Hello, and welcome back to the Fast and the Curious, the podcast that previews and
reviews the Grand Prix and speaks to some pretty cool people in and around the sport.
I'm Vettie Glover, and this is Christian Hugo.
We're not the cool people, are we Christian?
Oh, God, no.
I've never been described as cool by anyone ever in my life.
I'm the least cool person in the world.
But it's nice to be here.
How are you?
I'm good.
Thank you.
How are you?
I'm all right.
I've had a morning of it, so we're recording this in the morning, and we never record
these in the morning.
We always record these in the afternoon, and that's thrown me.
So I dreamed about the podcast last night.
I dreamed we were recording it in my old student radio studio from, like, years
ago.
That's just me out, because I couldn't get any of the recordings to work.
So I had one of those, like, not an anxiety dream, but, like, mmm, dream.
Then I missed a call this morning, because I forgot, because we were doing the podcast,
so I had to rush that.
And then I was rushing to get ready, and I'd got a tray of yogurts on the fridge,
and I pulled one out and basically took the shelf with me.
The fridge shelf comes out of my hands.
The yogurts go everywhere.
My leg is covered in salted caramel-flavoured protein yoghurt, which is
gutting, because it's my favourite yoghurt.
So then I've had to sort of rush to clean yoghurt off me, clean yoghurt off the
floor, consume some yoghurt, as was the original plan, rush to get a shower and
do the podcast.
I've had a morning.
To be fair, it is a rush when we do this in the morning.
I've been, like, trying to eat my breakfast really quickly, like, down to
coffee.
It's just...
Oh, and don't get me started on coffee.
Thanks to...
And by the way, there has been literally hundreds.
Thanks to the literally hundreds of people...
Oh, for God's sake.
...who have sent me Love and Best Wishes for the fact my coffee machine has broken.
Sat here drinking instant coffee like it's the war.
Oh, it's just...
Oh, that's disgusting.
It's just such a shame.
So...
No, I do feel sorry for you.
Oh, honestly, it's been really hard.
It's been really hard.
I'm okay.
I'm doing well.
It's a difficult life.
Yeah.
Thank you for the love and support.
It wouldn't be so bad if I was away this weekend, but I'm not at this
grand prix.
Yeah, anyway, someone's coming to fix it tomorrow, so hopefully by the
debrief it'll be done, but I'll keep you all updated.
Well, I really do feel for you, Christian.
I really do feel for you.
Sending you lots and lots of love.
I nearly didn't do this podcast.
I really didn't, but yeah.
Anyway, shall we crack on?
Coming up today in this episode, it is getting to crunch time, isn't it?
Four races, two sprints to go.
We're going to preview the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Obviously.
Obviously.
We're going to talk about McLaren as it could not be any closer between
the two of them.
And we're also going to chat the future of Ferrari.
We're also going to speak to Formula 3 and Formula 2 commentator Chris
McCarthy, who's teaming up with BBC F1's Jenny Gal for a fun new thing,
which we're going to talk about later.
But Jenny is here now to talk about everything.
Formula 1.
Jenny, how are you?
I'm good.
I have a cup of green tea winning at life.
I don't drink coffee, so I personally don't mind that Christian
isn't on the good stuff because it's okay.
And I had a slight fail this morning as well in that my stroke
brain took over from my actual brain this morning.
And I shampooed my hair twice.
Oh, that's good for your hair, though.
That's good for your scalp.
Yeah, but I was really in a rush.
I really thought it was like, I thought I picked conditioner on.
And I was like, this is really roughing up a lot.
And I realized, oh no, I've just, I've just sampled it again.
Doesn't it take women a lot longer to do that?
Because that would take me an extra like 60 seconds of my day.
Is that a longer thing for Anne Woman?
Yes.
I think it's just the length of hair.
The length of hair.
And you've got quite short, trimmed, nice hair.
Thank you very much.
Whereas for Betty and I, with slightly longer hair,
with a curling it, nightmare.
Yeah, and I should say, in the interest of inclusivity,
yeah, I suppose a gentleman with longer hair
could also take longer to shampoo.
That is very true.
Jenny, we should also just mention, before we carry on,
this is something that me and Betty picked up on.
If you're watching on the YouTube, you'll be able to see us,
which is amazing.
And Jenny's got a brilliant, like top them hotspire background.
And Betty asked, and we should ask the question,
are you a Spurs fan, Jenny?
So I have to note that my husband is the mad Spurs fan,
as is his family.
And I've kind of just got taken along for the ride.
My team is actually behind the camera
with a Portsmouth shirt on this side.
Oh!
Up the Pompey.
Exactly.
So I covered Pompey when they got promoted.
And ever since that point,
I have been a marginal Pompey fan,
but I didn't have any particular allegiance
to a football club growing up.
I just loved it, but didn't have a particular team.
So I've been very easily, I suppose, swayed,
that's the word, into supporting teams along the way.
Good win over Copenhagen in the Champions League
last night for Spurs.
Stonking.
Stonking.
Mickey van der Ven with an absolute worldie.
Have you guys watched that go?
Oh my.
I've not seen that.
I was watching Liverpool on the other side.
Insane.
Very insane goal.
I love him.
I love Mickey van der Ven.
And I don't particularly love Spurs that much.
Anyway.
Shall we stick to Formula One and stop talking about the police?
Just Formula One if you like.
I've had a nice time.
I don't know about people listening,
but I've had lovely times with just Formula One.
Yeah, fine.
Let's talk about this race.
Let's talk about the fact that there is literally
one point between Lando and Oscar.
One point.
This is going to be absolutely fascinating, Jenny, isn't it?
To see how this is going to play out,
because we've got a proper McLaren battle on our hands
for the last part of this season.
And it is actually mad when you think about it,
because Lando was training Oscar by 34 points
not that long ago.
And now he's in the lead.
And he was coasting.
He said, didn't he, at the Dutch Grand Prix,
well, you know, I can just relax.
I don't have any pressure on me now.
I can just go out, have a bit of fun.
The pressure is really on him leading the championship,
the first time since round four.
And I just wonder how that dynamic is going to shift
and tilt within the team,
because Piastri has been leading this championship
for such a long time.
Had the advantage, had the momentum,
thought it was going to be a walk in the park.
