What can I do for you?
Hi, so my wife has a 2014 forerunner that I bought used for her in 2018, got a good deal
on it.
It's now got 225,000 miles on it, runs perfectly, never haven't had any problems with it in
very good shape, but it's reaching the point where I'm starting to think, it's got a lot
of miles and she drives alone a lot.
So I'm not in a hurry.
The car's fine and I don't want to pay a top dollar to buy that guy's 14,000 mile car
that talked earlier.
So I'm wondering how can I go about finding something that's a good deal over, you know,
over the next, you know, six months or so.
So because that's what I want.
I want to deal.
And about what year are you going to be looking at when you start looking?
About four years old.
I don't like turbos.
I don't like 10 speed automatics.
I don't like giant LCD screens.
That's why we switched from Ford to Toyota in 2018.
Well, you can't go wrong with the forerunner.
That's fact.
It's probably one of the, if not the most reliable SUVs ever made.
And look, it's there's no secret to the to the vehicle.
It's stayed the same for a very long time.
So the newer ones, as they aged and they kept coming, you know, it's it's not full
of, you know, it's not full of technology and it's a pretty simple vehicle.
And that's probably one of the reasons it goes so well.
So the way to get a deal on one is just keep looking.
And I would I would subscribe to you that I personally use auto trader.
And you can set all kind of parameters there and then have it email you
when one shows up that fits your parameters.
You can get as specific as color, as miles, as price, whatever you want.
You can get it there at auto trader.
The only thing I would tell you is don't limit your miles to 25 miles
from your zip code, open, open it up to 300 miles and and look when something
pops up and says, here you go, we found one that fits your criteria.
And then take a look at it.
You'll get a feel for pricing really quick.
Now, I will tell you that typically when a all new vehicle comes out
like the new forerunner, then the old ones drop in value.
We have seen the opposite of that so far.
Because people like people who know that old one, people that had that
particular era of a forerunner knows how good a vehicle they have.
And they want another one that they're like you in many ways.
They don't want to they want to go to a forerunner.
They don't want a turbo.
You know, they don't care about bells and whistles.
They're looking for good, solid transportation that is fun to drive
and it looks good.
It's exactly why people buy forers.
So if I were to get a Lexus, what's the last year of a V8 GX?
Oh, 20.
Twenty twenty one, I think now I'd have to look that up.
That's a great Google question.
Do they do they require premium fuel or is it one of the one of those
you can run regular?
It would. Yeah, it would do fine on regular.
Todd, you had you had a what year was your GX?
Do you remember?
Uh, so I think that yeah, it was a twenty twenty or twenty twenty one.
Either way, yeah, and it was the V8.
And yeah, yeah, I mean, it was a flawless vehicle.
When the best rides I've ever had in my life, I loved it.
It just I was ready for more bells and whistles.
And that was kind of the issue.
That was the issue, Dave.
Todd, Todd, the bells and whistles guy.
I like the gadgets.
He loves gadgets.
Let's see, you were looking for less screen and less stuff in there.
And this would be a perfect choice for you.
Yeah, the GX is is real basic.
I mean, it didn't change for over a decade.
It's a great choice.
And and that's one now that's a little opposite scenario
than what we talked about with the forerunner.
The new GX has been sold out essentially since the day it started.
So the old GX's did take a drop in value.

Recently in the car pro newsletter,
Jerry wrote an article about some of the car dealer advertising laws
and the bait and switch pricing schemes and all that kind of thing.
And it was very informative.
And it's kind of funny how interesting how you wrote that.
And that was not that long ago, like in the last month.
Right. It was two weeks.
Two weeks ago.
And now here's the news that you shared in the newsletter
that the Federal Trade Commission has sent warning letters
to 97 dealer groups about the same thing.
That's a lot of dealers too.
97 dealer groups that could be hundreds of dealers.
So are these are these linked?
Do you think the FTC has been listening to the car pro show?
Well, I don't know.
I reached out to them and offered help to them.
And then this came out.
Could be a little connection.
Well, but that's given the government a lot of credit for moving quickly.
Well, there's that, although, you know, it's if there's some fraud
or whatever going on there, they're looking to find it.
So here's the thing.
Don't make Jerry mad.
And don't certainly don't go and try to go and mess with his listeners either.
No.
Because that's where he gets into, you know, full pit bull mode
and he starts taking care of business.
But I get mad at dealers that advertise deceptively
because people fall for it.
And in the good dealers like on our show, don't get a chance to sell that car.
And people.
Good grief.
They get in there and they don't find out for a long time that it's a bad deal
or that they're not getting the price that they think they're getting.
And then it's too late.
They don't want to start over somewhere else.
So they buy the car and reward bad behavior.
Exactly.
It's too deep in the deal and you just worn out and you're just ready to get it over.

