said there's always a possibility. But these engines and
it's a 2013 CRV. These engines are not prone for head gasket issues. Okay. He said, let's
let's top everything off. Let's put or let's do an oil change. Let's top it off. Let's top off
the coolant. Let me do a pressure check on the coolant system. Okay. And then we can figure it
out from there. So it sounds good. I could really I like the shop already. Me too.
Yeah. I'll get to more. Okay. And so he did a pressure check and he came back to us and he's
like, the pressure is fine in your coolant system. So you're not leaking cool. It was just was old
and evaporating or just being time. Refreshing. Yeah. Yeah. Just time to clean that out.
And then he said, what we did is we filled your coolant or your oil up to a certain spot. They
said, drive it for 500 miles and bring it back here. And we're going to, we took a photo of it.
Okay. And we'll come back and we'll then we'll look back at it and see if you're losing oil
really fast. Okay. Or if it's slow or if you're losing it at all, or if this was just a freak
thing or any of that. I said, cool. And I was like, but one of the things on the list that we need
to do is a transmission flush. And he said, well, let's not worry about that yet. Let's figure out
if your engine's okay. And then let's get back and deal with your transmission. And I was like,
okay. And I was like, yeah, these guys, like they care as much about my money and time as they do
their shop kind of making a little bit of money. And I was really happy about that. So all that
happened. I think most shops would be like, yeah, let's just do it all. You want it done? We'll do
it. We'll take care of it. Yeah. So I had a really good experience at this place. If you're in the
Sacramento area, Orangevale, on the border of Folsom and Orangevale is called Moore's Garage.
Okay. I give them so far. I'm giving them two thumbs up. So I really like them. This is also
the place that I took Clifford. And they said that I had oil in my coolant and that they were like,
we don't want to do, we don't advise you to do like, I just was in for an oil change. He's like,
you need to figure out more like what's going on. And this is the same spot. So I just drove down
there and dumped a bunch of oil and Clifford and drove it away. But I actually had a $100 gift
certificate to them and they just gave me the $100 gift certificate back and didn't charge me
anything. So I give them really 22 positive reviews on this shop. Shops like that are super
rare nowadays. So anyway, so interesting things happening with the 2013 CRV. I'll know more in
a few hundred more miles. We did drive the car around a lot this weekend just trying to rack
the miles in. And then yeah, they said, we'll check it at 500 miles. And if there's not a big
difference, we're going to check it out a thousand miles and do another oil change and then see how
things are. I'm considering taking the getting the oil from them or yeah, probably from them,
because they're going to, well, they'll have them look at it and then sending it off to that place
to get the review done. And so I've always wanted to try that spot out. So anyways, that's what was
going on on Thursday. The assistant went on a walk with her, one of her friends. She dropped the car
off and then they did that. And then I went to go pick the assistant up and then we went to go pick
the car up later. So that was Thursday. Friday was, I was supposed to work on Bobcat. That was
my whole intentions of Friday. But I got sucked into doing computer work and snail armor things.
And I had to change my prices on snail armor because aluminum is skyrocketing right now. And so
I wanted to consult with you and I forgot that you were out of town. And so you came home and I
think you answered my texts on Thursday night or Friday, Friday. And then I was like, oh crap. So
then I fell into this like, I got to redo my website and pricing and change things all over. And I
was dealing with the laser or the laser coder, powder coder guy that I was working with. And so
like I got just lost in time for the most part with for Friday. And by the time I got a lot of it
done, we were within an hour or so of dinner. And I was kind of like, I don't want to go get dirty
for like 40 minutes and then come back. And then we were planning to, we were going to monks for
dinner, just a little celebration for the end of the week. So I was just like, okay, so I just
relaxed for a little bit. Do you remember that time? I don't know how many years ago it was,
but I came over and we were working on one of the vehicles and we just got completely like dirty
and greasy. And then the ladies were like, Hey, let's go wine tasting this afternoon. And we're
like, all right, I guess we need to call this early and go home and clean up and everything.
And both of us just kind of went home and semi-cleaned up and wore long sleeve shirts.
We showed up to the wine tasting and the girls were like, oh, you guys look so good.
And I was like, yeah, I don't look under my sleeves and you're like, me too.
Yes. Is that when we went all the way up to fair play? I think so. Yeah. Yeah, that was funny.
Yeah. So that was sort of my gist. It was like, I could go out and get all dirty right now and
weld and grind and play in the grease. And, or I could just sit here for a little bit and
decompress and relax and then go out to monks. And that's what we did or what I did. And then,
so we went to monks and we sat down and we had dinner and one of our favorite bartenders was there.
And we just, you know, like I ordered an old fashioned and then I ordered a light beer and
then I turned to the assistant and I'm like, are we Ubering home tonight? And she's like,
yeah, you know, we don't have the kid. Let's hang out. I was like, okay. So then
by the time the tequila shots came out, I should have stopped drinking.
I feel like this is a theme with you and the assistant.
Yes. I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing.
That's funny. It always going to be a good time when it says, so we're going to stop and slow
down. But by the time the tequila shots came out and one of the things is I actually really
don't like tequila. I'm not a big fan of tequila. I can sip on some nice ones, but I'm not,
I don't shoot. I don't like shooting. I think that's really, I'm not a fan of shooting and
whenever tequila comes out, most people want to shoot tequila and I would much prefer to sip
the whiskies or tequilas or any of it. And I know that there are a lot of people out there to be
no, some good tequila, you want to sip it. But whenever tequila comes out around me,
it seems to be a shooter. Regardless, we closed bunks down and we walked out with our friend
bartender, the guy that has the Jeep that I worked on the other day and a friend, another
bartender, and we walk out and they're playing classic EDM music concert at the Goldfields next
store. Oh, and the assistant goes, can we just hang out here and watch for a little bit? And so
we're standing around the four of us are standing around watching and because they're in the industry,
they know like all the bouncers next door and the one of the bouncers guys is like,
you guys just want to go in and we like look around and we're like, yes, there you go. So we
walk in and then we walk through Goldfields up to the second story and they know the bartender
and then this is where things get a little hazy for me. I thought we only had two drinks.
Supposedly we had four. There was dancing involved and I don't remember leaving and I barely
remember the car ride home and Saturday was horrible. And so I told myself that I was like,
I didn't get any work done on Bobcat today, Friday and Saturday, we don't really have anything going
on. I'm just going to work on Bobcat on Saturday. That's my goal. Okay. I slept in until noon.
