We're talking about the Ferrari Luche launch which you went to.
Where was it?
It was in Rome?
Yeah, it was in Rome?

And when when in Rome? So this is I've been
to a lot of car launches and reveals and stuff.
This is probably the most expensive one of scene. And
people might think, oh, it's just because it's Ferrari, it's or what's expensive. I've been to plenty of Ferrari launchers
and they're fine, but they're not sort of anything, sort of out of this world. This thing was on another
level entirely, both just in terms of the effort they put into the event. Just everything about it was on
an epic scale. So you could see this was important
to them. They taped up our phones, they had security
people like every fifteen minutes, checking that you still had the tape on your phone and all that sort of stuff, and.
They did this premiere.
Premiere started at like nine or nine thirty pm and by this point I'm like, I'm ready to go to sleep.
I don't need to sit through this for another hour.
They rolled through the premiere, and during the premiere I could see they were trying very hard. There was like
this sort of bad acting between execs. They rolled out
every exec they could find.
To the point where I was like, okay, so they're putting.
A bit into this.
Then the car rolled out and I thought, I think these guys serious. I wasn't sure, if you know, when
they did this hibertruck reveal and I was like, Oh, he's going to walk off stage and then the real thing will come up.
This felt like that. And this is the thing.
If you stuck a Honda or a BYD badge on it, you'd go, oh, cool, it's a sixty thousand dollars city car. Yeah,
this has a Ferrari badge on it. It'll be over
a million dollars. And it looks it just looks not
very nice and look styling is entirely subjective, which is why I don't really care what it looks like like some people might like it or not like it. This
doesn't really bother me too much. I'm there to talk
about the engineering and the car itself. But yeah, it
is challenging from a styling point of view. I just
don't know any angles that actually work for it.
It is divided on opinion. What was the vibe in
the room.
People were shocked And this is the thing.
Can you imagine?
Yeah?
Can you? I can't imagine being like one of those
execs like Tuda.
And the hard thing was we were there the night before the global reveal, So when we were there, the reveal was just for the media and all these people they flew in that customers the day after and for the media. You probably don't care too much what the
media thinks. They're not buying your car. But everything I've
seen from customers is divided as well. So if you've
got customers that aren't interested in it, they claim that they're targeting a different market, which is fair enough. Maybe
that's the angle they're going to go for, But even a different market, luxury evs just no one's buying them Ferrari's existing plug in hybrids have horrendous resale value, so a fully electric Ferrari is not going to do much better.
But from a technical standpoint, though we had a lot of time to get talking to all the engineers involved in the project. From a technical standpoint, it's actually a
pretty cool setup. They have gone above and beyond here
in terms of the engineering.
Aspect, and it's funny.
With a standard electric car, you always want to try and get as much life out of the battery range and longevity, whereas these guys want to do the opposite.
They know that most Ferrari owners have their cars sitting around, not driven daily, so they need to actually make the battery survive a long time without being driven, which.
Is quite hard to do.
If you leave a battery empty or full, they're both not good for the battery longer term. So they've got
like a special mode there to keep the battery at an optimum sort of percentage for you to just leave it sitting there.
Stuff like the suspension.
It doesn't use standard hydraulic dampers or anything that I've seen in other cars before. They actually use like a
bolt screw that goes up and down rapidly to adjust the sort of heighten the firmness of the suspension, which is crazy. The battery cell is entirely interchangeable, So what
they're saying is that in the future, when battery densities improved, they can actually swap out the battery so that you don't have to have a battery that's ten or fifteen years old. You can actually swap it out with a
new one.
Now, did I hear that they're going to be free of charge?
No, So they are all sort of They have a program so when you buy a new Ferrari, you get seven years of free servicing, like it's included in the purchase price. You then have the option of extending beyond
that seven years for extra warranty, which a lot of owners will do. They also have a hybrid program, so
any car with a battery and it once you extend that warranty for a certain period, you can actually just have the battery replaced as part of that package, so it is free in a sense.
The interior, like you can.
Clearly tell that Love from which is the company that's that's run by Johnny Ive.
And these are the guys who make the iPhone, right or you design the.
iPhone ye and Mark newsoon he's the Australian bloke that does a whole bunch of stuff, including for Quantus and whatever.
