that when there was a bit of chaos
going on the radio with GP
pressing the wrong button,
which we'll talk about later,
Max didn't get stressed about that.
It was just like, I can hear you, mate.

yeah, we saw him have an optimistic move on Lewis,
which was shades of old Max.
But I actually, I don't think that was a bad move
in any way, shape or form.
I just think it was ballsy.
And again, I don't mind that.
It's hard to overtake
me on Mexico,
so I'm not going to sit here
and say shouldn't have done that.
I thought he saw a generally
composed Max Verstappen
and they made the one stop work
where everybody else around them
made the two stop work.
And it's another one.
I'd never write off Max Verstappen
because I'm sat there
on that 40 odd or whatever it was
thinking what are they doing?
When are they going to pit him?
This is just not going to work
and credit to the Red Bull strategy team,
Hannah Schmidt and all the team at Red Bull.
Masterstroke of strategy.
It worked.
It keeps Max in contention just.
And of course, if you want anyone
to execute it, it's going to be Max.
We're in a position at the moment
where I don't think anyone's got a car
that's going to like win five, six races in a row.
Red Bull have made the car better,
but it probably didn't quite suit him.
It clearly Mexico right from the off
all weekend you looked at it
thought they're not quite as comfortable here.
They've not quite got the advantage
they had saying in Italy
and Baku in Austin.
So yeah, it wasn't a win,
but it was still impressive from Red Bull.
It was still impressive for Max.
It was indeed, right.
So, Christian, four races, two sprints.
One point between Lando and Oscar.
Max is 39 points behind.
He's still in this title race, isn't he?
Yeah, he is because you can get 25 points for win.
I think I actually think
it's massively significant this race
for the title, but actually everything
I said in the preview show
when we were having this chat with Alex.
I actually stand by everything I said.
I said, if you were going to push me
for somebody to win it,
I would say Lando, I still do.
Alex Jake said it needs something to happen
to what to the McLaren boys
for Max to be properly in it.
Yeah, that's still the case.
That what was it, 30 something out
that you said at the top of the show.
I forgot.

Yeah, you know,
it still needs a similar Austin Sprints
thing to happen for Max to truly be in it.
Never write Max for step on off.
It's probably Lando vs Oscar,
but all I would say is
four races, you know,
look at what I said about Oscar's end to the race.
Don't write Oscar off.
I think what I've been guilty of this season,
what everyone's guilty of in F1 this season
is you think just because a pattern happens,
you think that pattern is going to stay,
Oscar just looked like he was never going to stop
winning in the middle of the season,
and he has.
So really encouraging end to the race
for Oscar Piazza Street after an awful weekend pace wise,
it's really far from beyond the realms of possibility
that he turns up in Brazil and looks good.
All of a sudden Lando pulls out this win.
Oscar does the same,
and all of a sudden with three races
to go after an Oscar win, it looks great for Oscar again.
It's far from over.
You know, I don't think don't think we're just going to get
a procession for Lando.
I think it's so bloody exciting.
It's so exciting.
Oh, it's a fantastic championship battle.
It really is.
And also.
We've got two brilliant tracks coming up.
Brazil is a corker of a race track
or usually throws up a brilliant Grand Prix.
Vegas, we've only had two of them.
You've got the unusual factor that it's so bloody cold there
that it is possible to overtake on this unique circuit.
Katar's a bit meh,
but Abu Dhabi have improved recently as well.
So oh, it's could be especially these next two races
could be a lot of fun, could be a lot of fun.
Also, like it's they're basically level at the moment.
They're basically level.
So anything can happen.
Lando's got the momentum.
I think you could argue he's got the confidence.
Well, he does momentum.
But that swings.
That baby goes back and forth so quickly.
So, yeah, I think we're set for a very good one.
Should we talk about Ferrari?
I'd like to, actually.
And they look so much better
after the last couple of races, don't they?
Charles Leclerc was he was also brilliant was.
I mean, we're saying everyone's brilliant.
Lewis had a bad race.
I'd say it was ruined by that 10 second penalty.
So shall we start there probably
because I can't help but look at that and just think.
Oh, my God, that was so harsh.
I right.
So so obviously you've got into turn one.
Luis got a great start.
Point himself where you'd want him to put it.
Charles runs wide.
And the race directors rightly or wrongly,
I should say the race stewards, I should say, do tend to give you
less of a hard time if you do that on turn one
because it's turn one fair enough.
