Welcome back to the podcast. Today, Ford's first electric truck, cheap BYDs for Europe,

and Germany's EV sales surge. Plus, stay tuned because later in the show, I'll tell you why

charging lounges will be the future of refuelling in 2026. We'll start with news of

Ford Trucks unveiling its first fully electric heavy lorry, the F-Line E, aimed at regional

and urban logistics, as European regulators tighten rules on cutting emissions from freight.

The Cabover vehicle offers a range of 186 miles and DC fast charging,

positioning Ford in the growing market for zero-emission regional haulage.

Revealed at the Seoul Neutrans truck fair in France, the F-Line E is built by Ford Autosan in

Turkey, a Ford joint venture that has produced Ford vehicles for more than 60 years. The truck

is due to enter European and selected other markets next year in a 4x2 and 6x2 version.

The 26 tonne 6x2 chassis carries four 98 kilowatt-hour

nickel manganese cobalt battery packs for 392 kilowatt-hours in total and 314 usable.

Ford puts the range at 186 miles or 300 kilometres. The 19 tonne 4x2 uses three packs,

with 294 kilowatt-hours in total, 235 usable, for an estimated 155 miles or 250 kilometres.

Batteries are supplied by ZF, supporting CCS2 fast charging at 285 kilowatts on the long range

version. Ford Trucks says a charge from 20 to 80 is less than 50 minutes. Options include rear

wheel steering, an electric power take-off and equipment for towing up to 10 tonnes for

jobs like refuse collection and hub-to-store deliveries. BYD will launch a plug-in hybrid SUV

in Europe before it does so in China. The Yuanup DMI, to be sold as the Ato-2 DMI,

will be the first hybrid in the Yuan range. Its debut underlines BYD's growing focus on European

demand and shifting local markets. Unveiled in Barcelona on November 19th, the Ato-2 DMI

will go on sale alongside the long-range pure electric version, the Ato-2 Comfort.

That is a BEV, with a WLTP range of 430 kilometres, more than 100 kilometres above the base version.

The plug-in hybrid DMI system offers up to 90 kilometres of pure electric range

before the petrol engine will cut in. Two plug-in hybrid versions are planned. The active

model has 122 kilowatts of system power, a 7.8 kilowatt-hour battery, and about 40 kilometres

of electric range. The boost model raises that, with an 18 kilowatt-hour pack and up to 90 kilometres

of range. In China, the Yuan lineup, including the Yuanup and YuanPlus, is all electric.

The launch in Europe thus marks a split strategy for the very first time. Plug-in

hybrids for Europe, pure BEV in China back at home. BYD says it's responding to European

customers' varied needs by offering both models. European sales are growing fast.

BYD registrations reached 24,963 in September, around five times the level one year earlier.

The test is whether this twin-track strategy can sustain their recent 400% regional growth in

Europe as competition and regulation tightens in 2026.

League Motor, another Chinese EV maker backed by Stellantis, plans to sell its new compact SUV,

called when it arrives the B03X in Britain from 2026, and it will cost £25,000. The car is

expected to have a real-world range of close to 300 miles. Production will start in China in spring.

Shown at the Guangzhou Motor Show, the B03X, otherwise known as the A10,

is officially rated at 378 miles on China's lenient test cycle. European figures will be

nearer 300 miles. The battery has not been confirmed, but it'll use probably the larger

67 kilowatt-hour pack from the B10 and its 215 horsepower rear-mounted motor.

Here in Britain, it will sit below the B10. That's a £30,000 car, and is aimed at buyers

looking for cheaper electric cars. The B03X is the first of a new range of smaller leap

motors. It'll be followed by a supermini to rival the VW ID Polo and Renault 5.

All use the rear-wheel drive setup from the Leap 3.5 platform, which promises more space and more

technology than the current little city car called the T03. Unlike some larger leap motor models,

which are sold as range-extended hybrids in some markets, the B03X will be a purebev.

An executive at the Guangzhou Show compared its upright boxy shape to that of a Japanese

K-Car. Even so, Leap Motor claims a very low drag coefficient, and the B03X will offer

advanced driver assistance systems. An artificial intelligence-based cockpit and over-the-air updates.

