This week on that car show, Ryan takes a break from designing seven more Cracker Barrel logos
to share some experiences from last weekend.
Lindsay admits that she's been licking the outside of windows when it comes to the Ford GTD.
I learned that San Bernardino is not an exotic location that should be cherished,
but a place that you should get out of as quick as you can.
We talked a little bit about the shows that we've been to recently and what it takes to put on a show.
Lindsay attended a show in the Pacific Northwest that's been going for five years
and was started by a young man called Tom who was 15 when he started the show.
We have a little bit of fun when we pair up each other to famous cars and famous car owners.
Then we talked a little bit about cars that had Corvette engines
and there are more than the five that were listed on the website.
Then finally, we talked about what plans are coming up.
In particular, Ryan has his annual adventure in all sorts of exotic cars in Colorado
as part of the Colorado Grand.
All that and a hell of a lot more on this week's that car show.
Bullshit, Long Island Ice Tea.

My whole life, 50 years of drinking, that's not true, but I've never once enjoyed a Long Island Ice Tea.

The gang is all back together again for another week. How are we doing?
That's right. Good. How are you guys?
It's great to see you both.
Emotionally scarred.
Wait, do tell.
So I decided to go to a concert last weekend in another part of California that I've never discovered before.
And it sounded glamorous because it was this place called San Bernardino.
What I didn't realize is San Bernardino is one of the sketchiest places in California.
Is that right?
That's accurate.
I just want to say I'm sorry now to all the San Bernardinians.
All our listeners from San Bernardino.
I'm here with Empire.
They can share their tales.
I realized my mistake afterwards, but I booked another Wyndham hotel.
So if you remember when I went to the Daytona 200, it was a Wyndham hotel.
And this one was a Wyndham hotel as well.
I drove into the car park. It was a two-story motel.
Obviously I had the new Boxster.
There were half-naked people in the car park drinking alcohol.
There was one car that only had three inflated tyres.
And the windows of some of these rooms were kind of cracked.
So I sat in the car park for 10 minutes trying to find another hotel.
It was the second time in my life where I didn't check into that hotel.
I decided that Redlands was a much better place.
What's the saying? You can't go home, but you're definitely not going to stay here.
I'm also picturing Dan, this British gentleman in a brand-new guards red.
Porsche Boxster GTS 4.0.
I'm sure all eyes were on him.
No, they didn't notice. They were that drunk.
They didn't notice me in the car park.
Oh boy.
I've traveled with Dan.
Dan's bar isn't real high, so this place must have been pretty.
That's how you know it had to be really bad.
Well, and I will say in defense of Wyndham, I've had reasonable experiences there.
So it may not be across the board.
But yeah, when you pull in and there's half-naked people outside,
that's how you know it's a party.
Sounds like a bad naked.
None of them were wearing brief pants for the record.
If only they were, that would have been the coolest motel ever.
I would have checked in.
I'm going to say you might have actually stayed there.
I got a birthday card from my parents.
It's got underpants on. This has become a thing.
I've had people check in with me ever since that episode,
checking in on me and my undies.
I've still not heard from Roof, but I would love to hear from Roof.
I'm sure they're working on a prototype.
I heard next year you had a hat. It's underpants.
They're yellow.
This is now going to be a through line in your life
for the duration, Ryan.
I'm afraid it might be.
This is going to be what it is.
I was thinking, does it give you somewhere to tuck in your yellow bird?
So I went from San Bernardino to Redlands.
I saw the concert, which is great.
And then Tori texted me to say,
I sold a car to the lead singer eight months ago,
which was just crazy.
It is a small world and that guy gets around, right?
So what did you see? What was the lineup?
It was a band called the Ataris.
They were big in the 2000s.
They did a cover of Boys of Summer.
They're still touring.
And then I didn't stay for many songs,
and it was Alien and Farm, if you remember them.
