In a world with entirely too many shows about cars, this is another Pointless Automotive
podcast.
Oh no!
What have we done?
Crippling pressure.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hi.
How are you?
Chat to the wick.
Greetings.
Doing okay, man?
Christ.
I'm cracking a Kirkland logger, which is actually a deschutes.
I always want to say French things way too French.
So how would a normal person say deschutes?
Deschutes.
Deschutes.
Well, you know, I'm not sure, was Central Oregon founded by the French because I don't
believe it was.
It totally wasn't, but that's a very French sounding word.
It is.
Well, they're out of Bend, Oregon, deschutes, the movie.
That is correct.
Maybe it's not Algonquin because that's not where they lived, but whatever the local
native population peeps, maybe it's one of their words.
I don't know.
Maybe.
I'm not up on my, it is the high desert, though.
I know that.
Bend, Oregon, high desert country.
That's correct.
On that note, I guess, I'm doing okay.
I'm doing good.
I'm doing good.
I'm drinking, although I might mix it up.
I don't know, because I still have some of those, the two foggy, two furious or whatever
beers in my mini fridge behind me, but until then I'm hydrating.
I'm a thirsty boy, so I'm doing some.
Okay.
Can I vent for a second?
Because I love going off on tangents on our intros.
We have never, ever launched an episode with an appropriate intro, but yeah, let's not
break that habit now.
Yeah.
And we also won't discuss genital surgery like we have in the past.
No, I just simply want to.
But I guess I'll just cancel half my show then.
Yeah.
No, just save it for a project, maybe a different pee for the PCP, but no, the, so this is just
like the Whole Foods 365 sparkling water that I have here in my hand, black cherry, and
it's fine.
It's unremarkable.
It's greatest attribute is that it's cold, like more quote unquote name brand sparkling
waters.
Expensive.
Suddenly expensive.
Sure.
Like, oh, like a whatever, like a 12 pack of like, or eight pack, I think even of like
Remula Croy's or like $8 or something.
It's wild.
Yeah.
Which whatever, it's like the most, maybe the most like first world upper, lower, middle
class problem possible.
But yeah, tap water with an essence of fruit.
Sure.
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah, it got, it got, yeah, it got touched by a grapefruit.
No, if you've been touched by a grapefruit, make sure to call our law office.
Yeah.
If you're sparkling water served in Camp Lejeune, no, but they did not serve that there.
Yeah.
For sure.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I've got like, it's got like a tint of mercury or just depleted uranium.
Hmm.
So, not at all related to any of that.
Actually, no, I take it back.
Let's hear it.
If you are, if you are a 19 year old, perhaps stationed at Camp Lejeune, and you go and
get yourself a pen fed loan for a car to then take to, you know, just burn some R&R and
some rubber while leaving a, you know, any sort of gathering with pedestrians around.
Right.
You might find yourself purchasing a Ford Mustang.
Oh.
In time immemorial, whether that be today, whether this be late 1964, all of these were
options for you.
And I think we just want to spend, burn an episode in addition to burning some rubber,
or just discussing all that is the Ford Mustang.
You know, it's kind of fun, right?
Because we, we kind of, and I think it's by default, we don't, we certainly don't force
ourselves because this is just the way we are.
We focus on the more like off the beaten path kind of vehicles.
And I think that's very clear to anyone that's even listed a half an episode, the Mustang,
a very common sports car, but there are some pretty cool variants that are interesting
to me at least.
And I, I'm actually super pumped to talk about them because I still get excited.
Like when someone like rolls up with a super clean, and they're all in cool colors pretty
much.
Boss 302, for example.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Cool frigging car.
I mean, there, and there's a, there, you've got a lot of options in Mustang world for
interesting and cool stuff.
Back to day one, back to what mid April 1964 is when that car launched and to current.
And I've driven a bunch of different Mustangs, different flavors.
I know you've driven a whole bunch of different Mustangs and whole different flavors and I,
and obviously we're going to have some stuff that overlaps.
Like what is your experience with the Mustang?
Like what have you played with?
What, what is kind of stuck in your craw as something that was good or something that
was bad?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Let's talk Mustang.
Like what, and your experience with the Mustang?
It's real easy to overlook like the modern, like the, ever since the induction of the
Coyote motor, Mustangs have gotten cripplingly fast, like just unbelievably good.
Like from the factory, like an automatic 5-0 Mustang from 2012 will dust most things on
the road.
It's just, it's wild how capable they are and how comfortable they are.
Have you, I'm sure you've spent some time.
I know I'm not counting like the GT350s, GT500s and all the other modern iterations, but just
a Mustang GT from the past decade is a really good car, like a really good car.
You know what's funny?
I haven't, I've never driven a Coyote powered car.
I've yet to drive one.
I've driven.
Dude.
I've driven an EcoBoost.
I've driven GT350, I've driven a V6, six-speed car, not performance pack, but just like the
V6, and they're all good and competent.
And the GT350 is kind of stratosphericly great to drive.
But yeah, by all accounts, just bang for your buck.
Great.
Great piece of kit.
That's what I'm saying.
And the Coyote has been like inching itself up in the horsepower category too late.
Like it came out with 420 and Mustang truthers get out there and just beat on your, beat
on your audio system, whatever you're listening to, because I might be wrong.
But it started off around 420 for the five-liter Coyote motor, and then it went, yeah.
And then it went up in increments of 69.
No, but it went up to wait to 460 something, not even a joke, but true story, out of a
naturally aspirated five-liter, which is like some super car shit like a couple of
decades ago, right?
Like for a naturally aspirated motor to put that, but I will tell you, you won't be let
down if you get in a six-speed performance pack Mustang GT, like a more modern-ish one.
Go back like five years even.
Dude, you're going to be like, how the fuck is this a vanilla GT Mustang?
So with the Coyote, first year of the Coyote was 12 or was it 11?
I think it was 11.
And then 10 was the crossover year where you had the new body style, but you still have
the 4-6.
People probably were greatly fucking injured the following year when that horsepower got
bumped up by a hundred plus, dude.
It's so horrible.
Yeah.
So it's I can't log into my Facebook is fighting me right now.
I wanted to look on Marketplace and just see what an 11 or 12 would bring us on the market
right now.
I reviewed, what did I review?
Was it a was it a 15 or was it a 2018?
I can't remember.
I did a Mustang GT review.
It got zero views deservingly, but it's just a Mustang GT.
But truth be told, it was like almost faster.
It was like the same speed as like an E 92 competition.
Sure.
Like, which is crazy to think.
And this is an automatic Mustang, which does those eight speeds and later the ten
speeds are lightning quick autos.
Like you're not going to match it with the manual to take the manual every day of the week,
but that automatic is fast and just looking real quick.
Just on cars and bids, like the last one that sold a 12 GT premium.
Oh, this is a blower.
Somebody put a supercharge on this supercharger on it.
A six speed out of Akron.
So you're going to have for us 15 grand and then here's another one.
Here's another non supercharged one, a blue one.
Looks like a nice car.
15 to 50.
So, yeah, 15, 15 grand is the money for one of these.
Oh, and they the ones we would traffic and go go under that, of course.
But the takeaway from the review was like, is this the performance benchmark for a car?
Joe Schmo can go into a dealership with not that much cash and drive away with.
And it's kind of is it's kind of a 19 year old service member.
