Welcome to EV News China.
The podcast dedicated to the world's largest electric vehicle market.
Each day, we bring you the latest headlines, insights and analysis from the heart of China's booming EV industry
and decode how fast-moving developments in the East are shaping the EV landscape.
We'll start with some news of the brutal EV sales in China cumulative.
Now surpassing 40 million EVs have been sold there, sustaining a decade-long status
as the world's leading EV producer and seller.
It for a while was around the same levels as Europe, but now a few years later, well into the lead.
Now sales have expanded dramatically, rising from 1.3 million EVs a year in 2020 to 13 million in 2024,
underscoring robust growth, supporting global carbon reduction.
The industry's new targets, outlined by eight government agencies earlier this week,
set the 2025 goal at 48% of the light passenger car market.
And so the overall car sales this year, they want to be 32.3 million units in China.
And year-to-date figures show that any V sales reached 9.59 million for the first eight months of the year.
That's up 36.37% over the same first eight months of last year.
BEVs were 6.16 million, up 46%.
Plug-in hybrids were 3.43 million and only up 22%.
So very much the wind behind BEVs in China, despite all of the noise and talk
and the real-life car launches of the current craze of launching E-Revs or Reeves range-extended electric vehicles.
Chinese auto brands have made notable inroads into Europe,
recording a 91% increase in the first half of the year with a 5.1% market share.
This expansion not only drives tech progress, but demonstrates momentum for EV transportation
and talking of charging in China.
Also today, nice little data point coming out that by the end of August in China,
they had 17.35 million EV charging units, up 53% year-on-year,
according to the National Energy Administration.
Public charging units were 4.32 million, up 38%, and private charging was 13 million,
up 60%, compared to the same eight months last year.
All right, let's move on and talk BYD Yang Wang, their high-performance arm
and a short teaser video placed online with the U-902 edition,
a new test car in development described by the company
as the world's strongest horsepower.
The preview shows the U-902 driving out of a garage,
shots of a fast-moving track, things like that.
BYD offering no additional design or specification details for the prototype,
the very definition of a teaser, barely a few seconds long.
Now, it's a little confusing because I found this story on Chinese media,
Karnoos China, which is an English language website.
Also, Electric reported it, they're really good at what they do,
all saying that this new prototype, the U-902 track edition,
it comes with 3,000 horsepower, the most of any EV.
Which isn't true because, and I'm not saying they're wrong,
I'm just saying I'm not sure BYD, I can't find anywhere that BYD
did announce the horsepower of this, the 0-2 edition,
because the 3,000 horsepower number actually relates to the 0-1
track car, which has been out for a while now,
and that broke the speed record last month.
The track edition was engineered with Enhanced Aero,
a mass produced 1,200 volt ultra-high voltage platform,
4 motors of 555 kilowatts each, which is where they just multiply that by 4
for 2,220 or 3,000 horsepower.
Now, again, you can have 4 motors that are all capable of a certain power,
you can't just times that by 4, sometimes they do pull the power back,
they combine the power to get more range in some EVs.
Either way, look, that car last month in August reached 472.41 kilometers an hour,
that's 293.54 at the Pappenberg test track,
setting the official global record for EV speed in a production,
or at least production-intent vehicle.
German racing driver Mark Baseng piloted the car for the run
following previous speed attempts last year.
One of the core technologies is their 1,200 volt ultra-high voltage platform.
BYD says it lets the motors draw energy more efficiently for stable,
high output at extreme speeds.
The car also uses the E4 layout, or UC Fang layout,
with 4 motors, 30,000 RPM motors that spin so fast.
This configuration produces a power to weight ratio of 1,200 horsepower per ton.
That's significantly higher than something like a Koenigsegg-Jesco absolute,
which is 986 horsepower per ton, and supports the U9's acceleration
and doing that 300 miles an hour speed run.
To handle the extreme speeds, see up at this speed,
it's not so much the car engineering, although by no means am I belittling it.
You end up at the very frontier of tire technology.
So they use domestically produced high performance tires,
rated to 500 kilometers an hour, or 310 miles an hour.
They're semi-slicks with a wide tread and an increased contact area and traction.