And I was so hungover. I watched both soccer games from the couch. The assistant was motivated
on Friday and started washing the couch and like steaming it and cleaning it.
And when I got down to the couch, it still had like no cover cushions on it and stuff. And I'm
like, what am I going to do? I don't have anywhere to lay down. Yeah. So Saturday was a complete
waste of time. I was, I was pissed. Like I was actually really upset at myself because I did not
plan on, it just went too far. I didn't plan on it. And I really wasted a day.
By the time the tequila shots came out though, looking back on it, I should have been like,
it's time. We don't need to continue the night on. That's pretty funny. We were both pretty rough
that next day. So, and then Sunday, nothing happens out of day. We were like, we ate a
piece of toast for breakfast. Vegemite? No, okay. We had a little, like we had a small bowl of like
some pasta thing that we made for lunch. And I don't even know if we ate dinner.
We must have had something for dinner, but actually we, I know we ate something for dinner
because I was feeling a little bit better by then. Sunday rolls around and we were going
whitewater rafting. We were driving there and it said the best way to get there was through the
up to Auburn and down 49. And I was going through the confluence there and the assistant goes,
can you slow down a little? I'm not feeling that good still. We're about to go whitewater rafting.
And but everything was okay for the most part in the long run. But we got there and we, our friends
won the rafting trip in a raffle. And so, and I guess there was very limited communication on
the whole entire thing. And we were sort of like a bonus raft for this company. And the guide
wasn't planning on leaving until noon, but they told us to get there at 10.
Right. And we're like, uh, okay. And the other, there was six of us total.
Did you stage at Camp Lotus or like the rafting company's property?
Rafting company's property on 49, a little below Camp Lotus below barking dog.
Yeah. There's, there's a string of 10 to 15 companies that own all those properties along
there. And, and his thing was, oh, I wasn't like the plan was to make you guys lunch.
And then we would raft down the river. And, and the four, the two other couples that were with us
were like, we literally just ate at Camp, Camp Kaloma or what? Kaloma can't club. Yeah. Yeah.
The Kaloma club just before we showed up here. We're not, we're not going to be hungry
for a while. You know, is there any way that we can just like eat on the river or anything?
And he's like, oh yeah, we can, we can probably do that, but I have a bunch of setup to do because
I wasn't planning for you guys to be here until like noon. And we're like, okay. So we hung out
for like an hour till around 11. And then the guy like laid out sandwich stuff. And then we made
our sandwiches and then we jumped in the river right on their property. Okay. Um, but it was a
rafting, rafting waters, rafting something, rafting in waters or something like that.
Yeah. It's one, I don't want to say one of the newer companies, but
they've been around for a while. I know what you're talking about. They were right by
American, American Express or something like Whitewater Express or something. Yeah. Yeah.
They're right there. And so, um, he was great. He used to work for the company for a long time.
And then he just sort of helps out whenever they need it. And he's all volunteer for them.
And so he's like, this, it was a perfect trade off for like,
it was a raffle prize. So they kind of made all the money as that. And he's volunteering and he
brought his nephew out and he kept calling himself the fun uncle, you know, and the nephew loves
rafting and wants to be a guide and he was like 14 or something years old. And, um,
they knew a lot about the river. So they were playing pranks on each other and on us.
Okay. Like at one point there was this raft or this rock and it was like right at water level,
right below water level, enough for the boat to go across it. But the kid just stepped out,
like at the last minute and stood on the rock. It was like, what the heck? You know,
you left me behind, you know, me standing in the middle of the river in the middle of the white
water. Um, but it was fun. It was, it was a very odd day for Sacramento. It was like 98 degrees
and super humid, super humid, super. I was like, this is east coast weather. This is not California.
What is going on? And what was, what sucked about that white water rafting is there wasn't the sun
to warm you up. And so you jumped in the water and it's cold and you get out of the water
and you're still cold and you don't really dry off and they kept wanting to do things that
involved us getting into the water. Like anybody wanted to swim this rapid. I think it was upper
haystack or something like that or haystacks you can swim. Yeah. And so he's like, this is a super
deep rapid. You're not going to have any problems. Keep your toes up, you know, all the basic stuff.
And I was like, I'll swim it. And so like we started to get into the rapid and the guys like
hop out. And so like I hopped out and I swam the rapid and he's like, I'm so happy you hopped out
where you did. Most people get scared because they see the big wave and won't, they'll wait until
like halfway through the rapid and then they don't experience it. I'm like, oh no, I'm not.
This is fun stuff for me. There was a spot down the river that they called it like the toilet bowl
and it just recirculated you around and around and you jumped in it. And then we went down
lower haystacks backwards and the assistant called it the enema rapid.
We went up the ramp rock where you like ramp up it and then it spins you like 180 degrees.
We almost all fell out in Satan's cesspool. Really? Yeah. He just, we just hit it at a
fun, fun, slow. Like he knew what he was doing. And we like, yeah, we spun and we like spun right
into a rock and sat there and all the photographers are right there taking our photos.
Yeah. Son of Satan's is also really fun to do that in. Okay. Yeah, that might a,
that's a lower one, right? That's the, yeah. So you got Satan's cesspool and immediately after Son
of Satan's and it's a, it's a big wall of water, right? So you can hit it just right and then kind
of climb up this pillow of water up on the wall and then spin off super quick and go down a little
drop. Yeah. And I, right around there was the jumping rock that we jumped off of right before
hospital bar. That one. Yep. Yep. Right before hospital bar. Yeah. Yes. I believe so. But it
was a fantastic trip. We had a great time. The guy that I was going with Josh Cyclops,
you remember that conversation? He was totally scared, not scared. He was just,
didn't know what to expect and he was worried about it. Has he never done white water rafting
before? I guess. Like he maybe has done like the San Juan Rapids, you know, like class one
thing. And so he was like, just not knowing what to expect. And I'm like, dude, this is probably
the best, easiest, most commercially traveled river out at least in this general area. West
of the Mississippi. It's the most commercially traveled river. Yeah. And it's so much fun.
