with anything you got. Disagree. This is way off topic. No new stuff. Kate was watching some video on
YouTube one night. You know, it automatically plays and it was some something where like
this person was telling the other person that they had a crush on them
and then they followed up with that person, the initial person. She's like, yeah, I didn't end
up going out with him after I told him I liked him because he kind of loved bomb me and I'm like,
wait a minute, like you're the one that you can't come to somebody and be like I like you and
then be mad that they love bomb you. It's weird. See? That's my point. Like if I come to
you and go, hey, I have feelings for you and then you give me all those feelings back and
then I go, ooh, that's too much. That seems more like somebody wanted to be chased more
than they wanted to try. I think you're right. I just felt like a validation thing. Yeah. So, yeah.
There's more to that story, I'm sure. I think they're, again, I caught very little of it and we
clicked off it because it wasn't what we were looking to watch, but I was like, wait a minute.
So, yeah. I spent the weekend, went down to the RV fair just to kind of look around,
start looking around for some stuff and nice. Yeah, yeah. Those are always fun. I think
I may have found us a couple of guests. We'll have to see. I've got to work some stuff,
but it's interesting to, I just enjoyed doing it. Kate and I eventually want to airstream my parents
want all of us to buy a, what is it, like an overland vehicle, like a storyteller,
something like that. Right. And I told my parents, I was like, as the family,
if we want to buy something like that, great. And I said, then someday, God forbid,
in 30 years when you pass away, I'll trade it in for an airstream.
But it's interesting to see the technology. I mean, obviously great deals. I'm not here
to sell you an RV, but I was surprised. Like, and I'm sure everything's marked up so that they
mark it down. But, you know, it's, I don't an airstream tomorrow. I can't pull one, but
you pull a tiny one, a little Bambi, what do they call it? Fun? That's no fun.
No, you want like a 22 footer? You do. You do. I mean, yeah. So it's so nice. It's not as,
obviously those are two very different things as far as pulling low into those or taking,
you know, it's one of the Mercedes Sprinter vans off road. But yeah,
ran into a few people. Like I said, I've got a couple of people I'm reaching out to that
I think would be fun guess. Actually, some of the people from Storyteller. So working on that,
but that'd be fantastic. Yeah. Yeah. I'm sure Brandon and pals got some connections with
him. I know he does. I mean, I don't want to use him all the time. I mean, the man isn't
in Michael. I know between the two of them. They probably know anybody who's ever touched
anything with that's been off road. I agree. It's kind of like they probably taught them
how to be off road. So yeah, there's some new toys in that collection. Thanks to Michael.
They're not with Michael. They're with Brian. He really, if Brian has ventured
way out of his Chevy shell, I don't get it was funny because it was Mr. I'm going to put all the
miles on this truck. Then all of a sudden one day he was in the Chinese like, I need to stop
putting miles on this truck. Well, you doubled, you know, in a year. But yeah, he ended up
caught what he got a Monteiro Monteiro and a grand Cherokee like that were in the fleet
for SARS and search and rescue, search and rescue. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's fun to see
him in something different. Since it's always fun to see who use their vehicles,
drive other vehicles. He's different all of a sudden. He was talking about buying a Ford one
day like we talked about. Once you go Bronco Raptor, there's you just can't be off road off road.
And that's why I thought about it. I really did. I thought about just selling a kidney
when I got the Ranger Raptor, but it just didn't. If I didn't need to tow, I'd buy another one.
Yeah. In a heartbeat. It's just too much fun. And it's so much better off road than
anything we've judged. And it's fun on the street because it's got more than enough
power to get around. You know what it's like. It's the same engine and basically, you know,
Ranger Raptor 37. Great power, great everything, but it's just watching that gas gauge go down. Oh,
yeah. One thing that is funny because Brian Dallas messaged us today and it's something that I
knew that they were doing mule. I don't know if they're the first ones to do it, but they
locally actually might have been down in their Portland store. They put an extended range
tank on a Ranger Raptor, which a lot of people do obviously are on their off road vehicles
because the tank on my truck sucks. It's like 18 gallons or something. Same with the Bronco.
But it made me go out and look, and I've looked at them before, but in order for them to get that
36 gallon tank in there, it blocks so many little things that it gets really close to the rear
suspension to the point where I feel like if you ever had to service the rear suspension,
you might have an issue with that tank. I don't know. I'd be interested.
We know the guys from Mule. We should call them again. God, that was one of our first
interviews we did in my apartment in Delview. Yeah, fun. They're always good guests. They've
always got great stories and they've always got amazing projects. Kind of taken over the industry
