If you are, if you are a 19 year old, perhaps stationed at Camp Lejeune, and you go and
get yourself a pen fed loan for a car to then take to, you know, just burn some R&R and
some rubber while leaving a, you know, any sort of gathering with pedestrians around.

You might find yourself purchasing a Ford Mustang.

In time immemorial, whether that be today, whether this be late 1964, all of these were
options for you.
And I think we just want to spend, burn an episode in addition to burning some rubber,
or just discussing all that is the Ford Mustang.
You know, it's kind of fun, right?
Because we, we kind of, and I think it's by default, we don't, we certainly don't force
ourselves because this is just the way we are.
We focus on the more like off the beaten path kind of vehicles.
And I think that's very clear to anyone that's even listed a half an episode, the Mustang,
a very common sports car, but there are some pretty cool variants that are interesting
to me at least.
And I, I'm actually super pumped to talk about them because I still get excited.
Like when someone like rolls up with a super clean, and they're all in cool colors pretty
much.
Boss 302, for example.

Cool frigging car.
I mean, there, and there's a, there, you've got a lot of options in Mustang world for
interesting and cool stuff.
Back to day one, back to what mid April 1964 is when that car launched and to current.
And I've driven a bunch of different Mustangs, different flavors.
I know you've driven a whole bunch of different Mustangs and whole different flavors and I,
and obviously we're going to have some stuff that overlaps.
Like what is your experience with the Mustang?
Like what have you played with?
What, what is kind of stuck in your craw as something that was good or something that
was bad?

Let's talk Mustang.
Like what, and your experience with the Mustang?
It's real easy to overlook like the modern, like the, ever since the induction of the
Coyote motor, Mustangs have gotten cripplingly fast, like just unbelievably good.
Like from the factory, like an automatic 5-0 Mustang from 2012 will dust most things on
the road.
It's just, it's wild how capable they are and how comfortable they are.
Have you, I'm sure you've spent some time.
I know I'm not counting like the GT350s, GT500s and all the other modern iterations, but just
a Mustang GT from the past decade is a really good car, like a really good car.
You know what's funny?
I haven't, I've never driven a Coyote powered car.
I've yet to drive one.
I've driven.
Dude.
I've driven an EcoBoost.
I've driven GT350, I've driven a V6, six-speed car, not performance pack, but just like the
V6, and they're all good and competent.
And the GT350 is kind of stratosphericly great to drive.
But yeah, by all accounts, just bang for your buck.

Great piece of kit.
That's what I'm saying.
And the Coyote has been like inching itself up in the horsepower category too late.
Like it came out with 420 and Mustang truthers get out there and just beat on your, beat
on your audio system, whatever you're listening to, because I might be wrong.
But it started off around 420 for the five-liter Coyote motor, and then it went, yeah.
And then it went up in increments of 69.
No, but it went up to wait to 460 something, not even a joke, but true story, out of a
naturally aspirated five-liter, which is like some super car shit like a couple of
decades ago, right?
Like for a naturally aspirated motor to put that, but I will tell you, you won't be let
down if you get in a six-speed performance pack Mustang GT, like a more modern-ish one.
Go back like five years even.
Dude, you're going to be like, how the fuck is this a vanilla GT Mustang?
So with the Coyote, first year of the Coyote was 12 or was it 11?
I think it was 11.
And then 10 was the crossover year where you had the new body style, but you still have
the 4-6.
People probably were greatly fucking injured the following year when that horsepower got
bumped up by a hundred plus, dude.
It's so horrible.
Yeah.
So it's I can't log into my Facebook is fighting me right now.
I wanted to look on Marketplace and just see what an 11 or 12 would bring us on the market
right now.
I reviewed, what did I review?
Was it a was it a 15 or was it a 2018?
I can't remember.
I did a Mustang GT review.
It got zero views deservingly, but it's just a Mustang GT.
But truth be told, it was like almost faster.
It was like the same speed as like an E 92 competition.
Sure.
Like, which is crazy to think.
And this is an automatic Mustang, which does those eight speeds and later the ten
speeds are lightning quick autos.
Like you're not going to match it with the manual to take the manual every day of the week,
but that automatic is fast and just looking real quick.
Just on cars and bids, like the last one that sold a 12 GT premium.
Oh, this is a blower.
Somebody put a supercharge on this supercharger on it.
A six speed out of Akron.
So you're going to have for us 15 grand and then here's another one.
Here's another non supercharged one, a blue one.
Looks like a nice car.
15 to 50.
So, yeah, 15, 15 grand is the money for one of these.
Oh, and they the ones we would traffic and go go under that, of course.
But the takeaway from the review was like, is this the performance benchmark for a car?
Joe Schmo can go into a dealership with not that much cash and drive away with.
And it's kind of is it's kind of a 19 year old service member.