It's a fantastic one. And it's, it kind of, what's great about it, what I liked about it is it
builds. It's, you start with like twos, maybe hit a three, and then you hit a bunch more twos,
and then you do some big threes. And then you hit, I think hospital bar is probably still a three.
There was also a rapid that only was happening at the whatever level the river was below hospital
bar, but it was pretty fun. That one's called a guide. Is it guide extra extra? It's something
grab. Yeah. Once the, you're later in the season and the lake water is dropped. It's a,
it kind of funnels you into this really tight, narrow drop. Yeah. And it launches guides. It's
the guide launcher, launcher rapid, I think. Yeah. Yeah. And we were, we went right down that right
after the sheriff's pontoon boat was going down. So that was kind of funny to see the
sheriffs go down it and he went down it and he just drenched the guy that was in the front of
the sheriff. So that was kind of funny. But it was a great trip. We had a, we had a great time
at the end. Josh was like, that was fun. That was perfect. That's exactly what I wanted it to be.
Yeah. He, it was funny cause it was, it was his first rafting trip. You'll appreciate this.
He kept wanting to stick his ore in the water and move the boat around and make sure it was
straight. And he was that guy, right? He was like, no, we're going a little crooked. Like
and the assistant was right behind him and she kept hitting him. Stop, stop it. He's turning
the boat. He's going to tell you where to go. He's going to tell us if we, we're only here
if he wants us to move forward or back. So he doesn't have to do it. Right? Otherwise, you know,
and we were talking to him before and he said, yeah, the, the goal of the guide is, or the purpose
of the guide is to get you guys down the river if you are rowing or not. Yeah. You know, and it only
makes things more fun and easier and safer if you guys do a few rows every once in a while.
If you're engaged in the process. Yep. Yep. And so it all and all it became a great time.
It was a lot of fun. We had a good trip afterwards. We went to, oh, what's the really big rapid that's
on the top section thunder? Trouble maker. Trouble maker. There's a trouble maker tap house. Oh,
up there now. Okay. It's little, it's not quite to where 49 and Camp Lotus Road and that all comes
in. It's not, it's, it's before the bridge, but not where hotshots is. It's a little before that.
All right. Kind of where the street light is. Okay. So cool. Really? Really, really cool spot.
They had some good food, really good food. They had a 10 things on tap and then a bunch of bottles
and things, bottles and wine, beer and wine. Right next to the Shell gas station. Yes. Okay. So that
used to be Marcos. Okay. When I was guiding in that area, that was Marcos and that was where
all the guides after every day when the area would come and grab pizza and live music and drinks.
They have a great live music stage. Yeah. They divided it. I have never been there,
but it looks like it's divided well for they have like a play structure for children. They have the
stage area. They have like big old lounge chairs out in the stage area, but good seating up by
the bar. It was a really cool spot. So it's called trouble maker tap house now. Yeah. Trouble maker
tap room or something like that. Okay. Cool. Super cool spot. Nice. Maybe whoever bought it
from Marcos just leveled it up. Yeah. And it was packed. Super packed. That's the happen in place
to be. It's either that or the Coloma Club. The Coloma Club is usually on the weekends. Yeah.
Weekdays was usually Marcos or Trouble Maker tap room tap house. A bunch of people told us to go
there. Yeah. Cool. Like our guide said, you know, it was funny because the guide was listening to
us talking to the assistant and I were kind of like, yeah, we're still a little hungover because
and the guide was like, you guys should go to the tap house after this trouble maker. And then we
met some other people on the trip. They're like, are you guys going to trouble makers after this?
We're like, I guess we got it. So that was pretty cool. That was a lot of fun. So that was Sunday.
We got the mini assistant back Sunday. I don't know if any other co-parenting parents have
the same problem that we have, but whenever, whenever the mini assistant is at the house with
her dad, really she has no real responsibilities. So then when she comes back to us, she has a
bunch of responsibilities and she breaks down because she doesn't want to do those responsibilities.
And she's at the point in her life where she'll throw a tantrum again. And then so like, we have
a really great beginning. Like, hey, I'd love to see you. So happy you're home. All, you know,
warm, happy feelings. And then, okay, go practice piano or it's time for you to do your chores or
hey, the laundry's still out. You need to fold your laundry or all these things happen. She gets
all upset, starts crying, takes herself upstairs, is in a room for like an hour, and then we'll come
out and apologize for her mood swing. And then we'll carry on with our lives. So that was our
typical normal Sunday afternoon. Besides that, then Monday came rolling around. I got a bunch of
panels out and I had a bunch of hours to set aside to try to get Bobcat going because I wasn't able
to work on it on Friday. I was a lazy duck on Saturday. So I, for the most part, pretty much
finished the rear axle, I think. Nice. Yeah. So I had everything cut out last time. This time I had,
I made a, well, I had a whole cut in my housing because I was removing the drain plug and adding
a thicker plate on the bottom side. And the bonus of doing a little bit of this work is I can ever
so slightly reduce the ground clearance of the housing in the mix while doing this.
I mean, it's, it's yes, you reduce the ground clearance, but I think it's more valuable that
you're just eliminating the drain plug there. Like the drain plug in that location, yeah,
that's the lowest point on the axle housing, which is kind of keeps the purpose of the drain
plug, right? But it's in such a bad spot. You just, you hit it on everything for wheeling,
for off road, for rock crawling, right? You hit it on everything. And so it gets smashed up and
destroyed and you can't get the drain plug out or you hit it enough so that it actually comes
undone and then drains your axle on the middle of the trail. And it's just like, it's just,
it's useless there for rock crawlers. So I think that's the real benefit is just getting rid of it.
That is the main benefit. The side benefit is I gained, I reduced that overall housing about
a quarter of an inch. And then if you want to include the bump out for the drain plug,
I probably reduced it maybe a half inch, maybe. So I did gain some ground clearance.
15, 30 seconds. Yeah, whatever. I did reduce, I did gain some ground clearance. I did add a
bigger plate for more strength and more protection underneath. And I did get rid of the drain plug.
And so that two welds looked really good. Thank you. Yeah, they're good. That was nice.
I was very proud of myself. And it was, yeah, so I cut a bunch of slits in the plate. I opened the
plate up so that I could, because it was like an eight inch round plate and I needed to be like
maybe a 10 inch diameters thing radius and then radius. And then I should have cut that down,
but that all I had was like an eight inch radius. So I needed to make it wider. But in the benefit
of that is then I was able to make it flatter and get some more of the ground clearance out there.
