The Buick Grand National is a performance car made by Buick. It’s known for having a turbo engine, and it’s often associated with a black exterior. People talk about it because it’s a well-known model for fast, turbocharged driving.
A “2J swap” means installing a Toyota 2JZ engine into a different car than it originally came with. It’s a common enthusiast engine swap because the 2JZ is known for strong aftermarket support and the ability to handle big power when built correctly.
USDM means U.S.-spec parts. When people say “USDM” in a swap, they usually mean the engine is from the version sold for the U.S., which can affect wiring and setup.
Mobile detailing is when the detailer comes to you. Instead of driving to a shop, they wash and clean your car at your home or workplace.
Term
washing gloss
“Washing gloss” means washing in a way that keeps your paint looking shiny. Detailers try to clean without scratching, so the car doesn’t lose its shine.
Paint correction is when a detailer polishes your car’s paint to remove scuffs and swirl marks. It makes the paint look smoother and shinier without needing a new paint job.
UV protection refers to additives in a product that help reduce damage from ultraviolet light, which can fade and degrade interior and exterior materials over time. In detailing, UV-protectant ingredients are commonly used on trim, plastics, and interior surfaces.
Perma Plate is a coating product some dealerships offer. In this conversation, they’re saying it’s similar to ceramic coating, but it doesn’t work the same way with water.
A UV protectant is a product ingredient or additive designed to reduce damage from ultraviolet sunlight. On car paint, UV exposure can contribute to fading and degradation over time. Ceramic coatings and similar sealants may include UV protection as part of their overall protection package.
Ceramic coating is a protective layer you put on your car’s paint. After it cures, it forms a slick “shell” that helps dirt and water slide off more easily. It helps with stains and water spots, but it won’t stop rock chips the way tougher protection would.
Rock chips are little spots where small stones hit your car and damage the paint. They can start as tiny marks but may get worse over time. The point here is that ceramic coating helps with stains and water, but it won’t stop rocks from chipping the paint.
PPF is a clear protective film that you stick onto your car’s paint. It helps protect against rock chips and small scratches, but it can be hard to apply neatly on complex body panels.
A ceramic coat is a protective layer you put on your car’s paint. It helps water and dirt slide off more easily, but you still need to wash it the right way to keep it looking good.
A pre wash is the first step before you scrub or wipe the car. You spray off the loose dirt first so you’re less likely to scratch the paint when you start washing by hand.
A contact wash is when you actually wash the car by hand with a mitt or brush. Since you’re touching the paint, it’s best to remove loose dirt first so you don’t grind grit into the finish.
A foam cannon is a tool that sprays soapy foam onto your car. The foam helps loosen dirt and lets you rinse it off before you start scrubbing with a mitt.
pH is a measure of how strong/acidic or how alkaline a cleaner is. A “higher pH” cleaner is often chosen to help lift tough grime before you touch the paint.
Dwell time is how long you let the cleaner sit on the car before rinsing it off. Letting it sit helps the soap loosen dirt so you don’t have to scrub as hard.
A rinse-less wash (often discussed alongside waterless washing) is a method where you clean the car with minimal or no rinsing. It’s generally intended for light contamination like dust, because the product’s lubricity and chemistry can’t safely handle heavy grit the way a full pre-wash + rinse can.
A waterless wash is cleaning the car without rinsing it with lots of water. It works best when the car is only lightly dusty—if there’s real dirt on it, wiping can cause scratches.
Detailing brushes are small, purpose-made brushes for cleaning hard-to-reach spots on a car. They help you get dirt out of grooves and tight areas without rubbing it in or damaging the surface.
The Chevrolet C10 is a pickup truck, usually from the older classic era. In the podcast, they’re working on one that’s been built as a show truck, including a brand-new chassis underneath. That means it can keep the classic look while being safer and more modern to drive.
“Manual” means you shift gears yourself using a clutch pedal and a stick. It can feel more connected to the car, especially on a powerful custom truck.
“Burning” the car here means you can accidentally damage the paint while polishing it. If you mess it up, fixing it can cost a lot because the paint is so expensive.
LIVE
Hey and welcome back to the next episode of the right-hand drive guys podcast the podcast for guys who like right-hand drives
I'm Bobby. This is Aaron. Yeah, yo, and here we are yet again. This is like episode
179 or something something like that. I'll figure it out at some point
But we're up we're up there dude, and I would I would not rather spend this episode with anybody
But our good friend Shawn Charles. What's up, dude? How's it going, man? Bobby Aaron?
