Welcome back to EV News Daily, and welcome to a special bonus edition of the podcast.
I say special.
I mean, it's only special if you're interested in this podcast.
Otherwise, hit stop now, go to the next episode, and catch up on the latest EV News.
Yeah, it's a podcast about a podcast.
How meta.
So, let me update you on a couple of things that I've been working on over the summer.
And the first one is we are officially bringing back EV News China.
Weekdays.
I'll explain why we're doing it, what makes the Chinese EV industry so important right now,
and how that fits into the bigger picture of the community that we have here.
And secondly, we're introducing something I've never done before,
but after some community feedback and asking you to vote on this,
we are going to make any specials that we do on the podcast,
seven days exclusive to the Patreon platform that nobody else gets access to,
apart from the paid subscribers on Patreon.
It's like a behind the scenes pass to the EV world, deep dives, interviews,
analysis that we do on the podcast will go into the free feed eventually,
but will be Patreon exclusive for a period of time,
and I'll explain why the community chose that time period.
So, firstly, EV News China and why it matters.
You've heard me say this many times before.
If you want to understand EVs, you have to understand China.
The scale of what's happening there is unlike anywhere else in the world.
China is not just the largest auto market.
Globally, it's the fastest adopting EV market.
Last year alone, more than 8 million cars were sold in China.
That's over half of all EVs sold worldwide.
To put that into context, in Europe and the US combined,
the numbers are impressive, but they don't come close.
So why does it matter? Because scale drives everything.
Scale drives down battery costs.
Scale creates new supply chains.
It gives manufacturers breathing room to innovate, iterate, experiment.
What takes years to test and validate in Europe and the US
is taking months in China, for good and bad, by the way,
and we'll dig into that on this series,
because the market is so big, consumer adoption is so quick.
So when we talk about EV trends, globally,
whether it's batteries, chemistry, software, charging infrastructure,
the truth is many of those trends are happening in China right now,
and many of them are being scaled in China
before the rest of us get it.
So the rise of Chinese EV brands can't be ignored.
Another reason that I'm going to bring back EV news China
is that Chinese brands are no longer just the local players.
They are global challenges.
For instance, BYD will export a million vehicles this year,
non-domestic overseas vehicles.
BYD has already overtaken Tesla in some quarterly sales numbers.
They're expanding aggressively.
Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, Latin America.
And BYD doesn't just build the cars.
BYD builds just about everything,
including the ships to get them out of China.
Look at Neo, relatively niche compared to BYD.
They've carved out a unique identity with battery swapping.
X-Peng or Xiaopang, another one to watch,
strong in advanced driver assistance and pushing into Europe too.
Why it's really hard to follow Chinese EV news.
Look, here's the challenge.
As important as it all is,
the Chinese EV industry can be hard to follow from the outside.
And I don't think there's anyone doing this in a way
that explains it to both enthusiasts of the EV industry
and the people that listen to this podcast that work in the business.
There's other trade publications which do a great job,
but they're really aimed at the industry.
Or there is, I think, a really good level of YouTube vlogger
giving their opinion about what's happening in China.
There is kind of a gap in the market for,
well, what I've created here on EV News Daily,
which is mostly, I think nine times out of 10,
I'm just giving you the news.
And occasionally I'll dip in with my editorial thoughts.
Not always gratefully received sometimes,
but hopefully creating something,
not only for the industry to listen to,
but for the automotive enthusiasts
and for the EV regular consumer as well.
And so I think that's probably where
I can bring those skills on EV News Daily,
the daily cadence of the news
and hopefully the way that we write this podcast
being accessible but not dumbed down.
Also, there's a language barrier as well.
Like this is going to be an English language podcast.
I can't speak Chinese.
My Mandarin's not very good.
But yeah, I'll do my best to be respectful of place names
and people's names and things like that, obviously.
Coverage in Western media also lags behind.
And it will often simplify the story,
which frustrates me enormously.
They don't dig in to what's really happening.
They just say, well, the Chinese can make EVs cheaper
than everybody else.
And then they won't dig into, well, why is that?
And yeah, it's obviously because of labor
and supply chains and technology and many things as well.
And it gets simplified and boiled down
to Chinese cars cheap or Chinese cars this and that.
Well, actually it's really complex.
And it's interesting that interplay
between the Western markets
and the Chinese markets as well.
Now, a couple of months ago, we started EV news China
as a test in July just to gauge the temperature
a little bit of the audience.
I was asking you, reaching out to the Patreon audience
as well, and what do you think of this?
Would you listen to it?
Is it interesting to have, just if you have the spare time?
Overwhelmingly, people said yes.
And a lot of my longtime patrons,
we launched this seven years ago, said yes and,
oh yes, but yes, and you spread really thin at the minute.
And we know it's just you working on the podcast.
You got young family and whatnot.
So I've made some changes there,
brought in the very first person to help write
EV news daily and EV news China.
So, you know, it's now two not one and that's amazing.
But the show is just funded on Patreon
and it is just funded on some of the ads
that come out on the AudioBoom feed.
So on the free feed podcast.
And that's it.
And we're not selling direct sponsorships.
I'm not doing endorsements for car companies.
We're editorially independent.
We're always looking for ways to increase revenue
because of course, it's not cheap to bring somebody in
to help me write, but is essential
if we want to build this to be bigger.
So let's take a punt on it and see where this goes.
So hopefully we'll cut through the noise
and we'll ensure that the community of EV news daily
gets the latest from China
because Chinese EV news is global EV news right now.
The IAA show is happening in Munich
and the Chinese are there in force.
The Chinese battery industry, CATL is the biggest.
The Chinese EV industry, BYD is the biggest
and whether you like it or not
when Chinese government changes policy
internal or export policy
it sends ripples through the kind of cars
that eventually you and I can buy
and have in our driveway.