These guys were designing the Apple Car and that project died, and it is immediately obvious that this is just the Apple Car. Basically Ferrari had no involvement in the designs.
Is the first car they've entirely outsourced to a different company.
So you can see with the interior it's basically an Apple Watch. Is the same cool parts to that interior. Actually,
the interior I love. I think the interior is fantastic.
The way that they've got the screen, the screen's.
Functionality, you can kind of maneuver it. I think that's
very cool.
It's all excellent.
So from that point of view, if you look at the car in isolation, it is actually quite impressive from an engineering standpoint, what they've managed to achieve the problem is, though, is it a Ferrari And you can see just social media blew up, even Ferrari's own Instagram page, where you wouldn't expect there to be fallout, was insane. I've never
seen anything like it like it is.
Yeah, yeah, it's funny when Ferrari releases something on Instagram, I go straight to the comments. I just even if
it's got nothing to do with the leucha. People are like,
is this going to be like the term you've fucked up the lu Chu yeah or whatever. It's like, oh God,
that's what I kind of don't get, like that sort of mentality of Oh, if Enzo Ferrari were around today, it'd be rolling in his grave like it's been some sort of Olympic fucking sport for the past thirty years or whatever it is. He would have been rolling in
his graves since the invention of fucking power steering.
He's exactly you know what I mean, exactly, Yeah, that's that's the thing. It's not an electric car that's going
to set him over the edge. It's like, after he
passed away, Ferrari really took a turn in terms of profitability.
They are now worth a huge sum of money of eight percent less after the lu Che launch. They lost
billions of dollars in market value after that, but it is a huge company. It is about driving profits. It's
no longer about just a motive experiences behind the wheel, because if it was, you wouldn't be releasing half the stuff you're releasing.
So those days of Enzo just long gone.
Like there is still the heritage there, but it is not as if Ferrari is just doing drivers cars.
Because that they can't survive on just a driver's car.
It is now about everything.
You at SUVs, the Testosa is hybridized, like all of this stuff is not traditional.
I mean, this kind of reminds me of when Porsche released the Cayenne back in two thousand and one or whatever it was. People were up in arms, but it
saved the company.
And look at it now.
Everyone everyone that owns a Porsche sports car probably has a Cayenne or a mcconnald.
Not the electric yeah, yeah, definitely not the electric one. Yeah.
I think Ferrari have done a great job on making somebody else's car, you know what I mean? This is
really something else, and I think it's almost like they've gone from this poster boy car company to now the euro admissions laws have kind of forced them to design a car for an EV focused group, which.
I don't understand.
It's surely you would carve out something for Ferrari and Lamborghini Maserati and go okay, you guys are not selling these cars in enormous volumes, so you're exempt from this.
Why do you have to hybridize a fee twelve Ferrari like, it just makes no sense to me at all. So
I just think that stuff is entirely stupid, and they really should be exempt from it because it wouldn't cause them to have to do stuff like this.
I wonder what's going to happen with this, and I wonder why they don't consult. Surely there's got to be
people where they go, what do you think before we launch it? Because it's generally I haven't seen a launch
this bad since perhaps the Jaguar rebrand.
And the Jaguar rebrand the car itself, you know, whatever it is. You could take or leave the design. And
the issue with the Jaguar rebrand is how woke they went with all the random shit they did with advertising it.
These guys didn't even do that and people didn't like it.
So you can imagine if Ferrari took that one step further and had a man dressed as a woman or something like that advertising this thing, I think the Internet would melt down. So yeah, I think it's it's really
interesting to see how the perception has gone. No one's
driven it yet, so I mean.
I think it'd be interesting if this thing drives amazing.
Can you imagine if this thing was just an incredible experience.
Yeah, it should. I mean it's a Ferrari, so it
will drive well.
And some people that argue against that, well, yeah, I mean we're talking to the chief test driver who's done Ferraris now for decades, and as a guy that knows how to drive and knows how to engineer a car, I don't think he's going to be going and putting his name on something that's that's a tur to drive.
So maybe they will change the way that the driving experience is for an electric car, which which could be a good or bad thing.
I don't know, but yeah, look.
I'll be curious to see. I think people will buy
them if they want to stand out. You think about like.
It's the same as the cyber truck, you know what I.
Mean exactly, Or you think about countless other designer brands that release stupid looking shit, like you've got Balenciaga shoes that are rainbow colored that people will wear because they're Balenciaga or a Burken bag that looks like it's from the sixties.

