Microbursts are sudden, heavy bursts of rain from a storm. For driving, they can dump a lot of water quickly, making it easier for your tires to lose traction.
Hydroplaning is when your tires hit a layer of water and can’t grip the road well. Your car may slide or feel hard to steer and stop, even if you turn the wheel or press the brake.
Term
layman's terms
“Layman’s terms” means explaining something in a simple way that doesn’t use technical words. In this case, they’re making the driving risk easier to understand.
Car
1983 short box toyota four-wheel drive
He’s talking about an older Toyota truck from 1983 with a shorter bed and four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive means power goes to the wheels that help it grip better on dirt, snow, or rough roads.
A maintenance plan is a checklist of car services you do regularly, like inspections and routine upkeep. The idea is that staying on schedule helps you avoid bigger, more expensive problems later.
He’s using a common phrase to make a point: if you keep doing the same thing and nothing improves, you need to change your approach. In this episode, that means not skipping the steps that prevent car problems.

glad that you're here with us, we're going to cover a lot of information in a very short period
of time, but it won't be quite like sucking on a fire hose, okay maybe like a garden hose instead.
Well we got a lot to jump into this morning so if you're in the queue,
sitting in the drive-thru, make sure you'd flub-dipple check your order, we are on the back door
of the weekend, a big reminder, Saturday's Q&A session coming up, that one hour program where
I break out three questions that you, our loyal listeners send to me, so you have till noon
tomorrow is the cutoff time for that, so if you want to send in a question and then listen to me
unpack it in its entirety, not just give you a fluffy answer, but actually give you a answer
that you can understand, then I need your questions by noon on Friday, motormouth.jankins.gmail.com,
that's motormouth.jankins.gmail.com or nile at ccbusnet.com, b-u-s is in samnet.com,
short for car connection business network, which brings us to our homepage of our website,
is where you'll find all the project details and links that are available
at carconnectionbusinessnetworkccbusnet.com, you'll find everything on our homepage if you'd like
to follow the build and repair work that we do and connect with our program partners, just click
on their logo, that will take you into their profile pages, all the profile pages are set up
exactly the same for ease of navigation, you will not get lost, so everything we talk about lives
on our website, it's the biggest drawer we have in our toolbox, we now have a profile page
put together explaining all the details behind our car connection, fleet maintenance system,
and it's not just for fleets, it's for, if you have two or three vehicles in your parking lot
at home, your driveway, you have a small fleet, so I wanted to make sure that I clarify that,
we used to call it the car connection maintenance schedule, and we may end up going back to that,
maybe the fleet maintenance thing is throwing you off, it's all about having a plan, and we're going
to be unpacking that a little bit more, yesterday we talked about is it time, that's one of the
emails that I have received or conversations I've had live on radio since 1996,
is when do you call it, so we covered that yesterday, when do you say
enough's enough, I'm not forgetting the parts can and out anymore, and putting any more money into
this older vehicle, when do you make that decision, if you missed yesterday's podcast,
I answer all those questions that may be rattling around in your head, do we really want to keep
putting money into an older vehicle, well here's what I like to point out to you,
if your vehicle's paid off and you didn't just get it yesterday, and it's a 2026, guess what
you're driving, an older vehicle, if you've had a loan on that vehicle for five years and you've
paid it off, is it still a new vehicle or is it an older vehicle, it's five years old,
you get my drift, so if you're outside a warranty is it a new vehicle or an older vehicle,
it's an older vehicle, so you know we got to get outside of being a consumer and be a prosumer,
and you know it all comes down to today's topic, absolutely does, just a little effort
is what I've entitled this morning's podcast, and yesterday it was is it time, if you missed that
yesterday's podcast you can grab that off our YouTube channel, so again on our homepage or
website, everything happens there, get to carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com, ccbusnet.com,
that's where you'll find everything you need to connect with us because now we have more ways
for you to watch, listen, and engage, so come and join us Monday through Saturday,
we have three new videos that go up every single week on our YouTube channel teaching the five
things of vehicle maintenance, what it is, where it is, how it works, how you broke it,
and why it's costing you money to fix it, and what could you learn to avoid a second edition,
a part two of the same, because it does happen, trust me, 44 years as a tech,
there's not much I haven't seen, but when I see something I haven't seen before I go,
