early in this new year, I'm putting all the pieces of it together. My whole vision for you
for 2026 is to put some money back in your wallet when it comes to vehicle ownership
and maintenance service and repairs, how to keep that vehicle on the road, whether it's
three years old, five years old, or 15 years old. Let me tell you, you can keep these vehicles as
long as you want if you're willing to sell out to preventative maintenance. And that's what I'm
going to teach you. I'm teaching you the fundamentals to put money back in your wallet so you can still
own that vehicle regardless of age or mileage. And don't think about what it's worth
sitting on the curb because that will mess your mind up. You know, my good friend,
one of my mentors who passed away just a couple of years ago, Willie Wooper, I miss him every
single day. And he would always say, you know, if we didn't know when we were born, how would we
know how old we are? Well, that's how I look at my own vehicles. I don't care what the mileage is,
and I don't care how old it is. What matters is, am I being a good caregiver? Am I doing
everything in my powers to make sure I treat this vehicle like it's the last one on the planet?
You got it? Anything else that anybody's telling you is nothing but lies, pack a lies,
smoke and hot lies, because mileage doesn't mean anything. Age doesn't mean anything. You can keep
that older vehicle as long as you want. And I hope many of you will take on the challenge
to be part of the 600,000 kilometer club. And our 07 Toyota FJ Cruiser is well on its way
to the 400k club. We're probably going to be there in the next year to 18 months.
But it ain't over yet. Oh, no. I'm going to make it. We will make it. Lord willing,
we will make it with that 07 Toyota FJ Cruiser to the 600,000 kilometer club.
Our 99 Honda Civic DX two door hatchback five speed with air blowing as cold as
cold as can be. Yeah, penguins pop out of the dash and that happens because of maintenance.
That's right. 319,000 K and still looking beautiful. Yeah, she's a sweetheart. We call her the rocket.
It's red. Red cars go faster. That's what I was told by a customer many years ago.
So we have lots of tips and maintenance saving tips coming at you for the next

a $1,000 raise or a $1,500 raise. I think it's safe for me to say for most of you
it's probably not true, right? Probably not true. So buckle up. We have episode four and I've made
a little change only because I was sitting around having a cup of coffee and thinking about this
morning's episode, this Saturday morning episode and I thought you know what we're kind of jumping
ahead a little too quick. So what I was thinking about was this episode would be breaking down the
cost, real world cost of when the rear brakes on your four-wheel disc brake system is completely
finished because of neglect, because of not understanding the rule of thumb when it comes
to preventative maintenance and having regular brake inspections and for you folks because I
know y'all drive so fast you know the road sign there on all the roadways is to you most of you
I think just a suggested speed limit. You're burning your brakes out, you're beating your car up
and it's no wonder that you know like every five years by the time you make that last payment
there's really nothing left to push, pull and drag to the dealership to trade the thing in.
Exactly. So this program is dedicated to those who want to know what do I got to do,
how do I got to do it to put money back in my pocket and stop burning vehicles out, stop
wasting money on unnecessary repairs, burning out the brakes, burning out the engine, blowing it up,
blowing up the transmission because that's what's going on out there and I have a lot of friends that
own repair shops and I was just talking to one of them by email this morning because my thoughts
kind of switched and today's episode is now going to be part four, episode part four in a series
or I could say series four but it's not it's series one and it's episode 57 but it's part
four, brake systems and what needs to be done, what needs to be done to keep money in your pocket.
