Spark plugs are small parts in your car's engine that make a tiny spark to help the engine run. Over time, they get dirty or worn out, so they need to be changed to keep the car running well.
Piston rings are parts inside the engine that help keep the engine working well by sealing and controlling oil. If they wear out, the engine can have problems.
Spark plug wires are like electrical cables that help start your car's engine by sending electricity to tiny parts called spark plugs. When these wires get old, your car might run badly or have trouble starting.
The Audi SQ7 is a fancy and fast SUV that is comfortable and has lots of cool features. It doesn’t always come with a hook to pull trailers, so people sometimes have to add one later if they want to tow things. It’s a car for people who want both speed and luxury.
The Ford F-150 is a big truck that many people use for carrying heavy stuff or towing things like trailers. It's very popular because it can do a lot of different jobs and is reliable. People often add extra parts to it to make it work better for their needs.

Welcome to the Avant's Podcast. I'm Dan. I'm Nick. Happy holidays. Happy holidays, yeah.
We can say that. That's politically correct. Happy holidays or whatever. Yeah, or
Merry Christmas, like I like to say. Absolutely. Merry Christmas. Happy holidays.
God, my holiday calendar is very much thrown off because Thanksgiving is so
late this year. Yeah, it's really late. And so I'm off by that. I'm pretty much
done with all my shopping-ish. Oh, that's good. Well, I mean, I say that, and then
something else will come up or something fun, you know, but I think I'm good. So,
yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Boy, let's do a little Carter tip. Okay. So just a quick
easy one. Why do we change our spark plugs? Why do they wear out? Because the
pistons hit them. No. Okay. Okay. So the optimal firing temperature for spark
plugs is 930 degrees Fahrenheit to 1472. They have a pretty wide range. Okay. And
that's really hot. Never knew that. Okay. Yeah. So yes, a couple things can
happen. The spark plugs can overheat. And this is why overheating is so bad
for your engine. So if you are losing coolants and you're overheating,
that will obviously do it. Improper oil mixture. Because heat causes expansion,
and then things get loose, correct? Correct. Okay. Fuel mixture. I'm gonna say, I
said oil mixture. I meant fuel mixture. Improper fuel ratio, if you're running
too rich, that'll follow your spark plugs real quick. Having oil mixture in
there can do it too. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. If you've got worn
piston rings, it really comes down to one of those things is how often, why
do I change my spark plugs in an interval? One over time, they just
get coated, especially with all those older or even some current direct
injection engines is the same thing that fouls up your intake runners is the
same thing that's fouling up your spark plugs, they can build up on there.
It's the number one thing that I've changed on the Triumph, because that
one eats spark plugs because it runs so rich, older vehicles, especially
pre-catalytic converters, they just they had a, it wasn't that they
were bad, it was that they had a wider range of operation because
they didn't have the precision adjustments of fuel we have now with
those old carburetors fuel bowl dumping fuel. Exactly. Yeah. And so
that's really the main thing. It's really air fuel, air fuel mixture is
a big one. Yes, deteriorated ignition components is when people
often overlook the bad spark plug wires, bad spark plug boots,
things like that. And yes, they radium plugs are better than
copper plugs, they're a better conductor. That's it.
So yeah, and those, you know, spark plug wires wear out, even
if they don't look like they're worn out. Yeah, they can get they
get old and brittle, and then, you know, turn off all the
lights, turn on your car and look under your hood at night
without a really old car. It's kind of a fun one to do. Okay,
you can see him arcing. Oh, yeah. Oh, that makes sense. Yeah,
I just, um, yeah. So close the garage, start the car. What's
next? Don't do that.
Check your will. Yeah, check your will. Yeah, and see if
they're arcing. Yeah. Yeah. And so a radium and platinum,
that's why they're more expensive. They're more
durable. They're better conductors, they burn cleaner
That's it. But I don't think there's like, like a generic
interval for spark plugs. Like I think it's no, it depends on
the engine car specific or engine specific. Yeah. Okay. Huh.
Interesting. And then if you are if you're, if you have a car
that runs premium, and you're one of those cheap skates out
there who decides that it's okay to run and let it unleaded,
I cannot talk today. Our forts can do both. Yeah, our
forts can do both. Actually, they can they will adjust the
tune for 87 or 91.
I'm not gonna lie, I run the Raptor on 87 more than I'd
like. It's fine. I know it's fine. Yeah, probably. I mean, it's
just, I mean, we're in Washington. It's so stupid,
expensive for gas. But yeah, I've done it too. It makes no
difference. I've never seen a difference in mileage. I mean,
and I have tested it every way I've tested with 87 and a
heavy foot. I've tested with 91 and a heavy foot and the
opposite of that with, you know, like, babying it
nothing. Well, they say it reduces power, but I'm so
rarely in the power band. I just don't care. And I don't get
any difference in mileage. You know, if I had the performance
tune on like the Bronco, then you have to run 91 minimum. But
that's different. But
reasons I didn't do it and the $700 price tag. That's another
reason. Yeah. Yeah. So if signs of, yeah, signs of your
plugs going bad, poor fuel economy. That should be the
first thing you notice. Hard starting engine or no start.
If they're totally if your ignition is totally screwed,
weak acceleration in general, or your horsepower just being
down. On some vehicles, it's actually hard to notice a slight
miss on really smooth engines. But on, you know, say like a big
v8 or something, the larger the engine usually in the larger
v configuration engine, the easier it is to feel a miss. But on a
straight engine configuration, it's not as bad.
I don't think we've ever talked about misses. That might
be something we should talk about in the future. It's
like, you know, because I think that term gets thrown around a
lot. And yeah, a lot of people may not know what that means.
Yeah. So anyway, it's not always a cheap thing anymore. It
used to be like plugs were two to 10 bucks for the nice ones,
you know, and now
Oh, it's stupid. I mean, I can't even and then you get the
exotic car markup that are using the same plugs, but are
charging you.
