LIVE
This is a professional radio, gentlemen.
And it's front wheel drive.
Have you got anyone you want to thank?
Just myself.
And now we'll do the after hours.
General, what would you go for?
They see us in there.
Because it's not a super car.
It is.
It's not.
Ordinary perfection comes in the form of two letters, A and U.
Long live my LTD.
Welcome to Car Talk at Shoe Zenon.
It's me, Matty J, online with Mr David Prince, Edward Bunting, Jim Barlow and Mr Scotty Doe Johnson.
How are you gentlemen?
Very well, thank you.
Hello, everyone.
Good to see you guys.
David Prince, Mr David Prince himself is back on Aussie soil.
How was your trip, my friend?
Land of Australia.
Australia.
Australia.
It was great, thank you.
You had a fantastic time catching up with the fam and our Scottish contingent,
our Scottish arm, Sean and Emily Rory.
So that was brilliant.
Had a great time.
Went very quickly, of course, while you were there.
But good to be home.
Good to be up to some warm weather.
It was a little chilly over there.
But that's an occupational hazard of going there in the middle of winter, isn't it?
So we have no one else to blame but ourselves.
But we were in the air last week when you did your last podcast.
So that was a little bit tricky to actually phone in then.
Sorry, I could have seen you and you and the pilots responding to, you know.
In my car update, I'm flying an A380 currently.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
There you go.
You could have done those things, David Prince.
You always hoping, you know, or you're hoping you don't get the announcement over the intercom.
Can someone fly a plane?
Is there anyone on here that can fly a plane?
But if I was with you, I'd be very happy about that.
I tell you what, it's a shame to be on my trip back.
I'll hold this up.
I bought this book to read.
I saw it in a shop.
It's called Super Veloce.
And it's subtitled, How Italian Cars Conquered the World.
Did they conquer the world today?
I thought that's a special statement in itself.
I think that doesn't need to read.
And what have you found out so far about these Italian cars?
Well, it's actually really interesting.
It's a lot about the 20s and 30s.
And a lot of the people, a lot of the names that are chronicled in the stories are quite famous names, you know, that went on to become, there's a fellow called Lancia.
There's Pin and Farina actually.
They talk about Pin and Farina.
Interestingly, Farina was the surname and Pin in, the Pin in part is Italian for something like smallest or youngest, the youngest of seven kids.
So his nickname was Pin in.
So that's how it became Pin in Farina.
Oh, cool.
Yeah, so there's lots of little bits and pieces about that, but a lot about the Agnelli family and how fear it was formed and how they, the different successes in very early Formula One and how that sort of waxed and waned.
And I'm actually just up to the part where a young Enzo Ferrari, you know, who was working for out driving, I think for Alfa Romeo.
Alfa Romeo, yeah.
It's a little easy chapters to read, which suits me down to the ground.
It's very digestible.
It's quite digestible. Yes.
So the subtitle had, had, had piqued my interest.
So I thought I'll grab to read on the plane.
Yes.
But that's good.
Got home all the cars started.
Absolutely filthy after all the ash and sitting out all that time.
But that was easy, easily fixed.
So yeah, no good to be back.
Thank you.
Welcome back.
Good to have you back.
Let's do some car updates, gentlemen.
We are also actually just joined by Rob.
Rob's making his way in.
He's somewhere in the interwebs.
There he is.
Hey, Rob.
How are you?
Thank you.
How's everyone going?
Very well, Rob.
I just wanted to say before we start, you've just reminded me.
I had a customer come in last week at Super Cheap and he was after like, he was in like a mad rush.
He seemed like he was, you know, just like, oh, I'm going to do this.
I'm going to ask him for some seat covers.
And I'm like, oh, yeah, you know, what are they going on?
He's like, oh, they're going on a, on a Ford, what do you say?
A Ford Fusion.
I'm like, what?
Like a, like I'm on day.
Like, because that's what it is in America.
He's like, yes, it's an American, it's a lift and drop car.
I'm filming, I'm filming a movie.
And I'm like, this wouldn't be the one with Gerard Butler, by any chance, would it be?
He's like, yes.
And I'm like, is my friend's van this one?
And I showed him your van.
And he's like, oh, yes.
He's like, he's driving around with that with the bloody all the sign, the sign
written.
So he, so he knew your van.
Oh, there you go.
Small world.
Michael was it?
Yeah.
I think that's his name.
Yeah.
And he was like the, you know, he was the, the car kind of doer for that.
So the reason why he, he bought these seat covers, I kind of upsold him.
I'm like, well, it's a movie.
I'll, I'll, I'll sell you.
So I upsold him on the, the leather look because it's, you know, it'll also know
the, the cloth, but like the hardened cloth because he's like, I need to see
covers because there's glass.
The car has just been very common as T bone glass all over the seats.
And we don't want Gerard Butler's butt to split in with all glass.
I'm like, he's like, they're only going to be used once and thrown away.
I'm like, okay, well, take these ones.
So thought you might like that connection.
Rob, I made a, I made a connection with you there.
My friend.
Awesome.
There you go.
There you can see your seat covers in the movie.
Yeah.
I was going to say, I saw those.
So I saw those exact there.
It's so random.
Yeah.
Man, he's been used in this film.
Yeah.
So they hide it for four days.
The transit.
The transit.
I'm surprised it made it to be fair.
Look, it's, it's all good.
It's all been fixed.
The steering rack's been done.
They changed the diff and the twice and they changed the wheel bearings and they've.
I was going to say the sound techs probably might have sent it back to you and said,
no, the diff's a bit noisy, man.
We can't get the boom microphone to work in here.
Now with the barrier in there and the radio up, you can barely hear the diff now.
Oh yeah.
Okay.
Here we go.
How did this come about?
Like how did someone find your van out of all the vans?
I was hiring the car out for a little while because I wasn't using it in Turo.
It's a car share app.
And he picked it up through the car share app.
So I hired it out for the first movie, which it was, and it's been released.
It's called all her fault.
And it's got it like a, a, a millisecond snippet in the, in the clip.
And they paid me, I don't know, I think five or $600 on that one.
That's pretty good.
For four days.
You'll take that.
And they picked it up, towed it to the, the movie set.
Um, they'll not tell you to put it on a trade track.
And then they, um, drive up the driveway for that 30 sec, not even 30 second clip.
And then brought it back.
There you go.
So, and I took it off Turo because the car was breaking down and all that stuff all the time.
So, um, but he still remembered me.
So he called me, he goes, Hey, is your car still available?
We need it for this movie.
Okay.
Yeah.
Sure.
Yeah.
No problems.
And so I've said, oh, by the way, I've got a Mercedes and a 30 just like any car.
That's awesome.
Love it.
Um, so what did you say the, the name of the first movie was?
Oh, well, you better not say that too loud.
Um, let's, uh, we married man's favorite film.
Oh, it's got a lot of, it starts off real slow.
It's eight, an eight part series or whatever you want to call it.
Okay.
Yeah.
Mini series.
And, um, it's about a lady dropping off her kid at a, one of the mother's houses from
school.
Um, but the kid goes missing.
All right.
No balls from there.
I thought it was going to be the guy says, this is all your fault.
And then, uh, the scene is the van moving all his things out of the house.
The husband was the wife for the whole short series that one.
But at the end you find out, I won't, no, I won't, I won't, you have to,
you have to watch your late all slow episodes.
It minds in the fourth, I think episode.
All right.
Okay.
So, you know, it's possible to the fourth episode, just see where your van is.
Oh, there's Rob's van.
Yeah.
But this one, they've got a big sunlight dish on it.
They put some roller, um, some not roller roof racks, um, some rhino roof racks on it.
Um, and he said, you can keep those.
They're about like five or 600 bucks a set.
I said, I'll take that.
So yeah, it's good.
There you go.
There you go.
Just thought I would, uh, would say that we, we know we've got a mutual friend.
Rob, there you go.
So yes.
Yes.
Um, we're affiliated with the movie industry now.
Oh man.
You know, me and my super cheap connections, you know, I'm just, I'm, I'm so the
C covers I sat on.
So the, the C covers I sold have Gerard Butler's spot sweat on them.
So, so.
Can I have them back after you finish?
Yeah.
You're out to sign.
Sign here, please.
Yeah.
Butler.
Butler.
Butler.
Butler.
Butler.
Very good.
Very, very good.
Let's get into some car updates.
We'll start, we'll start with you, Rob.
Updates with you.
So obviously, obviously your van is a, is a movie star.
Yeah.
So the, the van's a movie star, a booked, um, big swapping cars around and driving cars,
just getting involved.
The battery's gone flat on the XR six.
Harley's taking his, uh, Amrock in for the head, head unit to be displayed, uh, changed
because it, it seizes up and HVAC doesn't work and all that sort of stuff on the Amrock.
Then I'm taking his C 63 in for a service tomorrow.
Just you're swapping cars around, cleaning the cars up, nothing major on any of the cars.
Yeah.
