Welcome back to the podcast today. Lucid's Robotaxi vehicles, the US EU auto tariffs are set and Riveans are too confirmed for the UK.
Bust a tuned later in the show. I'll tell you which Chinese auto maker brought and tore down three.
Test the model Y crossovers to study and what they thought of it. By the way, no even news China today as it's the weekend right will start with Lucid.
Lucid Motors has delivered its first engineering vehicles to Nuro. That is for integration with Nuro driver.
The self-driving system that will power a future Uber exclusive Robotaxi network. The delivery follows Lucid's partnership with Uber and Nuro to build a global rubber taxi fleet.
Under that agreement, Uber is expected to deploy more than 20,000 autonomous Lucid vehicles powered by Nuro's technology across dozens of international markets over the next six years.
The program is expected to begin in a US city somewhere sometime in 2026. Nuro driver is classified as a level four autonomous system.
These vehicles will be offered for ride hailing through the Uber platform and operated directly by Uber or their fleet partners.
Now for Lucid, the program represents an entry into the Robotaxi market, a shift in its long-term business model perhaps.
The Uber exclusive fleet could position Lucid as a supplier of purpose-built autonomous vehicles.
Happened didn't it with the Jaguar I-Pace and Waymo and everyone got very excited didn't really have the kind of effect that I think people were thinking right.
They'll go for a Waymo, they'll ride in an I-Pace and they'll get out and go and buy one because they're so fabulous.
And the I-Pace is a great car and Lucids are great cars as well. But will you take a ride in one of these Uber's and then rush out to go buy a gravity? Well, we'll wait and see.
Now the US government has implemented a new trade agreement with the European Union that sets the tariff on imported EVs from Europe and also parts themselves at 15%.
A Federal Register noticed published on September 24 confirmed the rate and it was back dated to August 1st.
Mercedes-Benz at the agreement was a positive step and urged politicians on both sides of the Atlantic to keep working towards a better deal.
Germany's VDA Car Industry Association President, Hilda Gard-Mulla called the move an important step.
The 15% reduction resulted from reciprocal negotiations and was conditional on the EU, first passing legislation to cut its tariffs on American industrial and agricultural goods.
The EU approved it on August 28.
Before these changes, the standard US tariff on cars from the EU was 2.5%. Why SUVs? 25%.
The Trump administration had a one point threatened a 25% tariff on everything imported from the EU.
The agreement covers vehicle all vehicle types and is relevant to the EV market since many of the EVs in demand in the US are currently made in Europe.
Now a vehicle going the other way made in the US but we really really really want one and that's Rivians new R2 and they will expand into Europe and will offer right hand drive of the R2 SUV.
A UK launch will follow once the left hand drive models of hit mainland Europe know UK date announced to date Rivians sold only in North America with the 60,000 pound R1 SUV and the R1T.
But the R2 is 4.7 meters long developed with a European export in mind. Founder and CEO Argie Scaring said the R2 will arrive in North America in the first half of next year.
Price from $45,000. That's 33,000 pounds and of course we haven't out the door price as it were so nothing too add to that.
The R2 will offer more than 300 miles of range and come standard with a single motor on the rear axle with an optional dual motor set up.
Rivians currently has one manufacturing plant in Illinois and will soon begin construction on their plant in Georgia.
Moving on and our second bit of Rivians news today is they're now producing hundreds of production intent builds of its $45,000 SUV.
The company posted on social media and I quote they may not always travel in packs but sightings of the R2 are on the rise.
As hundreds of production intent builds roll off our pilot line and hit the road for real world testing and final validation on its blog.
Rivian added in recent weeks more and more R2 vehicles have been out in the wild eating up miles as hundreds of production intent builds come off our pilot line.
Rivian expects the R2 production to begin in the first half of next year as I say at its normal plant and it's a global product so we're looking forward to seeing when it leaves US shores but for now one sold in North America will have the J-3400 connector or port I should say on the side.
So that gives you access to those Tesla superchargers at least the ones open anyway now let's talk a little bit about an X range extended RV so people get quite worked up in edge cases in terms of electric vehicles whether that is towing or more specialist activities.
We get very upset that EVs can't do it all sorry only 10 years old you ask a 10-year-old to do everything that a fully trained adult can do you know combustions had a hundred years to get this right and one of those things that we get very worked up about is RVs.
Now I appreciate if you're in that community and we used to have a motor home I was I was a member of the caravan club I had the sticker long before children when we had you know money.