too. Yeah, the least. I really wish that was something more manufacturers put more thought
into. Like the F-150 Raptor has a 34 gallon tank, 3435 somewhere in there,
and that's fantastic. I get on a bad day with a heavy foot. I'm still getting 450 miles of
a tank, which obviously to our listeners, that's not a lot out of 35 gallons, but that's a lot of
range. If it's not good mileage, it's still good range. That is really nice to have because I rarely
have to take fuel stops. I go on trips, I think that and small trucks just never have big enough
tanks ever. Well, obviously smaller trucks, smaller everything. Yeah, but like cram more
space in there. I mean, if you can fit 25 gallons in a Porsche GT3 RS, you can fit 25
gallons under an off-road vehicle in a truck. That's pretty much everybody
off for the endurance tank on the Porsches, and I don't know why they don't do it on trucks.
Well, obviously in some of the smaller trucks, and I think I'm sure some of them do, but they need
saddle tanks. That's the biggest issue is the fact that you put all this weight on one side of the
truck, especially on the Ranger, it runs right under the bed on one side. And there's part of
that. Like I was watching some of those videos of people that put those tanks in and like
they had to their suspension, they had to change the suspension down, not the geometry,
but like crank up the coils. Oh, yeah. Because she was sitting all of a sudden put 36 gallons on
one side of a truck. So yeah. Things you don't think of. No. Yeah. All right. Let's start Carter
Subaru tip of the week, please. Do you know what a map sensor actually is? It's a sensor for your
map. That's right. Just like when I was in... Indirectly? Indirectly, you are correct.
My family, I've told this story before, but I literally, the question in like seventh grade
something was like, what's the corn belt? And I said it's a belt of corn. I got that answer
wrong. My mother talks to me about that to this day. Apparently, that's not the right answer.
Make the Bible Belt more entertaining. It's a belt full of Bible.
No, it's a manifold absolute pressure sensor is what it's called map sensor. And that's,
well, when I say you're indirectly correct, it's because there's a lot to do with your fuel
mapping. Its primary role is to measure the absolute pressure, the pressure, that is,
the pressure as it compares to a vacuum inside the intake manifold. So once the data is collected,
it's sent to the engine control unit, the ECU, and which uses that information to figure out
the air's density, helping it determine the amount of fuel to inject and also adjust ignition
timing. So because what inside the manifold, there would be a vacuum because you'd be
sucking air in, you're not going to have that. Yeah, it's right behind your air intake.
And so, yeah, basically, if when your map sensor is going bad, it tends to,
it's, well, it just shows less vacuum. And then you can, it'll scrub all your fuel.
Yay. Yeah, you get terrible mileage. That's the first thing, unnoticeable power. There's
a reason your map sensor is so important and they have map sensor special cleaners for it.
It's like a contact cleaner. And it's not usually something you need to service,
but I bring it up because if you drive in really dusty conditions off-road a lot,
you don't change your air filter enough, driving to and from, this is dust, or if you don't change
your air filter enough and you're stuck in traffic all the time, soaking up everybody's
smog, that can gum up your map sensor. Interesting. So not math, map. I wasn't
good at that. I wasn't good at mapping. Not your mass air flow, your map. Man,
hold absolute pressure. So check into that. If you haven't looked at your map sensor for a while,
you've got an older vehicle. It's just one of the services people forget about. That's why I
brought it up. I was looking, an article popped a bunch of Loptic and I was like, oh yeah,
I forgot all about that. It's one of those things that I've had to service before in older
vehicles. We haven't talked about sense because you don't hear about it a lot, but
cars are expensive. Keeping them in good shape helps them be less expensive.
I'll tell you, we're talking about that at our house, like Kate's car is out of warranty now
and it's like, you know, she has a great car payment and I love the car, but it's like,
you start going, and it's a Subaru. Don't get me wrong. Unfortunately, it was not
bought at Carter, but I've always been one of those people. The before times.
PK as we call it, pre-K. I'm guessing her PN, pre-NIC. And I'm starting to look at it,
going okay, I'm looking at what can go wrong with these cars and like, is it cheaper to
go in and get a new car and just get something with a warranty and then just keep paying
on it or, you know, so. Yeah. That's a big question. Yeah. So that's a minefield of question.
The overall consensus is no, it's better to hold onto a car, pay it off and drive it until it dies.
Yeah. That's not nearly as much fun. Obviously, I'm a terrible example of that.
Also, she wants the new Forester hybrid. Oh, that's nice. Yeah, it's a nice vehicle.
You know, because I'm worried about this car breaking down, so I'm going to go get a car
that has more technology in it and hope that doesn't break down. If you're rolling them over,
I mean, then maybe it would make sense on a lease. Yeah. And that's, I don't know, I always say that