So cars went to a car show on Sunday.
Which one?
Took the Mustang.
The one at Pescoval was, um, at the cricket club.
I can't remember the name of it.
It's something Pescoval, a rod and bike show.
Okay.
And, um, it was a big turnout.
A lot of cars, some nice cars too.
So the entry was $30.
My mate Charlie with his GT Shelby replica, um, won the, the best modern car at show.
Um, so they'll, they'll fire us in the Mustang group that went and displayed our cars.
So that was good.
Um, beautiful day Sunday sitting there and just, um, underneath a tree watching people
go by and asking questions, you know, about the cars and whatnot.
So a lot of interest even, you know, that they mustangs, but there's still a lot of interest.
It's amazing.
Yeah.
So the Mustang needs a service as well.
So that I'll book that in tomorrow as well.
SEC, no progress on that one.
Chancellor here to defend him this time.
Yeah.
Well, anyway, that, that's something I need to talk to him about when he comes back from
his holidays.
I drove the E 30 last week, took that for a spin, but it didn't drive the 300 SC.
I haven't driven that for a couple of months now.
So I need to get that going as well.
Yeah.
So that's, that's pretty much it with the cars.
Lovely.
Very good.
Drags are good on the weekend.
Um, on Friday night.
Yeah.
We'll talk about the drag shortly.
Uh, uh, Rob, Scotty, though.
Um, a couple of things.
I finally service the blade.
So I did that oil change and filter nice and easy to do.
Before you continue, Jim, I think it's got a question.
Did you watch?
Oh, sorry.
I guess did you watch the blade?
No, I still haven't.
It's good.
He's just going to ask that question every week now, right?
It does need a wash.
Um, had the mechanic come around on Sunday to take a look at a couple of things with
the handbrake and all that.
I found out where that metal, there was a metal noise that kept happening that I'd hear
inside the cabin.
So I removed the center console piece and you can see where the handbrake cable is and
there's a bracket and it's all loose.
So it was sitting there and banging.
So we're like, oh, cool.
You know, we can tighten it from the wheel.
So we go back and take the wheel off ready to do it properly.
And there's nothing there.
The handbrake cable is just zip tied up.
Oh dear.
Um, so there's no bracket or anything with these aftermarket brakes to attach the
handbrake or anything for it, which isn't really massive drama because I've got the
stock brakes anyway.
So I'll just wear out these pads that are on this one and then I can just swap the
rears over to the stock ones and get a handbrake back again.
So I mean, I've had it for a while now without a handbrake a little bit longer.
It's not going to do anything.
Can't get cruise control to work on it.
That's not good for Japanese Scotty.
Pardon?
That's unusual being Japanese.
Why would that not work?
Yeah, I mean, you can do it on the series ones.
You can do it on the blades that come with the 2.4 leader in it, but for some reason
the series two, I don't know.
It's missing something, maybe a module or it's missing something.
Why doesn't the cruise just work?
Why is it missing something?
It doesn't have one.
It doesn't have cruise.
No, it was an optional extra in series twos.
Oh, right.
Wow.
Yeah.
And the way that a lot of people do it is there's a pin in the ECU and all you do is
get a wire and run it into the Fox Spring and then you buy the, obviously the clues,
the clues, the cruise control stalk, hook that up, plug it in, boom,
bodge your uncle and it works.
Mine, when I have a look at the ECU, I've already got a wire going into that pin.
So it's already taken up and then I go and have a look under the dash.
I'm like, okay, everything seems fine.
Hook it up.
Nothing.
He hooked up.
He's computed to it and there's no mention of cruise control or anything on there as
a module.
There's nothing coming up.
There's no fuses whatsoever for it.
We searched everything, searched through the books.
It doesn't even have a fuse.
Nothing listed for it.
So went, okay, that's a bugger.
Needs a new front brake pads.
I put the order in for those and it's another wait time on those ones too.
About one and a half months.
Yeah, they've got to be made.
Oh my God.
Which is odd because these brake pads aren't specific.
They're not specific for the blade.
They're just part of the brand endless.
So it's just for their four-pot brake system, which you can buy for like Subaru Liberties
and things like that.
They use the same brake upgrade system and I don't know, can't get them.
They're all saying that there's a bit of a delay on those ones.
So they asked me, did I want to go ahead?
I was like, yeah, I don't really have any other options.
So I'll have to wait about one and a half months on those
and slowly bed them in because I just wanted to get to sit right
because I don't want to get new rotors or anything at the moment.
There's no lip or anything on the rotors.
Just the front rotors have got, what would you call it?
I called it the right name last time.
I can't remember what it is now.
Just some marks, some little dots, the marks and stuff on them.
Might be worth getting a machine or something, sorry.
I'm not sure if they have a machine in them that well.
They're cross drilled.
No, not cross drilled.
They're slotted.
It's still a skim the surface.
If they're using the lathe, not the actual brake machine,
but what they often do is they put them on the same machine
that they do for flywheels and they give them a light skim.
So that is a possibility.
Just do it myself.
Pitting, that's the word.
Thank you, Rob.
Pitting.
Yes, that's the word I was using last time.
The proper scientific word.
Yeah, it's got a bit of that in there.
It still stops fine.
To get new ones of those is going to cost me quite a bit.
Those are a lot cheaper.
And yeah, as I said, there's no lip on it,
so it's still got a bit of life left into it.
I assume it's just been sitting around
and it's just started to pit from the ocean.
Maybe snow.
God knows where it's been sitting.
I can see underneath there's some of the screws
that have got a bit of surface rust and stuff on them
that we don't get here.
So you just kind of notice that now.
I can't remember.
Does that car have a dealer sticker on the tailgate
or the back window or anything?
You sometimes see that on those imports like...
Yeah, it might.
Or circuit toy or pet or those sorts of things.
Yeah, I know what you mean.
If not, I might have it in the booklets and stuff
to see where in Japan it came from.
I was going to say to you, Scotty,
you can buy an aftermarket cruise control and get it fitted.
That is a positive.
I know it's probably easier to make it all fit in
with all the genuine stuff,
but I guess if it doesn't have it, it doesn't have it.
So it'll be a pain in the arse.
Yeah, well, not too fast.
Just if it was that easy to fix it, then it would be awesome.
It's just, you know, if I was going back,
if it doesn't have the handbrake or anything attached
and I bought it like that,
I'm trying to get the road worthy properly in the first place.
And the place that did it is fairly well known.
Not a metal cable tie, is it?
Metal cable tie on it.
I'm not quite sure.
He looked underneath and saw it.
There was just cable tied up.
Yeah, it's not ideal.
I wouldn't be happy with that, Scotty.
But yeah, I mean, usually,
you've got to have a working handbrake for a road worthy.
Absolutely.
Unless the person I bought it from
had put the stocks back on it and then got the road worthy
and then swapped it back out, I don't know.
Interesting.
I know, but yeah, fairly interesting,
especially where it came from
and the place that did the compliance and the road worthy.
So, yeah.
Oh yeah, and I got my little switch
for the traction control came into.
Oh, cool, nice.
So, it's just a nice little simple plug in the back
and there's already got the four wires hanging out of it.
So, I don't need to really try and plug them in or anything.
Just got to put them on and heat shrink them and hook it up.
Happy days.
Yep, that's it for me.
Nice. Jim.
Hello everyone.
So, Jim.
A few things.
We'll cover a bit later, obviously,
but had a fantastic day and Friday catching up with Matty J
before we get to the drags later on.
Had a really, really enjoyable time.
We seem to be being stalked by Mazda 2s
that were green for some reason.
It was a bit strange.
It was like 10 second gen ones.
We saw 10.
That's not exaggeration.
We saw two on the back of a tow truck.
The same tow truck.
Same tow truck, yeah.
And then on the way home,
I passed a dealership that had a green one.
So, like, might want to take it for a test drive
just to end the day.
So, that was rather funny.
What else is there?
Oh, I've taken a few different cars for a test drive like this.
So, I've test driven that Baby Mahindra,
New Camry, BYD, Seal and Octavia RS Wagon.
So, they were all quite interesting
and different experiences.
What do you think of the Mahindra?
Okay, so, I got into a demonstration
which had, I think, it was five and a half thousand Ks on it.
And it was the up spec one.
So, it's not the cheap one at 24K.
I think it's 27, I think.
So, it has, like, a full length moonroof
and everything else.
Positives first.
In the front and the back, there's a lot of room
for passengers, lots of headroom, legroom,
good visibility out of the car, whatever.
About all of the positives, I think.
So, where it was, it was near the M1.
So, I pulled out, hopped onto there
and that's what I was pulling on.
And I've never had this experience before
and it wasn't windy.
I feel as though because the wheelbase is so short
it felt very unsettled at the highway speed,
like very much like it'd be very easy to over-correct
and sort of lose it.
So, that was a bit disconcerting.
It is obviously the three-cylinder turbo.