I said last weekend in Austin a couple of times,
I am on the side of sympathy in turn one.
So I sort of think, yeah,
I think I've probably got that right on balance.
In terms of that,
I think it would have been harsh to punish Leclerc on balance.
But, you know, there'll be people who disagree with that
and I can't really.
Yeah, because a lot of people are saying how's that fair.
Strictly Hamilton being punished, but Leclerc hasn't.
Which is then really tricky one.
So so according to,
I watched the Sky Sports commentary feed,
according to Crofty and Karoon,
Luis was punished,
not for going off the racetrack.
Alas, Charles Leclerc.
But for not taking the escape road.
The escape road is so thin.
Max has come from so far back.
That's I think that's really harsh on Luis
to expect him to be able to get the car
into the escape road.
When he's shedding off the speed
in such a short space of time,
when it's so tight,
I think that is a very harsh penalty.
Now, flip that,
the rules on overtaking are
that you are supposed to have your,
let me get this right,
you're supposed to be alongside the driver's,
the driver's wing mirror.
That you're supposed to have,
I think it's your helmet alongside the wing mirror.
Which Max was?
It was late, but Max had that.
I'm satisfied with that.
The rules also said that you're supposed
to be fully in control.
And I think you could maybe argue
that Max had locked up
and wasn't quite fully in control.
Now, I'm not saying Max should have had a penalty.
I don't think he should.
I said I love that he had a go.
I love that it was gutsy, bold overtaking.
We should be encouraging that.
I just think it would have been really harsh
to have given Max a penalty.
They didn't, fine.
I think it's really harsh
to have given Lewis a penalty.
I want us to be in a position in Formula One
where we're giving penalties
if it's screaming penalty.
And actually I think the FIA got term one right.
It's again going into VAR in football
where it's the clear and obvious error
where only re-referee the game
if we absolutely have to.
I sort of want it to be the case with Formula One.
So I think it's really, really harsh
on Lewis full stop,
but particularly harsh as I suspected
have been on the podium without that.
He would have had a completely different race.
His race would have been totally different.
That top four, five would be totally different.
It's so annoying.
It's hard, right?
It's hard.
The FIA have got a tricky job in that situation.
It's hard.
I think they should have let them race.
I didn't want to see penalties given out
and either ones there.
Where they got it wrong today, the FIA.
I wasn't on the track, obviously.
But again, we have to go on that.
Us at home, we have to go on the commentators
who have better angles and more screens than us.
David Croft and Korean Chanda were adamant
that Carlos Sainte's car was out of the road.
This **** me off.
Sorry, this was awful.
No, I ruined, I loved that race.
But the ending ruined it for me.
That stupid, stupid virtual safety car
did not need to happen.
And I've been said on this podcast
we should be cautious with safety.
It didn't seem to me that we needed that.
So now I agree with you there, Betty.
There were so many battles unfolding on track.
That could have been cinematic.
We were in for a fantastic last section of that race.
It was going to be so good.
And they were just overly cautious.
I think they were.
I think they were.
And obviously it stopped, you know,
Max potentially taking another step forward
in the championship by getting charled.
It was just great racing.
I think Oscar could be annoyed by that.
Yeah, it was just great racing.
So that's a shame.
The one thing I would say to go back onto the positive.
No, there's no positives.
It's all negative.
No, there is a positive for Lewis.
There was a good job.
Good job.

The positives I would take for Lewis Hamilton is
as Ferrari's competitiveness has improved this season.
Lewis Hamilton has been right up there.
And actually at some points this weekend
looked the more competitive Ferrari.
It was damn close between him and Leclerc.
And I suspect, I mean, it's all but some maybes.
I suspect without that penalty would have had
his first Ferrari podium.
In reality, of course, he wants the monkey off his back
in the sense of the record of the Ferrari driver
with the longest podium, of course he does.
But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter.
What we're looking for for Lewis is next year,
I should say.
What we're looking for for Lewis is next year,
where of course, as we've said all season,
the advantage that Charles learned this car
for many years goes.
We're seeing that as Ferrari gets more competitive,
Lewis Hamilton gets more competitive
and that is optimistic going into next season.
Because this is a man who probably isn't still
at his very peak in terms of how he was when he was 33, 34,
you know, battling for championships.
But if he can be up there
with Charles Leclerc next year,
who is this massive talent
who we know is capable of fighting for a championship.