really, that's about all I can say, wow, that's very interesting, super interesting,
top right hand corner of our homepage is where you'll find all the links, if you haven't subscribed
yet to our YouTube channel, you are missing out on a lot of the repair work that we do,
and it's not getting in too deep for you, it's just teaching you the basics, how things go wrong,
and how we make correction, and understanding how those systems work will help to save you money,
and driving and owning an older automobile actually saves you a ton of money, and that's what we're
going to cover today, is I have some questions for you, instead of you bringing questions to me,
and they're designed to get you to think, as my psychology professor, my good friend who passed
away many years ago, he would say, you know, 38 years as a psychology professor, my job's been
really easy for the most part, and I go, really? How so? He said, well, first, you know,
you've got to get people to think, he said, once you can get them to think along the right lines,
and then the right mindset, then we're moving forward, we're not going backwards, but where it
gets difficult, motormouth, is then I got to get them to think right. I go, ah, that sounds very
familiar. I said it sounds very much like the trade I'm in, so mileage does not matter, maintenance
does. I want to get that drilled into your head, get your coffee ready, because we're going to have
our morning coffee, so we do that every morning, so if you're joining us for the first time, we have
our morning swiggy, prepare your beverage, we're going there in about 30 seconds. So on the top
right hand corner of our homepage, at carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com, you can like, subscribe,
share, ring the notification bell, so you don't miss a single automotive tech tip that's going to
save you a ton of money. All you have to do, folks, is learn some basics, and I don't care what size
you are, what color gender you are, if you drive a car and you learn the basic
fundamentals, you're already further ahead than the person that just turns the key and drives a
vehicle into the ground. That is costing that person a lot of money, money. Big time.
I'm here to help you to put money back in your pocket, have peace of mind driving, enjoy happy,
healthy moldering, and be in control of your own vehicle's maintenance. It's that simple.
You know, just like you have to take care of your mouth health and your physical health,
and you know when you're neglecting yourself, at some point, your body's going to give up
the ghost and say, enough's enough, I'm feeling like dog poopy on your shoe, I've got problems,
and I'm going to get your attention, and then you're going to have to start a plan.
And it's no different than saying, you know, I know I'm a fat blob, and I know I need to lose weight,
and I know I've eaten things that I shouldn't have been eating, and I've gotten to where I've
gotten to because I did it myself. It's exactly the same pattern for taking care of your automobile.
And we talked about that yesterday. What's going to change? What will change if you're weak in the
area of vehicle maintenance? Oh, that was me. Excuse me. Everything is a microphone, you know.
That's the way it works. If I tap here, you can hear it, or here, or here. Yeah, it's just the
way it is. But anyways, if you're weak in the area of vehicle maintenance on this one, on this
particular vehicle you have, I spoke about this yesterday. This is the tagline from yesterday.
What will change on the next one? Did you ponder that overnight? If you listened to the podcast
yesterday, if you missed it, you can grab it on our YouTube channel. All the podcasts load up there
automatically. And our YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Stephensville on the web were
posted there as the automotive professional. So all three of those community sites you can follow
like share, and also see bloopers, outtakes, and reels that you will not see anywhere else. So
Skippy, our videographer, she sneaks them in there. You'll also see our merch store. We've been
getting asked a lot. Do you have any merch? Yes, we do, and we are going to add some more products.
I just haven't had a chance to focus on that area yet, but we will add some more products for the
summer into our Freedom Expressions online store. You can order safely online, pay online, and they
ship it directly to your door. And Skippy and I, we don't take any proceeds from that. We turn
it back to Total Freedom Addiction Campuses Canada and US that are changing lives every single day,
and we want to be able to make an effort to get them there. So if you want to stand with the crew,
buy some gear, and know that you're helping and standing with Skippy and I to get that next person
to a Total Freedom Addiction Campus, whether it's in Canada or USA. They change lives every single
day. So together, we can change another life. So let's have our morning swiggy together,
brought to us by City Auto Sales and Leasing, providing low mileage quality vehicles at fair
prices. Greater Toronto Area's Premier pre-owned auto store. They have a decent inventory under
roof and on the lot, but if Earl and Louise hear from you, you're looking for something specific.