So this U9-02 that they teased to date, and all the websites were like,
whoa, this is going to have 3,000 horsepower.
No, I think the car out there at the minute,
well, we know it had 3,000 horsepower, or it was advertised as that.
So a little bit of confusion around it.
I totally understand there's very little information around this vehicle,
but I guess what we can say is that not happy with making the fastest EV in the world,
BYD, are turning the dial up.
The base U9, what a slow little run around this thing is,
it's only got four motors rated at 240 kilowatts for just 960 kilowatts of power,
or 1,300 horsepower.
It only goes 0-62 in 2.36 seconds, and will only reach 192 miles an hour.
I mean, lucids go quicker than that.
The road going U9 has an 80 kilowatt hour BYD blade LFP pack.
They rate it as 450 kilometers CLTC, launched in 2024.
It's priced around 1.68 million yuan, but 180,000 US dollars equivalent.
So special, you know, I know tongue firmly in cheek, really special.
So we'll wait and see when we find out more about this 0-2 edition.
Wow, it's just incredible.
Like I say, you will end up at the very limits of physics of grip,
and just the tyres not shredding themselves at these speeds.
But fascinating.
All right, let's move on.
Got to talk about the Geely Galaxy tonight.
The Galaxy is an SUV, and the Galaxy M9 is a car
that was released yesterday.
Entering the market, the catch's attention,
the effective range of the, not distance, but the pricing, is 174,000,
173,800 price, RMB up to 234, which is, that's after some discounting,
though there are some limited time discounts.
But look, that's about half the entry cost of a Li-Auto L9.
Six variants are available.
Split between two basic driver assist options and four models
with some more smart driving, each with different battery,
drivetrain and feature choices.
On paper, the technical specs of the M9 SUV hit all the marks.
The platform is 5.2 metres long and over 3 metres on the wheelbase,
close to the Li-Auto L9.
You can either have an 18 or a 41 kilowatt hour battery pack
on this plug-in hybrid, so 230 kilometres on CLTC, up to that,
or 1,500 kilometres total.
The flagship variant has all-wheel drive, 640 kilowatts of power,
and 0-60 in 4.5 seconds inside.
Agent OS runs the cockpit, pushing AI integration.
There's front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations as well.
Monthly sales forecasted at 5,000 units,
and August sales for the Geely Galaxy brand up 172 per cent year-on-year.
Seeing the M9, they think it'll set new price benchmarks,
as in low, for large hybrid, e-rev plug-in SUVs.
The launch continues Geely's aggressive competitive strategy
that's delivering a rapid expansion for the brand.
Now let me talk about a more expensive vehicle.
That's the Denza N9.
Again, Denza, a premium part of BYD.
The Denza N9 launched yesterday.
I'd mentioned it two days ago on Tuesday that it was coming,
and this lands right in the middle of premium SUV segment.
Three trims priced from 390,000 yuan,
so it starts at 54,000 US dollars equivalent.
The latest model introduces a green and silver two-tone paint option.
There's already a purple and gold two-tone paint option.
Underneath plug-in hybrid setup,
with 202 kilometres of electric range,
1300 of combined range CLTC.
It's, again, really big.
5.3 metres long, 3.125 metre wheelbase,
helping all of the really luxury touches
from a power-deployed side step
that comes out to greet you
to the dual chamber air suspension.
Inside comfort and technologies,
the focus on this, the cockpit,
is has three high-res screens,
17.3-inch central touch screen
and a large 50-inch augmented reality head-up display,
26-beaker sound system, and the Dialink 150 cockpit tech.
Seating is six, so two plus two plus two across three rows.
All the seats are heated, ventilated,
and with massage function in the front, two rows.
The second row has little folding tables,
wireless charging, a big ceiling-mounted screen
that comes down, a refrigerator that heats as well.
It's got LiDAR, five radars, 12 cameras,
12 ultrasonics, and an NVIDIA ORIN-X chip.
The powertrain is a two-litre turbo engine
and three electric motors, a total of 680 kilowatts of power.
That's 1,000 horsepower.
Denzers E3 platform with cell-to-body technology
means that the battery pack is very tightly configured.