That bodes very well for Lewis in his 40s.
So, there are positives just like there were from Austin.
There are positives to take from Lewis Hamilton.
I think he can crash himself as unlucky today.
Oh, so unlucky.
So harsh.

was absolutely brilliant and also shout out to his dad who was an absolute nervous
right oh you could see the tension in him on these pictures unbelievable oh you
could just feel the emotion through his dad I just absolutely loved it and we're
gonna get on to radio radar in a moment but also and just shout out to Ollie
bearman on the radio when he realized he got p4 and he basically just screamed
down he was just so happy and also bear in mind Ollie did our show when we were
on the stage when we did our Silverstone preview show on the stage Ollie's dad came
to watch like he's still so proud of his son that being on the main stage at
Silverstone despite the fact his son's racing in Grand Prix being on this
stupid podcast is the least thing he should be proud about but that's the
level yeah but that's the level of proudness that bear dad's got where
he's even coming to watch his son do a podcast on the stage at Silverstone
so you could no wonder he was so bloody tense in the garage as his sons
fighting for his first podium that was lovely so close so close and what is
Ollie doing better than he was then where are these improvements coming from
I think what I was hearing that in the middle of the season or towards the
start of the season was this pace there like we'd seen the pace when he
filled in last year and then he's sort of in some places at the start
towards the start of the season struggle to piece it together and I was hearing
people say there's no doubt the pace is there but he needs to string that
together more consistently and he was making some silly mistakes I can't
remember exactly when it was but he made contact with the wall over the
Silverstone weekend on the way into the pits and that was just one
example of people being like the consistency's not quite there, there's too
many mistakes that seems a long way away a long time ago his little run of
points with ninth in Singapore ninth in the USA and then this is it's not just
getting the points on the board but all weekend he looks faster and I think
sounds quite brutal but like Esteban Ocon's been around a while he's a
benchmark of a very good formula one driver I said at the start of the
season what excellent signing he was for Haas but Esteban hasn't been picked up
by a Mercedes despite the opportunities to be there and all he is aiming for
he's part of the Ferrari junior driver program he will be aiming to get
himself into a seat like a Ferrari and to do that he next season will need to
go out and beat Esteban Ocon if he does that the big boys at the top
will start to take notice of him and he seems to be doing that so that speed
that consistency is improving the mistakes have been cut out and he's beating
Ocon at the moment if that carries on at the end of this season and
consistently into next season Oli is contracted to Haas next year for
2027 you are going to start hearing him being linked with other mood with
other teams if this carries on and if you were to be Esteban
into next year very very impressive from Esteban from Oli Berman and one
of those weekends where you just wonder you just wonder in future if he I don't
know is announces Lewis Hamilton's replacement long term where you're
going to sit back and go remember that Mexico weekend where he put it
all together just could be one of those significant weekends I'm really
impressed by Oli Berman not just this race but in this last handful of
races post summer break good time for him recently and you can also enjoy
listening to the new Taylor Swift album because we know he's a big fan of her
as well maybe that's maybe that's keeping him calm maybe that's his pre
race playlist he enjoys the fate of Ophelia but what's his fate in F1
long term only time will tell no that was awful awful speaking of
awful should we get onto Betty's radio radar because George Russell's
language during this race was absolutely awful although I loved it because I
absolutely love it and right so firstly let's start with George begging to be
let past Kimmy and this was gold George Russell make a change noted is not
good enough
ahhh good good good good where did you get this from for people listening do you want
to explain what I've got what's it called though I actually don't know what
these masks are called so you're wet so basically George Russell went and
watched some racing with a mask on in disguise but I can't remember the name
of the mask it's got a natural name hasn't it well I decided I want one
of these masks because I'm quite I was jealous and I thought it was quite look
for George I thought it was quite cool I just put into Amazon Mexican mask
oh Mexican Halloween mask and it arrived the following day they have a
proper name they do but can't remember what it is anyway brilliant George
Russell in disguise watching the formula one I think for the rest of the
season every time we talk about George I wear this well you could do yeah
absolutely it's a pretty one got another one got another one it was a two pack I'm
not fully sure why he needs to work more weekends oh oh I prefer that one
I prefer that one there yeah yeah that's lovely anyway I'll do this like this
well we're talking about George well you can't really hear you properly
yes you can well if you're listening to this get on YouTube and have a look at