And so yeah I've fully signed up we owned our own motor home my wife and I had some awesome adventures in that and now in the world of electric vehicles perhaps electric isn't ideally suited to RVs at this point in time with this battery technology but it will do.
However people get very upset now for industries and harbinger introducing a camper bus class a camper bus they say with an estimated range of 500 miles because they're using a range extender the embark EV is about 10 meters long about 30 meters sorry 30 feet.
And it's described as a bus size class a motor home it uses the same underpinnings as last year's test vehicle the chassis carries a big battery 140 kilowatt hour pack by the way the all electric range of the embark is 105 miles yes 105 miles with 140 kilowatt hour pack and then an on board engine generator powers the electric drive after the battery gets depleted for another 345 miles.
Or 555 kilometers and then you can recharge it or you can fill the tank up if you want to or you get your destination and plug in if you have a hook up when DC fast charging is available it's an 800 volt architecture 80% in less than an hour.
The battery is mounted centrally within the chassis to keep the mass low the batteries intended to power on board applications as well so you may want to keep it topped up a little bit.
So I don't cook your dinner or something and they point out that obviously are these are not typically used all the time that it can back up your home power as well Monday to Friday when you're you know work and it's sitting outside your house.
Okay, let's talk about Mercedes Benz EQB production that is ending ahead of its successor Mercedes removing the EQB from its online configurator the company will only build cars for orders place before the end of the model change production will end when it comes to the car.
We'll end once those orders have been processed from the start of next year the EQB is replaced by the GLB which uses the M and eight platform.
EQB is is officially a compact class SUV it's quite big though actually at about 4.6 meters long it's been out for years now.
It's three row people often forget that it's an optional third row as well so lots of family buyers for that it's about 21,000 EQBs in Germany alone by the end of 2024 I think those figures were the EQB sets on the MFA 2 platform and is largely a conversion of the combustion engine model.
The EQBs maximum charging power was only ever around 100 kilowatts and it was made in Hungary not the greatest of EVs GLB significantly better now.
Volkswagen's Svik out MEP plant is taking a pause.
There won't be any cars there for in the week after next talks are underway about a production break and it's second German plant in emden but no decision made.
Svik out hopefully I'm saying that correctly so sorry to basically everybody who I butcher most languages.
Svik out currently assembles five MEP cars the VW ID3 the Cooperaborn they're on one line and then the midsize SUV so the ID45 and Audi Q4 Etron plus the sport back variant the site has been heavily affected by a redistribution of models between plants agreed in the Christmas 2020.
VW 24 Wage Settlement Volkswagen plans to move production of the ID3 in Bourne of Wolfsburg or Wolfsburg within the next two to three years once golf production ends there.
The ID4 which currently rolls off the production lines in two places in Svik out and emden will be produced only in emden going forward.
Volkswagen will discontinue the coupé offshoot of the ID5.
They say it just hasn't had the demand they expected according to the December plans only the Audi Q4 Etron will remain where it is now Renault 5 sales assurging.
Renault Chief Marketing Officer Arno Baloney said that it would be a massive mistake not to replace the Renault 5 when it comes to the end of its life.
They're looking at a 5 year plan on this the next generation super many must evolve to preserve its appeal.
The Renault 5 has been on sale for maybe a year or so.
It's one of the most popular electric vehicles in Europe already the model is central to bringing new buyers into the brand.
It's a really good price.
It's got all the way that the South Koreans do it so different battery sizes different trims but they do strip it all out.
But it's so stylish you know what get the small battery get the base trim it's just over 20 grand.
And that car will make you smile every single time you get inside it you haven't got to go for the big battery big spec.
The 5 is on track to sell 5000 units in France in September putting it close to the petrol engine Clio and that's increasing Renault's market share in other key markets as well.
Only France but Germany and the UK is doing really well too.
The cars opened opportunities where Renault had little presence Belgium and Turkey Renault didn't have big market shares there.
People were buying company cars so Baudis BMWs Mercedes but they love the styling of the little Renault 5.
It does a job for them as well and the cars are selling very well.
The biggest mistake would be not to renew the Renault 5.
Well I think that's clear it's going down really well.
And you know what I never got a new CEO at Renault and described it as a continuity CEO.
So all the pieces are in place but look the Renault 4 and the Renault 5 by throwing back to the heritage of the 1980s and before as well.