Sure, yeah.
Sounds fun.
Yeah, they did a cover of a Michael Jackson song.
That's right.
That's right, yeah.
Smooth.
More importantly, how's that car?
Car is great and still needs to ride it in, right?
So you need to get to a thousand miles,
and I'm about 650 now.
And so a little bit more to go.
I had the top down until it was 109
and then decided it was too hot at that point.
But yeah, it's got good air conditioning for sure.
And you had the opportunity to test it.
I know, I heard it was a wild heat wave down there the last few days.
Hot, hot, hot.
But it was good. What have you guys been up to then?
I went to the Northwest Exotics.
It was the last event of the season for them up here,
which has grown into, like, if you're in the car world in Seattle.
It's a cool story because it was started by a 15-year-old
and it's really grown into a huge event.
And they do, like, they're now themed.
So this was, I think, Italian.
And there were some really cool cars.
And it was fun when we were walking up.
There was a reliable truck outside, which, you know,
especially coming off of Car Week,
that's always an indicator of, like, good stuff ahead.
You know, when reliable is there.
Yeah, I've been walking in.
There was a GT4, you know, with the carbon hood
and this amazing teal green that I've never seen before,
which was beautiful.
There was a Pujo 205 GTI.
There was an M1 that I actually got to see the owner
climb into and drive away, which is really cool.
You know, neat to see one of those
and even more fun to see it driven.
And then there was a 66-427 Cobra,
which I always, you know, it's near and dear to my heart.
There was a Pagani Utopia,
which is full carbon fiber, you know, with color over it.
I mean, that is, it was stunning.
It's really something to behold.
It's really a work of art.
And to get to see one in person
and be able to get up close to it was really special.
And it tells you really how much the event has grown
and how well regarded it is with what they're able to bring in.
There was a special edition Mustang GTD,
which is, they're calling it the Spirit of America edition.
And the livery celebrates the first time
that a Mustang won the Tour de France in 1964.
And I actually got to see that car in Le Mans in June.
So that was pretty fun to see it again.
And there was kind of an interscope style 935
with BBS fan wheels.
There was a 911 Carrera Cup car
that had been driven in the Great Britain series.
So that was unique.
And then what else?
There was a 296 GTB Ferrari
and a Viper Green GT4.
So we thought of Dan McGinnis.
And let's see our friends, McLaren.
There was a 98 M3 sedan that had been restored.
You know, and I always love this approach
because you get some really interesting examples.
But it was, they restored it with the idea of
if BMW was making an E36 M3 sedan now,
what would it look like?
Sure, yeah.
And it was beautiful.
And then there was an F1 car.
There was a 67 Ferrari.
Casual.
Yeah, no big deal.
And then there was a McLaren Senna,
which I have never seen one of those in person.
They have see-through doors.
Oh, yeah.
That's the best part.
Yeah.
So what happened with this 15-year-old?
Where is he now?
Or is she?
Actually, he's a friend of mine.
I'm kidding.
Yeah, you know him.
Yeah.
So it's Tom.
He's now 20.
Right.
I saw him yesterday.
Oh, you did?
So he studies in LA,
but he's about to do a semester in London.
But yeah, I mean,
I've been speaking to him for about six months or so.
And actually doing a bit of mentoring for him.
Oh, nice.
So, but really nice.
We should get him on the show when he's back from London.
Yeah, that sounds fun.
That'd be awesome.
You know, it's gone from a pretty small event
to obviously a significant event.
Yeah.
And the community around Seattle kind of,
you know, gathers around on it.
Right.
There was also a private event the night before
at a private car collection,
which looked outstanding.
It really did.
I was having a lot of FOMO afterwards.
Fear of missing out.
This place is on Mercer Island.
So it's on the island in between the two bridges.
So it was on the water and yeah, check out.
We can share some of the pictures.
I'm sure I can find some that we can share.
But, but yeah, I mean, someone who's,
who's now 20 and has seen the event grow and, you know,
it's Kiddos to Tom and the team around him.
So yeah.
What are you doing at 15?
Not this.
And I didn't,