But I kind of want to focus on some of the cooler ones.

One of my favorites, dude, and I like I like a Fox body.
I really I really get behind a Fox body.
I love how they look.
I love the the ceiling is like unfathomably high for building those cars.
The aftermarket is just beautiful.
Dude, I still like an SVO.
I really never driven one there.
So have you driven?
So I've never driven anything with the turbocharged two, three in it.
You've driven a three XR two, haven't you?

Well, no, the Mercury with another Capri XR two.

and a three speed auto XR four T I.
So I kind of don't really count that similar.
So the way the power is is kind of fun, right?
Because it's like the two three I still won't be.
This is stupid aside, but take a Mazda.
Let's take a Mazda six.
Mazda Speed six will do a drivetrain powertrain swap into an SVO.
Keep it two three turbo, except bump it to two seventy four and all will drive.
That'd be a cool car.
But anyway, that's that's insane.
But that two three turbo is it's super torquey
and it comes on like eighties fashion turbo lag turbo lag.
Off center hood scoop, which I always get behind
the asymmetric features of cars in the eighties.
The more aero treatment front end.
I dig it, dude.
I really dig SVOs, except they are almost always trashed.
Yeah, you know, they just didn't garner the garner the respect of a GT.
And can I just add?
No, and I want to jump onto that because there was a time.
You know, in the mid two thousands when like peak fast and furious.
Iffication, you know, like hot import nights
and the tuner car thing was like in full force.
Right. And you had this kind of air of
domestics versus imports where it was like, you know,
the new freshly returned Camaro and and and, you know,
the Mustang GT with 300 horsepower and and you had all that.
And I always thought at the time then in period
that they should bring the SVO back and do a as like a lighter,
like more import centric tuner car
version where you had a where you had a turbo four cylinder,
give it like an aluminum hood and some like really light bits and make it
like the the tunable drift kid one.
Got it. And we eventually got that.
But unfortunately, it was in the form of the EcoBoost,
which I think which is OK.
And I've driven an EcoBoost.
It was quite OK. Yeah.
And it was fine.
But it wasn't really set.
That was more like, oh, here's the entry Mustang instead of like,
here's the which what the SVO was, which is here's a just a different
performance machine. Yep.
And a different in the 80s, it was we're capitalizing on the turbo hype.
And the fact that like this is the tech like the the decade of the turbo.
And I think they could have done that in the mid aughts
in the like in the heart in the heat of the tuner car scene.
You know, and all they would have had to do is like pay Paramount
or make the Fast and the Furious movies to have it in Tokyo drift.
And they would have sold them.
They couldn't I mean, Saline was it, right?
Like the Saline body kits at that time, slapping a turbo in there.
Although they did they did go with like the Terminator Cobra
is with a supercharger.
But that's a whole different animal, right?
Then we're talking about that was more.
That was more like, you know, very serious, the tuner car thing.
And yeah, you can tune the hell out of this car.
But this is like you take this to the open drag strip in your put on county.
And then you run the eighth mile because there's not enough room for the quarter.
And you just destroy everything in your Terminator.
And it was just like, oh, it's waving an American flag.
And have you have you driven a Terminator?
You have. They're they're fucking great.
They're like, I really good.
A stock one.
And like, I know it's rated at like 390 horsepower,
but it feels every bit of like 450 when you get on it.
Like what? Well, I mean, it's got to just torque forever.
Dude, supercharger on like instant boil.
It's so good.
And it's really a super low mile one.
I drove like a 7000 mile stock one.
OK. And good cars.
Really good cars, heavy clutch, just like click, clack,
like not what it feels right, but like bolt action, shifter.
It feels appropriate versus when you get in someone's like,
I don't know, G 37 with like a heavy clutch, right?
Doesn't make doesn't make any sense.
But in that car, it just it just feels serious.
You get the wine. They're good out of all the new edge,
kind of like my staying designs.
I think that one looks so beefy, dude.
Yeah, the beefier front bumper and and those like
chrome or polished five spokes that kind of just work.
Freaking killer car, dude.
Yeah, those are great.
And they're getting there.