Yeah, the good news is is you can cross reference. NGK
platinum or radium plugs are pretty much standard on
everything. Now they've kind of cornered the market for
premium spark plugs. And there's usually a cross reference.
Make sure you get the right size because there is a length
difference. Oh, yeah. If it's too long, you're going to know
real quick. Yeah, catastrophic failure. So to say the
least, but you are you are correct on the exotic car
markup on spark plugs is insane. And they're not always
easy to get to.
I forgot somebody. I mean, multiple people posted it as
far as what spark plugs in a Bugatti cost and like and
they're not exactly like they're not Bugatti spark
plugs from what I told so
yeah, but I imagine the service to do them. Oh, getting
to it. Yeah, I mean, that's yeah, but I'm saying they're
still charging a couple hundred bucks or plug or something
like that. And 16 of them. Or is it here is a dual
ignition? I don't some cars use tools, two plugs. No,
because they're they're offset because it's W16. Yeah,
it's what you know, when you look at the block, I've
actually seen one I don't know where but I've seen
one and the fact that it's I thought it was two engines
and top but it's just they're off center. Yeah. Yeah,
kind of fun. Yeah, that old Volkswagen V configured VR
configuration, the VR six carado. Remember that? So it's
like it's not a straight V. It's just like a overlapping
hard to describe. Yeah, damn Germans. I know. Yeah, yeah. Black
Friday is coming. Cyber Monday is coming. Yeah. You know, I'm
not as excited as I usually am. I've also Black Friday, I
think for a lot of companies, if you have your email has
been blowing up for the last three weeks, everybody has
been having Black Friday since red October. So it's
not as I don't feel like the deals are as good this year. I
feel like I will say this without making any statements. I
feel like there's a little bit more money in my pocket this
year, which is good. Yeah. But I also I'm sort of I'm sort of
in the same boat as you where I'm trying to kind of thin
things down and get less debt and things like that. So I'm
less eager to go out and find things. A deal really has to
be one hell of a deal to get in my. Yeah, I'm purposefully not
looking for anything. So there's a few things that have popped
up that have been really, really minor things. But that said, a
lot of people are there's a lot of good stuff to buy. It's not
a great time for consumers that are with electronic prices
have gone up quite a bit in some places, not others. But
there's still deals to be had. A lot of you made in USA
stuff like tools have been as usual, they've been, there's
not a lot of made in USA tools, let's put it that way,
but made in USA tools are pretty clear to find out
because their prices aren't so insane compared to like I was
looking at gear wrench foam inserts that's because those are
the ones I really like to have in my toolboxes. And one of the
ones I was looking at went from 260 to 360 over the last
year. That's still yeah, huge markup and I'm like, no, I
don't need that. I'll deal without my foam inserts.
The wrenches will sit in the drawer without moving just
fine. Yeah, exactly. I mean, it I am I went I have been
trying to slowly fill the new tool role that you gladly got
my birthday. And I ended up going to Harbor Freight and I got
a set of it's a mixed half inch and three eighths impact
sockets and I got them for like $32. Nice. Yeah, I mean, and it
became a stupid case, which I got rid of. But so I've been
looking for stuff like that. I did order a couple of Milwaukee
Milwaukee screwdriver sets that are going to go in. I'm kind
of building that slowly. I'm realizing I don't need it in
the truck right now. Like I have my old trusty DeWalt the black
case one, which works really well. I'm looking for a new half
inch ratchet and a quarter inch and let that I mean, I could pull
them out of the existing kit. But I'm slowly looking for that.
Harbor Freight's had some good deals. Harbor Freight's not as
cheap as it used to be. No, Home Depot's just as cheap now.
They are Husky stuff is really competitive for the same
warranty. If you don't know about Home Depot's good deals
with with the power tools with with Milwaukee DeWalt.
What's everybody? Ryobi, Ryobi, you know, where you're buying
one thing and you're getting six more things. It's it's it's
really a good deal if you go in there and you find the right
tools you need, especially if you're a car person. I know the
radios, I think the air the air, the air compressors are one
of the free tools, the blowers are free tool. I'm not sure
what DeWalt's got right now.
I'm a lot of it's just the battery deals. But let's talk
about what you should be buying. So obviously, the
Evance membership is the first thing you want to we want to
suggest ever and we do every year if you ever need tires, if you
need a service on your vehicle, it'll pay for itself instantly.
Well, actually, that made me think of something. There was a
huge announcement for Evance this week.
That's right. And I think it's a good time to bring that
up that we are now partnering with cars and bids. Doug
himself did a video. Yeah, he said our name. It's an
incredible deal about if you're looking to list a car on
cars and bids. It's a free photo shoot. You're getting a free
Lamborghini shirt. There's all kinds of really neat perks with
it. Yeah. I like cars and bids. It's been a good platform. I
think it's good competition for everything else out there. But
go look into it. Maybe maybe go look for a good Black Friday
car for your loved one. Yeah, there you go. There you go.
DeWalt's membership core 99 bucks. That's just you get
the discounts across the board. So 10% off a discount
entire 10 with an additional 10% off at Michelin BF Goodrich
five to 10% off at FCP Euro, the cars and vids deal. And then
of course, griots, Hagerty, you get the magazine subscription
and you get the of course, the carbon fiber membership card,
the local one so you can get that's the 99 plus $50 more
and you get to attend the private events for bonds
members only, you get the griots car care kit that's no
longer part of the $99 package. They say it's an $80 value.