Wrap this shit around a telephone pole.
No, it's chrome.
No, you don't do that.
Oh, wait.
Glad you said chrome it did.
Moving along.
No, it's it's it's really like unbelievable to think of what a Mustang GT can do.
But I kind of want to focus on some of the cooler ones.
Not that it's not cool, because I mean, it is cool in its own right.
One of my favorites, dude, and I like I like a Fox body.
I really I really get behind a Fox body.
I love how they look.
I love the the ceiling is like unfathomably high for building those cars.
The aftermarket is just beautiful.
Dude, I still like an SVO.
I really never driven one there.
So have you driven?
So I've never driven anything with the turbocharged two, three in it.
You've driven a three XR two, haven't you?
No, no.
Well, no, the Mercury with another Capri XR two.
You mean the XR four T I XR four T I.
Sorry, XR twos in another episode we're going to talk about.
Sure. Yeah.
Yes. Yes.
XR four T I I.
OK, I have driven around the block
and a three speed auto XR four T I.
So I kind of don't really count that similar.
So the way the power is is kind of fun, right?
Because it's like the two three I still won't be.
This is stupid aside, but take a Mazda.
Let's take a Mazda six.
Mazda Speed six will do a drivetrain powertrain swap into an SVO.
Keep it two three turbo, except bump it to two seventy four and all will drive.
That'd be a cool car.
But anyway, that's that's insane.
But that two three turbo is it's super torquey
and it comes on like eighties fashion turbo lag turbo lag.
Off center hood scoop, which I always get behind
the asymmetric features of cars in the eighties.
The more aero treatment front end.
I dig it, dude.
I really dig SVOs, except they are almost always trashed.
Yeah, you know, they just didn't garner the garner the respect of a GT.
And can I just add?
No, and I want to jump onto that because there was a time.
You know, in the mid two thousands when like peak fast and furious.
Iffication, you know, like hot import nights
and the tuner car thing was like in full force.
Right. And you had this kind of air of
domestics versus imports where it was like, you know,
the new freshly returned Camaro and and and, you know,
the Mustang GT with 300 horsepower and and you had all that.
And I always thought at the time then in period
that they should bring the SVO back and do a as like a lighter,
like more import centric tuner car
version where you had a where you had a turbo four cylinder,
give it like an aluminum hood and some like really light bits and make it
like the the tunable drift kid one.
Got it. And we eventually got that.
But unfortunately, it was in the form of the EcoBoost,
which I think which is OK.
And I've driven an EcoBoost.
It was quite OK. Yeah.
And it was fine.
But it wasn't really set.
That was more like, oh, here's the entry Mustang instead of like,
here's the which what the SVO was, which is here's a just a different
performance machine. Yep.
And a different in the 80s, it was we're capitalizing on the turbo hype.
And the fact that like this is the tech like the the decade of the turbo.
And I think they could have done that in the mid aughts
in the like in the heart in the heat of the tuner car scene.
You know, and all they would have had to do is like pay Paramount
or make the Fast and the Furious movies to have it in Tokyo drift.
And they would have sold them.
They couldn't I mean, Saline was it, right?
Like the Saline body kits at that time, slapping a turbo in there.
Although they did they did go with like the Terminator Cobra
is with a supercharger.
But that's a whole different animal, right?
Then we're talking about that was more.
That was more like, you know, very serious, the tuner car thing.
And yeah, you can tune the hell out of this car.
But this is like you take this to the open drag strip in your put on county.
And then you run the eighth mile because there's not enough room for the quarter.
And you just destroy everything in your Terminator.
And it was just like, oh, it's waving an American flag.
And have you have you driven a Terminator?
You have. They're they're fucking great.
They're like, I really good.
A stock one.
And like, I know it's rated at like 390 horsepower,
but it feels every bit of like 450 when you get on it.
Like what? Well, I mean, it's got to just torque forever.
Dude, supercharger on like instant boil.
It's so good.
And it's really a super low mile one.
I drove like a 7000 mile stock one.
OK. And good cars.
Really good cars, heavy clutch, just like click, clack,
like not what it feels right, but like bolt action, shifter.
It feels appropriate versus when you get in someone's like,
I don't know, G 37 with like a heavy clutch, right?
Doesn't make doesn't make any sense.
But in that car, it just it just feels serious.
You get the wine. They're good out of all the new edge,
kind of like my staying designs.
I think that one looks so beefy, dude.
Yeah, the beefier front bumper and and those like
chrome or polished five spokes that kind of just work.
Freaking killer car, dude.
Yeah, those are great.
And they're getting there.
They're they're kind of worth money now if you find a clean one,
which is not easy to do because they were absolutely hammered immediately,
like with modified and just destroyed.
Yeah, people have been squirreled them away and those are good.
Yeah, I'd take a Mr.
Chrome, I think would be my my lean to any of those things.
Yeah, but Mr.
Chrome is just it's so fucking doesn't make sense today.
That's why I want it.
Yeah, but SVO wise, dude, going back to the SVO.
It's just when you find them,
they always need like this laundry list of repairs, right?
Because they're always sat put away.
I guess it was hard to keep everything running back then
because turbo technology, 80s turbo technology,
we all know it can be quite a bit different than what it is today.
So I always see them pop up and they're like five to eight for an SVO, right?
They're raising that right in that spot.
But it's always up.
Like it's been parked for three years.
It's P&O, it's all the, you know, all the, you know, all the right.
Ran one parked all that kind of fun stuff.
Engines have taken a part just needs a fuel pump.
And they're like, dude, I the tax are from like 2011.
Just like, oh, man, or runs great.
And it shows it idling in the check engine like still on.
It's like, that's my favorite thing.
I'm like, don't take that photo.
That photo does no one justice.
Those are good.
Yeah, no, those are, um, which is interesting because Fox bodies, I've never.
Oh, I know people that are like deeply into Fox bodies.
And I've driven a handful of them.
And I've driven some good ones to the point where like I get in and I'm like.
Like shut the door and I look around and I'm like touching the touch points.
I'm like, this car fucking sucks.
Come on.
The interior is like, it just, and then I drive it.
I'm like, OK, I kind of get it.
Like it, you know, is it super fast?
No, but it drives good and it's, it's, it's exciting and it makes good noises.
And like, I get it, but I know people that are like.
Deep, deep, deep, deep into.
Five, oh, fandom.
And I've known this forever, like when I was in, when I was in, I remember
being in middle school and one of my buddies, it was like eighth grade.
We weren't about to go get cars.
We're several years away from getting cars and he had a subscription to, um,
what was it, like five, uh, was it five, oh, and fast forge or something like that?
Or like foxes and fast.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was just like just only for like five, oh, mustangs.
Like Fox bodies and, uh, and that was it.
And like he had a subscription to it.
And I was like, dude, like he's like, oh, I'm going to get one of these.
And I've got it all mapped out.
And he like, he wrote out all the mods he was going to do and stuff like this.
And this was in like the late nineties.
Um, and that's like, if you, you can look on auctions of these like hyper low
mile ones, people were paying 150 grand for like a delivery mile.
You can't get into a running and driving box body under 10 now.
You just, you literally can't.
I know.
And what's wildest, we were just like, oh, you can get like a sub hundred
thousand mile 2012 GT six speed for 15, which would destroy
a Fox body in every, every aspect of a performance challenge.