Yeah, and so we we've known Shawn I mean for like ever right like yeah Shawn is from
Nashville Murphysboro, Tennessee
and so obviously that's where Aaron's from and
So yeah, and I met him when I was down there and so Shawn owns the detailed department and yes, sir
And also the detailing company is it the same thing? No, so it's something different. It's called washing gloss auto spot. Yeah
So kind of made them a little separate, but definitely
so
Yeah, like and how long how long have you been detailing? So I've been detailing
Like professionally for right about six years
Full-time
Yeah, it was something that was like a hobby on my like that I used to do just on the weekends
Just wash my own vehicle and stuff like that and then people kept asking. Hey, man. Who uh details your car
I'm like me
Yeah, that's that's the best right like who yeah who does that for you? I do
Yeah, oh, yeah, so six years ago you get in you get into it, right?
But like yeah, you are I mean dude
You're like an og in Nashville as far as being around cars like you've been in the car game for like ever
Yeah, I've been been doing it for a while for sure
Like and I was thinking about this earlier, right like okay, so what okay here we go. What is Sean's?
Car style what how do you describe the cars? You know over time like what is Sean is bro?
everything
Dude, he is not tied down to anything from what I can tell at least like
As long as it's I don't know as long as it makes cool noises. It seems like that's what you're sure
Man anything with a motor in it, man
I like you know, I like the imports and then I like the domestic and I like to lift the trucks, so
One day I'll have a domestic definitely won a Grand National, but that's
Definitely what like black, right? Oh, yeah. Yeah
Yeah
Got to so
Like all right, so as far as import cars like I don't know. Have you had a right-hand drive?
No, I haven't had a right-hand drive. Maybe one day. I'd love I would love to have a chaser a chaser
That's what I would picture you in too because like from what I remember like
It was almost like VIP style, right for sure. Yeah, like that's what I would describe it if we're talking about import
Typecars it was always like that that style. Yeah, definitely. I had a
sd300 with a usdm 2j swap
Damn with a v1 66 speed. I had that
Had that for about 23 years and then it ended up somebody really wanted by it for me
So I ended up selling it so I know kind of regret it
It is what it is. Yeah, I mean, I think we we all and especially I'm sure people listening
They can agree like we all got that car or those cars that you're like damn if I still had that dude, like
You know, yeah, definitely, you know, man super so
Oh for sure, but that's the thing
It was like sleeper in the sense of nobody would think that you literally had the super drivetrain
In that car obviously it's a known thing, but like that was like a dark green. Was it dark green? Yeah
Yeah, it was a dark green. Yep, dude. It had it. Did it did it have a big single?
Yeah, I had a big single and a single exhaust. Yeah. Yeah, the the kid that bought it
Used to come out to the drift events. I think right. I think it was like Trent or something like that
I don't remember his name, but yeah, I remember that car definitely ripped like it was a good running car
like
Okay, so I remember you back in the day right and the my
Like vivid memory is being down at the bridge and we talked about this a little bit
I think in the last few episodes, right like the bridge was just like
You know, it's by the titan stadium to downtown. It's a walking bridge. There's big parking lots
We would take these parking this parking lot over like yeah
Huge parking lot and everybody's just bringing their cars dude at one point
Like four wheelers and like, you know different things
But I remember pulling up and you and squirt were in his skyline
And you guys were beatboxing and rapping
Like like dude, I was like, dude, these dudes are legit. I'm like because I was kind of a movie
Yeah, like I kind of knew you guys but but didn't and I'm like asking these dudes
I'm when I'm like, are these dudes like legit? Like are these dudes like signed or something because you're also in a skyline
Like way back then and I'm like, you know, but that was like my earliest memory. They're like, no dude
That's Sean and squirt and I'm like, oh shit. All right. Cool. Uh for sure. So
But dude, that was a long time ago. It was man, man
That was the bridge days where people can hang out downtown Nashville and not get kicked out
Yeah, for sure. Like it was it was actually pretty good. They're really unless people started doing the silly stuff like the burnouts
It really wasn't an issue and you look back on those days compared to now, right?
