The Ford Torino is an older Ford car that many people remember from the muscle-car era. In this segment, it’s brought up as a car from the speaker’s past.
Racing stripes are decorative stripes applied to a vehicle’s body, often associated with motorsport styling. They can visually emphasize speed and performance even when they’re purely cosmetic. In this segment, they’re part of the “good looking” look the speakers are praising.
“Wood grain down the sides” refers to faux wood trim used on some classic American cars and wagons. It was a popular styling feature that aimed to give the vehicle a more upscale, traditional look. In the transcript, it’s used to describe the Country Squire-style appearance.
“Fake wood stuff” is the speaker’s description of faux wood-grain exterior trim, commonly seen on older station wagons. It’s purely cosmetic, but it was used to create a premium, classic vibe. The mention ties into the earlier discussion of the Country Squire’s wood-grain styling.
A better interest rate means lower financing cost over the life of the loan. In this segment, the host ties the improved rate to the buyer being a college graduate, implying eligibility for a special financing program.
The Toyota Highlander is being mentioned as a consistently strong choice among SUVs in the same size category. The host frames it as “always great,” suggesting it’s a reliable, sensible alternative when shopping this segment.
They’re talking about a new Subaru called the Trail Seeker (2026). The big point here is that it’s fun to drive and it’s built to handle rougher roads too.
EyeSight is Subaru’s safety technology that uses cameras to help the car watch what’s happening ahead. It can assist with things like avoiding crashes and helping with driving on the highway.
They’re talking about how high the car sits. If it sits higher, it can be easier to climb in and out, and you usually get better sightlines down the road.
“Drown out” refers to how the sound of a gasoline engine can mask other cabin noises. With EVs, that masking effect is reduced, so engineers often focus on insulation, tire noise reduction, and aerodynamic refinement.
Electric cars don’t have an engine running, so they don’t make the usual engine noise. Because of that, you may hear more road noise and outside sounds than you would in a gas car.
Road noise is the sound transmitted from tires and the road surface into the cabin. EVs often highlight road noise more because they lack engine vibration and exhaust noise, so tire choice and sound insulation matter.
The Ford Bronco Sport is a smaller Ford SUV/crossover that people often consider instead of the Escape. The speaker says it’s generally reliable and gets good gas mileage, but it’s not the same as the bigger Bronco.
Hyundai is the car company being talked about here. They showed a concept vehicle that looks a lot like the Bronco, which is why people are noticing it.
A concept car is basically a “preview” vehicle shown at events. It’s used to show what a company might build next, and in this case it looks like it’s copying the Bronco’s style.
Kia is the brand that’s being discussed as launching a new pickup truck. They’re trying to figure out how big it will be and what kind of truck it will compete with.
Headlight glare is when headlights are too bright or aimed wrong and bother other drivers. It can make it harder to see at night and can increase the risk of crashes.
AAA is a well-known organization that helps drivers and publishes safety information. In this segment, they’re reporting survey results about how people feel about headlight glare.
LED headlights are a type of headlight that uses small electronic lights. They can be really bright, and if they’re aimed wrong they can bother other drivers.
A Ford Pinto is a small older Ford from the late 1970s. The speaker is saying theirs had a small engine and a manual transmission, and it was cheap to drive day to day. It’s basically a story about how affordable it felt to own.
The Ford Explorer is Ford’s midsize SUV, and the 2015 model year is part of the generation that many owners remember for being more “car-like” than earlier body-on-frame designs. In the transcript, it’s described as an XLT with about 110,000 miles and no mechanical issues so far. That frames the discussion around long-term ownership and maintenance.
Flat-towing is when you tow a car with its wheels still on the road. Some cars need special settings so the transmission and drivetrain aren’t harmed while being pulled.

we're talking today.
The question of the day is what's the worst car you ever owned.
And I'd love to hear your stories.
It's a lot of fun to hear about how bad cars used to be.
800-926-7777.
Todd Chambliss is here.
Yes I am and I guess my entry into that question of the day
would be the 83 Chevy Chevette.
And you have to say it that way.
The Chevette because it was a disappointment.
Well at that point I was driving a 74 Ford Maverick before that
and for a couple of years and got tired of having to go and spray
the carburetor and try to crank it up every morning on a cold morning.
So I opted for a used Chevette and well that was a tin can on four wheels.
But you know it was what it was.
The Maverick.
Wow.
Yeah on the Ford Maverick.
Yeah that was when I broke into the car business when we had stellar
products like the Pinto and the Maverick and the Granada.
Oh yes the Granada.
Yes and the Torino.
Oh.
Remember the Torino.
