cold. Let's get on with the podcast. I'll take a slurp at halftime. Tello Trucks announced a $20

million funding round, including Mark Tarpening. That name's familiar. Yep, he's one of the two

founders of Tesla. The company is developing the MT1. It's a really teeny weeny, tiny electric

pickup truck, no larger than a mini. But the point is, this is still a working truck. The

MT1's base price is $41,000. Not that it's on sale yet, but the company lists a standard

range of 260 miles, 420 kilometers, and variants offering up to 350 miles in the works.

Key features include a five foot bed. That's 1.52 meters. But I think the point is,

five foot is kind of a standard bed size that will extend to eight foot with a folding mid-partition.

When extended, the bed can carry plywood and stand a bit of plywood. I don't buy a lot of

standard bits of plywood myself personally. What would be being a softy podcaster? But

if you work with your hands and you want to get a bit of plywood, this truck will do it for you.

The vehicle will offer all-wheel drive as well. Before this round, Tele had raised $8 million

and used the funding to build two working pre-production prototypes. The $20 million

exceeds twice the amount Tele had previously raised. Tele says it'll use the new capital

to reach production readiness and pass federal requirements. This is not an easy task

building a vehicle and getting it on the road without the kind of backing of a major OEM or,

you know, for instance, Jeff Bezos, although not through Amazon, but I think through his

investment vehicle, investing in the Slate electric truck. I've heard he's got a couple

of quid in the bank. He might be doing all right. Now let's move on. Price parity between

electric vehicles and internal combustion engines has boosted EV sales where it exists,

because affordability matters. According to JD Power, the average transaction price for an EV fell

below that of a combustion powered vehicle in two months in both July and August as well. Last

month, the average new EV cost was $44,908. That's $600 less than the average gas price,

$45,521. By contrast, January 2023, so when you go about two and a half years before Tesla got into

some really aggressive price cuts and the market was different, in the United States, the average

EV was costing 62 and a half thousand pounds, which was 16,000 pounds more than a gas vehicle.

Of course, recent political changes mean that the $7,500 federal tax credit is going away,

but for now, at least for the next, checks my watch, five days, you can get a stellar deal on

electric vehicles. Of course, we're talking average prices here with the JD Power study,

and what we probably should do is if we're being really, really nitpicky, is compare the same model.

So for instance, over here, well, there's loads, but if I pick one, the Vauxhall Frontera, right,

so that is sold in both combustion form, EV form, in the same trim levels, price parity.

So over here, that vehicle is the same price or whatever you're going to do,

finance or leasing or whatever. So it's been hit in many places and when it does happen,

people go for the EV time after time. But Accura, next in the news today, say, well,

no one's buying electric vehicles, so we've got to stop production of the ZDX. Well,

an internal memo obtained by dealershipguy.com website says that all the allocated 2026

model year units have now been canceled. The memo says the move aligns the business with the needs

of our customers. Well, not the customers that want to buy ZDX. Not very aligned at all, actually.

Can we buy one of your cars? We're perfectly aligned with you. No, we don't make them anymore,

I'm afraid. They are, of course, making that with General Motors, their co-development partner.

The decision was led in part by slower than anticipated sales. This is the line that

all the car makers wheel out sometimes when they have to, I don't know, they've got some bad results

or they didn't sell as many things or like this, they're canceling a whole car. ZDX is a great

little car, by the way. And that's when nobody wants EVs. We asked everyone, do you want one?

Do you want one? Do you want one? Nobody? Okay, fine. We'll just cancel it then. And so

the ZDX sold mainly with very heavy incentives in all seriousness, tongue out of cheek now.

Yeah, look, they were massively subsidizing this vehicle. It was like $5 more than a Honda CR-V hybrid,

which is, you know, not a ZDX. And so you'd go for the electric one, wouldn't you? But in order to

get those customers through the door, a bit like the Honda Prologue does really well in the sales,

but look what they're doing. Lease cash added to the deal, regional bonuses, dealer incentives,

federal incentives, and all of a sudden, $30,000 is taken off the vehicle.