They're they're kind of worth money now if you find a clean one,
which is not easy to do because they were absolutely hammered immediately,
like with modified and just destroyed.
Yeah, people have been squirreled them away and those are good.
Yeah, I'd take a Mr.
Chrome, I think would be my my lean to any of those things.
Yeah, but Mr.
Chrome is just it's so fucking doesn't make sense today.
That's why I want it.
Yeah, but SVO wise, dude, going back to the SVO.
It's just when you find them,
they always need like this laundry list of repairs, right?
Because they're always sat put away.
I guess it was hard to keep everything running back then
because turbo technology, 80s turbo technology,
we all know it can be quite a bit different than what it is today.
So I always see them pop up and they're like five to eight for an SVO, right?
They're raising that right in that spot.
But it's always up.
Like it's been parked for three years.
It's P&O, it's all the, you know, all the, you know, all the right.
Ran one parked all that kind of fun stuff.
Engines have taken a part just needs a fuel pump.
And they're like, dude, I the tax are from like 2011.
Just like, oh, man, or runs great.
And it shows it idling in the check engine like still on.
It's like, that's my favorite thing.
I'm like, don't take that photo.
That photo does no one justice.
Those are good.
Yeah, no, those are, um, which is interesting because Fox bodies, I've never.
Oh, I know people that are like deeply into Fox bodies.
And I've driven a handful of them.
And I've driven some good ones to the point where like I get in and I'm like.
Like shut the door and I look around and I'm like touching the touch points.
I'm like, this car fucking sucks.
Come on.
The interior is like, it just, and then I drive it.
I'm like, OK, I kind of get it.
Like it, you know, is it super fast?
No, but it drives good and it's, it's, it's exciting and it makes good noises.
And like, I get it, but I know people that are like.
Deep, deep, deep, deep into.
Five, oh, fandom.
And I've known this forever, like when I was in, when I was in, I remember
being in middle school and one of my buddies, it was like eighth grade.
We weren't about to go get cars.
We're several years away from getting cars and he had a subscription to, um,
what was it, like five, uh, was it five, oh, and fast forge or something like that?
Or like foxes and fast.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was just like just only for like five, oh, mustangs.
Like Fox bodies and, uh, and that was it.
And like he had a subscription to it.
And I was like, dude, like he's like, oh, I'm going to get one of these.
And I've got it all mapped out.
And he like, he wrote out all the mods he was going to do and stuff like this.
And this was in like the late nineties.
Um, and that's like, if you, you can look on auctions of these like hyper low
mile ones, people were paying 150 grand for like a delivery mile.
You can't get into a running and driving box body under 10 now.
You just, you literally can't.
I know.
And what's wildest, we were just like, oh, you can get like a sub hundred
thousand mile 2012 GT six speed for 15, which would destroy
a Fox body in every, every aspect of a performance challenge.
And if it doesn't have the, um, nostalgia, no, no, but like, I don't know,
buy the SVT if you want the nostalgia.
If you wanted to drive like crap, as by compared to a 2012, um, but you want
the nostalgia to do that or buy the sprint turbo behind me.
You know, I don't know, but it's, it is funny, slightly different, mildly.
Um, yeah, so it's, it's really interesting.
Like the, the, the love for the Fox body and how that goes on.
And dude, I think they just, I, what would be your go-to?
That would be it.
That would be the Fox body you would get would be an SVO.
I honestly, yeah, if I could find a clean, uh, SVO, I don't mind bringing a rack,
um, but usually they're in a really rough state.
I'd love to have a project SVO tell you the truth.
Um, but I do, I would take any flavor of Fox body.
I think they're super cool.
Uh, like I said before, the aftermarket is just so intense for these cars.
Like anything you want, dude, uh, it's, it's so plug and play.
It's so accessible.
This is, I don't know, they look great, man.
I think the, the later ones look great.
Like the late eighties, early nineties ones, the hatches, the notch back.
Yeah.
Like a 93 Cobra with the amber, you've got the amber and the tail lights and
you've got like the turbine wheels.
Those look really good.
They're always mentally in my brain.
They're always that, um, I don't remember the name of the teal.
Um, but they're always that teal color.