the state of Christian right now I look fit yeah I look stunning and anyway so
George Russell goes f*** it make a change noted is not good enough and then he
goes I've got more pace here hinti mortars what it's quite hot I'm gonna
take it off yeah take it off and then the engineer was just saying okay you're
free to overtake and then lap 41 this was brilliant I've got a beep McLaren up my
want me to let him pass engineer no thank you Russell I was just checking
finally spot positions on lap 41 and Christian it was it was brilliant it
was gold it was it was a lot of fun and and yes it was a lot of fun it because
George was getting very irate and let's be honest we always enjoy people getting
irate on the radio for radio radar and at first when when George's race
engineer was like well he can pass it I was like yeah fair enough but then I
sort of thought to myself no you're being daft here Mercedes you've messed
this one up because it's really difficult to overtake in Mexico alright
so you want your drivers to like Kimmy Antonelli can't pass a hash fact and for
all he's doing a great job and all gas support upgrades the Mercedes should be
passing the hash Kimmy clearly isn't getting anywhere near the hash George is
going I'm loads quicker so it's like alright guys you're sticking and
going well you can overtake what you want those drivers to do a
potentially risky move on a track where it's really difficult to overtake
losing them not only time to bear men in front but piastry behind George
is right guys this makes absolutely no sense and actually with toto is not
there for the weekend guys someone needs to take control of this because
basically you've got George Russell being team principal from inside the car so
alright toto you can have a weekend off but I want someone needs to take
control because it seems like George was so I think Mercedes messed that up
spectacularly and actually you know Karun made the point on the sky
commentary that's when they eventually to go all right George we've changed
our mind we've wasted five laps of tired yeah yeah and then he probably wouldn't
have been overtaken maybe no he might have but I can totally agree I can
totally see why George was so frustrated there because because I'm
sorry yeah now we should also point out we only get select radio
messages on the feed obviously it all goes to F1 HQ at big inhale and
somebody's there deciding what to show is I hope somebody was saying to Kimmy
Kimmy you've got to get the hurry up now so we're going to let George past
feels if we should have maybe heard that if that was the case if not Mercedes
should have done that but they should have done that they've wasted an
opportunity there Mercedes and there's me turning around and saying I think
Mercedes will be in a position next year to fight for championships well
fortunately this doesn't really matter because they're not but that's the
sort of thing where next year guys you need to get that sort of thing
sorted if you're going to be in championship contention next year
because I sympathize with George there he was it was that wasn't great well I
think if Toto was there maybe maybe that wouldn't have happened but I don't know
because because Toto will be watching and he'll be in the text message away I just
think somebody needed to make that decision of no I've said Kimmy you've
got two laps to close in on Batman no you're not doing it right to what
we're going to do we're going to give George a go I just don't see why
they stubbornly stuck in it just doesn't make any sense to me but it
did give us great radio content yeah it was you know what George Russell best
radio radar it was filthy I loved it and brilliant another one that stood out
actually do you want to read this red bull one yeah so I was very confused by I think
what it does show you is that GP Jepera Lambiasi who is Max Verstappen's
best engineer always even when Max is always sounds so calm but we had this
moment where it's like GP doesn't sound calm yeah and it was like why and he's
asking Max I was a brave man I wouldn't be asking yeah this is bro and then
you realize what's happening and he got and I'm looking after a spoken to
Bernie Collins a lot of my career and she's explained how all this works I'm
sat thinking to myself he's pressed the wrong button here and the show
of Bernie Collins comes on Sky Sports and goes yeah he's pressed the wrong
button here so you have thought he had and it just shows you know that it's very
funny that he's pressed the wrong button and therefore he's talking to Max and
he thinks he's talking to the team but it shows you the talent of these race
engineers that even they pulled off a brilliant strategy but at one point it
was clearly a bit chaotic and all of this chaos is going on with all of
these different team members and then it's the race engineer that has to
be calm and calm faces like a sort of aircraft pilot okay Max we're going to be
doing a one-stop it's a one-stop or a two-stop you know went all around the
losing the heads they have to be cool and go and it's literally like guys what we do
what we do guys guys okay Max one-stop strategy please thank you
one-stop so yeah very funny mistakes happen and it's what Greg always
says we love it when rubbish mistakes happen like pressing the wrong button
but human it happens it is Max replying saying I can hit everything guys I can
hit everything yeah Max do what was happening Max is very cool it's like
yep no I can hear all this yeah I don't need to hear this
driving that's probably the last thing that you particularly want to hear like guys