That probably made the vehicles unprofitable to make and sell for Acura.

Okay, let's move on. What about silicon anodes? And why should we care? Well, we probably should.

Sila or sila technologies. Just started operations yesterday, a new factory in Washington. The

facility is capable of enough silicon anode material for up to 50,000 vehicles. It's the

first large-scale silicon anode factory in the West. And this is important because if you

want to wean yourself off of China, you've got to get involved in the supply chain.

Planned expansion could take that up to 2.5 million vehicles worth.

Silicon anodes increase the energy density of a lithium-ion battery by as much as 50%.

Sila has agreements to supply anode material to Panasonic, to Mercedes,

car makers, and their suppliers will be the factory's primary customers.

Sila located the factory in Washington because of cheap hydropower, the available land,

and a nearby supplier of a key raw ingredient. The first production runs at the Moses Lake Plant

will be used to demonstrate to customers that the material matches the samples they've been

providing. Now, let's talk a little bit about EV sales in Europe. Oh, they're good. Oh, they're

really good. Jato Dynamics retail sales data for the 28 European markets show 790,000 new

passenger cars were registered in August last month, 5% up and who was doing pretty well.

Germany was up in their car sales, Poland, Spain as well. And why were those countries

going up? Oh, you beat me to the punchline again. It's because of the demand for battery

electric vehicles. Bev retail registrations were 160,000 units in August, up 27% from the

same month last year. Bev's BEVs accounted for a record 20.2% of the new car market in the entire

European region. That's up 3.6% from the same time last year, and up from 16%, which is the

year to date total. So August was really, really good. So far in 2025, 1.54 million BEV

registrations, Volkswagen leading the way in August was 16 and a half thousand, 10% of the

total sales. Now, Ford is racing BlueCruise 1.4 for the F-150 Lightning rolling out the new

software update for the trucks that have built 2022 to 2025 F-150 Lightning's that have BlueCruise

depending on the model year. You might move from BlueCruise 1 to BlueCruise 1.4. Ford says

drivers will get more time in hands free mode, a more continuous experience on tight corners

improved as well. In internal testing, F-150 Lightning drivers could stay hands free on the

highway eight times longer than before this update cuts deviations from the centre of the lane

by 80% versus Edition 1. It also adds in-lane repositioning, which automatically shifts the

vehicle when alongside a large semi truck to give it a little bit more space. Yeah,

it's the only time when some of these self-driving systems perhaps scare me a little

bit. Sometimes when they drive too close to the curb, please don't curb my wheels. It's really

expensive fix and also when you're overtaking, I guess, but if you're going alongside a truck,

sometimes these ADAS systems are really, really close. We'll take over a little bit

steer further away. And so that is part of the new system as well. Now, Electrify America

launched pilot charging sites that let all types of vehicle charge regardless. So that would

be Tesla or non-Tesla vehicles charging at the same stall with no adapters. Really important because,

I mean, North America is going to be living in adapter hell for a period of time, but this

is great. So we knew they were coming. They're now going in the ground. Two pilot locations have

been in Orlando, Florida, and Waterford, Connecticut, with stalls that can charge

two vehicles at a time. And then on each side of that stall, the cables that you need. So either

CCS-1, if that's what your car came with, or J3400, if it's either a Tesla or one of the

newer cars coming with J3400. Drivers can start and pay for sessions through Electrify America's

app and contactless payments because, obviously, we'll take a break or come back, we'll talk

Ken Power and the IRS, why it's not working so well for dealers and the Audi each one as well.

little bit about Kempower, the Finnish DC charging maker, and the UK infrastructure firm EO Charging,

installing, or they have installed now 342 electric bus charging points in the UK,

by the way, three year collaboration. The charges have been served 11 bus depots in

London and Scotland, mainly at least. In Scotland, the partners completed Kempower's

first commercial overhead pantograph project in the Northern Hemisphere. The pantograph system

delivers charging at 500 kilowatts, allowing buses to be charged in quick bursts. That's a great

bit of news for making public transport go electric. It's not all going so swimmingly in the US

right now. The federal tax credits go at the September 30th. We know that. We know that

the impending end of the credits is making a surge in EV purchases. And of course,

what you've got to do is get a signed order and put some money down. The vehicle doesn't have to be in

your driveway. EV sales in the US hit a record in August, according to Cox Automotive.

