Now, we'll start with some news of a global rollout
initially targeting Europe of the new Leap Motor B10.
Leap Motor is launching the B10 in Europe
on the Leap 3.5 platform.
The B10 will debut at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich.
That'll be on September the 8th.
European deliveries will begin around the same time.
Now Leap Motor used a, what they say,
global standards plus local optimization strategy.
Okay, what is a global standards
plus local optimization strategy?
So the B10 meets the rules for 53 countries and regions
while features and performance
are then adjusted for each market.
Leap Motor and Stellantis engineers
have been working together to improve the B10 chassis
with advanced driving simulators
to match the handling and dynamics preferred
by local buyers in Europe.
This SUV will enter more than 20 new markets this year,
including the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific
and South America.
Europe is Leap Motor's main focus though
where the B10 will be priced at 29.9,
so a smidge under 30,000 euros.
Okay, let's move on and talk about the Tesla Model S,
the original Tesla here in Europe and,
well, is it coming back?
Recent documents, regulatory documents show Tesla
has updated the Model S in Europe.
It's the 2026 model year,
if you wanna apply model years to Tesla.
This follows last month's removal.
So last month, both the Model S and the Model X
were removed from the European websites
that had raised questions about their future.
Even in the United Kingdom,
we could only get it in left-hand drive version.
Anyway, now the filings dated July 18th,
note the updated suspension parts,
the front facia camera, changes to the statutory plates
and VIN details, the new top speed.
So this is the refreshed Model S, long range,
WLTP 462 miles or 744 kilometers
on the European mainland, that's on the 19 inch wheels.
Model S Plaid is quite a chunk down,
actually 380 miles or 611 kilometers,
but it does run on 21s.
The new version is actually a little bit lighter.
It's a smidge lighter, three kilograms, 6.6 pounds lighter.
And one Plaid variant is no longer listed
showing that Tesla might be streamlining the lineup.
No changes were found for the Model X though.
Tesla released the refreshed Model S and X
in the United States.
In June, earlier this month,
Tesla raised the US prices by $10,000
for all S's and X's.
New US orders now come with the Luxe package
that includes full self-driving
and unlimited supercharging all bundled in.
Now, let's talk about a record breaking
Mercedes-AMG GT Double X.
It's a concept vehicle
and it just set many new world records for EV distance
including the 24 hour driving record.
In 24 hours, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Double X
covered 3,405 miles in a 24 hour period.
That's five and a half thousand kilometers in 24 hours.
And it doesn't just beat
the previous 24 hour distance record.
It smashes the 24 hour distance record
by an EV by about 1,000 miles.
The car ran at a steady 186 miles an hour
and it can recharge at 850 kilowatt DC fast charging.
In total, the driving was done by 17 drivers
taking turns every two hours over almost eight days.
They did a distance equal to the Earth's circumference
by 25,000 miles and just crazy amount of driving.
Two of the cars, the GT Double X cars
completed the main challenge.
They finished two laps apart.
The team drove on until the cars reached 25,000 miles
or 40,000 kilometers setting a new best time
to drive around the world as it were
of seven days, 14 hours, nine minutes and 52 seconds.
In total, the team doing this
used their new concept Mercedes-Benz
to break 25 records in total
including the longest distance driven in 12 hours,
24 hours, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 and 168 hours.
They use batteries with over 3,000
of a new cylindrical type NCMA,
Nickel Cobalt Manganese Aluminium Cells,
very high energy density, about 300 watt hours per kilogram.
Each cell is cooled by a non-conductive oil system.
Mercedes-AMG says the car can add about 248 miles
of range in five minutes of charging
and Mercedes-Benz I think are completely
on a roll at the moment.
I think actually some of the technology coming out
of Mercedes-Benz out of BMW with Neue Classe,
no doubt Volkswagen have loads coming down the line
as well with new platforms,
that new software with Rivian as well.
There was probably a time, there still is a time
by the way, when the Chinese speed technology,
just sheer amount of brain power
of manpower and woman power
that they were able to put behind developing vehicles
and how they could do it.