I actually predicted that he'd win this round.
And now Lando Norris has taken a lead
and it looks like it's going to go right down to the wire.
It's amazing.
It's so good, isn't it?
I cannot wait.
We needed a season like this.
We've needed it.
And we always say we started this podcast
from the worst possible season.
When was it?
Three seasons ago.
To the 2023 when Max won,
I believe Max wrapped up the title around two in China.
It's true though.
And now we've got a proper battle.
Christian, it's going to be really interesting, isn't it?
To see how Lando deals with the pressure
of being hunted.
Yeah, he is the hunted.
In other words, he was the hunter.
Now he is the hunting.
Oh, he's the hunting.
Is that easy?
Is it?
I don't know.
It's not easy, is it?
I think that there's so much pressure on Lando Norris
because for the first time in a long time in Formula One,
I mean, we're talking getting on for a decade
until the 2010 sort of season
when we had a great battle between Alonso
and Vettel and Weber.
There's so much on Norris
because he's not just got to think about Oscar,
who is his teammate,
which brings all the complications of that.
But Max is on 3-2-1.
Lando on 3-5-7.
Plus a sprint weekend this weekend,
let's not forget.
So that's another potential 10 points on the table here.
We saw what happened last time there was a sprint weekend.
We shouldn't discount the fact that these sprints
of which there are two more, including this weekend,
could have a significant impact on this title.
So there is loads of pressure
because he needs to maximise everything
from not just his teammate, but from Max as well.
I think, again, I refer back to
any time you speak to a racing driver,
they say the same thing.
You've just got to go out and do you.
And I think all he needs to do
is isolate it as a weekend.
I think he needs to forget all of that,
forget the title table, forget any of that,
go out, get to grips with it in free practice.
And also, you've got to have the flexibility,
I think, in a weekend like this,
to roll with the punches,
because I think they're going to be going out.
I've just checked the weather.
The weather is basically...
It's a stinker!
Christ knows.
It's sunny spells, showers.
We're recording this on Wednesday morning.
I bet you, by the time that some people
will be listening to this on Friday afternoon,
it will have changed again.
When I looked yesterday, thunderstorms.
Yeah.
As well.
There is spells of dry weather as well.
So it's not like they can just go,
it's going to be a solely wet weekend.
You're just going to have to roll with the punches,
stay cool, go out.
If you do Friday practice one,
we're focusing on practice one.
What can we do then?
All right, sprint qualifying.
Let's take it one step at a time.
Just focus on being the best you can be
in that particular session.
The building blocks will fall around you.
That's all Lando can do.
It's also all Oscar can do
in terms of getting himself back into form as well.
But it's not gone so well for Oscar.
That's all he had to do.
Concentrate on each race weekend.
And every race weekend,
it seems like something has got in his way.
And I don't know whether he needs a shatty change,
whether there's something going on within the team,
psychologically within him.
What's happened from Baku
when he had a bad weekend
crashed a car several times to now,
it's like he's a different driver
and he's really struggling with that car.
This is what his third season in Formula One's
really in the grand scheme.
He's still a little bit inexperienced, I guess.
And this is the first season
where he's had a lead like this.
And do you think that's part of it, Jenny?
Is that he's just...
Before you ask Jenny that question,
Jenny raised the word chassis change,
which is something a lot of people are theorizing.
Oh, very understandably so.
It's a perfectly reasonable theory,
given the struggles it had so far.
We've seen that a lot in the past
where drivers have said,
I'm struggling, change my chassis.
I think I seem to remember it happening with Schumacher.
I think it happened with Perez.
Rarely does it actually make a difference.
Rarely do you see,
yes, it was the chassis and that's fixed everything.
I also directly asked McLaren about this as well
and was told there's nothing
that shows on any of the data,
any of the telemetry that there's a chassis issue.
It's also not like Oscars feeding back,
I need a chassis change, guys.
I think there's a lot of people sort of oversimplifying
that the people are thinking that
Oscars going back and knocking on the door and going,
I want a new chassis.
My understanding is that's not the case.
And also McLaren sort of emphasized to me that
well, if they did think
there was the need to change the chassis,
they changed the chassis.
They're not just going to not do it.
They want both drivers to be
with a chance of winning this championship
because Max is knocking at the door
so there's no reason not to give Oscar a change of chassis.
This might be a stupid question,
but how easy is it to change the chassis?
Like that.
Really, really easy.
You can just do it.
They have a spare one carried with them
across the race weekend in case of a big crash
that happens.
And sometimes if there's
the thought that there might be a hairline crack
or a fracture to that chassis,
they'll just change it anyway.
And I was surprised that they didn't rebuild
that in a different chassis in Baku.
But they didn't have to.
They didn't need to.
And I get what Christine is saying.
I think it's more a psychological thing
than an actual fix for a direct problem
and listening to the feedback
from last time out in Mexico,
it sounded like Oscar was starting to understand
what the problem is with the pace
and his feeling of the car.
And whilst it's favoured Lando Norris,
it's slightly disadvantaged Oscar Piastri
in the feedback that he gets
and the feeling that he gets from that car
and being able to push it to the absolute,
like 100%,
he's not able to do it.
But through Mexico it got better.
But I'm really interested to see
how he reacts in Brazil,
how the car responds to his touch
and feel,
how he's done a lot of work on that simulator
in the meantime
to just get himself into a better place.
So you think it's just him
needing to get used to the car again
or what?
I do think so.
If you listen to Chim Principle Andrea Stella,
he spoke after Mexico
and so did obviously Piastri to the media.
He was very much until that point
at the loss of where the pace had gone.
Certainly when I spoke to him in America
he was dumbfounded.
He did not understand how all of a sudden
this car that had suited him so well
had really bonded with him
that had made him into
World Championship contender material.
All of a sudden it had gone from him
and the slight adaptations
that they've had,
bearing in mind they haven't brought on upgrade
for a very long time,
it's just not working for him
with those specific types of track.
Now Brazil is a very different type of track
and hopefully he'll get that feeling back.
And specific types of track
is exactly the point I was going to raise.