is a, it's a luxury. A lease is a luxury. Being able to roll over to a new car every
three or four years, you need to think of it more of a luxury than a, this is what people do,
because that's really what it is. You're losing money, no matter what. Oh yeah,
you're losing money anyway. That down payment and then, you know, mileage and if you get
kicked over mileage. So I have a funny story and I'm going to try to tell it very carefully,
because there's a term in there that I'm not sure if I can say or not. So you didn't say it. It's
a great way to think to repeat. Yeah, but I also feel like one of those people like, I didn't say
this, but no, I'm not going to say that word. I was out having, there's been a big debauchery
with the front parking sensor on my truck. One's gone bad and they tried to paint it several
times and it's not gone good. So I finally went down and they paint matched it. And as that truck
tends to do, even at a Ford dealership repair center, it attracts a lot of attention. I was
out talking to these guys and everybody's talking and going, Oh, this is what I want. This is what
I want. And this Hispanic gentleman came out and I, I emphasized the fact that this Hispanic
gentleman came out and said this, because I'm just crossing my T's and dotting my I's here.
Yeah. And I said, Whoa, what do you want? And he goes, Oh, you know, the classic,
you know, short bad, supercharged F 155 liter, you know, the basic Mexican GTR. And I said,
Excuse me. And just so we're clear, he knows who we are in a vaunce and everything. So
not saying any names. But and I go, What? He goes, Yeah, you know, the Mexican GTR. And I go,
and he knows what he's doing to me because I'm struggling because it's like, I was like,
Well, that's not a word I can say. He looks at me goes, It's okay. I'm Hispanic. I can
say it. He goes, You've never heard of that? And I go, No. So I looked it up. It is a thing.
It is a it is a phrase that is said throughout the world. My internet and my phone didn't
shut down and, you know, report me to anybody. But basically, it's any short bed or short box.
What's the short bed? Short bed. No, it's short bed, but short cab. Oh, a single cab,
five liter supercharged all wheel drive. He's like, That's the that's the Mexican version
of the GTR. And I was like, Oh, okay. I was like, you probably should have said that. Absolutely.
I was like, I might want to take one of those over a real GTR. So I was laughing hysterically.
The body guy that was standing there knew exactly what this gentleman was doing to me by saying
we had we had the long conversations about a vaunce and things like that. And he goes,
and so I was like, I'm sharing that. He goes, Oh, please do. I took home my GTR 11 years ago
today. Oh, wow. Today. That's the joke I saw Sean about. I was like, I used to be cool.
That but you took it home or today is the day 11 years ago when you got you accidentally bid
on it on eBay and then went to bed. No, that was, that would have been like a week ago.
Oh, okay. Yeah. Today was the day it went home with me. I picked it up from cats.
If you don't know that story, Dan. Yeah, I was, I was looking at GTRs and I was,
I was going to buy a GTR. I was like, already ready to go. And I was trying to find the right one.
And I found this one on eBay of all places. And it was like, man, this is a really nice,
clean 2013 premium black on black, black cars at the time. It was only a couple of years old.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So a couple of years old. And it was a really great price. And so
I did one of those classic, I'm going to throw a low offer at it and see what happens.
And I woke up and I won the bid. And I was like, half excited, half scared of what did
I just do? Yeah. Then I realized, and I did not know this at the time that the car was in Linwood.
It was a cat. This is how I met Roy. Okay. And I, well, I had been there before,
but I hadn't met Roy. I had just been the cats and like looked around and,
you know, drooled over the cars there. And yeah. So that's how I got my GTRs. I literally
lobed all the bid on eBay at the time because, you know, pre cars and bids,
pre bring a trailer, all that. And I wanted GTR back then. Did you have to pay eBay?
Or did you just go to Roy? No, no. Um, you do the, it was through the seller,
but then we basically, it was a long time ago. So we basically sort of unwound the deal from eBay.
Ah, yeah. And I bought it locally. I get it. Okay. Well, you kind of go, I don't want this.
I'm sorry. Yeah. Okay. Got it. Okay. Fair enough. So that's smart. That saved you some cash.
It saved you some cash. Yeah. Yeah. Which I was happy to do. I was like, I didn't,
I did not even know the car was local. I knew it was like, because I limited
to US searches. And I was like, if it's in the US, I don't care where it is. I'll
just go get it. Yeah. Because it was under warranty. Still under factory warranty.
That was the main thing I was looking for. I was only looking for cars that were full bumper to
bumper, everything warranty. Was it a local car when it was bought? I don't think so.
Oh, okay. Yeah. No, it wasn't. No, it wasn't. I'm not going to do this. And there will be
a reason why because there's nothing in my bank account right now. But the end knows why.
But I, uh, I've been looking at dual sports again heavily and, and, and going, okay.
