That's right, it is Saturday morning
and I'm here for you in the car connection workshop.
The guys, Skippy and the guys, they're all off.
Yep, it's that time of year.
Give them a little extra time to take care of the business,
if you know what I mean.

a mystery leak that's got every single one of us
scratching our heads.

with a little wit, a little wisdom and a whole lot of fun.

I still sound a little raspy today,
but it is the, I have to say new, slightly new
and improved motor mouth this morning.
But if I hesitate for a minute or a little pause,
that's because I'm probably just about hacking out a lung
on my talk table here and my microphone.
So yeah, was out to dinner last night.
It was the banquets are starting
and because we do a lot of fundraising
and get involved with local charitable organizations
and groups and stuff and car shows,
we're always invited to join in and be a part
of those celebrations around this time of year.
And there's a bunch of sick people out there.
I mean, not, you know, sick as in you're a nut bar,
don't walk out in the forest
because you probably will get picked up by a squirrel.
No, not those kind of people,
but they got this thing that I have
and some of them have been struggling with it for a month.
One lady, two months, I'm going, shut the front door.
No stinking way.
I'm going to give myself a fuel injection flush.
No, if so, if you're one of those, man, I feel for you.
My heart goes out to you today.
That's for sure.
Well, we got a lot of mileage to take up this morning.
And you know what I did the other day?
I forgot.
I forgot, I forgot to say thank you to our program partners
and miss them out of the whole package.
Well, not a hundred percent,
but give me a moment to make sure that we say thank you
to all our program partners through the whole year 2025.
And here we are beginning a brand new generation
for car connection after 31 years being on the radio.
Even while I have my own automotive repair shop
on the Hamilton Mountain for almost 11 years
in 18 hour days, my body just couldn't take it anymore.
And it let me know, hey, dude, back off.
Or, yep, that's right, we're giving you that.
So thank you to Crystal Ridge Dream Center
for being our faith-based nonprofit organization
serving men, women, children, meals, love, and hope,
and changing lives one at a time in the Niagara region.
And you can be a part of that, that community.
You can donate your time.
You can donate something each month, whatever you can do.
You will absolutely bless them.
And that's where I was last night was the banquet
to say thanks to all the volunteers.
And what a beautiful evening it is.
It always is every year for a lot of these organizations
because keeping volunteers in place
and that they love what they do,
that's how these organizations and along with you
coming alongside and doing whatever you can
to support them was just outstanding, outstanding.
And to see the group picture last night
of all the volunteers was just, it was breathtaking.
What a wonderful meal, a wonderful evening,
and what a great way and example to show
you appreciate all those who dedicate
and donate their time to make someone else's life better.

There is something in some truth to living as a minimalist,
but you know what, the same underwear for seven days?
Yeah, no, I can't do that.
It won't work, let me tell you.
So yeah, there is something to that
that gives yourself peace of mind
because you really can't put price tag on peace of mind.
So we're looking forward to coming alongside
Crystal Ridge Dream Center in 2026,
doing everything we possibly can
to help them do what we can't.

This stuff is going on out there, folks.
And the only way I can help you is like, subscribe,
follow, comment, the comments are what pushes us out
to bigger algorithms with the Google gods.
And that's what gets us out further to reach more people.
You're gonna learn what the component is, where it is,
how it works, how it breaks, why it matters
and how you could have understood your car
just a little bit more to prevent that damage from happening.
And always remember, when you're taking a vehicle
into the service department,
you want four things out of that service rider,
no excuses, you want the work order complete
to protect you from being ripped off.
Don't worry about them, you need to protect you.
Here's the deal, something my grandfather taught me was this.
Business is business, friendship is friendship.
You wanna keep that friendship
with the people who have the service center,
make sure they're doing their job.
So you wanna make sure that the concern,
whatever the concerns are with your vehicle,
that's all written down and it's on the work order.
So if you have four things that are of concern,
there should be four items in detail written down
on the work order.
Number two, cause, that's diagnostic time.
That's cha-ching.
Are you gonna give them an open bank book
and give them your debit card and the pin number?
No, one hour, you authorize one hour for all four items.
Then you want a phone call to authorize more dyag time.
You do not want the five o'clock surprise.
You go there thinking all day at work or wherever you are,
the phone's not ringing, you're not getting an update,
and you're thinking, ah, it should only be a couple
of hundred bucks today or 500 bucks and I'm out the door.
You get there, it's $950.
Yeah, that's called the five o'clock surprise.
So concerns are all written down on the work order.
Cause, you're authorizing and make sure
that's right on the work order.
I authorize one hour of diagnostic time,
then I need a follow-up to move forward.
The cause, what are the components
that need to be replaced, fixed, or serviced?
All of it, so you want to know the total
for all the pieces, parts that are gonna go on your car.
All of it, and you tell them, don't leave anything out,
I want to know all of it.
And then confirmation, then that last time you talked
to me, you say, has my vehicle been road tested
to confirm everything is as it should be?
There you go.
And I'm gonna remind you on a regular basis
because this, the story I heard last night
at the table was just, it's $8,000, folks,
which should not be $8,000.
It should be a little less than half of that,
or at least half, unreal.
Just bought a car, I'll give you a short story.
Young chap, putting himself through trade school,
bought a car.
So, only had a few months, and the motor expires.
$8,000, there's no warranty.
$8,000.
And he's already paid the money up front,
and I'm like, should've called me first.
Anyhow, putting the cart before the horse doesn't work.
Anyhow, let's jump into what we got going on.