It's got rear-wheel steering, stability control,
parking aides, and all sorts of high-tech software
that'll handle snow, grip, emergency blowouts,
super-luxury comfort, but also a decent lick of speed
if you need to go quickly.
This new car, the DENSA N9, again, premium bit of BYD,
looks extremely special.
Looking a little bit neo in places.
Honestly, I've said it before,
looking very Range Rover in places.
I wouldn't want to be anyone making a vehicle in that segment
at the moment because the bar is set so high
and the pricing is so insanely low.
Okay, look, I know 390,000 RMB.
Was that checking my notes?
It starts at US$54,000 equivalent.
Yeah, look, I get that's a lot of money,
but this is a three-row, if you're looking in the US
at buying, I don't know, the Hyundai Arnick 9,
the Kia EV9, or any three-row R1S,
anything that's a big three-row SUV,
and then this vehicle comes in at like 40,000,
effectively less.
It's still expensive, but you get so much
and all that self-driving technology
and just bags and bags of luxury.
And of course, outside of China, overseas,
a badge that nobody knows in DENSA,
but more and more people are,
and they certainly have heard of BYD by now.
What do you think of cars like this?
I think they really do take things to a whole new level.
Talking of performance, by the way,
a quick mention for Xiaomi.
Xiaomi make the YU7, that's their crossover,
and one of those has been seen
testing around the Nürburgring Nordschleife
and looks like it could well be a development
of the YU7 to be called the GT.
The variant was seen in China back in July.
After the standard YU7 went on sale.
Like Xiaomi is a company that's five minutes old
in terms of making vehicles.
I've said this before as well.
Early reports called the YU7, the Ultra version,
which would match the SU7.
So the S is their sedan, and the Y is the SUV.
The SU7 Ultra is their high performance one,
whereas Auto Home claimed that this will be called the YU7 GT.
Look, it looks really special.
The rear fenders are widened,
has 21-inch wheels by the look of it,
ceramic brake discs, yellow calipers, a ductile spoiler,
frameless side mirrors, flush door handles,
lidar on it, powertrain details.
Look, if you mirror that from the SU7 Ultra
to the YU7 GT or Ultra,
three motor layout, single front motor two at the rear,
combined power as 1138 kilowatts or 1500 horsepower,
a CATL Kirin 2 battery, NMC technology, 94 kilowatt hours.
So the sedan, the SU7 Ultra has been seen all over the world now.
We've seen it near Ferrari's Maranello factory in Bologna.
Reports that it was perhaps Ferrari
evaluating that vehicle for their upcoming electric platform,
whereas the SU7 Ultra is a big Cruiser GT Cruiser,
but if you want to, will unleash a bunch of power.
The YU7, in a very popular form factor being the SUV version,
is only going to increase competition.
And honestly, what Xiaomi's doing is massively impressive,
massively impressive.
I know they've got lots of engineering talent in the company,
but in terms of making EVs, like I'd say,
they've been doing it for five minutes.

what's happening in the world's biggest EV market for listeners
in the West and the global EV industry.
Leech photos from China show the design and features
for the refreshed Envoe L60.
At the first model from Neo's family-focused sub-brand,
Neo is completely on a roll right now
with so many of their vehicles.
Envoe's really good as well.
FaceShare and head of Envoe's brand confirming in August
that a facelift was coming.
Neo holds its annual event this Saturday actually in Hangzhou,
in China, and that would be an opportunity
if they wanted to show off the new L60.
These cars are being refreshed at such a pace.
This isn't even one of the quickest refreshers.
We're seeing refreshers after six months in China.
It's insane.
Interior changes to the five-seat SUV
include a fold-out tray table
mounted on the back of the front seats
with a new metal rail across the seat back.
That's a feature not seen in the current one.
The center console has been redesigned.
There's now a deeper, longer phone slot, new storage tray
that was previously open.
Dashboard trim has shifted to a lighter wood grain finish.
Chinese media reporting additional functional updates,
dual wireless charging pads for the front row,
ventilated rear seats, exterior changes
with a new gold paint color, and new wheels as well.
The L60, albeit being a bit more of a budget family brand,
the NEO's other cars still use NEO's 900-volt platform.