So I cut a bunch of slits in it to make it easier for me to bend open. Once I found the radius that
I liked, I bent it wider open because then I had to weld all those cuts up. And when I welded all
those cuts, all the heat goes, all the heat, shrink it right back down and shrink it more
than I anticipated. And now it was bent more and my hole, I had a bigger hole than the plate allowed
or then the plate filled. So I was like, well, maybe I have a press, maybe I can just stick it
in my press and like press it out. And that totally did it. Nice. Yeah. And so I was like,
did I need to do all this in the first place? Like, could I just press it flatter in the first place?
Probably, probably could have. So yeah, so then once I got it set, I held it in there and I tacked
it in the middle on both sides just to see kind of like, is this what I want? Is this what I like?
And it was. So then I welded the two sides, the short sides up, and then I ground down the housing
to match the best match the plate. And that's where I took off roughly a quarter inch of the
housing there. And then I welded up the rest of the plate. And then I sanded that all down and
then I flipped it over and then I welded the inside as best as I could. Three out of the four
sides look fine, but the one that's on the back side inside of the of the plate and on the housing
is like the gun barely fits in there. And that's like, I have no visual. I actually was using
a mirror at one point. Oh, wow. I was using a mirror and looking at where the holes were for
where the studs came through. And I put some big tacks on each other side of that. So then when
I am trying to look through, I can see where to start and stop. That's your tax again. Yeah,
my tax. I still got in the way. So I still had to use a tap and die set to clean out those threads.
So yeah, that all worked out really well. So the game plan for the most part is to use the
two studs. I took those out and put bottom ones to bottom studs. Thank you. I'm going to I took
those out and I'm going to put bolts in there. And so if I ever need to drain the differential,
I can just pull the two bolts out and open up the filler and then that'll let the flow happen. It
will take a longer time to drain it than the drain plug dip would have. But now I don't have the
drain plug and I don't have to worry about it. And it'll yeah. And it just takes a little bit
longer to drain out. Yeah, that's how I have the the diffs on Kermit. Yeah, that's how the front
is on Bobcat. Yeah, it's already done. I got that trick from you. Yeah, I did get one piece of
feedback from Dave Pfeiffer. Okay. And he said, did you put your third member in before you fully
welded that out? And I said, no, I did not. Do you think I warped it? And he said there's a very
high chance that the heat might have warped the front face because it's only the front face of
that third. Yeah. And I was kind of like, oh, and I was like, can I tell if I should just be able
to drop my third member on right and tell? He's like, yeah, if it doesn't even go on, you probably
warped it. It went on smooth. From what I can tell, it looks relatively flat. He said I should
probably heat it up again and then put the bolt the third on and then cover it and cover it with
like a big fiberglass tarp or something. So that holds the heat and drain slowly. Probably if it is
warped or bent, then that would possibly straighten out. But I wanted to say that out to everybody
because if you're going to do this, put the third in there to do all the big welds on there and to
help prevent any warpage from happening. So I thought that was a really good advice that something
I didn't think of doing. And there's always somebody better out there. And I appreciate Dave
for telling me, giving me that advice for next time if I ever do this. So that was really cool.
Everybody else said, oh, that's really cool. But yeah, nobody ever, nobody said it.
Told me about something else like that. So yeah. And so that's where Bobcat is now. So my game plan,
I think I want to put like a bash plate on the back, but I can do that kind of at another time.
I'm probably going to put the axle underneath the vehicle now because I need to start getting
the drive shaft figured out because I'm really getting on a time crunch like I'm behind schedule now.
I didn't get to really work on it all week and I screwed up on Saturday.
What's the time frame you're looking to have this done by?
The last weekend of the month. For July. Yeah. I think that's or the beginning of April.
That's right. The slow counting crawlers are going out to do their trail maintenance. So
I have, you know, we're coming up here on what the weekend of the 18th.
And so I have two full weeks, but that's really how long a drive shaft takes.
And this upcoming weekend, we are gone Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
and the assistant wants to go out of town Thursday, Friday, Saturday, next weekend too.
Oh, geez.
And so I was like, so I have seven days to get Bobcat done over the next three weeks.
And so you got to put the axle into tomorrow and get measurements for the drive shaft and get
him over to SAC drive line by by tomorrow by the end of day tomorrow. Yeah. That might be
that might be how it comes down. Yeah. I might be able to get them down there.
We're supposed to go out of town on Thursday, but I might be able to make the detour to SAC
drive line on the way out. So yeah, that's I'm not sure how that how all that's going to go,
because it putting the drive shaft up is not going to be as easy because I still have to make
some brackets and figure some of that out. So for the carry bearing that or I maybe I'll just pay
and express like a rat. What do they call that a rush charge or something to try to get some of it
done? So anyways, my game plan tomorrow Wednesday is to get the drive shaft at least hanging in
position that I think it's going to be. There's not a lot of movement in the rear drive shaft
because it's centered. And so and there's not I mean, Bobcat gets a decent amount of droop,
but it's not. I mean, it's only springs, so it doesn't get a ton of droop. So I have a little
bit of wiggle room, especially with the slip yoke there at the diff. But yeah, so the next
plan is to set up the drive line, set it in place and get it going and hopefully be able to drop
it off here in the near future. Okay. Yep. That's that's my story. Cool. So that sounds good. Good
luck getting all that done with being gone for essentially a week of your two weeks. I know.
Yeah, it's I'm we'll see. We're we're gone this weekend for sure. We're doing a family trip with
the assistant stepdad, our annual Shasta trip. When we go to Shasta, like normally we do it
earlier in the year, but something got in the way. And so we had to postpone it to a little late
a few weeks, months or so later. But the next weekend is still up in the air. We don't know
what we're doing. We we have the weekend free and we have the kiddo. And so we wanted to go do one
thing and it got canceled. And then we want to go do second thing and it got sort of canceled.
And then this third thing came online and it involves like it actually involves going up to
like Bend, Oregon and going to see family and going up there and spending more time out that way.
And I'm like, Ben, like drive to Bend. It's like a 78 hour drive. And we'll be there for
four days. We're a four day trip. So that's we're gone for four days. Right. Well, it's a four. No,
we're driving on Thursday there for Friday, Saturday, driving on Sunday. Gotcha. Right.