I think it's actually more than that. Yeah. And then the
Amont starter pack, which is the key tag the license plate
frame and of course the stickers. And then of course, you
know, the magazine, all that. I always encourage people if
you're not members, go on and click the the what's the name
of it is it's not is it sponsored tab or what what's the
word partners partners tab, and then look at go down the
list and it will tell you what the discount is. We won't
tell you how to get that discount unless you're an
advanced member. But I always encourage people to do
that. That's how I kind of down I have never been
people that will sell the memberships the memberships
kind of sell themselves, but it's always when I'm
pointing it out to people. Yeah, if you ever need tires, you
need an advanced membership, like it makes no sense not to
have the membership ahead of time, you're just spending more
money for no reason. Agreed. Yeah, learn how to do math,
you'll be fine. Learn. So the next one about that, of
course, the charter membership, all the benefits of the
local and the basic plus professional photo shoot with
your car, the charter member t shirt, and then the
exclusive events that are invite only that the regular
members do not hear about all the time. And that one,
again, if you were really want to be active in the car
community, totally worth it, you will see stuff that'll
blow your mind that you did not know existed here. We are
very fortunate to see all those. Yeah. But I mean, like, if you
ever need PPF on a new car, it would be stupid not to have an
honest if you need s tech on anything, like, you know, that
if you don't think you can get paint protection, especially
s tech for under 1000 bucks on anything, ever, maybe like if
you were protecting a laptop, yeah, yeah. So one mirror, like
you said, maybe but good PPF with a good installer is
not cheap. And it's absolutely worth it. And that is part
of the price. It's a very quality product for PPF,
especially s tech. But it's the installation that you want to
do. That's why you don't want to be. Yeah, I was having this
conversation with Uncle Peter yesterday, they got a new car
and we were talking about getting it into Metropolitan for
that. So yeah, and you can upgrade or downgrade your
membership if you come in at the, you know, the charter
level one year and you want to do all that stuff. And
the next year you decide you just don't you're not as
engaged in your work, life got busy at a kid, whatever
you can downgrade to a local one for to 150. That's
no big deal. So yes, it auto renews. And yes, your
membership covers you in all regions. So even though
there's the local one, that's the one we clear about, like
you might be a Seattle local member, you're still a member
at every other region you go to and we're growing. We are
growing. So
got Nicole has taken Arizona and it's just it's skyrocketing.
Nicole's doing great. I love that.
I love Arizona. Yeah, well, yeah, that too. I mean, I
like inside Arizona. Yeah, this time of year, I love
outside Arizona. That's fair. That's fair. I mean,
that's the top of your list. Yeah, that's obviously top of
anybody's list. We already have those. We've had those for God
wondering. Oh, that's right. We're still I that it still
chaps me that we're four and six. I think four and six. Yeah,
diver Dave. You know what you did? Yeah, you know, obviously,
if there's somebody in your life that enjoys working on
their cars and enjoys working in their garage, I always
considered, you know, tools are great, you know,
ratchets. Another thing that was on my list,
obviously, I already got this year was a really good
jack. Yeah, either either upgraded one off off road jack
like Badlands. He's got the three ton. I've got the one and a
half ton. Those Daytona jacks from from Harbour Freight are
great. They're low profile. They're great. And they are
I mean, what you don't realize is everybody goes, Oh,
Harbour Freight's cheap. I mean, those Daytona jacks get
used in big car companies and things like that. Yeah, it's
all the same stuff pretty much lighter for your weight is a
big factor. I always prefer an aluminum jack for the shop.
So the lighter, the better. They're telling me to lug that
thing around to be glad you spent the money. Yeah, first time
you have to lug the heavy jack around to be glad you got the
aluminum one. Yeah, it's like 40 pounds versus 80 pounds. So
it's a huge difference to move around that jack. Let's start
with stocking stuffers. Okay, stocking stuffers are a fun
one. You can get a jack and a stocking. It's fine. Yeah, I
agree. Bigger stocking. Yeah. In fact, you can get one of
those little one and a half ton racing jacks for like 100
bucks if you get them on specials. True. Yep. And
those are great little jacks. Yeah. My first one that I
was thinking of griot's products. Yeah, our friends at
griot's like you cannot go wrong getting me or anybody and I
cleaner, interior cleaner is the big one I love because all
their stuff smells so good. Yes, you get your bonds partner
discount. Even if you don't, they have a great Black
Friday, Cyber Monday sale. That's so
And speaking of that, and you should always watch the
calendar for that. I think they're doing their free
refills on the speed shine coming up. Yes, if you're in
store, they will refill your your existing speed shine,
which is great. Yeah. So this time of year, last year, I had
a gift certificate for 200 bucks for griot's that Garib
actually got me for my birthday. And I loaded up because I
took advantage of it was 40% off, I think, plus I had
that I literally got so much stuff. And they give you they
had like buy one get one free still applied to a lot of
it. So I have tons of griot's product. But it's
that the mini bottles are awesome for the road trips,
like the little tiny ones, because even if you don't
take up any trunk space or trunk space, which depending
what you got. And I think they're running a deal on
there on the orbital polishers this year, too. It was like
buy one, you get something else free. And I think it's
another orbital. Oh, nice. So yeah, I mean, it's well, if
you're like us, that's kind of a mandatory item. Yeah, I have
used those so much this year, getting all the trail
stripes out of the range. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I would say
if you don't know what to get start with the griot's
products, any car care for any person who loves cars will
love griot stuff. I would say it's a great like if you
know somebody that gets into cars or is new to cars or buys a
new car, get them a car care kit. It goes so well to just, you
know, in the trunk. Yeah, that was my first one. You know,
something I was it was brought up here and we were
looking at it is and think I'm starting to look around for is
an air system in my garage is either an air compressor, an air
hose system, big stocking. It's yeah. Well, I mean, I've
had a ton. I mean, back in the day, I had the
craftsman's and things like that. They were horrible
because they they built up moisture and things like that.