Are you just gonna let old man winter beat you up
and run you over a few times
and then back up just to make sure
there's enough tire tracks on you?
No, I'm not on my watch anyway.
So just remember lights on even when it's daytime
and it's overcast, it's dark.
Yeah, you know, around the studio on that,
I've always got a light on somewhere
because when it's overcast along the south shores
of Lake Erie, it's dark and the lake is dark.
So, you know, there's no reflection of a whole lot of light.
So you wanna make sure as we do in the summer
that people can see you in your vehicle.
And that doesn't mean skipping using your headlights.
In fact, yesterday heading out to the banquet,
I had my lights on.
It was kinda twilight, but it was still quite bright out.
But you know what?
It's better to be seen at that point in the daylight.
Put your headlights on full bore, period.
Just do it, it's a safety thing.
And you know, to be safe on the roads today,
man, sometimes I feel like I need to wear a helmet
and some body armor.
You know, midday rainstorms, shaded roads,
early morning fog, it's all about being seen, not just seeing.
So flip those lights on when it makes sense
and safety is always in season.
You know, things can change so quick.
And it's after the fact, you know what?
You can't go back and fix it.
You just can't.
Like my friend Jan, you know,
T-boned a couple of minutes from home
in her 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK and it was a beaut.
That was her dream vehicle.
And she saved up to buy it and had to say goodbye to it
this week because the young chap that hit her
did too much damage to the side and buckled the floor.
The insurance rode it off.
I felt for her this week because she worked hard.
That was her dream car and she made it.
She got her dream.
Now you gotta go clean it out.
Yeah, I know it's just cheap metal rubber,
but you know what?
It's everything behind that, right?
It's the things you don't see.