I didn't realize until after the event,
but they had the designer of the Ferrari Enzo there.
He was at the event the night before.
And then he was at the show also.
And Dwight Nolten from Carpe Vium actually designed the art
for the poster for this, for this event.
And this event is notoriously like the,
like the bouncer at the gate, if you will,
is tough, right?
Like you've got to have some pretty good iron to get in, right?
It's definitely curated.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The center is in the mulberry colors, I think.
Is that right?
It was white, fluorescent orange and black.
Yeah.
Okay.
Maybe I'm thinking of a different car.
I think it's the Griot's car.
Could it be?
Oh, I think you're right.
Yeah.
So, yeah, there was sort of car royalty there as well.
The, I've sat in that M1.
Really?
Yeah.
So that M1 used to belong to race at Johnny Giacotto.
And it's now owned by BMW collector Peter Gleason
up in the Pacific Northwest.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, that makes sense.
Well, and it's such a nice venue because it's not enormous,
which also like it's sort of like,
even if they hadn't set out to curate it,
the space dictates that it needs to be,
you know, carefully curated.
So it's, it's like the perfect size because they can bring
in a lot of really cool cars, but it's not so big.
You can see everything if you want and you still have time
to talk to your friends.
And it's a beautiful, you know,
it's on the water, on like Washington.
And so it's like, it's practically perfect in every way.
Nice.
Speaking of events that take a lot of coordination, et cetera.
I think, Ryan, you didn't go to an event last weekend,
but you witnessed some of that challenges around coordination.
Yeah, yeah.
Shout out to the Morgan Adams Foundation Concord here in Denver.
A lot of friends went, I ended up not going.
Long story.
You know, call it burned out from cars.
Call it whatever you want.
I didn't go for the first time in several years.
Right.
It looked fantastic.
I didn't do it.
It said just kind of relaxed around here.
What's that like?
It was needed.
It was needed.
Although strangely, the Chinese tourists are back.
Have I, have I shared this with you?
Wait, do tell.
We were, this was a couple months ago.
We were in the living room and we noticed there was
a group of very obviously Chinese tourists, right?
You know, out in front of the house,
taking pictures and taking pictures of each other
in front of our house.
And you've both been to our house.
I would say it's a pretty typical, you know, modest brick,
you know, bungalow or whatever.
I mean, it's lovely.
And we thought, okay, well, this is interesting.
I don't know.
I don't know.
They like the house.
They could have been.
But this started, this actually, this is pre-underwear.
It's just pre-underwear story.
It's not because this was the man who created the roof
underwear.
No.
Yeah.
This was known worldwide.
Well, then it happened again or like,
there must be something to this.
Well, they came back.
I've looked into this.
This is a thing.
Dan, I Googled this on BBC.com.
Your people, they report a story.
Kidlington Chinese tourists attracted by
quote-unquote quiet houses.
Do you know, first of all,
do you know where Kidlington is in the UK?
Yes, it's in Oxford.
It's quite near where I grew up.
I live there.
Okay, you're kidding.
Okay.
Yeah.
Well, apparently this is a thing.
This article says residents were baffled by
coaches of sightseers arriving in
Kidlington, Oxfordshire, imposing for
photos in front of gardens and against
parked cars.
And at least in the UK,
apparently these tourists seek out
sort of prototypical British
abodes and they like to take pictures
and it's, you know,
it was a little weird.
It was a little like being in the zoo.
I'll be honest with you.
But I would, you know,
our house is again a pretty modest
place, but I think it probably is,
probably checks off a lot of the boxes
of like what an American house should
look like, right?
And so apparently we're on some
checklist or something.
I'd love to know where else they stop.
But rain shine.
I feel like I should go and sell
lemonade or something.
I was just thinking your daughter should
set up a lemonade stall.
I know.
They're hard to predict.
You know, they just pop up and then
they're gone and they've been
respectful.
I have no real issue with that.
I just have all the houses,
you know, in Denver.