In fact, a truck is even tougher.
But long story short is I learned how to drive on this.
You're going to laugh at this.
I don't know if you know what this car is.
A Mazda B2000.

That was one ugly car, man.

But you know what, it ran like the wind.
It was a four speed and I woke up in the morning and I illegally drove to the DPS
and got my driver's license.
So I think 15 years old and regardless of all that, I need your guidance.
I don't like driving an automatic.
I like something big, but I want something with a manual transmission.
Any guidance you have for me?
Are you just performance mean anything to you?
No, sir.
I'm not looking for performance.
I'm looking for just that thing we had in the 70s, you know, in the 80s where, you know,
a manual shift just meant driving.
So I don't know if that makes sense to you.
And I apologize.
You hear some horns honking.
I'm sitting in the Bucky's parking lot in Maryland.
Bucky's my favorite place.
Look at the Acura Integra and the Type S.
It's not, I wouldn't put it in the performance category.
It's not an economy car by any stretch, but it's probably the biggest
without going to a BMW M4, which is a performance car.
No, I understand that.
I don't appreciate the German cars.
I'm not looking for performance.
I'm just looking for a nice, smooth manual transmission to enjoy just driving to work,
getting home, you know, just it's so hard to find.
I know.
Two choices, the Integra and the Toyota GR.
It's available in the Supra.
It's available in a manual this year.
And if you want to go with an enjoyable SUV,
you can get the Ford Bronco in a manual.
It's fun to drive.
It's a fun one.
Is it naturally aspirated?
I don't like the almost turbo non-engine.
No, it's not.
It's a 2.3.
It's a 2.3 liter four cylinder turbo, but it's a good one.
I wouldn't be worried about that.
But those are the only things that come to mind, my friend.
I wish I had a magic answer for you, but that's it.

And a crew cab with a six and a half foot bed with a camping
shell that's all white with a brush guard and a heavy duty
bumper and step bumpers.
Anyway, long story short, I can't get anybody to give me a
decent price on what it's actually worth.
Well, I got 256,000 miles off.
Which is nothing for that engine.
I mean, greatest diesel ever made.
Ford almost put me out of business in 2003
when they went to the sixth leader.
God, I lost so many customers over that.
That's a great consignment.
That's a great consignment vehicle, Joe.
That's one where you need somebody that understands what
you got and will ask the money for it and knows where to market it.
And that's what this company that I use, that's part of my show,

First of all, there's a list of the fastest and slowest selling used cars.
According to new data from IC cars, they took a one to five year
used car sales and did all the comparisons there.
You can go and check that list out, of course, in the newsletter.
They do good work there.
That's you use them pretty often too.
I do.
I love what they do.
And I was kind of surprised by the slowest selling used car for February
for a Volvo CX-60 hybrid.
Yeah.
Okay.
Is there something up with that?
A lot of people, I mean, Volvos, you know, I like them, but...
I think they're cool, but...
A lot of people don't.
And then there's the 10 most stolen vehicles in the U.S., according to the NICB,
the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
There's the top 10 metro areas by total vehicle thefts as well.
I guess I'm not surprised by that.
L.A., New York, Chicago, and Houston, number four.
DFW and the top 10, number six.
And then there's the top 10 states by total vehicle thefts.
Other things to look at too.