And it's like, that almost breaks my rule of like travel time versus time you're there. Yeah.
But yeah, I don't know. We'll we'll end up seeing what we decide to do. But as of right now, it's
leaning towards how we're gone Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, next week as well. Wow. Yeah.
Fun times. Yeah. I'm going to just drink my wine. Perfect. Enjoy it. It's opening up a little bit.
It's good. All right. Well, yeah. Good luck with all that. Thank you. I went out to Barrett Lake.
Yeah. With the wife being unemployed at the moment. Right. We took Reed out of daycare to
played hooky. Cool. And we went up to Barrett Lake Wednesday, Thursday and came home Friday.
Okay. And so packed up Fiona drove the trailer up drove the trailer. Yeah. Wow. So we took the
trailer up to Barrett. Okay. How did I didn't even know the trailer out of motor? Yeah, it's pretty
nice. Yeah. I upfitted it. Yeah. Where do you steer? Just a little one wheel in the front of
the tongue. You kick it. Yeah. Has a little steering wheel like a go kart. Nice. Sit on the
tongue box. Yeah. Exactly. There's no seat belts on it though, but family sits in Fiona and I sit
on the tongue box. Perfect. You should hook the steering wheel of Fiona up to that wheel.
His wine's getting good. So a couple of things with Fiona. I was like, it'd be so much easier
just to drive Fiona up there, but I've got that ball joint issue where the ball joint keeps
coming loose. And I still have a rear ring and pinion with three different patterns worn into it.
Sure. So I'm like, I'm just playing with fate at the moment. So I'm going to take the trailer
because a, we're by ourselves. Yeah. So worst case scenario, we can at least get out and spend
the night in the camper before we call for help to help us get the vehicle off the trail kind of
thing and onto the trailer. But so I parked the trailer at the little turnout before the road
that goes over to ice house or just after that road and then went up and got on the trail and
I'm happy to report Fiona fits through the gate. Oh, I'm sure it does. Yeah. Really? It's about
the same amount of clearance that Kermit has. Oh wow. Yep. And so the WMS, not the WMS, the
track width. So from bead lock ring to bead lock ring, I don't want to say bead lock ring,
the tires outside, tired outside tire side walls is 88 and a half roughly in the front,
almost 89. Okay. And then like 86 in the rear on Fiona. So it's like the opposite. It's the
opposite of Kermit. Yeah. So Kermit is like 89 in the rear and 86 in the front pretty much.
So yeah, Fiona got through the gate, just fine rubbed the bead lock rings on both sides going
through. So squeeze the tires, rub the bead lock rings on the front axle and then got up through.
And I haven't been on Barrett Lake in like two years. There's a year and a half. October 2024
was last time I was out there. And so went through and I just kind of stopped and looked at stuff
quite a bit because I'm by myself. Haven't been there for a while. I'm in a new vehicle to me
on that trail. So I'm not sure exactly how it's going to handle on the trail and how it's going
to do. And I have a loose ball joint that likes to keep loosening up the driver's side
and a rear ring opinion that is compromised. Yes. So I stopped, got out, took a look at gatekeeper
and I was like, I think I could take a different line through gatekeeper. Yeah. Usually there's two
lines through gatekeeper, high driver up on the wall and then kind of come down as you come around
the tree or over take your passenger side over that massive rock on the inside of the turn
and in Kermit, that's the line I take. I go up over that massive rock on the passenger side.
And Kermit's super wide. I can do that. Tons of ground clearance works just fine.
Fiona does not have that ground clearance. Fiona has like five inches less ground clearance than
Kermit does. Yeah. So I was like, I don't think I can do that. And I'm looking at the up high
wide one and like I could probably do that. But I think I can take Fiona and boof the inside rock.
That's what I do. Yeah. And I've never been able to do that before in Kermit. It's either
high driver, high passenger. And I was like, I think I can come in and kind of go wide
with the front end and then cut it back in really tight and then drag the rear passenger
wheel across that inside rock and it lined up perfectly and just one shot it straight through
didn't catch up on anything. And I was like, that worked cool. I've never, I haven't taken that line
before. Yeah. So I guess it's a longer wheel base line that you can do to just kind of swing
and drag the back ass end around. I don't know. That's the, that to me is the route I normally
take. Interesting. Okay. I feel like me falling against that rock and my slider kind of being
on the rock and the tire being on the rock, then I'm not falling into the tree. Okay. Yeah. That's
a good point. So I've always, that's the, and if I get to, because I'm narrow, I can't go too high
on the wall or I'll sell Rodney. Yeah. Yeah. Rodney or Tom it or was it Tom rolled? Yeah.
Oh, Tom Rosa. Tom Rosa rolled and gatekeeper last time, October.
Oh, I thought that was Rodney's rig. No, Rodney came through and he smashed his
as B pillar on his way out. I think it was. Okay. Yeah. So no, I think it was on the way in
because he hit this roof too, hit his roof and smash the B pillar. So I think it was on the way
in. Dang. But anyways, yeah, it was great going through gatekeeper. That was fine.
Cruise to the trail at a decent pace. What's great about the Barrett Lake trail is that the
gatekeeper is pretty much a gatekeeper. It's one of the actual gatekeepers left in the Sierra
Nevada. It's like, it's pretty much the hardest obstacle on that trail. Yeah. There are some
other hard obstacles on that trail, but this one's, yeah, if you can't make the gatekeeper,
you should not do the rest of that. Yes. So if you're winching your way through it, then yeah,
you're, you're cheating. Yeah. You're using your tools. So I'm proud of you. Right.
But like the thing about Barrett Lake, like Fiona does Rubicon really, really well, right?
Kermit does Rubicon really, really well. The thing I didn't anticipate with Barrett was how
often I would hit the undercarriage on Fiona. Oh, really? I smacked the living bejesus out of the
sliders and the lower control arms, the links, the lower links on Fiona and the skid plate a lot
on that trail. And I was like, I've never hit the bottom. I fit my sliders a couple of times on
Barrett like through the rock garden and whatnot with Kermit. Yeah. Yeah. But I've never like hit
the skid plates and the lower links and just I hit a lot of the undercarriage on Fiona going
through there. And I was like, I've always told people like you really need like
minimum 35s to get through Barrett and then you're still going to be like dragging and
scraping your way through some sections. Like you really need to be on like 37s or more,
especially in a JK, JKs and JLs. They just sit low. Yeah. And so you really need to be on like
38s or 40s to not bang up your undercarriage and like Fiona on 40s. I was beating the living
crap out of my undercarriage to say, do you feel like you need to have more than 35s now
that's on Fiona 40s on to run that trail. You feel like right now the way the trail sits. There's
in two years. So I forgot where some of the rocks are. Yeah. And Fiona has shit vision.