But I've been slowly looking again and the fact that like, my
Milwaukee one is great. And I love that. And I have the more
flight or well, technically, I don't I know somebody bought it
for me for Christmas. So does that count? Thanks, mom. Very
nice of you. Yes. Well, God, I've been without one. That's
a whole long story. But I've been thinking about putting
air into the garage like and I've been nothing like wired
in or you know, but I want I would I think I'd like
something with a small little smaller tank. I looked at some
of yours like the Huskies and things like that. I really like
that.
That's a good let me add some to that. So I did an upgrade this
year. I got rid of a larger compressor and a smaller
compressor. I have this old porter cable, five gallon
pancake compressor that I've had for I don't even know 1213
years. And I've kept good care about I drain the tank on
it. So it worked great. I sold it for actually more than I
bought it for because of inflation. I bought it on
sale for $70. And now those sell for 130, which makes no
sense because you should never pay that much for one of those
that crap. I mean, if you do nothing but framing, fine, but
even then I'm going to tell you why you shouldn't buy one of
those. The new quiet compressors are life changing in
your shop. The difference now is like so I have this. It's
like the way I call it a wheelbarrow style one. It sits
under the stairs in the corner there. And I love it
because I can use it and it just flips on it doesn't
think of it this way like we knew that air compressor
kicks on there's a running joke that all the manly men lose
it immediately when the air compressor kicks on and you're
working out here alone at night because it'll scare the crap out
of you. Yeah, this thing is like it's like a low drone you
can talk over it you can keep working it doesn't even freak
out my dog. And so if you want a small compressor, they're
heavier. This is the downside is the smaller compressors are
heavier but they're so worth it get ready your old
compressor by a quiet compressor for yourself for your
loved one who works in the shop a lot if they have a
really loud one. If you don't know which one to buy which is a
totally valid argument, get them a gift certificate the home
deep because they're about the same price. What I've noticed
though if you are a Home Depot member the warranty is longer
than the Harbor Freight ones. If you are a Harbor Freight
member already then that's fine as well. But they are
basically from what I can tell holding them side by side
they're basically the exact same compressors. They're
probably made right next to the same factory with
their stickers. Yeah, they're called white label
products. That's what these are. But as long as you keep the
drain, you know, as long as you drain the moisture out of them,
man, I am a huge fan of quiet in the shop. Now I have a quiet
vacuum which is also on this list. Do you shut it off when
you're not in the shop? No, it's always on it's always on
I shut it off about once a month to drain it to drain it.
Yeah, but I mean, you have no worries about just leaving
it on leaving it compressed. Okay, no.
I know it's not good for it. Somebody else is probably
yelling at me. This is not a pro shop. This is not a
pro compressor. When this thing breaks in five years, I don't
care. I would like having the convenience of it on and yes, I
mean, I turned it off during it. It really the first time I did
it, I first time I drained it, I had virtually no moisture in
it. So and I'm not using air tools. That's a big thing here.
I'm using it for inflating and deflating tires on the the
mower. But actually, more than anything uses to blow stuff
off. Yeah, it's really its main purpose is cleaning and
inflating your hitch. Yeah, just a shocker hitch on the
truck. But that's it. If I was doing air tools, I'd have a
whole nother system and that's a whole nother conversation, a
good air filters and yeah, a good air tool compressor, you're
into, you know, 500 plus bare minimum, especially if you're
sandblasting, you're gonna need a huge tank. So that's a
different conversation. But for those of us who, I mean,
that's most people who listening to this, you're
really just using it to blow stuff off and air up your
tires. And that's totally fine. That's me. I don't use
air tools anymore. That's what cordless tools are for
law at the inside to you mentioned a good vacuum.
Yeah, so if you have an old Dyson v six that I already bought
from Costco all the time, the battery on it's probably dead.
The Dyson batteries suck. Get the Dewalt or Milwaukee adapter.
That's what I wanted. The first thing I wanted to get at
because that's still a great vacuum with just the Dewalt
batteries trash. That's the court or the stick one. They
haven't for pretty much everything they make. Okay,
you can get Dewalt or Milwaukee or Makita. I'm
saying it's not because we're talking batteries, it's not a
plug into the outlet is what we're saying. Right. Yeah,
it's a cordless. Yeah. Yeah. And so that's actually the gift
I sure recommend is fair with battery system using mines Dewalt
for my larger batteries. And it's super handy. It pre
purposes an old vacuum into something I can use all the
time. Quick sell out my battery out a couple warnings on
that you don't want to drain the battery to zero. It can
be hard on the battery over time. So I grab a huge battery
with it. I grab like my nine amp hour one that I never
worry about it because it'll use like one bar. And
vacuums do use a ton of power. The small Dewalt
handbag is great. If you've got a tool specific one
Milwaukee one same thing like just pick your poison.
They're so handy. That little pack out one I have is great.
Yeah, the Milwaukee pack out one. But if you've got a shot back
you're replacing again, totally worth the upgrade even if
you have a brand new shot back, the Dewalt specifically the
Dewalt quiet series. Life changing. I can talk over it
while I use it is so worth it. I've got 120 bucks. I've
looked at it so much because
like I can use it at seven in the morning. I'm going to
disrupt my neighbors. It's not red. I know I'll help you paint
it. That's, you know, I've done that I painted my my my
compressor or my pressure washer. So I've got some Scotch
bright. There we go. Yeah. But I mean, these things are pretty
low, low bucks. So if you're like, I don't have to get
somebody in there like why did you give me another shot
back? Go get the quiet series. They're usually on sale at
Lowe's versus Home Depot or Amazon. So keep that in mind.