So if we go back to 2024
and we go
to the Singapore Grand Prix,
Lando won the race, Oscar was third,
USA Lando was fourth, Oscar was fifth,
Mexico Lando was second, Oscar was
eighth, Brazil Lando
was sixth, Oscar was eighth,
Vegas sixth, seventh
Qatar was
Lando was tenth and Oscar was on the podium
so different with Qatar but then
Abu Dhabi Lando was first, Oscar was tenth.
Oscar was still a young driver
but history has shown as he has struggled
at this point of the season before.
So is he actually a case of are we going
into some, we've said this how many times,
the example people love to raise
with this is Valtteri Bottas Russia.
Bottas was bloody untouchable
in Russia.
Lewis Hamilton couldn't get near him in Russia.
Are we in a situation where
actually we're in tracks that
doesn't quite favour, that's a possibility.
If you look at Perez
and his form I think it was in Baku.
Baku! It was almost
unbelievable! It was crazy!
So there are tracks that definitely
suit a driver and others that
you really have to work at across the weekend
and I just wonder do you think that being a sprint weekend
is actually in Piastri's favour
or will it work against him?
I think it could be in his favour
because it's simply
more time to get to grips with the car
in race spec and also you can
overthink things, whereas in a race
it's more difficult to do that because you're just racing.
So it could be in his favour.
The thing I always keep drawing
back to as well
is certainly if you read the comments
of this podcast there seems to be a thing
that because I've said
Lando's had the better of Oscar recently
that I've all of a sudden changed my mind on Oscar Piastri.
I want to make it as clear as anything
I still think Oscar Piastri will win
multiple world championships.
I still think Oscar Piastri is a really special driver.
My views on Oscar Piastri have not
changed at all, but
we do have a lot of formal
fans and this is wonderful, who are newish
to the sport, have only watched one year, two years, three years.
I think what we should say is we've seen
this before. Lewis Hamilton over
the course of his career has had
ups and downs, he's had patches where it just
hasn't worked and what we look
Oscar won races a handful of races
ago, there is also a point
of form, form goes up and down
and I just think we could sit here and
speculate whether it's particular types
of track surface, whether it's these tracks that
don't suit, whether there might be an underlying
issue with the car, I personally don't think there is
but who knows, I might be wrong long term
or it could be a simple case
of a driver just in a
sticky patch of form and if we could
if we could understand
sporting form and somebody
there was a sport scientist
who could say this is how to come out of bad form
they'd be in a lot of
they'd have a lot of money, they'd be paid off
the mortgage because they'd be in demand
for every single sport in the world, form
sometimes can't be explained, it's just
a little sticky patch, I think Oscar will
come out the other side of it, I do. How much
do you think this is a
mental thing for Oscar?
Do you think he's lost his confidence?
I asked Mark
where by that, we were on the grid
I can't remember exactly which race
maybe Singapore before it all went
Pete Jong and he
said no, it's just I'm more nervous
than he is, I'm feeling the pressure more
than he is and I
still believe that inherently
Oscar Piastri is
cool as a cucumber, he is
so calm
and he's getting frustrated
because the car isn't doing what he
wants it to do and what he's expecting
it to do but I still
even now don't believe
he's rattled, I don't believe
the pressure has got too much and is capitulated
to Lando Norris, I just believe
circumstances are worked against
him
and obviously
you have to say the C word at this point
don't worry, don't panic
conspiracy
the conspiracy theory
is still rife amongst fans
I get it on a daily basis of people
contacting me saying they've obviously
got it in for Piastri, that's a
British championship, it's British
team, they all want Lando
to win and that's what's going on behind
all of this, that's the booing that happened
last time at Mexico
which I thought was a bit rough
and shouldn't happen in our sport
and I'm disappointed
that it happened in Mexico which has always
been such a lovely
fun place to go
and they built up this head
of steam against Lando and
as F1 I think they should have spoken
out more and said look enough
don't boo
there we go
but I'm interested to know
how your fans and the fans
of the sport have reacted to this whole
conspiracy theory and how you
think that is having an impact
on the championship
Christian knows this more so than anybody
because they've been in his DMs
we've had Oscar on the podcast since
the start and he was the first thing
Oscar
was the first chat we ever recorded
he's a part of this podcast sort of growth
story and we've been lucky enough
thanks to the lovely people at McLean's
catch up with him on a regular basis as he's risen
as the podcast got older
and I think therefore a lot of people were shocked
when I said in Baku
actually I don't think it was a good weekend for Oscar
and to go back to your point
Jenny you said he doesn't appear rattled
I agree with you to me the only time he's been rattled
was that Baku weekend where
I thought he looked a bit rattled outside the car
and inside the car people really hated that
I said he came across as a bit of a spoiled teenager
he was grumpy on the radio
it was tonguing cheek
I was having a bit of a laugh as anybody
who listens to this podcast regularly
we don't take the sport seriously and we will not start taking the sport seriously
have a bit of a laugh it's only sport
but I stand by all those comments
it was not a great weekend for Oscar
but
the sudden drop off in form
we've not seen it for a while
but we have seen it in Formula One
as I've just said in my previous answer
so yes Jenny to answer your question
there's a lot of life and plentiful
and people who express opinions like me
have been very vociferous
another thing we get a lot at the moment
and there'll be people listening and watching this
being like oh I don't read the comments
I didn't know any of this it's not everybody
but another thing we get a lot is
because the three of us are British
on the podcast
so therefore we must be anti-Oscar
which I say you're not really paying attention to the podcast history
because it is on more frequently than Greg James
but
that because
certain people have come out and said it
in recent seasons
has got massively overplayed
me and Jenny are lucky enough
to be in the Paddock Affair bit
Jenny's got vastly more experience in the Paddock
than I am and I'd be interested to know
if you agree with me here Jenny
but the issue of nationality
in my opinion
in my experiences
of chatting to journalists
people who work in the sport
it doesn't come up because in Formula One
you're so used to
interacting with people
from other nationalities
there are Australian drivers
there are French team members
there are Italian team members
there are German drivers whatever
it just isn't a thing
and then when you do speak to
there are a lot of British journalists
because the sports got Britain throughout its history