You we've talked about it, right? It's just a it squats the lower end. Once I'm trail loaded
trail loaded the back end of the rig sits like 56 inches lower than the front end. Yeah.
And so just the driver. I'm just all I can't. I never looked down on the trail. Sure. And then
the hood is so much bigger on Fiona than Kermit. So that just it limits your vision
a lot. And so there was a couple of times where I'd come around a corner off the climb or something
and just go up and high center myself on a rock because I don't know the rock is there. I'm just
kind of climbing. I'm like, I'm wide. I can climb whatever and then come down and turtle myself on
the passenger side or something or get turtled up on the lower links. So there was two in particular
times where I was pretty jammed up and I got out to kind of look at things and I had a tire
hanging up in the air because I was just turtled up on stuff. Yeah. So I always turtle right after
that S turn after the S turn in that area. Yeah. That's a big one. So that little spot there. You
don't go over those two rocks anymore. What? That's the trail has been has enough people have gone
around it that have gone around those rocks to the fur to widen the S. Yep. Yep. Wow. Yeah.
Boring. Yeah, I know. And I was like, oh, that's boring, but I'm by myself. So I'm going to go that
way. Yeah. So anyways, the trail is in great condition. There's definitely some decent holes
for being this early in the season in the rock garden. Gatekeeper has a couple of pretty gnarly
holes in it. Those are really the only two of concern. The waterfall area and the V notch at
the end is fun as always. Yeah. There's doesn't really get any worse or any better. It's just a
bunch of granite rocks. So it was good. The trail is fine. I got through it in about three and a
half hours in Fiona, which is a pretty average pace. Yeah. If you're between three and four
hours, I think that's an average pace for your average person to do bear like
definitely slower, way slower than I was anticipating them. I'm used to Kermit
going through Barrett and Kermit has five extra inches of ground clearance than Fiona
and a way better vision than Fiona. So like I can get through Barrett and Kermit like two hours.
Right. So and so yeah, being by myself with the family. Yep. Which means you were going
slower, which anyways, we're going slower anyways of the family to you and kept hitting and getting
caught up on stuff. I was getting pretty frustrated by the end of the trail. So we got into camp and
set up camp and I was just like, I just need a minute to relax, have a drink and where we get.
But we went in on Wednesday. Yeah, middle of the week. So there's nobody there. It was awesome.
Super fantastic. I love it's still my favorite place in the Sierras
is just hanging out at Barrett Lake. Once you're at the lake and just chilling and hanging out.
Right. So that night, that evening as dusk started happening and the mountains got all
super bright red, right? Tons of fish really tons of fish jumping everywhere during dusk
for about 45 minutes to an hour. Dang just everywhere. I was like, I've never seen this
much activity from fish out here. Like you'll see fish jumping every once in a while. Yeah.
But this was like constant at any given time. You could see three to five fish jumping across
the lake. I was like, this is absolutely crazy. Like somebody needs to be out here in a little
pontoon float or wade 20, 30 feet out. Cause it's a really shallow lake. Yeah. You could
wade 20, 30 feet out and be, you know, stomach to chest height up there and fly fishing. I was
like, anybody going out fly fishing at dusk at Barrett Lake, you're going to catch some good
stuff. I think sounds fun. So if you guys want some good fishing, get out to Barrett Lake,
get your fishing license and take a fly rod and some waiters. So yeah, you can, you can't do a lure
in that lake. It's just too shallow. Well, and it's so grassy, super grassy in the bottom.
And the fish are just trained to go after mosquitoes. The mosquitoes were really bad this
year. Okay. So there was a lot of mosquitoes around a lot of mosquitoes in the air. So as
they're landing on the water, that's the fish are going after. That's the main source of food. So
yeah. So let's see. Camping was great. We had the whole place to ourselves Wednesday afternoon,
Wednesday night, Wednesday morning. A group came in Thursday afternoon. Okay. And it was a listener.
Oh, really? Somebody on our giveaway tier. Oh, nice. Aaron, a Aaron,
I think we only have one a Aaron. We have an air rub rub Ron. Yeah. That's a Australian,
but we only have one a Aaron. So a Aaron was out there and got to sit and chat with him. He was
out there with his dad, his dad's friend and one of his buddies. Oh, cool. And they were just out
there for a few days. They came in on Thursday and I think they went home Saturday. Nice. So we
had a, about a 12, 24 hour overlap of us being there, which campsite did you guys take? We took
the one right next to the water. So you come in the main area and take a right. Yep. And so just
pass those down trees. That's the one right there. Cool. So in my opinion, that's the best one. Me
too. The one far, far left is pretty good too though. Oh, down by the waterfall. I don't know
where that is. I'll route the farthest one around the other side at the very end. So that's over
by the waterfall. Yeah. That one's pretty good too. Of all the times I've been to Barrett Lake,
I've never gone and looked at the waterfall. Yeah, I don't know where that is because there's
always somebody in that far campsite. And so I don't want to let go walking through the campsite
and then disturb them or anything. Yeah. So this time they're with nobody there. I went over and
we explored the waterfall because pretty cool. There's a neat sweet little super shallow, just
like waiting area at the bottom of those little waterfall and you can just kind of sit in the
water and be like maybe to the top of your thighs. Yeah. Kind of thing, just sitting there
Indian style or lay down in the water and have your face sticking out of the water if it's a
really hot day kind of thing. So I was like, this is actually pretty sweet little spot. There's some
shade here and there where you can be in the shade, not being direct sunlight in there. So it's cool.
Yeah. I camped there with CJ, with the CJ, Jason from Wheeling, Waianawisky and I think Tom,
nice, his friend. Nice. The Tom that has the Bronco. Gotcha. Bronco, Tom. Yeah. That's a
really cool spot there. So we spent pretty much Thursday, just waiting around in the lake. Nice.