get on with it come on make a decision what we're doing and other things that
really stood out for us by the way though that we've spotted on social
media one of which is Isaac haja joining in with the dancers before the drivers
parade I didn't see this go and look at it on social media hit they're dancing
and he just joins in he's got a little water bottle in his hand he's just
having a little having a little jig
oh protect that protect that boy or cast that's wonderful I did
entirely miss that I just I just love that he's just so chilled and he's
just like watching these dances he's lovely a little girl that but we've
also had a lot of messages that have come in quite a concerning incident really
concerning marshals and Liam Lawson this was just before he retired marshals
running out in front of his car yeah um it's really so for those that
haven't seen this on social media it looks like when Liam just before he
retired it looks like some marshals were running to get debris and
basically miscalculated it and ran out to the track I could have been
horrific so yes loads of people said have you seen this what's gone on
we don't know what's gone on yet the FIA this the FIA safety work generally
speaking is absolutely magnificent you know people like me come on these
podcasts and go oh the FIA have made this decision I disagree with that
I agree with that
stupid virtual safety car
it's a virtual safety car you can't criticize the FIA and formal
awong's commitment to safety they they learn lessons when it happens so yeah
it looked like what I suspect was that the marshals in the heat of the
moment have made the wrong decision and just run out if they were
given instructions to do that that will be wrong all that I can assure
people and reassure people is that F1 as a sport takes things like this
extremely seriously this will be top priority for somebody after the race
and tomorrow morning they will be looking at this going okay what happened
how do we make sure that didn't happen again it's very concerning it's
something the sport will take really seriously and we'll want to look at
yes it's not a good video and I could have ended really really badly
before we wrap things up another thing that I just want to highlight
es why was Lando getting booed so much in Mexico
because it was constant at the start and the end of the race
I don't I don't know I really really don't know
it's not needed though is it come on guys it's just weird
no it's it's not needed it is weird I hate booing
en formula 1 I I hated it when it was Max versus Luis
is something that historically growing up we didn't see too much of
informa 1 Michael Schumacher got a bit of it back in the day
I find it really hard when drivers get booed these guys are risking
their lives as we've just talked about with the Liam Lawson incident
because by the way that sort of thing isn't just dangerous for the
marshals it's dangerous for the drivers these guys are risking
their lives and that's it we shouldn't take that for granted
because you know the safety record is by large very good in the sport
nowadays and if you're going to a formula 1 race and booing a driver
no matter who that driver is grow up and actually go and watch
something else you know go and boo a football match or something
because that's not what we do informa 1 I don't like it
it's not right these guys are superhuman superheros risking
their lives I hate it and it and it we as a sport should be
better than that so if you're going to go to a race and boo a
driver stay at home go and do a different sport we don't want
you it's just not very nice to listen to for any driver and
like you say happen to Max and that that wasn't nice to listen
to either it's not even just a land o thing but it is weird
like why why are you booing him I can't give you any
insight as to why Landos getting booing in particular but
it did seem to happen over the course of this weekend it
really did I I don't know I don't know I'm sure other
people in the comments will tell me why give their opinion
on why it's happening but I don't like it I don't like it at
all well it didn't stop him winning the Mexico Grand Prix
because he got the win listen let's end on after a couple
of seasons let's end on a positive note and by the way I'm
just seeing pictures as we're finishing recording this
because we're talking about this straight after the race
of Ollie getting emotional in the pen talking about his
family getting emotional that's what we want lovely
human stories Ollie who's just the nicest guy I'm looking
at respect I've spoken to Ollie quite a lot I interviewed him
last weekend at Austin such a nice guy such a nice
environment and atmosphere around Hass at the moment
that's a lovely lovely thing good human stories and we
should be celebrating that we have got a bloody epic
title fight we should be enjoying this we should be
accentuating the positives we've got Lando Norris in the
form of his life we've got Oscar at the end of the
race reminding us that he isn't going to be out of
this year and he's achieved sensational things for as
you said Betty's 30s in Formula One we've got a
generational talent in Max Verstappen snapping at the
heels we've had a race full of drama excitement
strategy it's been a reminder of why we love this sport
so a good weekend for Formula One all in all and
just a great battle I'm I'm delighted to watch play
out in front of us I'm excited four more left and
I'm at two of them no it's so exciting so as a
reminder as to why we love the sport and this is a