And if it doesn't have the, um, nostalgia, no, no, but like, I don't know,
buy the SVT if you want the nostalgia.
If you wanted to drive like crap, as by compared to a 2012, um, but you want
the nostalgia to do that or buy the sprint turbo behind me.
You know, I don't know, but it's, it is funny, slightly different, mildly.
Um, yeah, so it's, it's really interesting.
Like the, the, the love for the Fox body and how that goes on.
And dude, I think they just, I, what would be your go-to?
That would be it.
That would be the Fox body you would get would be an SVO.
I honestly, yeah, if I could find a clean, uh, SVO, I don't mind bringing a rack,
um, but usually they're in a really rough state.
I'd love to have a project SVO tell you the truth.
Um, but I do, I would take any flavor of Fox body.
I think they're super cool.
Uh, like I said before, the aftermarket is just so intense for these cars.
Like anything you want, dude, uh, it's, it's so plug and play.
It's so accessible.
This is, I don't know, they look great, man.
I think the, the later ones look great.
Like the late eighties, early nineties ones, the hatches, the notch back.
Yeah.
Like a 93 Cobra with the amber, you've got the amber and the tail lights and
you've got like the turbine wheels.
Those look really good.
They're always mentally in my brain.
They're always that, um, I don't remember the name of the teal.
Um, but they're always that teal color.
Um, God, what was that called?
Anyway, someone's screaming at their listening device.
Oh, sure.
Yeah.
But, um, but I actually, it's not like Calypso green.
Is it?
I think that was one of the ones it might be Calypso.
Calypso, I think it was one, but they had, um, I'm kind of a sucker for
the pre facelift stuff, like the 85.
So with the square recessed headlights?
Yeah.
And then kind of that, like, kind of like the, kind of like the, the, the
gaping mall grill, for lack of a better way to put it.
Oh, I thought you were talking about the interior panel gaps.
Yeah.
No, exactly.
Gaping mall.
Yeah.
No, that's, that's my username on, on Grindr.
The, um, the, you know, I wish I didn't know that, but I like it, like an, like
an 85 would be cool.
Cause it's the last, it's the last year pre facelift, last year that
carbureted in a GT, um, and I don't know, they're, they're endearing.
They're cool.
Like if I'm going to get one that's going to be like, I kind of want to
like go, I don't know, like they feels more like a, and this is going to, this
is not going to make sense, but bear with me.
It feels more like a Mustang for like having a Mustang than having a five
Oh, because you want a quote unquote, five Oh, that would, like, and you
want it to be like that, the one that was in, you know, the vanilla ice video
or was in more invoke, like those earlier cars, they feel more like kind of
rough around the edges, more like muscle car E and that kind of doesn't make
sense.
And I, I can appreciate that, but yeah, to be fair, they never ironed out
any of those edges, but it just, it looked a little smoother, right?
Like the later ones.
I think they look more chunky, more like, more thought out.
And I do dig on that.
Like an early nineties one, I really get a kick out of how good they look.
Or like a really early, like a 79 with like, that really looks like the
interior is like, Oh, this is a seventies car.
Like, yeah.
Um, you get some like plaid interior choices and they had that like terrible,
like 79 or 80 Cobra.
It was like, yeah, yeah, it was just kind of terrible, but kind of why I want
the, I like the terrible ones.
Have you, have you ever owned a Mustang?
Never owned a Mustang.
No, I've never owned a Mustang, which is a weird thing to say, right?
I think as car, car folks, we should probably make that a different answer.
Um, one, I almost, and this is one I came, I checked out.
I went and got, uh, got a ride, took it for a ride.
Yeah.
It was horribly let down.
And the more I dug into it, the more I was let down.
It was a early 2000s.
I can't remember the exact year.
It was a mock one when they had the shaker hood.
Um, it was in that purpley blue.
I don't want to say grabber blue.
Is that right?
Or is that grabber blue is like the light blue.
It's, yeah, I think you're right.
Yeah, it's called the grabber blue in that year.
I think, I think that was it.
Um, so the color, and they had the stripes, right?
They always had the racing stripes, but it had the shaker hood with,
it was a flat black in that part of the car, the Magnum 500 style wheels.
So, so great looking.
The interior was completely shredded.
The car ran like shit.
It would actually just keep stalling every time it came to a stop.
And that wasn't even the biggest issue.
Um, so God, it was like 60, he was asking 60.
He was foot down, wouldn't move an inch, $6,500.
And I'm just like, I can't do it.
Maybe today it's worth it.
Cause those things traffic like 12 to 15, even from like rough runner and drivers.
But back then they were going for like eight, nine.
So I couldn't, I just couldn't, you know, I couldn't.
That's what 300 horsepower.
I think I think so.
Yeah.
And so I did they tweak.
I can't remember if they had a higher horsepower or lower torque than a regular Mustang.
There was one of the torque.
I do know they made more power.
Yeah.
So I think the trade off was a little torque.
So, um, but the shaker hood was so cool.
I, they look great.
Like if you go back and look at those mock ones, they, they are great looking cars.
They had the white shifter, like I think it was a first shifter.
Um, yeah.
And they got pretty good reviews in period, I remember they're like,
if you can look past like the Creeks and rattles of owning a Mustang,
like it's a huge performance bang for your buck.
Similar to like the, uh, the bullet of that same generation, the bullet Mustangs,
the green with the, the Magnum 500 wheels or not Magnum 500, the torque thrust style.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Those dude, to be honest, though, the 2000 and was it 2005, 2006 bullet is my
favorite because it has the retro design.
That one just looks more like more, more composed, more, more well thought out.
But this, this Mark one is another one of those Mustangs.
Like they just look so cool.
Like it was just, I was just drawn in how, how much personality you did have a
cool exhaust on it.
And when you open up any of those Mustangs, they sound so good.
It was just, it was like, it was just like an experience, right?
Except for that one as a piece of shit.
Um, I still experience on the left, right?
Like, cause you go into it and you see the car sitting in the driveway, right?
When you pull in, you're like, oh fuck.
Yeah.
And then it just goes downhill from there.
But dude, what, I think that's a cool car.
Like, yeah, for sure.
You don't have to be Mustang guy to think that's a cool car when you see a
clean one of those.
Like it's just, it's got a lot of, it's got a lot of personality and it's,
they're all in great colors.
Like that bright yellow is also, I haven't seen one.
Yeah.
I haven't seen one in a clean one in the wild in a long time.
Been a while, right?
Yeah.
Orange, they had an orangey red.
They had the, the grabber blue.
They had that like, yeah, orangey red colors.
And I think you could, did they also have like a, I think that you can get
like a gloss black with the, like the flat black.
You can, yep.
Yeah.
Which is kind of cool.
Yeah.
I like those bright colors with the shaker hood and the stripes though.
It's just, oh, it's good.
The grabber blue is like that color.
Oh, yeah, I know.
I know.
I do, everything in my mind, I could do to fight with myself, like logically
to not buy that car.
Yeah.
No, it's, those are cool.
And it's funny, you mentioned Mach one.
Um, just in the last few weeks, I've driven two Mach ones, but new one, right?
1969 Mach one.
Okay.
Um, and two very different cars.
So one is an original 1969 Mach one 428.
So big block, four speed.