I do remember the Torino.
Wow.
Some good times back then.
Yep it was it actually kind of was.
Yeah it really was.
I'd say the one I loved though that I would sneak off the lot and go drive.
Yeah what's that.
When I wasn't supposed to be the Ford Ranchero.
The Ranchero I haven't thought about that car in years.
It was the competition to the El Camino and they made a Ranchero GT
and you could get a 460 VA in it.
Wow.
And that thing was a runner.
That's a good looking car man.
Oh yeah they were.
Got racing stripes on the side and different colored hood and the vent up there.
Yeah that's good stuff.
Yep you could get a you could get a Ranchero
Squire with wood grain down the sides.
Why would you do that.
I don't know.
I don't understand it.
I really don't get it.
We had that fake wood stuff on the the Buick estate I believe that we talked about in the
other show that we had.
The Buick estate wagon.
My parents had a country squire wagon.
We were a Ford family.
So there you go.
There you are.
Let's talk to Bill in Cyprus Texas that's in the Houston area.
Hello Bill what can I do for you.
Hey good afternoon Jerry.
Hey there.
A few questions from my son.
He's graduating college.
Got a job lined up in June.
Great.
He's got a great credit score under 800.
He had he has had work experience you know but this is his first full-time job.
Yeah.
But he was looking for like an explorer.
Is that the second size down.
And actually yeah you got the expedition is the biggest one and then you got to explore.
Explore.
Yeah.
That's what he was looking at.
And I told him definitely go see Jorge at Tom Ball Ford.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
He had helped me out with getting I have a business.
So he got my loan interest rate reduced by two points because back then they were going
for 10 percent.
Oh wow.
Not buying 80 percent.
So he low he anyway I walked out and he definitely worked out a deal with me.
But okay you think he's going to have a problem with finance.
Absolutely not.
Ford's got a really good they got two good programs and and one of them is the first
time by our program and one of them is the college grad program.
The college grad program will be the better one of the two.
Does he live with you Bill.
He'll be living with me or his mother.
But yeah he'll be okay.
Let's say yes for you.
And the reason is the owner loyalty rebates right now.
If he's in your household he'll he'll qualify for that owner loyalty rebate which I think
is either thirty five hundred or four thousand.
There's more money for because he's got because he's a college grad that'll also
give him a better interest rate.
Yeah he'd be great for the Explorer.
And it's one of my favorites.
I've reviewed SUVs then there's a bunch of good choices in that size.
The Highlanders always great.
He wants it decked out but not the top of the line because I don't really get the price up there.
Yeah it does.
But I tell you for value when you look at the incentives that Ford keeps on the Explorer
you look at what you get for the money.
I don't think there's a better buy out there.
And I say that every time I review one the last one I had was a I had one in twenty twenty five.
It's on my website under car reviews.
You can put in Explorer and it'll pull right up.
But yeah I think that's the way to go.
And of course Jorge will take great care of you there.
What about extended warranty.
I get them.
They're pricey too.
If I know yeah but Jorge can help you with that too.
My dealers.
Yeah I got one I bought I'd use twenty twenty two pick up for them.
And I didn't want to get the warranty but I'm glad I did because transmission.
Well there you go.
Make yourself right there.
That's what I say.
One claim with the cost of repairs today.
One claim and you'll pay for the entire warranty.
If I know I'm keeping a car I'll always buy one.
Now if I'm leasing a car and I'm only going to keep it three years or less.
I don't buy them because you're under warranty that whole time.
But if I'm going to keep a car doggone right I'm going to buy an extended warranty.
And again Jorge will help you with that.
I appreciate the call Bill.
Your son will be in great hands with him.
Eight hundred nine two six seventy seven seventy seven.
The number one clicked on story in yesterday's free newsletter.
Was my review of the twenty twenty seven Chevy Corvette.
Holy cow what a what a great week I had with the Corvette.
Now this week I've had the new twenty twenty six Subaru Trail Seeker.
The Trail Seeker.
All one word.
Brand new entry from Subaru.
It's a game changing electric vehicle.
I didn't think I'd hear you say all those words together in one sentence.
I didn't I'll say it again.
It's a game changing electric vehicle.
And when we come back I'll tell you why it's a game changer.
The car pro Jerry Reynolds knows things you just can't know.
So call it on the chase dot com car pro listener line one eight hundred nine two six seventy seven seventy seven.
Well sitting in the garage of the retail my ride dot com studios would be the latest car
that Jerry is driving this week to review.
It is the twenty twenty six Subaru Trail Seeker.
And as Jerry mentioned just a few minutes ago game changer I think the word you use.
Yes it is.