Lowe's just seems to have the best deal on them. I got a
nine gallon. It was a 12. I think it's a nine. But I
got it for 120 bucks on sale. And they're I think they're
you can get them as low as 100 bucks right now. For Black
Friday, if you go to a six gallon, but the nine the nine
gallon, I think in the 12 have the five and a half or six
horsepower. Both of them are more than enough to clean a
car or shops or whatever you want. And don't forget the
bags. But the fact that you can literally talk over a
shop back to somebody while you're working. Oh my god, I
use it way more now. But I turn it on. So I don't
have to listen to people. True. Okay, that's your
thing. But you know, there's this is an interesting
little fun, something you can get a car person. And I
discovered it. I had never seen these before I was at
Brian's house for a barbecue. And he has the little Lowe's
buckets, but their cups. Yeah, that's such a cool little
idea for somebody that works in a shop. Yeah, they are they
are food safe. They look like the Home Depot makes them
to load. So you know the typical Home Depot bucket and
the Lowe's bucket. They're miniature little ones and
they have handles. They're great little cups. Great
stocking stuffers. In fact, I went and bought some to
give to some friends of mine. And so I really think it's a
needle little idea. That's awesome. Yeah, those are that's
a great stocking stuff right here. This is like I was at
Brian's the hands that to me. I was like, I never want to
like this is perfectly gripped. If I want to hold it by the
little handle I can doesn't you know, I was drinking the
best whiskey out of it. But yeah, it's just kind of a
fun thing. That's a great idea. Yeah, those are fun.
Yeah. I mean, talk to your person, you know, male or
female about the tools they need. My wife's very, very
good about getting information out of me that I didn't
know came out of me. I was like, how did you know this? But
you know, you can always use more tools. There's always
little things. One thing that actually Dan gave me for my
birthday. And it's from Home Depot is the icon series.
It's that miniature fold out ratchet. Oh, that's from
Harbor Freight Harbor Freight. Yeah. So it's a
it's a quarter inch ratchet, but it's not quarter inch
drive. It's like quarter inch bit. Yeah, it's a quarter
inch bit ratchet. So I have three sets of these. And they
have all proven to be very worthwhile. So I have
specifically have a much larger set, which I think is the
same one I got you. I use that one the most for small
electronics, because I do a lot of computer stuff. And just
it but getting into tight spaces, that thing is so
handy. It comes with sockets, everything. But that is a
it's they call it if you look on like the the forums
for Harbor Freight, and there's a ton of them in
the reddit, the subreddits and stuff. They call it the meme
tool, because it's like the tool everybody wants, but they
don't have a lot of purpose for it. Yeah, I use the thing all
the time, constantly. Didn't know I needed it. You gave it
to me. I use it all the time on everything in the house now.
Yeah, yeah. And then I have I have the gear wrench one as
well, which comes with a really long, ratcheted
handle. A couple things keep in mind with these, they're
light duty. They're warrantied. But that said, it's a
quarter inch driver ratchet, it's smaller capacity than a
quarter inch socket ratchet. So don't be torqued on this
thing. It's not meant for that. This is great for, like I said,
PCs, small electronics, anything around the house,
something that doesn't require a lot of torque, getting into
tight spaces. But these things are super handy for me. And
just having that one time in the toolbox is worth it
because the one time you use it will be that this is the
only thing that's going to work for a tool. Yeah. So and
it's perfect stocking stuffer. Have you come up with a good
solution for like, and I know you heating cool in here, but
I'm saying if you didn't have as far as a fan system about
getting air out of the garage, like, I've seen the big the
big fans, like, you know, and then and then the rotating
fans. But I've also thought about doing something like
that, like in the summer, because my garage gets a
little warm. As far as getting you know, and I feel like
that now might be obviously tools and things like that
are on sale right now. And now is the time to look for
these things. Now's the right time to actually look
for an air conditioner, oddly enough. Yeah. And
they're like, so we talked about this with Brian,
they're getting you getting those portable ones now. But I
have the AC up in my office, which is also a heater. It's an
inverter air conditioner slash heat pump. It's an in
window style, but it's in the wall in the office. And then I
have the mini split in here. Mini splits are on sale right
now to with heat pumps. If you have a shop, that's yours,
you're not renting. That is the number one upgrade I
recommend to everybody. It costs virtually nothing to
run it. They're extremely energy efficient. The money is in
the install, like you can get one of these units
this I got this Yeeta home, which is another white label
product. Like there's these pioneer Yeeta, whatever all
these brands are, they're all made in the exact same place. The
logos even look like they're interchanged. Like, yeah, they're
the exact same product. But I mean, you're literally talking,
I pitted my whole shop for I think less than 1000 bucks,
800 bucks, I think so I paid for it on a Black Friday
sale. Like these things, if you haven't, if you haven't
picked up at least two coupon codes at the same time for
one of these, you're paying too much. Like, there is no
difference between any of these, they're getting rid of all
these old ones because of this change in design to the cool
lens. So you can get R 12 ones, which are technically,
technically not illegal, they're going to be illegal to
sell in 27 or something like that. So they're burning down
the way, you know, getting rid of everything out of the
warehouses. They make no difference. Thing works awesome.
I have it on my shop right now has impacted my power
bill is 0%. Even better, maybe like $5. So it's so worth
it for such a large area to
Yeah. This is something, though, that
yes, it should be on your list. You should be talking about
this with your partner if you have one and saying, this is
something we should invest in because it will change the way
you use your shop. So it's actually if you have one don't
have one in your house and you have to do that, they're
fantastic in the Pacific Northwest, but they're
becoming I mean, it started with the Mr. Cool DIY
series. You can do this yourself, you have to go
slow, you have to read the directions, you have to know
what tools you need. But an install on one of these
from an HVAC installer is $1,500 to $2,000.
This has to be done right. That's been right. And you're
dealing with nasty stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Well, even then, not
really. If you've done it right, if you follow the
directions, there's no risk. It's super easy to install.