like go, I don't know, like they feels more like a, and this is going to, this
is not going to make sense, but bear with me.
It feels more like a Mustang for like having a Mustang than having a five

or was in more invoke, like those earlier cars, they feel more like kind of
rough around the edges, more like muscle car E and that kind of doesn't make

any of those edges, but it just, it looked a little smoother, right?
Like the later ones.
I think they look more chunky, more like, more thought out.
And I do dig on that.
Like an early nineties one, I really get a kick out of how good they look.
Or like a really early, like a 79 with like, that really looks like the
interior is like, Oh, this is a seventies car.

Um, you get some like plaid interior choices and they had that like terrible,
like 79 or 80 Cobra.
It was like, yeah, yeah, it was just kind of terrible, but kind of why I want
the, I like the terrible ones.

if you can look past like the Creeks and rattles of owning a Mustang,
like it's a huge performance bang for your buck.
Similar to like the, uh, the bullet of that same generation, the bullet Mustangs,
the green with the, the Magnum 500 wheels or not Magnum 500, the torque thrust style.

Those dude, to be honest, though, the 2000 and was it 2005, 2006 bullet is my
favorite because it has the retro design.
That one just looks more like more, more composed, more, more well thought out.

Like these things, God, you could get a Mark III for $6,000 to $8,000 for damn near,
I don't know, 10 years after they came out.
And now you're 15 for a clean one.
They're cool.
I've never owned one and I've owned a million.
I've owned a couple of Mark I's, a million Mark II's.
I've never had an opportunity to own a Mark III.
And I've never even driven a Mark III.
I'd love to.
You know, they were known for head gasket failures and being heavy.
But now like a fully decked out one of those, it's like 36, 3700 pounds.
That was heavy then.
And I bet it still drives heavy.
Toyota and head gasket started that period.
It was just, it was just the thing, right?
So I drove and rode in a modified, like huge fucking turbo Mark III automatic.
Which is like, apparently the automatics were insanely robust.
Yeah.
And this is for some reason.
You're the ace in, yeah.
Big, big tough unit.
So you could put nasty power through them.
And it was the most like insanely loud, just like turbo spoo up event.
Like the turbo he was running with an, like it had an X, had an external waste gate that
just fucking screamed like metal ripping apart at like 4500 RPM,
which is how long you waited for the turbo to even make a boost.
And I just remember it was like a highway pole car.
Remember when that was a thing in like the, what time am I talking?
Like 2009 time period, 2008 time.
People were building, yeah, people were building like highway pole cars.
In like 1320 video, like all that kind of stuff.
So it was like, it was in that, that kind of, just so you know,
I'm painting the full picture for you to understand my experience.
That thing was absolutely hilarious.
And like the rear would break loose.
It was just big heavy car, but for highway poles didn't matter
because you're already at speed.
You had no mass to overcome inertia and whatnot.
But what a fun car.
I'd like a lightly mod, like a lightly modded one.
Yeah.
To take on a rally and it would probably kind of fall apart on a rally
because it's kind of big and heavy, but like, I don't think it would.
I don't, because the 300 ZX twin turbo is big and heavy,
often critiqued for being a little too heavy.
They're, I think they're a little lighter.
It's close.

They're definitely shorter.

But that 300 ZX was way better than I thought in the twisties.
So third mark threes, man, give them the respect they deserve.

And you had the gray trim instead of the painted trim
and a not airbag steering wheel, but you got 232 horsepower.

