About this episode

Shawn Charles from Washing Gloss Auto Spot joins Right Hand Drive Guys to talk detailing, from starting with mobile washing to moving into paint corrections and ceramic coating. The conversation covers product sourcing, why pro chemicals are more concentrated, and how ceramic coatings work (UV protection and hydrophobic water beading) without preventing rock chips like PPF. They also share a safe wash approach—foam-cannon pre-wash, contact washing, and why waterless methods can scratch when dust is heavy—plus how the shop is growing into retail and commercial work.

Buick Grand National

"... so One day I'll have a domestic definitely won a Grand National, but that's Definitely what like black, right? Oh..."

The Buick Grand National is a performance car made by Buick. It’s known for having a turbo engine, and it’s often associated with a black exterior. People talk about it because it’s a well-known model for fast, turbocharged driving.

Term

2J swap

"Yeah, I had a sd300 with a usdm 2j swap Damn with a v1 66 speed. I had that"

A “2J swap” means installing a Toyota 2JZ engine into a different car than it originally came with. It’s a common enthusiast engine swap because the 2JZ is known for strong aftermarket support and the ability to handle big power when built correctly.

Term

USDM

"Yeah, I had a sd300 with a usdm 2j swap Damn with a v1 66 speed. I had that"

USDM means U.S.-spec parts. When people say “USDM” in a swap, they usually mean the engine is from the version sold for the U.S., which can affect wiring and setup.

Term

sleeper

"It was like sleeper in the sense of nobody would think that you literally had the super drivetrain In that car obviously it's a known thing"

A “sleeper” is a car that doesn’t look fast, but is actually very quick. It’s the “looks normal, but performs hard” kind of build.

Term

single

"Yeah, it was a dark green. Yep, dude. It had it. Did it did it have a big single?"

A “big single” usually means one large turbocharger instead of two. That can affect how quickly the car boosts and where it feels strongest.

Term

mobiles

"It starts out wash uh washing gloss and you're you're doing mobiles, right at first Yep. Yep. I was doing mobiles and then uh"

Mobile detailing is when the detailer comes to you. Instead of driving to a shop, they wash and clean your car at your home or workplace.

Term

washing gloss

"It starts out wash uh washing gloss and you're you're doing mobiles, right at first Yep. Yep. I was doing mobiles and then uh"

“Washing gloss” means washing in a way that keeps your paint looking shiny. Detailers try to clean without scratching, so the car doesn’t lose its shine.

Term

paint corrections

"Saved up a little bit got a spot so I could start doing paint corrections and stuff and ceramic coating at a at a shop"

Paint correction is when a detailer polishes your car’s paint to remove scuffs and swirl marks. It makes the paint look smoother and shinier without needing a new paint job.

Term

UV protected

"So I've actually never actually stuff that we have is UV protected and stuff like that. So it helps out"

UV protection refers to additives in a product that help reduce damage from ultraviolet light, which can fade and degrade interior and exterior materials over time. In detailing, UV-protectant ingredients are commonly used on trim, plastics, and interior surfaces.

Brand

perma plate

"it’s most likely perma plate Uh perma plate is kind of like a ceramic coat, but it's not... it doesn't have any hydrophobics to it or anything like that"

Perma Plate is a coating product some dealerships offer. In this conversation, they’re saying it’s similar to ceramic coating, but it doesn’t work the same way with water.

Term

hydrophobics

"Uh, it doesn't have any hydrophobics to it or anything like that"

Hydrophobic means “water-repelling.” If a coating has that property, water doesn’t stick as much, so it beads and rinses off easier.

Term

UV protectant

"It's just a uv protectant pretty much. That's it [1011.1s] um with ceramic coating, it's like [1014.4s] It's usually a lot of it comes in small bottles like this."

A UV protectant is a product ingredient or additive designed to reduce damage from ultraviolet sunlight. On car paint, UV exposure can contribute to fading and degradation over time. Ceramic coatings and similar sealants may include UV protection as part of their overall protection package.

Term

ceramic coating

"um with ceramic coating, it's like [1014.4s] It's usually a lot of it comes in small bottles like this. Yeah, um, and [1019.9s] Everybody's like, why is it so small? You know, that doesn't cover anything."

Ceramic coating is a protective layer you put on your car’s paint. After it cures, it forms a slick “shell” that helps dirt and water slide off more easily. It helps with stains and water spots, but it won’t stop rock chips the way tougher protection would.

Term

rock chips

"But it doesn't help out with like rock chips or anything a lot of people will try to tell you [1055.1s] Oh, you know prevent rock chips. It will not prevent rock chips. Right. It's not like that."

Rock chips are little spots where small stones hit your car and damage the paint. They can start as tiny marks but may get worse over time. The point here is that ceramic coating helps with stains and water, but it won’t stop rocks from chipping the paint.

Term

maintenance wash

"Just do a maintenance wash make sure every panel still beating up nice and stuff like that"

A maintenance wash is your regular, careful car wash meant to keep the protective layer working. The goal is to clean without harming the coating.