I'm looking for a pickup with three doors instead of four.
We don't need that many doors.
And I don't know if they ever make it anymore.
No, they don't.
They're all four doors now.
Now, some of the trucks have two regular doors
and two smaller doors.
But the three-door Ford used to build one.
It was called a Super Cab.
And you could open the back door on the driver's side.
And it was a little small door.
But no, there's no three doors anymore.
You're going to have to get that extra door
and just not use it.
Okay, what about a two-door pickup?
Yeah, there's two-door pickup still.
There's regular cab trucks out there.
Usually, they're plain Jane trucks.
And if that's okay with you, yeah, you'll find them out there.
Chevrolet still makes a regular cab.
Ford makes a regular cab.
You can get a two-door.
So is that like a fleet pickup?
Usually.
Yeah, usually, yes.
But not always.
Now, if you wanted more stuff on it
and you just wanted a regular cab, you can order it.
And it'll take a little while to get it.
But you can get exactly what you want that way.
It sounds like that would be the best thing for you,
to be honest with you.

are the two that you can order?
Yeah, you can order either one.

I'm doing fine.

I'll answer my own question.
Hey, so what I'm going to do is I am retired,
just recently retired, and I plan on traveling the country for a while.
So I'm going to buy an RV, a small RV,
probably about 2,000 pounds most, I guess, or 2,500.
And I'm just wondering, I'm not a car guy,
so I'm not very good at this.
And so I'm hearing both different ways about diesel
or not diesel, what's best for traveling mountains
and just all the conditions of the United States.
Yeah, and you'll talk to a lot of different people
that will give you different answers.
For me, unless you're getting up into a large trailer,
the extra cost of a diesel and the extra maintenance
that's got to be done is not worth it.
So I would go, if I were you, tell me again,
how big you think the trailer's going to be?
I'm just looking at something small.
So I've looked at 21, 20 feet, 24 feet.
I'm trying to say smaller, 2,000 pounds, 2,500 pounds.
No, they're going to be a lot more than that, buddy.
If you go 21 to 24 feet, you're going to be up in the
5,000 pound range, which is okay.
Any truck will do that nowadays.
Any truck will do that.
They're all now gasoline engines.
They're rated for anywhere from 9,000 to 13,000 pounds.
And you can't go back too far
because there's been a huge change in the past five years
on what trucks will tow.
So for instance, you're looking for a used truck.
You go back to a 21 or a 22 model.
F-150, Silverado, Sierra, Tundra, Ram, it don't matter.
A small V8 will tow easily 7,500 pounds.
And it'll do it in the mountains as well.
So you're going to spend, if you look at a half ton diesel,
a half ton gas engine, and then you look at a three-quarter ton diesel engine,
you're talking about a difference there of $10,000 or so.
And it's just overkill.
Will that diesel last longer?
Yeah, it will.
But do you need it?
No, you don't.
I personally, for towing, I like the 3.5 liter EcoBoost.
Engine from Ford.
Twin turbos, so you got the power when you're going up a mountain,
but you're not using gas, you're not using great amounts of gas when you're towing regularly.
Now, with that said, no truck gets good gas mileage when you're towing 5,000 or 6,000 pounds.
But it's better than most.
So I'd look at the 3.5 EcoBoost from Ford or the 5.3 from General Motors,
the 5.7 Hemi from Aram, and in the Tundra, the 5.7 V8.
Any of those used will do a great job.
Even if you trade the trailer later, if you go bigger, and a lot of people do,
you're still going to be good up to 9,000 pounds or more.
I don't know, okay, I see, I see.
I'm going to stay, I just want to stay with Ford.
I'm a Ford guy.
Okay.
So I've got an F-150 right now.
And I can probably even use that, but it's getting a little bit older.
I'm just going to give that to a friend of mine and just get something used.
Actually, I was listening to what you were saying to Joe just before me about how great
that truck is that he had.
What year was that?
97?
97, yeah, so that's not going to be good.
It's a three-quarter ton.
This is a three-quarter ton diesel.
You're going to seriously hurt your ride quality when you go to a three-quarter ton.
So when you're not towing, you're going to be miserable.
So if you like Fords, get a 3.5 EcoBoost.
I would not get to 2.7.
I would get to 3.5.
And I got great Ford dealers there near you at my website, my friends.
If you wonder whether an electric car is right for you, talk to the car pro about it.