Earl doesn't drag home a dead horse, if you know what I'm saying. He's a car guy through and through,
and they love providing beautiful pre-owned vehicles for you to be the next caregiver. So if
the vehicle you're looking for is out there, they have 25 years in the biz and a lot of resources
to find that specific vehicle. And if it's any good, Earl, bring it home. If not, it stays right
where it is. So you're in good hands at City Auto Sales and Leasing. They have in-house financing
and leasing available to you as well. And Mama Louise will take very, very good care of you. So
you are in very good hands there. So feel free to referral family, friends, your neighbors,
coworkers. Those are in your tight circle to go there and purchase a vehicle because you can do it
with honesty, being treated with honesty and integrity, and you'll be able to buy a vehicle
with confidence knowing you're not buying somebody else's hoopty. So on 321 thank you,
Earl and Louise, Mama Louise, for looking after us the way you do. Let's have our morning
squiggity together. 321 let's go. Mm-hmm. Tony, I am so looking forward to some
coffee today. I had to hit the road yesterday and go and get parts and supplies. And man, I just,
it wakes me up being out on the road. It really does. The driving habits are, hey, you know,
I'm not perfect. I don't walk on water or anything like that. But let me tell you,
I'm a very cautious driver. I'm watching everybody and you need to, honest to goodness,
you need to watch everybody. The things that they pull is just, you look and you go, well,
that was a near miss. Gee, I don't know how come of that. You know, you pulled right out in front
of the dude. Oh my goodness. Lights on, the switch is on, but the light is off. So be careful out
there. Happy, healthy, moldering. And keep an eye on the other guy. Well, we got our daily weather
today. Today, I was up at 10 after three this morning. I thought I saw Dorothy and Toto go by
my bedroom window. It was pretty wild here on the south shores of Lake Erie at 3, 305, 310 this morning.
Went outside to get the water off the top of the gas bowl. Yeah, it was sagging in. The water was
coming down. These microbursts put down a lot of water in a short period of time. So be careful
out there when you're driving because you can easily hydroplane. And what does that mean in
layman's terms? Yee-haw! The car's going wherever it wants to go and you can turn that steering
wheel and pump the brake, but it's sliding on a layer of water. And these microbursts put down a
lot of water in a very short period of time. So thank you to the Grimo family for Kathy and Dave
and Dan at Niagara Block, 5,000 Montrose Road, Niagara Falls, building Canada since 1931 with
creating all kinds of cinder blocks and building blocks to create that building that you want to
put together. And they have the metal works as well to go along with it. If you're looking to create
that beautiful backyard space where you can hang out with your peeps or just be, if you know what
I'm saying, just a place where you can go and just be, they do that as well. So hardscape,
landscaping materials, they have everything you need, including they can refer you to a contractor
that can put together the package and get the work started and of course get it finished so
that you can enjoy it. Well, thank you to Niagara Block for this morning's weather warning. We have
a yellow warning for wind this morning in the Niagara region. Yes sir, and it's, that's what woke me
up at just a little after 3 a.m. I thought for sure the planet was coming apart and the wind was
wicked. So those conditions, yes I would agree, started around 2 a.m. because that's when I started
to kind of wriggle in my bed and go, what is going on out there? I heard deck chairs moving
and I'm going, I think I'd better get up and go and have a looky sea and it was a good thing that
I did. Rainy conditions expected around 7 a.m. So that's coming up shortly. Wind gusts up to 65
kilometers an hour are making temperatures feel like. Let's go over to the big league here and
find out what else we could get on the weather report for rain. Rain is, RAIN is going to be 0.2
of an inch today. I can, I've got water all the way up halfway up my driveway right now.
The, the ragu is going to need putting boots on to get to it. 66 degrees right now with windy
conditions. Wind's making it feel a whole lot cooler so be careful out there. 65 kilometer
hour winds in the Niagara region. It's about 58 degrees. Rainy conditions expected around
7 a.m. and today's temperature range will reach 60 to 69 will feel more like 53 to 62. Yesterday,
yesterday we tapped out at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit and today we may reach 69 will be
skies the limit today. Yeah, that's going to, that's going to be all the sky is going to allow
us to have is 69 so make sure you take your Nellie with you and dress for the occasion.