If, especially if you go with a not not a 240 but when
you just go to the 110 if you have a small shop, you
don't even I mean, wiring, it's even plug in done. But
what about the lines as far as you need a pipe bending
tool most of the time? Some of them you don't some of them
you can just do it by hand if you're really careful and
slow. I say spend $35 in the pipe bending tool. Yes, you
should vacuum out the lines. Yes, you need to cut off AC
service switch and all that. It's really not that hard
though. It's a slow down, slow way down. And take it
step by step, you know, if it might be a full day job,
maybe two days, but it's not hard. It's just go slow,
take your time and you'll be fine. There's a million YouTube
videos on it. A million people posting what they found what
they haven't. If you need to shorten the lines, you'll need
a pipe, you'll need some of their special tools. But even
then if you bought all special tools, you would need
because you're doing this like once you don't need to do
this. You don't need to buy pro tools. You're not going to
become an HVAC installer, spend the 200 bucks on the cheap
tools out there from Harbor Freight and you'll be fine
of everything you need. And you'll be spending 272,000
and it'll work just fine. I've installed three of them.
No problems. I had one where I had a leak, but I knew how
to test it before I did it. So like I did the thing, I
looked like yep, I got a leak there, rechecked my
flared fittings, re-gooped it done. No problem since.
So I mean, it's something obviously it changed this
whole shop have heating and cooling in here. So yeah, it
makes a lot of sense.
Yeah.
Let's see. Next on my list for was whatever your
person should have like you talked about jacks
earlier. If you can get quick jack, if you don't
have a lift, you don't have an option to lift get
quick jacks. They're on sale at Costco right now. It's the
only reason I'm bringing them up. They're super handy. You
won't use them all the time. You'll rarely use them. If you
want to get into someone learning to work on their car
though, they're a game changer. If you don't want to work on
your car, don't bother. But most car guys do they're nice
for detailing. They're a little bulky to have around. So the
wall mounts really help a lot. But they are heavy.
They're very heavy. So you just keep that in mind. Don't
hurt yourself. But they are very useful. And I recommend
them to everybody who hasn't had them before. And then if
you want to go big and really surprise somebody, go reach out
to our friends at Hydraulic Solutions. Yeah. I mean, I think
at the end of the day, and it's a beaten concept, but I
mean, gift cards, it's all you know, you can always if you
know somebody wants lights for their car, you know, like, you
know, off-road car, go get them a gift card from, you
know, HKP custom custom just talk to him actually. Okay,
imagine they are having a 25% off Black Friday deal for
BOT designs and other lights. But he specifically mentioned
me was like, Hey, Dan, I got BOT designs on self 25% off.
Because if I know enough, he knows when he calls us, it's
like, Hey, we can find a place for lights. And if you are an
advanced member said to give them a call, you don't have to
call Ben directly just call HKP tell them you're an advanced
member and he will have more on sale for you than just
their Black Friday. So see good to be an advanced
member if you need lights. It always is. Yeah. And that's
a great call that was that was on my list because I
talked to Ben lights. Oh my God, lights are such a nice game
changer. And yes, there's an BOT designs essay light bar on the
R8. It's hidden away. So it's not just limited to off road
vehicles. Dear hurt. And they leave big dense. Some of us know
and they're great for that. They make a huge difference
there. You don't have to go buy BOT designs LP nines for
they're nice to have, but I want. Yeah, but even some
cheap lights like my BOT designs S2 fogs are just as
bright as my headlights. Yeah, those those the chase lights
I've got are just awesome. Yeah. Yeah. And I think those are
absolutely worth the money. So that can range anywhere from
stocking stuff for size because you can get like the little S1
trailer hitch insert, like this garb you're going to listen
to this you just got that new sq7 doesn't have a trailer
hitch. But when you do because I know your truck
does you can and you don't need a skid plate in there
all the time. You can do that direct plug in S1 trailer hitch
light when you don't have your skid plate in and then you have
a great backup like another sq7. Yeah, good for him. Yeah, after
that other one, I know I'm nothing has been their fault. I
was just like, no, the poor wife. Yeah. Yeah, so they got a he
got a really nice sq7. It was an upgrade over his other
one. Nice. Yeah. So as I'm just working my way through
my mental capacity here. Starlink. Yeah, Starlink mini.
Yep. It's been absolutely amazing. They're on sale right
now. I think they're 200 bucks. Yeah, two to 220 to 20. The
plans have changed, which is you know, they used to be $10 a
month and then a dollar for every gig you went over. I
think it's what is it now it's five gigs I think for
something like that 20 and then it's $2 for every gig
you go over. It's not horrible. I've never gone over. But
the idea of having the you know, I can be anywhere minus
being in a cave, of course. Yeah. And have reception. And
you can go you can buy one and just put it like I do I put mine
in standby mode for five bucks a month. And then I just pay for
a month when I'm going to use it. Yeah. So and that's only like
so just five bucks but that peace of mind. And you don't
need to have a truck or not for a vehicle to have one you
can get Starlink mounts that
why take it I take it off to the truck and we put it on
the Subaru when we go places. Yeah, I've got right now I've
got the I didn't have time to put that external mount on
the F 150. So I spent 25 bucks on Amazon and I got this
on a roof mount. It works just to put it inside. Yeah. Super
easy. And when you're in the middle of nowhere in Nevada or
wherever, like, just fire right up full internet if you ever
need it. And it, you know, you're just on standby. So it
which is I think 500 K down or one megabit like that just
enough to big go in and react about your plan. And then
you're good to go. So you don't have to worry about it
but that kind of peace of mind is better than any cell
phones gonna get you. I mean, you can text most of the
time, but you can send photos and so like this is my
situation, send a video to a FaceTime like that can be
a game changer. It is so nice to have. I was on a call the
other day, driving and my cell phone reception was crap. I
switched over to the Starlink and it was crystal clear. It's
amazing. Yeah, absolutely amazing. Yeah, they should pay
us. They should. Yeah. Come on, Elon. Yeah. Agreed. Another
stock and stuff for idea for anybody on X off road for
those off road members. Right now is their black Friday
special. It's half off. I think it's like 30 or $40 a
year. And on top of that, Onyx has a ton of discount
with other companies too. Yeah, that aren't about spartners. So
you can double up there. But I use it for mapping. It's great
for hunters to I mean, yeah. So that's another easy one. What
else? Oh, my GMRS radios talk about this every year. So I've
switched my radio recommendations over the
years. So I went from ham to GMRS. And the reason I did
is most people using GMRS currently is a lot of you use
both but it's a lot clearer car to car. It's about the
same range. I've noticed I've tested it a couple of
different times. If it's better if you want to go full on
board. But even if you're not into that, if you're just
doing, you know, exotic car rallies, you're just driving
with your buddies. Those GMR GMRS radios are great to have
little handheld ones. And they work great. And I got two for
right now the balfang GMRS specific ones are two for
50. So they're cheap cheap and you can always get the ear
things or you can get little mics and things like
that. Yeah, this one is that if you get the two radio
kit, it's way cheaper than buying the one radio and
adding that on because the two radio kit comes with the
earpiece, the lapel mic and handheld and everything and it
just plugs into that. And you can you can talk to me GMRS GMRS
channels are standard. You have to get a license but it's like
literally fill out this get your license. Yeah. But that's
just a super easy way to communicate with your buddies
on drives for fun. Yeah. Yeah. A lot of good ideas.