It's a very high-voltage platform,
60 kilowatt-hour battery, or 85 kilowatt-hour battery,
up to 454 miles or 730 kilometers of range.
Pricing starts at $33,000, equivalent on that one.
So this one, this next one from Cherry,
they've launched the full-win X3L.
So this is looking very Jeep-y, very Land Rover Defender-y
to give you some comparisons on this,
using the new extended range system in four options.
And this is the bit that I had to do a double take.
It starts at $120,000 you want.
That's $16,500 US dollars.
Okay, it gets more expensive, but it only goes to $22,000.
Trading prices range from only $15,000.
So let's talk about the exterior.
It's a very boxy shape, very boxy shape.
The front face here has a horizontal black trim
that integrates with all the headlights.
The side profile is very much square.
So hidden door handles, black body trim,
but a very utility-looking vehicle here.
Handles that probably pop out when you approach them.
I imagine, unless they're designed like Tesla's ones,
where you have to push one side,
but otherwise they sit flush.
The rear door is a side-opening door.
So you're getting an image now in your head of what kind of off-road vehicle
or kind of Land Rover Defender-y style vehicle that this is.
A roof platform system, vehicle-mounted drone,
because you need one of those.
Roof rack with 75 kilograms load capacity.
Loads of side storage, trunk storage.
It'll tow pretty well.
There's a side climbing ladder up the side of the thing.
Off-road mod bits as well.
Inside, rugged styling, full LCD instrument cluster.
A floating 15.6-inch central control screen.
Driver assistance with some intelligent driving systems.
They say supported by mapless highway navigation,
urban memory navigation, remote parking,
trajectory-based reversing, and multi-level memory parking.
Okay, the powertrain is a 1.5-liter engine
with 115 kilowatt motor.
The single-motor system is 185 kilowatts.
There's an all-wheel drive, obviously,
because this is pitched as an off-road vehicle.
The pure electric range of this hybrid is 84 miles
or 134 miles of electric range.
The four-wheel drive system has nine driving modes,
like compass turning, tank turning,
low-speed crawling, downhill mode, off-road mode,
single-pedal mode, the approach and departure angles,
22 degrees and 30 degrees,
ground clearance of almost nine inches, 23 centimeters,
on a vehicle that starts at $16,500.
You get this thing cheaper, by the way,
if you do a little trading on it.
Inside, okay, it's simple with grab handles
and it's rugged and stuff, but it's still full of technology.
Oh, my word, that's so cheap.
Let's finish off by talking about how Canadians
are happy to cut their EV tariffs
for a better relationship with China
over things like canola oil.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Mo just returned from China
saying he hopes that the canola tariffs
are going to be reduced.
China imposed tariffs of 76% on canola seed
and 100% on canola oil, meal and peas.
Observers see them as a response
to the Canadian tariffs on Chinese EVs,
which they followed the US in doing last year.
The new Angus Reed Institute poll
finds the majority of Canadians
now favor lowering tariffs on Chinese EVs
to get a deal on canola.
Nationally, 57% want to reduce EV tariffs
to help the canola situation.
24% would like to keep the current tariff levels.
Scott Mo said the situation is not as simple
as dropping the tariffs completely,
but finding a solution that works for everyone.
Saskatchewan accounts for 55%
of the Canadian canola production
and unsurprisingly shows the highest regional support
of getting rid of the Chinese EV tariffs.
Now Prime Minister Mark Carney
announcing he would suspend the federal mandate
for 2026 that requires 20% of vehicles
sold in Canada to be zero emissions
after a 60-day review that is underway.
The mandate has been intended to lead
to 100% zero emissions by 2035.
This poll finds liberal voters
are most likely to support
reducing or eliminating EV tariffs
on Chinese vehicles in Canada.
Well, wait and see what happens there,
but the deal that could well be done,
even if it's a reduction,
even if it's a cessation of the tariffs,
would mean that Canada would open up
as a whole new market for Chinese EVs
like we have done here in the UK.
Obviously we have a very special relationship
with Canada, I think for many reasons
for trade, for historical reasons as well.
So many similarities,
a lot of love between the two countries,
but many similarities between
in many industries and cultures
and Canada and the UK,
but a ton of Chinese cars here.