Like, and I'm laughing because I want, I want another 450 C, uh, RL. I love that bike.
I absolutely loved it. I might be able to help you out. No, no, we'll talk after the show. No,
I got some ideas. No, it's a good idea. Do you remember that thing I walked in earlier
today and said, we are all buying this? Yes. A lot of my cash went out the door.
I understand. Okay. I got you. That's not, oh God. No, no, no, no. I should not have told
you this. Most expensive friendship I have. This has nothing to do with cars, but we were laughing
because, uh, Kate was over here and we were talking and we realized that, uh, that both
Shauna and Kate are going to be gone for Valentine's Day. You and I are each other's
Valentine's Day with the dogs. I'm really looking forward to it. Kate goes, we're
going to take the dogs. I said, oh, the rooms with the rotating beds, they don't
let you have dogs. It's right. So, yeah. Yeah. Um, an interesting article actually was
sent to me by my wife. Uh, the fact that 600,000 people in Washington state have expired tabs
right now that they know of. That they know of. Now, if you don't know, we talked about this. I,
I joked. I didn't actually mean to do it, but I kind of did it during COVID. I,
I forgot to put tabs on my car for like two and a half years because life, I don't,
which is funny because you'd think I would have bought a bunch of time to go through the mail
and figure out what I hadn't done, but, um, it's a thing. Obviously, if you know,
living in the Seattle area, uh, there's the RTA tax, which can really take, uh, tabs and things
like that. Uh, and so much so that we only shopped out of the RTA zone when buying the house.
Yep. That was a deal breakers. We're not paying more taxes this place than we have to.
That's why I live out here as well. Um, so I mean, and you're talking a comparison of the
fact that like on my brand new truck tabs were 75 bucks. If I had lived in,
in town, it probably would have been six to $800 for tabs. Oh yeah. Yeah. Oh yeah. I know. Yeah.
Yeah. When we looked at, yeah, between the trailer, the two bikes, the R8, the Bronco,
and the F-150 Raptor, you can imagine how big that bill is. And right now, for all, it's funny,
right now the motorcycles is the same cost to me as the R8 in tabs. They're the exact same
price. That actually pisses me off because I got a bill for one of the monkey and they
want $80 for the tabs on the monkey and I was like, I take that back. Both of the bikes have expired
tabs. I'm not putting tabs on the bikes. You're right. I thought about that. I think I actually,
I actually, I put tabs on the, on the Grom before we went to Moab because if we got pulled over,
I, in the back. Yeah. If we do trips out of state, I just put them on, but like,
yeah, trust me, we are not, we're not the target on a monkey in a Grom. I do carry
full insurance. Yeah. Oh yeah. But yeah, it brings up a good topic though because
it's a poor tax and it's in Washington's talking about making it worse. Yeah. And the fact,
if you get caught, they're going to find you, but you brought up a good point that the fine
is probably going to be less than putting tabs on your car. A lot less in a lot of cases.
Whole lot less, $240. I think it's the maximum. I think I let mine go. I'm usually pretty
good about it because it's cheap enough out here on the cars, but I forgot about it one
time for six months or something. I literally just forgot about it. I was like, oh, I need
tabs. I went out one day, I was washing the truck. I was like, oh, I need tabs.
I think it was on the GMC. No, it wasn't the GMC. I only had less than a year.
It was there. It was the older one. I also hate that because if you don't know that,
if you forget six months and then, so if you're supposed to do it in June and you do it in
December and you get tabs in December, the next time you have to get tabs is June again.
Right. No matter what. So, yeah, I've had, in fact, I had that situation when I went in
to get tabs for the cross track in the time, the lady looked at me and she goes,
if I were you, I would wait, wink, wink, a month and buy your tabs. She goes,
or I can sell them to you now and you still have to buy them again another month. And I was like,
thank you. Same thing on the trailer. So, I didn't drive the trailer much.
You don't spend a lot of time behind the back of the trailer either.
Yeah. So, yeah. So, I didn't look at it. I didn't realize they were expired and then I went
to go renew them and they were, I found out the same thing. They were due again in like
a month. She was like, I'm like, I'm not hauling anything for that time period. She's like,
yeah, I just come back in a month then, on a big deal. But yeah, it's not something they really
focus on. We're already severely understaffed in police here. In the cities, it's one thing,
I think what's going to happen is they're just going to go to automated ticket scanning,
which is just, you know, Big Brother will do the tickets.
Yeah. But how do you prove that this just goes to the parking ticket?
Well, they're cracking down on that too with expired tabs. They're going to start ticketing
cars that are parked. Yeah. That's what I mean. It's just going to go to the
automated drive-by scans. Here's your ticket in the mail kind of thing.
No, but I'm saying they're going to, if you don't have tabs on a car that's parked,
they're also going to give you a ticket and find it.