Okay.
Um, red with a red interior, which is pretty.
That's, that's cool.
And it's like a bright red X here with like a brick red interior.
Um, burnout monster.
That's all that car is good for doing.
And not that I was abused, take, abusing the car, but like, I have to make a
drive video, so I have to like run it through the gears and you're just like.
Wheel spin, wheel spin, wheel spin, like at any, it's got, it's got like bias
plies on it.
Sure.
Yeah.
And it lets you know.
Um, but like the steering is sloppy.
The suspension is sloppy.
Like it feels the shift, the shifter is terrible.
Um, still like you get, like it's like it's pure attitude.
Yep.
Right.
And then I drove another one just this past week, another 69 Mach one, but
this one had a, it's black on black, but a complete resto mod done on this thing
in like 2005.
Okay.
So fuel injected 351.
I think on the dyno, it did, it was good for like 380 or 390 at the wheels.
That's serious.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's serious stuff.
Uh, rack and pinion conversion, disc brakes, front and rear.
Okay.
Um, a T five, so at a, a Tremac five speed in it.
Um, drove like a brand new car.
I mean, it was, it was like a complete, a completely different animal.
Lovely to drive.
The other one was just like, you chuckle, but like the, like the, um, the meme, right?
The, I'm in danger.
Right.
That's, that's the experience, right?
This is like, Oh, I can, I can go take this on a mountain road and just like hammer
on this thing all day and it won't care.
Um, and it will actually be performant.
Like it will, it will do, cause it had, it had like, um, uh, it's got like a PS4
S's on it and it's, it's on 17 inch wheel.
Yeah.
It's on, um, you can tell it was a Resto mod from the mid 2000s cause it's got
like the Eleanor style, like Shelby, you've gotten a 60 second style wheel
with the knockoffs and stuff.
Of course.
Um, but wildly different car, similar, like aesthetic, um, but
what, like what a, just like, okay, I can see why someone put big money into
this thing.
Um, cause it's funny cause it's like the thing with Mustangs are they each
have their own like era, right?
Like you've got the sixties to, well, the Mustang too.
The original Mustang, I was waiting for you to say Mustang to Cobra cause there
is a little bit of a wot in me for that, dude.
Agree the King Cobra.
Yeah, dude, blue with the white stripes, please.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's that.
I like, I like the, I like the black with the gold, like the tan interior and
like the, the gold, um, uh, what was on, was, was a big ass snake on the hood.
Right.
Yeah.
There was.
Yeah.
And you think that's when it's officially, you're with a big ass snake.
I'm brand fellows.
Um, but like, yeah.
So there's like the muscle car era stuff.
And then you had the Fox body era, right?
And then you had probably, I would say new edge.
Mm hmm.
Really?
Until the, I would say all the way, yeah, all the way through.
Oh, I would say almost to the 2011 redesign.
Like if you could almost love, whoa, no, no, it's all the four, it's still the four
six, the carrier, no, no, the new edge.
Well, from an engine standpoint, maybe, but like, that's like, that's like, like
vibe as like zeitgeist as like era, the new edge versus like that
retro design that came out in 0405, very different.
They are different, but like the powertrains are pretty similar.
Yeah.
Cause they had the four six.
Well, didn't the original like, don't get me wrong, but the new, the SN95 started
with a five, they had the five leaders.
94, 95 still had the five up.
Went to the four six, which got a bump in power, which is always fun.
And then that four six soldiered on your right without much improvement through.
Yeah.
Through to like a 200 horsepower bump.
But no, that big, big style difference, though, between the style.
Yeah.
But like just like a 65 has styled very differently than like a 72 Mustang grand.
But like it still had those were still very much like muscle pony car kind of
vibes, which was the thing to was not.
Well, yeah, it was a pinto, right?
Yeah.
And then the Fox body was a very still a muscle car pony car, but a very different
vibe and kind of customer base even.
And then the SN95 and then I think the coyote kind of changed stuff a lot where
it was just so much more performant than the early cars, like the performance
envelope, which is like way higher to where it was just like they were exporting
them to Europe and they were like, they're more of a world car.
They're more of just like an actual performance car than just like
straight line, go fast.
What's wild is the coyote still had a live axle when it came up, those
Mustangs, remember, and then it switched like a few years later to independent.
That's kind of neat to all happen in that generation.
What's the cheapest generation of Mustang?
Is it is it still SN95?
Like if you want to go out and buy a Mustang, it's got to be right.
Because I think even like a Mustang too, there's so there's so much harder
to find at this point.
Oh, absolutely.
Because they got like even like even when they had like a pinch of value,
they had a value as a parts car because people would pull the pull the sub
frames out and do like the steering conversion on earlier cars because you can
do that like, oh, yeah, you've got the the Mustang to subframe.
So I think even probably it's got to be SN95.
I bet five grand or less we could grab runner driver manual V8 SN95 cars.
Yeah, it's a lot of car, but it's a little sloppy.
Oh, dude, I hate what I hate about the 95.
Dude, is the fucking the wheels are on board it like inboard like four inches.
Especially like the low the lower trim stuff.
All right.
So yeah, like a V6 with like 195 tires.
Yeah, those like those like tri spoke wheels.
Oh, that's that's hard.
That's hard to look at.
But you could get a V8.
You get a early five five oh manual.
I mean, you can get you can get an SN95 Cobra for not a whole lot more than that.
Yeah, like seven or eight.
Yeah, for a runner driver and like have a big difference.
Yeah.
Sure, they lied about the 300 horsepower, but for three or five was it?
I think they claimed three or five who was not not there.
But that'd be fun.
Like that'd be it's not a horrible idea, dude.
That's it. Yeah, Cobra Cobra off.
It's got to be got to be.
Should we pony car war it?
And we picked the cheapest iteration of each pony car Camaro versus Mustang.
That could be kind of fun.
I'm still I'm still I'm still I still want the iron to do.
I knew you didn't say iron dookie.
So I do three auto.
I am I had a a friend who she in high school, she had a I believe it was a 90.
Mustang convertible.
Four cylinder auto.
Oh, and it was.
Yeah, it broke a lot for one thing, which was fun.
Cool. And it was also just terrible to drive.
But it was like, I don't know, that's kind of a dope, like high school car.
Like, yeah, I think for like, yeah, it's like, it's very much like high school
girl car, you know, for, for, you know, to, to, you know, put my sexism hat on.
But like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
It kind of fit the bill.
It fit the vibe of terrible to drive.
I drove it once.
I was like, why do you own this miserable car?
No redeeming features kind of neat, though.
I mean, it's no 90 Chevy course.
So I guess I can't cast any stones, but how about a, how about a Mustang?
Not a Mustang, like in the Capri RS, the which one?
The four, the Mercury Capri RS.
I speak into Fox bodies.
I love it.
I heard if you break that hatch glass, you're shit out of luck
because they stopped making those like immediately.
Oh, yeah.
And you can't find it.
I, I got a soft spot for those.
I think those look cool.
They always had really cool decals on the RS models.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like they're always like a picture of dark gray with like the yellow
and orange stripe or the red and orange always something.
But that bubble glass was so cool in the rear.
I'd like to get one of those back to Fox by so that I guess it would be a toss
up between SVO and a RS, like a really nice Capri RS.
What's the last time you saw one of those on the road because.