And I'm sure a lot of people can agree. It's like, dude, things have changed. It kind of sucks
It does for sure like
The import seems kind of like dying down a little bit because you know, everybody likes to do the parking lot thing man
You can't go anywhere anymore and just hang out without maybe somebody doing something stupid or
Or the cops get involved and they just want you not to sit around in the parking lots though
Yeah, it's like weird. It's like, okay. So we can't just hang out and dude back in the day
there was like
So many spots throughout the years
They were cool. Like there was like ninth in commerce. It was downtown as well. Like or even further out. There was EOR for
Quite a long time. It seemed like that was a pretty sick meet and like that one was right next to
840 and I remember that was always
That was a hot one for sure everybody about their racing at that time
Yeah, then they did over there by the skate park too as well
In nashville and then just people started doing dumb stuff and they wouldn't let anybody do that over there either
Yeah, that that's things, you know, but
What are you gonna do? Right? Everything goes on. So
All right, so you've been a car guy. You started six years ago professionally detailing you what like
Dude, that's a jump. I don't remember where'd you work before?
So before that I was growing a hemp
Oh, yeah, that's really a CBD type thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that was uh,
Definitely not located here in Tennessee. So yeah, it was during that initial kind of wave of that thing that happening
And it just didn't didn't hit down there like it did in other places
but
So, I mean, I guess at that point you're kind of you know, that goes downhill and then you're kind of forced to either
Find some nine to five or just like, okay, everybody's asking me about my car
Who's cleaning it? I got these skills. I get it. You just did it jumped into it
Yeah, so I was working at the farm doing that and I had a lot of free time man
and I decided that I wanted to try to
Figure out something to make extra money without, you know
Having to get out here in mow lawns like everybody else
So I like vehicles and you know, I was like man
Let me try to figure something out. So I just uh started thinking about stuff and I was like man
People like how I clean their clean cars and stuff like that. So I'll just start doing that on the side
Then uh, I started making start doing it on the weekends just for hobby and stuff like that
I was like, man, I'm making more money on the weekends than I am
In my regular job. So I was just like, all right. Let's just go ahead and
Make a leap jump in so
That's dope. It starts out wash uh washing gloss and you're you're doing mobiles, right at first
Yep. Yep. I was doing mobiles and then uh
Saved up a little bit got a spot so I could start doing paint corrections and stuff and ceramic coating at a at a shop
um
and then
And then uh, my nephew came up to me and it was like, hey, let's uh, let's try something
I was like, what do you want to do? He goes, what do you think about trying to open up a detail supply store?
so
you ended up just
Figuring it out and open one up and it's about we've been running it for right now for about a year and three months
And it's been going pretty good so far
Dude. Oh, yeah
Oh, it's not working. Oh, no, your horns aren't working. Dang. I did an air horn there to celebrate
a year and a half
I don't know what happened there. That's weird
Um, so okay, cool. You open the detail department, which I've been to personally. Have you gotten to go in?
I have not had a chance. Yeah, it's it's dope. Like it's clean like
It definitely I'm like, yeah, dude. This is this is it right here
And and we'll have you walk us around before the end, but yeah, um, so
How like dude, that's a big jump like I'm like doing, you know, I got my spot
I'm you know busting out the corrections and like you said the the ceramics, but now I'm going to open a retail store
That's fully stocked branded and staffed
Dude, that's like dude a lot of guys listening to this
Would be like shitting their pants. They would like a lot of dudes would never make that jump
They would never say oh, we're gonna we're gonna just open this thing. We know some people want it
You know, we know we might be able to get some accounts
But we're gonna do it and like dude a year and a half dude. You're you're in there right now. That's sick. Congrats
Yes, sir. I appreciate it appreciate it
um
But dude that must like and so that's the thing right you're actually great proof right because you're a year and a half in
Right now like you're not just building out cars and like doing all this stuff, right?
You're like in the grind phase of the business, right? It's the ugly part
Nobody wants to talk about you know, we've been through it as well in a in a sense for sure
And it's it's not like kind of like I don't want to say celebrated
But it's not like recognized enough, right?
Like there is this time when damn right Sean wants an old school
You're damn right Sean wants a right hand drive, but right now Sean wants to succeed
And that's like, you know, that's the priority, right? That's buying that bigger man, you know, right exactly back in
Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I had to buy a new van not too long ago. So yeah and the priorities change a little bit, right?
Like, you know, where you where you were like, let's just say, you know, you were excited to build out this
You know sc 300 now you're like, okay, I'm gonna build out this van with this real in this
You know
It's like transfers dude. I feel the same way, you know
It's like damn am I getting old but no, it's like no man. It's just embrace from everything, you know
Yeah, for sure because you can't fight it because then things go south, you know, like oh, yeah
But dude, yeah, congrats on that and like
If you you know, just plug right here if you need any of the supplies that Sean carries
What where is it at over in merfer merfer's bar?