So yeah, I mean it's people will buy it because they want to be in a Ferrari. At the end
of the day, people are brand Horse. It is, but
people are brand Horse, so they will buy it from that point of view. And I don't think they are
ever expecting it to be a mass consumer car, which none of these fully electric cars are. You look at
the sales that Rolls Royce spector, I mean that, and the resale is horrific, like even worse than a normal Rolls Royce. So I think it's just electric cars in
general from these luxury brands people are just not interested in.
I don't even think there's that much of a big deal.
There was an argument that this should probably be a separate division of Ferrari, which I found an interesting argument.
I think. I mean, yeah, they've got to evolve. I
guess I can't sort of if they're going to evolve, this is probably the avenue to do it is on an ev because they've got a specific clientele.

You spent a little bit of time in Beijing. You
tested a lot of Chinesey Chinese cars, Look at them.
Just give me the subtitle of what the Beijing Motor Show is for the for the automotive industry. What would
you describe it as? Fucking huge?
It is the world's biggest motor show. This never used
to be the case ten fifteen years ago. It was
always the European shows.
They're dead now.
So I went to Shanghai last year because they alternate, so Shanghai then Beijing alternate each year. Shanghai I thought
was enormous. Beijing I was not expecting to be this big.
So just to put it into context, they've built a new exhibition center and it's attached to the old exhibition center.
The old exhibition center is probably similar in size to the Melbourne or Sydney exhibition centers. The new one is
six times the size of that. So from one end
of the motor show to the other is about one and a half kilometers just walking Jesus, So that's one way.
You then do one and a half kilometers. You do
one and a half k's the opposite way as well, So you've got three k's worth of strolling to get through all these halls, and every single hall is full.
It's not like the dying days of the European motor shows where you had these big halls, but there were gaps the size of a football field between brands. They
are all tightly packed.
As in the Melbourne Motor Show.
Yeah it didn't go to it, but it sounded a bit shit. So but yeah, this is the thing.
It's it is enormous from a scale point of view.
We were there on the two media days, and even the media days are out of this world. I had
a colleague who went back on a public day and she said it was like even like ten times more than so it is insane. Now, these brands are interesting
because a lot of the brands are sub brands of sub brands. So you'll have the Sake Group, which will
have a sub brand of MG. MG will have a
sub brand of whatever, which will then have a sub brand of whatever I am or something like that. Yeah,
so you've got all of these brands you've never heard of, and when you trace the family tree, they all go back to maybe the ten parent brands of some sort.
So it is just so fascinating to see how many of these are popping up. There is no shortage of variety.
You've got everything from cheap and cheerful shitters through to these high end luxury cars that are many hundreds of thousands of dollars. And you can see that the Chinese
are fully into it, because again, ten or fifteen years ago, the Chinese didn't buy Chinese cars. You'd be a sucker
if you bought one. These days, they're not buying anything European.
And it's so interesting to see Audi. Audi was actually
one of the first foreign brands to enter China, and it's perceived by the Chinese as being, you know, the European car brand.
Yeah, and they took the logo off.
Yeah, but it's like the European car brand, but it comes with an old person image. So they realized this
and they said, okay, we're going to have North Audi and South Audi. Really one of those is going to
have the rings, the other will just have Audi written.
So they're just it's hilarious how Audi which ones we're German.
Audi has no choice in it. They're just like, well,
you know, prior to a few years ago, every car company that wanted to sell a car in China had to have a JV with a joint venture with a local Chinese car company that would own majority percentage. And
what you found is that as these majority percentage owned Chinese companies learnt more and more, they would then launch their own spin off sub brands. So this is how
some of these car companies that were joint ventures are now launching their own cars.
It's like the Bronco.
For example, Broncho New Energy is produced by a Chinese company, but they get to leverage the Bronco name even though it's not anything to do with the Bronco that comes from the States.
So is that that Bronco that we're getting. Yeah, is
that one of them? Yeah?
It is, and it is really cool.
So we're getting this by the end of this year, and it is going to be really sharply priced plug in hybrid forward product, but heaps a room inside you are Broncos, so it kind of has that styling to it.
Even the Ranger that they sell in China has a ZF transmission, which we don't have available here. It's got
all these features that we don't have access to, even though it is the same car.
Yeah.
So yeah, Look, Beijing motors show unreal and I think a lot of people think in the back of their minds that China is like a third world country. If
you haven't been to China in the past ten to fifteen years, you will just be blown away at how advanced it is. Like it is, it is on another level.
So I challenge I challenge that thinking and the other hilarious thing I find every time we publish anything on a Chinese car company, we're told how we're sponsored by the CCP. It's like, mate, Australians are sick of getting
ripped off. Like you look at a rap four for example,
or a land Cruiser. These things are outrageously overpriced. So
when you get the Chinese come in and actually provide value for money, everyone's up in arms and it's like, well, look, if you want to still pay for the brand, go for it. But a lot of people are struggling at
the moment. They want a new car without having to
spend an arm and a leg, and that is the Chinese car.