So entertainment rating this week in the newsletter from Jerry and his stories.
They're called true stories from a former car dealer.
And this is number five, the time that Jerry goes into work on a Monday, gets a fax back
when he got faxes and had a letterhead from NBC, a Peacock logo.
It was from Dateline NBC, which you never want to receive.
No, not in the car business.
They had sent people to go to your dealership and to basically kind of
view and investigate the way you did business.
So it started this whole chain of activities where you called everybody into a meeting room
and you started talking about what happened.
It's an entertaining, it has a good ending to it.
But it's a, but I'm sure it's probably a white knuckle ride for you to even remember that.
Whoa, that's because if they put you on TV in a situation where there's any,
they went into a bunch of dealerships in different parts of the country.
They were there on Saturday.
I got the fax on Monday.
We sold 80 plus cars on that Saturday and they sent four people in with hidden cameras.
Oh man.
Something's gonna go wrong.
Something will go wrong.
Fortunately, you came out smelling okay like a rose,
but a whole lot of effort went into getting to that point.
You see these gray hairs?

Story.
Yeah, listening to that story gives me anxiety.
It makes my stomach hurt.
Telling you.
Real quick question for you.
So my wife has a 23 suburban and I bought it brand new and we've had several electrical
problems with that car since and I just got it back from the dealership and they said they
got it all fixed, but she's basically saying she doesn't like it anymore, doesn't trust it,
and doesn't really want to go back to another suburban or I was thinking a GMC.
She drove a Wagoneer and when she'd gone on a trip in Colorado and said she really likes that.
So we were looking to get that, but then I've had some friends say that's not a good vehicle.
It's got problems.
So we have four kids and we have horses and so she wants to be able to pull a horse trailer
and then needs full drive because we, you know, there's some gravel roads that get a little muddy
sometimes.
So what is your thought?
What are your thoughts on the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer, whatever it is?
And you have any other options?
You know, it's probably, when I reviewed it, it was probably one of the most enjoyable
large SUVs that I've ever driven.
I loved it.
There have been some issues.
I won't lie to you.
I won't, I mean, I don't know who told you that, but they were right.
There's been some things that were wrong with the early models.
I haven't heard anything with newer ones like the 2025s or even if the 2026s are out yet,
I think they are, but I haven't heard anything lately about problems, which makes me think
that they probably got them fixed and handled.
But it's one of the absolute most enjoyable vehicles I've driven.
Has she, as she looked at the new Ford Expedition yet?
No.
She really should.
I wasn't a huge fan of those in the past, but boy, when the 2025 came out,
they got my attention.
And you can read my review.
If you'll put Expedition in the search box at the top, it'll pull up my review.
It's a great SUV and I've heard of zero quality problems with that.
If you get the extended version, it's going to be about the same size as the Suburban.
It's a little more fuel efficient and nearly as expensive as a Suburban or a Grand Wagoneer.
So let me tell you, I would roll the dice on the Wagoneer if she really loves it,
but I would have her look at the Expedition and see what she thinks.
If she loves that Grand Wagoneer, she may not like the Ford.
But either way, I'd go with it with the Wagoneer.
I'm not scared of it.
It's not all about cars and trucks.
It's about what suits how you drive.

Hello.
First of all, I'm talking about my 2014 Kia Soul.
I bought it new, but one thing I need to mention, I'm 88 years old.
The only thing I wish I had are the bells and whistles.
I do not have a backup camera or anything of that nature,
but I absolutely still love my car, feel comfortable in it.
Do not enjoy getting into my husband's 26 Honda.
I just feel like a whole different ball game and I like mine.
I'm wanting to know what advice you would have
about adding some kind of a package.
I don't really know what I'm talking about
to give me a backup camera and stuff.
Yeah, Colleen, when you go to adding things like that, it's never very good.
A backup camera is no good if the picture is really grainy
and that sort of thing.
You can't really see out of it very well.
I can't recommend that.
There's been so many safety features that have come out since 2014.
I think you'd be better off moving up maybe to a 2020 Kia Soul,
maybe a 2021 with low miles.
They're super cheap because the car's been discontinued,
but that doesn't matter.
There'll still be plenty of parts around.
I think when you go to adding things that are safety related like that,
you need blind spot monitoring to help you.
You need sensors in the bumpers to tell you
when you're getting too close to something.
You really need to trade to a newer vehicle, kiddo.
I just can't recommend anything else.
So look around.
Get a 2021, 2022 or maybe a new one.
They're cheap too.