And I'll tell you why.
It is such an enjoyable vehicle to drive.
Now if if you're a Subaru fan like I am you know you get the symmetrical all wheel drive
one of the best all wheel drive systems out there.
I recommend Subaru's for the eyesight safety system which you get in this all electric Subaru.
It's about the size of the outback.
It's it's similar in size and shape to the outback.
It's got eight and a half inches of ground clearance which is great if you're going off road.
But it's also great for getting in and out of the vehicle.
So how do they navigate that if it's eight and a half inches.
Does that seem kind of high to you since you're trying to clear some of the low clearance to get
off road.
Well that's I mean that's.
Or is it just the middle somewhere.
Yeah I mean it that's that's a little on the high side.
But for most people as we age you know setting up higher is actually easier to get in and out of
than setting low because you you kind of have to climb out and then you sort of fall in if a car's
sitting low to the ground.
That's true.
This one this one's setting eight and a half inches up.
The other beautiful thing is the visibility that you get when a car sets up like this.
You can see further down the road.
This car's got glass all the way around it.
The visibility is exceptional 280 miles of range and it's really doing it.
But the best thing is we finally have an EV that has price parity with a gas vehicle.
So if you look at an outback that's equipped the way this trail seeker is built it's all
electric.
They're about the same price.
That's crazy.
This nicely equipped Subaru is forty one grand on the sticker.
Man.
And that's before any discounts any incentives anything like that.
So and it'll tow thirty five hundred pounds.
Really.
Yeah roomy.
But I cannot over describe what a pleasurable driving vehicle this is.
And quiet too.
It is amazingly quiet.
I don't know what they did.
This is a problem that electric cars have is because there's no engine noise to drown out.
Road noise and the other outside elements electric cars people think they're loud inside.
This one is whisper quiet.
That's amazing.
It is.
I love this thing.
Let's put that on the list for the next time I'm trading up at forty grand.
If you're going electric.
There's nothing to compare.
Man.
That's a heck of a deal.
I wish the seventy five hundred federal money was still around.
This thing really be.
They'd be clearing those things out like crazy.
Subaru waited a long time but they did it right.
Tim and Houston you're up next on the car pro show.
Hello Tim.
What could I do for you.
Hey how you doing.
Hey doing good.
Good man.
You bet bell.
Well a good question.
I'm a baller a mile away from the Ford dealership to look at the Broncos sport.
They've got some some good deals on the twenty five.
In twenty five has they overcome the problems and is that a good buy for me.
Yeah I think it is.
I don't know of any problems of late.
Got off to a little bit of a rocky start but that was several years ago.
This this vehicle the Broncos sport is taking the place of the escape which I always loved.
But fuel economy is good.
Reliability seems to be real good on the later model ones.
I really don't know of anything to tell you on the negative side unless it's not big enough.
And you know and the only issue I've ever had with the Broncos sport was I wish Ford had named
it something else because people buy the Broncos sport thinking they're getting the Broncos
or something similar and it's nowhere near the same vehicle not even close but whatever.
Right right and nobody asked me so I you know look I've helped a ton of people get Broncos
sports and they all love them and especially the fuel economy.
So I don't you know I don't know of anything to tell you bad about it.
Everybody seems to be super pleased with it.
Is the dealer you're going to on my list of certified dealers.
I don't know we're going to Joe Myers.
Nope they're not.
So when you get there and you in the games start go to car pro dot com and find the one
my dealer that's closest to you.
Don't put up with any crap.
If you bought a car you thought you'd love but now you want to push it off a cliff.

Chris in Montgomery Texas welcome.
Chris how can I help you.
Hey good afternoon gentlemen.
Hey there.
I wanted to I guess offer my candidate for one of the worst cars a person might have owned.
Yes please.
I made the mistake of trading in my perfectly good and reliable 1970 VW Beetle for a 72 Vega GT.
Oh no did you really.
Oh I did and I guess I didn't do my due diligence but you know the undersized radiator just couldn't
keep it cool and with no steel liners in the block you know the oil consumption got to you
know a quart in less than 500 miles.
Whoa yeah and of course they had I lived in the rust belt southeast Texas or southeast Michigan
sorry area.
So needless to say I had corrosion issues but I think the final insult was when I went back
in about three years later I wanted to trade it in on another different Chevrolet and I couldn't
find a dealer that would take the car and trade.
They said they would take it off my hands but with no exchange of cash.
That makes you feel good doesn't it.
Oh sure it does wow yeah those old aluminum those old aluminum blocks only cow did they
give trouble warped heads all kinds of issues.
I mean it just was a bad bad car man and you're not alone.