But I mean, like if I was in downtown Seattle or something again,
or back in Kirkland in that RTA zone, that would be insanely expensive to get tabs.
And it has, I don't know, it's not that checked as long as you keep it in the state,
but I don't see how raising the tab prices is going to improve it.
I mean, nobody wanted these expensive tabs anyway.
I would assume they would start with a fix-it ticket.
I would hope that they go, hey, your tabs are expired, you know, get this fixed.
Because again, adding insult to injury, like you said for a poor tax,
is not the way to get things done.

There was a really nice, really nice 80 series that was built, ready to roll for about 20 grand.

And so I was checking out some other ones and outside of those insanely rare,
completely original, I only drove it 1000 miles ones that I don't actually ever want

That's become much more obtainable.

Don't get me wrong, but 20 grand for a nice bill 80 series is a good starting point.
For 20 grand, you could buy one and do the engine swap that it needs.
And so, because they were severely underpowered.
I'm not, it's a reliable engine.
It's a terrible engine for power and mileage.
It gets terrible mileage.
It's underpowered.
And it's really not that great compared to like a LS swap.
There's a million LS swap kits.
Anyway, that's part of the equation.
So yeah, stuff like that.

And there was a couple of, I saw a couple of K trucks, like really, really clean ones.
Don't get me started.

They're still, they're holding well at a reasonable range.