LiDAR-based Level 2 semi-autonomous feature is planned, though probably only in China.

The interior has yet to be shown, but otherwise could well feature Leap Motor's

14.6-inch central screen. The B03X is similar to its rivals in size like the Citroën EC3,

Ford Puma Gen E, and the Renault 4. Leap Motor has sold 2,391 cars in Britain so far this year,

led by the big SUV, the C10. The B03X is meant to increase its presence in the small SUV segment.

Let's talk another Chinese name, and another name, bringing a small car

to the European market. And that is Neo. They will launch their compact Firefly,

electric hatchback, by the end of this year. At least in Britain anyway, setting it up

against BMW's Mini Cooper. A right-hand drive Firefly was shown at the Guangzhou Motor Show

recently, signalling a wider global push for the Chinese brand than its small BEV.

Just over four metres long, the Firefly sits at the upper end of the small car segment.

Nios confirmed that Singapore will be its first right-hand drive market, but Britain will follow.

The car is already in sale in several European countries, like the Netherlands. Prices start

at 29,000 euros. That's about 26,000 pounds. That undercuts. It's more stylish rival,

the Mini Cooper E, which starts at 29,000 pounds in Britain. That includes a 1,500

pounds electric car grant. Neo is pitching the Firefly as a relatively cheap, but well-equipped

option. It uses a 41 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion phosphate battery. WLTP range claimed at

333 kilometres or 205 miles. The Cooper E, for instance, would be 180 miles from a smaller 37

kilowatt-hour pack. On the Neo Firefly, a rear-mounted 141 horsepower motor,

pushes the Firefly from 0-62 in 8.1 seconds, but practicality is its selling point, really.

A 404-litre boot, a 92-litre front trunk, and 26 litres of storage under the rear seats.

Also, Nios' battery-swapping system should be available on the Firefly,

though the company has not said whether it would ever bring battery-swapping

to Great Britain. In the Netherlands, the price includes the battery,

but in some markets, Neo discounts the car in exchange for a small monthly battery rental fee.

Inside, it'll have electrically adjustable and heated front seats and ventilation on the high trim,

a 14-speaker audio system, 50-watt wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera,

and 3.5 kilowatt vehicle-to-load capability, making it exceptionally attractive at that price

point. Let's go to Germany next, where new figures point to a sharp shift in Germany's car market.

Last month, in October, plug-in vehicles accounted for one-third of new registrations,

while pure combustion models slipped below two-fifths. Both Purebev's battery-electric cars

and plug-in hybrids gained ground, led by a new best-selling BEV from Schodder.

Plug-ins in total took 33.3% of Germany's market in October,

that's up from 23% a year ago. Battery-electric vehicles were a 21 share, plug-in hybrids 12.4.

Compared with October 2023, battery-electric volumes were up by 48% and plug-in 60%. Total

registrations in Germany 250,133% up on the year before, but combustion cars share falling

to 38%. So, it was the Schodder LROC, the top-selling battery-electric model,

the LROC-leading Germany's BEV rankings, with over 3,300 registrations in October,

ahead of VW's ID7 and ID3. Despite this, analysts say that the country's shift

to electric motoring is still at a glacial pace. They blame structural problems

and the end of broad-purchase subsidies. The German government, however,

is now weighing a more targeted package from January 2026. The plan would give 4,000 euros per

vehicle, capped at a list price of 45,000 euros and aimed at poorer households. Total funding

would be 3.5 billion euros. Officials say the rules will be drawn up to benefit mainly

German and European makers. Critics say this should shield incumbents, but sap long-term

competitiveness. The scheme may also distort demand as buyers hold off for the rest of this year

to see what incentives they can get in 2026.

All right, welcome back to the podcast. Range Rover's best-selling evoke will be

offered as a fully electric model from 2027 on an 800-volt platform. The next generation

evoke will use Jaguar Land Rover's EMA skateboard architecture designed mainly for electric powertrains.