Like, you know,
it seems kind of uneventful,
but good on them.

I feel like we should check.

Like, is there some, you know,
you go on and it's like a pin or
whatever.
And so is it like Kidlington tour

I mean, as far as I know,

We've got nice landscaping.
I spent a lot of time out there.

They apparently had more airplanes
this year.

reach.

the concourse always on a set
on a Saturday evening.
They're doing an event on Sunday
at the Polo Grounds,
which I didn't even know was a

just when you think your life is
good, there's,
you find out that there's a whole
other tier.
But I guess it was a,
it was a great event.
So anyway,
next year, next year.
Thinking about those people that
you heard at Quail saying,
well,
at least we know we're worth
the same amount as everybody
else here.
I still think about that.
That was,
that was something.
Yeah.
But it got me thinking,
you know,
just even so this relatively
local event,
no, they,
they get a lot from all over and
they get a lot of people going
back East after car week.
But what,
what a logistical sort of
just achievement it is.
And it got me really thinking
about car week in the Quail
and pebble and not just those,
but the auction houses.
You know,
and I think we might be having
someone from one of the auction
houses joining us as soon who
maybe can shed some light on
that.
But just,
just again,
you talked about the reliable
carriers,
getting the cars in,
selling the tickets,
the vendors,
you know,
not imagine that sort of stuff.
That's the stuff that really
impresses me.
Right.
Like that's the stuff that I
know I can't do.
And I don't know,
maybe it's mid-site.
I think you're right.
Even,
you know,
I think if you haven't been
involved in putting an event on
like that,
you go like,
oh,
we just want to do like a
simple little car show.
And then especially when it
starts to scale up,
I mean,
I know,
you know,
my family is involved with the
Cobra Club in Orange County
and they do a car show every year
to benefit the charity that
they've chosen that year.
And they get between
75 and 85 cars.
So it's not
enormous,
especially when you compare it
to some of the car week
events.
But having seen the
back end of that,
it is a lot of work.
So I can only imagine
that's exponentially more,
you know,
obviously the bigger you get,
like,
it's a lot of effort.
I could barely organize a
wedding,
you know,
close to many years ago.
And there's no cars involved.
No,
I just,
all the moving parts,
I just,
I guess I never really had an
appreciation for that.
It really hit me this year
and it's just fascinated by it.
Yeah.
Loved to,
you know,
get a peek behind that curtain,
I guess.
And to get someone on,
don't we,
a lot of things.
And there's at least
one car manufacturer
that recognizes the high
quality of journalism
coming from Mr.
Ryan Barkey.