I think the Chinese cars got tons of headlines
and we'll get to one at the end of this podcast today
with the Yang Wang.
I think we're seeing a bit of a reply
by the European car makers at the very bleeding edge,
the very cutting edge of things like technology
and records and stuff like that.
And Tesla had that for a long time.
I think the Chinese dominated that kind of headline cycle
apart from maybe kind of rimats.
But that is kind of moved,
the swing is back towards Europe a little more.
And so really interesting to see
how far EV technology is being pushed.
All right, let's move on.
Let's talk about a great bit of news from our US listeners.
The IRS has extended the deadline
for claiming the federal tax credit for new vehicles,
$4,000 for used EVs.
It was, if you've been listening recently,
I've been reminding everybody,
if you're buying an EV in the US,
if you are financing, you're getting electric vehicle,
you must do it by September 30th,
the car must be in your driveway, so to speak.
In other words, by the close of business on the 30th,
paperwork done, it's gotta be a done deal.
Now, as of today, the IRS just made some updates
and changes, which I think you'll wanna know about.
So the IRS says you can still quantify
if you sign a written binding contract
and pay a deposit on or before September 30th,
even if you don't receive the car.
Now, if you're definitely gonna buy an EV,
I probably wouldn't leave it until the final day,
final hour kind of thing,
because you're leaving yourself open for,
you know, just mistakes and things in the system,
but this is great.
So to qualify, you need a binding contract,
not a reservation, not a refundable $100.
I might like that car kind of thing.
It has to be a binding contract.
You must make the payment by the deadline.
There is no longer any set time
for claiming the tax credit after September 30th.
So what does this mean?
I've seen loads of coverage today from all around.
I think this is probably best news for Tesla,
I would say, because they had already said
that on some of their specifications,
of some of their models,
they were unable to guarantee September 30th delivery.
I think perhaps it's less good news
for some of the car makers who had dealer stock
they were trying to clear,
because just the different ways of them selling cars,
those that have a dealer model,
those cars have been sitting on dealer lots.
That urgency around the tax deadline
was forcing people to go and get those cars
and clear out dealer stock,
ready for the new model year.
It was a good thing, a positive thing.
It's not positive that it's going,
don't get me wrong, but it was a good thing.
Whereas Tesla were saying,
well, you kind of missed the boat on some of our models.
Now, right up until the deadline,
I think perhaps Tesla probably benefits more than others,
they could say, right, well,
the wait list might be six months
for this most popular trim of the Model Y,
but as long as you put down your non-refundable deposit,
you have a binding contract that you will buy the car,
there's now no pressure
to have that car delivered by September 30th.
So I think really great news there.
I wish the tax credit was sticking around,
but a nice bit of good news for my US listeners.
Now, let's talk about MG, a car that I've owned,
a car that my mom owned.
She has the estate.
I had the MG ZS EV, the mighty, mighty MG ZS.
It was the original one as well before the facelift.
We really enjoyed that car.
MG, which is apparently owned by SAIC parent company,
say they will launch 13 new vehicles worldwide
and their new EVs as well in the next two years,
13 worldwide models in two years.
The company's investing $1.4 billion in new models,
which will include battery electric vehicles
and plug-in hybrids and E-revs.
And although the definition around E-rev is somewhat woolly
because there's various powertrains kicking around,
largely I think the industry has settled
on the E-rev definition being a vehicle
which has typically a larger battery
than a plug-in hybrid,
but also only has electric power to the wheels.
And so it has an engine, you can put fuel in it,
you can charge the battery,
it has a plug circuit on the side.
Typically, it's electric motors that drive the wheels.
The engine is just a generator to make electricity.
Now there are some like the BYD Shark,
the Shark 6 in Australia,
that's the pickup truck for ute that can,
at highway speeds, hasn't got a gearbox,
typical multi-speed gears,
but it can drive the wheels through the engine
above something like 50 or 60 kph.
And so is it a plug-in hybrid?
Is it an E-rev?
But I think largely that's how we define E-rev these days
and plug-in hybrid, you know what one of those is.
Now from January to July this year,
MG delivered 57,000 vehicles in China.
Low demand in China is linked to MG's limited lineup.