But what was, all of this concerning was, like,
moving off from a standing, like, so when you came to a stop
it was acting as though it wanted to stall all the time.
The driver's seat also squeaked
and clicked into place, like, when you were accelerating
and braking.
And the so-called leather seats as well
feel like you're sitting on glue
and I think that probably made the seat squeak worse
because trying to get in and out
it was just like you'd just stick to the seat
and couldn't budge, it was interesting.
The other thing which I think is probably
a car safety thing more than anything else
but the load lip for the hatch is very, very high.
So, even for me, and I'm not ultra-short, not ultra-tall
if you're lifting luggage in to go to the airport
or to put the pram in the back or the golf clubs in the back
it's quite, like, it's quite a high load lip
before it goes down to the floor.
So, it would, yeah,
it could be a case of being much better to buy
a good used car rather than one of those.
It'd be interesting to see what they're like as a manual
but they're cheap for a reason, I think, is my summary.
Jim, are you becoming a dealership pest?
Probably. I mean, like, I quite like sort of,
when I need, like, a bit of a break mentally,
I just sort of go and think,
I'll just go and test drive this or test drive that.
I like it, Jim. I like it.
You're going to get known around town as the serial test driver.
Well, I'm trying to spread out where I go
so that it doesn't really get around.
I did the mehindra and then because I needed to recover
a test drive of the new Camry
and just the sound of the door hinge made
was enough to fix how I was feeling.
So much better.
The only, my gripe with it, with the new Camry though,
the center console, the button that you use to open it
is right, it meets piano, gloss black plastic
near the gear lever, so that will scratch up
like nothing else quickly.
But, yeah, the transition from petrol to electric,
you know, if you're a car person you can tell
but for the average punter you can't tell, it's very, very good.
They do get that right to it, they do a good job.
In that spec it is very much like a taxi spec,
but, you know, it's a little good car.
BYDC, I think, was also interesting,
as in the bones are quite good.
I found, to me, there wasn't a lot of room,
I felt quite cramped inside.
It has got the full length moonroof,
which I think is a bit of a con, but anyway.
And also personal taste, but we live in Australia,
so why do you want a black car with black leather seats
and black roof lining?
I don't get it, I mean, unless you like melting,
I personally don't, but, you know, each to their own.
Has all the cameras in the world that you could see,
that you would need, including a camera
that actually shows you what's underneath the car?
It's a choice, yeah, I know.
I was a bit like, okay, I guess,
so when you run over someone you don't like,
you can just make sure that they actually aren't moving.
To make sure you've killed them.
To make sure that they're not moving anyone,
you have actually killed them,
potentially, I'm not sure.
And I think it's a bit of a thing
with the current sort of group of Triumph cars
that we're getting, is just that they seem
to like a very soft suspension tune.
And it's quite pillowy and bit wallowy and whatever.
And so it does absorb stuff, but when it sort of,
you know, goes over a speedhub and it's like,
after a while it's like, yeah,
and I just feel sick driving to work in this.
So, but the burns are good,
it's better than other ones I've driven.
But by far the most enjoyable was the,
I would only go to go and try and test drive
the base model Octavia wagon
because I wanted to see what that was price point
for the Camry.
But the only ones they had were fenced in
by about four different layers of chemiques
in each direction.
So they had a Octavia RS that was much easier to get to.
The salesperson I spoke to was quite funny.
He had to keep checking his stuff because he said,
I've only been here for a week
because up until last week I was with JLR
and I went, oh, they're actually going up in the world.
That's good.
So I would say the Octavia is sort of like
when you go to a party and the very attractive person
walks in that consumes all of your attention,
but you're also aware that their reputation precedes them.
So perhaps you should engage with that.
Yeah, thoroughly enjoyed that play a little bit too much.
And then the other update, I guess I'll finish on too,
is that I did think I bought a magnet,
but I'm thinking that was a rather pleasant dream
at this point because I still haven't got it.
So yeah.
Yeah.
I wasn't game enough to ask you yesterday.
I knew it was a touchy subject, but not ideal.
I've said that to me, I think 10 days now.
And it's like, OK.
That's really awkward.
Well, the latest quick update was that when I was going
to go and see Maddie, my plan was go and see my fruit bit,
go back and pick up the magnet and then, you know,
do something in the evening and whatever,
because it's 7.20 in the morning.
They phoned me to say that the car was all ready to go
through roadworthy and everything done,
and it should be done by early afternoon, I thought.
Finally, hour later, they rang me and they said,
so the second start motor that we put in this morning
when we went to move it, it started smoking.
It's not ideal.
It's not ideal.
It's very bad for you.
Yeah, it picked up a bad habit.
Yes.
Yes.
So then it was, I will have it ready on Monday.
And then it was, oh, it's arriving today.
And then today it was, oh, well, it should be ready tomorrow.
And the Civic's going in for a transmission service on Thursday.
So I'm going to see how much longer this keeps dragging out.
I think at this time I might just wait until make the 45 maybe.
That's a fair way.
Yeah.
Well, this point feels like it might be coming closer to them,
I think.
So yeah, but anyway, hopefully next week I'll have a more
positive update.
And then of course the other thing too was last night went out
with Ed, David, Andrew Wigglesworth, Nick and Rowan,
and had a fantastic time at Mornington and then went
for a lovely drive as well.
Took some fantastic pictures.
So yeah, other than the motor, it's been pretty good.
Nice, lovely.
The mechanic being contacting you?
Or you contacting them?
Most of the time it's been me contacting them.
It's always the way.
The other thing I have to say too is that the mechanic sort of said
to me on Monday, I'm getting a really bad vibe about your car.
And I sort of resisted the urge to try and strangle by remote control.
But yeah, that was rather interesting.
What?
Yeah.
I used to rock up in person.
Yeah.
See, I would do that, but because they're an hour and three quarters.
Yeah, that's fair.
It's a bit like, yeah, but yeah.
I used to leave work because I won't go into full detail,
but I mean, he had it for well over a year.
It's been sitting there, well over a year sitting there for.
And it was a small garage and I'd just swing around after work
and stuff and just check and just stand and get in his way.
And it's the only way I could get a response or else he just wouldn't
message me, wouldn't get anything.
Wow.
That's a really ineffective way to run a business.
It's really, yeah.
Doesn't have a workshop anymore.
That makes sense.
Hello.
Hello.
The word vibe should never be mentioned by mechanic.
These things are put together with screws and oil and gaskets.
Vibe doesn't come into it for me.
So, you know, if you're, if you're doing stuff by feel or by vibe.
Yep.
I don't buy it.
Anyway, that's just.
He starts checking its horoscopes and stuff.
Yeah, exactly.
I'll say, Jim, your car is a tourist.
You know,
stubborn.
It's very.
Please tell me it's.
It's a touring car.
Car updates with me.
Phew.
The Pajero has been given some love by Matthew J and myself,
but mainly Matthew J.
We did the clay bar.
We did the Polish.
I used far too much Polish and so clogged up the thing and Matty was
like, no, you don't need that much.
So he had to fix my wrongdoings.
So he does all the work.
I know.
I know.
I used to do that with mom.
We did that.
And then we had to have a break because some days in between,
before we did the ceramic coat ourselves,
which is surprisingly easy.
Once you do the prep work correctly to put the ceramic coat on,
that's not a hard thing.
So we did two coats on the bonnet and one coat everywhere else.
And ooh, Simpsons, very happy.
He's very, he's shining and gleaming and silky smooth.
So that was fun.
What else?
The big girl to rewind a little bit.
A friend of mine is going up to the 50th anniversary in Canberra
this week, coming weekend of the W123 Mercedes Benz.
He is in Australia.
National gathering in Canberra.
He's got two, a 240 diesel sedan and a 280 TE wagon.
Ideally, he would take the sedan with his wife and me
and our friend Tommy, we're going to take up the wagon.
But I said, well, if I'm going to drive this wagon,
can I sort of, you know, give it a bit of a going over?
So he basically, yeah, loaned it to me for the last week.
So I've been fanging it around everywhere.
And at first I thought it was okay, you know, good oil pressure,
temp's okay, gearbox changes all right.
You know, this wagon will make it to Canberra.
But it's got this intermittent sort of stuttery problem where it
feels like it's not getting enough fuel, like bleh, bleh, bleh,
you know, and it sort of half turns itself off.
And it seems to be really random.
I can't quite work out whether it's hot, cold pattern, you know,
of it.
So that and the fact it's got no aircon that's going to be
really hot this week and weekend.
I sort of said to him, yeah, no, I'm not taking it.
You can have it back.
So hence and when I thought, well, the car to take would be
the big girl, you know, an interstate sort of road trip,
but that needs tires because it got flat spots on them.
And I didn't want to, I didn't want a vibration at a hundred.
So I booked it in tomorrow morning to get four new boots.
No one really makes 205 70 14s anymore.
They're a sort of a wide 14.
Nexon do them.
Handcooked do them.
That's, that's kind of it.