Yeah. I saw little photos of baby Reid in the water. Yeah. I'm excited about that. He actually
asked to get in the water. Okay. I was like, sweet. He's warming up to being in water now.
Nice. It makes my heart warm. Exactly, right? He didn't want to go swimming at all. He just
kind of stood there. Once the water got up above his knees, he was like, no. And I was like, you're
okay, dude. Chill. But for him to ask to get in the water and then kind of just
tromp around up to his knees was pretty fun. And he enjoyed it. So he also really, really
enjoyed throwing bark into the lake from the down trees. He would run over to the down tree,
pick up a big old chunk of bark and then run over to the water, throw it in the lake,
start giggling and then do it again. He'd do that for like half an hour at a time and then
find another activity and then come back to it later. So overall Barrett was fantastic.
Absolutely beautiful, gorgeous spot. The bathrooms are amazing. Huge kudos. This is the first time
I've seen the bathrooms in person. Yeah. Okay. Huge kudos to the Highlanders, to John, to
everybody that had a hand in those bathrooms. Husbands out there working on them. I know that.
So everybody that was out there and had a hand in building those bathrooms, huge kudos.
And a huge thank you. I don't think anybody from Elder Auto National Force listens to this podcast,
but if you guys ever do, thank you for trusting the off-roading community to take on that project
and do it. They're really freaking nice. So yeah, I'm really excited to hear how the
maintenance of those goes and the pumping and everything of it. So I think it's a plan that
will work really out really well and hopefully those bathrooms are there for years and years
and years to come. Nice. Awesome. Yeah. Let's see, Friday we took off, got out of camp about 10am.
Made it, excuse me, this is a good wine Cameron, made it back to the trailhead and air up and
lunch about one, I think it was. Yeah. So it's about three hours out, three and a half in. Okay.
And I realized something on the way out, your ball joints list. Oh, that too. I had to stop.
I had to tighten the ball joints once we got into camp. I was checking on them because
I had to tighten them before we left home. And then I tightened them once we got to camp.
And then I checked them once we got through the rock garden and estern on the way out.
And I was like, fuck, they're loose again. So tighten them up again. And then I tightened them
up again when we were at the trailhead and the gate airing up and getting lunch.
So they're just, they're not staying tight anymore. I need to replace them. So I'm looking at,
I'm talking with Jason about getting some ball joint eliminators from
all American iron. I think it is. So I'm talking with them. That's the company that made those
sliders that CJ has on is CJ and then I was using the box ones. Yeah. Okay. They make that
product as well. Cool. Yeah. Jason had nothing but great thing to say about the ball joint
eliminators. So he's checking in with the company to make sure that we get the right
combination of parts for the eliminators to work on that axle with those arms. Okay. So
let's see. So that was the ball joint eliminators. Rear diff is still together,
not making any noises. All right. Good. So that's still going good. But I realized on the way out
that I have a front facing camera. Yes, you do. I never used it on the way in. Okay. And I was,
and I don't remember what I was doing. I was like scrolling and looking at the cameras playing
with the wolf box or something. And the secretary goes, wait, is it, don't you have a front facing
camera on this? I was like, yeah. She goes, can't you use that to look at the rocks that you can't
see? Cause I was complaining. I was like, I never saw this fucking rock. Right? Yeah. And I was like,
yeah, but I've never had good luck with those. Like I just, they never do good. Yeah. You never
really have good depth perception. It's hard to tell where your tires are on the camera system.
And I was like, it's not going to work. I'm sure I'll try it because what I'm doing now isn't
working. And so turned on and ran the front facing camera all the way out. It worked great. Nice.
It worked great. So anytime that I had to come up around a turn or something and you just can't
see for the first 50 feet. Yeah. I was like, all right, let's look at the camera and just looking
right at the wolf box there on my dash. And I was able to see, okay, there's a rock there that I never
saw the big ass rock there. I never saw. And I finally figured out where my tires were according
to the screen on the wolf box. And I was able to start climbing and navigating the rocks on that
trail. Nice. Using the front facing camera. Whenever I just didn't have any view of the trail.
So we want a rematch of the competition that we're not allowed to talk about. Fuck you, Nino.
No, it was a
we're not. We're in. Yeah. Okay. And, and Nina.
So anyways, yeah, I will say Fiona on Barrett Lake way harder to navigate than Kermit.
Fiona is an extra 10 inches in wheelbase. Is that right? Fiona is wheelbase 118 and Kermit
is 1075. So yeah, 10 inches extra wheelbase and 10 inches extra width on the cab.
Yeah. Axles are the same width, but, and I was, so I was thinking like, yeah,
axles are the same width. If I can get through on Kermit, I'll be able to get through just fine
on Fiona. There was definitely some spots where I was like, Oh, like this is, this is really tight.
This is way tighter than Kermit. I don't have to worry about ever hitting the body with Kermit
because the body is so much smaller compared to the axles. The axles just keeps me away from
everything. But in Fiona, the body is so much wider that there was a lot of those tight squeeze
areas that I was like, I had to go very slow and I was at like one inch clearance on either side
of the vehicle. Dang. So and the extra longer wheelbase definitely made the S turn harder. I had
to make an extra, an extra Austin powers move in the S turn and the kind of the rock buggy play
rock area that has the bypass around it. I'm getting around that bypass. I had to make a
little Austin powers turn in there too because the extra wheelbase in it. So
Barrett is a really tight, windy trail. Awesome for shorter wheelbases and tinier vehicles
and bigger vehicles. You're just going to have, you're just going to have to go slower and take
your time and be more careful. Sure. So yeah, it was good. Nothing else really happened to the
vehicle. Nothing, the vehicles otherwise in great shape just had to continually tighten the ball
joint and nothing wrong with the rear ring and pinion. The rear ARB stopped leaking.