Whatever that may look like a wetsuit. I don't know if you're in a condition a financial condition
where you feel like you're backed in a corner. Well, don't worry babies. We have the team to help you.
I'd like to thank Tony Miele and Larry teacher or certified financial planning professionals
over 50 years experiences fiduciaries for bringing you this morning's
motor mouth morning drive. You have access to a one hour in a coffee discovery meeting and you
don't need to take any money with you whatsoever. So leave your goodies at home and sit down and
get your questions answered. That's the best thing I can suggest to you is choose Tony or Larry but
arrange that hour in a coffee discovery meeting put all the cards on the table. Let them know
what's going on what's on your heart and bring clarity to your circumstances. They deal with
portfolios debt estate planning mortgages life insurance critical illness insurance and a whole
lot more services. So if you feel like you're drowning and getting beat up by the debt dragon
where you just need some clarity to your fan financial circumstances and how things can be
maneuvered folks I can tell you this your life will change with that discovery meeting your eyes
will be wide open. So take that opportunity and say thank you to Tony Miele and Larry teacher
for making today's podcast available to you. So let's jump right into our topic. I'm going to
back up the bus just a little bit after yesterday's program for those who perhaps missed it so that I
can bring you into today's program properly. So yesterday was a segue into this morning's
programming. So the biggest question and the most popular question that I've answered since 1996
on the airwaves is is it time when do you call it spending money on an automobile
and so I gave you five things yesterday five step plan a wrote and then you rotate the plan
the pattern just rotate the pattern what do you do when you get to the bottom start at the top
and that's how our car connection maintenance schedule works. So there's a full profile page
on our website check it out there's an order form there if you are subscribed to our youtube
channel just indicate that it's an honesty thing for a special discount on our maintenance
system and you fill out the order form and I ship that directly to you from our studio so it
comes from me directly right to you and it's easy peasy to use as I've said before if you can
write your own grocery list and follow it and check the items off as they go in the basket
you can do the car connection maintenance schedule on your any any type of vehicle whatsoever and
just follow it check off the items on the list get to the bottom start the next month get to the
bottom of that one start the next month so all the details are at carconnectionbusinessnetwork.com
so the question when do we call it when do we walk away when do we throw in the towel when do we go
get a car loan or extended line of credit and go back into debt on an automobile when you have one
that could very easily as long as it's not rotted out in the subframes and the structural integrity
is fine you've got something to work with you know as long as you're not putting more oil in the
engine than you are gasoline in the tank then you're in the right position this is where marketing
has done a great job at really brainwashing consumers into believing after the warranty
runs out it's time to run to the sales office and get another one not true that's a load of
balona a load of balona it's not true and it's a lie from the pit of hell mileage does not matter
age does not matter maintenance matters and that's what i focused on yesterday so if you're weak in
the area of vehicle maintenance on the present vehicle that you have by running to the sales
office or buying another car what is going to change that's my big question what's going to change
you will continue to treat the replacement vehicle like a bad bad donkey just like you did to the
one you had to get rid of because you ran it into the ground and then you didn't want to spend the
money on it and fix it but i'll take it in and i'll fix it and put it back out there how is that
possible because i'll just do all the maintenance and repair work that you weren't willing to do
ding ding ding i'll give you a real one
ding ding ding how was it that i can do that oh you're a mechanic oh i see is that the only answer
what if i wasn't and i know how to do that stuff what if i wasn't a license tech but i
know my way around automobiles then what would you say that kind of removes that from the table
doesn't it in a hurry absolutely you have to be your mechanic that's who you have to be you have
to learn to become being your mechanic to go see the mechanic and let them know what you
need to have done to your vehicle i mean if it's got a diagnostic issue that's different
but for regular maintenance that's why if you're following a plan you know what needs to be done
next you know what needs to be done next so yesterday we talked about at what point do you call it
number two it's having seems to be having constant issues and now it turn it's turning
into an emotional thing number three how did it get that bad in the first place how did it get that
run down did it do it by itself or did it have some help from somebody you know you may really know
who it is number four negligence it's generally maintenance negligence and lack of maintenance