I had callers in the earlier show in Dallas talking about their Vega too and I haven't
found anybody that had a good experience with that.
I appreciate the call Chris that was that's that's good memories not for me not for you
but definitely not for him.
You know it was a good looking car too.
It kind of was a cool looking car.
Yeah it was the one he had the GT that was a really fun car.
And the until it wasn't until it wasn't in the earlier show the winner I swear was some
portion guy that had Dennis he had a you go.
And if you if you never got to drive one of those boy are you missing out man.
You can't get good advice from someone who doesn't really have a lot of experience.

and welcome back to the car pro show jerry Reynolds is the car pro I'm Todd chambliss the
old road master as I've been dubbed yes and uh you know I'm getting used to that name now it's
taken a little while I'm not sure I'm ready to buy a t-shirt or a cap to commemorate that but
it's a slowly starting to sink in one of the most clicked items this week in the newsletter of
course my wife is a big fan of the bronco that's a vehicle she normally drives around she's in
my car on a trip this week and I'm in her car this time I've been able to enjoy the the bronco
outer banks and it's it's been it's been an interesting little ride and I when you were saying
when we were off the air that you couldn't tell on me aren't you the bronco sport was kind of
girly to you seem kind of girly and so what are you driving today I'm driving the bronco
not the sport I'm driving the bronco the regular bronco but what color of the letters on the back
well she likes pink and I'm driving a vehicle with the pink front letters on the grill for
bronco and you got the nerve to call a bronco sport girly well it seems like that's a problem
of logic doesn't it seems like it's a little bit of a leak yeah you should go into politics
maybe there's a future there talk out of both sides of your mouth that's it do as I say not as I
do well I bring all this up because the bronco is one of the most clicked items has to do with the
bronco it's not directly the Hyundai apparently at a car show in New York unveiled a concept
where they are looking to clone the bronco there's a picture right here the boulder I guess it is
it it looks just like the vehicle I'm driving right now yeah it does it's I when I glanced at that
when I saw it I'm scouring one of the automotive websites and I I mean my first thought was there's
a bronco yeah and then I saw Hyundai mm-hmm yeah we'll sit down for this one okay what because
subscribers to the newsletter next week are going to be able to see a new pickup coming to America
from Kia Kia doing a pickup Kia pickup and it's a full framed pickup not not a
not like a small truck not like a little bit small truck I don't know it's hard to tell what size it is
but I gotta think it's it's at least like f-150 years no probably not probably closer to the
okay maybe the Toyota Tacoma considering it's a full frame truck chassis you gotta figure it's
going to be bigger than say the Maverick or you know the Santa Cruz for Monday just to
never imagine that Kia and truck were going to be actually part of the show today I would not have
imagined that or even even thought that might that'll be interesting yes it will Joe in Stafford
Texas welcome Joe what can I help you with Joe are you there in Stafford Texas they'll be shy Joe
all right maybe his phone's on mute or he set it down we'll come back to him in just a moment
and we'll go to Bruce in Lubbock Bruce welcome to the show
okay I just thought I would mention my worst car ever well tell me about it
okay and understand I'm an antique but when I started to college my dad
um we had a deal there was going to be a college trip to Europe the next year and I could take the
trip or have a car the first year and I figured I was going to be studying my full head off anyway
yeah halfway through the year and found out that was an arc only and I'm sort of a hard science
type I got you so dad said well let's let's get your car however dad did not drive small cars
he drove uh prestige or semi prestige cars which he needed to professionally and he had just worn out
or he thought it worn out his 1960 Lincoln and that this great car did take and had four
mufflers took a new one every month so he decided it would be cheaper if he sent me off in a compact
car okay the first GM uh rear engine air cooled car was a 60 Corvair
a Corvair yeah and he swapped even for that for me and it had no air condition
fairly plain on the inside and of course a standard two-speed automatic transmission
sure uh kept having trouble with it took it to school at the start of the second semester
by the time I managed to limp at home for spring break it needed a new engine
good you're out riding it no I'm not now I understand of course this was a five-year-old car
sure then I took it then I was in summer school that summer so I was having a little trouble with
it at the end of the first semester our mechanic friend looked over just sort of mentioned today
and I think you got a lemon and by the time I got home from eight weeks of summer school
and I was driving a couple of hundred miles home
you know once a month at most the thing was putting white smoke out the back
and it hadn't blown the second engine the one that went in yeah so they found one
from a 63 Corvair they put in and supposed to have a much more reliable engine but at this point
dad was looking at $50 a month to keep an engine in the car and he could hire the people he was