Congrats. So it's working just and sealed up just fine again. So it's not leaking anymore
while they have the locker engaged. So I'm like, all right, cool, whatever. Solved itself, I guess
for now. And so yeah, the next trip is going to be this coming up weekend. I'm going out for the
Mad Hatter summer picnic and that'll be on the Rubicon. And then I'm doing Barrett Lake with
Dave Lloyd, Forerunner Dave and husband on Sunday, Monday. So and Jason Green, aren't they going
out there this weekend? They're going out on Saturday. Oh yeah. So you guys are going to
pass each other on Sunday. Sounds like it may be. Yeah. Yeah. So we'll see. Yeah. He'll be up in
the area. I don't know if we're going to cross past though. We'll see. Okay. Yeah, they're going
up. I want to say Thursday to do the RTF loop and old sluice. Him, Dave Ainsworth and Samurai
James, I think, and maybe somebody else. Thursday, Friday, and then Saturday, they're going over a
day trip to Bear Lake. Got it. So I don't even know if I'll cross their paths. If they stop by
ice house resort to say hi to us or if we'll be out on the trail on Saturday when they come by,
I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. If they're only doing a day trip on Saturday, then you might not see
him. Yeah. So yeah, that was Barrett. And that's the coming up trip this weekend.
This coming up trip. I will be solo. No family. So that'll be kind of nice. I won't have to worry
about timing schedules, feeding schedules, nap schedules, sleep schedules, bug bugs,
dealing with people. And that's all for the secretaries. And then there's all that stuff.
And then there's all the baby. So yeah, I'll be by myself. And so we'll see how that all,
it should be nice, relaxing weekend, fun weekend. Yeah. I'm sad. I can't make it.
And there would be a lot of fun to hang out with you guys and go. I really was like,
maybe I could just run in or backpack in or something. Meet us at the lake or something.
Yeah. But I'm not getting home until Sunday afternoon evening. So it'd be like, I could
drive up there on Friday and meet you guys at the gate. But I'm like, yeah, it's a bummer.
I wish I could wheel with you guys. Yeah. I'm out of town and Bobcat's down.
Yeah. Yeah.
And Charlotte would make it that far. Charlotte might make it to the end of the gate.
Maybe that one rock in the right at the gate might foul me up. Exactly.
So that was that over the weekend. I did some work on the Lance. Okay. So I fixed the hole in
the side of the Lance. Nice. There's a nice big old door there now. The door and the cubby.
So I was originally thinking that I was going to have like that little metal cubby in there
and be able to make it enlarge. So it's the same size as the door kind of thing. Sure.
But there's a bunch of electrical and water lines going right underneath the cubby. So I can't
really enlarge the cubby anymore. And because now the door is bigger than the cubby inside,
the power line is very difficult to keep in the cubby while I'm closing the door
wants to keep falling out. So I need to rig some sort of bracket in there to like velcro the power
line up to or hang the power line on the bracket within the cubby, something like that. So
can you just like put a fascia on like a little net? Yeah, a little net up that would hook up in
there. I was just thinking of some like quarter inch piece of plywood or something that you can
just fill cover that space with or even add like 16. Yeah, maybe a little net or
would be the way to do it. Yeah, some fabric. Yeah. So I got to do that, but there's no more
hole in the side of the lance, which is nice job. And the cabinet fell off in the bathroom. I
took the backing off of the wall and restapled the backing to the cabinet and then re screwed
that up and replaced to the door latch on the cabinet. So now the door won't be swinging around
and pulling the cabinet off the wall anymore. Yay, that's awesome. Yay. So yeah, everything on the
lance is back to operating normalities and I'll be using it this weekend up at ice house resort.
Perfect. So that's all I got, sir. Sounds good. Yeah, I'm glad you got out. Glad you had a good
weekend. I'm glad I was able to not catch my shirt on fire when I was doing a bunch of grinding and
welding. So yeah, it was sounds like two good weeks. Yeah, for sure. It's good stuff. So we'll
reconvene for tomorrow's episode. Yes, snail mail for everybody out there and we'll have a good
time going through listening to you guys and your comments and your feedback. That's on Fridays. So
Thursday is kind of what we've been up to as we just went through today and then Mondays are fun
episodes where we get to help educate and entertain you guys with interviews, educational topics,
things about vehicles, etc, etc. And this Monday we have another fun interview coming into your
hole. So let's see anything else, man. I don't think so. If you guys do have any questions or
comments for us, you can always find us over on Instagram. I'm at snail trail four by four,
Tyler's at four by four to Toyota Tyler. You can email us Jimmy or Tyler at snail trail four by four
dot com or you can phone into the voicemail segment and tell us things that we missed or forgot or
need to make corrections on or just whatever the hell is going on in your life. And that phone
number is 916-345-4744. Sweet. I like it a lot. Jimmy Jett. Do you have any final words for
everybody out there? Both the assistant and I woke up with all of our clothes on. Congratulations.
That sounds like a bad thing. After that drunken night, yeah, we somehow stumbled to bed and
have the fourth thought to take our clothes off. All right. Good job.
It was just funny. And with that, my friends, keep crawling.
I got one for you. Okay. I actually, I believe you. I know this one. Oh, okay.
What did this tie say to the hat?
Something about hanging. I know it's something about hanging around,
hanging around. I don't know. You go on ahead. I'll just hang around. That's what it is. Nice.
You were close. So close.
About this episode
The hosts kick off with Wolfbox camera gear—sharing giveaway details and a group-buy plan—then pivot into their “trail token” culture, including why they avoid “GPS trackers” and how biodegradable tokens may degrade over time. The conversation turns into real-world wrenching and diagnostics on a 2013 Honda CR-V with low oil/coolant, plus a long off-road build thread: axle protection, differential service access, and driveshaft planning. The episode also includes Barrett Lake/Rubicon-style trail talk, including ground-clearance tradeoffs, camera depth-perception limits, and a bit of smoked-tainted wine recovery.
Tyler had a fantastic trip with the family out to one of his favorite places, Barrett Lake. He talked about how Fiona wheeled, and he didn’t like it, but he did learn to love the Wolfbox even more. Jimmy talked about how he has so much work to do on Bobcat, but decided to go out and get drunk and be completely hungover for his one free day.
GROUP BUY: There is a new group buy happening, and this time it is with Wolfbox for their G900Tripro. If we get ten people signed up then we will get $20 off. If we can get 20 people signed up, we will get $30 off, and if we can get 30 people signed up, then it will be $40 off. 4Wheel Underground has all the suspension parts you need to take your off-road rig from leaf springs to a performance suspension system. We just ordered our kits for Kermit and Samantha and are looking forward to getting them. The ordering process was quite simple, and after answering the questionnaire, we ensured we got the correct and best-fitting kits for our vehicles. If you want to level up your suspension game, check out 4Wheel Underground.