Your Michelin's and your Continental's and they just don't make them anymore.
So I was like, all right, give me a hand cooks.
I'm having to pay more than I wanted, but that'll sort it.
I'd rather that make a big difference to that car.
I think so.
Yeah, it needed to be done.
I was just being tight asked by not doing it.
So that's the big girl.
The moat got a very good drive up in the hills the other night.
That was fun.
Twisty roads and I get Volkswagen.
Nick and I had a drag on the way home and I won that.
So I was happy about that.
Love it.
Well, considering you lost the last drag race against me in the Mx5 and the MR2.
Oh, yeah, true.
That was a long time ago.
You had to make it up somehow, didn't you?
Yeah, yeah.
So I'm making a Vauxy.
It's like slow and slower.
What other car stuff?
Odyssey.
You've got sold David's old Odyssey that got got,
went home to a couple of guys from a garage who were going to use it as their
sort of loan car run about car supposedly.
Ford laser has been given a roadworthy list, which is not too bad.
So we just need to do those things and move on that.
My Lexus is currently having a couple of touch ups in the panel shop from where
the old lady had scraped a few things on the bumpers and whatnot.
And once that's back, that'll get advertised.
I reckon that's about it for cars.
Am I forgetting anything?
I don't think I've bought anything else or done anything else.
Pretty good.
David Prince.
Well, as I said, everything started, which was a good sign.
Actually, I haven't tried the Civic Grand Prix yet,
but that will get started next day or two.
But the good thing was, the great thing I heard this week is that I gave my,
I think I mentioned before my son is restoring an N360 scamp that I gave him
as a housewarming present when he bought his house.
And it's coming up a treat.
But when I, just before we went away was the classic Japan event that I took
the scamp to down at Cruden Farm and his place is not far from there.
And he said, well, how about you?
I have the scamp on your way because in putting the one that he's got back together,
he said it'd be really handy to have one there to check things of how they were
because mine's very original.
So he's had a great time putting his back together.
But he told me the other day he's actually re-bushed the gear shift,
which hasn't been done in 30 years and desperately needed it.
And also done the engine mount, which he had to spare one of those.
So I'm very much looking forward to getting to drive that.
We've got a big beginning of the year barbecue for the Honda Car Club tomorrow night.
And a friend of mine is bringing my LN, the panel van version of the scamp that I have.
I haven't driven that for some time.
But he's bringing that along and then dropping it at my place afterwards
so that I can get the I've got new tie rods for the steering rack,
which it's all he needs.
And because of the lack of use over the last couple of years,
it's been started and run, but not sort of driven much.
It was the last time it was going to be driven.
It had a massive hole in the exhaust,
which was just through starting it and not drying it out,
you know, not running it long enough.
So at the same time, the workshop that I use in Burwood nearby
have been looking for the tiniest little muffler they could find to fit to that.
So there's a chance that'll be finding a new home.
So, yeah, those sort of things will bring it up to the condition it should be
and hopefully get a road with it pretty easily that way with those.
Like, as you mentioned, I took the end one for a lovely drive last night down the peninsula.
That bit of road between Mount Martha and Dramana around the around the edge of the water
is just such a cracking bit of road.
It's always I had some great drives around there.
And last night was no exception.
So, yeah, yeah, no, all good in this end of the woods.
Lovely. Sticky with scams. I got a phone call today.
No, I did. I pick it up Monday.
Matthew, was it get this bloody thing out of my workshop?
A bit of that.
But he's also like it's to be roadworthy on Friday.
So I'll pick it up Monday afternoon.
Has he got the car?
He's also he spent the last week just wanting to finish it properly.
So what was wrong with the car?
I'm not sure.
He's like, he's like coming explain.
He's like in action. I would say in action.
Yeah. So it's all good, apparently.
He's driven it with a tray plate to pick up parts and a few other bits and pieces.
And he's like, yep, I'm confident to give this car back to you.
I'm like, OK, good.
So that's exciting.
So I will like, I just saw it.
I'm like, oh, shit, do I want money or something?
Like, is that the reason they call me?
You know, they're like, no, you know, come in, come and pick it up Monday
Monday morning, because it's getting the one on Friday.
But I said to him, because like, I think he's just going to open the shop
up for me on Monday, because it's a public holiday, I believe.
So he's going to say, come pick it up.
But Friday night, I'm a bit busy.
So I won't be able to.
Matthew got a question.
Yes.
Does he want another scam to sort the carbon after that one goes?
I can ask, but I think he's scammed out.
Like he's one.
He's other ones.
Just ask.
Just ask him about it.
I can.
I can definitely do that.
The funny thing is, his one is driving beautifully.
It drives really nicely.
Well, whatever.
And I was like, I was like, yeah, you know what?
Thanks, man.
So the body is getting very close to being done on that, I think, too,
from what he was telling me.
Wow, brilliant.
That's that white one, David, that came out of that garage in
Scamp Hall.
I saw it.
The last time I saw it, the paint was completely stripped.
It was back to bare metal.
So yeah, that's good.
So yes, he was, I couldn't believe my eyes when he's like,
come pick it up Monday.
I'm like, okay, cool.
We're on here, ladies and gentlemen.
It's a Christmas miracle just a bit.
It's a starting school miracle, I think.
Sorry, Rob, what did you say?
Needle issue or something charging?
Yeah, the brushes in the generator were munted.
Where on earth would you get some of them?
Yeah, well, I had to find them.
Well, David Prince got me some, but I...
That's what he's waiting for.
This is true.
But I did manage to find some new ones as well online.
I bought three sets, one for myself, one for you, David.
I think I gave you a set.
Yes.
And Rodney got it, kept the set for himself just in case for one day.
So yeah, so...
Easy job or was it a bit...
No, it's not super hard, just a bit fiddly.
Once you get the stator off the end of the engine.
Yeah.
And so he had him in the auto-elect that he's got there,
just did that together because his auto-elect rebuilds alternators
and stuff all the time.
So he's pretty good with all that sort of things, I suppose.
So yeah, couldn't believe my ears.
I thought this was a...
I was looking for Ashton Kutcher.
I thought I was being punked, but it wasn't okay.
Hey, scam cam might yet happen.
It might yet happen.
Don't start rusting again by telling me to get it back on time.
No, I don't bloody hell.
So we've got to make that happen.
But yeah, I'm excited.
I've been driven in a very long time and I'm really keen to see it.
So I will be talking to you tomorrow about that, David,
to get on a club plate and the likes so we can discuss that tomorrow.
The next steps for that.
Bring the forms tomorrow.
Yeah, I can get four.
Do I need the roadworthy first?
Ideally, yes.
Ideally, but get me the forms.
Okay, cool.
I can do that.
So yeah, that is the latest with that.
I've driven the Fiesta Affairbit, which has been great.
I've been enjoying that.
So yeah, I've been driving that, driving the Typhoon.
I've actually been cycling through them all.
The only car I haven't driven this week is the Camry.
So I drove the MR2 today.
I've got it here.
I'm bringing that tomorrow night, gentlemen.
So yeah, the only car that I haven't driven this week is the Camry.
But mum's quite unwell, so I don't really want to go there and annoy her.
I'll be dropping her off some food and things.
So yes, but pretty much, I think that's my car updates, gentlemen.
So Friday night, gentlemen, I think all of us except for David,
because David was still recovering from horrific jet lag,
went to Calder Park Raceway and enjoyed a night of drag racing
and a role racing action at Calder Park.
It was fun.
That's the first time I've been to the drags in a very long time.
The last time I was there, probably 10-ish years ago,
I did go a time before that and I took my laser on the track for a bit of fun.
That was a very long time ago.
But it was actually cool to see all the different cars going and having a run.
It was good to see Scotty in real life, Jim in real life,
Edward in real life, Rob in real life, Chad was there as well.
Some of my mates from work came along as well,
not from teaching, but from super cheap.
I'd be more surprised if the teachers came.
It was a great night.
It was fun.
We got to see my brother race his F6.
I think overall it was a really good evening.
What did you guys think of the evening, gentlemen?
Awesome.
Except for that wind, it just wouldn't stop.
Yeah, I know.
But, Rob, it did blow the smoke from the rubber burning away, which was cool.
I hadn't been in years, probably since I was 20 or so,
because I remember driving my mum's TR Magna Wagon to the Calder Drags.
I think that was the last time I went.
It had a blue.
Yeah, it had a blue.
How to do.
I know how to do.
I know in the drags.
Yeah, it was just in the car park, unfortunately.
But I was glad to be back.
There were some interesting things there.
Volvo 240 Wagon with a V8 in it, I think.
A statesman that was off the charts, like a W8 or something.
That did in the nines, I think.
It did a 9-3.
Which is really insane.
And it made a lot of noise doing it too.
Some of the cars that you think are hot, like an Audi RS6,
or something, you know, that's a hot, quick car.
You just don't even hear anything.
They just sort of go, and they don't make any noise.