I mean, the car market is in limbo right now.
I mean, you're looking at the electric cars going away.
Where are we going to go?
What do people want?
Will we start seeing some of these new type K cars
coming into the United States, the small stuff?
My hopes are still high for Scout.
I know you don't like it because of what they did with the name,
but the idea of what they're doing, I do like.
Of the range extender the generator built on.
So you basically are adding fuel just like a car,
but it's power.
It's just charging the motors.
So that's giving you 500 plus miles of range.
And a solid rear axle with a locker front and rear, true lockers.
So there's a lot of electric motors.
Yeah. How do you have a lock?
So it's not really a locker.
It's just turning on both motors.
Yes. All at once though.
Okay.
So it's, but it's functioning as a full locker.
I see.
It's not being throttled by the computer.
It's just like turning as you turn.
Okay.
Yeah. So it's the rear.
Yes. A true locker.
The front acting as an actual locker.
So in its electric way, but exactly as you said,
both motors turning on at the exact same time,
putting out the exact same amount of power.
So like functioning as a true locked system.
And that is really good as we have experienced in Moab,
where you can finally take a vehicle like that
because you'll have the range and you just keep adding fuel to it.
So you're not going to sit there and just charge.
You can, which is great because you can do,
you could go fill it up with fuel in your generator,
then goes to the charger and be well in your way.
A lot faster.
I'm just saying if they wanted to pivot a little bit,
make a huge two-door scout that had a giant Ford V8 in the front of it,
I would be fine with that.
Or a supercharged 5-0 Coyote.
That's even better.
That's the vehicle we all want.
Yes.
That would be the Bronco Raptor R.
That, you know, there's a lot of talk about that.
And even the stupid people out there talking
about a Ranger Raptor R, which we don't need.
Somebody already did it.
Raptor are all the things.
Somebody already put the Coyote in the Ranger Raptor
and it was stupid fast.
What do you think, okay, outside of Scout,
is there a car that's missed the mark?
The Prelude is what brings this to mind.
Because if you just put a better engine in the Prelude,
it could be front-wheel drive
because the Prelude always has been front-wheel drive.
If they just put a Civic SIR engine in it,
didn't make it hybrid and gave it a manual,
it would probably be a really great car.
It'd probably be $50,000,
but at least then it would justify the price tag.
Because it would be basically a new Integra Type R
and it's, you know, in a heavier Prelude chassis.
But that's fine.
The Prelude's always been heavier than the Integra.
It's the grand touring sport front-wheel drive.
I feel like BMW and Mercedes are missing the mark
continually on all their cars.
Yeah, the M2 is the only appealing BMW to me.
M2, like M3, M4, fine.
But like everything else that BMW is doing
and Mercedes as well, I can combine that.
Mercedes is really off the mark.
I'm going to say this.
If people weren't buying their vans
and turning them into overland vehicles,
I don't know how Mercedes would be doing.
I'm happy with Audi, obviously, I think.
But they're still missing the mark on some of their stuff.
I just don't know.
I think so many of these car companies were being
redictating what cars they were coming out
by the regulations that the government
and said state or country or village,
whatever was was was throwing down.
A lot of those things have now gone away
or people have gone, we can't do that.
We need to have this normal stuff.
But I just, I'm not seeing,
like when you think about a sexy car,
and I'm taking BMW, that E30 M3
is one of the most beautiful cars on the road.
And the car was built around that engine.
It was fast for its time.
It served a purpose.
And now there's just so much technology.
And we talked about that too.
Going back to real buttons, tactile buttons
and having that.
It was funny because our good friend Steve Theodore
from Rumble Auto had a car.
And it was like an 80 to six, it wasn't an M6,
but it had like the old school click buttons
and the calculator that BMW,
if you know old school 80s BMWs, they had calculators.
Well, they were the mileage calculators.
But stuff like that, those cars were built to be driven.
And I feel like so many of these cars,
and we need those are the commuter cars.
But there's not a lot of fun cars out there.
Now obviously Chevy's with the Corvette
and we might get a Viper again.
I might get a manual Corvette.
If that rumor is true, that's going to be pretty amazing.
Chevy's really killing it as far as the Corvettes.
Ford's killing it pretty much across the board.
If you're not a Ford fan, I understand.

what they've got on paper is what drivers want.
You can still get a manual Mustang with a ton of horsepower.

because that is a lot of car.
And for the money, it's still a great deal.

It's going to be a diesel.

like a Grenadier.
It's going to have manual crank windows,
but it'll have AC, no screen.

which is a throwback.

Like, yeah, but that's got power everything hybrid.
But that being said,
I think the Land Cruiser in Japan
has rolled down windows.

And that's what we want is I want the non-hybrid diesel manual.
Just give me AC and a single-din stereo

that I can swap out, that I can play and,
you know, connect via MP3 and just have my phone.
I'll take a day to screw it.

for the times I need any electronics.
They're all on my phone.
Give me one of those.
I'll get one of those old-school tape mounts
that goes in with the wire that comes out.
And I will plug it into a Sony Walkman CD player.
So here's the question.
This is what, I came back to this
because I remember there was the transition time
that was actually really good.
When I had my C606, I put a stereo in it.
And the only thing it had was Bluetooth audio.
It had a screen and it had a DVD thing.
I didn't care about it.
All I wanted was something that did MP3.
That was it.
I didn't want carplay.
I didn't want anything else.
And all I had was my phone mount.
On my dash.
And that was enough.
Yeah.
And I loved that car had the perfect amount of options for me.
And I go back to it, even with cars like the R8 next to me
or my C706, it was really kind of poor implementation.
You always had a slow,
like this goes back to the whole thing of having,
you had a slow infotainment system to deal with.
It worked fine in the C7,
but there was always little bugs
with any company in their infotainment.
Not just Chevy.
Chevy Ford, Aston Martin, everybody.
My favorite thing about the C7
infotainment system was when the screen went down
and you could have that pouch behind there.

That was, yeah.
Yeah.

You can put things in there.

And so I was wondering,

or disprove in the fact that just put,
put that on the website.

I think there's a lot of us that,
that want to take the technology out of the cars.
I like being able to hit a button and it locks,
but there is some,
if you've never gotten out of a vehicle
and locked your hubs, like.

There's just, the mechanicalism just was wonderful.