that gets it there every single time so do you decide to spend and get out there and kill yourself
trading time for money to make a car payment and then when money gets tight at home guess what
the intense moments of fellowship with your spouse begin to get more intense
because things are tight and right now i'm doing some research i always do a day of research
once a week see what's going on in the industry and stay on top of things it's not good out there
people are walking away from cars homes the whole nine yards we are in a recession and i don't care
what media says it we are and how do i know that well it's exactly like the last two that i've been
through in my lifespan so far yes been through two of them and the one back in the 80s was
probably i'm going to say the worst and i've said it before interest rates 17.93
percent on a car loan i had at that time my mortgage was almost 20 percent yeah i was paying nothing
but interest on the monthly mortgage payment i was living on the Hamilton mountain i had a shop
out there i opened in 1991 on the Hamilton mountain so spend money on what you currently have
or move on either way you're spending money that's the point in in number five from yesterday's podcast
so i'm not going to unpack that whole thing it's already done said did and it's in our youtube
channel you can find that it's already there it lands just moments after it's scheduled here
on all the podcast platforms Spotify apple amazon podbean wherever you pull your podcast from just
look for car connection workshop we're there so let's jump into today's so yesterday was a segue
for today i've given you another five step pattern five things and i title this one just a little
effort wins and that's all it is not asking you to give up two days worth of sleep or a pizza
wing party or anything like that it's just called effort putting the vehicle into your schedule
so that you stay on top of that vehicle as far as maintenance and repairs goes
so that you're saving money but if you're not interested in saving money then this is definitely
not a place for you to pull over in park because i'm here for those who are going you know what
i'm ready to listen you know as my professor would say when the student is ready the teacher will appear
so ponder that one probably took me about 35 years figure that out in a pretty good decent size
cup of joe when the student is ready the teacher will appear vehicles don't need to cost you the
bucks that they have been because it's neglect that gets you there to that big service order
and that's where i would help my customers and my clients i wasn't interested in customers i was
interested in clients clients are loyal to you customers are flavor of the month i was never
interested in those people whatsoever because you know what i can't help them because when
you're b bopping from one place to another and have your car fixed those are the worst cars on the
planet even for me to pick up and go through because every neanderthal that thinks they know
enough about automobiles has been at the thing and it's a mess it's an absolute mess and i can't tell
you the number of times i don't open the hood the customer the customers there and i look and i'm
looking and i'm and i just i can't believe what i'm looking at and then i close the hood and i just
say you're going to need to take it somewhere else i just can't i can't afford to give you the time
that it's going to take to sort this out well what do you mean i said well i can obviously see
you're either taking it to the same neanderthal that thinks he knows how to fix your car and
you're paying the guy yeah you know you can pay monkeys to fix the car but here i'm
going to have to fix everything i've seen before i can even fix what still needs to get done it
wasn't worth it for me to get under there and touch it because as soon as i touch it i own everything
then the neanderthal did getting in there and messing stuff up i own it so there's no way i
learned how to get smart that's a job i don't want to touch that's a car i do not want to touch
the vehicles i want to work on are the ones that are following our lead and guiding them with vehicle
maintenance preventing them from coming in on a flatbed so if that's of interest to you you are
on the right channel so number one today i'm going to give you five what ifs so this is what
i'm going to leave you with today for you to ponder so just a little effort and i know you can do it
if you decide to do it you can do it that's it it's the it's the three log three
frogs on the log three you'll have to go back and listen to that podcast just a little effort
wins and what do you win money back in your pocket peace of mind driving and not having to trade a
whole lot more of your time home to work to make a stupid car payment
and i'm saying that to myself not to you not disrespecting any of you i did it not
once i did it twice and i didn't like it either way the first vehicle and i spoke about it yesterday
mole i still own it i bought it when i was 22 it sold to me at 11 200 and with interest then which
was 17.93% back in the 80s it's a 1983 short box toyota four-wheel drive 11-2 cost me 22-5
that's why i say stupid i was still an apprentice i was working my through the apprenticeship
program through mohawk college on the handle to mountain and you know what i was like a starving
artist and i was working extra hours and doing stuff on the side just to make that payment
that's why i called stupid was a vehicle worth that much of my life and my time