I have been, it's sparse and very far in between, but still working on the
GeoTracker issue.
I told you I took the timing belt apart last time.
Well, didn't take it apart.
Took the front of the engine off so I can see the time belt.
My marks perfectly.
I sent you the photos, photo evidence, my friend.
So everything's good there, which leaves me in a situation where I have to put the front
of the engine back on, put the radiator back in.
That's always fun.
Did that, I get it all back together and, you know, turn the key.
And it's still a check engine light, right?
So I'm like, okay, let's, let's really see what's going on.
So I wanted to pull that code because sometimes there is just a, I don't know why.
I don't know why.
And that's like the, you jump, you jump, little pin, pin jumper.
So my nine year old son, Teddy knows how to do that now because I showed him how to,
the two diagnostic port, he needs to jump with a paperclip and then go ahead and turn
the key on.
And it did a code 12.
Now on these sidekicks.
Get fucked, is that all it says?
It's like you fucking run.
It just means run.
It actually says run.
There's a little look behind you and this light bulb that says run.
But it's a, no, it's actually their code for no faults.
And I'm like, that is the most useless fucking thing.
Wait, it gets weirder.
If you, you guys want to hear some deep geotrackers Suzuki sidekick trivia, stay tuned.
So it, code 12 is no codes.
And I'm like, oh, that's cool.
But if you turn the battery off and restart it or just, you know, let it reset,
it'll come back, that check engine light, which is a real pain in the dick, but no code.
So I look it up.
I'm like, what the fuck is going on?
I start reading the forums, which you should always do for geotrackers.
Get in there and start reading those old posts from like 2004.
There, dude, under, as you can pull this panel under the steering column,
ask me how I know so much from swapping 20 gauge clusters out.
There is, if you go to the left a little bit, reach in there.
There is an honest to God from the factory toggle switch for check engine lights.
I can't make this up, right?
Is it, is it like, is it like a, okay, hear me out.
Is, is that like a, you hit the switch to, to test the diagnostic system?
Like you flip the switch to make sure that like the module that like
blinks and the actual check engine light work and you go, okay, well that works.
No, it's, flip it off.
Like it's a, just a reset check engine light because people are like, oh,
I have this misfire and I just do this and I sell the car.
And I'm like, that's fucked because then it'll still have to go through
so many drive cycles before.
No, it actually resets the check engine light.
But the thing is, like if it is, if there is a fault, it instantly comes back.
That switch does nothing.
So it's only for that code 12, which is like, it's not only tied to some kind of
bullshit, but it's, people do use that.
So that's another thing.
If you're buying trackers and sidekicks, drive it for a little bit and then
make sure the smog was done legitimately because they can flip that switch
and cut the check engine light.
And I think if you shut it off, the check engine light won't illuminate.
Not even start up.
So you flip the switch and then shut it down.
Why?
Why is this a thing?
But anyway, so I'm like, holy shit, there's a real toggle switch and it looks after
market.
I'm not joking, but it was from the factory.
It's like a chrome dip switch.
It's so stupid.
Yeah, dude.
It's like what you'd have for your fucking science fair project that you did.
Like, here's how electricity gets through your neighborhood.
Yeah.
You flip it in a paper mache volcano, just erupts in the back seat.
Like, God damn it.
What the hell?

But no, dude.
So that I did that, turned the car back on check engine like, sure, shit is gone.
So there's no codes.
Does it run?
It's still fucking vibrating at idle.
Like mad, mad vibration.