Oh, in the wild?
No, it's been it's like out of Radwood.
Sure.
But like outside of that, I can't I can't remember last time I've seen one.
Yeah, it's on the it's on that list.
I do like the idea of getting cheap V8 pony cars, though.
That's kind of it's funny.
I feel like it's tempting.
It's and you can certainly get a.
Like a cheap SN 95.
Far easier than you can get a cheap V8 manual, like F body.
Camaro.
Yeah, I agree.
I agree.
Yeah.
Most of those like cheap F bodies are auto almost like 90.
Yeah, if you find a manual that'll be beaten up and people want too much money
for it or it's a swap that's done in the backyard.
I had a buddy who picked up, I believe it was a 95.
So LT one six speed Camaro.
And it moved.
It was no joke.
It was like they didn't buy about that horse power.
This is for being the one that like, oh, it's just the LT one.
You don't want that one.
I think it was a good it did all right.
It had to early early Fox body.
Five O's were under five or under 200 horsepower.
So, you know, that's what you're up against.
Yeah.
And then what early SN 95 was what two was it two 20?
I think I want to five oh yeah, because it's the hold over from the Fox body.
It's right there.
Yeah, two 20.
Yeah, a bunch more torque, but more of the torques.
Yeah, I don't know.
We'll have to be fine.
They could be a lot of fun, actually.
I'm curious.
Here's the thing, though.
That's our track day special right there.
We're dead.
We're dead.
No, Nanny's.
We die like that.
Yeah.
And just whatever absolute dog food quality tires are on the car.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Send send the Ling Longs.
So a question, though.
Hmm, I don't I can look it up.
Do we think is this the end of is this the Mustang we have now the current Mustang.
Is this the end of the line?
Is this the last Mustang we're ever going to get?
Surprise the Mustang still with us to be to be your Frank,
but I'm also going to be frank in that statement.
I'm surprised it's still here.
Truthfully, they sold 45,000 Mustangs in in in 2025.
Oh, because that's that's the new design, right?
Correct.
Yes, before that, that number is significantly lower.
Twenty twenty four.
Yeah, what do we sell in twenty four?
Forty four thousand.
OK, so a fifty one thousand mock ease.
Oh, how much does that hurt like the true Mustang fans out there?
But I don't know. Yeah, forty forty eight to fifty thousand in twenty twenty three.
So like, you know, mid forties is is pretty pretty typical,
which I don't I don't know sports cars are pretty good.
That's pretty good for sports car, though. Right.
But I'm curious, I'm curious how many of those are like convertible
EcoBoost rentals that are available in.
Yeah, let's see the the fleet breakdown, right?
Right. That's a good call out.
Yeah, twenty. Is it the last one? Airport.
I I don't know.
They I mean, the redesign.
I don't know if I'm in the camp of the new redesign being that much better.
It's kind of it's fine.
It's it's OK.
The GTD is fucking cool as all hell.
That's that's a totally different animal.
It's kind of a Mustang.
I mean, it is, but it's not.
It is, but it's not right.
Yeah, but it's like an EVO is not a Lancer, right?
Let's be at the end of the day, right?
Like, yeah, well, I got a Lancer GTS.
You know, I looked at the spec sheet and it just it made more sense.
You know, OK, that's why.
But no, I think, I don't know, could they do something wild with it?
I don't know.
Maybe like a hybrid performance Mustang in the future.
Could be a thing could be a thing.
Like, yeah, how would they?
How would they?
Because Ford is very much
they're kind of hurting right now because of they they they went pretty hard
on EVs and they didn't get the payoff for it.
Yeah, but they say they lost like six billion on
last year numbers of EV this and that and tariffs numbers.
We can't comprehend. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, they're elevated.
I don't know what they are, but they're
they're numbers and they so like would they would they do that?
Or they just lean into, you know, the current administration dialing stuff back
and just say, hey, we're going to do what Stalantis does,
which is stay afloat purely by putting V8s and things.
And so, yeah, maybe it'll it's it's an interesting thought, right?
But I think hybrid technology is not being shied away from.
So I think embracing that might be the fix.
The thing is the it's like the Maki, right?
Like if they name that whatever, if they came up with a name that has no cachet,
right, like it's not a it's not a Mustang Maki.
They didn't have the Mustang symbol.
I don't think it would have been as popular.
I know we like look at it and say that thing's not a Mustang,
but it's that brand recognition.
It's a Ford. It's, you know, they put the tail lights in there.
Frank, it's it's technically it's technically a Mustang.
I think that was successful for them because of that.
And for that reason, they might want to hold on to Mustang,
even if they make it like an all wheel drive hybrid, you know?
Yeah, I don't I don't know that they're going to nuke the nameplate.
Mm hmm.
Like completely.
Now, they might solely it.
They might, you know, they might turn it into
they might eliminate the Mustang as we know it and have the Maki soldier on maybe.
But like I'd like to see them
like how would you make a new Mustang as a sports group?
Would that be what you would hybrid hybrid hybridize?
Let me tell you the second coming of the Ford probe.
Oh boy. Remember that? Remember that?
Remember that day? Yeah.
No, I think I think you I think you could hybridize a Mustang
and keep it performance minded.
I think you could absolutely do that.
How what would your bucket?
So what would your marketing trick that would you call like
would you have like the V8 V8 one?
And then you'd have like the V8 with the, you know, with the hybridization?
Like I'd grab some obscure like a sub model from the past
and kind of that kind of sounds hybrid-y and kind of work that in
and tweak it a little bit.
I think that's the that's the play on that one.
The King Cobra.
The the SV, I don't know.
The SV go or whatever.
The Mustang two.
Mustang three point.
No, I don't know.
But I think I think that's probably how they keep it going, man.
I think they're going to have to, you know,
eventually are you asking if it's going to get rid of an ice
rear-wheel drive platform?
Probably sometimes they're going to have to lean on that
because the coyote can only be stretched too far.
Once they I think we've already kind of like explored the upper reaches
of that that power plant.
So that and honestly, I mean, Mr.
Hands has shown us a lot about stretching in animals.
But that's like about a shut up.
What was that?
So what Mustang came out that generate?
What was that?
Unfortunately, I don't know exactly the year that a
why did it serve it by that horse, but I got murdered.
The Pukut, I guess.
That's like 2008.
Was it horse?
Seppuku, am I right?
Or am I off?
Or am I live to that party?
I don't know.
Are you are you right?
Are you off?
Are you getting off?
Like the horse did.
He remarked about it.
But like horse Mustang.
See, I know it's good.
It's we're on topic, dude.
It's good.
The stretching the coyote.
Oh, that's what I was going to go with.
So kind of the good news, the good news for Ford is that their
chief competitor has kind of already paved the way for a V8
performance car with a hybrid component in the e-ray.
And now the ZR1X, which this is a very different thing we're talking about.
Yeah.
But, and I don't think they're selling that many e-rays.
I don't think so.
I don't think they're really.
I have not seen any in the wild.
I don't know.
It's kind of hard to tell, honestly.
But like I don't know that I've seen any in the wild.
But if you know, like it's been proven that at least is functionally
OK with a mid-engine Corvette.
Like whether you can do a front-engine rear-drive Mustang, I don't know.
But I'd like to be able to see, yeah, maybe they just call it.