Term

PPF

"What so do you do ppf? So I do a little bit of ppf not a lot"

PPF is a clear protective film that you stick onto your car’s paint. It helps protect against rock chips and small scratches, but it can be hard to apply neatly on complex body panels.

Term

ceramic coats

"Um and doing what I like the best is doing paint corrections and ceramic coats Because they kind of in and out a lot of these cars are really tricky with the ppf"

A ceramic coat is a protective layer you put on your car’s paint. It helps water and dirt slide off more easily, but you still need to wash it the right way to keep it looking good.

Term

wheels

"Like for say I usually start off with the wheels. You'll do your washer wheels and stuff like that"

Wheels collect brake dust and grime that can be harder to remove. Cleaning them first helps keep that dirt from getting onto the rest of the car.

Term

pre wash

"Uh do your bug washing and stuff like do that a pre wash And then you go into after you do your pre wash you do you go into your contact wash"

A pre wash is the first step before you scrub or wipe the car. You spray off the loose dirt first so you’re less likely to scratch the paint when you start washing by hand.

Term

contact wash

"And then you go into after you do your pre wash you do you go into your contact wash And after your contact wash you do your drying and stuff like that"

A contact wash is when you actually wash the car by hand with a mitt or brush. Since you’re touching the paint, it’s best to remove loose dirt first so you don’t grind grit into the finish.

Term

foam cannon

"pre wash doesn't mean rinse. It means foam cannon Yes, and so I usually get like a higher ph Pre wash and stuff like that. You'll spray it on with a foam cannon. Let it dwell and then Rinse it off"

A foam cannon is a tool that sprays soapy foam onto your car. The foam helps loosen dirt and lets you rinse it off before you start scrubbing with a mitt.

Term

higher ph

"Yes, and so I usually get like a higher ph Pre wash and stuff like that. You'll spray it on with a foam cannon."

pH is a measure of how strong/acidic or how alkaline a cleaner is. A “higher pH” cleaner is often chosen to help lift tough grime before you touch the paint.

Term

dwell

"You'll spray it on with a foam cannon. Let it dwell and then Rinse it off and then you'll foam cannon is again with your"

Dwell time is how long you let the cleaner sit on the car before rinsing it off. Letting it sit helps the soap loosen dirt so you don’t have to scrub as hard.

Term

rinse less wash

"Okay, I get it. Oh and so when is like a rinse less wash appropriate? So rinse is wash is appropriate. I think usually like whenever it has light dust"

A rinse-less wash (often discussed alongside waterless washing) is a method where you clean the car with minimal or no rinsing. It’s generally intended for light contamination like dust, because the product’s lubricity and chemistry can’t safely handle heavy grit the way a full pre-wash + rinse can.

Term

waterless wash

"Um, and then you came back and then you did a waterless wash or something like that if you wash it before It's fine. Um, if it I I don't like it"

A waterless wash is cleaning the car without rinsing it with lots of water. It works best when the car is only lightly dusty—if there’s real dirt on it, wiping can cause scratches.

Term

detailing brushes

"Um right now we got like right here some detailing brushes [1447.9s] Yes, sir different types of detailing brushes and stuff like that"

Detailing brushes are small, purpose-made brushes for cleaning hard-to-reach spots on a car. They help you get dirt out of grooves and tight areas without rubbing it in or damaging the surface.

Term

wheel mitts

"We got a wheel mitts so you can clean your wheels [1455.4s] Uh, and then we got our own drying towels and stuff too."

Wheel mitts are special cleaning gloves for your wheels. They’re meant to deal with tough brake dust so you don’t spread it onto the rest of the car.

Term

drying towels

"Uh, and then we got our own drying towels and stuff too. So that's a big thing [1459.6s] Love the drying towels. They work out really well."

Drying towels are towels made to dry your car safely after a wash. Good ones help prevent streaks, water spots, and accidental scratches.

Car

Chevrolet C10

"um, I got to Work on one of their show trucks that they've been working on it's an older c-10. It's like an 80s model c-10 It's actually brand new brand new chassis"

The Chevrolet C10 is a pickup truck, usually from the older classic era. In the podcast, they’re working on one that’s been built as a show truck, including a brand-new chassis underneath. That means it can keep the classic look while being safer and more modern to drive.

Term

twin turbo

"It has um, it's a twin turbo manual Truck, so it's just unreal."

“Twin turbo” means the engine has two turbochargers. They cram more air into the engine, which helps it make a lot more power.

Term

manual

"It has um, it's a twin turbo manual Truck, so it's just unreal."

“Manual” means you shift gears yourself using a clutch pedal and a stick. It can feel more connected to the car, especially on a powerful custom truck.

Term

wet sand and buff

"Got to wet sand and buff that thing. It was kind of nerve-wracking because you know, that's Cars like that or like 40 50 thousand dollar paint jobs and stuff like that."

Wet sanding is a careful process of smoothing paint imperfections using water and sandpaper. Buffing then polishes the paint so it looks shiny again.

Concept

burning a car

"There's a lot of people that won't Want to touch a car like that because you know burning Potentially burning a car like that can cost you a lot of money."

“Burning” the car here means you can accidentally damage the paint while polishing it. If you mess it up, fixing it can cost a lot because the paint is so expensive.