Trying to think if there's anything else those are the
ones I had. I mean, obviously go through your
bonds partners like you were saying the gift cards are like,
I don't care. Everybody says nobody's no no no no car person
is offended by gift cards. They're just thankful you got them
because you usually have very specific wants. Yeah, especially
when it comes to tools and things like that. There's a
few things I think everybody should have a good torque
wrench, you know, right now is the time to look though slick
deals, no affiliate. I think they're fantastic. And we're
back after a short intermission. Yeah, I'll work. Yes.
All right. I think one thing and you brought it up and
you actually got me one of these dentries me really well. Is
the is that a gun cleaning mat or is it? Technically, it's a
gun cleaning mat. It's a silicone gun cleaning mat with
magnets with magnet, which is amazing. Yeah. So I don't use it
for gun cleaning. I use it for car parts and projects. So I
have this rolling table. That's about
five. It's about five feet long. And it's counter height. And
it whole and I got a mat specifically for that. So I've
got like a large mouse pad on top of it. And the wood it's
something called rubberwood by the rubberwood is not synthetic
wood, it's wood from a rubber tree. And it's a used in
basically every not high end tool bench you can think of.
Okay, they're all this called rubberwood stuff. So husky
anything like that. That's that's the difference. And one of
things you're paying for is you're not paying for a hard
wood top, you're paying for this stuff called rubberwood
soft does a job who cares to hold stuff. Anyway, to
protect it and to hold hold stuff while I'm doing
projects, I've got these their silicone rubber or silicone
rubber mats. This one's about four feet long, two feet wide.
And it's got these little magnet pads on it. Fantastic for car
projects.
When we were putting the headlights in the truck and
Brian's too, we could take bolts out and they would they
would stay in one point. I mean, how many times have we
done that where you put something on mat and it rolls
away and then rolls it or rolls into another pile and
you're like, where'd that go?
Exactly. This is nice to have those magnetic parts
trays, but this allows you to separate your parts out makes
them really easy to categorize without putting them into
small, small bags for small projects, you know. Anyway,
they're dirt cheap on Amazon, maybe 20 to 50 bucks for even
the nicest one. Yeah. And they just super easy to clean up
that probably last you forever. I like to go with the
brighter color stuff, you can match your stuff. They got
them in every tool color because they have you
know, people like their dual Milwaukee, whatever. Mine's
gray with bright green pads just because I wanted to be
able for visibility. I got Nick a black and red and
white one works with the garage. Yeah, to go with his
Milwaukee one. I think everybody should have one. They're a
cheap little thing. They're great stock and stuff where
they come rolled up so you can just shove them in a
stocking there. Yeah, super handy. And if you are into, you
know, rebuilding and I went and looked at them a little bit
more because I'm looking at them from the gun cleaning
side of things and a lot of really high end like gun not
manufacturers, but people that restore guns use them and
things like that. So that's right. Yeah, the idea was I
think it was targeted marketed to me in that way. And I
was like, No, I need this for tools. No pun. This is awesome
targeted. Yes, targeted to me. Yeah. Yeah. So I think that's a
great one. Also, underneath that, those custom made mouse
mats, mouse pad mats, I use them on most of my surfaces at
work for whatever just for projects. They just make a
little nicer than I have to worry about scratching the
countertop or whatever. cheap insurance. Alright, next on my
list, my second favorite thing in my shop actually is my
speakers. So I have a lot of nice stuff in my shop. Now
I have my recliners, I have my TV and everything, but I love
those speakers because I'll come out here and work and I'll
actually throw in audiobooks more than music these days, and
falling and re falling in love with the Dresden files, which
you've if you've only seen the show, you're kind of
selling yourself short. It's a super long running urban
sci fi series that I would feel super nerdy about, except
it's like one of the most top played things on Amazon. So
I'm not the only one. Also, we're 46. Now we don't
care. Yeah, I don't really care. Anyway, but so I have
Mackie CR five XBT studio monitor Bluetooth speakers. And
like a single Logitech speaker or whatever is fine. They're
great. But they don't hold the candle to good studio
monitors. And they've come down in price enough, especially
during Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals that they are
awesome. I have these things just sitting up in the
corner above. I never have to worry about pairing my
phone with them. I actually have a dedicated little iPad
out here that I use for watching YouTube videos
when working on stuff. But I can play stuff on there. I
just go out to hear that thing actually some magnum in the
back. I usually stick it to the I can stick it wherever I'm
at. And then I can play music on it or whatever. But man, I
love those speakers. They sound 10 times better than
they have the right to like they great, great range,
great bass. Some studio monitors aren't ideal, because
they are actually literally too clear. They're meant to
produce really, really realistic sound. And they're
made to be in a studio environment. So I don't know
if that's a good thing for Mackie or not, because they're a
well respected brand. They're actually local to their base
and bottle. But I love their studio monitors. I have the
three inch ones upstairs in my office as my desktop
speakers, but the five inches in the shop. So as big as
you have the room for in the shop is better. So what I
have on my computer, you have them. You have the
monolith series also fantastic from wonderful. Those
are from who makes the monolith ones. I used to
get all my mono price mono price monolith series.