So it's important.
Right.
We have a second announcement as well
and that's being Patriot exclusive
and I'll take a break and I'll come back and explain it.
Okay.
Welcome back now on to the second announcement.
Hey, by the way, you're still here.
That's amazing.
What are you doing here?
We're just talking about the podcast.
So the second announcement is alongside a full time return
of EV news China.
We're expanding what we do on Patriot
and giving just some exclusivity
and a way of saying thank you
to the incredible supporters on Patriot.
Now, I'm not a massive fan of creating content locked away forever
only for subscribers on any platform.
Not I'm not talking about myself now.
The point of EV news daily is to spread the word far and wide
on as many platforms as we can about the move to EV
and hopefully in a reasonable way
cut through all of the noise
and just tell you what you need to know every day.
So I've always been a little bit hamstrung
by that strong belief
that I don't want to just create Patriot content
like Patriot always says, you know, make exclusive content
for your audience, lock it away behind the paywall
and people will pay you for that content.
I get it.
That's probably how a lot of patrons make a lot more money
than me, but I just don't believe
that's the ethos of this podcast.
I just think everything should be open.
That's the free feed will always be free,
but it's unsupported.
So I asked you earlier this year about this idea
and we've totted up the votes.
I think we've come to a good compromise
and a good solution.
It's something I've been wanting to do for a while.
I kind of let it rest over summer
because of the school holidays and stuff like that.
The main daily podcast will always be free
and available everywhere ad supported.
Thank you for listening to the ads if you do.
But there are only so many times a day
that I come across a story and idea, a new car launch.
This has been a busy week with IAA in Munich.
New car launches that we have to lose
so much information in a 20 minute podcast
if we're going through 10, 12 or 14 stories in that time.
So I often make specials, deep dives,
industry interviews, behind the scenes,
updates of what's happening at the car companies
and sometimes they've been weekend specials.
So why use the Patreon platform
to make it exclusive for a limited period of time
and not just make it free?
Well, it's to make the podcast sustainable.
If I want to carry on bringing people in
to help me work on this and make this content for you
and videos the next big hurdle to get over,
people just say, oh, just turn the camera on.
Let it roll and just upload any old rubbish to YouTube.
We'll watch it. Yeah, I know that.
But again, I have kind of some sensibilities
around the content that I watch on YouTube.
I get you can just turn on an iPhone
and just chitchat nonsense.
And some people love that.
Like, I love it.
I watch, you know, Björn Nyland in Norway,
his live streams, which are hours and hours long
and sometimes there's just long periods of silence
or it's just nonsense chitchat.
And sometimes it's brilliant insightful EV stuff.
So, you know, a bit of a hypocrite.
I do watch that content myself
but I don't want to create stuff
that's not great.
So we want to bring people in
and make the YouTube content great in time.
To do that, we have to be sustainable on Patreon
and we need to grow that platform.
So how do we do that?
Well, offering exclusivity for a period of time.
And so I asked you earlier this year,
we put a vote up.
If I've made those specials that I've been making anyway,
but lock them into Patreon for a period of time,
what is reasonable?
And I offered one day, one week or one month
and overwhelmingly people voted for seven days
because a month seems like,
well, a new car launch is kind of old news
and the day wouldn't be very exclusive
because I can wait a day because I'm busy.
So seven days seems reasonable.
It's a good benefit for the patrons.
And if you really don't mind just listening to the free feed,
they will show up there anyway.
So when we make a special like this week,
we're working on specials for the new BMW iX3
and all the new cars coming out of the show
at the minute in Munich.
Those will go on to Patreon
and I'll let you know when they go live on Patreon
and then I'll just set them to go live on the free feed.
Seven days later,
I hope that's a way of keeping the free feed independent,
focused, bringing people in to help me do this,
no clickbait headlines
and just desperately trying to get more adverts in
by using Patreon to generate that money there.
So hopefully you agree.
Those are two reasonable improvements to the podcast.
Thank you for sticking with me and not just today,
but over the years as well, a huge, huge thank you.
We actually couldn't do it without you.
Supporting on Patreon doesn't just unlock
all the extra content a week early.
It also keeps EV news daily independent,
free from corporate agendas,
focus purely on what matters to you
and offering you a digest, a TLDR of the EV world
so that you are completely up to speed
because I know that you are busy.
So if you've never thought about supporting the show,
it's a great time to jump in and have a look
for the price of a posh coffee or two each month.
You get those exclusive shows now
a week earlier than the free feed
and if you're happy on the free feed,
that's amazing as well
because you know that well in seven days time,
we're gonna get something dropping in
that now maybe other people have listened to first,
but you don't mind that.
So either way, I hope people win.
Oh, and by the way,
we'll never lock anything down
that's super, super urgent.
So if there's any massive change
that you need to know about today,
it will go into the daily news feed.
So these will be things like car launches
or interviews or any specials that we make.
Hopefully it's a cherry on top for the Patreon supporters,
but not too offensive to the kind of the free listeners
to feel like it's a bit of a second-class service.
But let me know if I've got that right on the money,
not if we need to adjust it,
then we can make tweaks along the way.
So thank you for supporting me
and checking out the Patreon platform if you do.
Hopefully you enjoy that.
I don't know how long we'll do EV News China for.
It's back and it's as permanent
as anything is permanent
and hopefully it'll work out
and that you enjoy listening to that
and the specials as well.
Any feedback if you want to send me an email, my address,
I'd give it out and it's full of spam
because I know I shouldn't give my email address out
so publicly, but again, it's part of the ethos of the show.
I want you to be able to talk to me anytime.
It's hello at evnewsdaily.com.
That is hello at evnewsdaily.com.
Thanks for listening.
I'll see you on the next one.