but when you speak to those journalists
and you do get into
very few of them say the Brits
and even if they did say a Brits
not because they're British it's because they admire
something about their driving style
about their character, about their personality
the nationality thing I think is much bigger
for people who are outside of Formula One
and people who are in it
the British conspiracy don't go into the media room
and there is a bit where some of the British journalists
sit together but they're not all
cheering for the Brits
like I've said all season Betty
they just wanted to be good and entertaining
for business that's good for
we as people that want to work in the sport
want it to be a close title battle
that's all people want
I think the nationality thing gets
vastly overplayed
when it's British bias
I think you're looking for something that doesn't really exist
but all we want is it to be competitive
we just want to watch good racing
we want the sport to thrive
we don't care necessarily who wins
we just want it to be good
and entertaining Jenny
I do think there's a slight British bias
because as you've said
a lot of the people
in F1 are British
yes there's multinationals
represented from all corners of the world
and travelling circles
3-4 thousand people
but the language of choice
that everybody has to speak
is English
there are more journalists from the UK
than anywhere else
regardless of how many entrants they have
there are more British drivers than anyone else
and the way
that Sky broadcasts
which is to a lot of countries throughout the world
they are aware of that
but you have to say they are a British broadcaster
and Crofty does a wonderful job
as my computer is almost about to explode
with heat
and
Crofty does a great job
but as with any broadcaster
let's say you're watching football
and it's Gary Lineker
and Clive Tillsley
I'm mixing up all the different broadcasters
and you're listening to commentary of England
versus Switzerland
the commentator
is going to be more excited for an England goal
than they are for the opposition goal
not because it's a bad game
or that they're
it's just the way we're made
and if you listen to commentary in Brazil
the Brazilian journalist will be more excited
for a Brazilian goal
than they will if England score
as we're made
and the way that we represent the sport
so I'm not saying that Crofty will be more excited
because
Norris is won the championship
I think we're all better journalists and broadcasters
than that
but inherently there must be something within you
as a Brit
going
this is great, I want to see the best person
and if it happens to be Norris
maybe we should be excited for that
maybe that should be the best outcome as a Brit
I don't think there's anything wrong with that
as you said
I think I'd slightly disagree Jenny
again to use a commentator analogy
one of the most excitable commentaries I've seen
is Alex Jakes for Charlotte Clair winning the Monaco Grand Prix
Jakes he was just in his element
and that's not a British thing
so I'm not sure it's there as strongly
I don't see it as much as you do
but
but I think the fact that we have differing opinions on it
suggests maybe there is something that I don't know
but isn't that the whole Jakesy thing
with Monaco and Charlotte Clair
that was for the love of the sport
because we're all involved and invested in the sport
as the fans are too
but that's why I think it's stronger than nationality
so I agree with you on that side
but I do think
there is a sway towards
British
English nurse in the paddock
and I'd be more interested to hear
from the French broadcasters
or the Brazilian broadcasters about actually
how they feel this championship
being depicted and if they feel
this slight un
or disbalance
I'm asking lots of questions about it
because I don't want to just take
that
there's nothing there
because if enough people are saying it, maybe there is something there
but I'm too British to see it
I get what you're saying
and I think it is good to ask those questions
and sort of like see
try and see both sides of it
I don't know
anyone in the media
being more
biased towards Lando than Oscar
just because Lando's
a Brit but maybe that's me being naive
I certainly don't see it like that
if anything, I think a lot of people
support Oscar more
to be quite honest with me
see that's the thing, are we double checking ourselves
because we can't favour Norris
so we're all backing, I don't know
I don't really know what I feel about it
and also I can only speak for myself
I am looking enough to go to races
speak to drivers
my fan relationship with the sport is obviously
vastly different and people ask me all the time
who's your favourite driver
I don't have a favourite driver on track
I just don't, I don't look at the sport that way
I look at it and wanting it to be entertaining
therefore that's where
where I would be biased
is if we had had 15 max races
max race wins in a row
I would be actively in favour of max not winning the next Grand Prix
because I want entertainment
that's where I hold my hands up to my bias
but even during the Hamilton era
when he won everything
people were like
absolutely I wanted somebody else to win
100%
but I can go off like
I love talking to Alex Albon
who's tied because he's chaos
I love Oscar because he's the loveliest sweetest guy
I like Lando because I admire his principles
my reasons for liking these guys
or not liking these guys come to me
personally nothing to do with their
nationality
but you know, it's a fun topic
and one we will undoubtedly revisit
we are yet to interview a driver
who has not been very nice to us
we haven't met an angry
mean driver
so maybe when we do
then we won't favour them
can we talk about Max for Saffron though
because he, right, 36 points off the lead Jenny
do you think he could do it
what have we got, 4 races left
and 2 sprint races, is it possible
sprint weekends doesn't mean
which is a worry I think for McLaren
that he could sneak in there
and pull
a surprise come
Abu Dhabi, I wouldn't write him off
he has been, I used it in a column that I did
unstoppable
for the last few races
because he just seems in the form of his life
he's free
he feels very comfortable
he's in a good place in his relationship
everything is balanced it seems
and obviously it's easy to look from the outside
but
he doesn't have any pressure
or does he
with the sort of
5 world championships in a row
only one man's ever done that before
we all know who that is, the most successful driver around Brazil as well
so Max could do it
especially if it's raining, we've seen what he's like
in the rain in Intelargos
I think it's a long shot
but never write Max off
yeah, you can't write Max off
you can't
but it's
he's got a mountain to climb doesn't he
he really does, but if anyone can do it
it is Max, and that is it for part one
after the break we're going to talk about
Oli Bearman to Ferrari
surely not
the end of the season is getting so
incredibly close, the championship battle
has been
insane, we're all going to miss it
so much when that final race of the season comes around
aren't we
for a break at the end of the F1 season
but you just kind of don't want this one to end
do you?