I think there's enough people out there.
Obviously, is there enough out there to,
because they're putting less into the car,
which means that the car should cost them less.
Even if they gave us all the simplicity
and charges the same price
and they are, they're making money
and we know it,
you're, you're providing that to the consumer.
I think what I really want
is the simplified drivetrain
and the simplified infotainment.
I still really love power windows,
power door locks and heated seat.
I don't care if it's power seat at all.
This one, once I'm set,
I don't really care.
It's actually quick to move a manual seat.
But they do, I do like those features.
Power windows, power door locks and AC.
And the heated seats.
I don't use half the crap in my infotainments.
I don't use any of it.
It, it, where I use it is when,
when I click the off road buttons,
it brings up stuff.
That's fine.
But my point is,
Those could be switches.
I don't, yeah, they could be switches.
But my point is,
it shows me on the screen
that it's locked kind of thing.
But I mean, yeah.
So you can just be an idiot.
Like I'm saying,
I don't even necessarily need Bluetooth.
As long as I have the,
well, I guess my phone doesn't have a stereo jack.
And you can use USB-C to it.
Okay, I guess you could.
But that's what I mean.
All I would need is a single bin.
And that would just be
with dolphins from Pioneer.

They,
the options to have stereos in your car,
not just loud.
Like, they weren't about loud.
They, I mean, to a point,
they weren't like the U.S. loud,
but they were all about having the technology in there.
And it was crazy to see all the animations
and things like that.
Yeah, but you look back on,
like, some of the classic Porsche's BMWs,
they had like the single din Alpine,
some of the high end Alpines,
those were,
and they sounded great.
Don't get me wrong,
the days of when the screen would come out
and fold up,
and then it would hit your,
your climate control buttons,
then go back in.
Yeah.
So, if you know, you know.
Yeah.
So.
Oh, it's funny.
I think simplicity,
I think this world could use some simplicity.
I, I, I do.
Well, I just think what we need is,
I think the demand is there for long-term durability.
Yeah.
I think it's coming back a little bit.
And I don't think it's just our generation.
I think generations are realizing
that it really sucks
not to have anything you can hold on to.
Yeah.
Everything just breaks.
And it's, it's, you know,
obsolescence by design.
And which is a very real thing
that is not a conspiracy theory at all.
They have,
all your appliances are made cheaper
so that they break
and don't last as long
so you replace them.
That's why your refrigerator
has a freaking web connection.
That's why your phone stops working
when the new one comes out.
Yeah.
And it intentionally slows down.
Yeah.
Things like that.
They bloat apps.
I got my tinfoil hat on.
Yeah.
But I believe it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Planned obsolescence is a real thing.
And it's especially painful with cars though.
That's why you get things like
plastic oil drain plugs
and plastic,
you know,
oil pans and parts that,
that, you know,
plastic water pump impellers,
things like that,
that eventually,
you know,
even the fluids,
they are bathed in
or what eat them.
That is not a good design.
Ironic.
Right.
And so I think that
there's a huge demand for that.
I was,
I've been,
of course,
I've been following
Daniel with Golden Rovers
and he's been going
through his engine series.
Still, he's,
every week he puts out a video
about the process of
pulling the engine,
putting in the new one.
And he said something that
made me think he's like,
it's a shame
that people will throw away
such a nice vehicle
because the engine goes bad
when it's really not
that hard of a swap.
It is like,
if you watch the video series,
everything he has done
to make it easy
is amazing.
So ever since we blew up,
yeah, cruiser,
what,
2019, something like that.
Yeah.
But like the,
the details he goes through
about the wiring harness,
picking the right starter
so that it can be clocked
in the right way,
picking the right plug wires,
the right headers,
like everything he,
he builds,
like, I wish I had the skill for.
Let's put it that way.
Yeah.
He built,
exactly I wanted to say it.
He builds like,
I wish I had the skill for it
because he thinks of things
I don't.
And then I'm like,
oh, yes,
that's a very logical way
to do that.
And it makes perfect sense
for longevity.
And so I love seeing that
because it's keeping cars
on the road.
We were talking about this
in the last episode about
rebuilt titles
and salvaged titles.
It's keeping cars on the road
because this is a perfect example.
You get a car like that,
any Range Rover
that's, you know,
60 days old
that's going to break down
and never drive again
or be in the shop
for the rest of its life.
But if you rip the
really shitty engine out of it
and you throw in a really
bulletproof LS,
that's super serviceable
and has been
because it's based on the same
design for the last
80 years,
literally.
It's virtually the same mention.
There's a reason for that.
Yeah.
They got it right the first
time and they just kept
making it a little better
incrementally over time,
but it still uses push rods
and it's still a single low
cam and just a basic V8.
And it works really well,
but it also gets double the
mileage is double the horsepower
and the torque
is super simple to work on.
Everything is serviceable.
You're napping a parking lot.
Simplicity.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so it got me thinking,
it's like, man, this is,
it's really
de complex.
And what's the word
if it's de complexify an engine?
That's not a word.
I just made that up.
It makes sense though.
Yeah.
So I feel it's funny.
I feel like the word simplify
is overly simplistic
of what he's doing.
I think but simple
and he's run into all those things
and he knows all those things
because he's run into those problems.
He's put in the wrong starter
and realized what you need
to make it work
and make it clock right.
He's put in the wrong plugs.
Things he's,
he's a tinkerer.
Always has been.
And that's what makes.
Yeah.
That's what makes the kit so good.
So yeah, it's funny
because I don't really
have an interest to.
I would do the
Land Cruiser with the LS swap
because and that's just
my preference,
the solid axle front,
solid axle rear.
It's not because the
the Land Cruiser I actually
think is more reliable.
It is for the record.
It's a lot more
put in the range over.
But I think
that's that's where I want to go
with it.
I want to get rid of the stuff
and keep it simple.
And that's
it keeps you drawing me back
to that 80 series.
Joe Rogan had one built by
keep it simple stupid.
Yeah, keep it simple stupid
by icon four wheel drive.
He had one of the first ones
that was one of the
just one of the cleanest.
He has all the best cars.
Yeah, he does.
And one of the cleanest
LS swap Land Cruisers.
And I love it because the car
looks timelessly
just like a Land Cruiser.
It looks and then if you get
inside and you go through all
all the things that icon did
and granted this is a 200 plus
thousand dollar
80 series Land Cruiser.
This is this is no screw
unturned not painted.
He goes through it.
There's a really good
it's an old video now
but you go through it
the design of the vehicle
and they go through everything
they fixed and everything
they touched up and you're like
that's perfect.
It's perfect because
it's durable.
It's perfect because
it's not overdone.
That's it's so expensive
because they didn't
overdo anything.
They just made everything
bulletproof.
Made reliable.
So that you didn't have
like you said things.
Everything is throw away now
because they want you
to buy the next thing.
Yeah.
So capitalism man.
Yeah.
Or whatever.
Yeah.
All right.
We're going to get off
our apple boxes now.
We're not won't be as tall
but so yeah.
What it's a questions

