A four-barrel carburetor is a part of an engine that mixes air and fuel to help the car run better. It has four openings to let more fuel and air in, which can make the engine stronger.
The Ford Thunderbird is a well-known old car made by Ford. It was popular for its cool looks and strong engines. People like to restore and work on these cars because they are special.
Bearings are small parts that help wheels and other parts turn easily without rubbing too much. If they get bad, your car might make noise or not drive well, so they need to be fixed or changed.
The Austin Healey 100 M is an old British sports car that was made faster and better than the regular version. People like it because it's a cool classic car from the 1950s.
A senior project is a big school assignment that students do in their last year. It usually involves working on something important to show what they've learned.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet is an old fancy car with a roof that can fold down. People really like it because it looks nice and was special when it was made.
Auto restoration means fixing up old cars to make them look and work like new again. People do this to save special cars and keep them around for a long time.
Route 66 is an old famous road in America that people like to drive on for fun, especially with old cars. It goes from Chicago all the way to the beach in Santa Monica.
military secrets wiretaps trash hauling bootlegging book making he's got all these fun things and
and it was obviously a funny business card by that there's no one of course he was a car guy
of course he started out a restoration at McPherson college because he's he's exemplifies that
spirit that our restoration students have and and I see it in the men and women in our program
that they're curious and fun loving but they're serious about what they want to do and that to me
is what makes this program exceptional it's the faculty who teach in it and it's the students who
study it nice that was a long answer it was it was a perfect answer yes I wish I could relate
what's coming up for the students well I want to tell you about and this is not a college event
this is a student initiated event but last spring break Owen Phillips who's one of the students
in the restoration program dreamed up this scheme that he and some buddies were going to take a
spring break trip along route 66 from McPherson they made it as far as Arizona and he turned around
and came back they had cars from the 1920s and I think the newest car might have been in 1965
there's actually a video about the document of the trip it's really cool and so they decided
this year since it's an anniversary of route 66 they're going to do it again but they're going
to go all the way to the Santa Monica pier really and that ties right into what I'm saying is they're
adventurous they're interesting they're fun and so I actually had Owen and Owen and another student
Jack were out with me in California for a car auction and they were telling me about this plan
to go to Santa Monica and these old cars I said have you guys ever driven in California no well
one of them's from California but but Owen was like no no I said you're not concerned about taking
cars from the 20s and 30s and 40s out oh no well we're gonna have a great time and you know what
they will and so I mean that is that's coming up next week so they leave this weekend on that trip
oh cool I can't wait to follow it I just I think it's such a great idea they camp out along the way
they sightsee and if you follow along on social media it's Philip 66 rally I think his road
rally is what it's called just really that good fun that I think young people need to engage in more
lots of bailing twine and duct tape will be had by all the garlic bar boy
the sun would be down it'd be dark and they'd have their flashlights out working on their cars
oh yeah and it's just it's great it's that camaraderie and and connection that that I think
really defines the car community as a whole but you know we're seeing it right here in a microcosm
on our campus and that's pretty fun what about student internships grad placement around the
industry car show I god I'm so excited for car show I always am we always come back to that
don't we because that's a key piece but we had a couple of weeks ago we hosted our annual career
fair on campus and it was really a full circle moment for me when I looked around the room
and half of the employer representatives were our graduates who I remember sitting on the other
side of the table as students and now they were back interviewing students and that's pretty special
right you've got there were some who were only out a year or two and others who'd been out
10 years and and they all come back together and one of the other employers said to me
I can tell that I can tell that that relationship of them coming back and staying connected
is really strong because you see it even though they're all of different years of graduation
and they come back and they're connected by this thing and this thing is is McPherson College
so we have we had 34 employers that participated in that and then students are in the process right
now of they finished interviews and and they're getting offers at this point determining what
they're going to do we have typically a placement rate of more than 95 percent for internships and
jobs so every student graduates with at least one internship many more than that and we have