in order to pay it off that i you know i had to have it and i paid the price for it
so here we go because i can't do this all day what if you actually have a maintenance plan that
you're following what if number two what if you actually had that maintenance plan and you actually
implemented the plan what if you truly followed the plan
and what if you really saved money what if that really happens
hmm what you should be saying is why is he saying these things why is motormouth putting
these things on the table that's what you should be asking yourself why did he say that
and my professor would always say the same thing he'd say if there's an exam coming up
and i say things like you might want to write this down or you might want to study a little
more on that topic he would say to us do you think i'm just saying that to waste my breath
or am i giving you a clue that there's something waiting for you at the end if you take more
time on those areas i'm pointing your compass needle to because that's what i'm doing i'm
pointing your compass needle into everything that i've done for 44 years as a tech and before that
that saves you money you know there's a reason i have a vehicle that's going to be 20 years old
july the sixth and just shy of 400k it didn't happen on its own i'm telling you the things
that if you do it what if what if it really saved you time and money together what would that look
like for you for your household for your person how would that make you feel that's the question i'm
asking there of yourself and number five what if you just decided not to do it what if you just
don't do it then it's the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and
over and over again but expecting a different outcome you if you always do what you've always done
you'll always get what you've always got and i leave you with that today these are some things
to ponder you have to make that decision and for the person that is the naysayer i give you no time
whatsoever because i don't care you can be the big toe in the puddle you can be right all day long
i'll totally agree with you all the time this program is not for you i'm for
the person that is ready that is that person that says the do does and the did is done i'm not interested
in talking to a cinder block i'm interested in helping those out there that are ready to say you
know what i just need that poke i just need that encouragement and i just need someone to help me
to get there i am too sick and tired fed up disgusted and bored with always making a car payment
always having to trade time for money and get ready to buy another car and
another car and it never ends so what if you just don't do it and what if it really can save you
money what if they are wrong what if what if they are so the net result will outweigh all the excuses
why not to do it so start today and start saving time and money you can do it
i'm right here and i'm not going anywhere you can tap into our youtube channel and you can visually
learn and you can tap into our podcast and audibly learn you've got both ways to be able to learn how
to win the car game because that's all it is folks it's the car game and i'm unpacking the rules
and regulations that will save you time money and stress and you can own an automobile it doesn't
matter how old it is how many years have gone by how many miles have gone by it doesn't matter
it's maintenance that matters if you're willing to put in that effort what if it could save you a
lot of money what if you don't do it we'll see you tomorrow for another motor mouth morning drive
make it a great day stay out of the puddles remember don't go splashing through those deep
puddles slow down because you'll break stuff trust me expensive components that do not like to be
power washed they don't trust me and we have a lot of now the engine bays are so small we have a lot
of low hanging fruit stuff that should not be accessible by water under pressure so we have
to learn these things because we're in this thing together called the car game happy healthy
motoring friends we'll see you tomorrow morning at the same time 8 a.m for another
motor mouth morning drive peace patience and kindness always and we'll see you in the next one bye for now
About this episode
A quick welcome and weather/safety heads-up set the stage before the show’s core idea: “effort” beats neglect. The host frames a maintenance plan as the “what if” that saves time, money, and stress—whether it’s following the schedule, avoiding deep puddles, or not assuming you replace the car right after warranty ends. Along the way, they explain why maintenance matters more than mileage and how proactive care can prevent flatbed/tow headaches.
Yesterday we asked a tough question: when is it time to walk away from a vehicle. Today, we're looking at the other side of that conversation.
What if you had a maintenance plan?
What if you actually followed it?
What if sticking to the plan saved you time, money, and frustration?
In Episode 194 of the Car Connection Podcast, I share five simple "what if" questions that can completely change the way you think about vehicle ownership and maintenance. Whether you drive one vehicle or manage an entire fleet, a little effort today can prevent major headaches tomorrow.
The reality is simple: excuses are expensive. Good habits are profitable.
Run the pattern, follow the plan, and stack the odds in your favour every time.