with so little in it
but
the winter break is getting shorter and shorter
so
there's a saying we don't want this season to end
but 2026 will literally be here before we know it
I know I think you need a holiday
to be honest, I think we all need a holiday
but our sports fans, we're so fickle
aren't we, because instantly
there is going to be a whole load of
new storylines that we're just going to get carried away with
a whole load of new drivers that we're
going to get behind and say that they're going to win
the championship and there's also going to be
brand new cars for everyone to get used to as well
in 2026 and a whole
new flipping team joining the grid as well
there is so much drama
I just love it, I love it
so much drama
but that means now is actually a good time to start
plotting out which races you might want to
get to next season because with F1 only getting
bigger and better and more exciting
tickets for Grand Prix
they get snapped up so
fast and that Christian
Hugel is where our good friends at Gulliver's
come in, we've spoken about them a fair bit this season
but if you haven't heard of them
they're basically a cheat code for getting
you to your dream race weekend
and what's been so lovely
is the amount of you who've been in touch
saying you've used Gulliver's
and you've either gone or are going
to a Grand Prix, you guys
are actually getting in touch with Gulliver's
and it's absolutely brilliant, you guys
are telling us how brilliant they are
because as we all know by now, they just take
the faff out of all of the
logistics that come with
following F1 around the world and trust me
as someone that goes to a fair share of races
if I could pay someone
to take care of my travel
accommodation, getting me to and from the race
just letting me enjoy the racing
I would give them a blank check, take
all of my money, here is my debit card
because honestly it can be a nightmare, it's so
worth doing having Gulliver's just
sort it for you so you can enjoy
Formula One. Here is everything
take it all because you always get lost
as well don't you, so it would actually be really
helpful for you, it's also pretty mad
that you can get everything in one place
and Gulliver's have already started taking
bookings for the 2026
season everybody so you need to get on it already
if you head to Gulliver's travel.co.uk
you'll see packages for some of the most
iconic circuits on the calendar
like Silverstone, Monza,
Spa and also Monaco. Yeah
Gulliver's take care of everything and there's even
Gulliver's tour managers on hand at every race
like it can be daunting when you're at these tracks
a long way away from home in the middle
of a foreign country that you don't know
so having somebody just there to talk to is amazing
they make sure every detail
of the race weekend is taken care of

I don't know why but
I must be slightly out of the loop
a little bit because this bit of gossip
in the rumor mill completely
hit me round the head I had no idea
that this was a thing guys
but there's a lot of chat about
Oli Berman being lined up as a potential
successor to Lewis Hamilton
at Ferrari
where do you both stand on this Christian
Christian I'll come to you first because is this
an actual thing
well firstly is this the thing
yeah the rumors are a thing
for a start the rumors out
there that I've seen a lot of actually in the last week in particular
that Ferrari aren't looking
at beyond either 26
or 27 depending on which
one you read
to continue with Lewis Hamilton saying that
they'll make a break with Lewis either at the end of 2026
or the end of 2027 and they're saying
the successor
is Berman so why are they saying that
well firstly Oli Berman is a
Ferrari junior driver every time I spoke
to him last season he was wearing his Ferrari
kit he's been
sent out to Haas because Haas have an extremely
close relationship with Ferrari
Oli's had a good run of form
as we spoke about at length in the debrief
last time out Betty
that's why you're seeing it
in terms of my take
on the validity of these
rumors it's far too early
to tell I do not believe that either
Ferrari or Lewis Hamilton
are in any way
sure of what they will do at the end of 2026
or the end of 2027 because it entirely
depends on the end of 2026
if Lewis has a wonderful 2026
and is right up there with Charles
adds on track
performance into what you get from him
off track in development and this is a team
that needs direction would they get
red of Lewis Hamilton no they wouldn't
if Lewis Hamilton had a bad
2026 or a bad 2027
Oli Berman
would be right up there
with the list of drivers
they would look at because he
is a Ferrari junior
so do I see it happening
in the future potentially yes I do
are the rumors true
no not at this stage because
they're predicting something that I don't think
Ferrari or Hamilton know themselves
do you have a different take to me
what do you think of my rambling analysis
very good
so as soon as Berman
got the call up to replace Carlos
Sainz last year for round 2
which was Saudi Arabia
Carlos had appendicitis as you might remember
and Berman qualified 11th
and was P7
in the race obviously
the Ferrari was a better car
last year but P7
in your first F1 race
Ferrari wearing
that
and all the responsibility that goes with that
that's a tricky track as well Jenny
that's a very tricky track
so it was a massive thing for him
to have done and that enabled him
to get the half drive this year
you're only as good
as your last maybe four races
Berman has had
four very good races
where other people have not
so he's shining
at the moment and whether it's
coming from him
his agent his management team
whether it's coming from
Italian media I don't know the sources
directly but there are whispers
and it's in Ollie's interest
for their 2B whispers
linking him to that for our receipt because he has
hot property at the moment
if has come out with a car that
is wholly awful next year
because we don't know
what the pecking order will be
he won't be the talk of the town anymore
he won't be scoring
point scoring double in a weekend
and we arrange those words
don't make sense
so his opportunity is now
to get that buzz going
on a year where Lewis Hamilton
has struggled both emotionally
physically being able to drive
the car everything
if you go back to Budapest
I've not seen him looking that low
speaking to us as media
for years
so if the car
doesn't perform well next year
and Ferrari create another dog
which is possible
Ferrari create a dog is a lovely quote
but
it's happened before
will Lewis stick around for the whole year
I don't know
I don't know
stick around
are you staying retiring
or going somewhere else
did you at any point this year
Christian Orbetty think
for one moment one little inkling
after Budapest
that he would walk
because 26 being on the horizon
no I didn't
but the answer to my question
gives credence to your theory
because the new era is in the horizon
for 26 and you're saying
if it's a disaster mid-season
tell you what Jenny
I don't want it to be true
none of us do of course we don't
but yes strange of things
I can't sit here and say now it's preposterous
it won't happen I've never thought of that
if you're Ferrari
sorry
if you're Ferrari and looking around
just in case something
happened with Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerre
you never know which one is going to throw
their toys out the pram first
then you would be crazy
not to look at your roster of talent
and look at
you with the next cabs on the rank
and Arthur Leclerre
obviously Charles's brother
has he really got enough to come to F1
I'm not so sure
there have been so many people that have been
Ferrari juniors and missed out
being F1 drivers
if you look at Schwartzman
they're a whole host
Bearman is the next one in line
so
and also Jenny
I'd never thought of it
if you sit here and say that's a ridiculous theory
I love the spice
I very much enjoy that
let's take it less spicy
please
if either Hamilton or Leclerre got Covid
or was ill
or fell down the stairs
or took all the yogurt off the shelf and injured themselves
Bearman would be the first person who would get the replacement