What vehicle is has needs
one change
and it's perfect.

is one change away.
We're like they just
didn't do this thing

And it's obvious
they didn't do right.
Everybody knows it was
obvious.
The prelude being
they picked the wrong
engine and drivetrain
for what could have been
a great car.
And the wrong price point.
Right.
But I mean like I said
you know if you put a
the Civic SIR engine
in there in a manual
he would be like
greatest thing Honda's
put out in you know
since the last NSX.
Great.
Yeah.
It would people would be
every magazine
would be praising it
ever.
People would be anxious
to buy it
even if it was a little
overpriced
who would be like
yeah but it's
everything I want.
It's it's my
take or type R
of this generation.
Yeah.
It's even though it's
not it'd be heavier
but at the same time
people would be thinking
it was really cool.
Nissan finally got it
right.
The new the new Nismo Z
gets the manual now
which is very cool.
So shout out to
Nissan for doing
something right for the
first three 70
or whatever it is now
the 400 it's a 400 now.

for doing something
right for the first
time since the GTR.
They can stay around.

Bring back stereo dolphins! We think there's a market for simplified vehicles that will outlast you with proper maintenance, and we think diesel, non-hybrid, trucks with no built-in infotainment, and manual options would be just the thing. Doug DeMuro disagrees, but do you? It turns out about 1/2 a million Washington drivers have expired tabs. In a surprise to no one living in the area of constantly increasing taxes and costs, more drivers than ever are skipping tab renewals. We often forget the tabs on our motorcycles and trailers, but what about you? Did you hear this episode then suddenly realize your tabs are still from 2021? Living in that RTA zone and it just doesn't make sense to renew them for you? Tesla pulls the plug on the Model S and Model X; is it a sign of decreasing demand for EVs?