I went to China about eight years ago, and I was just blown away just by the atmosphere of the whole place. Like it's so interesting when you kind of
go to places like that in the world and you're like, Oh, we're really fucking lacking in a lot of ways, a lot of ways. Like they're so progressive. What's interesting about
China is they're so progressive, yet they do on a kind of tradition as well.
Yeah, and it's kind of like Japan in that sense.
Japan carries on that culture and tradition, but with the Chinese, I find it really fascinating. I posted a thing on
Instagram about traveled by high speed trains. I went to
visit a factory where we're buying some stuff for this other business I've got, And I went to this trade fair as well, and I used it.
I was going to ask you about that trade fair I had made too. Went to that, Yeah, and that
is incredible. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I want another level.
But yeah, I used high speed trains to get between places, and like, I'm sitting in a train and in this little business class suite doing three hundred and fifty ks an hour, and here in Australia.
You can't even get a fucking train to the airport, it exactly.
And you want to catch a v line from Melbourne to Geelong and you're on this old diesel shipbox that will do one hundred and ten k's an hour. It's like,
what is what planet are we on here? And even
the Chinese work ethic. If you run a business in Australia,

I think China for many years has thrived on the fact that they've been almost like the underdog if you look at Chinese history. I mean, now they're just fuck
they're showing the world, they're leading the way in EV's like no one wants to. I do think they've got
a little bit to go with their almost their interpretation of Western culture, especially when they're designing designing a car, like when they do borrow things, design aspects and parts of other cars. They do it in a cheap way,
but they try to make it look luxurious, and it's like, just make it fucking properly luxurious.