like when
when Mercedes borrowed Williams from
no
Mercedes borrowed Russell from Williams
that would be the same thing
that if Lewis Hamilton
had to miss this weekend
they'd be knocking on Io come out to his door
and Hass would say yes they'd have to
so that relationship's there
and if Olly keeps driving the way he's driven
Betty
I was having a chat about Olly
to a few people in the paddock in Austin
I think the
story of Bearman's season was
there's always been the speed but there was lots of
silly mistakes
in the middle of the season
one example I think I've raised on the pod before
is crashing on the pit entrance in Silverstone
like there was
it was a very rookie season somebody said to me once
Olly's having a very rookie season
someone said to me
what we're seeing in this second and this back
end of the season is the rookiness disappearing
a little bit and the speed remains
now what we were saying about Oscar
form fluctuates we shouldn't get carried away
Olly might have a dip
but if Olly continues this
inter next season and be at the end of this season
and inter next season
this chat will get stronger
and stronger
and he's got a really good barometer next to him in Ocon
Esteban is a damn good
Formula 1 driver
he's a very solid Formula 1 driver
but he's not ever been picked up
by Mercedes when they've had the option
right so judge that what you will
so if Olly comes out and beats
Ocon next season
in season 2 that is when you are going
to start Ferrari are going to be starting to think
hmm interesting as are
people away from
Ferrari thinking
I might do a pastry with Alpine
here actually if I'm struggling
can I nick him from another team
don't know who that team would be
but yeah if Olly carries on the way
he's going to be in the shot window and Ferrari have got
the priority
you would suggest there
just quickly Jenny do you think Olly
Bearman has what it takes to win
a championship one day
who knows
I didn't think Oscar Piastri did when he first came in
even though he was lauded
I'm not sure I've seen Kimi Antonelli
as good as everyone makes out that he could be
it does
these cars are tricky
as we've seen Lewis Hamilton can't get to grips
with this evolution of car
we know he's a multiple champion
but he can't drive these cars
so it depends will next year's cars
be easier to drive
but I
think you can't really
tell until it's all
shaken out
and a driver you think is going to be
amazing so talented
if they don't get that pattern
of winning the momentum
the confidence in the car which is key
the team believing in them
then they might be the best driver
ever but they won't get that chance
to win multiple world champions
so it really depends
if it's given the right car at the right time
and we always have this conversation
it's just
depending on that, look at Fernando Lanzo
brilliant, brilliant driver
wrong car, wrong time
he's happening
that is pretty true
we talk so much about
2026 and we've been talking about
2026 for the last three years
I cannot wait for 2026
to roll round and actually
see if it's worth it
is that okay?
I'm excited for it
but I would just like a break first
I'm a bit in fear of it
are you?
because this year I thought this is going to be epic
and actually it has turned into a battle
three drivers
could win it and we haven't seen that since
2012 so for me it's
kind of yes but it's been
very slow to get to this point
and I thought there'd be five drivers
fighting for the title this year
and I want that
I don't care about anything else
I just want to see a good
handful of drivers from different teams
of different nationalities
battling with amazing races
every weekend
and I'm just fearful that these cars
aren't going to give us that
Jenny don't say that
we don't need that negative
I'm putting all my positivity into 2026

welcome back everybody
and a big welcome to
Formula 2 commentator Chris McCarthy
Chris welcome to the fast and the curious
how's things
had a good morning because everyone on this podcast
seems to have had a shambles of a morning
been very good thanks so much for having me on
a fan of the show so it's
it's a pleasure to be here thank you
thank you very much for having me on the show
excellent well we're going to talk about F2
and obviously F1 with you in a moment
but firstly you've managed
to get Crofty a host of talented
young drivers the celebrity
chef Tom Kerridge our old mate
Chloe Grant and Formula 1's
tallest commentator ever
Harry Benjamin into the same room
in built-in teens this month
he's a big man
long gentleman Benjamin
long man
long gentleman
why have you done this what was
happening talk to us about it
yeah I mean purple sectors
was a event that really
started for me a couple of years ago
now I you know I
was diagnosed with epilepsy when I
was 17 years old and
I didn't really open up about it too much
at the time I think a lot of people
when they they get epilepsy there
you know you know they're
embarrassed to speak about it they hide
from it and that was something I did when I
when I got it it wasn't and
wasn't until a couple of years ago really that I
was brave enough to go around the paddock
with a with a t-shirt on that
really showed that I had had
epilepsy and when I put pictures
out about that that the paddock
really warned me and I started to get into
conversations and realized that people
very near to me were suffering
with similar things or had connections
to epilepsy in similar ways so
off the back of that I approached the
young epilepsy charity and
came up with this idea that why
don't we give you know people with
epilepsy who cannot race ultimately
I used to race myself and when I got
diagnosed that I lost my race license
haven't been able to race since but
why don't we give people with epilepsy
a chance to race their heroes
a chance to become racing drivers
through SIM racing put them in the same
room as people like Chloe Grant
professional racing drivers
the people they listen to like people
like Harry Benjamin in the same room
and go racing for an evening
and that's what we did last year
with the first event and this year
thanks to Neil Cohen to Jenny Gao
we've expanded that project
and we've bought some big
guests in for Purple Sectors
too and made some initiatives off the
back of it so it's been
more successful than I could ever imagine
and we're only in year two so
yeah it's been really good
to see and it's creating I think a
bit of a community within the paddock
That's amazing Jenny why did you want to be
part of this? Well firstly Chris
is amazing and he's very
good at what he does and very good at
telling a story which is bizarre really
because as a commentator you don't do that at all
I suppose racing's loss
again as a community of commentators
broadcasters and journalists
because Chris is greater what he does
so I
my daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy
last Mother's Day
so last year
and it was a bit of a shock to
the system she has absences
so her seizures
aren't like the shaking ones
that are I suppose
most recognisable
she just goes away for some time
could be up to
few minutes could be seconds
so we're trying to
navigate this new life
I've met lots of people
who are Mums and Dads
of people who have epilepsy
children
it is very much a life changing
illness if you have it
and you have it for the rest of your life
a lot of children do grow out of it
but I just wanted to do
as much as I could to raise awareness
because Chris is right
it's another one of those things that
we don't talk about
we're scared to talk about it
and the more we are aware of it
the symptoms
what we can look out for
how we can help, how we can aid
how we can mentor
young people who have got epilepsy
to have a better life
to make the best of their life
then the more we can do
the better I think
because guys it's something
we like to speak
about the stuff that people don't speak
about on this podcast
and I think weirdly
sports sometimes
falls a little bit behind society
sometimes some of the taboos
in society still end up being taboos
in sports
a little bit later on
so it's why we always talk about