Maybe it just, maybe that's what the EcoBoost quote unquote becomes.
It's like you have the V8 with EcoBoost.
And the EcoBoost is, you know, just a 200 shot of EV power.
That's fair.
Could be interesting.
Or are they going to do like the six-pack kind of thing like Dodge is
doing and do a twin turbo V6 or something to that effect?
And I don't think that's really, really bring back the SVO, right?
Yeah, I just, I don't.
The whole concept of like there's an EV like the same car has an all EV powertrain
and or an all, you know, gas powertrain feels desperate.
Yeah, it's weird.
And that's not how I wouldn't clean sheet anything that way.
And Stellantis is going to Stellantis.
But and I guess Porsche is going to Porsche, right?
Because Porsche's got, they're going to try and do this with the McCall and slash Cayman.
Yep, maybe.
Interesting.
That's going to be a mess.
But yeah, it's one messy horse.
Where are we at the end of this?
Mustangs are, are we, are we new them?
I'm pro.
I am too, man.
I am, I am super pro.
We need to get you in a GT, like a Coyote GT.
So you can just be like, what the fuck?
I'm like, how is, how is this much car on tap for this price point?
See if I can find, see if I can find one with like 180,000 miles and like no paint for like six grand.
Dude, that's still so much car.
Just yeah, yeah, so good.
Again, I'll wrap it.
Chrome wrap.
Let's go.
Straight to the chrome dome.
Boy, should, should we, should we play a game?
Oh, we could do that.
Let me, let me explain it while you, you pull up something and I think you had a physical.
I do.
I do have a physical, a physical, a physical gift.
Let me go, let me go fetch that.
You tell the people what the hell I'm even rambling on about in an APA pod first.
Frank will be pulling up a physical piece of medium entertainment medium first.
You can see the back of the ad, by the way, with a, don't show me the dammit.
I'm not.
I already spilled the beans last week.
So what we are about to embark on is the automotive print ad quiz game that will never have a name.
We actually find magazine articles.
They're usually online, but he found an actual physical magazine.
That's killer.
We read the ads omitting anything that gives it away today.
I'll be guessing.
So I have three guesses to figure out what ad Frank is reading.
He's, he's a mystical one.
He, he picks some pretty weird stuff and will often stump me, but I get three guesses, 10 minutes.
Got to figure out what the hell he's talking about.
Every time I fail, I can ask for help.
It's kind of a lifeline.
He's not a good friend in this game.
He's basically by enemy, but we'll get through it.
Frank, roll that beautiful bean footage.
I'm ready for it.
Oh boy.
Okay.
Let's hear this bullshit.
So quick spoiler.
We might, we may have done this one before.
Okay.
And I'm saying that simply because I have a physical magazine that I stumbled upon.
I got it from a friend of the pod, my homie Ingo at Ganao auto works.
And he didn't provide it.
I just took it.
It was at his place.
I was like, I'm going to borrow this magazine because it's sick.
Thievery is always a pro move.
Love it.
It is.
And I'll return it and maybe with, I don't know, maybe I'll hide a dollar bill in it somewhere.
So it's like, it's like a payola.
But it's got an ad on the back page because that's where you put the best ads.
Yeah.
And, and like, like this Marlboro ad here, he's got a horse.
He's wearing like a rain slicker and he's adjusting his gloves.
And he's got, look how, look how absolutely Chad Jod, not you Chad,
but general internet Chad Thundercock Chad.
Yeah, dude.
It's like wet.
I can tell that print ad is wet from testosterone dripping through them.
It's soaking through the pages.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
It's so good, dude.
It's humming with testosterone.
It is not suffering from low T and the ad here is not for testosterone.
It is for a vehicle.
It's a one page ad because it's on the back and there's two images of the vehicle.
One is like low right at the grill.
And like it's like rushing at you with the, with the, the running lights on the driver.
Like, yeah.
And then one is at the below that at the very bottom.
It's a profile shot.
Looking in from the, from the passenger side.
Okay.
And there's a, there's a gentleman, equally masculine looking.
It's the only way the gentleman air kind of swept back.
And he just sitting staring straight out the windshield.
He's not looking at you.
He's like looking out the windshield.
Whoa.
How can something so well behaved be so nasty?
It's a wonderful thing to have amenities in a sports car.
They make driving so civilized.
And yes, the blank has more than its share of luxury car amenities.
But you know what?
Forget them.
Because in the end, this car isn't about being civilized.
It's about 232 turbocharged horsepower.
It's about zero 60 and 6.7 seconds.
There's an asterisk.
Yeah, that there is.
It's about fully independent double wishbone race derived suspension.
A new driver side airbag supplemental restraint system.
And optional anti lock brakes.
So go ahead.
Enjoy the blanks automatically climate controlled,
lumbar supported luxury, if you must.
But remember, what a blank is really all about.
Then there's a phone number, go buckle up, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup.
Yeah.
Yes, yeah.
Yeah.
Luxury car amenities.
232.
What does it say exactly?
Turbocharged horsepower.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So you're going to do airbag for the driver, though.
Fuck the passengers.
That guy.
Fuck a fuck a passenger, dude.
Yeah.
You ever consider murdering your spouse by this car on an hourly basis?
Let's start off with the obvious.
80s add amazing zero to 60 time.
Horsepower number.
V8 from the 80s would have that kind of power, but we're talking turbo.
Yeah.
So turbocharged V8.
No, I don't think we were there.
Turbo V8s this time period that were like regular cars.
I will see.
Well, regular cars.
All right.
Got me there.
Qualifier.
Geez.
I think this one, I think I got a slim dunk on this one, but I want to talk it through a little
bit because that's what we do on this little here pod.
Fucking great numbers.
Turbocharged with that kind of power.
Now, lots of turbocharging experiments in the 80s.
Not that kind of number.
Like you can go to all the Dodge stuff.
This is not a 2-2 powered turbo Dodge.
This is not.
Nothing Japanese was putting out.
Well, nothing mainstay cheap economy Japanese because there were a lot of turbocharged economy
cars at this time.
This is clearly not that based on the ad, just the way it speaks.
Think of the amenities.
The amenities.
The amenities.
This was not a cheap car in period.
I don't know.
You tell me.
It wasn't.
This is going to be a Mach 3 Toyota Supra turbo.
What year?
Is this the first year?
Is this an 88?
Final answer, my friend?
This is a Mach 3 Toyota Supra.
It is the first year of the driver airbag.
Driver airbag?
Although sort of.
They kind of fib a little bit in this ad.
It's a funny ad because it's a 1989 Toyota Supra,
which is the first year of the facelift, which got you a slightly different bumpers
and some other things.
And then 90, you had different wheels, but you still have the saw blade wheels on this.
It's a crossover year.
It's weird.
But you didn't get, I don't think you got the airbag until 90.
But here is the ad.
Oh, dude, what a good looking ad.
Check out how masculine this dude is.
Dude, he's fucking, he has no pants on in that.
Oh, yeah.
No, he's just absolutely ruining himself right there.
How did they catch that part of the amenities?
How did they catch that top photo?
We're talking 80s with someone hanging out of like a pickup truck,
like a Toyota pickup truck.
I mean, probably to capture that like that kind of.
I mean, they could have, you could like.
You could layer in photo.
But no, they probably did it practically.
They probably did it.
Just a big strobe.