While we were over there, we did a factory tour with Cherry.
We published that video the other day.
It's already got like two hundred and fifty thousand views, and that was kind of an eye opener for me as well. I've done factory tours in heaps of places
Australia when we were manufacturing throughout Europe, throughout Eastern Europe, the US, India, Japan, so I've been to a lot of factories around the world. We did this tour, We
saw a crash test, toured everything from the design studio through to cool Yeah, the crash test was interesting.
That's cool. But it is no different to any other
factory I've been to.
Like it's not world class, Like it's not like they're doing something that I haven't seen before, but it's no worse than anything I've ever seen. So even the manufacturing stuff,
it's not to a low quality. It is just to
the same standard you see everywhere else, so I think people were surprised by that.
In the video.
Yeah, the crash test was interesting.
So they did a head on crash test with a Ti Go nine and a tick Go seven I think.
But then what they did was, as the head on crash test happened, they had a sled, which represents another car, which is I think a fourteen hundred kilo vehicle, crash into the back of one of the cars. So basically,
as the head on crash happened, this sled smashed into the back of one of the other cars. So you
had a car that was double handled effectively by a car at the front and then the sled. And yes,
so what they do this four is to understand whether you can still open doors and wheather air bags go off, what happens.
With the door handles, all that sort of stuff.
So it was just really fascinating to see. And it's
this crash facility is enormous. They've got like a three
hundred meter runway where the crash happens, so the cars are pulled along on a on like a metal guide.
But this place is very different to others I've been to because you have another five set of angles they can do crash tests from. So you've got not only
your your sort of one hundred and eighty degree one, but then they spark off in like forty five degree thirty degree angles, so you can actually do crash tests where one car is going straight and then another car has come in from from the side and.
Different different crumple zone of stuff. A guy who gets
to push the button that was worked today, honey, that would be a fucking cool job. Fus another car up, Yeah,
just get to push the button and watch cuz crush.
It's really fun. But say that with the Chinese act,
which you're not alone, Yeah, which I can't do anymore.
Anyway.
I just urge people, while a Chinese car may not be for you, I just think, go test trifon because I think a lot of people that comment have just never sat in one and never driven one.
Everyone's saying, well, new shit, Ah, look what have you got to compare it to, mate? What are you going
to compare it to?

But I think if you understand what people are buying them for to get from A to B and to get a new car instead of a used one, they kind of do the job.
I'll tell you what is quite impressive is that bloody BYD boat, that boat that came out here the other day.
The giant, the giant boat. And you go a car
manufacturer that literally has a gigantic fucking boat and is just delivering ten thousand BYD cars because of you know, obviously we they've shot up in sales. It's like, wow,
that's that's incredible.
Well, let's let's put some of it into context, because our guys did a sales piece the other day with Vfax, which is the industry sales numbers effectively that come out each month, and it was so fascinating to see the situation.
Toyota's in at the moment.
So Toyota, despite being one of Austraightia's most popular manufacturers, their sales have dropped thirty percent year on year. So
it's so since the beginning of twenty twenty six, their new vehicle deliveries have dropped by almost twenty five percent.
Now they're claiming its access to stock, which I don't believe because.
Well they've always that I reckon. They took a long
time to recover after the COVID fuck up, especially with them with producing cars. I mean, you remember how how
long we all waited for a Toyota was.
Incredible that that should be well and truly fixed.

You've got much bigger problems. But Prado sales are down
forty five percent, So I don't know. I just think
that I reckon they're actually feeling a lot of what's going on with the influx of Chinese cars, and they kind of followed up.

said we have ten thousand cars coming next month.
It's like, okay, guys, you're.

market now, Like Kienda launched that Alexio recently that has this enormous screen with no interruptions, so it's like this big screen. Now, Mercedes has gone for a screen from
left to right, except it's literally just three screens and you can see all this black space around them. It
just looks so two thousand and six. And I don't know,
it just looks cheap and I know it won't be They've completely lost their way.

in terms of cooling, energy delivery, all that sort of stuff.

got that the backside to it. How they raise the