hiring for his professional office he was paying $140 to $160 a month so that went up pretty good
oh man and I remember the Corvair I apologize we got to move along but I remember the Corvair
and I remember when Ralph Nader killed that car I mean he told you may not know the story but Ralph
Nader wrote a book unsafe at any speed I've heard of that it was about the Corvair and it just
absolutely put an end to that car I don't know I don't know personally whether he Ralph Nader was
right or wrong I never I never quite figured it out and I never drove or you know I was too young
for that era of Corvair but I remember seeing them later on and the one thing that I remember
was if you came up behind the Corvair the entire rear rear end of the car was covered in oil
is that right it was a rear engine car okay and it blew oil out constantly every single one of them
had oil all over the rear end that can't be safe Bruce thank you for joining us today and thanks

well it is survey from AAA featured in this week's newsletter concerning headlight glare
apparently you know with the LED lights and the fact that headlight glare it's been a problem for
a while driving at night three out of four in this survey say it's gotten worse over time
with the interesting thing about this is that they say while headlight glare is causing a problem
people are complaining about this safety has kind of improved at night because of the brighter
lights right you got to find that sweet spot apparently is the issue right yeah it is and
with vehicles being taller and setting up higher and then in Texas we don't have a state inspection
law anymore so there's no adjust people aren't getting their headlights adjusted like they used
to here this is a this is a problem I wrote about this about a month ago and all of a sudden after
that all these articles start popping up including AAA. Isn't that interesting yeah what a coincidence
they read the newsletter too apparently yeah I think they probably do I don't know we'll see
all right next up is Will in Dickinson Texas Will welcome how can I help you sir
hey good morning fellas how y'all doing hey we're doing good brother what's up
well good hey real quick I couldn't help it here you guys talking about the
the Pentos and the Granadas my first car in in 1986 was a 79 Ford Pinto
yellow with a four-speed the four-cylinder and I remember the thing I remember out that car is
I could fill it up for 10 bucks yeah and then my and then real quick before my question my first
hot rod was a 77 Ford Granada Ghia had a four-speed on the floor with a 302 oh my
goodness on the road but man it sure would run I'll tell you I had a 79 my very first
demonstrator I got when I went in the car business 1979 Granada Ghia blew with a white
half vinyl top oh yeah pretty car sure enough yes sir well so we um I've got my wife drives
a 2015 Ford Explorer we've got about 110,000 miles on it probably one of the best cars I've ever
owned yeah it's just been it's an XL it's an XLT it's got the three five six cylinder in it yep um
so we're I just don't see the point at this I just don't see the need to get a new vehicle
at this point I mean is am I am I overthinking it by saying man it should be nice to be in
something a little newer you know not really I haven't had any mechanical issues with it
and you won't at least for a while I mean you got a 10 year old vehicle that you're driving 11,000
miles a year I mean that is amazing that is awesome and if you've done the maintenance on it
that thing should be just exceptional up to 150,000 miles and maybe past that I wouldn't push it
much I wouldn't push it much much past that if it were me because you want to maximize
the value when you either sell it yourself or you want to go trade it in and you can you can
you can keep a car too long but man with miles like that I don't I don't I agree with you it's
nice to have a new car and the Explorer today is a completely different vehicle than the one you
have it's on the truck chassis it's rear wheel drive now it's more enjoyable now but it's also
$50,000 now yeah that's the truth compared to 30 I think we paid 32 33 for this and look 50s the
love side you can go in the 60s so easy so yeah it's nice to have a new car but it's also nice
to have a good car with no payment no payment so yeah well we dolly we dolly tow we live full
time in a motor coach and we dolly tow up behind us we travel in the summer oh nice so that's the
reason it so it's you know rear wheels are down but I looked at flat-towing it but it was you know
you just leave the transmission a neutral there was too many too many variables flat-towing it
yeah you can you can run into you can run into issues if you don't do things just right doing
a dingy tow I appreciate the call well thank you for the stories about the pinto and keep that
Explorer when you're ready let me know and I'll help you get a new Explorer at a great dealership
buying a new vehicle can either be like Christmas or like performing a root canal on yourself ouch

About this episode
Jerry Reynolds and Todd Chambliss field calls on the worst cars they’ve owned, then pivot to practical buying advice. Listeners share Chevettes, Vegas, Pintos, and Corvairs gone wrong, while others discuss smart upgrades like Ford’s Explorer for a college grad and whether to buy extended warranties. A major highlight is Jerry’s review of the 2026 Subaru TrailSeeker EV—quiet, roomy, 280-mile range, and priced close to a similarly equipped Outback. The show also touches on headlight glare trends and dealership service wins.