So it's in merfysboro, tennessee
906 ridgely road ridgely
And then we do have a website. Uh, it's the detail. I mean, it's detail depot d e p t dot us
That's cool. So
Um, you can order stuff on the website. Yes, you can order stuff online and it can be shipped directly to you
Damn, dude e-commerce. You're
So what brands do you carry?
So the brands that I carry I carry 3d, um products. It's a it's a company out of uh, detroit
um
They do they make some really killer products man. Um, and then another one is coach kimmy
Which is very popular. You're all around tick tock and stuff like that. You'll see it everywhere. A lot of people like it
It's a super concentrated
Um getting better bang for your buck and then we have another one called arcadia
which is uh
more of like your
Uh, commercial style washing and stuff like that
um, so
You get these products
These I I don't know anything about detailing. I know what I bought from you. I came in and I bought some stuff because you're like
You know, I know it's the coach kimmy or whatever, but like so these
These are like the
Are these the top of the line like the mid top like I know they're not the low
Obviously, you're not carrying nothing like that. But like yeah, so they're pretty much
You know up in the and they're top, you know top 10 good chemicals that people like to use and stuff like that
very popular
All over the world and stuff like that for sure. And so
This is something, you know, I kind of figured right but like never really thought of until we were standing at at the
In your store and you're like, no, you know, and you kind of explain this and so
It's now that I'm about to say it. I'm like, damn. It's pretty obvious these dudes are gonna be like, uh, you know, but like
You know the stuff that you're you can buy at walmart auto zone advanced, you know and harbor freight harbor freight
And you know, we don't get to go out there and just bash brands
But you know, you know, if it's on those shelves, it's probably in that lower category more watered down
So you're using more of it higher don't like not dosages, but higher, you know amounts that you use per, right? So
Whereas the chemicals that you're using they're more concentrated. They're higher quality. You don't need to use as much
You might spend a little more, right? But like
Over time when you're buying more and more of the auto zone stuff because it's so diluted you actually spend less
For sure
So yeah, so like a lot of the stuff that we have here like that's fully concentrated versus like auto zone
So yeah, you'll you'll get like into your cleaners that
You know, it might work, but it won't get that heavy grit out because it's not concentrated enough to uh to pull that grit
Or grind out of the vehicle
So we do have like stuff here that you can mix to your liking if you need it real strong for a heavy
Like a heavy traffic car that's super dirty
Or you can mix it real light for you know that
If you detail your car once a week where it's not that dirty, but you definitely want to wipe it down and stuff like that
So I've actually never actually stuff that we have is UV protected and stuff like that. So it helps out
Hmm. I do. I've actually never really thought about like you said like the interior cleaner is a higher concentration
Like there have been some spots in my car like on the armrest or whatever it is on my daily driver where like
Spray the stuff from Morales or auto zone, whatever
And no matter how much you scrub, there's still dirt there. Yeah, right? Whereas the products you're saying
Since they're more concentrated it'll pull the stuff out and you use less never thought about that
Oh, yeah, it's not the only one. Wow
Yeah, yeah, that's cool. Um
Yes, sir
so, okay
when you talk about like
You know cleaning your car, right? Okay. Well, first of all actually
Some guys may not understand they hear ceramic coating, right?
They they think it's a gimmick that sold at dealerships
Which I guess at dealerships it kind of is because they just use a spray application whatever, right?
But they just think it's like that, but there actually is a benefit
To ceramic coating your car. Can you just explain?
like
What the purpose is a little better?