whether it's getting women involved in motorsport
whether it's LGBT stuff all the stuff we talk about
on this podcast
Chris obviously you've always had a passion
for motorsport
you've raced yourself as you say
were you worried
that your epilepsy
we know it unfortunately stopped your racing
but were you worried it would have a wider impact
on just your motorsport involvement full stop
a little bit
obviously getting around the country
when you can't drive is a little bit difficult
but in all honesty it's actually become
quite a positive thing
it forced me to have to meet people
within the paddock
I found myself in going to tracks
I remember the first time I did
Formula Rena Eurocup I arrived at Hockenheim
with absolutely no idea
how I was going to get to the hotel
then how I was going to get back
and then how I was going to get back to the airport
but then that forced me to meet a load of people
so I've become quite a good passenger
for people
and I've often had to see people with racing jackets
getting on flights and go up to them
and then face track
and then ask them for a lift
and buy them a coffee for the pleasure of it
so to be honest
it's forced me to become a little bit more confident
I think in the paddock
and I've tried to turn it into a positive
and that's what I think through this event
myself, Jenny and Neil we're trying to do
we're trying to include people
and show them that they should
become involved in the sport
they shouldn't let this hold them back
because yes we do have
epilepsy but it has never helped me back
and actually all the people
that when I've opened up
to the people that I've worked for
they've only gone out of their way to help me
get around it so I did worry
about it a lot and that's why I never spoke about it
but the more I opened up about it
the more help I got actually
Chris you also mentor quite a lot
of young people as well don't you
you sort of try and help them
can you talk to us a little bit about that
why do you do that I guess
things with purple sectors
we did this year when I
went to Jenny and to Neil
we decided we wanted to take the event
a little further than just having
people with epilepsy race at the event
which was something we did last year
something that we're going to do again this year
but we
Young Epilepsy has a great program
called the Youth Voice Network where they
help a lot of young people
through their epilepsy
and help them deal with it
so we went to
the Youth Voice Network
and gave them this opportunity
all the members on it to
become part of the broadcast team
for purple sectors
this year
and after some
after quite a few applications we took
five people to Silverstone
to the Silverstone 500
race a British GT race and we took them
around Jenny
took them into Hayfish's truck
we got to see a broadcast live
we took them into
Kian Giuse the GT driver
who eventually won the championship
they sat in his car which was really cool
and then we took them to
the British Cart Championships as well
where they got to have a little go on
pushing the buttons for Alpha Live
who were broadcasting the event
and this year well next week
they're going to be helping us broadcast
purple sectors to live so it's going to be
a really cool experience for them
to be broadcasting on the CV for them
and hopefully then something they can take on
to try and go and work in the industry
that's brilliant Chris because you're providing people
with opportunities which I think all of us
me, Chris, Jenny, Betty, we all know
unless someone gives you a go at something
at some point you don't start
we've all got somebody to be grateful for
so that's massive and you'll be in that person
for so many people Chris
and also Jenny
I think you all relate to it
so many people who listen to this podcast
and watch this podcast will relate to it
the fact that if you're different
whether you've got epilepsy
whether you've got a
learning difficulty
whether you're gay, whether you're a woman sometimes
in sport, there is that worry, that feeling
that because I'm different this is going to stop me
and I suppose talking about it in lieu of
events like this
helps get rid of stigmas
and realise you can be involved in sport
in our case motorsport no matter who the hell you are
exactly and as the
diversification of F1 fans
continues to grow
there are more people coming to this sport
younger people, different people
people that we want to
not only open the door to
we want to blow the door off
and say whoever you are
I don't care if you're young, old, black
it doesn't make a difference
this sport is inclusive
and this society is one that will support you
it's not about booing someone
it's about cheering for someone
lifting them up and hoping that they can
go on and be even
better than you are
so I am a thoroughly
believer
or I thoroughly believe in
mentoring, ambassadorships
leaving
a gap open for someone else
to explore what they
can bring to this sport
and it doesn't matter
who you are you will always
have something different to bring
which will be of benefit to someone
absolutely and right Chris
you mentioned purple sectors too
we know it's in Milton Keynes it's November the 11th
if people are listening to this
we've got people listening to this all around the world
Milton Keynes is a bit of a track
and I'm sure they'll send their apologies
but if you are fairly close to Milton Keynes
on November the 11th and people think this is something I'd like to go to
or even just get involved in
Chris what are the details where can people go
it's going to be live broadcast
on Alpha Live's YouTube channel
he's already up for that so do go
and check out the YouTube channel
and you can already see that we've got the live stream link
up there ready to go
we're going to be actually broadcasting
not just that but a content creator race
as well which will be filmed a little bit earlier
in the day so you might see some familiar
faces in that
and yeah and then we've got
our Instagram page as well
at setting purple sectors which has
links to our raffle prizes
as well so if you can't be there then
we've got some great auctions, some great raffles
Jenny's done some fantastic
work around the paddock when she's been off to the F1 events
we've got stuff from Mercedes
she's a hustler
she'll enict it Chris
she'll enict it
she'll have been around the back with the in-liner
having it she will
they're going to see it goes missing
what they don't know won't hurt them
exactly
exactly
have a look you might
see some of it yourself
but there's some really great stuff
on there
we've got stuff coming in from Paul Oz as well
which looks really cool so
have one of these up for grabs as well
I don't know if it's
any worth about
Jenny is that how to read F1 available still in all good bookshops
by JennyGal
I actually believe it is
Christmas so you know all about
books Christian
I do
perfect Christmas gift for a Formula 1 fan
that's how to read F1 by JennyGal

I could do I would say it's the perfect raffle prize as well
because it's going to be a great event
and there's something for everyone
when it comes to raffles and auctions
and if you just want to get involved
send us messages on the night
support us
because I think the more we talk about it
as Chris says
the better it will be for everyone
and it will be such a fun event
so if you can't be there with
Harry and Crofty going head to head
in the commentator's buffer with Chris
then you can join us online
Excellent
that sounds wonderful if people are wondering
why the right honourable Betty Glover
has left us and is being quiet
it's not that she doesn't support the event
she's very passionate about it but she's struggling with internet issues
so I'm holding the thought
Chris while we've got you here
we need to talk about F3 and F2
F3's done for 2025
well Kamara taking the crown
but we've got two more rounds of Formula 2
in Vegas and Abu Dhabi
you are the commentator, you are the oracle of this
so I'd like to know who's going to win
and who we should be excited about
and if these predictions aren't right
we'll be holding you personally responsible
so yeah, who's going to win Chris?