learned, you know, when you're looking for these specialty cars and they're pre-owned,
you can't be too picky about the colors. Bad car facts.
It doesn't matter, does it? No. I think you make peace with the color.
Nice. Nice. That's pretty wild. I thought it was interesting they had Tom Hartley handle,
he had done the Bernie Eccleston collection, and then he handled this as well, and he seems to be
the authority. Yeah. If you have a giant collection like that, he's your man. Yeah.
It's funny how that works out right. Like certain sellers sort of, they corner a market of a
certain car. Merit partners, right? 4.0 GT3 RS is, for example, right? There we go.
But it's also weird because in Kissimmee in a few weeks time, there is a 250 GTO going up at a
Meekum auction. Oh, interesting. So Meekum's really stepping up. Yeah. I mean, they obviously
had the Jerry Karl, the Jerry Seinfeld Karl last year. Yeah. Yeah. We went to the Meekum auction,
or at least I did. Either of you go to the Meekum auction? Oh. Okay. I went for the very first
time. And let me tell you, it was an event I paid to get in, paid 30 bucks to get in.
The auctions were done for the day. I tried the whole media thing and they won't have
it. So I paid 30 bucks. I have never seen such a diversity in cars at one auction. And I think
they had something like 900 cars on auction there. And there was everything from, I mean,
you know, a beaten down Monte Carlo SS, right? Michael Assasa, where are you? To a 250 GTO,
right? And it was a white one. And that must be the same one. So there must be
must be parading it around before they actually sell the thing. That makes sense.
That's a range, folks. It's a range on something else. When they say there's something for everyone,
they mean it. Yeah. It's interesting because that car, that 250 GTO, has been paraded around
for over a year. I think it was at the RetroMobile last year, Lindsay, in Europe.
It's possible. That show is so enormous it's possible. It was there and I didn't see it.
But it's a Seattle car. Interesting. Is that the one that was at Classics on the Green?
Yes. Okay. Then I've seen it. And it's one of the very few that are actually right hand drive as
well. That's that's that's that's right. Also interestingly, big placard in front of it,
cars never been restored untouched. But not the original paint, not the original engine.
Not this whole list of things that seem to, I guess, contradict the claim.
I'll have to check my notes. Unrestored, but things have been altered along the way.
That's a lot of cars. But the 250 GTO just as a thing is really something to behold,
whether it's that one or the one we happen to see in the paddock at Laguna Seca. I mean,
it is, when you see one in the flesh, yeah, the prices kind of make sense. I mean,
they're, they're just, there's something to behold there. There are, they're just
fantastic, just fantastic. They just have that right shape. They're amazing.
Well, there's some cars that just sort of stop you in your tracks and that is one of them.
That is one of them. Yeah. Yeah. But there are nicer ones than that white one at Meekum,
I'm just telling you. Yeah.
So you're going to hold out for a nicer one, Ryan, is that what we're hearing?
Yeah, that in the F1. I'm going to give everybody else a crack at this one and I'll
wait. Do the right thing. Yeah. Always do the right thing. Great movie.
Very good. I thought I would lay down a bit of a challenge for you guys this week.
Yes. And it's inspired slightly by RM again. I think we should be sponsored by RM are selling a
Ayrton Senna road car. It's a McLaren, a Mercedes 190 with the Cosworth engine.
Yeah. There's a neat car. But the interesting story behind it is that this car in particular,
so early on Ayrton Senna wasn't a known quantity, wasn't a known driver. And there was a race in
Germany where Mercedes put everyone in the same model of car, a 190 Mercedes race car. And you
had people like Nicky Lauder and other famous drivers, Alan Prost, and this young guy Ayrton
Senna turned up and he won the race. So he beat all these peers in cars that were all
in theory identical, but he wasn't a name at the time. And he bought this car and he picks it up
from the factory. So with that in mind, I thought, well, why don't we match each other to cars,
either real or fake, but you want the car and someone famous who's owned the car.
Right. Yeah. Yeah.
What's the estimate on that car, by the way? It was quite high.
I think it's like 350. Is that what it is? Okay. Okay.
As in 350,000. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, compared to the F1, that feels like a real bargain.
Yeah. Talk about provenance though. Yeah. Especially with that provenance. That's
pretty remarkable. I mean, there can't be many road cars that Senna had that, you know,
go up sale. I didn't think, yeah. So, you know, maybe that's a bargain.
But what I thought I might get you guys to do is suggest cars for each other.
What is the car and who was the famous owner? So I don't know if you guys have been thinking about
this. I have. A little bit. I didn't know it could be fake though. I thought it had to be real.
So I'm operating in reality. I hope for real ones, but I'm giving you a get out of jail card.
Or you can just go like, just kidding. Yeah. So Lindsay, what are you going to buy for Ryan?

Growing up, Our House was just a favor.
I thought that it sounded like nothing else on the radio.
It was kind of a contest between that.
And I had the tiger for me for a couple of years there.
So I think history has sort of shown that Madness is probably
the better of the two.
Also, is it the night boat to Cairo,
which we played on the steering committee
on one of our very final shows.
So that's got a special place in my heart.
But, you know, ska is always good, right?
Yeah.
And they're the best at it, right?