That's part of me that I really like when we go to car shows.
It's not just the vehicle, it's the story.
Behind the vehicle, it's like, you stand there
and I just, I'm in awe listening to the connection
behind some of these vehicles is just,
it's a movie, you know what I'm saying?
It's a story.
But anyways, I digress a bit,
but we'll share on that a lot more.
I've gone to a lot of car shows.
I've met a lot of amazing people
and I have heard some stories
that are just off the stinking wall.
Heart wrenching, heart wrenching.
And we got some stuff coming up
that's gonna be heart wrenching as well
because the goal of our YouTube channel is this.
Yes, to fix vehicles for widows, seniors, single moms,
they're hurting for free.
We get to shoot the video.
We'll get the parts somehow and we'll make it work.
So getting monetized is so important to offset those costs.
Maybe we'll get some parts stores jumping on with us.
I've been in the business long enough
and trustworthy enough.
Hey, throw some parts at us when we need it.
Let's get some people's cars fixed
that are going through a hard time.
But the goal for me is to give away,
raffle away a muscle car once a year.
And I have the first one tucked away.
I have not done anything to it.
It's a rescue.
It was a young couple.
They were having a baby.
The car had to go.
It was broken down.
It was in the garage being converted
to basically their baby's room.
I really didn't need it
because I had enough projects on the go at the time.
But anyways, I helped them out.
We agreed on a price.
I went and got the thing running.
I drove it home and I've done nothing with it.
It's gonna be the first one that changes lives
in the Niagara region.
And we need you to help us do it.
That's what we need.
We need you to help us to be able to put the car together
every single year and ticket sales
for a chance for you to win a muscle car.
That's the deal.
That's one of the deals.
All right, let's jump into a motormouth winter tech tip.
Number 23, foggy windows.
It's gonna sound funny, but it's true.
Hit the AC button.
Yes, even in winter, it will run.
There's a failsafe on every vehicle.
Every time you put the accessory knob
for the heating ventilation and air conditioning system
over to defrost, the air conditioning compressor runs
to prevent it from seizing up.
You can run it and defrost.
You can clear your windows.
It was like last night, same thing.
Out in the middle of nowhere, beautiful bank facility.
The windows were fogging up.
Put the air conditioning on and you'll see that in your dash.
There's one that shows AC and I think it shows
like defrost symbol there.
That's the setting.
It'll clear that fog off the window in no time.
And here's the reason why.
You ready?
It dries the air on the inside of the vehicle
so it pulls the moisture out and clears the glass
faster than your sleeve.
All right, so I thought I'd share that with you today.
That is motormouth winter tech tip number 22.
Yeah, put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Wow, no smoking allowed.
Yeah, not in the car connection workshop.
Things can blow up.
So be safe out there and utilize all these practices
to help you.
All right, where are we going next?
I'm not sure.
Of course I do.
All right, I have another couple of motormouth tech tips
for you today.
So it's one of those things if you got a brown paper bag
and a pack of Crayola crayons, they're my favorite.
And they never run out of ink.
Who knew?
Why do we need pens?
We got crayons.
So here's the thing.
You ready?
I have three of them for you.
Monitor your oil consumption.
How much oil are you adding?
So there's vehicles out there.
I'll explain what's going on.
And then you'll get a better understanding.
Monitor your oil consumption.
Always check your motor oil.
Always, always, always.
If you don't know how to do it,
we have a video, yes we do.
In our early days of our YouTube channel,
I think it's in like the first dozen
where I'm showing you how to check fluids.
Where they are, I identify them for you under the hood
of our 1984 Fire Chicken.
She's a beaut.
You have to watch the one where,
first time getting the engine running
that I put in there 31 years ago.
There's a backstory on that one.
You gotta watch that.
That's up there.
But on that particular vehicle,
because everything is easy to find and spot and check,
I run through where the fluids are, what they are,
how to check them, and how to understand
what's on the stick or what's on the bottle
that you're looking at, what is it telling you.
But check your oil at least once a week.
Here's what I tell folks.
Oil is cheaper than replacing a motor.
Got it?
The engine.
And get in the habit of the same day, every week,
just take your Kleenex out there or whatever, paper towel,
and check your motor oil.
Yeah, it doesn't take long to blow a motor up,
and it's a lot of money.
Like the young chap, $8,000.
Oh my goodness.
So monitor oil consumption.
If you're constantly adding oil,
here's what you need to do.
Each and every time you add oil, create a little chart.
The date and how much for 30 days.
If your vehicle's still under warranty,
that's called an oil consumption chart.
That's what they're gonna give you.
So create an oil consumption chart ahead of time
so you can show them, on this day, I put this much.
On this day, I put this much.
And do not overfill,
because that's not a good thing either.
Do not overfill.
Underfilling, low oil is just as bad as overfilling.
So again, create your own oil consumption chart,
because that's what they're gonna give you
when you go to the dealer and you go,
I'm putting oil on this thing like it's the Exxon Valdez.
The date, how much?
Every single time.
And do that for 30 days,
because that's what they're gonna wanna see.
30 days, how much oil are you putting in?
How much is too much?
Well, I know the answer to that as well.
A liter of oil in 1,000 kilometers
is ruled from a dealer level.
Normal consumption.
To me, I don't like it,
but there is some engineering behind it.
What is that?
Well, you guys like to drive cars like you stole them.
You know who you are, the 130, 135, 140 flyers out there.
No signals on your cars.
Change lanes like I'm not sure what you're doing next.
But I give you lots of space.
I'm the guy that gives you enough space
should you cause a problem, I'm not in your nightmare.
No, I'll make the call, but I'm not in your nightmare.
So the trade-off is this.
The engineers designing the engines know
you drive the cars like you stole them.
You got the engine RPM way up there,
zipping in and out of traffic.
And all to just, you know,
one person hits the brake lights, everybody checks up, right?
And if you're not paying attention, crash, yep.
Now we got, you know, the parking lot going on.
You might make it home by tomorrow.
You know the deal.
So they know you're driving like that.
So the trade-off is like a motorcycle.
Motorcycles and small engines rev high.
They need lots of oil to prevent them from blowing up,
seizing up and falling apart.
So the trade-off is they know you're driving the vehicles
at very high RPM for extended periods of time.
We need lots of oil under the piston skirts.
Tons of it.
The trade-off is when you're socking oil
like the Exxon Valdez underneath the piston skirts,
you're going to consume some oil,
but the engine won't blow up.
It'll last, it can take it.
It'll take it for a while.
Excuse me, I need a beverage.
Yeah, this thing I got from whoever, whatever.
So that's the trade-off.
So for you to drive it like you stole it
and keep the engine RPM way up there, well over 2,500,
you do know that's where your gas mileage drops off to nothing.
After 2,500 RPM, I want you to hear this.
Yeah, that's the straw sucking the fuel
to the fuel injectors.
It's the size of a fire hose.
So that's where your fuel consumption goes to.
After 2,500 RPM, you're giving it away.
That's an added bonus tip today.
So that's why oil consumption.
Need a lot of oil splashing the piston skirts
to prevent scoring of the pistons and cylinders
and the engine goes ka-blem, ka-fluy.
That is a technical term, we understand it.
And so there has to be oil consumption
because there's a lot of heat there.
Motor mouth tech tip number two,
small maintenance counts.
To do it right, don't forget the oil changes.
Don't extend your oil changes.
Even if they tell you can go 16, 32, et cetera,
every 16K or whatever, no, don't do it.
It's your engine, and if it goes ka-fluy, you're buying it.
Not them.
Do not extend your oil changes.
Here's the trick, I'm gonna give you the skinny
on what's really going on out there.
You ready?
They don't want you maintaining your cars.
They don't want you keeping them longer.
They want you out of it in a couple of years
and into another one.
That has been going on for about the last 10, 15 years.
As service techs, that's one of the things we talk about
around the workbench is they're not pushing service anymore.
If you don't ask, they're not gonna tell you to do it.
And when you ask, oh, you don't need to do that,
that's maintenance free or that's long life.
And you hear all these words, buzz words,
that you wanna hear.
They know how to play the word game, the word salad,
because they want you out of that car
and they need to move sheet metal and rubber over the curb
so that they make money.
And then your pre-owned car,
there's a hot market for that, baby.
They can get that car out from underneath your butt.
They got a waiting list of people
that that is what they're looking for.
So it's a game and you gotta know how to play the game.
So small maintenance counts and to do it right,
your oil starts with your oil changes.
Do not extend your oil change service.
I probably have thrown out thousands of liters
of better motor oil than what you have
in your car this morning.
Why?
Because I understand the rules.
Change the oil sooner, not later.
Yeah, the oil monitoring thing, that sucks, period.
That is set up to lose.
That's what that is.
By the time that light comes on,
you know what, that oil should have been well out of there.
And I don't care whether it's synthetic or not,
particles are particles and the filter doesn't catch them all.
The oil does degrade, it thermal breaks down,
it just does.
That's the science, it just does.
So all the, I hear the synthetic people out there going,
well, it's synthetic, you know.
It thermally breaks down.
Do the science, go do the science.
There's a ton of information out there.