Whereas you want a bit of noise,
and that statesman made full noise.
That was crazy.
I think Scotty, you and I were saying,
that's probably the craziest car of the evening.
It was the fastest car of the evening too.
9-3 per quarter mile is really quick.
Supercharged, Ron, it was massive.
Big Magnus and Supercharger.
It was virtually bigger than the engine itself.
It was huge.
And one of the most comical cars was a white high-ace van.
Jim and I were saying last night,
we think it's the late 90s model, maybe.
And it literally looks like two kind of half-assed tradies
have just rocked up.
It had roof racks on it.
After work.
After work.
They've just gone into the wrong lane.
They're meant to be there fixing a signal light or something.
No, no, the highest was lined up.
It's got some sort of, I think, a mid-mounted V8.
That was, yeah.
And it flies.
It beat the car.
It was up against whatever that was.
It was a 12-second car.
12 seconds.
I mean, for a...
It's just ridiculous to watch this thing going down the straight.
It was weird because it would take off fairly slow.
And then all of a sudden, it just hits like hyperdrive
and just, whoosh.
He was gone.
There were some motorbikes as well that...
It was good to watch them.
They're sort of slipping and sliding all over the start line.
And then I was talking, does it to you, Scotty,
about Bert Munro, the fastest Indian?
Yes.
That movie.
And he went to the Bonneville Salt Flats
and set a record for his particular size of bike
and engine size.
And I think it still stands, I was saying to Scott.
Oh, wow.
I don't think in that class of bike anyone has beat him
since the 60s or the 70s.
It's well worth a watch that movie.
I think it's the world's fastest Indian it's called.
Yeah.
Yes.
If you haven't seen it, top tip car talk.
Watch that good film, Anthony Hopkins.
Oh, Anthony Hopkins.
Okay.
Have you not seen it, Matty?
I have not seen it, no.
Oh, you'd love it.
It's a great...
Yeah, I'll have to give that a go.
Put that on the list.
We'll watch that.
Yeah, absolutely.
Let's do that.
But no, I think it was a fun night.
But I think to agree, I would agree with you.
And that statesman was just completely bonkers.
Still had a full interior except for the two front seats.
It was just...
You had a parachute on the back.
Yeah, I was going to say, I think it had a parachute.
Yeah.
That's when you know it's serious.
It's kind of a parachute on the back.
You're like, all right.
It's either going off a cliff in a James Bond film,
or it's a quick...
Yeah, I think it was...
I reckon if you would have deployed it,
you would have been blown away somewhere with those strong...
Yeah.
That's right.
But that was...
Yeah, that can't bleed me away.
I was like, fine.
That thing's insane.
Just...
And the noise it made.
It sounded like thunder as it ripped past.
And I mean, if you put that on stock wheels
and obviously hid the engine,
if you look from behind it, it'd be like,
oh yeah, this looks like a standard statement.
And then you get up close and, my God.
I think it was road-registered.
It was.
Yeah, absolutely it was.
But you could take that to Kohl's.
Yeah, take it to Kohl's.
So yeah, we saw that.
You had a Starlet?
There was a Plain Jane Starlet?
Starlet Life.
I was like, good on you.
Give it a crack.
It pulled a mountain.
Yeah.
My friend Alex was there in his 135 hatch.
That did a 12-7, I think.
And he was said after he was running 98
and he said with a tune and running E85,
I think he would have gone quicker, he reckons.
Yeah.
They all reckon that.
But you know, it might shave off half a second
or a second or something.
Yeah, but it was quick.
I was speaking to Luca at the end of an hour
and we were saying just some of the Euro stuff
that's from factory new with all wheel drive and everything.
They're just stupid fast from the factory.
There's not much you can really do to keep up with them,
especially with the amount of force induction
and everything they use these days.
They are silly fast.
For example, Rob, your son's C63.
That's bonkers quick from the get-go.
There was an M5 there, the last model, not the current one.
And that's from factory with the all wheel drive system
and a low 11-second car, which is just mind-boggling
that that's a road legal car that they can sell.
But seeing all the different cars there,
I think was a real highlight for me on the night.
Not only was there a van and there were statesmen,
there was a few statesmen actually,
but there was something for everybody, I think.
And that's what made it a real fun night.
There was Japanese stuff, there was Aussie stuff,
there was trucks, there was some trucks.
So it had a bit of an interesting flavour of vehicles.
What were your favourite cars of the evening, gentlemen?
I look in the van.
Statesmen was quick, I did enjoy that.
We'd probably have to go to...
There was like a...
I think it was like a VT or a VX.
Oh, yeah.
And it was turbocharged V8.
It looked stock as a rock, didn't look like anything special,
didn't even sound that special.
It was so quiet.
But it was so freaking fast.
It was like 11s or something, it was running 10s or 11s,
like easy all day, just playing.
And you wouldn't even know just that kind of style
just caught me off guard.
It was just nice and quiet.
Then it just does a massive burnout.
Off it went.
The best part about that car, Scott,
it had a license plate, it said VT something.
But it was that dark green that a lot of them came in,
like that just very mundane colour.
It had a hubcaps, it was still running the hubcaps.
It looked like...
If you didn't know what it had underneath the bonnet,
it looked like a standard VT that your mum drove.
And you wouldn't because he starts it up and you don't hear it.
Quiet.
Because the turbo just muffles it so much.
I thought it was maybe turbo V6 or something,
but I heard someone say it was turbo V8.
It was quick.
Yeah, that was good.
I reckon it sounded the best.
It was that TC, I'm sure it was a TC Cortina.
The white one.
Yeah, that sounded great.
It sounded like a real strong motor.
I haven't heard a motor like that for a long time.
A long time.
You could just feel the actual heat of power in it.
It just...
Yeah, it was amazing.
You could feel it like in the ground.
It was loud.
Yeah.
No.
Not 60 days at Toyota, Rob.
Hmm.
Yeah.
That's right.
So...
The VK, VK, Barra?
Oh, that was funny.
VK with the Barra.
Correct, yeah.
That's all sorts of wrong.
Yeah, well, let's see.
What was the play?
VK...
Australian.
That's what that is.
Yeah, kind of Australian.
It was VK FPV was written on it.
Yeah.
So that was the last play.
TV Crows should never have issued that number play.
One of the people that was with us, Karen,
she's a big holding head,
even though she drives a Ford Focus ST.
She was like, that's...
It's just not right.
She felt, she's like, I feel sick.
That shouldn't be the case.
I'm with Karen.
I'm with Karen.
Yeah.
There was a golf there that had...
The number plate was R-I-P-D-S-G.
I think he manual swapped it, maybe.
Good.
That's cool.
Another car that was ridiculously quick,
that was in the nines, was that RS3.
Yeah, that grey one.
Oh.
They're all grey.
Yeah, they're all grey.
Yeah.
It's just in its primer.
Yeah, correct.
That was like a nine.
That was a nine-nine, I think it did.
It was a fast car.
Those, as I said, a lot of those Europeans,
it's just mental.
That's a mental car.
Jim, what was your pick of the night?
Well, I think firstly that, you know,
considering it was Lucas first outing in that car,
I thought his times were really, really quite impressive too.
Yeah.
I think quite enjoyed that.
Apart from the highest it preferred to...
It's also a bit hard to go past a turbo territory, I think.
Yeah.
It looks ridiculous, this enormous tower of a vehicle
hurtling down at some ridiculous speed.
You know, it just looks ridiculous,
but yeah, I kind of couldn't go past that.
Yeah, a new shot car.
Yeah, a new shot.
Well, you know, Mr Turbotary himself is selling his territory turbo,
so, you know, I think we make the car talk,
drive car without the territory turbo,
and we, you know, make a lot of people be like,
actually, that's ridiculous that 2.2 ton bus
is just ripping 12-second buses.
I was also quite happy to finally figure out
where all the G60 turbos had ended up.
They're all there.
Yes.
Because I was like, where have they all gone?
And they went, oh, okay, they're all here, buddy.
That makes sense.
We're all making that same sound with the ZF gearbox
when it hits the limiter.
Oh, it's a good noise.
Yeah, you just hear that all the time.
Like, ah, yes.
One of the other craziest cars there was that,
was it the RX3?
That white RX3 that was like lifting up in the air.
And it nearly lost it.
Nearly lost it.
You could have gone light halfway down the straight,
and you could see it almost wanting to kick up two wheels
and like, oh, easy big fella, you know.
How come flying out of that?
This is a bit of debris that come out of it.
He smashed into the middle markers for the lanes.
Okay, yep, yep, yep, yep.
May that make sense.
No, that was stupid quick.
Like, it's, yeah.
That was often so.
Like, you knew it was, you're sitting there spooling up for ages.
It was just like, you're waiting.
Like, the loving grin, you're just waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting.
Yeah, the car's already finished and gone.
You're just still waiting.
Oh, but like, yeah, that's, for me,
I get why people would put like big engines
or like, you know, massive turbos on a rotary
in a small car.