The final episode is going to be brake systems real world repair costs so my good friend
owns a massive shop here in my hometown. The wonderful chap runs a very clean shop
and a very honest business. I asked him if he would put together a couple of estimates for me
and I gave him all the details I was looking for and I told him why and he said I'll get that done
for you, I'm back in the shop this morning. He said I'll be back in the shop Saturday morning,
I'll put that together for you and get it to you sometime Saturday so sometime today
I'll get those estimates. One of the estimates I've asked for was on a specific vehicle that
had no brakes left on it whatsoever back in the summer so if you sign up for our YouTube channel
you can go in and see what I dubbed the summer 2025 the brake nationals. It seemed that every
vehicle that came to us that needed our help had no brakes left just absolutely nothing to
salvage whatsoever and had those vehicles had only a repair shop to go to it would have broke the
bank I kid you not and so we were able to find the parts wholesale and the clients paid for their
parts and we put in all the labor at no cost in lieu of shooting videos and showing you the
viewers what's going on and is that your vehicle so I've asked my friend Bill to price out specifically
because there's thousands of these pickup trucks on the road the Dodge Ram 2500 series four-wheel
drive hemi hopefully it doesn't have the hemi tick this particular one did in fact a sad story
her and her husband her husband passed a couple years ago with this past March 2025
and he was a mechanic they bought this Dodge 2010 2500 brand spanking new 40,000 kilometers later
the hemi exploded it got the hemi tick and the motor was done at 40,000 kilometers
and it wasn't covered so they ended up they parked the vehicle for like six months looking for a
used engine finally one of the local wrecking yards here in town found one out in bc they shipped it in
and the vehicle was at about around 60,000 k she told me they managed to nurse the the dying hemi
to the point where it was it exploded it was finished at about 60 so they managed to get
limp it along for about another 20k knowing it was done anyway so they put another motor in it
and now the vehicle's at like 245 and the engine's going out again but the truck's in good shape it's
in really good shape so i asked my friend bill who owns the shop here in town to give us a full
parts and labor and tax estimate on that specific truck that i had to do the rear disc brakes were
just an absolute disaster the emergency brakes nonexistent everything rusted out corroded there
was nothing to save nothing not even the cables not even a screw or a spring and if you watch the
video on that truck on our youtube channel you'll see what i mean because i put all the parts of
my wheelbarrow and then i shot a video with it and the owner was actually starting standing
outside the camera frame as i'm telling you and explaining you what we're looking at i just
if you watch the video you'll look at the wheelbarrow full of parts and go
what the heck is that exactly that's what was left of just the rear brake so bill is giving us a
complete real world estimate to do the rear brake pads rear i'll say that in a minute try it again
rear brake pads disc brake rotors calipers both sides whatever you do to one side you do the other
side all brake hardware necessary hardware and the backing plates that hold the emergency brake
shoes all on and in position totally rotted off that was a component left of one it's one side
i actually use my tin snips to cut it off so i could get it out of the way and deal with it so
emergency brake hardware emergency brake cables left and right and also the parking brake shoes
emergency brake shoes so the full package so he's giving us a full detailed quote on that and then
i asked him to select an average everyday automobile that many people own with rear disc brakes
the same failure nothing salvageable so he's going to give us an estimate i said pick
pick whatever year or a vehicle but stay somewhere around 2018 2017 or 2019 so he's going to pick
an average popular vehicle and model year so an average popular make model year of vehicle with
four wheel disc brakes and there's nothing left of the rear disc brakes and the emergency brake
to give you an idea what that would cost on the average vehicle out there that you're driving
you maybe someone you know is driving so bill's going to do that for us so i thought you know what
it's worth the wait because i don't want to give you the numbers the parts and labor costs and the
reason that that popped in my head reminded me like when i bought vehicles off customers or customers
just left them for me to deal with and i resurrected them and turned them into
what i used to call my white swans ugly ducklings turned to white swans by the time i was finished
with it and i would send it off to my friend sam who had sam's auto center and get him to safety
it that way i was out of the loop so i didn't want anybody thinking you know i just signed a safety
check for it no i sent it out and i paid sam and he gave me an invoice that proved i paid him
to have the vehicle safety by him and or his staff somebody on his team so that's when i started
thinking if i give you guys a parts and labor cost you're going to look at me and possibly say