high rates of placement before graduation six months before graduation and six months after
graduation so our students are getting an education that they get jobs they get good jobs I even have
a picture of you with one of those employers who's down there looking around we may have a really
terrific picture of her with Rick Hunter from Hot Rod Express nice so yeah rick's down there
looking for employees as well as should be um I was in rick's shop last week they had no fewer than
six corvettes in there right now he's uh for some reason guys with corvettes are flocking to him I
can't imagine why that would be I'd love to claim that I'm responsible for that I don't know that
I am I think it's just a damn good I think it's the great work where that they're doing over there
yeah all right mentioned it several times car shows right around the corner favorite weekend
all year tell us what we can expect this year any idea how many cars are coming I know they haven't
started doing registration yet right more than 400 because that's what it typically is we feel
like 50th anniversary it might be who knows a little stronger kind of skies the limit right
and so we anticipate a lot more alums will be back and we always have a really strong showing
anyway we're inviting former faculty members advisory board members just really every come
one come all this is going to be a fun time we're not doing a great deal of additional
programming because the celebration is really about the students and what they do at that car
show and we don't want to distract too much from it but it's going to be great it's May 1st May
2nd the car show is actually the second but May 1st Friday night there's a cruise in downtown
from about 6 to 8 8 30 and that that's just a great they shut off four blocks of of downtown
McPherson the restaurants stay open and it's just this great time where you walk around you see
people you see cars and lots of people come to that that maybe don't show their car on Saturday
so you see a mix of things students will bring their cars out that is also student run and then
Saturday morning bright and early students start pouring pulling their cars out onto the field
and then I believe at nine o'clock is when it open eight o'clock is when it opens to the public to
be able to bring to bring registered cars or to register and get their car on the field and then
opens to the public at nine for viewing so it's going to be great we always have a student section
which is fun and varied and what is there will have GM will be bringing cars again they always
bring some concept cars for us we have collectors and shops from around the world from around the
country that will will be bringing exquisite examples of a variety of eras of cars yes so that's
going to be I mean there's a reason it's your favorite weekend oh it's everything about it is great
and last year GM heritage center brought the 59 stingray racer a car that absolutely cannot
be replaced and it's the car that the second gen Corvettes were based off of and I got a ton
of pictures with my 65 stingray next to that and uh oh I'm so proud of all that stuff I got cool
really cool pictures of my car next to a car that the guys from GM heritage center said it was
valued at $35 million nice and they gave me zero grief about taking pictures with that car it was
really really cool I also expect ped wad is going to be done in fact I know that for a fact I've
made a hotel reservation and John Sacramento might be coming along too I've been talking to him this
week so excited to have them all righty how can people support the automotive restoration program
well I want to tell you a little bit about a new club that we have starting up for our alumni
and you are an alum Brett yes I know yes I'm targeting you with this comment but
I shared a little bit about about smoky blue and being the founder and how he
how he really embodies a lot of the spirit and fun that I think our students also possess and so
we're starting a new group it's a participation group so it doesn't matter how much you give it's
just that you make some kind of a contribution to support auto restoration and we're going to call
it smoky's club okay and if alums make a gift smoky's club they're going to get some special
swag that only alums who donate can get considering us we got a special I don't know if it will be a
hat or sure I'm not sure yet what it will be um but we really want to highlight to our current
students the support of our alums because a lot of the students who've been through the program
you know they've received scholarship support or they've traveled or they've been a part of
cars club and all of those things are because other people contributed and so it's a great way
for our alums to participate without a big dollar expectation of course we won't turn down big
dollars but it's really more about a statement of support and then we also have a new giving club
called the driver's circle for anybody who makes a gift to auto restoration and now through June
30th the Carey and Will Singleton out of Costa Mesa California Matt Goist you may know he's a
grad and they've hosted interns through the years but Will and Carey stepped up and made a million
dollar matching gift challenge for auto restoration and so now through June 30th any gifts given will
be matched by them and so we have a lot of ways to financially support the program but there are
other ways as well and that is invite students to your events post them let them see your cars