Like, you can get quick times, but that's just a death trap.
Like, that'd scare the crap out of you to car like that.
There was an escort panel van, a Mark II panel van.
Yes.
I think he had a bit of trouble.
He couldn't really, wasn't really.
He had a parachute as well, but didn't seem to be going that quick.
Yeah, I don't think he was.
Yeah.
That's why it's called panel van.
That's his name's Dexter.
Dexter, he's the one who actually done all the rust parts
on my W108.
Oh, right.
So you built that car himself.
Oh, cool.
Nice.
Yeah.
You just do it in my Mercedes many years ago.
That was falling pieces in the shop.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There you go.
Well, that's a small world.
Yeah.
Well, yeah.
There was, there was, there was a really quick S15,
like that yellow S15.
That was, that was.
That looks so clean.
It did.
It was really nice.
And the chasers EVO, which is pretty legendary in the drag scene
that, that was there and made the clearance.
And there was a really fast EVO eight, Scotty.
That was a bit of you.
But, um, yeah, I was impressed as you, as you were leading to
earlier, Jim, um, with, with my brother, with, you know,
it was his first time out at the drags.
Um, like he's been to watch the drags numerous times,
but the first time, you know, he's done it in a legal, um,
in a legal venue.
And, you know, the, the, his first run, he got a 13,
but he missed two years, you know, and, um, you know, he's,
I was like, oh, you know, he like lost to a yellow VN.
And then Ed was like, oh, what a piece of shit.
Lost to a VN.
Yeah.
Um, but then his next, his next run, he raced, uh, it wasn't,
it wasn't in five, um, competition or drive thing and extra,
whatever they called it.
And so it made him down in the end.
And that was a really cool chase, actually.
So just asking him, you guys, um, have, have actually, um,
done a quarter mile down, down a drag race track.
I've done it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Me too.
Oh, David, you've done a quarter mile drag.
I have, I have in the Dutton rally in 1995,
there was a mile sprint and I was in the scam.
And I came last.
No, we weren't last.
It was like a 1925 delage or something.
Over than us.
I've done one in P 76, 16, seven, down a quarter mile.
There you go.
That's good.
Oh man.
It's quick.
It was quicker than my laser.
I'm 16 nine.
Thank you.
I think we've, I've measured the scamp by calendar rather than
it was a, it was a shame actually, because in that,
that really dragged our school down.
It hadn't been for the quarter mile.
We ended up outright out like 16th out of 175 cars for the
event, for the whole event.
If we hadn't been second or third or fourth last or whatever
it was for that event, we, I ring would have been the top five.
Oh wow.
Tell me David, did you at least,
Amazingly good.
Yeah.
Yeah, it was, it was more because a lot of it was navigational
sort of stuff.
Yeah.
Carter sort of stuff.
And Murray Atkinson, the mate that I did it with was the
current Victoria Modicana champion at the time.
So he could certainly drive very, very well in the
Modicana stages, but, and we just nailed the navigation
like every stage sort of thing.
We were always in the top two or three for the navigation.
So, but yeah, because we were so soft,
the quarter mile, it just dragged us down to the 16th.
Tell me David, did you at least drop the clutch a little bit?
You know, try to.
Actually, I footage of it somewhere.
I'll try and find it because I've got,
they team, they, they paired you up with two cars.
There were, you know, two cars for each, each drag.
It was at the Aerodrome at Ballarat,
Ballarat, yeah, Ballarat Aerodrome on the runway there.
And I was with an SL Benz actually, I think.
And I think from everywhere, we had the leap on it.
Like off the line, you know, it didn't end well.
The last time I was at the drags, like with, with the laser,
it was the one and only time I went to the Drazen in that car
was I like, I was racing my mate.
Well, the reason we went there is because a few of our mates
from high school used to race their Commodores and Falcons
and things about, you know, and they're like,
and my mate Adam, and he's come on the show,
he's got a, he's got a 265 Hemi Charger.
He's, he's like, we should do this.
And then all the boys like, yeah, why don't you guys race
your crappy little nuggets against each other
and see how the big boys play.
I'm like, all right.
So, so, so we went down and he was in his Astra SRI 2.2
and I had my little laser and, and we lined up,
we had a couple of races.
He beat me.
He had obviously more power and, you know, more torque.
I didn't mean to buy much though.
Like he was, he probably had me buy about a car.
But anyway, the last run of the night,
I got lined up against a VG Commodore
and this thing was a monster.
And it, it just launched like you wouldn't believe
and it was gone.
And my cousin was filming from the, from the,
from the grandstands.
And the, the, and the answer was like,
there goes the Commodore.
It's a, you know, 11 or whatever it was.
And he just pauses.
And the laser goes by.
He's like, and the laser comes through.
It was quite like an extensive pause,
which was, which was quite funny.
But I'll tell you what though,
when you line up and you stage up,
like your heart starts to run a little bit.
Like you, you feel, you, it's, it's, it's exciting.
Like you feel a bit of adrenaline getting through.
You're like, okay, you know, I've staged up and, you know,
the first stage, second stage.
And then, and then you're, you know, you're putting,
you're putting to gear and, you know,
it gets you going and like delay is not a fast car by,
by any stretch of the means, but you know, it's,
I still was like, you can come to the end of the run
and your heart's beating, you know, you know,
adrenaline's pumping and it's, it's a cool thing.
I think everybody should do it at least once, you know,
it's, it's definitely, yeah, it was, it was very fun.
But yeah, I was, I was super proud of my brother.
He, he took his F six out.
It's super hard to get any really good times in a manual
transmission car and he managed to do an 11,
it was an 11, 9, 11, 8, which is quite remarkable for,
you know, for a manual transmission car.
So he's, he's, he reckons he's got more in it.
He's got to do a few, a few more tweaks,
but he wants to go back and give it a call.
It's easily, it's easily got more in it.
When he gets that launch down pat,
that'll knock the times down heaps.
Absolutely.
He's like to me, it's the launch that kills him because like
the way he mowed down that M5 was ridiculous.
He was saying he had a lot of traction,
but to me it looked like he was actually spinning quite a bit.
He did.
It looked like he was spinning, I think.
And, but also I don't think he, he's,
he's like, I didn't really dump the clutch.
I just kind of feathered it and then kind of he's off the power
and I didn't really, you know, he's like,
I don't know what to expect.
You don't know if it's just going to all of a sudden snap on you
or what it's going to do.
Yeah.
That's exactly right.
So I think he was, he was really, um, he was really unsure about it.
Um, you know, obviously first time like on a prepped surface and
you know, he's like, it's like the ties have made a big difference.
He's like, I never really hooked up much, but this, this,
it hooked, but obviously, obviously it spun a bit,
but he's like first time it kind of bogged and then I had to wait
for the boost to build again.
And so he's like, I don't know.
It's, it's all, it's, you know, it's, it's, it's because it becomes
like a proper thing you practice, right?
Like you got to keep practicing and practicing,
but then until you nail your, you know, until you know your launch.
Yeah.
Do you have anything too?
Has he modified the suspension or the bushings in the back end
and all that?
He would have to do that.
Yeah.
That's all done.
So he's got to, um, he's got to, it's pretty much build drive line.
So build tail shaft, build, um, drive shafts, build diff,
you know, all that stuff.
So, you know, it's, it's made to do it.
Um, suspension's been all done.
So he's like, it's been set up for, for like, for performance,
you know, driving.
So, you know, that's, that's, that's been, you know, it's, it's like,
it's like, it felt solid.
Like I don't know if it's, you know, in a case now it's like, it felt,
it felt fine.
Like it didn't, it wasn't, you know, all over the shop.
It felt, he's like, I've never felt it so planted.
It just was just hooked and went.
So he's like, it's got way more in it.
He wants to try getting, get, uh, like into the tens.
I said, if you get into the tens, that's a ridiculous time for a manual.
Like that's, yeah.
Yeah.
That's, that's really good.
He reckons it's got a, it's got a low 11 in it.
So we'll, we'll see how he goes.
Next time he goes around with a launch, um, but he got the engine light check.
It's all sorted.
So it was, um, it was the Haltec just saying, oh, you know, it was like an,
I think it was an overfueling thing.
So he said the log to the tuner.
So they're going to make a few different tweaks and stuff to it.
But the, um, but yeah.
I'm glad it's nothing serious.
Yeah.
So, um, just, I mean, Haltec's pretty good, pretty good for that sort of stuff,
just to say, Hey, just, just hang on.
It's, it went into engine protection and he's like, I'd rather do that and
then back off, um, then blow it up.
You know, so, but yeah, he's, it doesn't think it's too much.
Just a bit more practice, a bit more seat time.
And I think he'll, I think he'll, he'll do a low 11, which would be really good.
But I did proceed to school at one point.
Didn't ask about it.
Sorry about that.
Yeah.
I'll stand behind it.
I didn't realize.
So at the end of the night, um, we're walking out of there of the event and, um,
chatted and I think you wanted to see it.