It'll combine in-house electric motors with battery packs and Tata Group's gigafactory in

Somerset. That's in the southwest of this country. Currently under construction and

starting production in 2027. Competition, though, is already intense. Mercedes-Benz is preparing

an electric GLA that'll offer more than 450 miles of range. A figure will become a benchmark

at that price point, and surely giving some sleepless nights to the evoke engineers.

The 800-volt system will allow rapid DC fast charging.

Jaguar Land Rover is keeping its options open, though. The EMA platform can take electrified

combustion vehicles and a small petrol range extender. It's not ruled out.

This follows the company's decision two years ago to increase its output of plug-in hybrids,

even as growth in sales of pure bevs was slowing. Plug-in hybrids doing good business at Jaguar

Land Rover. It also reflects the British government's decision to delay the ban on new hybrid cars

from 2030 to 2035. One option is for the third generation evoke to be sold only as an electric

car, while the current second-gen model continues in combustion our hybrid forms.

That would mirror something like Porsche's plan for the Cayenne EV. And Mercedes-Benz

upcoming GLC and E-Class EQ models. But it would differ from things like the electric

Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which will be variants within their existing generations.

The design will that will evolve rather than change radically. The EMA's flat floor

will free up cabin and luggage space, a cleaner, more technology-focused interior,

upgraded driver assistance systems, and cloud-based connectivity will all be expected

as Jaguar Land Rover finalizes the evoke. Now, a very popular car, the Nissan Leaf is finally

getting its new version, built in Sunderland in the north, or Sunderland, I should say,

not Sunderland, in the northeast of this country, qualifying for Britain's highest

electric car subsidy. Under the updated electric car grant, it becomes one of the more generously

supported cars on sale. The Leaf starts at £32,249 and qualifies for the maximum grant,

not many vehicles do. That's £3,750 off the price of the vehicle,

as long as it's a pure Bev under £37,000. Production in Sunderland is due to begin

next month, it's only the fourth model to reach that top tier, alongside the Ford Puma Gen E,

the Ford E-Tornaya Courier, and the Citroën EC5 Aircross.

35 other eligible models get the lower £1,500. Every Nissan electric car sold in Britain now

qualifies for the scheme, the micro hatchback and the aria already got the lower amounts.

Now, at launch, the Leaf comes with only a 75 kWh battery, which offers a claimed range of 386 miles

and a single 213 horsepower motor driving the front wheels. Nissan says it accelerates from 0-62

in 7.6 seconds, but a cheaper version, with a smaller 52 kWh battery pack and a range of

271 miles is confirmed, which would be below £30,000. The range of trims is tightly stacked under the

£37,000 grant ceiling. The Engage is £32,249. For that, you get a heat pump, 18-inch alloy wheels,

an 11 kW on-board AC charger, and twin screens. The Engage Plus costs £900 more. It adds

Google services heated front seats and a larger screen. The advanced trim gets a dimming panoramic

roof head-up display and powered tailgates and privacy glass, and the Evolve flagship,

which is £36,249, adds a vehicle to load, synthetic leather, and driver's massage.

And BYD's Shark 6 cab chassis has cleared Australian regulatory approval, paving the way

for a plug-in hybrid work ute aimed at fleets and tradies. With only a cab and chassis rails,

it would give operators a bare frame for custom trays and service bodies, putting BYD up against

long-established rivals down under. Approved last week, the cab chassis would keep the

dual cab Shark 6's main dimensions. It would have a tear weight of 2,565kg. With gross vehicle mass

unchanged at 3,500kg, that would be just under a tonne of payload. BYD has not confirmed if and

when sales would start, but the approval programme suggests it's on the way. A cab chassis using

the same plug-in hybrid system as the regular Shark 6 is a 1.5L engine with 135kW of power,

and an electric motor for a combined output of 321kW. It has a 30kWh battery for 100km of pure

electric range. BYD also said to be working on a more powerful 2.0L plug-in hybrid version,

hinting at maybe a wider push into electric utes in Australia. The cab chassis should lower the

entry price though into the Shark 6 range, and is aimed at fleets and trades that need specialised

bodies. Since its launch last year, the Shark 6 has logged over 15,000 sales up to the end of

October, ranking 4th in 4x4 ute sales behind the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max.