Definitely. So like usually when you go like the dealerships and you you'll they say they got a coating for you
It's most likely perma plate
Uh perma plate is kind of like a ceramic coat, but it's not
Uh, it doesn't have any hydrophobics to it or anything like that
It doesn't help out with like your bug stains and stuff like that. They just just something that they help
It's just a uv protectant pretty much. That's it
um with ceramic coating, it's like
It's usually a lot of it comes in small bottles like this. Yeah, um, and
Everybody's like, why is it so small? You know, that doesn't cover anything. What it does is whenever you apply it to your vehicle
um
It usually sets up usually takes overnight for it to set up
And it's kind of like a hard shell like kind of like you like a jolly rancher
like kind of like a hard candy shell that adds to
your paint
to protect it from
bug stains water spots
Um, and it does have a uv protection in it too as well
Um and stuff like that. So I definitely helps out
But it doesn't help out with like rock chips or anything a lot of people will try to tell you
Oh, you know prevent rock chips. It will not prevent rock chips. Right. It's not like that. Right. No, it's not like that
It's not ppf
No
um for sure
And so also right like because you know, I've I had my I've had my vehicle ceramic coated
and the biggest thing that I notice in that sense is
The water like kind of sheds off from it like the shell is like has you know, like you said the coating
Has like that effect where what did you call it water phobic like hydrophobic
Yes, yeah, yeah, okay. Yeah, and that that makes washing it just so much easier
So much easier and these things lasted like these coatings last like what five years
Yeah, so you got different ones starting from one year to five year
They do have some that are like eight year, but I just don't get why you have one that long
Um any coating that you do too as well. I suggest doing maintenance on it making sure
Once a year that if you get it done by somebody just going back to that person that did it for you
And making sure that your coating is still
Active and stuff like that because sometimes you get applied to a panel and it can die off and stuff like that
So
Dang, okay. That's good to know. Have have the guy check it out. Just make sure it's still just make sure
Just do a maintenance wash make sure every panel still beating up nice and stuff like that
Uh within the lifespan of that coating that five-year coating that you got and stuff. So
Okay, that makes sense
um and so
What so do you do ppf?
So I do a little bit of ppf not a lot
Because i'm just so busy doing mobile
Um and doing what I like the best is doing paint corrections and ceramic coats
Because they kind of in and out a lot of these cars are really tricky with the ppf
As in applying it and stuff. So yeah in the corner. I haven't really had time to sit down and
Really lock it down because I've just been so busy with doing other stuff. I feel that the grind, right? Yeah
for sure
So if so, okay real quick
If you if your vehicle is ceramic coated can you like what's the best, you know
At home, what's the best process to wash the vehicle?
To your best at home process to wash the vehicle. I usually like whenever
Like for say I usually start off with the wheels. You'll do your washer wheels and stuff like that
And then whenever you get to the body, I usually like to do if you have bugs and stuff up front
Uh do your bug washing and stuff like do that a pre wash
And then you go into after you do your pre wash you do you go into your contact wash
And after your contact wash you do your drying and stuff like that
And the other reason why I tell people uh, it's good to do a pre wash before you do your contact wash
Is because you get to get all that grime and stuff down before you actually put a mitt on the vehicle
And so pre wash doesn't mean rinse. It means foam cannon
Yes, and so I usually get like a higher ph
Pre wash and stuff like that. You'll spray it on with a foam cannon. Let it dwell and then
Rinse it off and then you'll foam cannon is again with your
With your soap that you do your contact wash with
Okay, I get it. Oh and so when is like a rinse less wash appropriate?
So rinse is wash is appropriate. I think usually like whenever it has light dust
Uh
Or you know, it's been sitting outside. We'll not like sitting outside like if you say you went out
Um, and then you came back and then you did a waterless wash or something like that if you wash it before
It's fine. Um, if it I I don't like it
Sorry, oh, let me start over
It's usually best to do it if it has no dirt or anything like that on the vehicle
Um, usually if you have like a bunch of dirt and stuff on there, you could
Potentially scratch it trying to just waterless wash it versus you rinsing that dirt down
and then
I said yeah, like it's it's for super light like right like
My car is clean. Uh, I go drive it in town get some pizza come back
I got just that little bit of like that little tiny coating of just the road dust like you said for sure
That's when I can you know rinse this wash road dust and stuff like that or for say it's been sitting in the garage
Uh for a couple weeks and it's not like super thick dust on it
Um, and you can you could use it too as well, but if it's like it's been sitting there for months
You know, and then you're like, all right, let me just waterless wash it and go out
It's probably not a good idea because that thick dust has all kinds of stuff in it
Okay, cool. I feel that so
I
The detail is it detail department or depot?
Uh, the detail department. Okay, cool. I was just making sure I'm like, uh,
so
What like you you got one store and you got uh, what you got a one or two staff members
Yes, so we got two. We got a girl that works named Lindsay. She works on saturdays
Uh, we got another dude named tj. He comes in and fills in
And then uh, I got a co-owner and his name is Chandler. Yeah
That's cool. So
What's the that's where you're at? Where are you headed? Like what's the what's the plan with it?
Like you got e-commerce. You got brick and mortar. Like where where are we going next?