I think it's a really smart idea because obviously the cars are bigger, safer but they've got those styling cues.
They're just particularly the 5, not so much the 4, particularly the 5, so much style for not much money.
There's loads of stylish EVs out there.
You know from the early days of the little Honda Re, that was incredible.
The Fiat 500, that's always very stylish but quite expensive, not the compliance car but the second one that came out.
And there's loads of kind of cool looking cars but they've always been quite expensive compared to getting a bigger family car that was less cool.
And now in those low 20s you've got like the Fiat grounded panda, which is just got full of interesting design features and things.
It's brilliant.

The UK's department for transport's EV driver tracker
has been studying BEV's battery electric vehicles
and plug-in hybrids as well.
Look at a vehicle use where they charged barriers
to adoption, things like that.
Around 40% of Bev drivers and 43%
of plug-in hybrid drivers got their current vehicle
via salary sacrifice here, very popular scheme.
61% surveyed EV drivers had more than one vehicle
of those, 74% at the EV was their main vehicle.
Off street parking was available to 90% of the Bev drivers
that they asked, that's far too high.
You know, we, man, this is the first house
we've lived on, lived in.
We're the garage.
We've lived all over the place
in apartments and flats and in London,
a couple of places where it's on street parking.
And so having an EV with a driveway,
yeah, it's much easier.
But wow, 90% of Bev drivers had off street parking.
We need to fix, don't we?
For the next wave of people to buy EVs,
we've got to fix that,
we've got to get really reliable on street,
lamp post-charging and all those kind of things.
Journeys in BEVs, according to the UK study,
had a median distance of 11 miles.
Journeys in plug-in hybrids about the same.
Half of EV drivers made long distance trips of,
well, long distance, don't laugh at me.
100 miles or more.
And that required charging about once a month.
Yes, there's what we call long distance driving.
It's 100 miles or more.
We were a small island.
I mean, you know, you can't get too far.
Three in 10 did long trips at least weekly.
Most EV drivers had access to home charging.
91% of Bev drivers had access to home charging.
And you know, that's great for them.
But also, what about the people who haven't got home charging?
And is that why they're not driving a Bev?
Because they can't park their car right outside their house.
Sometimes you get home late from work
and the road is full and you're parking,
you know, two or three streets away.
Didn't there and done it for most of our,
you know, for all of our life really
until we moved, moved here.
And so apartment living, we had underground garages
and things like that.
That would have suited an EV.
But when we had houses, little terrace houses
and park on the street, yeah, that,
well, those times EV charging was not what it is now, of course.
And people still did it back in the day.
And it worked fine.
But we've got to get, we've got to get that public charging
and really focus on it as well.
And here, remove the massive tax
that our government puts on public charging
compared to home charging.
And that's not an attack on the government.
I voted for this lot for a change, by the way.
Whether you think they're doing a good job or a bad job.
I don't know.
I don't read a lot of the news, but so I'm not I'm not bashing
out a lot, but certainly it's one of the massive inequalities
that's not fair to people who don't have off street parking.
Now, let's talk about leasing and one of the companies
that remark its vehicles will have a remarketing division
they could even, so that's their new name anyway.
And so they are starting to use state of health battery
certificates for BEVs, which is really smart move.
Lots of people are doing it.
Anything coming off lease with them that they then remark it.
Avan says the battery is the most valuable component
that they've been EV.
Yep.
They'd be right.
It's called Avan's car market.
It's their vehicle remarketing platform for traders
and dealers.
So if you're a dealer and you want to get some stock,
you use lots of ways you can do it.
Obviously trade-ins and private sales and auctions
and remarketing.
So that could be lots of people defleating and stuff like that.
Avan's has that and they're providing battery certificates
across the UK and Europe.
Each certificate will show the battery's current capacity
as a percentage of its original capacity state of health
is already available for some used EVs listed on
the car market in France, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands.
Data shows EV batteries that retain can retain capacity
better than initially feared.
I don't know who was fearing it,
but that's what it says anyway.
Nevertheless, market confidence is hampered
in some cases by the transparency around battery conditions.
And I do forget that because I and maybe you,
like me have been geeking out on this for a long time
and if you're new to the podcast today,
then welcome along and everyone's welcome.
Driving EV is a broad church
and we're all just having fun enjoying our cars here.
But if you have been doing it interested for a while,
you remember back in the day.