I was also like sitting, you know, seeing the engine and, you know,
all the things he's done to it.
And my brother's like, oh, you know, hop in the car.
He started it.
And he's like, oh, precious, precious button.
I didn't realize Scott and Karen had stood behind the car.
And it was the, you know, it was the anti-lag there.
And it just started going bang, bang, bang.
And then I just, he yelling and I'm like, Oh my God,
I didn't realize it was behind the car.
So it is quite loud.
I mean, Edward Bunting heard it in a car and it was letting.
Drive a few Sunday mornings ago.
And I was probably five car links behind Luca in, in the S class, you know,
windows up.
And, uh, when he did that thing, I jumped in my car.
I thought someone had let up a bomb or something.
And then I'm like, oh, it's just Luca, but yeah, you know,
in an insulated car, five cars back, I shouldn't jump.
No, you should.
Yes. Very loud.
Very loud.
The drags was fun.
It was fun to go back.
You know, we should, we should do another night of it.
How often are they on?
Is that monthly or what is it?
I think, I think they're monthly every second week in the summer,
but yeah, I think they're mainly monthly during the winter.
I think so.
You probably know a bit better.
I think so.
I'm not sure.
They got something next time is, um, in February.
Okay.
Cool.
Basically just rock up and pay your money.
Yeah.
120 bucks to run David.
And you can fit as many, if it as many runs as you like in the
night.
Let's take the catty.
Yeah.
Let's take the catty.
I'd need the RIP DSG.
I'm not taking it in a speeding fine and impounding.
And I'd take the N1.
Oh, I tell you what, David, if you take the N1,
I'll take the Fiesta.
We'll have a three cylinder six speed manual turbo race.
That would be good actually.
I know.
I also jokingly spoke to Chad and we sort of jokingly sort of
said that we should have a race between his two.
I go in my house.
Yeah.
That would be pretty slow race, but be funny.
I think that's going to be as slow as the trucks.
Oh, I don't know.
Oh, you.
You're in a month to go by the end.
Hey, we can do yours.
I go too.
But you know, I've got fuel injection though.
Injection for yours is heavier.
Right.
We'll have to wait and see what happens.
Use is a commuter bus.
Yeah.
You can, you can, you can spend every wheel in first.
What size motor have you got?
2.4.
2.4.
So you've got a bigger motor, but you've got more weight.
And then what's the egg one that Chad has?
That's a 2.2, I think.
I think it's a 2.4.
Maybe they're 2.4 as well.
It's a 2.4.
And here's his manual too, isn't it?
Here's his manual.
Well, I reckon Chad might have that one.
Yeah.
I'll tell you what though.
If you bring it.
I reckon the night before you would just see Ed removing all the
seats from the.
No, no.
No cheater.
No cheater.
He'll put the tint on really dark so you can't see in the van
because you'll be like, oh, you know, I'm still full weight,
guys, still full weight.
I reckon, I reckon Chad, no.
Yeah, I reckon that'd be a fun race.
The egg to Margo is heavier.
He's got a four engine, but it is heavier.
Did they come out of the V6 days early on?
No.
Not in Australia.
I think you could get them with a V6 overseas,
but you could get them on a Supercharger.
Okay.
Then it was some Supercharged version, I think.
The egg.
The egg one.
Not my one.
Actually, there's a 4WD on Facebook Marketplace the other day that
popped up for five grand, which looked pretty tidy.
4WD.
4WD.
Not Supercharged though, but the top line in the egg.
Good thing.
Let's do a quiz.
All right, gentlemen.
Hard quiz time.
So, you know the rules, 10 questions plus some bonus questions
as we normally do.
So I've done the quiz for tonight.
Now, I'm going to make a new thing for the quiz, gentlemen.
So I'm going to keep a tally of the quiz tally end of the year
from here.
And obviously the ones that I go into don't count because,
you know, I shouldn't count because I'm not going to.
So I'm not the main players, but the winner,
I still have to decide what I want to do for the winner,
but it'll be, the winner goes to spoils and there might be,
I don't know, box of chocolates or-
Free laser.
Free laser.
Or a pub dinner.
So it's officially on, gentlemen, like the proverbial Donkey Kong.
To go thrash the typhoon.
Yeah.
That's what he wants.
He's like, I don't want to pub dinner.
They get to drag one of your cars of their place.
All right.
Question number one, gentlemen.
Honda's sales increased for the first time since their
new sales model was introduced in Australia.
Which models, keyword models, made an increase on sales over
the previous point for each.
David was in their first.
Yeah.
That's correct.
That's one point.
That is also correct.
They have the two answers.
Thank you.
So two points to you, David.
All the other ones made, sold less, which is, which is a bit
disappointing, but they sold under a hundred accords for the
whole year, I think.
Go the accord.
Go the accord.
Go the accord.
Question number two, Mitsubishi has announced that they were
releasing a new EV for the first time in, I believe, 15 years.
A new EV.
A new EV, correct.
The maker of this new EV for Mitsubishi.
So they'll be making it for them.
Currently makes what other product?
Ed.
Oh, I thought it was Renault Captur.
But no, you're saying it's another product.
It could be a car.
It could not be a car.
It's not a car.
No, no, no.
Lights.
Lights is incorrect.
Rob.
Bob, just a big guess out there.
Is there a battery manufacturer?
Well, I'm assuming that make parts of the batteries, but it's
not what I've got here.
David.
Panasonic.
It's not Panasonic.
And it's like, I'm after like, not after the name of the brand,
but I'm after like what they make.
What's the product?
Sorry.
Scotty, what did you say?
I didn't bunze in yet.
Oh, sorry.
He was Jim.
I'll just guess and say vacuum cleaner.
I wish it was.
No, it's not a vacuum cleaner.
Scotty.
I think who got left to guess Scotty.
And I think that's it.
Yeah.
Scotty.
I'm going to say they make.
Oh, they make boats.
Incorrect.
They make the iPhone.
So the, yeah, they are the current makers of the iPhone.
So not Apple.
No, not Apple.
It's they're the people that make it in China.
So what is China?
I'm going to double check where it's from, but it's.
China.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm pretty sure Apple comes from China and your Samsung's come from
South Korea.
Okay.
There you go.
Question number three in the movie days of thunder.
Cold trickle played by Tom Cruise was sponsored by what?
In his race car.
What was the brand that's.
David.
David was a Penn's oil.
Wasn't Penn's oil.
Yellow is, is part of the color though.
That's, I can probably say where you made that connection.
Picture in the wrong color then.
Rob.
Rob.
The vault.
Wasn't the vault.
So like it's.
Yeah.
I'll put it as a yellow wasn't the only color.
So like, you know, it's, it's a.
No.
Scott.
Ed.
Was it a whiskey, like an alcohol brand?
Um, let me check what they are.
Like, like, you know, Budweiser or some kind of alcoholic brand.
You don't even know the answer.
I'm looking it up.
It is, it is not, um, it is not a, uh, it is not a, um, an alcoholic
beverage.
No, but it is a beverage.
Oh.
Half a point.
That's half point.
I'll give you a point five.
It's a beverage.
Yes.
All right, Edward.
There you go.
I'm being, I'm being very competitive now that I know there's
something at stake at the end of the year.
Did someone say steak?
Did you say steak?
Uh, Scott.
Scott.
My guess was Coca-Cola.
Oh, you know what Scott?
I'll give you a point five.
I'll tell you why.
Because the makers of this product where Coca-Cola is called
Mellow Yellow.
It was kind of like a Mountain Dew lime orange thing.
Yeah.
So Mellow Yellow.
Sure.
Yeah.
Sure.
Yeah.
Question number four.
What car ad had this quote at 6,800 RPM, the engine won't
complain.
David.
David.
There's the RX seven.
There's the RX seven.
Well done.
That's quick.
So it goes, the engine at 6,800 RPM, the engine won't complain.
So a little, a little buzzer does is the, is the actual quote.
All right.
Is it the first, we're moving on to the first of our brochure
questions, which I know you guys love.
Love.
Scott is a big brochure question guy.
Okay.
First one, the power of total control, the blank, the new blank,
blank, blank is a car of extremes, extreme performance,
extreme control, extreme beauty.
The last one's a bit of a, I don't know about that, but anyway,
this is a hatchback that looks fast as fast standing still as it
is when it's on the move engineered by blank and Lotus for the
ultimate.
David.
Proton.
Sattria.
Sattria.
A bit more.
GTI.
Yeah.
GTI.
The Lotus gives it away.
Well done.
Yeah.
Very good.
So yeah, some of the board one knew and, and still laments the
fact that he got rid of it.
People loved them.
Like they, they, they really did.
They were, they were a cool car.
The car is what awesome in them.
Yeah.
They're a cool thing.
They're a cool thing.
Next question.
Question number six.
There was plenty to talk about, sorry, there was plenty of talk
about Toyota bringing back the Toyota MR2 at the Tokyo, Tokyo
Auto Salon.