that i fudge factored the numbers and i thought no no no i'm gonna i'm gonna head off the armchair
warriors and cut the legs off of your rocking chair and knock you down and not give you an
opportunity to even have a chance to breathe that kind of nonsense at me because these are
going to be estimates from an automotive shop right here in town one of the biggest ones that we
have in town and it's well known and it has a fantastic reputation so that's who's doing it for us
so there won't be my numbers my parts my labor it'll be actual so what you're going to get a
chance to see on the motor mouth monday morning drive is actual numbers we're going to go through
the whole thing then i'm going to figure out how i can make those documents available to you so you
can you can download them yourself and look and read it and really get to know it so i'll figure
that out through somebody who can help me do that because i'm learning technology and you know
it sometimes it just feels like you're sucking on a fire hose okay let's jump right into the meat
of this episode break systems what needs to be done so based on the driving habits i see out there
on the roadways i don't drive like you guys i can't afford to i want to keep money in my pocket
just like the next guy and i am not willing to beat my vehicle into the ground just to keep up
with the joneses so to speak you know what i'm not interested in doing something just to impress
someone i don't even know and i know i may not even like it's my car my dime if you want to
ride on my butt and think i'm going to hammer down on the loud pedal just because you're you
know ain't gonna happen not today not tomorrow not next week you cannot intimidate me only dale
her earnhardt could do that senior the intimidator yeah we have a big picture of dale earnhardt in
the shop doing it for dale anyhow that doesn't affect me it's my car it's paid for and i i will
respect the laws and the rules of the road period because that's who i am it was a day i didn't
and i learned my lesson and maybe you have to as well slowed me right down one day i'll share that
with you slowed me right down you're not above the law folks so you get caught doing 30 40 k over
be prepared to not sit there and cry crocodile tears and say i didn't know i i i i didn't know
i'm not from this planet no you're gonna pay the piper just like i did in the day and i learned my
lesson you know what we we have to respect and obey the laws on the roadways and everywhere
and when we don't and you get caught
expect it to cost you something because it is it's going to cost you something
and that's a good segue into the brakes you can do whatever you want with your car
but if you're listening to my voice i'll teach you what i already know how to save a ton of money
have an older vehicle that's very reliable if i wanted to hop into the 99 Honda Civic and be in
Florida by tomorrow late afternoon i can fill it up and go exact i can fill it up and go i don't
need to get it down to the shop rush it in for this service that service check it over it's ready
to go at a moment's notice the fj the same way it's ready to go at a moment's notice
yeah if you had to grab your go bag and get out of dodge we're ready to go don't even need to gas it
up this time of year should always have your fuel tank full prevents fuel system what i call
bag and gag water ice crystals and now the temperature is rising again and then we're
going to drop down into the cooler temperatures that's when you develop ice crystals in the
fuel tank if you don't believe that e does not stand for enough exactly that's another conversation
where we're going to save you money so how do i help you with your brakes because that's where a
lot of money is spent you know you're out there driving the highways and byways getting up early
looking after the kids cooking meals cleaning the house this that and the other thing and hubby
better be jumping in there and doing something other than you know riding the big louge in front
of the 72 inch screen tv it is a it is a team effort to run the household just saying yeah fellas
if you want the uh if you want the thermometer to rise then you know what you need to help mama
so she can have a rest too yeah you're you know no one died and made you king period the household
is tough to run on your own it really is i know that i know exactly what that's like every minute
of every day is counted so you're out there both of you swinging hard making money banking what you
can and you know there's more month than money anything you can save is a bonus right mama
anything you can save is a bonus so you're out there trading time for money beating your cars up
driving way beyond the speed limit beating on them way too hard because when you play hard you pay
hard and and i see you out there and you're burning up breaks like big time why because for
some reason you got to fly past me and almost take the doors off my car so i'm sitting right on your
back bumper at the next traffic light i didn't see a trophy come out in a check because you beat me
there so what are you trying to prove that's my first thing send me a comment and tell me what
are you trying to prove by doing that jack rabbit starts and hammering on the brakes jack rabbit
starts hammer on the brakes every single day you're doing that so you're burning your brakes up
so this is what you have to do in order to save money i only need to do a full brake inspection