Yeah, check that out.
Then you'll get an understanding of what I'm telling you.
Do not extend your oil changes.
Engines aren't cheap.
Okay, before I digress too far,
because we're already over the 30 minute mark, it's okay.
It's my time.
Motor mouth tech tip number three.
Three, you ready for it?
Here it is, brothers and sisters.
Close your eyes, it could hurt.
Fluid changes are crucial.
Neglecting is gonna cost you an arm and a leg.
Your hamster, your budgie, your parakeet,
your guinea pig, the whole nine yards, it's gone, it's gone.
If you're not willing to do fluid changes,
because there's a lot of fluids on your automobile
that are protecting components that are way expensive.
Fluids and filters are far cheaper than replacing
major components on your automobile.
It's that simple, crucial.
Neglecting is costing you all a ton of money.
A ton, I can't even begin to spell that out,
a ton of money.
Yes, my father used to say,
when somebody was doing a smoky burnout,
well, there's a fella's got more money than brains.
It's true, it's true.
Here's the thing, I'll close with this.
Preparing your vehicle for winter is worth every dime.
Not doing it is neglecting your vehicle,
and that's gonna cost you in two ways.
Number one, you're gonna find yourself stranded somewhere,
and it's creepy, and it's cold, and it could be dark,
and it could be snowing, and your cell phone battery's
crapped out, and you can't get signals anywhere.
That's creepy.
Even for me, that's creepy.
So, are you gonna let winter rule you this year,
or are you gonna rule winter?
What I've been doing since we launched our podcast
is preparing you for the worst.
I don't want people to be unsafe out there.
It just takes a little bit of effort, folks,
a little bit of effort, you know, like that birthday card
to a special friend, you know, going to the dollar store,
buy a cheapy card that sounds pretty mushy,
fill it out, put it in an envelope, put the address on,
put a stamp on there, that kind of easy.
It's easy if you fall in love with the effort.
And I get asked that all the time,
man, what year is that thing?
I go, 99, what?
How is that possible?
I go, I've got a good one, you know, doesn't,
it never needs gas, oil, or parts.
And they buy it.
They go, are you, you're kidding me, right?
Yep, I am, I'm kidding you.
Effort, that's what I tell them.
You know what it takes?
Effort, and they look at you like a deer in the headlights.
What, you mean I gotta do something?
Yeah, you gotta do something, you know,
in just a few weeks, New Year's resolutions,
and you're gonna suck at it again.
You know, if you last 30 days,
you're probably doing better than the one that last five,
right?
You gotta fall in love with the effort
to get the desired results.
It's that simple.
And I'm here as your biggest and bestest cheerleader.
You can do it.
It's not gonna kill you.
It's not.
You know, after the broadcast here today,
I gotta get everything ready and staged

Yeah, and it's not all staged and put together.
It's the real deal, folks.
It's the real deal, what I show you.