And yeah, just like hanging out the bed of a truck or hey,
stay shotguns were popular back then.
Sure.
Can I show you the magazine?
Yeah, hope you see.
This is the Rodentrack January 1990 Ferrari special driving the 348,
comparing the, you know, the GTO and Daytona.
And 50 year on the 40.
Yeah, 40.
40, sorry.
And then yeah, also check the bottom.
Pre-viewing the new Lotus Elan, the M100 Elan.
Nothing about it.
How much should they tear up the front wheel drive part of it?
Yeah, that's what they do.
I don't know.
I didn't read the review.
Oh, here it is.
So we're.
Oh my God.
What a, we lived in the best time and we didn't even know it.
I know, I know.
We had it so good.
We had it so good.
You don't know what you've got till it's gone.
And by that, I mean, front wheel drive, the Zuzu powered Lotus.
Handling by Lotus.
Can we just say that the Mark III Supra is finally getting a fraction,
I think, of the respect it should have gotten.
Like these things, God, you could get a Mark III for $6,000 to $8,000 for damn near,
I don't know, 10 years after they came out.
And now you're 15 for a clean one.
They're cool.
I've never owned one and I've owned a million.
I've owned a couple of Mark I's, a million Mark II's.
I've never had an opportunity to own a Mark III.
And I've never even driven a Mark III.
I'd love to.
You know, they were known for head gasket failures and being heavy.
But now like a fully decked out one of those, it's like 36, 3700 pounds.
That was heavy then.
And I bet it still drives heavy.
Toyota and head gasket started that period.
It was just, it was just the thing, right?
So I drove and rode in a modified, like huge fucking turbo Mark III automatic.
Which is like, apparently the automatics were insanely robust.
Yeah.
And this is for some reason.
You're the ace in, yeah.
Big, big tough unit.
So you could put nasty power through them.
And it was the most like insanely loud, just like turbo spoo up event.
Like the turbo he was running with an, like it had an X, had an external waste gate that
just fucking screamed like metal ripping apart at like 4500 RPM,
which is how long you waited for the turbo to even make a boost.
And I just remember it was like a highway pole car.
Remember when that was a thing in like the, what time am I talking?
Like 2009 time period, 2008 time.
People were building, yeah, people were building like highway pole cars.
In like 1320 video, like all that kind of stuff.
So it was like, it was in that, that kind of, just so you know,
I'm painting the full picture for you to understand my experience.
That thing was absolutely hilarious.
And like the rear would break loose.
It was just big heavy car, but for highway poles didn't matter
because you're already at speed.
You had no mass to overcome inertia and whatnot.
But what a fun car.
I'd like a lightly mod, like a lightly modded one.
Yeah.
To take on a rally and it would probably kind of fall apart on a rally
because it's kind of big and heavy, but like, I don't think it would.
I don't, because the 300 ZX twin turbo is big and heavy,
often critiqued for being a little too heavy.
They're, I think they're a little lighter.
It's close.
It's closer.
They're definitely shorter.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But that 300 ZX was way better than I thought in the twisties.
So third mark threes, man, give them the respect they deserve.
Yeah.
All right.
Yeah, that's right.
Put some respect on it.
Well, good job, sir.
Thank you, man.
Yeah, good ad.
Good ad.
Yeah, it was fun and it was fun to have like a physical.
There's a couple other of ads in there.
I was contemplating, but that one was just so masculine and red.
Yeah.
But those numbers, that's what like instantly like you go,
you like that first off the number, the horsepower number is crazy.
And then turbocharged 80s, you start to think.
Yeah.
If you, if you know, because earlier like 87, 88 were 230 horsepower.
And then when you got the 89, you had the facelift
and still have the saw blade wheels.
And you had the gray trim instead of the painted trim
and a not airbag steering wheel, but you got 232 horsepower.
Exactly.
I think you got like a 10 torque bump or something like that.
Cool.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Cool car.
Yeah.
You working on anything lately, sir?
I have been, it's sparse and very far in between, but still working on the
GeoTracker issue.
I told you I took the timing belt apart last time.
Well, didn't take it apart.
Took the front of the engine off so I can see the time belt.
My marks perfectly.
I sent you the photos, photo evidence, my friend.
So everything's good there, which leaves me in a situation where I have to put the front
of the engine back on, put the radiator back in.
That's always fun.
Did that, I get it all back together and, you know, turn the key.
And it's still a check engine light, right?
So I'm like, okay, let's, let's really see what's going on.
So I wanted to pull that code because sometimes there is just a, I don't know why.
I don't know why.
And that's like the, you jump, you jump, little pin, pin jumper.
So my nine year old son, Teddy knows how to do that now because I showed him how to,
the two diagnostic port, he needs to jump with a paperclip and then go ahead and turn
the key on.
And it did a code 12.
Now on these sidekicks.
Get fucked, is that all it says?
It's like you fucking run.
It just means run.
It actually says run.
There's a little look behind you and this light bulb that says run.
But it's a, no, it's actually their code for no faults.
And I'm like, that is the most useless fucking thing.
Wait, it gets weirder.
If you, you guys want to hear some deep geotrackers Suzuki sidekick trivia, stay tuned.
So it, code 12 is no codes.
And I'm like, oh, that's cool.
But if you turn the battery off and restart it or just, you know, let it reset,
it'll come back, that check engine light, which is a real pain in the dick, but no code.
So I look it up.
I'm like, what the fuck is going on?
I start reading the forums, which you should always do for geotrackers.
Get in there and start reading those old posts from like 2004.
There, dude, under, as you can pull this panel under the steering column,
ask me how I know so much from swapping 20 gauge clusters out.
There is, if you go to the left a little bit, reach in there.
There is an honest to God from the factory toggle switch for check engine lights.
I can't make this up, right?
Is it, is it like, is it like a, okay, hear me out.
Is, is that like a, you hit the switch to, to test the diagnostic system?
Like you flip the switch to make sure that like the module that like
blinks and the actual check engine light work and you go, okay, well that works.
No, it's, flip it off.
Like it's a, just a reset check engine light because people are like, oh,
I have this misfire and I just do this and I sell the car.
And I'm like, that's fucked because then it'll still have to go through
so many drive cycles before.
No, it actually resets the check engine light.
But the thing is, like if it is, if there is a fault, it instantly comes back.
That switch does nothing.
So it's only for that code 12, which is like, it's not only tied to some kind of
bullshit, but it's, people do use that.
So that's another thing.
If you're buying trackers and sidekicks, drive it for a little bit and then
make sure the smog was done legitimately because they can flip that switch
and cut the check engine light.
And I think if you shut it off, the check engine light won't illuminate.
Not even start up.
So you flip the switch and then shut it down.
Why?
Why is this a thing?
But anyway, so I'm like, holy shit, there's a real toggle switch and it looks after
market.
I'm not joking, but it was from the factory.
It's like a chrome dip switch.
It's so stupid.
Yeah, dude.
It's like what you'd have for your fucking science fair project that you did.
Like, here's how electricity gets through your neighborhood.
Yeah.
You flip it in a paper mache volcano, just erupts in the back seat.
Like, God damn it.
What the hell?
80s baking shirt.
Why is that there?
But no, dude.
So that I did that, turned the car back on check engine like, sure, shit is gone.
So there's no codes.
Does it run?