Let's finish with a couple of charging stories. Walmart has begun offering its 400kW DC fast charging

centres at busy places in Florida, the latest sign that the retailer is quietly building up its

ultra-fast nationwide charging network in Walmart car parks. The newest hub is the Walmart

Supercenter 779, that is otherwise known as Lakeland, Florida. It's got four ABB charges,

each rated up to 400kW at earlier sites in Arizona, matching that. Each unit has two ports,

giving eight stalls in all, four CCS-1s and four NAX connectors. Now, standardised, of course,

SAE J3400. EV infrastructure watcher Landon, who posts as the ARC Traveller on X,

reports a price of 46 cents per kilowatt hour. Drivers must start and pay for sessions through

the Walmart app to get that price. There are no credit card terminals. But Walmart now runs 13

charging locations across Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona and Florida, totaling about

the 1,000 stalls, most of them in Texas actually. Lakeland is the first of nearly 40 identified

Florida sites, Georgia is next in line for the 400kW hardware. Walmart currently buys its equipment

from ABB and Alpetronic as way that's really good hardware, using the Alpetronic HYC400.

It aims to install thousands of charges by 2030, turning its stalls into high-volume charging

hubs as EVs over the next decade will move away from CCS and towards NAX. And finally,

what's the best place to go and charge at if you need to stop for a period of time and stretch

your legs? Now, for a long time, for years in fact, I've been talking about the incredible

electric highway refurb that was done over here by GridServe, and particularly the larger

GridServe sites, whether it's Braintree or any Stanglia where I used for a long time,

where I'm from, my family's from, Gatwick's now open as well. And these are large sites

where you can always be guaranteed to get a charge, where there's a lounge, there's a

WH Smith, which is a news agent, there's a Costa Coffee, there's, I don't know,

this sounds like, you know, a bit of an old curmudgeon, really nice toilet and shower

facilities as well. And I'm of a certain age where I like a clean toilet facility.

And the same is now being rolled out in many places in the US. I think that model has really been

taken. And one of those rolling out is Iona, the fast charging joint venture backed by eight

big car makers. They've just unveiled their new flagship site, the Iona Beacon, the next generation

Rechargery, as they call it, meant to change what recharging means for vehicles and drivers

with a bias on design and on site comforts. In its latest blog post, Iona presents the

Beacon as the next step in its North American DC fast charging network. Each site will have at

least 20 ultra fast charges, each able to deliver up to 400 kilowatts. Every bay will offer both

CCS-1 and NACS or J3400. The first beacon is Westminster, California, with 22 bays.

Iona plans to spend more than $250 million in California alone, building hundreds of sites

across the state and several beacon hubs. The beacon design focuses more on the human side of

charging that I've just been talking about. Iona calls it a thoughtfully designed space

where travelers, families and communities can come together, a place to rest, reset and reconnect.

Standard features include a full canopy over all the bays, toilets, an indoor lounge for

work or rest, there'll be retail spaces selling essential and local goods,

landscaped outdoor areas and activity zones, facilities like pet waste stations,

outdoor seating, local arts and warm lighting are meant to make the sites feel safer and more

pleasant. Iona describes the hubs as a place that feels welcoming and human,

where every detail from the architecture to the amenities serves a purpose to make

your experience effortless. Iona already runs more than 40 stations with over 400 bays

and aims to have more than 30,000 fast charging bays by 2030. The Westminster beacon will be an

early test of whether high capacity upmarket charging hubs can set a new standard for public

electric vehicle charging in North America. I've long said that I will go out of my way

to go to a grid serve site, particularly if I have my family with me because I never want them

to think that going EV has ever been an inconvenience. And it has been when I've been on my own and I've

run down to a low state of charge and I've turned up at a station and there's been it's been full

or there's been two chargers and one of them's not working and I'll risk that if I'm on my own

or go to an old site that's not been updated and you know I'm getting less and less of that

as time goes on if I go back five eight years or so it was a lot worse but if I have my family with me

I'm absolutely going to one of those sites that have somewhere we can get out stretch out legs

buy a coffee probably spend as much if not more inside the shops as I would on the electricity

I think it's worth every penny by the way I do road trips so infrequently