Since January last year, buyers could apply the credit at the point of sale rather than

doing it as part of your filing, your tax returns. In mid-September, the IRS altered

that process without any notice. Now, the IRS portal, I thought I'm an expert on

US tax affairs, but I'm trying to understand it. The IRS portal began requiring additional

documents for each vehicle's sale, including a photo showing the vehicle's proof of purchase

held up next to the vehicle identification number in the door jam. Dealers now report this week

that the IRS is starting to mark every single sale of an EV as pending. Dealers who previously

received near immediate approvals through the IRS portal and payments, sometimes within days,

as well. And now unsure when they'll be reimbursed for thousands of dollars that effectively they're

advancing to customers for each sale. Some dealers say that they fear they might not even get the

money for months. Some are worried or at all. And that's not okay because everyone's acting

in good faith and small businesses or even medium and large businesses as some dealer

groups are still aren't a free bank to the federal government. That's not okay. If they're

giving the money off the car and footing the bill, they need to be reimbursed because at the end of

the month, they've got to make payroll. That's not the way that you treat businesses. So come on,

IRS, get that sorted out. And then it'll all be over in a week's time. And you can

crack on with hating electric vehicles in that part of the kind of political sphere.

The rest of us know that this is a mere speed bump in the road. I'm convinced of it,

by the way. I don't see the US slowing down. There may be some catching up to do,

but if any country can do it near the US has the ability, the will, the talent at some point,

they go, well, we want to go EV a little bit quicker. I've no doubt the US is going to catch

up. And there's going to be in a way, if we look for silver linings, all right, let's look

for silver linings when the US perhaps goes through this political cycle of denying climate

change called today by the current incumbent of the White House, the biggest con job ever told.

All right. So respectfully, many people would disagree. Those would be clever scientists type

people. However, when all political cycles work their way through, there might be a more friendly

environment. But even then, you can't stop individuals making the individual choices they

want to make. And if they want to stick with diesel and petrol, that's absolutely fine.

And for those that want to go EV, well, let's not demonize those people just because

currently think different to current set politics. And so I think this is at the very best,

a short to maybe medium term hiccup. But I mean, the world's going EV, we know that we're

all going to drive around on electrons one day, and we'll all do it at our own speed.

Let's talk about the Audi e-tron batteries playing a role in a new hybrid energy park.

Ian B. Vey has commissioned a 58 megawatt solar park in Gundelsheim. I'm so sorry to my German

listeners made up of about 110,000 modules over 136 acres. It's the second largest solar site

in the state in the first phase of a hybrid project adding wind turbines and battery storage.

The whole energy complex covers 158 acres and will generate enough electricity each year

for 30,000 households. The storage system is being installed while approvals for two wind turbines

are in progress. The storage combines repurposed batteries from old Audi e-tron vehicles and

also a sodium ion battery that's a megawatt hour. Ian B. Vey says that the sodium ion unit

is the largest currently installed in Europe. We love stuff like this, don't we? EVs supporting

the grid in the most interesting of ways. Now, obviously, we are in a brave new world of electric

vehicles and there is going to be some glitches. The company DCS Digital Charging Solutions

says that attackers, hackers, are gained access to consumer data through a third-party

service provider. DCS provides EV charging services and white label solutions for fleet

operators and OEM manufacturers as well. DCS said that there was anomalous activity,

opened up an investigation and reported that sensitive customer information was involved.

The precise extent of the compromise had not been disclosed. Early indications suggest

exposed data may include your personal details like email address, payment information. The

company says that no critical financial data has been exposed, that its core systems remain

secure. Okay, have they do the right thing? Let people know, change passwords, stuff like that.