experience your cars learn from your wisdom I mean there's just lots of ways you can be a part of
our community and it isn't always about monetary gifts a lot of times it's about showing up and
being present offering your expertise and that's a really important part of what people do to
support our students as well you can just go to McPherson College giving and google that and it'll
pull up a page you designate to auto restoration that gift is automatically matched through the
Singleton's challenge and we'll go to support what we're doing is there anything else you would
like to discuss any new projects in the shops we do have some new things that have come in one in
particular two in particular you'll appreciate but I'll start with we have a 1919 Stanley Steamer
oh cool a 1906 Ford Model N which is interesting and unique we're expecting a 1965 Chevy C10 pickup
okay a lot a lot of diversity right there in those three we also recently got a right hand drive
a 1968 Mini Cooper which is red and white and really fun to drive and the one that you will
appreciate in particular Brett we have two Corvettes in the shop right now we have a 62
and a 71 oh no we got your car there not your car but no but but I've had very close you know I've
got the 1960 but also had a 1970 coupe that showed me just how frustrated you can be
and uh spent a lot of nights working on that car and then going inside and trying to figure out
how in the hell do you rinse fiberglass out of your skin yeah and it's it's not easily done
well Amanda thank you for being on uh we always appreciate it we've been speaking with Amanda
Gutierrez uh please tell us where we can find you online and on social media
mcautoresto is where you can find us on instagram and then also on facebook
we're McPherson college automotive restoration there's always cool stuff happening there
Amanda thank you for being on as always thank you guys um it's always fun having Amanda with us
I can't believe we went two and a half years oh well you know she's right in the lights get busy
man stuff is just busy and it's it's cool that she was willing to come back on
well and she is a supremely busy individual yeah and she has done more traveling and more speaking
and has been a really magnificent ambassador for the college and especially that program
and you know working for the magazine I get sent a lot of places to cover a lot of stuff
I always run into her someplace yeah and so you know she's always promoting the college
and the program and the program's one of those things it's a little like skydiving
I mean you gotta experience it to get it yeah and anybody if you've ever been interested in
learning how to restore cars and they take they do take adult students yes they do um yeah
Apprentices yeah I am I'm using that I like that that's cool I wish it was original but it just
it fits me so hard right now yeah well as they do with my little bitty arms trying to change the
Holy Carburet well it didn't used to be so tough hey hey hey hey I resemble that remark knock it off
uh anyway she does do such uh great work promoting the college and the program
that she doesn't have a whole lot of time yeah and she is one of my good friends and I do love
Amanda to death and I wish we had her on more often and so I have to make a real point to start
asking her more often yeah and also uh giving her a long lead time yeah you know I it's surprising
that uh driven radio show is not at the top of her list for people to reach out to anytime anything
goes on there but be that as it may yeah it's so nice pardon me well I changed to a larger hat sir
but it was it's awesome that she was willing to jump on and and you know between her and Luke and
and the people down there is so cool and at some point as God is my witness I missed it this year
I I set the money aside I just went to pull the trigger at the last possible minute because that's
kind of my modus operandi oh to go to the the summer program yeah the summer program oh my god it's
so cool I thought you were gonna say you finally caved and you were gonna go to car show weekend
with me well if I I was looking at the date may second I'm like I wonder if I could get the
t-bird rolling by then I'm gonna say no because I know me but there's always somebody you can call
yeah with with the car uh or even ride along no there's somebody you can call who can't help you
hahaha his name might be Darrell Ossopic Darrell Ossopic what's that number Ossopic automotive
5920 Merriam Lane that's 913-831-3613 uh you can call him with your old car concerns he's gonna
know what I almost called him today I'm like I want to take one more stab at that effin carburetor
and if I just can't get it dialed in then you know it's running it's better than the last car I took
to him which four of the eight cylinders weren't running but this one's you know it's got fresh
spark plugs got a fresh uh carburetor on it and the great thing was it wasn't even four all on the
same side it was just a random thing was just hurting but uh uh oh and the the uh spark plugs I
pulled out of this one were just black as night it was a little bit it was burning a little
rich uh it does run a lot better now uh if you know if Darrell sees your your t-bird now he's gonna
say hey look you've moved up in the world this one's not nearly so screwy as the last one you've
got a much nicer one that doesn't run right much much nicer non-running car thank you for spending