and a full service twice a year because i'm easy on my equipment if a vehicle sits more than it's
brakes are a tough thing to keep on the car because they rot off they seize up from sinning it's not
good for them but on the other end of the spectrum beating the tar out of them isn't good for them
either and then not doing a service so you're going to need to do a service you're ready for it
you're not going to like me or you're going to love me one or the other if you could talk to
a lot of the listeners that we've had for 31 years on the radio that followed me they've saved a ton
of money i got a whole drawer of emails saying thank you for putting me on the right track
saving a lot of money i saved a lot of money on that job yeah i can only tell you i can't
really show you at this point but yeah some of them you know really bring some tears to my eyes
but you got to do the work so you're going to have you are going to set your vehicle up for a
service a brake service once every four months and that isn't a a snakey lick a peekaboo through
the wheels a sniff and a walk away that's if i'm doing the job for you here's what it looks like
all wheels off everything open so i can see and then i'm going to take all the calipers off
review all the moving components and make sure that we don't have something that's seizing up
and burning out your brakes prematurely so i'm going to clean and lubricate all the moving
components all the way around and i'm also going to be making sure that you are using the parking
brake and if you're not using it i'm going to definitely tune you up at that point very nicely
that it is a must and if you're there i'll take you out to the shop and we do i love doing showing
show and tell bring ladies out because 85 of our clients were females were women the women bring
the cars in the guys i don't know what they're doing maybe they're at home ironing and cooking and
cleaning the house there's a hope right ladies yeah i'm going to pick on you guys a little bit
because you know what if you want the thermostat to turn up in your in your home then you need to
help mama yeah it's not an yep she works you work and if she's a stay-at-home mom she's working
she's working that house everything that needs to be done so you need to guys you need to jump in
there and help her out and she needs to be driving the best car in the house not the piece of crap
you know who you are because that's wrong because you know what when a vehicle breaks down and i saw
this with her own shop you know what our job at the shop on the helter mountain was to make sure
that our ladies did not have a vehicle that breaks down on them and it leaves them stranded and
vulnerable that's horrific fellas that's horrific yeah we can't have that happen we don't live in
the same world where we used to leave our doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition and nothing
happened ever we don't live in that world anymore so you need to make sure guys she has the best
vehicle in the household if you have two cars she's got the best of the best you drive the junk
because as a fella you can deal with it when it craps out mama no you don't want her on the side
of the road in a vulnerable position with the kids in the car whatever no so break jobs the brake
service is where the money is coming back to your wallet so every four months that car whether you
hear a sound in the brakes or feel something no that's not how it works that's not what we do
that's costing you money what's saving you money is you book it in before you even leave the shop
that's what i taught our customers they knew that that they we would book a meeting from a meeting
bam fam that's what we called it you got them on the roadmap for the next service and that
wouldn't usually include an oil change so you're booting these things down the highway hot and
heavy needs an oil change every four months none of this 16,000 32,000 50,000 kilometers are you
kidding me engines and transmissions are freaking out of this world to replace
so how we trained our clients was oil change every four months stay ahead of the curve keep the engine
clean and functioning and longevity comes along with that mileage means nothing so every four months
oil change in a full what we call the full service checking everything and staying ahead
of the repairs and maintenance doing a brake service and rotating the tires down the road it
goes see in four months bam just like that you do that as an sop standard operating procedure
you'll be shocked and odd how much how much money comes back in your pocket
and you won't be having to replace a vehicle over five six years
you'll be able to keep that thing like i do 2007 do the math what's the year yeah
it's got one year to go to be how old
right how old one more year yeah heading for 400,000 k i look after the body it gets it's
rust proofing annually keep keep ahead of the curve of the curve of the corrosion the rusties
the rest is serviceable and you can put on you're ready for this one
unlimited mileage if you follow my lead on that service every four months
book it in pre-book it for the oil change service tire rotation and a brake maintenance
and it won't break the bank what you spend to have that done
and have the vehicle checked for preventative maintenance make sure we stay ahead of the curve
anything that's going to try and throw us a curve ball we can be we're on it