The 13 new models will address this.
MG officials say they will promote
advanced vehicle connectivity through a partnership with OPPO
and will use new semi-solid state batteries in the MG4.
The first one to get it,
MG started pre-sales in China on August 5th
with the official launch set for August 29th
in two days time.
A version of the MG4 with a semi-solid state battery
will be released before the end of the year.
Standard MG4 starts at around $10,000 US dollars equivalent
in China.
Now, lots more to discuss on the podcast today.
We've got some more China news to bring you very soon.
Also, Hyundai, Kia and the Koreans fighting back,
Italy finding one of their electricity providers
and the new Toyota CHR EV has been spotted
in China.
Let's stick around back in a moment.

All right, welcome back to the podcast.
Okay, let's carry on with the news
and we'll talk about how the Chinese EV market
for plug-in hybrids slowing down a little bit actually.
In July, China's EV market grew,
selling nearly 1 million plug-in vehicles
out of 1.8 million, a 6% increase over last year.
Battery electric vehicles were up 26%
making over a third of all sales.
Plug-in hybrids though fell 10% from last year.
Together, plug-ins were well over 50%
once again in July in China.
They have gone past that tipping point.
The 10% drop in plug-in hybrids
is the first year-over-year decline
for plug-in hybrids in China.
They're very much leaning towards full bevs.
And there's a bit of excitement
about around E-revs as well,
which we have talked about plenty already on today's
podcast, Geely's new Galaxy M9.
That's a big SUV.
That's a proper big family-sized SUV.
That got over 40,000 pre-sale orders
in its first 24 hours this week
when it went on sale three days ago.
Six versions which start at $27,000 US dollars equivalent
but got to $36,000 US dollars equivalent.
It's the largest model in the Galaxy lineup.
It's a six-seat layout.
It does come with a range extender as well.
They've got all sorts of funky features
like a roof-mounted LiDAR.
It's about the same size as a Mercedes-Benz GLS
if you need a reference points,
a comparison point of something
that you may have seen on the road.
So yeah, a GLS, a big vehicle in my eyes at least.
Three rows, two plus, two plus, two.
All six seats being Chinese.
It's just like full of luxury and stuff.
So individually power adjustable,
all individually heated.
The first two rows have ventilation and massage as well.
For the e-rev version, you get the engine
plus three electric motors, 870 horsepower,
all-wheel drive, 4.5 seconds.
These things are like really fast, really well-spec'd
and you can get a battery pack that's 41.5 kilowatt hours
twice the size of the battery in my first EV
which is incredible, 130 miles of range.
And look, these vehicles start at 27 grand in China.
It's just crazy when they choose to sell these vehicles
outside of China.
And this one's a big, big family SUV.
It's just, I'm not surprised people go for the value there.
Okay, let's talk a little bit now
about Hyundai, Kia and the South Koreans.
So the battery makers, LG, Samsung and SK
plus the car makers, Hyundai, Kia
have all agreed to partner up
to work on things like EV battery safety,
develop new technologies and share patents.
Over the past year, these five companies have collabed
on things like battery safety task forces.
That's been established at Hyundai and Kia's headquarters.
They recently disclosed the first results of this initiative
and formalized their ongoing partnership
all about fighting back against the Chinese power really
in terms of the battery industry
and doing a kind of a fight back from South Korea.
Voltfang is launching Europe's largest
used battery storage site.
Voltfang has opened what it calls Europe's largest factory
for reusing batteries in Arkham.
Production started in April
in the former building of the old EV maker at Next Ego.
Next Ego?
Anyway, I hadn't heard of them, but they went bankrupt.
The fast growing company plans to produce
250 megawatt hours of storage a year
by the end of next year.
The factory reuses batteries from EVs
and extra batteries from the car industry in Europe.
There's two ways of doing it, I guess.
You do it the way of, well, let's recycle
all of the component parts of the batteries,
which is the way some are doing it and recycling.
Others like Voltfang are just taking the batteries
and reusing them in their form,
which some say is a better way to recycle old batteries
or repurpose old batteries as well.