As soon as people got testlers
and drove them big distances,
they were sharing that data on spreadsheets
and Google sheets going back eight, 10 years and stuff.
And so with their state of health on the battery
and we kind of realized pretty quickly
that what tended to happen, not always the case,
what tended to happen was you had a big hit
of depreciation but degradation on a battery.
Now let's say a few percent in the first period
of owning the car and then it really flattens off
and we don't even see that all the time anymore
if you look at the degradation graphs
but certainly we realize really quickly,
oh right, so battery digs not a problem.
What else can we talk about?
And it just became the million mile testlers
that might have gone through a few drive units,
some of them on their original battery,
many of them not by the way, very much triggers broom,
those million mile testlers,
like oh I've got a million mile Tesla
on its fourth battery and third drive unit.
Right, okay, it's not really the same car as it is still.
Talking Tesla, they've asked the environmental protection
agency not to roll back.
Current vehicle emissions standards
are stars that departs from other automakers
that want the rules loosened.
The request coincides with the US president
telling the United Nations General Assembly
that the climate change agenda is a con job and a scam.
Delightful, Tesla CEO Elon Musk
spent $300 million to elect this man.
Thanks a lot, Mr. Musk, well done everyone.
Big round of applause all round.
And so yes, climate change is a con job
and a scam according to the,
what are they called?
Leader of the free world.
And it's letter to the EPA,
Tesla very much took an opposing stance
than the White House and said please don't overturn
the legal standards known as the endangerment finding.
They said that it's based on robust factual
and scientific record.
Well, yes, I mean, I'm not a scientist,
but they do all agree that climate change is real.
So I think I'll go with the experts.
Tesla lists in its mission the acceleration
of the move to sustainable energy,
the world's transition to sustainable energy.
But they also gain financial benefits
from stricter emissions standards
because the other automakers,
when they fail to meet the fleet emissions target,
have to pay them hundreds of millions of dollars for credits.
Now, Tesla superchargers are rolling out.
Tesla confirmed it's begun placing supercharger locations
on state highway signs in the US
with the first state-owned sign observed
in interstate 10 Arizona exit 155,
which is brilliant.
It's one of those things that you see all the time
with petrol stations.
And we've been doing it for maybe a few years,
putting the little pump,
the little kind of electric symbol for an EV charger
on the motorway signs, not particularly new here,
but new for the US and new for Tesla.
Tesla's global director of charging says
that Tesla drivers do 99.98% of road trips possible
in a Tesla, but many people have no clue.
And the first state-owned highway signs
that now show a Tesla supercharger logo are going live,
placing supercharger entries on highway signs
next to gas station logos increases the visibility.
I think it increases the visibility.
I think it also does a resettle thing,
which tells people it's okay.
There's somewhere to charge your car.
Like you and I know that if you opened up your map
or whatever, your app, your favorite thing,
they're everywhere.
But if you don't drive an EV and you're not looking for them,
and you're not looking for them,
so it's like when you buy a red car
and you see lots of red car,
or you buy a certain make of car,
and then you're driving at home
and everyone's driving one.
You see what you see.
You only see what you're looking for, don't you?
And so lots of people don't even look for car charges.
And it's just a nice little reminder,
there's loads of them around.
If you go EV, you're gonna be all right.
I love that.
Now, finally, Xiaomi are new to making EVs
and not too proud to say let's see how the best do it.
The Xiaomi CEO, Lesion, said the company
in the past have bought three model Ys
and took them apart, every nut and bolt
and were very impressed.
They studied every component one at a time.
He said, they're calling the model Y
a strong reference for Xiaomi's YU7.
He said, if you don't choose YU7,
consider the model Y.
He said, Xiaomi spent significant time
on the SUV's interior layout
and compared the YU7 battery range to the Tesla Model Y
and said, Xiaomi delivered strong performance
for its price point.
He said, I'm not criticizing the model Y.
The model Y is a very, very outstanding car.
Yes, it's kind of the way that the CEOs in China play the game.
They all say, our car is wonderful
and everybody else's cars are fantastic too.
There's not too much trash talking.
At least, publicly, it's all very friendly.
Separately, data from the China passenger car association
showed Tesla's China sales fell 4% year over year
for August numbers, but last couple of weeks
have been pretty good actually in China,
so might make a bit of a recovery there.
But yeah, even Xiaomi, not too proud to admit
we bought some Teslas, Turumapart, very impressed
and we're highly inspired.