well in advance so you don't end up coming in the vehicle coming in on a flat bed and
you're tied up for three four days before it can get fixed and back out the door
you're rolling our job at our own shop was to reduce our customer's vehicles down to
almost zero coming in on the back of a flat bed we don't have a crystal ball and a magic wand but
we worked hard to make sure our customers did not have their vehicle come in on a flat bed
and we didn't have comebacks either we did the job we did it well to the best of our ability
but if a part failed that we put on there's not much any of us could do about that because
again we don't have a crystal ball or a magic wand but that four month service is your SOP
your standard operating procedure to save you thousands of dollars in needless
unnecessary repairs so that's what i'm talking about if that
is palatable to you i just gave you the biggest nugget i could ever give anyone who is sick and
tired fed up disgusted and bored with having to buy a buy vehicles over and over again finance it
paying interest you're in in partnership with the bank and you know it's hard enough to make ends
meet if you were to sit with either tony mealy or larry tea troll our certified financial
planning professionals they'd look you in the eye and say best vehicle in the driveway is the one
that's paid for you treat it like it's the last car on the planet that's what you have that's the
mindset so that is what needs to be done with regards to the brakes oil change all of it can
be wrapped into that four month health check that's basically what it is it's a health check
of your automobile to make sure all systems are go nothing's creeping up on you that's going to
cost you all of a sudden you're going to have a really really large repair bill that can be avoided
by following this procedure and stick to it like a postage stamp till it gets there don't be concerned
about the age of the vehicle don't be concerned about the mileage of the vehicle be more concerned
about how you're taken care of it just imagine if a house was only good for three three years
60 000 k would that make sense to you you go well you know honey you know like three years or 60 000
k we got to pack up our gear and get out of dodge it's just you know what i can't wrap my head around
that if that's all you can give me on your car i don't need it i need it like i need another
hole in the head so coming up shortly we're going to make available for you we're looking at how we

maintenance and that'll save you even more money and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to
follow it the instruction sheet that comes along with the kit is like three lines that's it that's
simple i've created that maintenance schedule kit is what i developed when i was working
for a company we did nothing but um fleet maintenance could be five vehicles could be 1500
and we had to go over those vehicles with a fine tooth comb and do not heaven forbid miss one item
that could possibly tie that vehicle up on our needless repair stupid repair so that's how i
developed a checklist for myself in the shop so when i was going over a fleet maintenance vehicle
i didn't miss anything and so i decided to develop that into a maintenance kit so that no matter what
group you are just starting out new driver this is a great way mom and dads to get your kids
on board with taking care of the vehicle that they have whether you know i don't agree with
buying a vehicle for your kids never have because i used to see how the kids beat on that car and
expected mommy and daddy to pick up the tab so they'd be with their friends being little angels as
they're leaving the house but those little angels had dark wings if you know what i mean
when their friends are in the car and beating the thing to death and then oh here mom here's
the keys the car's not right something's wrong with it yeah yeah something's wrong with it my
brother was one of those i never got a chance to use a family car because my brother was drag racing
the family car and he broke two of them that was when my pop said if you think you're going to be
driving our car when you get your license think again not going to happen so i was okay i bought
my first car when i was 15 took a year i worked on it for a year and then i got my license and it
was my car i had the skin in the game it's my car my insurance my gas my fixing period so i hope you
get something out of this series and i hope you get some nuggets out of everything i share with you
because it comes from my heart you can do better you really can out there and save money you can
save a ton of money keeping that older car going as long as as i mentioned if it's not rotted out
and your butt's not hanging on the ground because it's still rusted out and you can climb in it
with all the with all the doors closed that's pretty much a non-winner right there that's pretty
much needs to go to the crusher but if you keep the body and the the structural integrity of the
vehicle intact you got a winner big time you do there's a lot of families out there that are in
need of vehicles under five grand that's their budget and there is not much out there if you
can find it because i can't find it usually what i end up going and looking at is it needs
thousands and thousands of dollars of fixing so it's not a five thousand dollar car it's five