I'm going to actually do the timing light and check my ignition timing just to make
sure something isn't crazy.
But I don't think so.
And it's only at idle.
Like if you tip and throttle it.
Nothing.
Metal is out when you drive it.
No lack of power.
None of the other.
Like if your ignition timing is way off, you know how sometimes it like, or like the
timing belt, like that's kind of what made me think it wasn't the timing belt being
off because it'll always run like dog shit if you're off by a tooth.
And you'll have a, although it is 84 horsepower, it's easy to pick up when
you're missing a few ponies.
Dude, yeah, that's what I've been playing with.
Next is ignition timing checking.
And after that, it's got to be, it's got to be the other motor mount that I didn't do.
It's like so completely shitty that I'm getting an insane amount.
Now that you've got all the other mounts, it's just like.
Somehow localized to.
I don't know, man.
This is the fun shit I chase after.
You know, it went from cleaning out the entire EGR system.
Oh, I have to do this.
Exposing the timing belt again.
And now this, but that toggle switch is a fun little fact.
I want a little sidekick tracker trivia.
Dude, how funny is that shit?
Dude, it looks so, dude, it looks like an aftermarket like Pep Boys kill switch.
Fuck it.
I love these cars.
How about you, man, turning any wrenches?
General maintenance.
So I love that shit.
Yeah.
Just on the wife's daily, the first generation high high Highlander hybrid.
And it's funny.
It's the car's totally a totally adequate machine.
We've never had any problems with it.
I've bought it in 2022.
Okay.
2022, 2023, somewhere in there, through a friend of the pod car donation services.
And they had 91,000 miles long then.
We now have 133 on it.
Her commute is tiny.
It's under a mile each way.
But you know, that's the car.
Oh, we're going to drive to Disneyland.
We take that car, whatever.
Makes sense.
Yeah.
We're going to go to the snow.
We go up there.
It's like the loaded up, you know, limited four wheel drive, all the things, right?
It's right, right.
And so, and it's been, it's been flawless.
But it's kind of, it's like kind of uninspiring.
It's like silver with a gray leather interior.
Okay.
You know, and it's like the daily, so it's got like daily driver problems,
which is mostly that it's like perpetually dirty and like needs to get cleaned out.
And like, it's just uninspiring, right?
So it's like, maybe we'll please it one day, whatever.
And then any, any time I do any kind of work or maintenance on it,
I pop the hood and I look around.
I'm looking for like, okay, you know, I do the standard, the standard stuff.
I'm going to change the oil, but while I'm here, let me look at like,
how are my battery terminals?
How are all my fluids?
Does anything look like it's starting to leak or seek a little bit?
How are, let me check the air filter.
And everything is always perfect.
Freaking Toyota's, man.
It's like this car has never leaked a drop of anything in its life.
There's not even like a beginning of like dirty buildup around
like where the valve covered gas gets might be nothing.
Everything is perfect.
All the fluids look perfect.
Even on this, and we just go, I learned on this and on my,
I don't know if your CT 200H is like this, but mine is.
Like a lot of times I'm kind of wary about waiting to do my oil changes at the
service indicator reminder.
Because I feel like a lot of times they'll stretch out a little longer
than I would normally want to do an oil change.
Do you mean on time or mileage?
On whatever the thing that comes up on the dash and says,
you're due for maintenance soon.
Because in theory on these cars, it will take into account
the last time you reset that light, the mileage of where you reset that light.
In addition to your driving habits.
Yeah, my CT set for 5,000, which is when I do my oil changes.
So my CT, like the Highlander, it's just set to whatever it feels like.
Whether it's 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, 42, 86, 6,172, it's not like a hard line.
It's based upon, you bought the Skynet edition.
It's self-aware.
It is.
And so just wait for the maintenance reminder.
Okay, great.
And a lot, but a lot of times on those ones where it's like variable
and it's the Skynet edition, Cyberdyne technology is involved.
I'm always a little wary of it.
And I, because I feel like it stretches it out longer.
But each time I go, especially on this Highlander, on my Lexus 2,
but definitely on the Highlander, to go the reminders up and I look,
because I reset one of the two trips, trip A or trip B.
I usually reset trip B every time I change the oil.
So I can kind of know exactly when it's kicking on.
And this one, it was like, whatever, 40, like 4,300 miles or something.
Okay, that feels about right.
I look at it, it's dead on full and it's like golden honey.
I was like, this looks great.
Like, I don't have to break my neck to change this today,
but I'm just going to, I'm going to do it.
I'm here.
Sure.
Whatever.
Right.
What a, what a good appliance this thing has been.
You know, I just, there, I have no excuse.
It's like, I walk away from it, like changing the oil on it
and putting it up and I put everything away.
And I'm just like, or not replacing that thing anytime soon.
Uh-uh.
Exactly.
Like good thinking about it.
Just like, well, you know, if this and like the new R2 comes out
to be kind of cool, like for what my wife does with the car,
like an EV would be a very nice thing and having some new amenities
and this and that.
And then I'm like, oh dude, this car has like 400,000 more miles in it
of, of just dutiful service.
Like, right.
So it's going to be due for tire soon.
So I'm going to, I'm going to order tires.
I think I want to do cross climates, Michelin cross climates.
Okay.
Just for, you know, for the summer that we're going to, I guess.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Get ready for it.
But yeah, just, um, yeah.
So I've got like nothing like some boring maintenance on the boring daily
to like make you feel good about your automotive daily driver decisions.
So nice.
That's all I've done so far is some maintenance, but you know,
I got more stuff to work on here soon.