So we we've been tapping into, uh, commercial side of the things
We uh, we have bought a uh a delivery truck
And we have about 12
Contracts right now
Just going around delivering chemicals and stuff. Uh, yeah
Like the snap on truck but but like that stuff. Yeah. Yeah, that's pretty cool. Um, and so
I know at one point we talked about some like
Branding like your own, you know, your own
Products out of the detail department. Is that still on the on the table? Yeah, it's still on the table
We actually have some stuff that we we've uh that we've put out
Um right now we got like right here some detailing brushes
Yes, sir different types of detailing brushes and stuff like that
We got a wheel mitts so you can clean your wheels
Uh, and then we got our own drying towels and stuff too. So that's a big thing
Love the drying towels. They work out really well. I have to send you all some for sure
Yeah, for sure. We'll we'll wrap them. Yeah
Um
So that's cool. So you got your own branded stuff. You're you're gonna start getting the accounts, which I'm sure is nice
You got a guy that just you know, ideally you just have a guy that just drives around delivering. Yeah, that's me for right now
Yeah, but
Yeah
Yeah, um
And then
So and so you plan to keep doing your details as well
Uh, yeah, so I'm I'm to the point now where I'm probably gonna stop taking in new clients as in doing details and stuff like that
I got a pretty good clientele right now that I deal with
um on a on a weekly
bi-weekly and monthly basis that I really don't have to look look for like
New clients in that area, but I still do like doing a paint corrections and ceramic coats and stuff. So
I probably still be doing that a lot
Yeah, that's cool. I mean, yeah, if you enjoy it, right? Like it's worth continuing to do
And so I know you've I know from when we've talked you've gotten to do some pretty cool cars, you know, like
Like let the listeners in like what are some of your favorite details, you know coatings or whatever it was that you did
So far. Yeah, man. Uh, so
Not too long ago. I got to mess with um, uh, there's a there's a old school hot rod shop here in town named charlie's custom creations
I do a lot of work for them
um, I got to
Work on one of their show trucks that they've been working on it's an older c-10. It's like an 80s model c-10
It's actually brand new brand new chassis
Um, it's like on a road shop chassis like $25,000 chassis is crazy
Um, and then they bought like a brand new
So every every panel on the car was brand new. So it's a six figure c-10
Everything's brand new all the bolts nuts and bolts and everything. It has um, it's a
twin turbo manual
Truck, so it's just unreal. It made like 1,100 horsepower. So it was crazy
Got to
Got to wet sand and buff that thing. It was kind of nerve-wracking because you know, that's
Cars like that or like 40 50 thousand dollar paint jobs and stuff like that. There's a lot of people that won't
Want to touch a car like that because you know burning
Potentially burning a car like that can cost you a lot of money. Yeah. Yeah, don't burn that one, dude
The guy's about to bring it bring it out somewhere and like you just burn it right before whoo man. Yeah
So and
Cards like that, you know, they got a big car shows and stuff. So I definitely have to make sure I don't mess them up before
They make it to the show and stuff. So
That's cool. That's a heavy responsibility
Clearly you are good at your job or else people like that that
Invest that type of money in the vehicles wouldn't trust them in your hand. So for sure do props to you
yeah, and then uh
Another cool thing I like doing too as well as uh, mike doosan over there at exotic auto sports
Like going over there some times and doing some cleaning for them man because they always got some cool stuff over there
Always like a movie over there, man. Do you get me a car dude? I'll sleep there

About this episode
Shawn Charles from Washing Gloss Auto Spot joins Right Hand Drive Guys to talk detailing, from starting with mobile washing to moving into paint corrections and ceramic coating. The conversation covers product sourcing, why pro chemicals are more concentrated, and how ceramic coatings work (UV protection and hydrophobic water beading) without preventing rock chips like PPF. They also share a safe wash approach—foam-cannon pre-wash, contact washing, and why waterless methods can scratch when dust is heavy—plus how the shop is growing into retail and commercial work.
In this episode of the Right Hand Drive Guys Podcast, we sit down with Sean from The Detail Dept to talk all things detailing and car care. From daily drivers to high-end builds, Sean shares what it really takes to keep your car looking its best — inside and out.
We dive into his background, the types of cars he’s into, and some of the wild builds and rare cars he’s had the chance to work on. He also drops practical tips on maintenance, paint care, and what most owners get wrong when it comes to keeping their cars clean.
Whether you’re maintaining a show car or just trying to protect your investment, this episode brings real insight from someone who lives it every day.