I'm seeing Jack Crawford in a week
so it'd be awkward if I didn't say him
Leo Fornaroli
Jack Crawford
it looks like it's going between them
and Chase as well
I think the next round is going to be key
Jack Crawford is going to have the
advantage there as he's raced there before
Leo Fornaroli hasn't
and then they've both got track experience
at Abu Dhabi, it really is hard to put
a name on one driver
because the championship leaves changed
I think with every single race
but Fornaroli has just looked
he won the championship in F3
last year and he is making
absolutely no mistakes at the moment
so it looks like he just has the edge
but track advantage might give
Jack Crawford a chance to
sneak into the lead or at least draw level
going into the final round
I think he's going to go to the last race
in all honesty, I'm really excited about it
Chris, just briefly, Alfred Limblad
is the name that we keep hearing a lot
keeps being linked with Red Bull
there is a common belief
that he is ready for F1
and will be the sort of the next to take the step
would you go along with that
are you impressed by him?
Absolutely, he's
been a rookie this season
he's held his own very well
for campus racing, we saw him
win at Barcelona earlier in the year
I think what people need to remember
he accelerated through the ranks
really quickly, he was only
in F4 a couple of years ago
went straight into F3
did very well, got a famous
double win at Silverstone
won four races that season
tied for the record in that year
and then went straight into F2
it's been a very quick process that Red Bull
have put him through to be ready
for this opportunity
it looks like he's going to jump straight in
and will be ready to go
so I'm excited to see what Alfred Limblad
can do, been mentored
all the way through by Olly Rowland
since he was about seven years old
which will be a nice thing for Olly Rowland
to Formula E world champion
of course to see him go through
Chris we will continue to keep an eye on him
Betty, we have you back
I believe, Betty, come in Betty Glover
Hello, I am here, Chris, sorry
I've just missed all of your magic
basically, you basically
you joined the podcast
and my internet went f*** this, she's out
No worries, I won't take it personally
Betty's internet got a finger
against Christopher Carthy, is that right?
I know, I know, he wouldn't believe what he said
he absolutely dropped a
oh yeah, he did it
was it gold dust
but Betty, we're at the point
where we usually ask at this point to the podcast
about the Brazilian Grand Prix
last year
we had a lot of rain, like we're looking like this year
Max Verstappen rose from 17th
Betty would you like to
read what you've written in the script
because I particularly enjoy it?
Max Verstappen cruised from 17th to victory
like a swan on a lake
a lovely Dutch swan
he was like a swan though, wasn't he?
he was like a swan
but weather we're expecting to be
sort of similar, maybe not as bad
but I mean, has anyone checked it recently?
shall I check it?
you do live weather
Jenny, regardless of wet or dry
Brazil's a cracking track, right?
overtaking possible
Brazil usually good fun
so good, I love it
interlagos between two lakes
that's what it actually means
and I think it could be in between
two lakes, physically as well as
spiritually
because it's going to rain a lot on Saturday
so we could have a repetition
of last year where the
qualifying had to take place
delayed on the morning
of the race day
but obviously it's a sprint weekend
oh yes, it was chaos
and they started the race early
and even then they didn't start it early enough
so it got rain delayed, it got red flagged
there'll always be some sort of
safety car red flag issue
on the race day in Brazil
but actually Sunday's looking okay
looking dry for now
so, and I like
your analogy of a swan but to me
if you've played Mario Kart
it was like you suddenly got the bullet
and suddenly you were from the back
to the front in one click of
a steering wheel so he
was so dynamic and I wouldn't
be surprised if he did the same again
Chris, what's this track like?
Explain it to us and who do you think
will thrive on a track like this?
I've been super impressed with the rookies
they've done very well haven't they?
Isaac Hajar is doing so well this season
and I can see a big result
coming from someone like him
this weekend, he's got that opportunity
the rumours of him maybe jumping up
so yeah, I think we're going to see
a big result from one of the rookies
Oli Bearman is obviously in good form
at the moment currently
but yeah, this is always
a track that produces
one of those surprise results
one of the smaller teams sort of jumping up
and getting either like a top 5 finish
or a podium but
I'm going to stick with Isaac for this one
and say he's going to produce a big result
this weekend maybe get a top 5 finish
or something like that
Let's do top 3 then
predictions from everyone, Christian?
No, come back to me
I'm going to be boring though
I think Max will win this weekend
Jenny, I feel like you probably agree
with the max prediction there
I feel like a max clean sweep
again with pole
sprint race and the win
which will shake things up again
in the championship
because there's a lot of points up
for Crambs this weekend
I think Norris
second
and I think we're going to get an outlier
for this weekend
and I think we're going to get an outlier
in third place, someone really
random so I am going
to go for
let's just blow it
wide open, Sonoda
Oh I'd love that
I'd be so happy
little Yuki on the podium, it'd be
joyous wouldn't it?
I know last year two Alpenes were on the podium
so never write anyone off
No Oscar
on your podium there Jenny
I mean obviously
huge bias
it's nothing personal
I'm just not convinced
right now, he's in the better mind
I would love it, I would love it
if he was able to turn things around
and really fight for this championship
because he deserves it
he deserves to be able to fight there
but I'm not convinced yet
I've said passionately
in this podcast that I don't think
British bias is a thing and I'm going to stick with that
I think Hamilton Russell Berman
Love it
It doesn't think there's no British bias here
Hamilton Russell Berman
No Lando
No George
I'm just going to mix it up
I'm going to say Oscar's going to have this mad comeback
he's going to get P1
then it's going to be Max and then it's going to be Lando
Oh spicy
Guys thank you so much