Fantastic speakers. I don't know if they would sound as
good in the shop because they have a smaller range.
I just love them in my office. They're really good
speakers. Yes. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, they're a lot smaller
footprint than these two. These are pretty big. Because
they they have the amp built in and everything. So you're
not connecting to anything. This is just phone Bluetooth
to here. But I love them. I have given sets away as
gifts before to people and they love them too. So I
think everybody should have a great set of speakers in
their shop. And this doesn't require to have a
receiver and all the other crap. Yeah. So nice. Yeah. And
then I had two more things. Didn't I? I don't remember
either. Well, the other one was the pocket knife. Oh, I
think that's it. Okay, this is I'm gonna say this. That's a
steep step to go down because once you get into pocket
knives, it escalates very quickly. So it doesn't it
doesn't. Here's what I found. So I have more expensive
knives than this. I have nicer knives than this
technically. When it comes to function and you want an
everyday pocket knife and EDC pocket knife as they call it. I
still and after trying ones at much higher cost than this, I
go back to the same knife every time. This is the
Kershaw Leak. I was introduced to this from Doug at
drivers club actually drivers. I still have my drivers
club carbon fiber leak. It's L E K is what it's
called. And it's just been the best knife I've ever
had. It's got a really smooth action. So it's super
easy to open one hand super easy to close with one
hand. It's small enough that it fits in my hand really
well and it tucks in my pocket really well. And it's carbon
fiber. So I think it looks kind of cool. It's got a nice dry
carbon resin. And that I've had this one sharpened. This is
my newer one. I have the drivers club one kind of put
away just because I like the way it looks and I want to
hold on to it. But I've had this one sharpened twice
and it's razor sharp out of the box. But it's even
better after you get a pro at it.
Does it have that done? Buffalo blade works in
Snoqualmie right here guiding fuzzy. He actually he
actually was no I mean the local mayor race for a while.
He's a you know bearded biker dude. Nice is one of the
nicest guys you'll ever meet and just incredible with
knives. He does my kitchen knives. He does all these
things. But I see the Kershaw leak and especially
another it's another black Friday deal you can even
get this carbon one for like 80 bucks. But I never
wore out my original one from drivers club that I
used and carried every day for five years. This is
a and you can service these things. So something
breaks or anything like that. Kershaw is just down an
organ. They're made in USA. So I just a good quality
pocket knife once you have one even if all you do is
open up Amazon boxes the whole time with it. You'll
be glad you had it. But I use mine for far more than
that. So I recommend everybody should have one guy
girl whatever. Ironically I have one in my truck
that you gave me I don't think it might be
Gerber. Yeah it's either a Gerber or Smith and
Wesson. Yeah. Oh Smith and Wesson Smith and
Wesson. Yeah. The reason I have a different one in
the car is because I let in the if you have if you
carry a pocket knife in your car which is really
handy to have everything from cutting tire plugs
if you have to patch a tire cutting off a seat
belt worst case scenario. But the ones I look for
in cars have glass breakers. Yeah. And that's
really important. Another one of those things sort
of like a jump starter which I didn't talk about
this time because we've talked about them I
think for every year we've had the show you
should have a jump start on my now you
should yeah you then you haven't listened long
enough you need a jump starter and you need
a smaller compressor in your car period. Those
three are friends at more play they're having
a great deal right now. But I still think
everybody should have a pocket knife with a
glass breaker because you may come to an accident
where you have found somebody who is stuck in
their car or disabled in their vehicle and trust
me you think you can break a car window until
you try and break a car window. It is strong
really hard and a glass breaker you touch it
it'll break. So big difference. I see him do it
a cops do it all the time with the
batons. It's easy. Yeah. Sovereign citizens.
Oh jeez. Those idiots. Yeah. Yeah. So I but that's
like the one thing I think everybody should have
is and get used to having get used to carrying
is just a little pocket knife. It's not an assault
tool. It's not. I'm clarifying this is not
for you know self protection. No. No. This is a
tool. This is a tool for. Yeah. I mean I would
have better pick if I was going to get a knife.
Yeah. This is like a pocket knife for use
and just like I said once you have one you
will never not carry one because they just
go in handy all the damn time. A little
things. Agreed. So yeah. I think that's a good
place to end it. It's been a good show. Yeah.
So go check out those events partners. Go
see your friends at HKPs. Thanks Ben for

About this episode
Dan and Nick dive into spark plug basics, explaining why they wear out, the impact of fuel mixtures, and the differences between plug types like iridium and platinum. They share practical tips on spotting worn plugs and discuss the rising costs, including exotic car markups. The conversation then shifts to Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, highlighting tool deals, memberships like Evance, and partnerships with platforms like Cars and Bids. They emphasize smart spending, especially on automotive tools and services, while sharing personal shopping strategies and holiday greetings.
We're dropping this one early because it's time to shop for holiday shopping! Obviously the first thing on your list should be an Avants membership of course, but we've got a great list of things you or someone you know probably wants!