I worked at a business 10 or 15 years ago where we were hacked. I wasn't in, you know,

I'm not a technical person, but it was an all-hands company meeting. You know, the directors

got everyone together and said, this is where we are. This is what we know. This is the

email we're sending to everybody on our database. It was a media organization. So we, you know,

had listeners and viewers and stuff that have registered for like our online kind of iPlayer

stuff. And like we're emailing everyone, this is what we know, complete transparency,

complete openness. It's great that companies don't try and, you know, there have been companies over

the years that have gone like, no, no, nothing to see here. I kind of denied it and then

stuff comes out. So that sounds like that company's doing the right thing as well

and being open about it and saying, it's not financial stuff, but your email might have

leaked through one of their third party partners. Now, a charger help study found that

routing software can mark a charger available based on uptime when it's out of order.

It's really interesting, isn't it? So there is a bit of a gap, a bit of an offset between

the charger being available on the mapping software and stuff and you turning up to

charge your EV and it's not working. The report shows uptime. I think this is a U.S. study

found that uptime is increasing. So the official uptime data that's published says that

charging uptime is getting better. Charger help analyzed more than 100,000 sessions on 2,500

chargers with partners like Plugin America and Parin. They excluded Tesla superchargers,

which is interesting. They identified some issues and software related issues between

them being marked on the maps, the apps, the stuff like that, you know, the

routings, the software as up and available and actually the charger not being able to deliver

a charge. They found that charger make and model weren't really significant, but the age

of the charger was. New stations had an 85% first time success rate and there's a 15 point

decline on hardware that was older than three years. Now, Hyundai is hiring for a battery

factory in Spain, South Korea's Hyundai Mobus, employing 450 workers, a new EV battery system

plant in the Navarra region, northern Spain. The industry chief there and the regional president

while visiting Korea confirmed that the hiring figure was confirmed to local media at least

and that they were hiring another 450 workers there to make batteries in Spain. They're

investing $230 million in the facility. Once operational, the site will have the capacity

to produce battery systems for up to 360,000 vehicles every year. The factory will supply

batteries to VW and automakers in southern Europe. Now, let's finish off with this study.

How far would you walk to charge your EV? Now, we do live, I least live in a country that's

pretty built up. A lot of our old cities are a bit of a nightmare if you live with no

driveway and things like that. This is the first house. We didn't buy our first house with a driveway

until we were 39, we might have just been 40. But we've always lived in houses where you either

parked on the street outside and when we lived in London, obviously there's no chance of that

because we were kind of southwest London, really old house, like 100 year old, 120 year old

houses and stuff. And like the streets are barely, you've got a park on the pavements.

I mean, you're meant to, the lines are painted on the pavements, but

you have to do that otherwise you'd never get down the middle of the road. These are

old London roads. And so, you know, I wasn't earning enough to have a driveway and a garage

when we were in London. And now a new survey looks at people who go EV that live in a somewhere

that don't have their own driveway or where are they going to charge their car? And if you

need to go put your car in charge and then go home, this survey found that fewer than a

third, so 31% of people would be willing to walk more than 10 minutes home if leaving your car

on a slow charger or something. The average walking time from UK households to a public

charger is, according to this study, 11 minutes and 56 seconds. But only 31% would be happy

to do it. Many EV drivers who lack off-road parking depend on public charging and sometimes

leaving them on overnight as well. Average walking time varies by region. In the

east of England, 15 minutes, London, three minutes. Motability, who did this, provides

cars to disabled people. Warning that gaps in local charging infrastructure can discourage

many drivers from going electric. Hey, that's completely true. If you don't have charging

at home, you absolutely can't go EV. It's a little barrier that you have to not mind,

though. And my goodness, when you have a driveway or a garage, is it easier to own

an EV? Let's not, you know, pull any punches. That is absolutely a fact. Do tons of people

have EVs and charge them publicly? Yes, of course they do. But only 31% would walk more than 10 minutes