They did not, they did not do this as this did not happen.
Instead, they showed off what mid-engined vehicles.
Yeah.
I saw this.
It was like a massive laugh.
Yeah.
It was massive.
I don't know if it was, if they were trolling or if it was,
you know, it was something, but they, they released two.
It was, it was two of this, of this one particular car.
Well, it could be a car.
Who knows what it is.
Yeah.
Scott.
Scott.
Is it like a new van or something?
Toyota van.
I'll give you a point five, Scotty.
It is.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They come in, they come in a van body style as well.
I'll give you, I'll give you that.
They come in a van body style as well.
Jim.
Jim.
Was it a commercial?
It wasn't a commercial.
No.
Like, isn't it a commercial vehicle?
Or is it a commercial?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It is a commercial vehicle.
It will be considered commercial.
Yeah.
But it's, what, I'll give you, you know, hold that thought.
I might give you a point five if no one else can,
can tell me what it is, Jim.
We all out.
No idea.
Jim gets the point five.
Instead of showing off the new MR2,
which has been the worst kept secret in a long time from Toyota,
they really, they said we're releasing two mid-engined, you know,
sports, sports vehicles.
They showed off two modified Daihatsu hijats.
So that's what they did.
And everyone was just like, what?
Score check, David three, Robbie at the score,
Ed and Jim 1.5, Scotty on one.
Still anybody's game?
Anybody's game?
Question number seven.
The new Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC was announced this week.
It will not be sold, however, in, sorry,
Scott, did you?
Me, Rob.
Rob, Rob.
Supercharger.
It is coming up, but that is not the question, Rob.
I'm like, I'll be nice to you, Rob.
I'll give you a point five if you're guessing anyway.
So, so yeah, where are we?
Despite, so the new Mustang Dark Horse SC Supercharge
will not be sold in Australia,
despite having parts made here in Australia,
specifically for it.
What are the parts that are made for the Mustang Dark Horse SC?
Can I answer again?
Yes, you can.
Yeah, go.
Wheels?
Absolutely, Rob.
It is the wheels.
It is the carbon fiber wheels that are made in Australia.
Bonus question.
Where in Australia are they made?
Rob.
Rob.
Jalon is correct, Rob.
Well done.
They made it in a place in Jalon.
Absolutely.
Jeez, Rob's fighting back.
He's on the hunt.
Question number eight.
Here's one for you, Ed.
The Lexus IS badge.
Abbreviation.
What does IS mean?
Ed.
Ed.
Interstellar.
It does not, Ed.
It does not.
I really don't know.
Oh, David.
David.
Something sports.
Something sports is correct, so you get 0.5 for sports.
He's a very special vehicle.
He's very special.
All the IDF are driving them.
It's a good guess, Jim.
Individual.
Not individual, but good guess.
Is it intercontinental?
Another good guess, but that's incorrect.
I think everybody's had a go.
It's intelligent sports.
Made for the young.
It was dealt with towards the young tech savvy,
but sporty individual.
Yeah, that's dumb.
Very dumb.
Moving on to question number 10.
Number nine.
German car makers are apparently struggling
in which country as people seem to favour
their own built cars?
Ed.
Ed.
France.
Not in France, no.
China.
Absolutely.
They are struggling in China.
They're refusing to buy their cars at this point in time
because they'd rather buy their own.
So, score check leading into the last question.
Scotty won.
Jim and Ed.
Each.
Rob, 3.5.
And currently leading on 4.5 is David.
So, anybody's game if your name is Rob and David.
The last one is our second of two brochure questions.
Blank blank embodies driving exhilaration.
Based on the blanks all wheel control engineering philosophy,
blank blank combines engine performance with the quick
initiatives of the blank blank gearbox and an extensive
array of control technologies to create a vehicle that embodies
driving exhilaration.
The blank.
There's a lot of blanks in here.
An extensive array, extensive.
What are they?
Oh, we don't know, but they're extensive.
If I say any of these words, you'll get it right away.
Because I gave the last one where we were saying lotus.
So, the blank Sportback offers the latest high-performance
technology with all the benefits.
Ed.
Audi.
Incorrect.
In the benefits of a compact hatch while the blank sedan
adopts the same menacing stance as the blank blank
and displays a physical presence befitting of a powerful
high-performance machine.
Behind the wheel of both the Sportback and the sedan,
you've got...
There's an i30N.
There's an i30N.
Good guess, though.
Very good guess.
Behind the wheel of the Sportback and the sedan,
you'll experience a brilliant combination of power
and precision control with a turbocharged Myvec engine.
Delivering out 177 kilowatts of power.
David.
David.
Mitsubishi Lancer.
I need a bit more.
GS...
Raleighart.
Raleighart is correct.
Well done, David.
It is the magic of the way the Myvec...
Just waited for the Myvec.
God damn it.
Fun fact, there's a point to you, David.
Robom is born of these, Brandon.
Really?
He did.
They're cool things that sit back.
I do like them.
The VRX was even a quite...
a good-looking car with the siege alloys on them.
They were pretty nice.
But the Raleighart...
I think Nadine's got one, hasn't she?
Yes, true.
Yeah, a Raleighart.
It's not a Sportback.
I went in it the other day.
Well, did you?
Yeah.
They were selling for the same price
as the next R650 of anniversary turbo.
I think you made the better choice.
Yeah.
Just a little bit.
Just a little bit.
So, yes, well done.
Myvec gave it away.
If I would have said...
If I would have said any of the other words,
which...
Let's see if this would have given it away.
The Twin Clutch SST.
That would have given it away, I think.
SST, yeah.
I would have known exactly what that meant.
What else would have given it away?
AWC or Wheel Control System.
That's the thing that they used.
So, yeah, they used some different...
They used some words there
that you would have gotten.
But, yeah.
Score check, gentlemen.
So, David Prince is looking very smug right now.
Ed and Jim on 0.5.
Scotty on one.
Rob on 3.5.
And tonight's been on a grand total of 4.5.
Here's David Prince.
Well done.
Off to a good start for the end-of-year battle.
He is.
He's like, I'm one step closer to a steak dinner.
So, anyone you want to thank, David Prince?
I'd like to thank myself.
Ah, very good.
Very good.
I like Scott.
It's a work.
Looney all I know from Scotty.
Did he do you proud there, Scotty?
Both the way you said that?
That felt amazing.
It felt like it was a win for me.
All right.
Well, I think that's a podcast, gentlemen.
Let's get it some plugs.
Scotty's golf tip of the week.
Tip of the week is make the driver your best friend.
Okay?
You're not going to be able to hit straight all the time.
But if you can get some distance on it
and fairly good with it,
your next shot means that you're not hitting with a longer club,
a longer iron, which are harder to hit.
You'll be using like your sevens and eight irons,
which are easier to hit.
So that's your aim.
Make that driver your best buddy.
I've been listening to a podcast talking about John Daly
over the last few days.
He was a very funny individual.
He's awesome.
And he could drive a ball like you wouldn't believe.
This is a quote actually by someone far more famous than me.
I never lose.
I either win or learn.
So deep.
So deep.
So deep.
So deep.
Actually that was Nelson Mandela.
Yeah, mate.
If you're at the drags Friday, you would have lost.
Learn this.
Learn to buy a faster fucking car.
Yeah.
I definitely think the van drag race needs to happen.
I think that's going to happen.
So I can see you lining up Jim against Ed and Chad.
I think that would be fun.
Let's make that happen.
And if David ever wants to challenge the Fiesta in a three-cylinder battle,
I'm ready for you.
You should get Ying to come along in the Yaris Tour.
Yaris Tour.
Yeah, that'd be good.
I want to bring the blade too.
I want to give that a go.
Yeah, 100%.
Let's do it.
It'll be fun.
Yeah, yeah.
Rob, you've got to bring the XR Turbo down for a...
Hang on.
We're on the same race, aren't we?
Not the Mustang.
That's pretty avid.
That'll just do the Mustang sling into the barrier.
Jim's car taking.
Happy to drive your car distances.
Yeah, absolutely.
If your car needs a bit of exercise
or you're a bit worried it's being neglected,
then let me know and I can give it a bit of some exercise.
Yeah.
Stand this way, Jim's way.
Contact us.
He'll give it a good workout.
In the dealership network,
and you're looking for people to come and test drive cars.
Looking for a serial pest.
Can I get that on a t-shirt?
Serial pest?
That's nothing to call it.
Serial pest.
What was that, Rob?
A little video vlog while you test driving.
No one else is doing that, Rob.
That'd be original.

Gentlemen.
Oh, sorry.
Edward.
Edward's buy, swap and sell.
Well, all I've got is that Lexus IS 250.
But that's not quite ready for sale yet.
But it will be in the next week or so.
19,000.
19,100 original kilometers.
2014 registered IS 250 luxury.
Gentlemen.
As always, I'll see you next week.
Take it easy.
Bye.
