It's EV News, briefly.
Everything you need to know about today's news, but wrapped up in less than five minutes.
If you're really stuck with the time, let's get you up to speed.
Hyundai picked the Brussels Motor Show to show off their largest electric vehicle yet.
It's a pure battery version of their Staria MPV.
A people carrier.
They say that this is built for comfort, for flexibility, for families who want to move
either six or nine people around for fleets, airport transports, and school runs, and things like that.
It's a WLTP range of 250 miles, 400 kilometers, vehicle to load, digital key, load-to-drive resistance,
and the biggest Hyundai that they are selling yet.
Tesla are going bare bones with their Long Range Model Y for Europe.
We've been talking about the standard range vehicles with Tesla for a while, only a few days ago.
Talking about the Canadian version of the new standard Model Y.
But this is the standard Long Range rear wheel drive.
I know it's very specific specification, but it's rated at 657 kilometers, WLTP,
and it's the longest range and most efficient Model Y that we've had on sale so far in Europe.
It's very much stripped down, though.
Gone are any of the creature comforts that make Tesla more of a premium brand.
It has got the glass roof, but it's got a roof liner on the inside of it,
and you can't look through it because it hasn't got the coatings and things like that.
The ventilated seats are gone.
The heated rear seats are gone.
The rear passenger touchscreen is gone.
The vents are all manual.
Not the end of the world, if what you really want is just big range.
Congratulations to the Tesla team in China.
I'm always talking about how the China story really became central to Tesla all those years ago.
Shanghai has now built the five millionth electric drive unit, EDU,
which is the motor, the gearbox, the inverter, and everything associated with it.
Volkswagen have overtaken Tesla, though.
So we talk about how BYD just became the biggest EV maker in the world,
taking Tesla's crown, and congratulations to BYD, of course, for that,
but Volkswagen overtaking Tesla as well.
How can that be true?
Well, it's true if you strip out China.
If you look at the world of EVs sold in the rest of the world, but not China,
VW just sold 1.13 million EVs last year,
and Tesla less than a million.
VW bigger than Tesla.
We never thought we'd see the day.
Toyota is topping Japan in the EV charts for the very first time.
They make their top selling electric car, the BZ4X.
I should point out, by the way, EV sales in Japan kind of non-existent.
They have a one to two percent market share,
but it is still the first time that Toyota have ever topped the EV charts
in their home markets of Japan up against little things like K cars,
like Honda's N1E.
That's an electric mini vehicle.
That was in second place with about two and a half thousand units.
Like I say, not selling mega numbers.
Japan, what with the infrastructure and for various reasons, just hasn't gone
EV and is somewhat being left behind Portugal.
Don't want their drivers to be left behind.
They'll pay you 4,000 euros to switch to a battery electric car.
There are caveats, though, and some hoops to jump through.
You've got a scrap, an old, dirty combustion car.
So you've got until the middle of February to tap these new incentives.
They've happened around the world in their different guises.
Often pretty successful, not the perfect solution,
but it does get old vehicles off the road.
And finally, the Zika 7 GT,
otherwise known as the James Bond car, the 007,
but they can't call it that because I'm sure the owners of the Bond franchise,
which is Amazon these days, would have something to say about that.
So when it arrives in Europe and it's going to be called the 7 GT,
it arrives later this year.
And that is briefly.
That's why now I use Rocket Money to manage my subscriptions for me.