These energy storage systems store renewable power,
balance out demand peaks
and provide backup in emergencies.
Voltfang says this will boost energy security
and reduce dependence on foreign supply chains as well.
All right, Italy is next in the news
and Italy's antitrust authority, the AGCM,
just fined their energy company, NLX,
and its subsidiary, NLX Way, Italia,
2.3 million euros for abusing their dominant position
in the EV charging market.
The investigation, which was started two years ago,
found that NL, Italy's largest energy supplier,
used their power, margin-squeezing practices
is what it was described as
to keep competitors out of the market.
They said that NL's actions between 2022 and 2023
reduced competition and slowed
the mobility service development, NLX and NLX Way, Italia,
said that they accept the regulator's decision
but disagree with the findings
and they will be appealing.
They argued that the authorities
didn't fully consider how the new market is
or unexpected jumps in electricity prices during that time.
NLX and NLX Way, Italia also said
they still believe their actions were legal
and they said they will defend themselves.
Okay, moving on, the 2026 Toyota CHR,
the all-electric compact SUV has been spotted in Texas,
Austin, actually, Austin, Texas,
being filmed for a commercial
in preparation for their US launch.
It made its global debut recently
alongside other Toyota EVs for Europe.
The US version looks similar to the EU model.
The new CHR used those Toyota's latest design features
and that kind of famous Toyota front-end
seen on the new Corolla.
It's smaller than the BZ, formerly BZ4X,
although in Europe they still called it the BZ4X.
Smaller than that, similar to a Kia Nero EV.
Toyota will offer the CHR with four powertrain options,
all-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell.
That's Toyota, still flogging that dead horse.
The all-electric version will have a 74.7 kilowatt hour
battery and a range of 290 miles estimated.
All-wheel drive from electric motors
on both front and rear, axles.
Of course, it'll come with J3400,
native Nax on the side
so you can charge at Tesla Supercharger stations.
All right, two more stories.
China is launching a 100 megawatt heavy-duty
truck charging hub.
China's first scale of 100 megawatt charging.
Now in operation in the Sichuan province,
the station uses Huawei's technology.
So Huawei's megawatt supercharging technology.
It's a demo for charging medium
and short-range electric heavy trucks.
Its main uses are trucks transporting sand
gravel from local mines,
built by the Sichuan Digital Energy Company.
They spend 20 million US dollars equivalent on this,
a power capacity of 100 megawatts,
so 18 supercharging bays for trucks.
So 18 bays at 1.44 megawatts each.
It's not bad, is it?
And another 108 bays,
which just offer a mere 600 kilowatts.
600 kilowatts who could possibly charge so slowly.
The station can charge up to 700 heavy-duty trucks per day.
The site also has a solar array
with a one megawatt capacity.
With Huawei's technology,
the station supports 3.5C supercharging
heavy-duty trucks, which is brilliant.
And finally, staying in China
and some of the technology,
BYD's hypercar, the Yang Wang U9,
just went on a high-speed run
and they claim they say 293.59,
don't forget the point, miles per hour.
That is 472.41 kilometers per hour.
BYD says they've made the world's fastest electric vehicle.
That is 20% faster
than its own previous Chinese record set last November.
The Yang Wang U9 is now the fastest EV in China
and among the quickest hypercars in the world
for comparison, there's a Koenigsegg
that will do 330 miles an hour.
I think the Bugatti Chiron Supersport,
that'll do 304 miles an hour.
But that is up there at rarefied territory.
When you get to 300 miles an hour
and engineering-wise you might be able to do it,
but engineering where the rubber meets the road
and to ensure the tires don't fall apart.
You start to get to the limits of tire technology then.
There's also a big price gap though.
Those hypercars I just mentioned would be, you know,
one point, I mean, pick a price,
one and a half million dollars
and upwards three, four million for hypercars.
The Yang Wang U9 is 230,000 US dollars equivalent.
So okay, you and I might not be able to go out
and get one tomorrow,
but it's not a Bugatti Chiron Supersport, is it?
Or a Koenigsegg.
The first Yang Wang U9 was delivered
in August last year.
They've done about 150 of them so far.
That's really impressive.