It's still fucking vibrating at idle.
Like mad, mad vibration.
So tune in next time.
I'm going to actually do the timing light and check my ignition timing just to make
sure something isn't crazy.
But I don't think so.
And it's only at idle.
Like if you tip and throttle it.
Nothing.
Metal is out when you drive it.
No lack of power.
None of the other.
Like if your ignition timing is way off, you know how sometimes it like, or like the
timing belt, like that's kind of what made me think it wasn't the timing belt being
off because it'll always run like dog shit if you're off by a tooth.
And you'll have a, although it is 84 horsepower, it's easy to pick up when
you're missing a few ponies.
Dude, yeah, that's what I've been playing with.
Next is ignition timing checking.
And after that, it's got to be, it's got to be the other motor mount that I didn't do.
It's like so completely shitty that I'm getting an insane amount.
Now that you've got all the other mounts, it's just like.
Somehow localized to.
I don't know, man.
This is the fun shit I chase after.
You know, it went from cleaning out the entire EGR system.
Oh, I have to do this.
Exposing the timing belt again.
And now this, but that toggle switch is a fun little fact.
I want a little sidekick tracker trivia.
Dude, how funny is that shit?
Dude, it looks so, dude, it looks like an aftermarket like Pep Boys kill switch.
Fuck it.
I love these cars.
How about you, man, turning any wrenches?
General maintenance.
So I love that shit.
Yeah.
Just on the wife's daily, the first generation high high Highlander hybrid.
And it's funny.
It's the car's totally a totally adequate machine.
We've never had any problems with it.
I've bought it in 2022.
Okay.
2022, 2023, somewhere in there, through a friend of the pod car donation services.
And they had 91,000 miles long then.
We now have 133 on it.
Her commute is tiny.
It's under a mile each way.
But you know, that's the car.
Oh, we're going to drive to Disneyland.
We take that car, whatever.
Makes sense.
Yeah.
We're going to go to the snow.
We go up there.
It's like the loaded up, you know, limited four wheel drive, all the things, right?
It's right, right.
And so, and it's been, it's been flawless.
But it's kind of, it's like kind of uninspiring.
It's like silver with a gray leather interior.
Okay.
You know, and it's like the daily, so it's got like daily driver problems,
which is mostly that it's like perpetually dirty and like needs to get cleaned out.
And like, it's just uninspiring, right?
So it's like, maybe we'll please it one day, whatever.
And then any, any time I do any kind of work or maintenance on it,
I pop the hood and I look around.
I'm looking for like, okay, you know, I do the standard, the standard stuff.
I'm going to change the oil, but while I'm here, let me look at like,
how are my battery terminals?
How are all my fluids?
Does anything look like it's starting to leak or seek a little bit?
How are, let me check the air filter.
And everything is always perfect.
Freaking Toyota's, man.
It's like this car has never leaked a drop of anything in its life.
There's not even like a beginning of like dirty buildup around
like where the valve covered gas gets might be nothing.
Everything is perfect.
All the fluids look perfect.
Even on this, and we just go, I learned on this and on my,
I don't know if your CT 200H is like this, but mine is.
Like a lot of times I'm kind of wary about waiting to do my oil changes at the
service indicator reminder.
Because I feel like a lot of times they'll stretch out a little longer
than I would normally want to do an oil change.
Do you mean on time or mileage?
On whatever the thing that comes up on the dash and says,
you're due for maintenance soon.
Because in theory on these cars, it will take into account
the last time you reset that light, the mileage of where you reset that light.
In addition to your driving habits.
Yeah, my CT set for 5,000, which is when I do my oil changes.
So my CT, like the Highlander, it's just set to whatever it feels like.
Whether it's 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, 42, 86, 6,172, it's not like a hard line.
It's based upon, you bought the Skynet edition.
It's self-aware.
It is.
And so just wait for the maintenance reminder.
Okay, great.
And a lot, but a lot of times on those ones where it's like variable
and it's the Skynet edition, Cyberdyne technology is involved.
I'm always a little wary of it.
And I, because I feel like it stretches it out longer.
But each time I go, especially on this Highlander, on my Lexus 2,
but definitely on the Highlander, to go the reminders up and I look,
because I reset one of the two trips, trip A or trip B.
I usually reset trip B every time I change the oil.
So I can kind of know exactly when it's kicking on.
And this one, it was like, whatever, 40, like 4,300 miles or something.
Okay, that feels about right.
I look at it, it's dead on full and it's like golden honey.
I was like, this looks great.
Like, I don't have to break my neck to change this today,
but I'm just going to, I'm going to do it.
I'm here.
Sure.
Whatever.
Right.
What a, what a good appliance this thing has been.
You know, I just, there, I have no excuse.
It's like, I walk away from it, like changing the oil on it
and putting it up and I put everything away.
And I'm just like, or not replacing that thing anytime soon.
Uh-uh.
Exactly.
Like good thinking about it.
Just like, well, you know, if this and like the new R2 comes out
to be kind of cool, like for what my wife does with the car,
like an EV would be a very nice thing and having some new amenities
and this and that.
And then I'm like, oh dude, this car has like 400,000 more miles in it
of, of just dutiful service.
Like, right.
So it's going to be due for tire soon.
So I'm going to, I'm going to order tires.
I think I want to do cross climates, Michelin cross climates.
Okay.
Just for, you know, for the summer that we're going to, I guess.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Get ready for it.
But yeah, just, um, yeah.
So I've got like nothing like some boring maintenance on the boring daily
to like make you feel good about your automotive daily driver decisions.
So nice.
That's all I've done so far is some maintenance, but you know,
I got more stuff to work on here soon.
Nice.
Well, let's shut this thing up.
We're up against it.
Guys, thanks again for joining us.
APA pod, another pointless automotive podcast.

Check us out.
Yeah.
If you're seeing it, you're seeing it.
We appreciate that.
My own personal endeavors, auto obscure garage,
check it out, rescues, reviews, restorations.
I do have the tracker EGR video coming up next.
So if you really want to see how to pull apart an eight valve geotracker motor,
tune in guys.
It's going to be a, it's going to be a wild one.
How about you, Frank?
Where can the folks follow you for your world class photography?
So if you want to see me taking pictures of things,
cars specifically, not, I've retired my nudes business
ever since it was sent to me.
So that's the photographer's garage.
So mostly Instagram, a little bit on YouTube,
and on various car selling platforms near you.
But you should actually just continue to see me here.
As Chadwick said, either on the YouTubes,
on your preferred listening device,
or on our Patreon.
So if you, if you like what we do here,
and you want to support more of this,
both more in one day, we might actually break even on this endeavor.
If we get enough into Patreon subscribers.
Also, it'll support us by giving us beer to drink on our late night
confidential episodes, which is the monthly bonus episode
that you get for Patreon members only.
So if you want to see even more unhinged content,
and you want to watch us drink terrible liquids,
yeah, head on over.
That's just Patreon.com slash APAPod.
Again, that's Patreon.com slash APAPod.
Otherwise, thanks for tuning in
and being part of this dog and pony show,
or dog and dog or Mr. Hands show, whatever we're doing here.
And tune in next time.
Yeah, thanks a lot guys.
Take care as always, and we'll catch you in a week or so.
This is the sound of one hand clapping.
It does make a noise.
Science.
